Governor’s Update Hello, Mighty I-I District Key Clubbers! I hope all of you have been enjoying your summers. Even though school is out, Key Club definitely hasn’t slowed down! Just in the past 2 months, Key Clubbers across Illinois and Eastern Iowa have participated in numerous service projects and enriched their communities by doing so. Thank you for your dedication and hard work to change the world. Below, I have a couple of updated for you all about some cool things going on in our district. The information below is more general than specific, but more information regarding each point will be distributed by your respective Lieutenant Governor. 1. Fall Leadership Rallies—We will be having 4 FLRs this year. FLR is an awesome leadership event that is hosted by the I-I District Board. You will have the chance to… • Be trained for your Club Officer position • Learn more about our International Partners such as The Thirst Project and March of Dimes • Share interesting service project/ fundraising ideas with fellow Key Clubbers • Have fun participating in mini-service projects/fundraisers • Meet people who share the love for service that you do Dates and locations are still to be determined, but your Lieutenant Governor will share more specific details with you once they become available. 2. Instagram Account—The Illinois-Eastern Iowa District now has an Instagram Account! Please follow us! Our name is “iikeyclub.” Via Instagram, we will share pictures of Key Clubbers having fun while participating in service. We will also post pictures from conventions and get-togethers of the Kiwanis Family. If you would like to see your photos on our Instagram, please send them (via email or Facebook Message) to either Justin Wiggins or I. Your Lieutenant Governor would also be able to forward the photos to us.

3. Sister Districts and Our New Trustee—As of July 15th, we now have a new Key Club International Trustee for the 2015-2016 year. Amy Jiang from the Texas-Oklahoma District will be serving as our Trustee, along with our sister districts of Florida and Eastern Canada! Amy serves as a liaison between the sister districts to Key Club International. She will be able to help us in numerous ways, with providing information about service partners and even being there as a friend. Feel free to reach out to her! 4. Youth Opportunities Fund Grants—Key Club International provides grants every year so that Key Clubs may hold certain service projects and fundraisers. I definitely encourage you to apply for the YOF Grants! Key Club International does not receive many applications each year, so there is a very high chance that your club would be able to receive some funds. Your club can apply for grants anywhere between $100-$2000. Applications must be received by October 15th. Please click this link to learn more! 5. The Elemonate Challenge—I’m sure many of you have heard of The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis and Unicef’s initiative to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus from the globe. The Pacific Northwest District of Key Club has taken the project to a new level, with the Elemonate Challenge. Similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge, this challenge serves to raise money by using social media. All you have to do is… 1. Record a video of yourself eating 1/4 of a lemon 2. Pledge to donate to The Eliminate Project (at least $1.80) 3. Explain a little bit about Eliminate 4. Challenge your friends to participate in the challenge 5. Post the video to social media Feel free to participate in the challenge as a club service project, or even with your family and friends. Spread the word! Here’s the original video by the Pacific Northwest District.

If you have any questions about the above, please reach out to me! I will be more than happy to help. Enjoy the rest of summer! Yours in Service and Friendship,

Kristin John I-I District Key Club Governor

Hey, I-I Key Clubs! I hope you enjoyed your summer and had the chance to prepare for the year ahead of us. As horrible as it sounds, school is just around the corner. On the bright side, Key Club meetings and activities will be in full swing! Here are a few things to think about for your club: -Be sure that you have a plan to gain more members to your club! The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to gain membership, as freshmen are in search of activities to participate in. You can set up a booth at your school registration, hang posters throughout the school, or simply approach people on your own to get them to join. Take advantage of this time of the year to increase the growth of your club! -If your club is having trouble with keeping track of the amount of service hours provided to your community, then it might be time for you to think about implementing a new system that calculates it accurately. You could set up a Google spreadsheet that is accessible to all members, so they can submit their hours in. The spreadsheet can be programmed to calculate the hours of every individual in your club, which can make life easier. -Are you missing out on volunteer opportunities or just want to have more of them? If so, don’t be afraid to visit local community centers and ask if they need help with certain events or activities. Along with that, you can always come up with new service projects to do on your own. If you want some service project ideas, be sure to ask your Lt. Governor. They should have some great ideas! -Keep in mind that the next Club Monthly Report Form (MRF) is due on September 10th! This report should cover your Key Club’s events from June, July, and August. We always appreciates it when a club submits their Club MRF, since it allows us to assess the status of your clubs and think of ideas to help them. Make sure you’re keeping track of all the events going on in your club! Thank you and I wish everyone another great year of service! Yours in service, Peter Ju

I hope you’ve all been enjoying your summers! (Although, it’s very depressing to think that it’s almost over.) But let’s leave that to think about later. Instead, let’s think about Key Club! I attended Key Club International Convention over a month ago, and I’ve come back with a ton of information on how to be the best district treasurer ever (at least the best that I can be). And, of course, I want to share that information with you. So get ready! In this issue of my monthly newsletter, I just want to promote you all to look into helping out the three perferred charities of Key Club which are: March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network, and Unicef. I also wanted to focus your attention on fundraising for Spastic Paralysis! As the end of summer break is drawing near us, I hope you all continue to enjoy yourselves! Until next time! A Word from the Editor Hi I-I Key Clubbers, I can’t believe summer has already blown by! I hope all of you have had an enjoyable summer and whatever is left of each of yours! It has been my pleasure as your District Editor to create this Iolian for August. As Key Club starts up again in school this new school year, hopefully this newsletter gets you all excited for the year to come and what our district has to offer! I am glad to announce that our district now has an Article Submission Form for each of you to access on the District Website. This form is an easier way for submitting any articles for the Iolian to display what your club has done. Also, there is not a form for photos, however you may definitely send in any that you have pertaining to Key Club to my email below. If you have any questions regarding this form or an article submission, feel free to always contact at my email: editor.iikc@gmail.com. In addition, I would like alert all of you that the due date for the September Iolian submissions will be August 28th. I want to promote that you send in an article because it is nice to see what each of the clubs are doing in their schools and communities through the power of Key Club! Have a great year everyone! Yours in service, Mary Wegescheide

News from

International Trustee Amy Jiang Hello Illinois-Eastern Iowa Key Clubbers!

My name is Amy Jiang, and I have the distinct honor of serving as your international trustee this year. For my last year in Key Club, I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work and interact with my three districts: Florida, Illinois-Eastern Iowa, and Eastern Canada. I am eager to see the future obstacles we overcome and the successes we share. As a past club member, club president, and lieutenant governor, I have been moved, over and over again, by the passion and dedication of Key Clubbers. Now, as international trustee, I want to aid such individuals in their pursuit to serve their home, school, and community. By educating members about unsure topics and empowering individuals to use the available resources, I hope to create a united and informed member front. As an elected leader of Key Club, I serve you all. You all trusted that I would covey your comments from the district to international level, communicate international updates, and believe in your district with all my heart. Throughout this year, I want to prove that you have trusted in the right person for Trustee. Of course, this would not be possible without your help. So, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me! I look forward to a great service year with the mighty Illinois-Eastern Iowa district!

International President Rip Livingston

International Greetings, Key Club members!

Just a few weeks ago, our organization convened in Indianapolis for our annual International Convention alongside Circle K and Kiwanis International as we celebrated Kiwanis’ centennial birthday. It was an unforgettable experience for all, and that week, I was fortunate enough to be elected President of Key Club International. As International President, my job is to lead our organization for the next year; to set the vision of what Key Club is, should be, and will be; to supervise and work with your 11 International Trustees, ensuring that they serve and work with your district properly; to unite all 33 districts under our common mission, and to do everything in my power to leave this organization better than I found it when I leave office in 2016. Key Club has an exciting year ahead of it! We’re entering the last decade of our fist 100 years. We’re working everyday to make membership larger, stronger, and an experience that leaves all 270,000 satisfied. As a Key Club member, you’ve chosen to be a part of something greater than yourself. Greater than your home club, your division, or even your district; you’ve chosen to be one of the thousands of hands Key Club International unites for the greater good around the world. As the saying goes, “United we stand; Divided we fall”: Let’s unite, Key Club. We’re a global network of smart, inspired, capable servant leaders. Can you imagine what we can do when we come together? It’s an honor to be your leader this year. I wish you the very best in all of your endeavors this school year- Key Club and otherwise- and thank you sincerely for being a Key Clubber. Let’s have a fantastic year! Best regards, Rip Livingston President, Key Club International rlivingston@alabamakeyclub.org

O ICON

The Key Club International Convention was held in Indianapolis, Indiana from June 23rd-29th. The convention was joint with the Kiwanis, Aktion Club, and Circle K International Conventions. The week was packed with fun sessions and extremely helpful workshops, such as Membership 101 and even Homelessness in America. Students also were given the free time to explore downtown Indianapolis and just have a blast at convention. Some fun activities included playing laser tag, spending a day at a theme/water park, dancing the night away at the Eliminate Dance, and eating free (and delicious) pancakes from IHOP. If the activities mentioned didn’t sound amazing enough, Key Clubbers also got the wonderful opportunity to attend the Kiwanis 100 World Showcase, and even got to see the increasingly popular band Hellogoodbye in concert!

Recap The 2015-2016 Key Club International Board was elected, with Rip Livingston from the Alabama District chosen to be our International President. Maria Palazzolo, the Immediate Past Key Club International President from Springfield, IL, was retired. We thank her for all of the service and dedication she has provided to Key Club these past four years, and we wish her luck in college! In addition to the election of new officers, many clubs and individuals were honored with various awards. Shout out to the following people/clubs for their outstanding accomplishments this past year, and for truly showcasing their incredible and inspiring dedication to service. The Illinois-Eastern Iowa District had one of the highest numbers of attendance to ICON in the past couple of years! We had 72 students, and 5 advisors on the tour. All 77 of us had a great time celebrating the 90 years of Key Club, and the 100 years of Kiwanis at ICON. It truly was an amazing experience! If you did not get the chance to attend ICON this year, don’t fret! ICON 2016 will be in Atlanta, Georgia next summer. We hope you will come along and experience the international side of Key Club, and have a 15 blast doing so!

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 49,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. However, with the power of Key Club, we can make a difference and get involved! At ICON, IPP Maria Palazzolo pledged that Key Club would raise 3 million dollars toward the ELIMINATE project. This new pledge will save more than 1.6 million lives. As of July 16, 2015, the Kiwanis family has raised 7,262,695$ for the ELIMINATE project. This vast amount of money has saved over 4 million lives. That is amazing. Keep it up K-Family!

The ELEMONATE Challege Similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge, this challenge serves to raise money by using social media. All you have to do is‌ 1.

International The Thirst Project About 780 million people on our planet don’t have access to safe, clean water. Even worse, 4,400 kids under the age of five will die today from drinking dirty water. Those are disturbing statistics—and we’re doing something about it. Key Club International is teaming up with The Thirst Project, the world's leading youth water-activism organization.

Unicef Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has empowered generations to make lasting change in their global community. Over the years, Key Clubbers have fundraised for iodine deficiency programs, HIV and AIDS programs, Operation Uruguay: Protecting the Rights of Children and the Eliminate Project. We are still fundraising to eliminate neonatal and maternal tetanus from the world by raising our goal of US$110 million. We have already raised a total of US$87,844,621.05. (For more information, click here!)

Children’s Miracle Network

24

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. Since Children's Miracle Network Hospitals first broadcast in 1983, Kiwanis has donated more than US$36 million to help make miracles happen for local sick and injured kids. (For more information, click here!)

Partners March of Dimes The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Since 1978, Key Clubs have hosted fundraising and awareness programs to support the March of Dimes, raising over $116,000 through fundraisers in 2011 alone! (For more information, click here!)

Spastic Paralysis Fundraising Spastic Paralysis isn’t an illness, but it is a symptom of various diseases and medical conditions of the central nervous system. It causes spasticity, which is stiff or rigid muscles that interfere with basic motions, speech, or walking. In 1952, the Illinois-Eastern Iowa Kiwanis created the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation to fund and support medical and scientific researchers dedicated researching Spastic Paralysis and other diseases related to the central nervous system. In 1980, Key Club became involved with fundraising for Spastic Paralysis. Over 4 million dollars have been invested in research grants. It has been our district project for over 30 years! In the last year, the I-I District has raised $21,810! Now that you know what Spastic Paralysis is, now is the time to get started if you haven’t already started fundraising for Spastic Paralysis!
