ecently the print and electronic media flashed a few scenes of celebration as the city rejoiced Rahman's incredible feat at the Oscars. Even the normally reticent Tollywood joined the gaiety. Of course without criticism that there was anything Indian about Slumdog Millionaire. Call it hysteria if you want but the almost everyone from students to filmstars and other strata of society proudly recalled the Oscar awards on the telly with lingering memories of Jai Ho created by Rahman. Whether it is the man on the street or a super star from the film industry, all were part of the euphoria sweeping the country. One must accept that Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire received criticism because of it's realistic approach.

fter Arundhati became a hit many heroines have decided to experiment with female oriented subjects. Pretty Mamata Mohandas too looks forward for such a script. “Some directors have approached me with such themes and I feel capable of enacting the role with grace” she says.
But she was recently disappointed with the outcome of her film King. “Though I put my heart and soul into the character like a professional my role was trimmed by the makers of the film. I became a little upset. But I won’t give up.” she added.

In his recent film Drona, Nitin met with an accident and hurt his face by a tube light. “I had to undergo plastic surgery to take the scar off my face” he added.

stad Amjad Ali Khan was all a lad of 6 years old when he gave his first recital of Sarod that was yet a glorious chapter in the history of Indian classical music. Tutored by his father Haafiz Ali Khan and followed the illustrious Bangash lineage rooted in the Senia Bangash School of Music. Today he shoulders the sixth generation inheritance of this legendary lineage.
And thus, the world saw the Sarod being given a new and yet timeless interpretation by maestro Amjad Ali Khan who considers his audience to be the soul of his motivation. Recently Hyderabad witnessed Ustad Amjad Ali's concerto with the 50 odd members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra at an event Samaagam organized by Seagram's 200 Pipers Pure Music in association with Scotland and the British Council. In an interview with Hyderabad Josh he shared a lot of views ranging from fashion to politics. Here is the gist of our conversation with the Ustad. Hailing from a traditional system how did he gel with foreign musicians. Ustadji reacts "I've always solo, or with my sons or a duet. Every time I feel it's a different thing. Having met brilliant musicians from all over the globe

I am glad they decided to visit India and specially the discipline of a 150 musicians who can together produce a single sound" He feels that the Indian classical musicians are stubborn and egoistic. But in the name of fusion and collaboration are we not getting a little too commercial about Indian classical music."No I think fusion and collaboration tends to promote a tradition and by maintaining distinct identities we can make music together. Commenting on the gharana system he says "every music has an identity and it's limitations. You are at liberty to play anyway you want if you don't want to stick to it"
Continuing our conversation he says "music is universal.The sound is the same all over. It's either the 12 notes or the western do-re-mi-fa-so-la. Alright how does a Sarod with it's classical tag gel with western music? It is an entirely new concept of blending a singing instrument since a Sarod can produce depth in the music from its belly as it is covered with skin. Frankly, I do enjoy playing my Sarod with western instruments as well".
But how he feel when his sons Ayaan and Amaan are different from him? "Yes,they have digressed from the strict classical rules to create something of their own. It seems that his sons have slowly forayed into Bollywood and tease their papa to join them but Ustadji feels that his hair doesn't grow as fast as his sons. That's why he can't. Of course he feels safe playing with his sons but in an orchestra he admits that he is playing a role".
Can he excite the youth with a classical Sarod and Western fusion ? "It's true people are excited whenever there is something new like an amalgamation. Age does not matter as a target audience. The focus here is on collaboration than fusion. You can tell the difference when an elephant walks gracefully or a rat is running swiftly. What lingers in your mind is nobody's guess" he says.
But did he face any security problems while traveling or playing a concert? "Yes, we were scared to perform after hearing of the Mumbai blasts but I convinced the western artistes about their safety. So whether in a crowd or being alone we Indians have to take of ourselves unlike politicians who need commandos. I am an artiste and wish to be in future" he added.

Venkatesh and Charmme were given the best actor and best actress awards respectively.Krishna Vamsi.received the best director's award. A bunch of local artistes were displaying their histrionics keeping the audience engrossed with comedy and other cultural programmes. It is very heartening to note that Damodar's children are very polite and well-mannered even towards the subordinate staff and make them feel at home unlike normal children of the police department who show disrespect to such people. The staff too reciprocates when his children address them as uncle and aunty. This is indeed good upbringing.

ello! Let's call the police. Can I ask you what for? A police officer is never called when things are going well. They are only called when there is a problem-usually a critical one. It is only natural that police receive the criticism even after rendering a favor to the public. After all, their job is loaded with the responsibility of bringing order out of chaos or enforcing the rules. Am I right? Police officers in the twenty-first century have technological advantages at their disposal to help them solve crimes, but most rely primarily on training and instinct to do their work.. The widespread introduction of telephones and automobiles made it easier for police to respond quickly to emergencies. One of the major goals of many police departments is getting cooperation from

within the community. The emergence of computerized records and databases make it easy for police organizations across the country and even overseas to exchange information about suspects and criminals or in emergency situations such as fires, explosions, or natural disasters. E. Damodar IPS gets ready for a verbal encounter at his sojourn as we start shooting queries about his job and personal life to make this reading more exciting. Well, how did it all begin? "I come from a very humble background and we are the first family to have received formal education. My elder sister and her husband are practicing psychiatrists settled in Chicago. Another sister lives in our native village. My youngest sister is at Bhopal with her husband who is an IAS
Officer of 1986 batch. While I was doing my degree with English as my Major there was an advertisement from the Banking Services Recruitment Board and other public sector undertakings scouting for candidates who had scored a first class. Fortunately, I topped in all of them (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Indian Overseas Bank and Reserve Bank). Since I always desired the administrative services I preferred the south based Indian Overseas Bank. I declined the Reserve Bank of India and HAL as postings would be in north or north east of India since I wanted to be closer to home and prepare for the civil services examination. After my stint at the Indian Overseas Bank luck was still eluding me to the IAS and other examinations. I had got offers from other services like P&T finance and accounts and Central Information Service but I didn't
feel like joining. Simultaneously I applied for the Group I Services but as the outcome could be notified after nearly five years due to prolonged litigation, I had to continue with IOB.” He adds “my transition from one career to another is very much edificatory. I resigned on a Saturday and on a Sunday I traveled from Tirupati to Hyderabad. My stint in the banking sector in various levels and wings such as foreign exchange, money transfer and money issues, credit policies, advances, documentation etc. has immensely helped me in career as a Police Officer. I had made an extempore presentation on the grass root realities to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the banking sector and apprised them about the irregularities that take place". He clarifies “In the police department events overtake everything. One gets eclipsed with another hence it is difficult to schedule anything. Today could be a day of emergencies and contingencies and tomorrow just like a normal day. A normal day begins at around 5.30 am meeting like minded friends in the neighborhood during the morning walk for about an hour and chatting along. There are times when I am on my way to the movies with my family but all of a sudden I get an official call. That's it. I just switch over to the call of duty which initially used to irritate my wife but now she understands my job. Good for me and her too. Such predicaments are just taken with a smile and a pinch of salt. That's how life goes on". Talking about socializing he says” whether official or personal I do not mingle with everyone but likeminded people with whom I have a comfort level. I accept such invitations where even my family can interact in an intimate manner and enjoy the outing. As such non official time is devoted to the family which I consider my hobby. Reading a book of my choice in privacy gives me a lot of pleasure. The luxury of contemplating over a well written book is lacking nowadays. Ramprasad the promoter of Walden always updates me with the latest arrivals of books at his store. The Sunday pavement market at Abids road is another favorite haunt. Surprisingly, I picked a book for Rs.2/- by Aurobindo on Shakespeare much to the disbelief of an English professor who confessed ignorance that Aurobindo discoursed on Shakespeare” Of course once a week we make it to a movie and to a little bit of shopping. My favorite place with family is Our Place at Banjara Hills on road no.10 which I consider the best for its ambience, quality of food and personal care from the staff. Kamat Hotel in Lakdi ka pul is another place that we patronize”.

With a twinkle in his eye he shares some of his adventures "I was at the bank for two years as probationary officer at Delhi and Bhubaneshwar and later four and a half years at Tirupati, my native place. After joining the police department I was Deputy Superintendent of police in the law and order wing in Guntur and Visakhapatnam districts. I had an interlude as an Assault Commander in Grey Hounds, in Anti-corruption Bureau at Nellore and Kurnool. Later I got my first level promotion as additional SP in Kurnool district, deputy commissioner of police (task force) and again SP for VIP security and then I was conferred with the Indian Police Service (IPS) . For personal reasons I declined to go to SP Anantapur but I moved to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam as Chief Vigilance and Security officer which was the best part of my career with a feeling that God had given me an opportunity to serve him. To put it aptly Vishwak Sena the commander of the gods army. Later I came to Hyderabad commanding the Andhra Pradesh Special Police Battalion,as superintendent of police, Ranga Reddy district, deputy commissioner of police (crimes) Cyberabad. Presently I am Deputy Commissioner of Police, Headquarters at Hyderbad.

Does he like movies? "Of course I used to like the movies by Sobhan Babu. Really I do not go by the star but by the story with a moral. But I find the present day movies scandalous hence I go for the sake of entertainment as I have no other option. Recently, I watched Godavari on Zee TV which was really wonderful and refreshing" he added.. All your views makes one feel that a life of a police officer is real tough doesn't it? "Well, what looks extraordinary to others is very ordinary to us. The happiest incident is that as a police officer hundreds of personnel are committed to my charge when I was commanding them. Your Hobbies-Food, exercise, perfumes, dress? i love singing, playing soccer, salsa, belly dancing , a little bit of guitar . i don't really follow a diet and I eat anything as i do not tend to gain much weight but i still make it a point to hit the gym to tone myself up I love perfumes and I shop a lot of them and my favorite perfumes are Estee Lauder, Glow by Jennifer Lopez, Tommy Hilfiger and many more. i prefer wearing comfortable clothes because if I'm not comfortable I'm not confident.. A model's life is risky/good money but short-lived. It's not just a model's life that is risky. I think every profession has a certain risk in its own way...according to me all the moments come to an end be it good or bad...life itself is short lived so you've got to make the most of anything that comes your way. The statues of goddesses in temples depict curves and angles then how come people frown on models who wear scanty clothes. Is this justified? It is ones personal opinion... you see a lot of difference when it comes to the statues and models.Also the way it is portrayed by certain models is hard to accept in a society, i think the number of ugly incidents that happen around the world is the main reason why people frown on not only models but any girl wearing scanty clothes. What is the career span of a model ? It depends on how far the model wants it to go...and it depends on the hardwork as to how much one earns ..there is a lot of competition that's true..but it depends on you to make a mark.

ainting is the practice of applying color to a surface such as paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer or concrete. In an artistic sense, the term painting means the use of this activity in combination with drawing, composition and other aesthetic considerations in order to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner.
Painting is used as a mode of representing, documenting and expressing all the varied intents and subjects that are as numerous as there are practitioners of the craft. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in a still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolism, emotion or be political in nature. A large portion of the history of painting is dominated by spiritual motifs and ideas; sites of this kind of painting range from artwork depicting mythological figures on pottery to religious scenes rendered on the interior walls and ceiling of caves to depictions of the human body itself as a spiritual subject. Chippa Sudhakar's painting's are primarily based on the intricate relationship patterns between men and women and his paintings attempt to explore the nuances of these subtle links. He executes his fantasies on wood, combining the art of laying colour, with that of carving. A childhood spent in rural areas, and his present residence in a farmhouse studio in Hyderabad, have had an impact on his work, as a result of which, his paintings have a distinct touch of folk art. ? It is conspicuous that he is obsessed subjects is a dream; water too is an ever-present factor, in the form of rain, streams, boats and fish, a faithful recreation of the reality of village life. Because of the nature of the material he works with, Sudhakar uses natural colours whenever possible. Sepia, ochre, black and beige, in acrylic, are the dominant hues utilised to paint out the figures that he fashions from the plank itself. Metals, such as copper attached with wires, provide a contrasting element of colour as well as texture, relieving the eye from the preponderance of wood. ? Sudhakar graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the J.N.T. University in Hyderabad. From there, he went on to do a Post Diploma in Graphics from the M. S. University, Baroda in 1990. He has been honoured with the Bombay Art Society Award, 1993, the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath Award, Bangalore, 1993, and the award of the Hyderabad Art Society, 1994. He participated in the National Print Exhibition, and the Drawing Exhibition, at the Bank Side Gallery, both in London, in 1995. He has also exhibited in several cities of India. An interlude with the creative artist Are you an artist, painter and sculptor? Please clarify. I have motivated myself as an artist by observation but I must say that I drew a lot of inspiration from Vaikuntam, Laxma Goud and Surya Prakash. I like to handle all mediums from sculptor to print making. For almost a decade I was busy with print making after I did

my masters degree from Baroda. Even now I would like to incorporate print making techniques such as wood cutting and wood carving into my paintings since I am comfortable with both mediums. Would you like to print your paintings on bill boards? What you see on the bill boards is purely a commercial piece of work by a group of people in an advertising agency. I work alone on a canvas and it's a one man piece. But I wouldn't mind if any agency wants to publicise my paintings I will quote a price. Hence the nature of work is different. Could you cite a few famous painters? We are all familiar with Picasso, Da Vinchi, M F Hussain and our Indian guru of painters Ravi Varma who made the pictures of all gods like Durga,Hanuman, Saraswati, Laxmi and Ganesh to list a few. In fact he was the innovator of the print making technique who visualized the gods perfectly. Tell me something about your studios and shows? I have three studios in Hyderabad and I want to have a small one in USA also so that I can visit once a while for change of environment and learn a lot from their gallery and museums.During my earlier visit I was shuttling between New York and Boston and I got some of their works to Hyderabad. What motivates people to buy art? There are different kinds of people. The lovers and the buyers. In India it is mostly a status symbol that a piece of art just decorates the living room of the person who owns it. But abroad a person will buy art because it is really appealing and impressive sometimes even not knowing the name of the person who made it. What is abstract painting? Abstract painting is also another creative technique where one may digress from the normal rules of painting. A person may use canvas, floor or anything surface that can be used to draw an image. It is a very unconventional way of handling the brush and paint like a famous painter Pollock used to do. How much would a good painting cost? It's hard to say this because it depends on how the creative buyer looks at it. To clarify let me say it's around Rs.8000 to 10,000 per sq ft. There are no hard and fast rules in this creative field. The design, reputation
and market value of the artist is also very important. For example M F Hussain's paintings command altogether a different price range. Are your paintings made to order or you create whatever you visualize? Of course earlier I was caught in such a situation but I managed to wriggle out of it. It is very bad for anyone to dictate terms to a creative painter about color, landscape or theme because it hampers the flow of thought. That's the reason why I keep shuffling from one studio to another to keep the creative juices flowing without being interrupted. One should explore oneself. Has digital technology affected artists? Not really because one has to be creative even while using digital technology to make a creative piece. But one thing is for sure it does take a longer time to create a piece of art on the canvas. Tell us about your awards? Yes I have received a lot of awards one among was the Hussain Bhindre award from Mumbai Arts Society which I cherish. I am also a member of the Royal Society of painters and print makers of London where I exhibited my art. In India showing nude women on a magazine or newspaper is considered pornography but how come most of our temples are sculpted with semi-nude goddesses? I feel this is only a political and religious issue. Even M F Hussain did paint Hindu gods in the nude but it's only a creative and spontaneous thought for an artist and nothing beyond. People generally misunderstand artists. What are the prospects of job for new artists? Any sponsorships? My first trip to US was sponsored by Kala Jyoti which served as launching pad for my interaction with foreigners. The youngsters are nowadays are smart and a combination of digital and traditional techniques can help them get jobs as web designers, or set designers for television and movies.

Thai Honey Chilli Artichoke (Wok Tossed Artichoke with Honey, Chilli and Basil)
INGREDIENTS 1. Artichokes 02 nos. 2. Oil 200 ml. 3. Corn flour 50 gms. 4. Refined flour 50 gms. 5. Garlic (chopped) 20 gms. 6. Chili paste 15 gms. 7. Tomato ketchup 30 gms. 8. Honey 15 ml. 9. Sesame seeds 03 gms. 10.Banana leaves and Lettuce for garnish 11. Salt and Pepper to taste
PROCEDURE Slice the artichoke and season with salt and pepper. Dust with corn flour. Make a batter with refined flour and water. Dip the artichokes in the batter and deep fry till golden brown. Add 30 ml of oil in a wok. Add garlic and stir fry for 30 seconds. Add chili paste, tomato ketchup, honey and sesame seeds.
Add the fired artichoke and toss well.
On a plate, place the banana leaf. Place the artichokes on the banana leaf. Garnish with fresh red chili, onion rings, sesame seeds and lettuce leaves.

After finishing a professional course in catering from Mumbai in 1991 Sachin Joshi did his first stint at the Oberoi in Mumbai and worked in the French kitchen, brassiere and Kandhar. Then he headed to the Holiday Inn at Pune. After that he launched Encounters at the Taj Krishna in Hyderabad. Later as Executive Chef he worked with Taj Residency in Aurangabad and Lucknow. Presently he is the Executive Chef in the Taj Deccan at Hyderabad. He had the opportunity of working with different chefs to pick up cuisines of the French, Italian, Lebanese, German and Tahi apart from North and South Indian Cuisines. Recently Chef Sachin Joshi presented the unique Shellfish in Ciroc Fest at the Arena the all-day international dining outlet in Taj Deccan. Truly Sachin has a stylish grace that is really appealing.
Lemon Grass Scented Saffron Risotto with Grilled Pink Salmon and Leek Confit INGREDIENTS 1. Arborio rice 50 gms. 2. Pink salmon (cut into steaks) 180 gms. 3. Lemon grass (Chopped) 50 gms. 4. Onion (Chopped) 10 gms. 5. Garlic (Chopped) 05 gms. 6. Leeks (Thinly sliced) 10 gms. 7. Butter 50 gms. 8. Ciroc Vodka 100 mls. 9. Salt to taste 10. Black pepper (Freshly crushed) to taste 11. Fresh cream 30 ml. 12. Cherry tomato 01 nos. 13. Saffron A pinch
PROCEDURE
Heat water in a pan, add salt and bring it to a boil.
Marinate the salmon with salt and pepper and rest in the refrigerator. Melt 30 ml of butter in a pan. Add onions, garlic and lemon grass and sautĂŠ. Add raw Arborio rice. Stir fry the rice till all rice is coated with butter.
Deglaze the pan with Ciroc Vodka. Add the boiling water to the rice in batches and cook till rice is al dante. Add a pinch of saffron and gently mix well. Finish with a blob of butter
Mean while, heat up a grill plate and place the salmon (skin side first) and grill it to the doneness of desire.
In a pan, melt butter. Add cream and whisk into a homogeneous mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Place the risotto on a plate. Place the salmon on the rice and garnish with cherry tomato. Spoon the sauce around the salmon. One may add vegetables to the preparation if desired.

I'm Diana Pillai-Director of Marketing at the Hyderabad Marriott Convention Hotel.I've been with the Marriott for 16 years and in India for exactly an year.
Actually my father is from south India and mother from Sri Lanka so I went to university in Chennai .So India is really not new to me and I've always been fascinated and adapted really well. This is indeed half my home.
We have to look at the postive and the negative. The positive is that our rooms are overlooking over a beautiful lake and we have one of the best sunsets that you can ever see. The negative part is that of nature. The lake is sometimes used for different purposes. But this is part of India and so this is Hyderabad. It can sometimes be noisy, smelly , cars honking by. But that's incredible India.

I never ever thought that I would get into the hospitality industry. While I was doing my university in Chennai the Taj group of hotels had just started a graduate degree management program. So during my summer session I was not doing anything much so I thought let me try. I really got hooked on it and got a job offer at the Taj Connemara Hotel and from there I went to Sri Lanka. I immediately got a very good position at the food and beverage and that's how I started my career. “Is'nt life in Sri Lanka risky with all the terrorists around?” I always think about it and that has been with me all my life.I was born in Kenya and grew up in Uganda and in 1972 Idi Amin came and kicked us out the country and at that point of time my family moved back to Sri Lanka.In 1983 the riots started with the LTTE and the Sinalese government and now it's really sad all over the world the word terrorist has become emboded within our culture and look what has happened in Iran,Iraq and India. I hate to say that life goes on but we grow to adapt with it.And as human beings we are really strong and together we can really make it happen. “What are your core values?” Let me tell you first of all there is a Mr Marriott and that's how it derives it's name and we are 81 years in the business. The core values as Mr Marriott said 'take care of the associates and the associates will take care of the customers and if you really think about it, it's absolutely true. As you know Marriott really relies on brand starndards and we have to comply with it. And by the year end it would be a Marriott Hotel. “The recession in IT industry has hit occupancy. How do you cope with the slump ?” That is the truth not only in India but in Asia and worldwide.And Hyderabad being an IT city we do feel the recession like the other hotels locally and the big cities because 65% of our travellers are from Indian companies of which 10% are from IT. When it comes to contingency
and recession the first thing people do is to cut down on travel. Right now we are looking at companies that host conventions and training programs for their staff so I think it will slowly pick up even if we are affected by the recession. “Is there attrition in the hospitality industry too?” We are aware of what's going on in the industry but we also keep in mind that we have to be flexible knowing that we are going through a recession so we try and as much we can for both management and staff.We encourage our staff to make use of free time wisely. “Do you like Hyderabad and it's people?” When I said' I have an assignment in Hyderabad' a lot of people abroad asked me "where is Hyderabad". People are familiar with Mumbai but believe me Hyderabad is a happening city with all the lovely restaurants, swanky malls and lovely landscapes.I find a lot more foreign cars in Hyderabad than any other city in India.And every family in India has someone abroad and this is interconnection makes them hep and they are very much in tune with what's going on with the music scene and the expat community. Culturally, Hyderabad is definitely on the international radar.
Yes, of course. Hyderabad has a lot to offer just like Kerala and Rajasthan. It has a culture, history and flavor of its own. There are lot of fantastic religious, educational and heritage places around here to be explored here. Just like the Hussainsagar Lake which is a man made and there a story about it. People identify themselves and say it's our lake. Hyderabad is a growing city with a lot of values that a traveler would be curious to know. I think Hyderabad will be the next Mumbai. “Your job is really competitive? How do you destress?” I think at it from both sides. I really have a passion for what I do so I really enjoy what I do. I like meeting a lot of new people in Hyderabad and that has made it a little stress free. We all have goals, plans and that kind of stuff. I try to work out everyday. Reading is a great passion of mine and I live in the hotel and I have access to the best gyms of which I take advantage. I love to travel and look around on off days and just discover the city. My secret mantra I tell myself and my staff is that today is going to be a great day and that makes me comfortable with myself.
“Did you do any sightseeing in Hyderabad?” I've been very lucky to explore the city on my off days. I've been to the Ramoji Film City and the Charminar pearl and bangle market. One thing is you need to know strategically what's around you when you're are trying to sell the hotel. The Nizam's jewellery collection and the Salar Jung Museum are really fantastic.We are happy that the tourism department of the Andhra Pradesh is also projecting Hyderabad as a tourist destination and that

Some amateur photographers of Hyderabad formed the Hyderabad Photography Club (HPC) Here is an article on the club.
A humble step The HPC came into existence when Kishore Nagarigari, the administrator of the group, started it in 2006. While there were groups dedicated to the city of Hyderabad on flickr, a city-specific group that focussed on it was lacking. Since its inception, the HPC has gone from strength to strength and now boasts of more than 10000 images in the group's 'pool' contributed by 1000-plus members. These numbers continue to grow.

How it grew

The Internet has changed the way people meet by eliminating the geographical barriers that separate them. It has made it very easy for the like-minded to get together and share views and opinion. The HPC is a great example of this phenomenon. It is essentially a free-for-all online community of photography enthusiasts on the popular picture sharing website, flickr.
What are they doing? The group members come from a variety of backgrounds including software engineers, senior management executives, businessmen and photography students. It is this mix of thoughts and opinions that makes the group a vibrant set up. The feature that characterises HPC is the photo-walks. 2008's photo-walks included, among several others, visits to places such as the Qutub Shahi Tombs, Golconda Fort, Nehru Zoological Park, the Mrugavani Deer Park and ICRISAT. The last two were organised in association with the Birdwatchers Society of Andhra Pradesh (BSAP). They also prove to be a platform for sharing hands-on knowledge about the finer aspects of photography. The group has organised visits to places such as Hampi, Ooty and the Kanha National Park. Last year, the group successfully organised a workshop on the technical aspects of photography and post-processing of images. This workshop was organised and conducted by the members of the club. Prior to this, the group attended training session conducted by ace photographer Atul Kasbekar, which was
sponsored by Canon, a camera manufacturer.
Would you like to join? The online avatar of the club is no less vibrant as it allows the people who reside in other parts of the world to participate in the groups activities. Discussions here cover the smallest to the most complex aspects of photography. The group conducts monthly contests on various themes that encourage the members to post photographs taken specifically for the contest. At the end of the month, three winners are decided based on voting. The contests and voting are open for all the members of the group.
The strength of a community lies in the participation of its members. Nowhere is this more important than on the Internet where life cycles of websites can be counted in terms of number of weeks, if not days. Therefore, the group plans to build on the start it has achieved and take the effort forward. The road ahead is already being set. Fateh Maidan the field of victory
I
t is interesting to note that the Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb had stationed his horses at this very ground, which he later christened Fateh Maidan (Field of victory). It was from here that he launched his military campaign on the powerful medieval kingdom of Golconda, which was longdrawn but eventually successful. As time passed, it became the scene for less martial pursuits, but mainly sporting in nature. It even hosted the first-ever cricket event.So did it's name change with the passage of time from the locally known Fateh Maidan to the Lal Bahadur Stadium. Truly if parallels can be drawn from this page of history, the Indian Cricket League (ICL) mounted its own brand of assault on the well

entrenched establishment of world cricket. Little surprise then that organisers of any sporting extravaganza had retraced their steps to this historic city, People-friendly pricing of tickets had brought in sizeable crowds, with passionate cricket fans from the city's fairly large corporate community catching the action live at the centrally located Lal. Bahadur Stadium. But that's all history and only lingers in memory. We got in touch with veterans who shared some nostalgia about this historic ground in a tete-a-tete.
Back in the good old days the Fateh Maidan was synonymous with vim, vigour and excitement and Hyderabad was seen as a mirror of popular public perception. Most of the matches played on this ground were well attended and talked about much.
How is your transition from a former police officer to a secretary of the Fateh Maidan Club? This transition from government to civil life is like moving from north pole to south pole nothing else. Over here we are bound by the rules of the committee and have to abide by it to deliver the goods according to the bye laws and not in the puview of the government rules. As secretary how do you spend a day at the club? As an administrative head I have a very busy schedule. This includes monitoring the finance section, looking into the grievances of the members, the staff, management, correspondence with SAAP, court cases and several things. Have you faced a crisis anytime at the club?

Yes, when the staff went on strike for just an hour which was quickly resolved by the committee members. Being a club we have to deal with all kinds of people right from politicians to celebrities and I have to be tough sometimes to handle such situations. Being an ex-police officer do you enforce discipline in the club? No, I only monitor all situatiions in an amicable manner. People come to enjoy and it's difficult to enforce any military rules where recreation and sports attract people to the club.Of course, the decency and decorum of the management, members and staff will certainly improve the standards of the club if they are followed in true spirit. I wish it could happen. Tell me something about the club's kitchen? We have four kitchen's in our club.A vegetarian kitchen being managed by the Taj Mahal group since 9 years, a nonvegetarian kitchen, a chinese kitchen and the latest moghlai kitchen. Interestingly, the sales of all the kitchen is getting better every day. Quality and quality is the main aspect in our kitchen and it is no wonder that our Zafrani Biryani, Haleem ,sweets and other items are most sought after.

How did you associate yourself with Fateh Maidan Club? Since a long time I am associated with cricket and Fateh Maidan had been earlier the centre for the Hyderabad Cricketing Association which used to have it's office at the stadium later on to Gymkhana and now to Uppal.I was instrumental in suggesting a bigger place so as to have an identity for ourselves and that is how we got the Rajiv Gandhi stadium which is one of the famous stadiums now. Can you recall memories with some famous cricketers? I have associated with all the famous names such as ML Jaisimha, Sunil Gavaskar, Pataudi, Kapil Dev, Azharuddin and the list goes on---.I was manager of the South Indian teams while I was in Australia, New Zealand and England.Similarly with Jaisimha as Manager of the Hyderabad Blues Team travelling abroad with a lot of youngsters who would play for our country. It was a rousing team that toured all over the world.

How do you define Fateh Maidan? Fateh means victory and that's how it is known.The Nizam later gave this ground to the Deccan Blues Cricket Club which ultimately was handed over to the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP)because the Deccan Blues did not have enough funds to have a stadium of their own. Right now SAAP is managing the show. Is there any exciting event that Fateh Maidan will host now? As you know presently cricket has moved out from here and only IPL may have a tie up with us for future events.All the excitement is now at the Uppal stadium and Fateh Maidan has become a lonely child in need of a mother and father. How can one become a member of this club? The government had started this club in 1963. Earlier in 1962 the sports council established this club with 200 members.Presently there are about 4,700 members . Only the children of the existing members and sportsmen are entitled to become members of the club. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate new members.It is a non-profitable club run on a no loss no gain. Apart from sports does the Fateh Maidan Club host other events too? Of course, we have regular family get togethers consisting of tombola being the most popular one in the city with a lot of costly prizes. Most public holidays and festivals are also celebrated with pomp and gaiety. Sometimes we also host billiards tournaments. Any celebrities or vips amongst your members? Almost all the top politicians of the state have been members including our chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP Leader N Chandrababu Naidu.Most film stars would prefer to play a benefit match on our grounds. Can you revive the glory of the once famous Fateh Maidan? It is difficult to revive the glory since cricket has moved from here however we are trying to have our own ground and new club house in future. From where do you get funds to run the club? Only through the members subscriptions we have now about Rs.4 crore with which we wish to have a new club. -Nand Kumar KV

s Big B playing his real life role on the screen? According to sources, the answer is 'yes". Khushan Nandi, son of Preetish Nandi of Preetish Nandi communications has planned a film with Big B. As soon as the subject heard, Amitab accepted to do the film. "It has been prepared for Amitab only" says Khushan. It is said that the interesting, crucial incidents from Big B life have been incorporated in the subject. But, it is not been known whether Amitab love affairs have been included or not. However, Preetish also is happy with the project. They are working together after some misunderstandings appeared after the film Kante, they did together in 2002.

One must appreciate the efforts of the AP Tourism Development Corporation for showcasing the 250 year old heritage structure Taramati Baradari. Noted theatre personality Mohammed Ali Baig from The Qadir Ali Baig Foundation recently presented a grand theatre spectacle Taramati The Legend of an Artist. Retracing the legendary love story of poet the play portrays prince Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shal (enacted by Arif Zakaria) and singer dancer Taramati (Madhu) with the queen mother Hayat Bakshi Begum (Rashmi Seth) and Premavati (Alekhya). This epic production included song and dance sequences, period costumes, unique sets, five specially erected stages, 150 lights, fakirs blended with the compositions of Karthik Ilayaraja and sets and lights by M S Sathyu. ecently Ista hosted a musical concert titled Jazz2Rock concerto by Barbara Jungfer and Holger Jetter, two German musicians at Istana banquet hall. Barbara Jungfer and Holger Jetter conceptualized their India tour last year in Munich and started to work on compositions right away. Two Indian Jazz musicians Keith Peters and Jeoraj George were invited to explore the Indian jazz scene together. The quartet performed original tunes and improvised pieces, that were specially for their India tour. It's great to note that Barbara was the first female jazz guitar player performing in India.This high energy performance excited the novice and the experienced jazz. listener alike. The rich and rocky sound made this show a great listening experience for the young and old. One must appreciate ABN Amro and Black Dog for organizing such musical evening for the lovers of music.

Bonsai tree looks wonderful. Really, one can get astonished at this miniature thing. Many people felt the same in a Bonsai exhibition held on 6th February at Kamma Sangham hall at Ameerpet, Hyderabad. Different types of miniature trees were exhibited. Interestingly it was inaugurated by Ganapathy Sacthidananda swamiji who is fond of Bonsai. The swamiji lauded the efforts of the Friends Bonsai Society for organizing it which was well received by lovers of Bonsai.
Young Indians summit 2009 The Young Indians vision is to become a voice of young Indians globally. It endorses proactive youth involvement towards India of tomorrow. The summit reaffirmed the enthusiasm of India's vast young population and it's appetite to make positive action based choices.

t is heartening to note that the American consulate in Hyderabad have started issuing visas since the end of February. Earlier people from Andhra Pradesh had to rush to the consulate in Chennai for a US visa.
Thanks to our Chief Minister Dr Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy whose initiative prompted the former US president George Bush to set up consulate in Hyderabad for the convenience of visa seekers from Andhra Pradesh. The Consulate General Cornelis M Keur is very active and keen to mingle with the citizens to know more about the jargon and culture of the locals. He is busy advising students about their safety in US after some unfortunate incidents had grabbed the headlines recently. The Consulate General will also give some useful tips. Good efforts, Mr Cornelis!

t has never been like this in the past, The forthcoming elections has star value and glamour as top stars have decided to get involved in politics. Cashing in on the masses adulation for stars the political parties want to use star power to attract voters to the ballot box in their favor. Especially road shows are conducted to attract the masses. P.R.P. supremo Chiranjeevi had road shows in three regions while T.D.P. leader Balakrishna also had a few road shows. Both attracted the masses and received a tremendous response. And now it's the turn of Jr NTR. T.D.P leaders have at last succeeded to drag NTR to campaign for them from March on wards from Srikakulam. Interestingly, every one is eager to see his campaign because, he has inherited the oratory skills of his grand father NTR who was a legendary figure in Telugu film industry.

It was indeed a sense of pride for every Hyderabadi as Sania was humble to share her first grand slam trophy with Mahesh Bhupathi and become the first all Indian pair to win mixed doubles grand slam title. Every Indian specially Hyderabadi's had their eyes fixed on the tube and did not blink an eye as they didn't want to miss a moment of this historic match.
