Zooming in

A new year is unfolding-like a blossom with petals curled lightly concealing the beauty within.

JANUARY 2009

Ah, yes. The Year of the Rat is an ongoing Tradition of New Year Greetings, Wishes and Resolutions. It's a tradition that invokes everything from delight to dhamaka, has a success rate akin to winning the lottery and has the power to launch feelings of guilt, failure, and dark humor in a flash. And yet every year, millions of people are drawn to the ritualistic hope that wishing, greeting and praying has a positive effect on everybody and that by extending these, one can achieve magical outcome.

Ushering in the New Year January 1 is right around the corner . . . Why not use the New Year, that customary time of 'rebirth and renewal', as an opportunity to get 'umber' organized? As the big day approaches, adopt the New Year custom of cleaning the entire house before the festivities begin. Anup Reddy, who is pursuing his MS in the US who has come home, has a take on New Year greetings. He feels, "Apart from spending quality time with near and dear ones, the starting point to being successful at anything in life, including resolutions is your expectations. Festivities begin with Christmas as we spring-clean our homes and minds. While in Hyderabad, during the month long festive period, there are scores of families that would rush to Dadu's or Almond House or Pulla Reddy to buy gift hampers of dry fruits or a delectable array of sweets themselves. Even the corporates would buy them to distribute among their staff. Chandra Shekhar, a web architect who lives in Dehradun feels that the best way to greet our elders and relatives on New Year is go to temples, and other places of worship in the hope that this year will be different from the year before. Therefore, he calls his near and dear ones and gifts away season's gift hamper, apart from other goodies and gifts. How about throwing open the windows, clearing the cobwebs out of house and head before and after the frenetic holiday season, and moving forward into the New Year with an energetic and positive attitude.

First Harvest

that the New Year augurs well for them and their loved ones. Just because things haven't worked out well in the past with respect to your resolutions is no reason to assume they never will. And, they consider New Year's Resolutions as a wonderful mechanism for creating new and exciting outcomes. Linda De Souza conveys her heartfelt New Year wishes to Kiran Hari in by sending specially chosen red roses which number 62 and specially designed New Year cake. She has been doing it for the past 6 years now and each year, she has a unique way of expressing her feelings. She never sends the same old greetings; instead she designs and sends greetings that convey her heartfelt wishes and love. Way to go! Some of us choose to approach this annual ritual with a degree of triviality and playfulness. It is this type of revelers who start their New Year celebrations much ahead of the day. They start with Christmas and prior to it they start celebrations sans religion, caste or credo. To get into the New Year groove, they express their immense love to show how much they care by exchanging wines, cakes and other goodies, and, for those who really do long for a triumphant breakthrough in some area of life, here are some suggestions on how to give your resolutions a fighting chance this year. And that's what makes the month long New Year's Resolutions so exciting for most of us. Regardless of what we say we want, or how badly we want it, or how sincere or determined we are, the "reality" for each of us is that we expect to do the same things we've always done, with the hopeful chance of some

Are resolutions, prayers and wishes linked together? excitement and improvement. The trick to busting out of this Resolutions cycle is to find a way to think outside expectations, because if you don't do that, no amount of strategizing or goal-setting is going to make much difference. It isn't an overnight process, but there are some steps you can take that can get you headed in the right direction.

Drifting This is a moment of transition. The year 2008 has slipped away and the New Year 2009 has come in. What does this moment mean to us? Does it mean more than changing the calendar on the wall? In the end, New Year's resolutions will continue to be a challenge for many of us. Along the way, you become whatever your choices are. If you choose mediocrity and safety, you become mediocre and safe. You can either choose to be defined by your expectations, or you can choose to be defined by your inspirations. When you choose the inspiring path, what you end up with and how long it takes to get it, doesn't matter. Isn't it time to stop having your life be about the obsessive pursuit of "success" and start having it be about discovery and inspiration?- LLLasya

Pongal wishes are exchanged between family and friends, and there are celebrations within the family. As one stand on the threshold of the harvest season, everyone exchange Pongal wishes, hoping that it brings the harbinger of good luck, good fortune and good cheer. People wish each other good times and happiness, peace and prosperity and a whole lot more in life. People wish each other with words like "Pongalo Pongal" and "Pongum Mangalam Engum Thanguga" in Tamil. Tamils wish each other to start the New Year with mutual respect, mutual understanding, mutual trust and sincere cooperation. Are resolutions, prayers and wishes linked together? The annual ritual can invigorate our lives with inspiring challenges and wonderful experiences to look forward to when family and friends come together to welcome the New Year. While some others make it to their ancestral home wherever it may be and have family functions on a massive scale. When Sankranti comes, the Andhrawalas visit temples of worship and offer prayers hoping

Glimpses Coming back to his first love

F

irst Love has been connotations But in Siddarth's case what does it mean?Alright, now tell me where is Siddharth? Well… he is back with a Telugu movie, Koncham Istam…Koncham Kastam. With two super hits Nuvvu Vastanante Nevaddantana and Bommarillu he's going great guns in Telugu film industry as well as in audience. But, with two flops (Chukkallo Chandrudu and Aata) he vanished from Telugu industry. Now he is acting in 'Koncham ….' opposite Tamanna which will hit the theatres on Sankranthi. Having directorial expertise, Siddharth shows an interest in other things rather than acting. He contributed a script to the film Chukkallo Chandrudu which upset him a lot. At last wisdom dawned on him and seems to concentrate only on his acting career.

Asin hovering on cloud 9

H

eroine Asin is a very pretty and a talented actress who has until now to her credit only two films in Telugu Amma Nanna Vo Tamila Ammayi and Gharshana. Unfortunately, luck did not favor her as she wasn't received well in the Telugu film industry. Surprisingly, she stepped into Bollywood and acted in Amir Khan's Ghajini. Director Vipul Shah also roped her in his forthcoming film London Dreams opposite Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan, even before her maiden Bollywood film was released. Asin praises Amir and Vipul and has now a soft corner for both of them.. Good show Asin…Looks like you have the perfect public relations skills to easily settle in Bollywood.

Hospitality

The

divine visitor

12

JANUARY 2009

“E

Atithi Devo Bhava very country and region has its own customs and traditions in welcoming and extending hospitality to its guests.

In the Indian context ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ is a Sanskrit phrase which means "A guest is divine" we all agree. But we just want to treat them like divine if they give us a teeny-weeny notice, without gate-crashing, that's all! One gets a glimpse of the customs and rituals in India as soon as one is welcomed in traditional Indian style. This is what is expressed in welcoming a guest with a garland and putting vermilion on the forehead of the guest. There are a number of such customs that are part of Indian society.

Hello! Please come in Whether in India or abroad inviting guests for extended stays is a normal part of the social calendar. While you may not live on a sprawling estate or employ a large staff, the art of welcoming guests is still alive and well. The secret to making guests feel at home lies in a combination of advance planning and thoughtful attention to details. As soon as you've extended the invitation -- be it a friendly e-mail or phone call, or an engraved invitation to go with a formal event such as a wedding -Start taking stock and making lists. Map out practical matters such as sleeping arrangements: guest room(s), a sofa bed in the den, or sleeping bags on the floor (a popular option with kids, especially en masse).

Are you comfortable? The key is not to go overboard with fuss and effort - which often makes people more uncomfortable, not less - but to make them feel relaxed and special. With some thought and planning, you can spend more time concentrating on the whole reason you suggested your home, rather than a hotel, in the first place.

First of all how does one define a Guest? Well, it is one who is a recipient of hospitality at the home or table of another or a person who spends some time at another person's home in some social activity, as a visit, dinner, or party. Depending on who's coming to stay, having house guests over can either be a really welcome occasion, or one that calls for lowering the shades so no one thinks your home!

Different kinds of guests have specific needs; older people might prefer a peaceful, low-key atmosphere or a main-floor bedroom that precludes climbing stairs, or have special dietary needs, while parents with kids will have very different preferences than your old college roommate.

Are you hungry? Plan out meals and menus in advance, perhaps including a barbecue in summer or a night on the town if you're in a big city. Especially for a large group, leaving breakfast and lunch as casual affairs and concentrating on dinner together is relaxing for both host and guest.

That's Your Room if you have a separate guest room (or a spare room that can be turned into one), emulate a fine hotel. The room should contain a bureau with at least a couple of empty drawers, and clear closet space equipped with extra hangers. Naturally, the room should be freshly cleaned and the linens spotless; put out extra pillows and a choice of light or warm blankets, on the bed or in the closet. Outfit the nightstand with a good reading lamp and a selection of books and magazines and an alarm clock. "It's essential if the visit is for a formal occasion like a wedding, but it's also nice for casual visitors too, who might like to have a snooze before supper," says Amy. Thoughtful extras might include a carafe of fresh water and a glass (refilled each night), bedside phone, radio or TV and TV Guide and a vase of fresh or dried flowers.

Is everything alright? If you don't have a guest room, anything that gives your guests a sense of their own space is essential. If home is a sofa bed for the next few nights, place a basket or attractive box nearby to house your guest's things. If possible, make up the sofa bed beforehand, so that all that's needed at bedtime is to pull it out and add pillows. A folding screen, bookcase or side table can define a private space for overnight bags, shopping purchases or other belongings. It's also important to arrange an itinerary of activities and things to do during the visit. You needn't plan every minute, but before the visit, ask what your guests would like to do and have a range of options at the ready. If they're here for a formal event like a wedding, they might see your home as a quiet refuge from the madding crowd; in that case, a good supply of books, CDs and perhaps some board games may be all you need. Out-of-town visitors might enjoy sight-seeing, shopping or local attractions (make all necessary reservations well in advance, including prepayment arrangements if appropriate). But if the main attraction is simply spending time with you, build in plenty of downtime for chatting, as well as a night out or an activity you all enjoy.

With everyone so busy today, and friends and family spread out all over the country, inviting people to visit lets you connect with each other again," says Amy. "It's a wonderful way to slow down and take back ownership of your life for a few days.

good light in your guest room. But more importantly, have a good reading light that can be turned on and off without getting out of bed. A night light near the door and one in the guest's bath will be helpful and appreciated too.

Fresh-as a 'Daisy' linens

If your guest is staying more than just overnight, if you can provide a TV, you get bonus points! A computer with internet access would be a real luxury!

It's crucial that you provide crisp, clean, and coordinated linens for your overnight guests. They'll feel especially welcome and it's an easy thing to do. Don't pull out your family leftovers if you don't have to. You don't have to invest in the finest luxury linens to make someone feel special. Most discount specialty stores have large sections of discontinued styles of designer sheet sets and lovely imported towels. You can really get a beautiful look at a small price. Be sure to have an extra blanket tucked away in a closet should your guests need more warmth.

Have a place to relax You may not want to be entertaining your guest all the time they're with you, and it's important that they feel they have someplace to get away for a little private relaxing time. A comfortable chair and ottoman are just the answer. Even a small slipper chair and stool will do the trick, and your guest will have a quiet place to be on their own.

Get rid of as much clutter as you can If you use your spare room for other things when you're alone, you may have some work to do when you're expecting guests. What to you might be decorating, may be "stuff in the way" for your visitor. Have a bare tabletop, empty drawer, and closet space available for your guest to put things away. They'll feel more at home and not be concerned about having their things in your way.

A reading light is essential! Almost everyone I know likes to read for a while before going to sleep. Be sure to have

Share your favorite novel A vacation just begs for a good book! If you've just finished a wonderful one, why not share it with your guest? You'll have something fun to talk about. Any book of local attractions is nice to have, too. They'll learn about your area and might find something to do or see. If you know your guest's special interests, how about finding a copy of one or two magazines for them to enjoy or a book of crossword puzzles or other word games?

Finishing Touches Who doesn't love fresh flowers? With so many varieties available at the local grocery store, there's really no excuse for not having them to dress up your guest room. A carafe of water and glass, a clock radio, a bottle of lotion-what do you have by your bed? Whatever you can provide for your guest will make them feel more at home and most welcome. You'll find that if you have everything in order for your guest's arrival and everything is ready in the special place you've made for them, the visit will be a happy one for both of you. You'll feel like a wonderful host and their visit will be memorable.

Please Come Again While bidding goodbye the host must feel a void in their heart like 'I will miss you' and the guest reciprocate by 'thanking for the hospitality'. -Lasya JANUARY 2009

Slumber

Your private sleeping chamber Your life seems hectic and out of control, why not create a private retreat where you can go to unwind, read, and take sanctuary from outside intrusions? Without adding on to your house, you'll be able to find a special spot that is yours alone. You'll be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to escape.

D

ecorating a bedroom is a wonderful way to create a personal expression of your tastes, likes, dislikes and moods.

BE INNOVATIVE TO CREATE ILLUSION OF MORE SPACE

Use soft lights If the room is too dark, it will seem closed-in and small. Light and brightly colored walls are more reflective than darker walls. The lighter the color, the more open the space appears. This does not mean you have to live with white walls. There are a wide range of light colored paints available. Once you've chosen the wall color, choose the trim and molding colors. Paint your trim and molding in either the same hue as the walls, or a lighter color. Lighter objects appear closer while darker or shadowed objects appear further away.

14

JANUARY 2009

A bedroom should be a personal getaway, a sanctuary, which expresses your favorite colors, feelings, and collections. Learn the main things to remember when decorating your bedroom You'll spend lots of time in your bedroom and it should be a wonderful, relaxing room.

When the trim and molding are a lighter color, the wall appears further back, thus making the room appear bigger. Whatever the wall color, paint the ceiling white to maximize brightness. By choosing furniture that has a light color; it will have the same effect as the light colors of the walls. To further lighten the room, extend the curtain rods beyond the window frames; this allows in more light and draws the eye outward. Another trick is to have the curtains or blinds blend into the wall color. Blending items into a room can also add size to the area being decorated.

No clutter

movement, the larger the room will feel.

A good rule of thumb when decorating a small bedroom is, the more floor space you see, the larger your room will look. Clutter is bad, especially in modest spaces.

Use dark color for floors

Keep items off the floor. You may want to take care to design in sufficient storage space so you can properly put items away, since clutter will make even a big bedroom seem tiny. Create some drawers or use baskets to utilize wasted space under a bed. Put high shelves on the wall(s) so that items can be stored out of the way without taking up floor space. Put the bed along one wall instead of in the middle of the room. By leaving more unbroken space, you will create more freedom of movement. Avoiding clutter involves more than keeping clothes put away, dresser tops clear, and shelves/bedside tables neat. Be sure to consider furniture and floor space. Does the room really need that extra lamp or chair? Could the bed itself be a size smaller? Does the bed require quite so many pillows or stuffed animals? The more bed-space open to the eye and floor space open for physical

Floor space can appear crowded just by using dark colors, multiple scatter rugs, or lining shoes along the baseboard. A bare wood or tile floor creates an illusion of greater space as does keeping that floor space swept clean. Carpeting, too, must be frequently vacuumed and free of visible dirt. Also, lighter color carpeting makes a room appear larger than the same space carpeted in dark colors.

Reflect your creativity Finally, make the bedroom look larger by expanding the walls. Not literally. Wall mirrors give the illusion of creating more space in a small room. You are able to increase the illusion if you have the mirror capture the light from a window opening or a door opening into a hallway. New mirrors are pricey, so cruise flea markets and garage sales for bargains. Even mirrors with surface imperfections can give your room a great atmosphere. To wind up let's quote William Shakespeare's famous words 'O gentle sleep, nature's soft nurse'.

Flying Colors

The Annual Kite Festival is organized at Shilparamam and some other parts of the City with the patronage of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, other private sponsors and the corporate world

A

kite is a flying tethered man-made object. The necessary lift that makes the kite fly is generated when airflow over and under the kite creates low pressure above the kite and high pressure below it. In addition to the lift, this deflection generates horizontal drag along the direction of the wind. This drag is opposed with the tension of the one or more lines held by the operator of the kite. "The history of kite flying also encompasses Hyderabad. The people of Hyderabad flew kites from the times of the Nizams. The kite is called a Patang and the string with which it is flown is called 'Dor'. Kite flying or Patang Baazi is a cultural sport in most parts of India. Kite flying is mostly done on the Basant Panchami, Raksha Bandhan and Makar Sankranti. In Delhi kites are flown on Independence Day. However, Kites can be flown any time throughout the year. It is a fun sport for all times. Some say the history of Kites dates back to the days of Mahabharat. Kites were not only used in receiving messages but also measuring distances in war times. The first signs of Sankranti are the kites in the blue sky. As all the festival draws near, sky turns into one big Warfield as thousands of kites take to the sky to show whose kite flies high and how 'neighborhood rivalries' challenge enthusiasts vie for supremacy in the skies.

16

JANUARY 2009

The festival brings in hundreds of kites of all designs, themes and patterns. That's Sankranti for you, Hyderabadi style. "It's not about flying kites, but more about bringing them down," says Kiran Hari, a networking professional. The thirteen year-old Shashank says, "Last year I flew kites for the first time. All my kites became affa (were downed by other kites) within the first few hours itself. Shashank says, "I'm excited about taking on my neighborhood bhaiyyas." For most youngsters it's the showdown between the kites that is the highlight of this three-day harvest festival. Shankar Iyer feels, "In our place it's like one apartment block versus another. But when some kite from another area comes into our area, we all fight him unitedly." Together we try to force him into a position where our other friends can cut his kite down. But once the outside kite is downed, it's back to internal rivalry between our locality guys," says Qutubuddin, a Muslim, pursuing physiotherapy shows to prove that there are no barriers of religion, caste or creed. Flying is an art and involves a lot of strategy and skill. Lot of thinking goes into this. From choosing the kite to selecting the 'maanja', every detail is taken care of. But what's the mantra to get an upper hand in this game, where it's all about cutting the opponent's kite? "Maanja is the deciding factor," believes Bhanu Kiran, another student. In fact they can be dangerous, he says, as they are coated with soda-glass powder. His classmate Ravi Kumar counters saying kites are more important. The smaller the better, he says. But ask him if he'll go with any maanja and he tells, "Certainly not any maanja. Only wire maanja from Charminar side will do." Sanjay, Inter First Year student, Sri Chaitanya believes he has science on his side as he says, "Even with the best maanja, you can't win if you don't have a good kite. It's got to do with the Physics. Harshal, an engineering first year student from Calicut feels that If the kite's heavy, it will have more balance in the air and the thread and maanja will stand stiff due to the tension created in the thread, like a rod. And this helps in cutting the other kite's thread." For Amit, Ashok, Ajay, it's simply about flying as many kites as possible. They spend as much as 3000 bucks on kites every year. But the fun doesn't end with the flying. The real fun is in the whole ambience that's created as friends come together for

flying kites. "We have something like a DJ while flying kites. One guy just sits on it and just plays some nice song numbers. There are always about ten to twelve friends around. We arrange all the sound gear on the terrace. We have great fun - dance, music and flying." says Jagan. And of course, there's the food. "Don't forget it's a harvest festival. The delicious garelu, burelu, bobbatlu, sunnundalu, murukulu, pulihaara - these are what make Sankranti special," says Vivek, a Science student‌ And after three days of flying, Vivek cuts the thread and let's go of his kite to symbolically let go of all that happened in the past year, both good and bad. Kite fighting, which involves trying to cut the string of each other's kites, is the most interesting aspect of kite flying. It is called Patang Baazi in Hindi. The Indian fighter kites are of

Tips for safe surfing‌. 1. Use gloves to your hands to avoid wounds to the fingers 2. Wear cap on your head to avoid sun burn 3. Choose good quality of twine for your kite 4. On the terrace do not move in crowds while surfing 5. Always be careful accidents while surfing

medium size normally from 1 foot to 4 feet in across, made of special thin paper. The kite is flown with specially made thread called Dor which is the most important thing in kite flying and many precautions are taken to prepare it. The thin cotton thread Dor is locally prepared in Haryana as well as purchased from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jaipur. Then a paste made of glue and finely powdered glass is thinly spread on the thread in a special way to make the 'Dor'. Additives like pigeon's droppings, egg and sea surf are added to make the 'Dor' more lethal. Sometimes a coating of wax is used on the string to make it slick and difficult to cut. During the Kite flying season a lot of money is spent on the kites and Dor. People use necks of bottles or tapes to cover their fingers as the sharp Dor can cut their fingers while flying kites. There is loud music in the air and people dance when they cut someone other's kite. Kite flying has contributed to the composite culture and harmony of India. It has also promoted national integration. Making a kite is an art and flying it is a fine art. Kite Makers inherited and learnt the art of making kites from their ancestors passed it on to their future generations.

8. Elders should keep an eye on children while they are surfing

Skin signals

A tattoo is a permanent marking made by inserting ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding 18

JANUARY 2009

Tattoos are like marriage: it's a lifelong commitment, it hurts like hell, and the color fades over time.

T

attoos can have additional negative associations for women. Although derogatory slang phrases such as "tramp stamp" are sometimes used to describe a tatoo on a girls back, it remains one of the most popular spots for a tattoo for females. The prevalence of women in the tattoo industry itself, along with larger numbers of women bearing tattoos, has changed negative perceptions. A study of adolescent girls showed a positive correlation between body-modification and negative feelings towards the body and self-esteem; however, it also illustrated a strong motive of body-modification as the search for "self and attempts to attain mastery and control over the body in an age of increasing alienation. HEY - LISTEN It is about time the cultural vampires in the mainstream media woke up to the fact that tattoos are not some passing fad. Admittedly tattoos have been getting a fair bit of press lately in part driven by high profile celebrities like Salman and Sanjay Dutt flashing their ink in public. Or shows such Miami Ink with their carefully chosen tattoo artists making the whole tattooing process look like some kind of modern alchemy much the same way that thousands of wannabes wanted to become DJ's in the late 1990's when the DJ was revered as some kind of shaman. Ravi, a physiotherapist sports tattoos. When asked whether girls like tattoos on guys, he replied "you get tattoos for YOU and for no one else. If you like it then just go ahead and do it. You don't want to live your life for someone else. So what if you get one and some people don't like it"? Do you really want to be around people who are that judgmental? Those who sport tattoos like Ravi don't. Personally if people can't see beyond who Ravi is on the outside, then I don't want them to get to know me anyway, they aren't worth my time. Bhanu Kiran, a final year student of MBBS says, "I can't speak for every hip girl; but personally I don't like them or body piercing. They add nothing and really detract from your skin. What I mean is when I look at a girl, I like the smooth look of their skin, and the tattoo

takes away the smoothness." IS IT PEER PRESSURE OR JUST BEING A COOL DUDE Believe or not the vast majority of people get tattoos not in some vain attempt to be part of the crowd or cool but because part of them recognizes the deeper significance of tattoos and need for something beyond the mundane. To the tired and cynical hack this hunger for meaning is completely lost on them. Possibly because they cannot see beyond the vacuous consumer driven culture they are trapped REBELLION- A SYNONYM FOR CHANGE AMONG YOUTH Today's generation is both the talking and taking generation. They exactly what they want and will go ahead to achieve that no matter what the odds are. Who cares what anyone thinks if you're of age and you like it, then that's all that matters at the end of the day. The point we are making here is that if a potential boyfriend or girlfriend doesn't like you b/c of a tattoo, then you don't need to be with that person anyway. A tattoo is something meaningful to you as an individual and should never have to be considered something that is "accepted". These days, shaadi ceremonies witness a lot of girls adorning glittering and shimmering tattoos. Sporting tattoos is really not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, when my friend went to get his first one I was as nervous as he was because we didn't know what to expect and everyone I spoke to. (They simply lied!) NO PAIN - NO GAIN Once he started it really wasn't that bad, he wouldn't even call it a scratching pain and it's definitely not like having a needle dragged and

dragged over the skin. And literally after the first few minutes it dulls down, whether that's your skin going numb or just getting used to it its really not that bad, I actually quite enjoyed watching it, its an interesting process (also takes your mind off what's actually happening in a weird way. Also if you have a friendly tattooist it helps talking to them... you don't even notice they're doing it after a while. IT'S JUST A PASSING FAD If you get one, just take a sugary drink with you like Iron Brew or something... some people feel dizzy afterwards and that helps. Getting tattoos used to be a form of rebellion. In many ways it still is a rebellion for people who feel as though they are constantly bombarded with advertisements for designer labels and sucked into believing they need tattooing. Well guess what? We have had consumerist culture shoved in our faces since the 1940's and it still hasn't made us any happier as human beings.

Posture

When teaching good posture I like to keep it simple. We find most success with these six steps three “doing” or active steps and three “checking” or relaxing steps. Remember the relaxing steps are equally as important as the active steps in order to achieve good balance ... so don't forget them. If you've ever tried to change your posture, you'll know how difficult it can be. That's because correcting poor posture involves not only learning a new skill - but also changing your habits. 20

You and I know the unfair side effects of poor posture. It affects every part of our lives. From work, relationships and health. Poor posture is unfairly seen as a sign of poor health, laziness and lack of self confidence - while perfect posture is seen as a symbol of health, beauty, self esteem and self confidence.

Stand Up Straight!

W

alking around with our head up may be a great way to cover up poor posture, but it is not an effective was to fix the underlying causes of poor posture. Not only does it take a lot of concentration and effort, It's like trying to bend a bent paperclip back into perfect shape. It's impossible! There is only way to improve posture. No matter how much so called posture "experts" push the old fashioned idea that you can simply create correct posture through changing your "habits" or walking around with a book on your head...The truth still remains. The only way to improve posture is to fix and reverse the underlying genetic and environmental causes... When teaching good posture I like to keep it simple. We find most success with these six steps - three "doing" or active steps and three "checking" or relaxing steps. Remember the relaxing steps are equally as important as the active steps in order to achieve good balance ... so don't forget them. If you've ever tried to change your posture, you'll know how difficult it can be. That's because correcting poor posture involves not only learning a new skill but also changing your habits. To improve your posture you first need to learn the skill of adopting good posture; then you can address the issue of turning that posture into a habit. Follow these posture tips to learn how. Learn to Correct Your Posture: Keep it Simple.

string. This will help to tuck your chin in without tightening the muscles at the front of your neck. It is important that the imaginary string attaches to the back of your head and not the top. Otherwise you will lift your chin up rather than tucking it in. 3. Contract your tummy slightly: Now think about your tummy muscles and contract them a tiny amount - about one tenth of a full contraction. Do not pull your tummy in fully. You won't be able to sustain it. We are just trying to activate your abdominal muscles.

How many times are we told as children the cause of our poor posture was simply laziness and that we simply need to “Stand up straight! pull our shoulders back and look straight ahead? If only it was that easy.

When teaching good posture I like to keep it simple. I find most success with these six steps - three "doing" or active steps and three "checking" or relaxing steps. Remember the relaxing steps are equally as important as the active steps in order to achieve good balance ... so don't forget them.

6. Relax your knees. Make sure they are not "locked" backwards into hyperextension. In Sitting, begin with your bottom as far back in the chair as it will go. Follow steps 1 5 above and then try to make sure your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are not higher than your hips (best at 90o). This will obviously vary according to your chair - but that's another story.

Changing Your Postural Habits Now that you have learned what to do, the next and more difficult step is to change your postural habits. Incorporating good posture into everyday tasks is the aim. Here are a number of strategies you might like to try: 1. Practice the steps for adopting good posture outlined above regularly. 2. Think of key words that have meaning to you and recite them as you practice. For example: "Sternum, String, Stomach, Relax Shoulder, Neck and Knees". Repeat the phrase to yourself as you practice your posture. 3. Place visual reminders in numerous places like on your computer screen, on the fridge, at the sink, in your desk drawer etc 4. Determine and implement a routine such as: Whenever the phone rings, I'll correct my posture; Whenever I turn the page, I'll correct my posture. 5. If you work at a computer, be sure to check the adjustment of the chair and workstation every day. 6. Don't remain seated for long periods particularly at the computer. Stand up, move around and stretch every 20 minutes or so. 7. Start practicing good posture in less physically complex tasks first - such as sitting and standing. Once you feel happy with your posture, practice during tasks that involve more complex movements, such as working in the kitchen. You see, a correct and straight spine is kept in its correct anatomical position by the muscles surrounding it. They maintain a straight spine like supporting lines on a suspension bridge maintain a straight road.

up through the imaginary string at the back of your head.

The Relaxing Steps

1. Lift your sternum: Focus on your breastbone (sternum). Lift it straight up towards the ceiling and hold it there. Make sure you are not pulling your shoulders back to achieve this movement. They will go back naturally when you lift your breastbone.

4. Relax or drop your shoulders - whilst keeping your breastbone up. For some people this can feel awkward at first. If you wriggle your shoulders back and forward a little, you may find it easier. It is very important not to actively pull your shoulders back and hold them there. Doing so can lead to problems.

2. Imagine a string is attached to the back (crown) of your head and lift up through the

5. Relax your neck. Make sure you are not straining to hold your chin tucked in but lifting

If any of these muscle are too weak or to strong your spinal column will be pulled out of line, leading to poor posture. These imbalances can be caused and exaggerated by genetic factors or by simple environmental factors such as repetitive physical activity like sitting, sport, work and even sleep. Focus on your posture, attitude, and facial expressions to succeed beyond your wildest expectations.

Hooked-Up

Friendship is a gift-pure and simple. Since it is a gift it cannot be imposed on someone. It needs to be offered by one person and accepted by another. The process may not be too easy. Before you consider some one a "friend", ask yourself, what do you really want from this person.

Hi! ive-in relationships maybe in the news these days thanks to recent movies and media explosion but, there are still many questions about it. Incited and driven by anything from movies to daily soaps, the younger generation, although in a population that is quite minor, has started leading a very liberal lifestyle.

L 22

JANUARY 2009

Breaking taboos They are still far from being accepted among the older generation, which continues to believe in the institution of marriage. Are people actually living-in? What about the societal and parental pressures and embarrassment? What if it doesn't workout? Well, reel life is no different from real life when it comes to stories like cohabitation without any commitment. Salaam Namaste is a classic example where Saif Ali Khan and Preity

Zinta actually cohabit. Live-in relationship lasts only as long as the needs are met.

Check this out Srinivas, a practicing lawyer attributes the increase in live-in relationships among the young couples to lack of patience and the inability to adjust to each other. The morality question about such arrangements brings about varied views. Cohabiting women are more likely than married women to suffer physical and sexual abuse.

their differences and even disputes, it gives them all the more reason to exercise their seemingly liberal and mature discretion for such rectification. With the amount of independence and privacy included in such a relationship, anyone would think it to be an ideal move. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. One needs to really dig into the pros and cons of living together to know what he or she is getting into. A lack of commitment in the real sense and a dangerous level of liberty loom over the relationship to topple it over anytime. And for those who prefer it as a prelude to the real act of tying the knot, the pros and cons of living together before marriage shape up as an even greater challenge, more so because of the social issues involved in it. As long as the strong roots of the age-old ethics hold ground, the institution of marriage will definitely outlast live-in relationships.

There is no dispute because there is no intrusion or disputes. The couples have the freedom to walk out of the relationship anytime they want if they feel it does not provide them the comfort and warmth of a healthy relationship anymore.

Office romance Among the professionals, the MNC work culture with long working hours provides the rationale for couples opting for living together. Deepthi Malhotra, who works in a call centre, feels that she is open to both live-in and marriage and that her parents have no objection to it. Those in relationships, by far, been the choicest victims of emotional somersaults, succumbing imminently to the gravitational pull of relationships. Archana, an MBA student says, a lack of pledge, obligation, commitment and assurance in the real sense is the culprit and a dangerous level of liberty looms large over the relationship to topple it over anytime Nobody can lead a solitary life out of personal choice. No matter what kind of relationship, man seems to be bound by someone in his life to draw a meaning to it. And when we talk about relationships, romance can't be far behind, can it? India is widely known as a country with strong moral values and traditional integrity. Perhaps, that's why bold exhibitions of romance go for a toss in such a typical society, least being something like

The love that we all want from a partner is not possible without both having the commitment to try to make it last. Preity was supposedly in a live-in relationship with Ness Wadia for sometime and Saif paired wih her in Salaam Namaste. Namita Shetty from Tollywood too had a live-in relationship.

live-in-relationships in India.

Is marriage still sacred? The union of a man and a woman is considered as one of the most sacred acts in this country. No wonder, living together before marriage is a sour dampener for the staunch ethic upholders. However, the new millennium has ushered in great changes even within the country that has forever been enshrouded in a blanket of rich culture and heritage. Driven by anything from movies to daily soaps, the younger generation, although in a population that is quite minor, has started leading a very freethinking lifestyle. In a bid to know their partners better, they denounce the age-old ethics and get down to some serious living together agreements. A simple, unbinding arrangement where you share resources can be something that lets the fire burn bright without letting marital rancor and regret act as a dampener.

Legal Hang-ups

The hyphenated existence (live-in), not completely conjoined is what it's about, the tenuousness as well as the tenacity to stick it out that comes from your own conviction, not convention. No matter that the liaison does not have legal validity. No one coerces you; you do it because you love each other.

Dramatist

All the world's a stage and we are all mere players

Obsessed with Theatre 24

JANUARY 2009

A dramatist, art lover, marketing wizard, a television and a film actor and socialite- he's still has the jumping beans in him that would humble the Gen X as they look to him as a mentor to start a career in anything that is synonymous with dramatics. Shankar Melkote shares his experience in this candid chat with Hyderabad Josh

First stint in theatre

I

've been doing amateur English theatre ever since Nizam College. The first play that I did was under the direction of Mehroo Jussawala in Nizam College, which was a college play. I also participated in two successive versions of the inter-university youth festival, which was held at the Talkatora Gardens in New Delhi. At that time I was in the Osmania University one-act play team. The first year John Israel who is very well known as a 'voice' played the lead. The second year I had the privilege of playing the lead in the one act play. We also had the privilege of performing in the presence of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad who was then the education minister of India. So, that is where I started doing theatre. And I'm very happy to say that now this was 1957-58. So I'm very happy to say almost 50 years down the line I still continue to have an interest in theatre though in the recent years I've been doing what you call theatre related activity which is dramatized readings under the aegis of the Little Theater of Hyderabad which I helped start some 12 years ago.

What kind of theatre related activity? We have been reading essentially short stories, excerpts from novels, biography, poetry and of course play scripts for invited audiences in the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad as well as in Bangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. I hit upon the idea of dramatized readings because at one point of time that was roughly twelve years ago formal proscenium theatre in the English language in the twin cities had gone into a limbo for a variety of reasons. There was no activity and those of us who were involved with Dramatic Circle Hyderabad which was the premier amateur theatre company in the twin cities felt a loss because the adrenaline rush that you get when you perform before a live audience is something quite different from, for instance when you do a television serial or a feature film. So I thought about this and around that time we had moved into the suburb of Sainikpuri. There were logistic difficulties and even if there was theatre activity, attending rehearsals and you know going to performances was not possible. So I decided to dramatize readings which are far easier which require maybe 1 or 2 rehearsals which also gave us an opportunity not only to read from play scripts but also from short fiction, which is short stories, excerpts from novels biography, poetry etc and to address issues that were staring us in the face. Because in theatre what we had done primarily was British drawing room comedies and farces and you know as one grew older one felt very disappointed because theatre is to reflect life, theatre is to address issues, theatre is an instrument of social change. This medium of

dramatized readings gave me that opportunity to source a wider variety of literature and I'm very glad we did that. We started by reading in people's homes on their lawns, to audiences of as little as 15-20 people at the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai and we had an audience of 550 at the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bangalore. We have consistently read to audiences of more than 250 people as well as in the Kakatiya Hotel and Towers right here in Hyderabad audiences have several times exceeded 200 people.

Your career graph I joined what was then called the Eenadu Group, which is now the Ramoji Group roughly 30 years ago. In fact, come March 2009, it will exactly be 30 years since I joined this group. I joined this group as a Marketing Manager with one of the group companies called Margadarsi Marketing Private Limited. Years' down the line I was made a director of the company. Later, when the then Managing Director resigned I was made the Director-in-charge and about 20 years ago in fact come January 2009 it will be 20 years since I was promoted as Managing Director. In view of my age and you know limitations on energy I have slowly distanced myself from the operation of the company. We have an excellent team of managers, the second line of command, they run the company. I'm only involved recently in

Theatre is to reflect life, theatre is to address issues, theatre is an instrument of social change policy and to a certain extent in the finance.

First movie, number of movies, favorite role and character Mr. Ramoji Rao, our chairman gave me an opportunity to appear in Telugu films for the first time under the direction of (late) Shri Jandhyala, an icon of comedy who later became a very dear friend. The film was Srivariki Premalekha where I spoke only in English except one dialogue towards the end. To begin with it was a very small role but I guess Mr. Jandhyala was impressed by my

home. I do eat non-vegetarian food, it's primarily seafood and it's once again fish but otherwise it's basically vegetarian. I also use certain branded foods but certainly avoid junk food as far as possible. During my years in college and school I played a lot of Table Tennis and Cricket and even in the first couple of years of college I had the privilege of playing with the likes of Abbas Ali Baig, M. L. Jaisimha and Hamid who were on the Indian team later. I also played a little bit of Tennis but right now I'm sorry to say I don't play any games and I'm definitely not a fitness freak. I have been on and off walking rather than jogging somewhat irregularly. I control my diet primarily to keep in shape in some kind of a shape because I'm an actor and I need to be good shape to be on the stage or on the screen.

ability to emote in front of the camera so he kept on extending the role. In fact, the role was made on the editor's table and you would find me at several places in this film and the film became a hit and I became known in the Telugu film industry. I haven't kept a precise count but I reckon its close to 150 feature films in addition to 6 or 7 serials in Telugu which I have done for different channels here in Hyderabad. We did a film about 18-20 years ago which starred the ace woman sprinter Ashwini. The name of the picture was also Ashwini. It was directed by Mr. Mouli where I had the comedy lead if I may say so. That was one of the most satisfying roles that I have done. It was fairly substantial too. Later, I really became very well known to the Telugu cinema audiences due to a short but an extremely interesting role under the direction of Vijay Bhaskar and the film was Nuvve Kaavaale.

Awards and recognitions Well, for film I am afraid I'm yet to win my first award. Don't think I ever will because I do very short roles. Sometime feature roles rather in the genre of comedy but yes for what I've done in the field of dramatized reading the Yudvir Foundation of the daily Hindi Milap honored me earlier this year with the Yudvir Foundation award which carried a cash component of 50 thousand rupees which I promptly donated to two organizations in elocution and debating where I was a prominent prize winner during my years of college.

Will you direct a movie sometime? I don't think I have the talent to direct a movie. My passion has been acting whether on the stage or in front of a live audience doing dramatized reading or in television or in films. I will continue to remain an actor. I am of course extremely interested in the mechanism of making a film but no. I don't think I will ever direct a film.

The theatre scene in Hyderabad I am very happy to say that I see definite signs of revival. The regional language theatre and the national language theatre have always been vibrant and active even in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Bhaskar Shewalkar for instance is doing brilliant work in Hindi, the Telugu theatre is vibrant, and there are productions round the year. While the amateur English theatre had gone into a limbo we've always had professional troupes from Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai visiting us and performing in front of audiences to fill in this gap but amateur English theatre with the Dramatic Circle of Hyderabad (DCH) having just done it's first production after a long gap including other groups like The Torn Curtains, Expressions yes it's a definite sign of progress.

On Food and Fitness Well, one has to start eating a little more carefully with advancing age. Primarily I'm very heavy on fish, vegetables and fresh fruit. The number of occasions when I eat out is getting fewer and fewer. I prefer to eat at

I don't think I have too much of a future now. Yes, I will continue to be involved in a little theatre right now. I have passed on the mantle to B.S. Prakash who retired as the General Manager from the State Bank of India and he is looking after the programming and so on. We continue to get invitations so yes, I will do this. I will also do theatre to the extent I can may be small roles primarily with the Dramatic Circle of Hyderabad (DCH) and I will continue to be on Television and act in feature films. I love doing that, it's a passion. My other interests in life really, call them hobbies if you like is that the Khayal form of Hindustani classical music interests me. I have more than 500 hours of Khayal on tape and CD's, which I listen to practically every day. I have an interest in contemporary Indian art where some now of the artists from Hyderabad who have achieved international recognition are dear friends of mine. With my modest means I have bought contemporary Indian art and the artists have also gifted some of the works to me. I love to interact with them as they are a creative lot and their number is not too many, so I have very dear friends like Laxma Rao, Laxmanelli Vaikuntam, Surya Prakash and so on.

Your smile and agility. Is it genetic or just an attitude? I consider myself very lucky through my long life. I never really had to face the kind of a crisis. I've had a very even kind of a life and it's been a comfortable life. My Father was in government service and he retired in a very high position. I have also been successful in my professional career. So there has never really been any want. I have a wife who is one in a million. She is very supportive of my activities and there is some kind of an intellectual rapport and respect for each other's privacy, space, tolerance and views. Genetically, I suppose I have inherited longevity, so primarily domestic peace of mind keeps me going and I am the way you see me.

A rock festival, or a rock fest, is a large-scale outdoor rock music concert featuring multiple acts, often spread out over several days. The first rock festivals were put on in the late 1960's and were important socio-cultural milestones. In the 1980's a minor resurgence of festivals occurred with charity as the goal.

looks

Be amorous but not obscene 40

JANUARY 2009

Are you tired of looking "blah or so boring?" Every woman goes through phases of "ugly," and oddly enough some never come out of them. If you're ready to revamp your look and turn heads, keep reading this. No matter what your body shape, you can become sexier today. Try to look different. Try to look sexy without being vulgar and sleazy. Well, that depends on the way you walk, flaunt your attitude and the way you dress to impress. Don't be a bad seed by turning yourself into a repelling Eve and don't just do anything to be hip! Don't ever dress to be a rebel either. Whatever your age you can flaunt a stunning sexy look as cool as Shobha De or as hot as Bips.

G

et clean. Bathe once every day. Feeling and looking clean is crucial. Wash with nice smelling body soap three times with a bathing sponge and it will smell great. Get out and pat yourself dry with a towel, and rub in some rich body lotion. You need to be soft and able to cuddle at all

times (do not neglect your hands, elbows, and feet). If possible try to layer matching scents on your body, such as soap, lotion, powder, and perfume. For example if you bathe with a citrus smelling body soap, try to wear a citrussmelling lotion also. Practice good dental hygiene as well; this includes brushing, flossing and even mouth wash. Get a check up and have your teeth cleaned often. Invest in a good toothbrush, water pick, and mouthwash. Always keep mints or breath spray on hand. Get groomed. Work with what you've got. But keep it neat and tidy! Trim finger and toe nails weekly, remembering to clean under the nail. No fancy nail polish colors are needed, but a simple beige color can play down any nail discoloration. If you choose to sculpt your eyebrows, get them waxed at a professional place - plucking is bad for your eyebrows, and if you make a mistake, it takes a while to grow back and worse - it's not really attractive! Once every 2 or 3 weeks, have a pampering day, including a manicure, pedicure, facial, and bubble bath, even if it's just a spa day at home. Make a trip to the hair salon at least twice a month. A new cut or style will make you feel sexy and confident. Having a change of hair color is nice, too. Go for something natural and not too dramatic. Deep condition your hair at least once a month. In the mornings, flat iron your hair or put it in a messy bun, depending on your style. Adding extensions or a wig can radically change an everyday look

from "ho-hum" to "wow" to turn a few heads. Studies show that most men are more attracted to longer hair.

Create winning skin Do a steam facial maybe once a week for up to 10 minutes, to open up your pores and get rid of blackheads and acne. To do this, get a bowl of boiling water and a towel, and just sit with your face in the steam, using the towel as a little tent/mini sauna over your head and the bowl. Caution: doing it for longer then 10 minutes will just stress out your skin, which will just make it worse! Wash your face right away afterwards with a cleanser made for your type of skin. Then rinse and splash your face with cold water to close your pores or, alternatively, get an ice cube and wait for it to melt a little. Then smooth it gently over your face until it melts; this closes your pores and prevents dirt going back into them. An alternative to this is to use a facial scrub to get rid of flaky, dead skin cells.

Show your style Invest in a good pair of curve-hugging jeans. Dark denim looks good on all body types. Jeans are the ultimate sexy accessory when paired with a tank top or baby tee. Up it a notch and add some strappy heels.

Style is something that should come in spite of itself... Because you've worked, you've looked JANUARY 2009

41

Pick some clothes that flatter your figure and that you feel comfortable in. There's no point picking the latest fashions if you don't feel comfortable in them! Pick clothes that make you feel like you! Wear lace-up flats or sneakers. Flats are cute and comfortable--two characteristics that you rarely ever find in the shoe department! Wear jewelery that excites you. Find colorful, fun, bright chunky necklaces and bracelets, but if you wear lots of pearls and beads, don't wear a shirt that has a pattern or a picture on it. Wear a monochromatic top with lots of multi-colored jewelry. Black is sexy. It hides fat rolls, creates curves and makes you feel like a goddess. Sexy undergarments. Thongs are not sexy, buy underwear that's pretty and sexy, French knickers are the most flattering panties. Make sure to find your proper size to prevent visible panty line (or visible bra cups!).

Take up dancing Sign up for lessons with a friend--salsa, ballet, hip-hop, ballroom, whatever you like. You'll gain confidence, and you will move more gracefully and sexily in everything you do, without even thinking about it. (health benefits are an obvious bonus!) Belly dancing is also another way to feel sexy and confident!

Wear make-up Just make sure not to go overboard -subtle is very sexy. Accent one feature at a time! For example, one day, put on lip-liner, bold red lipstick, and mascara. For another day, wear subtle pink or clear lip gloss, and wear eye-liner to make your eyes stand out. If you need help creating a look, a mall makeup counter or independent beauty consultant would be happy to teach you for free. Create a workout plan. Get into shape. Crunches/Lunges equal flat, hard ab muscles, lunges equal toned legs, and squats equal a toned backside. Running or jogging works all muscles of the body and increases your stamina. Plus, the hormones your body releases while exercising carry on through your evening activities to contribute to your new sexy attitude.

Sweat and be healthy Remember that if your workout goal is to lose weight you're going to need to sweat, and for an extended period of time. Lifting weights will help you drop pounds, since muscle mass burns calories increasing your metabolism. If weight loss is your goal, a good starting point is to do something that gets your heart rate up--like walking briskly, swimming, dancing, or biking--for 30 minutes, 3 times per week. Most importantly, make sure you are burning more calories in a day than you consume. This is the only way you will ever lose weight. If you exercise a bunch but then gorge yourself you will be more fit but still will not lose fat. 42

JANUARY 2009

On your marks - Get set -go Choose a work-out regimen that you enjoy. Hate running? Then don't run! Try different activities until you find one that makes you happier than you were when you began. Then, stick with it. Give it a week or two; once you're "over the hump," it will start feeling like fun instead of torture. If you're dissatisfied with your body, by all means, work on getting healthier--but remember that "sexy" isn't a body shape. It's an aura. So start working on feeling sexy now! Getting slim and toned can augment sexiness, but it can never replace it. Owning a Steinway isn't the same thing as being a master pianist; in the same way, owning a "hot" body isn't the same thing as being sexy. Learn to play the "piano" you've got! Work it and love your workouts and everyone else will too. More than anything but yourself. Being sexy is about being confident and comfortable.

Be relaxed. For real. Uncertainty and

fear tends to have an aura. Don't worry and enjoy yourself. It doesn't matter if you're larger than most girls. You don't have to look like everyone else to be beautiful. Recent research shows that introverts are more outgoing when they have a friend by their side than when they're only with a stranger; in fact, they can become just as outgoing as extroverts that way! If you need help putting yourself out there, bring a friend along--and live it up! If you like someone and they aren't into your style; don't try to imitate what they like. It will make you feel bad, and it won't work for long. If he or she doesn't like you for who you are then find someone else. Posture has a lot to do with being sexy as well. If you feel confident and walk tall, everyone else will think so too. Keep your shoulders back, and walk with a bit of a strut. Go easy on the perfume; keeping yourself clean goes a long way in preventing foul odors, no need to create NEW foul smells. (A helpful tip: spray your perfume or cologne in the air in front of you, and then walk through the cloud. This will give you just the right amount of scent.) Drink plenty of water each day -- it'll help your skin, your diet, and help you feel great! Cocoa or Shea butter is really good for normal to dry skin because it makes your body smooth and soft. Martial arts, Pilates, Yoga and Ballet are good toning activities. Dab some clear lip gloss onto your eyelids for a sexy dewy look. Apply eyeliner to the outer corners of your eyelids only, one coat of mascara, some blush or bronzer, and lip-gloss. Having a boyfriend or girlfriend who you love is a good thing, but being sexy and single is good, too. Don't obsess over your love life. Remember that beauty attracts beauty, confidence attracts confidence, and maturity attracts maturity. If you want a good catch, BE a good catch. If you concentrate on your own happiness, happy people will find their way to you. Being very confident and having a high self esteem can help you to be sexier. Are we highly influenced by films that glamorize the lifestyle without offering solutions or even bothering to show the brutal consequences? Is today's dressing a destructive and addictive behavior? Or is it the norm of the day this way?! Today's role models range from Bips to Shobha De to pander to dressing styles and statements?

Attachment

‘I

have been attached to Hyderabad ever since I set foot in this city 30 years ago. I came here in 1978 as an employee and the city has helped me grow steadily in my career and personal life. Not only me but everyone seems to share the same opinion about Hyderabad whether they belong to cultural, business, politics or software sector. For anyone Hyderabad is a platform to grow steadily in life.' 'Hyderabadis are very humane and friendly. They are always ready to lend a helping hand to a person in a crisis. Hyderabadis are also very quick to respond to anyone in distress. This is a rare and great quality endowed by them which I really admire '

Hyderabad is a city synonymous with warmth and color. It is a melting pot for different cultures.. Such a magnetic power the city has, having set their foot once on it, they never wish to return to their origin. Some celebrities share their love for the city. Come on let's know how they feel about it‌

Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam (Film actor and president State cultural council)

'Hyderabad is indeed a reflection of a mini India. Some facts are very conspicuous such as A Muslim resides in front of our house, a Sikh beside us, a Christian resides with us--- such a communal harmony makes me feel I am in a mini India. No Hyderabadi feels jealous of another and I regard this as a prime quality.' 'I like the campus of Osmania University as described by the great writer Vaddera Chandidas in his novel Hima Jwala about the rock formations, trees and the landscape being beautiful. I love the campus and I feel peaceful in its pristine surroundings. I have an affinity for All India Radio and Dooradarshan because that is where I practically learnt a lot about the vicissitudes in life. When I settled on the rocky terrains of Jubilee Hills I had an opportunity to interact with the strata of society and my presence grew in stature.' 'I also remember going to Gopi Hotel regularly opposite Ravindra Bharathi where the idli's were always a sumptuous fare and lured every big official from the adjacent government offices. I regret that the hotel doesn't exist any more. Presently, I like bisibele bhath, tomato bhath and curd vadai of Kamat Hotel.' 'Having adapted to the city I love the culture and customs of Hyderabad. Whenever I visit Charminar or Golconda I recall the history and thank the nawabs for their love and patronage of architechture. I am so attached to the city that whenever I am abroad for shootings for more than 5 days I have an urge to return to Hyderabad. I just can't feel proud but call myself a Hyderabadi.'

I

t's 20 years since I came to Hyderabad and I find it a very simple and safe place. I feel comfortable moving in the city as the people are very friendly and helpful. Unlike Mumbai, Hyderabad is less polluted and congested hence we can reach our destination faster.

Talking about my wardrobe, I buy clothes from some of the malls in Begumpet or Banjara hills. I also shop at the City Center Mall or Lifestyle. At the malls the ambience is very lively and bright and the clothes they display are of wide variety. On special occasions I go to Elahe Boutique. My groceries are sourced from the Fresh@ outlet at Banjara Hills. I love good food so my favorite restaurant is Ohris. The staff there really make you feel comfortable and the food is excellent. My favorite menu includes kababs and salad.

“W

hichever part of the world I am shooting, editing or performing in,Hyderabad and 'Hyderabadiyath' accompanies me not just because of my family's close association with the city's cultural and equestrian history but because of its unique blend of the old world charm and the modern metro feel, like very few cities around the world. It was the country's first cosmopolitan city and a practising art and culture centre four centuries ago . It gave the sub-continent its first 'Sahib-e-Diwan' in Urdu poetry in the Qutub Shahi era, gave lessons in administration, governance and lifestyle during the Asif Jahi rule to the rest of the Indian states and created a distinct identity for itself and its people the world over. The list of its 'firsts' is endless! You just can't help missing its 'Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb', its elaborate cuisine, the inherent warmth of its people. And that's where I learnt my first lessons in Theatre and Advertising. I keep coming back to it like an addiction, though having spent time in various cities and countries."

Mohammad Ali Baig (Ad Films & Theatre Celebrity)

Y

ou are a s k i n g about my city…Oh…gr eat… it's a privilege to tell about my city. Hyderabad seems to be modern with Hi-Tech decoration and at the same time it has the flavor of village atmosphere. The hundreds of years heritage still seen in bastees. Even though a lot of modernization took place with the emerge of multiplexes, city malls, our city's culture was not erased. I can say no other city in India maintains this contrast. That's our city's greatness. Recently, I visited the Falaknuma palace. The surroundings of it remind my village. I love Hyderabadi food. I go to Hotel Paradise often for its tasty biryani which you don't get any where in India. Even if my friends come from other parts of India, I offer them Paradise Biriyani. I also like Irani Chai and its Dal rice. If you pay just 20 rupees, you get a plate of Dal rice which makes you happy. In Hyderabad my favorite place is Golconda Fort. When I go there, I recall the History of Hyderabad. I shop at malls and at the same time I go to Madina, Kothi and Charminar for shopping. And one big advantage for visitors of Hyderabad is language. No one can face a language problem here. You can speak either in English or in Hindi, Urdu and Telugu.

Glimpses No, thanks says Mallika

R

emember the old saying 'Time and Tide wait for none and Time decides everything".But for Bollywood's sex bomb Mallika Sherawat time seems to be in her favor now. No wonder she has refused a big offer recently and made news. According to the grapevine director Ramgopal Varma planned to cast her with Big but, Mallika refused. Why… because, she felt that her character was not up to mark in the subject. She is now doing Hissss, a Hollywood film directed by Jennifer Lynch. She was recently conferred with the Renaissance Artist Award 2008. Hence, she won't compromise with subjects that lack substance to her character. Mallika recently attended a high profile event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. where she was invited as a guest speaker at the global Brand Forum 2008.

Deepika's hasty action

D

id you hear that? Why did Bollywood's tall, sexy girl Deepika Padukone have to face pain recently. Not for any personal problem though but for a flimsy reason like wearing a tight wig for the film CC2C (Chandini Chowk to China), she had to suffer. "Yah… I did dual role in the film. one of them, a Chinese girl. For that character I had to wear a tight wig with a fringe. Not only that, even my eyes had to be stretched out for the role. Oh… it was really painful" she tells with a smile.

Art

An I eye feast for a connoisseur

ndians have forged ahead in every field whether in art, science, technology and culture. Indian artists make different types of handicrafts which describe our culture, traditions and heritage. Recently, a national handicraft fair was held in Shilparamam, near Hi-Tech city at Madhapur. The artists from different places of India participated in this fair and displayed their artistic work. Apart from the crafts, wooden toys attracted more attention of the visitors. To mention a few the Wooden Ganesh, Srikrishna and Lord Shiva captured the hearts of the connoisseurs. If you want to buy them, you have to pay hundreds, thousands or even lakhs of rupees depending upon the quality of the wood and work. Toys made of lead by Tamilnadu artists also attracted crowds. Not only toys, but wooden doors, dining tables and chairs were also kept for sales and exhibition in this fair.

Leisure

! s k l o f e m i t y t r a p Its Alright, let's get it straight. You've been to umpteen parties until now. Even to theme parties. But have you ever wondered what it is all about and how it is done. Take a peek into the world of parties.

50

JANUARY 2009

C

reative Theme Parties help you celebrate Holidays and Special occasions in an innovative manner. If you are hosting your first party and need ideas ask yourself some queries. Have you picked a party theme? Number of guests is invited? Should food be served? Party activities to plan? Keep costs down and still have fun? Welcome to the world of THEME PARTIES -Who does not like to

throw "Theme Parties"? Gathering of close friends always signals a good time. Sometimes, though, a variation on the typical social can elevate a good time to a great time. Nowadays theme parties are as different as the crowds that host them. They come in all sizes and all ranges and to top it all, they come at all kinds of budgets. If we have money and time to arrange them, we can surely manage them. It is interesting to learn how it can be done successfully.

Is a dress code necessary?

Don't put on any airs come as you were

Imagine this-walk into a place where most of the women are decked up as bewitching brides complete with tikka and nose ring, and men in Churidaarachakans and Jodhpuri'

The idea is to wear the outfit you were wearing when you received the invitation. If your friends are good sports, deliver the invite when you know your friends will be involved in various activities: playing tennis, gardening, making breakfast, or painting. You might even take a camera along and feature candid snapshots at the party. Complement the casual mood with fondue.

As if ready to sit in the shaadi ka mandap even little girls look like child-brides in waiting for their grooms. Mehandiwali sitting in one corner with women line up for their turn to get intricate designs printed on their lovely palms. The background music is not rock shock but traditional marriage. Songs it is splash of color all the way. Sometimes, though, the music could be either a remix or songs from the hottest selling favorites, or a variation on the typical social can elevate a good time to a great time. Here are some suggestions for theme parties that are bound to be big hits. You can go Italian or feature it the French way.

A party is a social gathering, as of invited guests at a private home, for conversation refreshments, entertainment, etc. a cocktail party Hello! Please come to my party Invitations should be sent at least two weeks in advance of the party date, and longer if the party is held during the busy fall to Christmas season. ☺ They should fit the theme - make sure the type of paper, lettering, graphics, etc. all foster the theme of your planned party. ☺ If costumes are required, provide details and examples. ☺ Provide your phone number so guests with questions can call you in advance.

Come on let's shake a leg ☺ Music is a must - even if it's only background music. ☺ Music needs to coincide with the party theme. ☺ For 20s, 50s, etc. parties, use the dance music collections that abound on tape and CD.

Interested in games? ☺ Games can start upon arrival, or later, depending on the theme of your party. ☺ Games must be BEFORE the meal because people rarely feel up to games on a full tummy, and many often leave after the meal. ☺ For children's parties, remember you can adapt many popular games to the theme - e.g. "pin the glasses on the teacher" instead of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey for a school's out type party.

Wow! Nice ambience Get creative! Even Cousin It can be made from crepe paper or cellophane basket straw, and an old top hat. ☺ First, look around your house to see what you have that can be used or adapted to suit the theme. ☺ Second-hand and party stores are good sources for decorations too. ☺

For complex menus or special

dishes that fit the theme, contract with a caterer or one of the many boutique shops that will prepare the food and all you have to do is heat and serve. ☺ Find dishes that can be made ahead and frozen and/or refrigerated. ☺ Remember, even simple to prepare and serve foods and beverages can be made to fit a theme by judicious use of food coloring, fruits and vegetables that exude their color to a dish, or colored juices. -Lasya

n contrast, others may have so much work to do that they do not exercise or eat properly. They may cut down on sleep, or may worry so much that they sleep badly. They may get so carried away with work and meeting daily pressures that they do not take time to see the doctor or dentist when they need to. All of these are likely to harm health. Do you know that your body reacts negatively to the stress and the end result of chronic stress is premature aging? Your DNA is affected over time. The part of the DNA associated with aging, the telomere, protects the DNA from damage. Well your telomeres fray away with aging and with the protection gone, the cell dies. Stressed out individuals display more badly damaged telomeres as compared to their peers who are better able to cope with stress. If your work is too stressful, maybe a less stressful job might be in order. If you are overwhelmed at home, consider getting help from friends or relatives, or hiring help. Find ways to cope with stress. Release tension with a run or a swim or go out for a walk to get away from it all, temporarily.

is just as damaging. USE SUNSCREEN AT ALL TIMES Go for an SPF15 for full protection. The sun's UV rays damage your skin at cellular level. Though your body rapidly repairs the damage, if the damage is too much, your skin gets red and blisters form as you develop sunburn. Even a tan is a sign of skin damage as the darkening of the skin wit melanin is a defense mechanism against sun damage. UV rays damage the skin's collagen Sun blocks have chemical or physical sunscreens to block off the UV rays. SPF or Sun Protection Factor tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun before you burn. For example, an SPF 4 sunscreen allows you to stay in the sun 4 times longer than if you had gone without any protection. For optimal protection, go for at least SPF15, and reapply frequently if you sweat a lot or get into the water. EAT YOUR FRUIT, VEGGIES AND NUTS

QUIT SMOKING

These are rich in antioxidants. To cut the long story short, we are constantly bombarded by free radicals. These could be the by product of oxidation within the body, through the body's natural processes, or could be due to environmental factors.

Cigarette smoke ages your body prematurely in too many ways to list in this one article. If you smoke, quit. If you don't smoke, don't start. Stay away from smoking areas and keep away from smokers when they puff their cigarettes as second hand smoke

Either way, free radicals wreak havoc on out bodies. Free radicals are unstable and steal electrons from their neighbors, rendering them unstable too, leading to a chain reaction. In this way, cell membranes and even the DNA of cells get damaged which in turn, speeds up the aging process. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating electrons to

How do you identify an over-stressed lifestyle? When under pressure, some people are more likely to drink heavily or smoke, as a way of getting immediate chemical relief from stress. them and stabilizing them, even while they stay stable themselves. In this way, antioxidants eliminate the threat. By eating your fruit and veggies and some nuts, you get the antioxidants your body needs to beat those free radicals. SLEEP AT LEAST 8 HOURS EVERY NIGHT. When you sleep, your body repairs itself most effectively, producing new cells to replace the old, worn out cells. By depriving yourself of sufficient sleep, you do not allow your body to regenerate itself properly and end up aging more quickly than you should. No doubt, this regeneration of cells is ongoing even when you are awake, but when you sleep, the natural renewal process is at its peak. When you don't get enough sleep, your body produces more stress hormones that interfere with your skin's collagen production. USE A SUNSCREEN Collagen is what supports your skin and as collagen levels decrease your skin begins to sag and wrinkles form. Look at yourself after a sleepless night. Lack of sleep gives you puffy eyes and dark rings which make you look much older. So grandma was right after all. Eat your veggies, stay out of the sun and sleep early every night to preserve your youth.

Hunger

If you are eating out you must watch every morsel you eat. Eating out provides a chance to celebrate or socialize, an opportunity to experience new foods or an easier alternative to cooking when you are hard-pressed for time or just tired. All said and done, dining out often may pose formidable challenges to a healthy lifestyle. If you eat out on very special occasions, have no qualms about ordering what you want. Enjoy the meal. If you are habituated to eating out, it is important to make the right choices from the items on the menu. It requires hard thinking and sound planning.

T

he maxim "You are what you eat" is in a way food for thought. A healthy diet presupposes eating plenty of fruit and vegetables; substantial quantities of starchy foods such as rice, bread, pasta and potatoes; variety of proteinrich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and pulses as well as some milk and dairy foods. It's OK if you take small amounts of foods that are high in fat, salt or sugar. Frequenting eateries means you may unwittingly compromise on your well-thought out plan to maintain ideal weight. The reasons include: Portion sizes may be large Food may have been prepared with added fat or sugar The meal may not be balanced, say without vegetables and fruit. In Hyderabad, where several swanky eateries have mushroomed, you can eat out and eat healthy too. Several restaurants offer delicacies that are low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol. That means less chance of raising blood cholesterol. Mind you, high blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and it's also a risk factor for stroke. Choose restaurants wisely. Don't wait until you are very hungry to go to your favorite place to eat. Otherwise, your decisions may be on impulse and you may end up with rather unhealthy choice of items on your platter. Give yourself some time to pick the right place

56

JANUARY 2009

- preferably one that offers nutrition information. Let your favorite food be Moghlai, Chinese, Japanese, Cajun, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, French or whatever. You need to carefully select items from the menu. Normally, fried, au gratin, crispy, escalloped, pan-fried, sautĂŠed or stuffed foods are high in fat and calories. Relatively speaking, it is always better to go for steamed, broiled, baked, grilled, poached or roasted foods. Order items prepared with vegetable oil (canola, olive, corn, soy, sunflower or safflower) or soft margarine, instead of those made with butter. Prefer soft margarine for your bread. Limit high-sodium foods, particularly those pickled, in cocktail sauce, smoked, in broth or au jus or in soy or teriyaki sauce. Have gravy, sauces and dressings served on the side, so you can control the amount you eat or skip them completely.

The right menu Be positively choosy. Refuse the bread/roll basket. Instead of filling up on the bread (and spiking calories), you'll have room to enjoy your meal. See if you can request healthy substitutes (baked, instead of fried; olive oil instead of butter). Pass on gravies and sauces. If you have a salad, ask for dressing on the side. Enjoy alcohol in moderation. Alcohol has almost as many calories per gram as fat, but it has no nutrients. As for dessert, go for low-fat ones like

cappuccino with milk froth, creme caramel, frozen yogurt, fruit salad with yoghurt, sorbet or low fat ice-cream, fruit mousse, strawberries or meringues. Try herbal tea or decaffeinated coffee. If you just can't resist dessert, order something with fruit and split it with a dining partner. At times eateries may push unhealthy combinations. For you it may be slightly more expensive to choose items separately, but it could be a healthy choice, considering what ultimately gets into your system. Order a salad to round out the meal. In any case, don't fall for the size trap. If you order 'medium' fries at a popular fast food, it will give you 350 calories and 4 ½ teaspoons of fat, while super-sizing could double the calorific intake and spike the fat up to 7 teaspoons.

Tastes cannot override hygiene Sometimes, an eatery may offer you delicacies that floor you. That doesn't mean you should be blind to its unclean public areas or dirty tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You can't afford to be served by staff with soiled hands, grimy fingernails or dirty aprons. If the restaurant has overflowing waste bins or bags of rubbish even outside the premises, it means they have places that breed pests and flies. Don't ever tolerate hair or insects in food. Eat slowly and enjoy your meal. Instead of cleaning your plate, take a doggy's bag home.
