Message from the Mayor

While summer is starting to draw to a close, there are still plenty of exciting things going on in our city for all ages. With Sea Week and Parks Week, this month promises heaps of fun for all ages - on land and at sea!

Even though school’s back, there’s still plenty for the kids to do this month. From the Toy Library in Wainui and Koraunui, to the Minecraft Pop-in and Play in Moera - our tamariki are spoiled for choice with the activities across the city.

There are a range of Pride events too, which offer several activities for our rainbow whānau. It’s so important that we’re inclusive of all our people, and it’s great to see specific events being put on specifically for our rainbow community.

Something I’m really looking forward to doing this month is officially opening the Maungaraki Community Library. Initially built for Maungaraki School, the community approached us with the idea for it to operate as a public library outside of school hours. We thought it was a fantastic idea, and I’m really stoked we’ve been able to make it happen. This shows what’s possible when we get alongside our communities and support their aspirations. I can’t wait to officially open it!

Those are just some of the highlights, but as you’ll see, there’s plenty more happening in the Hutt this month. I look forward to seeing you out and about!

B
- Mayor Campbell Barry Kia ora! Welcome to the March edition of What’s On in Lower Hutt.

Maungaraki Community Library and Precinct official opening

Maungaraki School

Saturday 25 March, 9am-4pm

Maungaraki School, Hutt City Libraries, and the Maungaraki community are joining forces to operate a new purpose-built library and community space.

The new building houses a library and community space and has been built as part of the new Maungaraki Community Precinct. The Precinct is a once-in-a-generation refresh of community and school assets in response to the significant growth of young families in the area. When finished, it will include multiple playgrounds, a 450-metre sealed bike track, revitalised fields and surfaces, flying fox, an upgraded community hall, new entrance, carparking, and more.

The library will initially be open to the public 3-6pm weekdays and 9am-1pm Saturdays, in the heart of the Maungaraki Community Precinct on Dowse Drive, and will be staffed by both the school and Hutt City Libraries.

Join the school, the Maungaraki community, Hutt City Libraries, and Mayor Campbell Barry on Saturday 25 March for the official opening of the library and Precinct at 9am, or come along from 1pm-4pm to the Community Open Day to check out the library, bike track, and find out more about the different clubs and activities available in the community.

Unhinged: Opening the Door to the Dowse Collection

The Dowse Art Museum

25 Mar – 13 Aug 2023

Flying tricycles, a pyramid of cats and a rainbow of ceramics; some of what you can discover in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Featuring over 1000 items from the Dowse art collection, this exhibition is an opportunity to explore some familiar favourites alongside forgotten treasures. Unhinged includes peculiar peeks into the most remarkable corners of the collection like bedazzling ballet costumes, playful paintings and exquisite contemporary glass.

This delightfully eccentric show offers new ways to access and encounter the collection. You can simply wander each space in your own time absorbing the curious combinations or you can follow one of our customised tours designed to uncover some of the more intriguing objects and their fascinating stories. Prepare to be enchanted, baffled and surprised.

This exhibition is part of a major project to refurbish our collection storage spaces that will help us to care for our collection into the future. This includes re-housing all of our nearly 3500 items ready to go into their new home.

Head to Connected.govt.nz to discover how you can get connected with employment, education, training, business support or staff for your jobs.

You can also telephone 0800 264 737 or drop in to one of the library pop up desks for more information.
