Message from Ms Pun
As a teacher, one of my happiest experiences is forming a meaningful connection with my students. This connection enables us to communicate properly and work towards a common goal: learning. There is magic and joy in these moments of mutual understanding, which are the key to human relationships. Connecting with my students helps them feel understood, trusted and important.
As the poet and scholar John Donne once said, ‘No man is an island.’ He believed that the connections between us and our beliefs about the world help us conquer loneliness and emptiness. When we understand we are all part of a community, part of the world, and part of the vast universe, our lives have meaning.
At i-Learner, we are connected by our curiosity, empathy and passion for knowledge, others and our world. In the classroom, students and teachers have wonderful connections that allow learning and knowledge to flourish. There are attentive eyes, understanding nods, compassionate smiles, little surprises, and infectious laughter in our classes. These are the happy, magical moments taking place in our classrooms, and they are at the centre of what we believe education should be.

Five Child ren and It
Chapter 3: As Rich as Kings
The sand fairy huffed and puffed. His eyes stretched out like a snail’s.
‘Done,’ he said.
The children were amazed. They were beautiful! They ran home to show their parents.
‘Who are you?’ asked their mum.
‘Go away!’ said their dad.
The children cried and ran away. They hid until sunset.
The next day, they went back to the gravel pit.
‘Our wish was terrible,’ said Anthea.
‘Can we have another one?’ asked Robert.
The sand fairy stroked its whiskers and said, ‘One.’
‘Make us rich,’ said Cyril.
The sand fairy huffed and puffed. Then every piece of gravel turned into gold.

Connecting with Nature

Babani English Teacher
Being outdoors and breathing fresh air can relieve stress and help us cope with physical and mental health stresses. Hong Kong is surrounded by the ocean and mountains, giving us access to the healing power of nature. We can run around in open spaces, swing on monkey bars, explore natural environments, and have adventures. We can test our fitness and relish our energy.
Over the past two years, however, we have been through many restrictions due to the pandemic. Outdoor activities and gatherings were banned or limited for months, which led many to adopt a less active lifestyle. Now, with the situation improving, it is time to catch up on what we missed.
An active outdoor lifestyle has been shown to restore our focus and reduce stress. Our ability to concentrate and manage emotions improves after spending time in nature because the beautiful scenery holds our attention. Be it the sound of running water or the sight of expansive greenery, nature’s sensory impacts are effective at reducing stress in a way that is essential nowadays.
Try connecting with nature through the sensory activities on the next page.
Why is connecting with nature good for us?
Vineeta
“ ” Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. 4
Use your senses in nature
Pick a nice spot in a park, country park or beach and:
Look for soothing natural colours and textures, such as the wavy, blue sea or rough, brown tree trunks.
Walk around and touch textured objects, such as grainy sand or smooth leaves.
Listen to the sounds coming from your own body, such as your calm breathing as well as the sounds of nature: birds singing, waves crashing and leaves rustling.
Take a deep breath and discover smells, such as the salt in the wind, the scent of flowers or the freshness of wet grass.
Find something you can taste, or enjoy fruits and vegetables you’ve brought from home.
Nature scavenger hunt sketches
Start your hunt with classic items such as a leaf, an insect, a seed, a rock or a flower.
Choose one to two types of items and look for them in different colours, sizes, shapes or textures. For example, find as many different leaves as you can. Even leaves from the same tree are not the same!
Pick one or two items from your collection and use your senses as much as you can — look, touch, smell, listen to them or even taste them (if safe). If you have chosen a living creature, make sure you do not hurt them or yourself while doing this.
Close your eyes and think how these items make you feel and what they remind you of. For example, seeds might remind you of summer, during which you enjoy watermelon and spit out its seeds.
Draw the items in detail, not as they look in real life, but as they make you feel. Use colours that reflect your emotions, and feel free to add or omit any detail. Make it magical! Your seeds can grow wings and be as colourful as the rainbow!

Why You Should Read Across the Curriculum
Reading across the curriculum means reading books connected to different school subjects (e.g. history, science and geography). It helps you understand more about the world around you and gain insight into how things work. Everything in the world is interconnected, and therefore to fully understand one topic, you should learn about the topics it’s linked with.
Hannah Patient English Teacher
Gigi Cheng English Teacher
Let’s take the human body as an example. First, we need scientific knowledge to understand how the body works. Then, geography lets us recognise the extreme environmental conditions a human cannot survive in. In addition, historical information teaches us the errors that were made when treating injuries and curing illnesses in the past. Lastly, to pass on this knowledge to the next generation, language and art are important for developing texts that explain theories and illustrate details of the human body.
It’s also important to read across the curriculum because this encourages you to be an all-rounder instead of specialising too early. The modern world is changing so quickly that you might end up doing a job that doesn’t even exist right now. For example, twenty years ago, no one knew it was possible to be an app developer, social media manager or YouTube content creator. Jobs which currently require highly specialist knowledge may one day be replaced by computers. That’s why it’s important to be able to think creatively and tie together knowledge from a range of different subjects - a computer will never be able to do this!
So, what books should you read to broaden your knowledge? Here are some ideas:
A funny and information-packed series about all the juicy bits of history you don’t study in school.
The Horrible Histories series

Making Connections Making Connections
Why do we learn English? One of the reasons is so we can communicate and make connections with people from around the world. One of the best ways to make connections with other people is to play games with them.
Luckily, there are many well-known games that can help us practise our English, develop our communication skills and make lasting connections with other people. Well-known traditional examples are Scrabble, UNO, Pictionary and Monopoly, and more modern examples are Skribbl and Kahoot!
We do not need a lot of resources to have fun and connect with people. True, having a pack of UNO or Monopoly Deal cards to hand is useful, but there are plenty of games we can play with just a pencil and paper. Hangman, Tic-Tac-Toe and guess the drawing are classics. Here are some more ideas to try with your friends:
Mega Tic-Tac-Toe
Extend the basic game with a bigger grid and new scoring system. In the example below the ‘O’ (noughts) player would get 2 points for joining two in a row in two directions (2 x 1 point).
The winner is the person with the most points at the end when the grid is full. Make sure your grid has an even number of squares in total so that each player has the same number of turns. As the first player has a slight advantage, toss a coin to see who starts.
Customise the game by: changing the grid size or points system
playing with more than two players (make sure the grid size is divisible by the number of players) using any symbol you like (e.g. a heart, diamond, star or moon)
Robert Burton English Teacher Alister Hill English Teacher
Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Etc... Number in a row 1 3 5 10 15 20 25 Point(s)
Any Way Scrabble
We can use another grid for a Scrabble-type game in which words are valid in any direction (e.g. across, down, right-to-left and diagonal). On each turn, a player can add ONE whole word, as in the example below:
s a m s i h e l l o e
Number in a row 1 3 5 10 15 20 25
Point(s)
Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Etc...
The player who added ‘smile’ would get 10 points for ‘smile’ and 3 points for ‘see’ (formed diagonally from the ‘s’ of ‘ash’) for a total of 13 points.
Customise the game by: adding squares that cannot be used starting with letters that are more difficult to use scattered around the board (e.g. X, V, Y, Z, Q)
・
adding double word squares that double the points of the word passing through it
adding mystery squares, which can be used as any letter and can change whenever a new word is formed with it.
Have fun and make connections!

Bugbug’s Library is very interesting to my kindergarten students. The books help them to learn sight words and vocabulary from Cambridge Starters, Movers and Flyers too.

Using Diagrams to Think Critically
Using Diagrams to Think Critically Using Diagrams to Think Critically
Joyce Wong English Teacher
Mind maps, charts and diagrams are a visual way of organising your ideas and thoughts. They help you connect ideas together, remember information, brainstorm ideas and solve problems. How many do you know?
Starbursting
Starbursting takes its name from the shape of the diagram - a star! It is a way of brainstorming ideas by asking important questions. Each point of the star represents a question word: who, what, where, how, when and why. By asking yourself questions using these words, you can fully develop an idea. It works well for writing news articles, making sure you’ve fully answered all the questions such as ‘When did it happen?’ and ‘How did it happen?’ It also helps you develop stories by making sure you’ve asked yourself all the right questions: Who are the main characters? What is the setting? When does the story take place? How will the story progress?

Mind Map
With a mind map, you can capture your ideas in a blank space and branch off from existing ideas. It tests how much you know and how far you can take your ideas, making it perfect for revision and brainstorming. Start by putting the topic in the centre and connecting words/phrases to it that are related to the topic. With each word/phrase, you can branch off further using lines. If you’re revising, you can test your memory by writing longer notes and using these for revision.

Venn Diagram
Overlapping circles make a Venn diagram. Usually seen in maths, Venn diagrams allow you to group things together based on logic and help you compare and contrast two or more things. You can use two or more circles, adding a circle for each additional thing you want to compare. In the overlapping section, you write down similarities, and in the sections that don’t overlap, you write down the differences.

Flow chart
A flow chart is used for drawing out a process. Using arrows and shapes, you can draw out linear, circular and more complex processes, such as the water cycle. It is also useful for sequencing ideas and solving problems. Often you will see teachers use it in science to explain different processes.
Try using some of these diagrams the next time you are brainstorming and planning in class!
