Governor’s Update Hello, Mighty I-I District Key Clubbers! I hope all of you have been enjoying your summers. Even though school is out, Key Club definitely hasn’t slowed down! Just in the past 2 months, Key Clubbers across Illinois and Eastern Iowa have participated in numerous service projects and enriched their communities by doing so. Thank you for your dedication and hard work to change the world. Below, I have a couple of updated for you all about some cool things going on in our district. The information below is more general than specific, but more information regarding each point will be distributed by your respective Lieutenant Governor. 1. Fall Leadership Rallies—We will be having 4 FLRs this year. FLR is an awesome leadership event that is hosted by the I-I District Board. You will have the chance to… Be trained for your Club Officer position • Learn more about our International Partners such as The Thirst Project and March of Dimes • Share interesting service project/ fundraising ideas with fellow Key Clubbers • Have fun participating in mini-service projects/fundraisers • Meet people who share the love for service that you do • Dates and locations are still to be determined, but your Lieutenant Governor will share more specific details with you once they become available. 2. Instagram Account—The Illinois-Eastern Iowa District now has an Instagram Account! Please follow us! Our name is “iikeyclub.” Via Instagram, we will share pictures of Key Clubbers having fun while participating in service. We will also post pictures from conventions and get-togethers of the Kiwanis Family. If you would like to see your photos on our Instagram, please send them (via email or Facebook Message) to either Justin Wiggins or I. Your Lieutenant Governor would also be able to forward the photos to us. 3. Sister Districts and Our New Trustee—As of July 15th, we now have a new Key Club International Trustee for the 2015-2016 year. Amy Jiang from the Texas-Oklahoma District will be serving as our Trustee, along with our sister districts of Florida and Eastern Canada! Amy serves as a liaison between the sister districts to Key Club International. She will be able to help us in numerous ways, with providing information about service partners and even being there as a friend. Feel free to reach out to her!

4. Youth Opportunities Fund Grants—Key Club International provides grants every year so that Key Clubs may hold certain service projects and fundraisers. I definitely encourage you to apply for the YOF Grants! Key Club International does not receive many applications each year, so there is a very high chance that your club would be able to receive some funds. Your club can apply for grants anywhere between $100-$2000. Applications must be received by October 15th. Please click this link to learn more!

5. The Elemonate Challenge—I’m sure many of you have heard of The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis and Unicef’s initiative to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus from the globe. The Pacific Northwest District of Key Club has taken the project to a new level, with the Elemonate Challenge. Similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge, this challenge serves to raise money by using social media. All you have to do is… 1. Record a video of yourself eating 1/4 of a lemon 2. Pledge to donate to The Eliminate Project (at least $1.80) 3. Explain a little bit about Eliminate 4. Challenge your friends to participate in the challenge 5. Post the video to social media Feel free to participate in the challenge as a club service project, or even with your family and friends. Spread the word! Here’s the original video by the Pacific Northwest District. If you have any questions about the above, please reach out to me! I will be more than happy to help. Enjoy the rest of summer! Yours in Service and Friendship,

Kristin John I-I District Key Club Governor

Statistical Secretary’s Update Hello, I-I District! I hope everyone is enjoying the summer so far! Summer break is a great time to kick back and relax, but it’s also the perfect time to prepare for the Key Club year ahead of us. Here are a few things I’d like to go over: -Club Monthly Report Form submissions are a vital tool for the district board to assist everyone in the I-I District! If you haven’t submitted some of the Club Monthly Report Forms, please use the remainder of your summer break to get caught up on those. We’d love to assess the current status of your club and assist you in any way possible. -Last year, we had a Facebook group page for all of the club officers in the I-I District. This group page allowed the district board to post reminders and any important information to all of the officers in the district. Besides sharing information, this page provided club officers the opportunity to address any issues they had. Our hope is that this will unify all of the club officers and increase interclub communication throughout the entire district. All of the Lt. Governors that have a Facebook were added on to the group page named "2015-2016 I-I District Key Club Officers." If you are an officer and you’re interested in joining this Facebook group page, please contact your Lt. Governor so he or she can add you to it. -Just a small reminder that we will be going back to our routine for submitting the Club Monthly Report Form on September 10th! This monthly report form should cover the club events of June, July, and August. Please make sure it is sent in by the 10th of September! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication! Yours in service, Peter Ju

Treasurer’s Update Unpaid Clubs for the 2014-2015 Key Club Year

Hi I-I Key Clubbers! I hope you’ve all been enjoying your summers! (Although, it’s very depressing to think that it’s almost over.) But let’s leave that to think about later. Instead, let’s think about Key Club! I attended Key Club International Convention over a month ago, and I’ve come back with a ton of information on how to be the best district treasurer ever (at least the best that I can be). And, of course, I want to share that information with you. So get ready! I just want to promote you all to look into helping out the three preferred charities of Key Club which are: March of Dimes, Unicef, and Children’s Miracle Network. I also wanted to focus your attention on fundraising for Spastic Paralysis! As the end of summer break is drawing near us, I hope you all continue to enjoy yourselves! Until next time! Together in Service, Jennifer Zhuo

Benton Consolidated High School (Div. 33) Lakes Community High School (Div. 7) Moline High School (Div. 17) Morrisonville High School (Div. 30) Peoria (Central) High School (Div. 20W) Rock Island High School (Div. 17) Thank you to all paid clubs! If any of the clubs in your division are on this list please make sure that they submit dues ASAP! Not paying dues means risking the club’s charter and losing a great opportunity to serve their community! I plan to send out an email to the clubs listed above, concerning their unpaid dues in the near future. If you or your clubs have any questions about submitting dues or believe they have already submitted their dues, please don’t hesitate to contact me, I’m only an email or a phone call away. Updated as of 7/21/15

Due Dates: •October 1st: Clubs can start submitting dues •November 1st: Early Bird Deadline (you will receive an awesome patch for your banner!)

•December 1st: Regular Deadline These dates may seem a lifetime away, but they’ll sneak up on you very quickly! Contact your Lieutenant Governor or myself at treasurer.iikc@gmail.org for more information on the dues process.

Secretary’s Update Hi everyone! I hope that you have all enjoyed your summer very much. After all, it is soon coming to an end as the back-to-school supplies section at Target would like us to know! This newsletter contains information on rosters, our master directory, and the district guide. I hope they will help you as we kick start the school year! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Here’s to an awesome year of service! Yours in service, Jennifer Kuo

Officer Rosters A big thank you to everyone that has sent in their officer rosters for the last few months! Our goal as a district board is to have 50% of each division to have turned in their officer rosters. I am happy to say that many divisions have achieved this while others are getting close. There is still time! Clubs I would like to stress the importance of rosters and having them turned in before the due date. Also, September 17th is the deadline for the Roster In On Time Award.

Hi I-I Key Clubbers, I can’t believe summer has already blown by! I hope all of you have had an enjoyable summer and whatever is left of each of yours! It has been my pleasure as your District Editor to create this Club Mailing for August. As Key Club starts up again in school this new school year, hopefully this newsletter gets you all excited for the year to come and what our district has to offer! I am glad to announce that our district now has an Article Submission Form for each of you to access on the District Website. This form is an easier way for submitting any articles for the Iolian to display what your club has done. Also, there is not a form for photos, however, you may definitely send in any that you have pertaining to Key Club to my email below. If you have any questions regarding this form or an article submission, feel free to always contact me at my email: editor.iikc@gmail.com. In addition, I would like alert all of you that the due date for the September Iolian submissions will be August 28th. I want to promote that you send in an article because it is nice to see what each of the clubs are doing in their schools and communities through the power of Key Club! Yours in service, Mary Wegescheide

K-Family Update In the K– Family, one of the most important relations is the bond between Key Club and Kiwanis. Kiwanis does so much for our clubs and its members! They are very resourceful and love to help out wherever and when ever they can. They are able to provide extra workers for service projects, or they could help give your club members extra money when they are trying to go to different events like District Convention/Leadership Conference or Key Leader. We encourage each club to take some time to thank their sponsoring Kiwanis Club for everything they’ve done and see how you can return the favor to help them. Also, plan a service event for this upcoming school year to join your Key Club and Kiwanis Club together. Another important bond is the bond between Key Club and Circle K. This relationship will get people interested in getting involved in their Circle K if they attend college. A nearby Circle K is also great to get in touch with if you need help with an upcoming project or event! A lot of the CKI members have been through Key Club and they love to help out at all of our service projects and fundraisers. If you are having trouble with your sponsoring Kiwanis Club, or you do not have a sponsoring Kiwanis Club, contact anyone that is on the K-Family committee and we will do everything we can to help!

Awards Update One of the objects of Key Club International is “to promote the adoption and application of higher standards in scholarship. Working towards an award this year will fulfill this objective as one is recognized for all the effort they have put forth this year. Awards are essential in allowing one to feel appreciated, encouraging maximization of full potential. One award continually given out to Key Clubbers is the Member of the Month award. Club Secretaries, please remind utilize the Member of the Month submission located at the end of the Monthly Report Form to any Key Club member who has shown noteworthy dedication and passion to serve their clubs. Other large awards require yearlong achievement: Individual and Club Award applications must be postmarked by January 21st and received by January 26th to Lauren Dvorak. Miscellaneous Awards: Scholarship, Outstanding Kiwanis Advisor, Outstanding Faculty Advisor and Sandy Nininger Awards applications are due to Mr. Hall by January 11th. The Annual Achievement Report, Single Service and Major Emphasis Awards are due to Mr. Hall by February 19th. Club Awards for viewing at DCLC are the Talent and Oratorical Contests. These submissions are due by February 29th to Margaret Toniny. The Poster, Club Video and Scrapbook Awards are due the first day of DCLC, March 11th by 6 pm in the awards room. Specific addresses will be given at a later date. The Awards Booklet from last year can be accessed from the I-I Key Club website. The 2015-2016 version will be become accessible on August 8th. Remember working towards awards is a year-long process-it all starts NOW!

Major Emphasis Update Hello I-I District Key Clubs! As you all know, school is right around the corner, and you know what that means! That’s right, soon your clubs will start having their first Key Club meetings of the school year! Let’s start the year off with a bang! In this newsletter you will find all of the new, fun, and cool ways to donate to the service projects that Key Club International holds so close to their heart.

Similar to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, The ELEMONATE Challenge raises awareness and funds for The Eliminate Project! Every 11 minutes, a baby is lost to Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). This can be prevented by providing a mother with three vaccines with a totaling cost of US$1.80. By participating in The ELEMONATE Challenge, you can join Key Club and Kiwanis in eliminating MNT from the world! I challenge all of you to participate in the challenge by eating 1/4 of a lemon as well as donating to The Eliminate Project. Don't forget to record your reaction and challenge your friends! Another great service partner that Key Club International works with is the Children’s Miracle Network. Some great ways to volunteer for this organization would be to make cards for the children in the hospital, hold a dance-a-thon and donate the money raised, and to make care packages for the families staying in the hospital. For more information about Children’s Miracle Network: click here.

The mission of the Thirst Project is to build a generation of people who END the global water crisis. We do this by educating students and activating them to rock the clean water cause & build real water projects around the world. Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined. To help with this important cause you can hold a walk-a-thon, a dance, or just raise funds to donate to the project. For more information on the Thirst Project and fundraising ideas, click here.

Halloween is only a few months away, and it’s time to get ready for Trick or Treat for UNICEF! Trick or Treat for UNICEF is a fun, easy way to raise money for a great cause! All you have to do is go “trick-or-treating” on Halloween and ask people if they would like to donate to UNICEF. It’s that easy! In order to order boxes for this great fundraiser, click here.

March of Dimes is an organization that funds lifesaving research and programs and works to end premature births, birth defects and infant mortality. How can you help? Ways you can volunteer and help out with this great cause is to hold fundraisers such as dances, auctions, and other contests, as well as participating in the annual March for Babies. For more information visit, click here.

New Club Building Updates Hello! This is your New Club Building and Reactivation Chair, Jessica Trinh, here with information regarding new clubs! As you may know, the process to starting a new club is not simple; it requires finding a meeting place, a faculty advisor, and a Kiwanis advisor. Yet at the same time, you all know how rewarding it is to have a Key Club, and the connections it offers to students. Currently, the goals of our committee are to charter 15 clubs, with at least one K-kids and one Builders Club. We have created red, yellow, and green goals to mark our progress. In this sense, achieving even a red goal (chartering 10 clubs total) will still feel rewarding, even if it's not our 15 club goal! I encourage all of you to consider other clubs around your school that might be interested in a new club! If you can think of one, please email me at newclubchair.iikc@gmail.com or one of the other committee members: Ally Choi (ltg2527.iikc@gmail.com) Tatum Grooms (ltg7.iikc@gmail.com) Madison Taylor (ltg9.iikc@gmail.com) Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! I hope you will contact me with any comments or concerns!

I-I Tech Tips Hi Key Clubbers! Over the summer, our Tech and PR committee has done a lot of work on making the website more appealing and easy to navigate. We still have a ways to go, but here are some of the changes we have made: •Moved the navigation to the top as requested by many. •Made a slider (shown to the right) to display current district news. •Made a photo feed to showcase the work of the mighty I-I district. It is shown below, and as you can see, we need more pictures! Please email them or Facebook message them to me. Please add a caption for it! •Removed some outdated content. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are progressing along nicely.

Tools for Clubs We also have the best tech tools for clubs! These will help members stay in touch, help with event planning, and also assist in reminding members about events.

16

Remind Your teacher might use this, but your club can also. Remind can be used to mass text club members. This is great for event reminders. GroupMe This is an awesome service that anyone can use. GroupMe allows group conversations and media sharing like Facebook Messenger, but you don’t need an account, and it works with any phone, or online.

Board Email Update This summer, our Tech and PR Committee has also been updating our email and collaboration system. Instead of using a separate Gmail for each member, we are implementing a solution by Microsoft that makes all of our email, storage, and video conferencing in-house. It’s called Office 365, and it helps us work together and with clubs more efficiently. Emails will eventually change, but for the foreseeable future, we will continue to use our Gmail addresses to contact members and clubs. On behalf of the Tech and PR Committee, I wish you all a good school year, and please contact me with any questions Justin Wiggins Tech Chair (815) 757-1698 techchair@iikeyclub.org
