& Olivia Buc lland Celebrity Secrets caught up with the reality stars to find out about their wedding plans Interview: Claire Muffett-Reece THE MOMENT THE Celebrity Secrets team meet up with Alex Bowen and Olivia Buckland, it’s clear to see they’re besotted with each other. Their spark is as fresh as it was when they fell in love, on camera, on ITV2 reality series Love Island back in 2016. Since coming off the show as runners-up, they’ve got engaged, got a dog – Reggie, who wins everyone over on our shoot at Essex wedding venue, Braxted Park – bought their forever home and are now busy organising their wedding. How are they feeling about it all? We sat them down for an exclusive chat…
Alex and Olivia, you’re tying the knot this September at an Essex country manor house. How are you feeling? Alex ‘I’m really excited. I’ve had my stag party, Liv has her hen do soon, then all of a sudden the wedding will be here.’ Olivia ‘We’re on a countdown now. I’m just nervous because we haven’t sent out the invites yet!’ Alex ‘We did save the dates though, didn’t we?’ Olivia ‘They were only for the day guests, so the people we want to invite to the evening have no idea!’

Tell us about the day itself… O ‘We chose September because every year when growing up I went to our town carnival, and it was always really nice weather. But last year on the date we’ve chosen it rained!’ A ‘We’ve got to keep positive for sunshine.’ O ‘The venue grounds are beautiful so we want to get some great shots outside. The bridal suite is also incredible and was one of the reasons we chose to get married there.’

Why Essex rather than Alex’s home town of Birmingham – or even overseas? A ‘Overseas is out of the question for Olivia, because she’s already talking about our vow renewal! Liv’s family is much bigger, and mine’s quite separated, so it makes sense to marry in Essex.’ O ‘It’s going to be a big wedding, and asking everyone to travel overseas would never work.’ Let’s go back to the very beginning. Did you think you’d found ‘the one’ when you met on Love Island? A ‘We spoke about this yesterday. Someone put a clip on Twitter showing Liv on the show saying ‘I’m never going to get married’. I retweeted it saying, ‘Well, you are now!’’ O ‘We tried to keep things casual because we didn’t want to put pressure on ourselves, but every day we just got closer. It happened really naturally, just in a really unnatural place.’ A ‘I think that’s why we worked out. If you force something you end up just wrecking it.’ What did you think of each other at first? O ‘I thought he was going to be a player! He’s good-looking and has an amazing body, so I thought he’d be full of himself.’ A ‘Never judge a book, Liv…’ O ‘I had a bad image of men at the time. I thought he was fit – but would be an arsehole!’ A ‘I went on the show late and didn’t watch it before I went in. The day I got there I had to watch some episodes to catch up, and I liked Liv straight away.’ Was it weird leaving the show and dating, knowing you’d been intimate already? O ‘Not at all. Alex went back to Birmingham, but within two hours we realised we couldn’t be apart. He moved to Essex the next day and we’ve lived together ever since.’ Who said ‘I love you’ first? A ‘I’ve never told anyone this before now! It was the live final and Olivia was nervous, so I put my arm around her and said, ‘You’ll be alright, Liv… I love you.’ And she didn’t hear me! It was another few months before I let on I’d actually said it first.’
O ‘Before then I thought I’d said it first! We’d gone out for dinner with Cara [De La Hoyde] and Nathan [Massey], and I’d had a couple of strawberry daiquiris and was feeling brave… I whispered, ‘Can I tell you something?’ And he went, ‘Yeah’ so I said, ‘I love you. ’ I’m glad he said it back!’ on

Tell us about your 2016 engagement in New York… A ‘I’d bought Olivia’s engagement ring three months after we came out of Love Island. I wanted a Rolex, so Liv said, ‘If I buy you a Rolex, you’ve got to buy me an engagement ring’ as a joke. A few days later I was shopping in Lakeside and spotted a ring in the style she liked. I bought it, then kept it at my mum’s before we went to New York.’
Who knew you were going to ask Olivia to marry you? A ‘I asked her mum and dad for permission – and they both said yes straight away because they love me! Plus, at Liv’s clothing launch for Quiz, I got all her friends together to tell them.’ Tell us how it panned out… A ‘It was the day before New Year’s Eve and I hired a rooftop overlooking the One World Trade Center. I was so nervous that I was really off with Liv, so we had a bit of a squabble.’ O ‘You were so quiet all day and I couldn’t understand why you weren’t talking to me!’ A ‘The ring was in my pocket, so when she cuddled me I shrugged her off! Finally we got to the rooftop, where I got down on one knee and proposed.’ O ‘I went, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ I was so shocked though that I didn’t cry! A couple of hours later we were in the bar and I burst into tears, because I realised what had just happened.’ celebritysecrets.com

We love how you didn’t rush, waiting just under two years to get married… A ‘It’s a great thing to call someone your fiancée. After that it’s just husband and wife for the rest of your life.’ O ‘We wanted to enjoy being engaged, plus we hadn’t been together long. It was also about security, because I struggled with trust issues before I met Alex. Being engaged has made me feel so secure.’ Who’s been doing most of the planning? O ‘Alex doesn’t really get involved with any of the organising!’ A ‘I’ve done my suits, and Liv’s sorted the main things with the wedding. Now she’s done the hard bit I can get involved!’ What can you tell us about the dress? O ‘I’ve actually only just chosen it! I found one then realised I didn’t really like it, so I ended up choosing another – but still wasn’t completely sure. Then when I did find ‘the one’ I loved the newer version of it!’ Was there a set style you wanted? O ‘I’ve tried on every dress possible – probably over 40! I cried at a lot of them and thought I’d found ‘the one’, when in fact I was just overexcited by it all.’ A ‘She cries at everything.’ O ‘There’s so many stunning dresses out there, but there will be one that feels like you when you wear it, and that’s the reason I finally chose mine.’ Alex, tell us about your suit… A ‘Moss Bros are making it from scratch. I’ve got 11 groomsmen and everyone’s getting their suit tailored, whereas I’ve had mine custom-made. I’ve picked all the buttons and the lining on the inside, and there’s even some words in there.’ O ‘It says ‘Alex and Olivia’ along with our wedding date.’ Is everything sorted with your bridesmaids? O ‘I’ve got seven. My little sister, who’ll be three, will be my flower girl. I’m having four friends from school and I’ve also got Cara and Tina [Stinnes], who are my best mates from Love Island.’
Alex, reports state you’ve got three best men… A ‘I’ve got two best men, and the rest of the party are ushers. Even my granddad’s one!’ Will your dog, Reggie, be your ring bearer? O ‘We’re going to try and train him.’ A ‘He loves cheese, so if we put some in my pocket he might sniff it out!’ How many guests are invited? O ‘For the day it’s around 100, and in the evening it will go up to 250. Is there anybody you’re not inviting? O We’ve lost touch with most of the people from Love Island so a lot of them aren’t coming.’ Alex, are you turning up in a supercar? A ‘I need to get my transport sorted! I want six Bentleys for the groomsmen and I want to arrive in something cool, like a Lamborghini.’ What about entertainment? A ‘We’re getting a magician for the evening, and we’ve also got fireworks at the end of the night.’ O ‘My cousin sings and plays the guitar, so he’s performing. We’ve also got a special guest in mind, which I’m really hoping will happen.’ Any plans for flowers? O ‘When I told Alex the cost of the flowers he nearly had a heart attack!’

A ‘How can something that grows out of the ground be so expensive?’ O ‘I’ve even made sure that the bathroom has lots of flowers in it! I want all our guests to be sitting on the loo while looking at a really nice flower arrangement!’ What are you doing for food? O ‘We’ve got a sit-down meal, then in the evening we’re having a hog roast and BBQ. And of course there’s a free bar…’ A ‘We’ve got to have a free bar. I want all my friends and family to have the best time ever and really enjoy themselves.’ What can you tell us about your cake? O ‘It’s huge! Moving on to your hen and stag parties. Alex, what was yours like? A ‘I went to Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago. It was mental – there were over 20 of us for five days! I need to sort a UK one next, probably in Birmingham.’ O ‘I’ve got two hens planned. I’m going to Mykonos with my girlfriends, and then there’s a calmer one in the UK, where we’re going to do stuff like clay pigeon shooting.’ What are you planning for your honeymoon? O ‘We’re going to Sri Lanka for a week first, because Alex needs to be constantly active!’ A ‘There’s no way I could lie on a sun lounger for two weeks.’
O ‘Sri Lanka’s our travelling holiday, then after that we’re off to the Maldives once Alex has worn himself out.’

Speaking of wearing yourself out… Alex, you said you wanted to get Olivia pregnant on your wedding night… A ‘I did say that, I don’t know if we’re ready – but then again who is ever really ready? Liv’s got her show and I’ve got my clothing brand, so it’s not necessarily the right time.’ O ‘We’ve both got really cool things coming up with our careers, so we’ll see!’ You’ve got a TV crew following you around today. What’s that about? O ‘They’re filming a special about our wedding, called Alex and Olivia Said Yes, which is being aired on TLC in September. We were worried at first it might be too invasive, but I respect the channel and the crew are a great bunch.’ A ‘Plus it’s something we can look back on in years to come.’ Have they filmed you arguing? O ‘No – as we get on really well! If we bicker it’s because I have to say something about 20 times.’ A ‘And then it’s over in five minutes.’ O ‘I once read something that said it’s not you versus him, it’s you two against the problem. So that’s how we look at life – it’s never us against each other, it’s us against anything else.’

What makes you realise you’ve found your soul mate? O ‘I know what relationships shouldn’t be like, because I’ve been in them. Then I met Alex. It’s the way he treats me, the way we get along, and the way we laugh together. He’s my best friend and I can’t wait to become Mrs Bowen.’ A ‘Before I met Liv I used to love my own company. Now I always want her by my side, even if we’re just watching TV. We were meant to be together.’
It sounds like you rarely sit still with all your business ventures… A ‘I’m rebranding my clothes line. It’s not even out yet and there’s stores that already want it.’ O ‘Next year I’m going to start the women’s side of the brand. I’ve also got my show, Second Chance Dresses, on TLC. I’m so happy as I’ve always wanted to be a presenter.’ Will we see you on any more reality TV? A ‘Liv would be great on Strictly…’ O ‘I danced for 15 years when I was young, so it would be lots of fun. We also want to do I’m A Celebrity but we’d be rubbish at the tasks. Alex would do a Gemma Collins!’ A ‘I couldn’t cope with the rations, I’m a real grump when I’m hungry. I need to eat over 4,000 calories a day or I lose weight!’ What about presenting Love Island? A ‘I always thought we should host the challenges, but Liv’s the better presenter.’ O ‘It would be interesting to be on the other side of the show though…’ A ‘There’s loads of happy stuff that they don’t put in as it would be boring to watch. It’s a great gig – you just sunbathe, talk and do naughty things with each other!’ What would you say to this year’s contestants? A ‘Enjoy yourself and don’t think about anything else.’ O ‘People try to act a certain way because they want to come across right, but the real you will always come out in the end. You and John postponed your wedding. Why? ‘There wasn’t enough time to plan and we didn’t think about practicalities. Planning the engagement party made me realise how time-consuming it was going to be. We decided to get the house sorted first, have a couple of holidays and have the wedding later. The prestigious five-star Achnagairn Castle in the Highlands of Scotland was named the top wedding venue in the UK by Harper’s Bazaar magazine in 2017. We went to find out what’s so special about this Scottish Highland castle. Well, let’s start with the best. The ballroom is clearly the jewel in Achnagairn’s crown. Imagine the Hogwarts Great Hall, but add a level of magic that even Harry Potter doesn’t have. Gillian Lacey-Solymar, the owner of the castle, told us: “I love showing couples around. Only last week, one bride-to-be walked into the ballroom and burst into tears. She said it was everything she’d dreamed of for her wedding”. The castle is always rented exclusively says Gillian. “Our motto here is 'escape the ordinary' and we really want to make our guests’ stays extraordinary. With complete privacy, you can celebrate all night, and everyone can stay on the estate.”
It’s true: the estate sleeps 135 people, with 24 castle bedrooms, and seven Mini-Manors (each with five to six bedrooms) in the grounds. All accommodation is five-star exclusive use, and the bedrooms are all uniquely designed. Many are vast (some quite literally the size of my flat…) and have four-poster beds, fireplaces, amazing views, and bathrooms you will want to put straight on Instagram. The food and the staff are yet another of the highlights. The young chefs have just been given two AA Rosettes for “culinary excellence,” and that’s no surprise. We found the food amazing. And the staff are attentive but never intrusive. And pricing? You’d think it would cost a pretty penny, given the celebs that have tied the knot there (can’t reveal who, sorry), but frankly it is excellent value for money. Prices start at £5,900 for a wedding for 70 (assuming guests pay for their own accommodation) but at other times weddings have reached six figures for couples who really splash out. Achnagairn prides itself on having something for everyone: from surprisingly affordable celebrations, through to limitless luxury.

Dawn, ’fess up – what’s the secret to your 23-year marriage? ‘We have a laugh together. We also never sulk or go to bed after an argument. We scream and we shout at each other, but we get it off our chests – and then we get on with things.’ You hosted your friends’ vow renewals at your mansion last year… Any plans for your own? ‘That would be my biggest dream – but it was hard enough getting Ashley down the aisle the first time! I’m not holding out for the second… But I’m still trying!’ What is it about Ashley that makes him your partner for life? ‘He’s my best friend, a fantastic dad and the most amazing husband you could ever wish for. He’s supportive, strong and very intelligent – not to mention easy on the eye!’
What do you get up to when the cameras stop rolling? ‘Our favourite thing to do, at least five or six days a week, is sit on the sofa together with popcorn and a hot mug of Vimto, which has always been our family drink. We watch box sets while the girls cartwheel around our lounge.’ Take us back to your wedding in 1995… Was it a massive affair? ‘It was a beautiful day. We got married in Middleton, Ashley’s home town, and the reception was for 500 guests – I think my dad’s still paying it off today! It was a wedding like no other. We had a three-foot cake with massive flowers decorating it, and a 20-foot Champagne waterfall made out of balloons. We really went all out!’ What do you remember most about the day? ‘Feeling happy that all my family were together in one room. Ashley’s speech really came from the heart as well. He spoke beautifully about his parents, me, my family and our relationship.’

Is there anything you’d change if you could go back and do it all again? ‘No. For me it was a perfect day – apart from maybe the hairstyle!’
