Message from Ms Pun
A Life Full of Laughter Who doesn’t want to be friends with someone that makes us laugh? We all want to be amused and bring joy into our lives — that’s why we love comedies! As youngsters, our love of reading often develops out of an appreciation of funny comics, and even the oldest and most sensible among us appreciate irony and satire. Humour shows skill with words — we need to choose the right words at the right time to make someone laugh. Good writers can create fun moments even in serious books with techniques like puns, hyperbole and carefully chosen clichés. We can start with something like: ‘I really am very hungry... but I can’t eat that horse' or ‘It’s raining cats and dogs. Oh, where did they go?’ With practice, you can make jokes that bring fun to friends, and you can also master the language you’re writing or speaking in by twisting it to your own purpose. While doing this, you’re also developing your sense of humour, which is a key element of your personality. Laughing at oneself shows our self-confidence and self-acceptance. Very often, we make fun of ourselves in order to create humour. This not only brings a little lightness to our conversation, but it also shows confidence in ourselves. It acknowledges the fact that we as human beings are not perfect, and that we all have our little faults. This recognition and acceptance of our flaws removes some of the stress from our own lives, and brings great comfort to our audience, readers and friends. Finally, humour is a great ambassador. It eases embarrassment, it dissolves anger, and it turns hatred into smiles. We need humour in our own thoughts as well as when creating bonds with friends and when collaborating with our colleagues. Humour is like an angel that puts the whole world on our side, and the levity of jokes can allow us to face difficult truths and understand new perspectives. We can all add a little more humour to our lives and our learning!

t h n i e M k c u u t d S Chapter 4 ‘What do we do now?’ said Nick. ‘I’ll pull you out!’ said Jack. ‘And you can pull me out.’ They pulled and pulled, but they still couldn’t move. ‘Will we be here forever?’ said Nick. ‘I know!’ said Jack. ‘The mudskippers move across the mud by wiggling their bodies. Let’s do that!’ The children looked carefully at the creatures and saw how they moved. Then they wiggled too. The children wiggled and wiggled. Then, one by one, they got their feet out of the mud. Pop… Pop! ‘Hurray!’ said Nick. ‘Mudskippers are the best animals!’ said Jack. ‘Look how they helped us!’ ‘Thank you for showing us the mudskippers,’ said Meg. ‘Yes!’ said Nick. ‘They were great. How can we say thank you?’ ‘Buy me lunch,’ Jack said. ‘I’m hungry after our trip.’ ‘What would you like?’ asked Meg. ‘Well, I love eating fish,’ said Jack. ‘But not mudskippers!’ laughed Nick.

The Humourists
Edwin Choy English Teacher
Clowns and jokesters are known for using humour to entertain, but did you know that intellectuals and people in power use humour in their speeches and writing too? That’s because everybody likes a good laugh. Most thinkers agree that a vital ingredient to humour is absurdity – we smile when people pair things that don’t normally fit together. Let’s look at some examples. In his epic poem Don Juan, Lord Byron pauses his storytelling to take a jab at a fellow poet: Young Juan wander’d by the glassy brooks, Thinking unutterable things; he threw Himself at length within the leafy nooks Where the wild branch of the cork forest grew; There poets find materials for their books, And every now and then we read them through, So that their plan and prosody are eligible, Unless, like Wordsworth, they prove unintelligible. On battlefields, humour is often shown through understatement, which makes even the gravest problems sound absurdly trivial. During the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, it is said that the Earl of Uxbridge told the Duke of Wellington about how he had lost his leg. To which the Duke replied, ‘...so you have!’ Fast-forward to 1916, when the British Royal Navy was battling against the Imperial German fleet. As two of his ships blew up before his eyes, the British admiral commented that there seemed to be ‘something wrong’ with them. These examples are humorous because they violate common expectations – poets are supposed to be elegant and think beautiful things, and soldiers are meant to scream and despair about war. Yet by making fun of everything, people learn to accept the absurdity of reality and imperfections of their own lives. The importance of humour was also seen in the Renaissance period, when royal courts hired professional entertainers called jesters. They mocked the powerful and told the truth with humour. Today, court jesters are no more, yet the spirit of jest lives on – in literature, media, in you, and in me.

As a form of entertainment, jokes bring people together. When people laugh at something together, it creates a sense of belonging and acceptance. A good joke can also be part of storytelling, and can bring surprises to a story. Laughter is good for everyone! There are different types of jokes to tell. Here are some interesting ones that are sure to tickle your funny bone!

Did you know laughter relieves pain and lowers your blood pressure?
Riddles A riddle is a statement or question that uses double meanings. It is usually a puzzle that a person needs to solve. Here are some interesting riddles: What word is spelled wrong in the dictionary? Wrong! What has hands but doesn’t clap? A clock!
What’s black and white and blue? A sad zebra!
Now it’s your turn to come up with some puzzling riddles to challenge your friends and family! Make a note of your riddles here:
Tongue Twisters A tongue twister is a series of words that start with the same letter or sound very similar and are hard to say. Say it as quickly as you can and celebrate any mistakes with laughter! Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t very fuzzy, was he?
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? How did you do? Did the tongue twisters twist your tongue? Have a competition with your friends, and see who can say them the fastest.

Knock-knock Jokes A knock-knock joke is a classic type of joke. Pretending someone is knocking on the door of a house, two people have a short conversation that usually ends in a pun. Here are some examples: Knock, knock! Who’s there? Who. Who, who? I didn’t know you were an owl!
Knock, knock! Who’s there? Boo. Boo who? Don’t cry, it’s just a joke!
Could you answer the door with some great laughter? Have a go! There are many other jokes too. Read pages 14-15 for some humorous jokes i-Learner students love! You can join our joke competition on page 16 and check out these pages for more laughs with your friends and family.

Books That That Make Make Us Us Laugh Laugh Books Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Joke Book
by Roald Dahl
P1-P4
What is this book about? How is it connected to humour, jokes, irony and puns? There are over 400 hilarious jokes, limericks and riddles in this amazing joke book, and they are all based on famous characters from Roald Dahl's stories! Familiar names such as Charlie and Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and George from George’s Marvellous Medicine all make an appearance in this book. The funny jokes and puns are short and easy to remember. Why do I enjoy it? Roald Dahl and his marvellous stories accompanied my childhood. They have also been my favourite books to read, share and discuss with my students. As a fan of Roald Dahl's stories and characters, I enjoy reading and figuring out all the humorous jokes and riddles about them.
Ms Esme loves reading both fiction and nonfiction books. She especially enjoys feeling connected to authors through understanding their sense of humour.
Who would like this book? Children who enjoy reading Roald Dahl's stories and those with a good sense of humour will definitely find this book interesting! The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

What is this book about? How is it connected to humour, jokes, irony and puns? The main character, Arthur Dent, thinks he's having a bad day when a bulldozer arrives to knock his house down. He soon learns the entire planet is being blown up, to which he responds, 'This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.' Arthur's dry wit makes this book laugh-out-loud funny as he reluctantly adventures through time and space.
Miss Willow has degrees in both science and creative writing. She loves any books that bring these Why do I enjoy it? two areas together, This is such a creative book, with a dozen brilliant ideas per page. The mix of clever concepts particularly when they and silly jokes is addictive, and I love the entire 'trilogy in five parts' that this book is the start make her laugh as of, as well as the original radio series it was based on. well. Who would like this book? It is the epitome of dry British comedy, so anyone who likes sarcasm and word-play will enjoy the writing, and science fans will particularly like the sci-fi concepts. No Reading Allowed: The Worst Read-Aloud Book Ever
by Raj Halder and Chris Carpenter

What is this book about? How is it connected to humour, jokes, irony and puns? This book is a collection of sentences with very similar pronunciation but drastically different meanings. When it’s read aloud, the content is confusing, but at the same time hilarious! Why do I enjoy it? It’s amazing that sentences which sound the same can have completely different meanings. For instance, ‘the hair comes forth’ and ‘the hare (rabbit) comes fourth’ are entirely different even though they sound identical. I enjoy how much this book surprises me and makes me smile. Who would like this book? Anyone who enjoys wordplay will love this book. The well-imagined pictures work perfectly with the mind-blowing sentences. Young and old readers alike will have a good laugh and even learn some new words and phrases too! 12
