“I am very excited to be part of the Agenda Advisory Board. As a building surveyor actively involved in making buildings more sustainable, this is a real opportunity to help shape the Forum content to reflect the needs of today’s and, equally importantly, tomorrow’s NHS.

Iain is responsible for GIB’s public sector investment activities in energy efficiency, which include LED streetlighting, building retrofit and district heating projects, and he manages GIB teams based in Edinburgh and London.

“I am looking forward to playing a key role within the Energy Efficient Retrofit Forum and representing the UK Green Building Council as part of the Agenda Board.

The NHS is one of the biggest consumers of energy in the UK and there is an imperative to understand the greater efficiencies to be derived from the available retrofit technologies. The opportunity to achieve savings which can be directly used on patient care is very attractive: innovative collaborations between the NHS and commerce help to facilitate change and expedite savings across the NHS Built Estate.

Iain has been involved in financing public sector projects for 20 years in debt, equity and advisory.

I look forward to introducing some of the best technologies and innovative initiatives for their implementation on the day.”

Prior to joining GIB he worked for RBS, KPMG and PwC in renewable energy and infrastructure financing.

UK-GBC’s mission is to radically improve the sustainability of the built environment, and this of course includes healthcare buildings which must be maintained in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way, with retrofit playing a key part. I look forward to sharing examples of best practice from within UK-GBC’s membership and working with NHS estate managers to drive change.”

The challenge for delegates is to collaborate with NHS Officials and other key stakeholders, to identify and agree on a clear investment strategy that enables the highest levels of energy efficiency with the promised cost savings... Objective 1: Saving the NHS Money - Applying innovative solutions that reduce energy costs - Value - As well as reducing costs in use, energy efficient measures can avoid obsolescence and protect capital values. -Technology - what is out there? - Growth of renewable energy and reduction in consumption through passive and active elements is crucial to the financial bottom line of NHS organisations - M2M systems monitoring energy usage could save local government close to £190 million per year. Business model and financial innovation combined with the need for seamless integration of technology makes M2M communication key to adoption. Objective 2: Becoming Energy Efficient - Reducing consumption, meeting government targets for energy use - The process - How to identify, evaluate, justify and deliver energy efficient measures. - Managing and monitoring - What are the government targets? Objective 3: Making Projects Happen - Collaboration between NHS, Suppliers, Financiers etc, turning these discussions into action - Utlising Strategic Estates Partnerships to collaborate with Private Sector - Funding opportunities – building the business case. - Government backed grants/initiatives. - Overcoming barriers - Planning, payback periods, restrictive lease covenants etc... - Considered procurement - balancing the risks. - Collaborative solutions - A single technology may not be the only way. - Assisting the NHS to provide the right information to the right people to enable strategic decisions to be made. - Green Leases - Encouraging a collaborative ‘green’ approach to the Landlord and Tenant relationship.
