FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE It’s the busy time of year for the active CAMRA members.

We have just finished our POTY (Pub of the Year) judging. Congratulations to our award winning pubs it’s been a great competition with over 75 pubs nominated.

We now have to survey the qualifying pubs to make sure the details in the next Good Beer Guide (GBG 2020) are as accurate as possible.

Further to the above we are now busy filling in the details of our HRACF (Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival) which is being held 11th to 13th April at Hull Minster. Why not volunteer and get a free drink or two? Details are elsewhere in this issue.

HULL PUBS UPDATE BY JON MAJOR Let me start by wishing all readers of this column a very happy 2019 and I hope so far it’s going well.

that Guy so enthusiastically explained on that day came to life and more when I entered for the opening night.

Unfortunately I have not got much of a report this edition as I’ve been out of Hull since the 3rd January and I’m only picking bits up through the grapevine.

The bar itself is very tasteful and in keeping for the Fruit Market area of the city, not only has it kept its warehouse feel but it is also comfortable to sit and relax by the marina.

I can start by writing about a pub I visited at Christmas time which is the Thomas Strawberry, many would remember this as the Kingston Arms off Holderness Road.. The new owners have completely refurbished the bar area and added three handpulled ales of which two are from local brewers. I really enjoyed my visit and sampled some ales of very good quality.

On the bar itself is an array of great quality ales, ciders and lagers from local, national and international breweries in cask, craft, bottles and cans. Of course the main selection comes from the on-premises brewery itself. Yorkshire Brewing has gone into collaboration with Marko Karjalainen the brewer for Bone Machine brewery and his business partner brother Kimmo who are also brewing on site to bring a great selection of local ales.

The Black Boy on High Street has changed hands and Alan and Kim of last year’s ‘pub of the year’ George Hotel have taken charge, I wish them luck and I’m sure they’ll soon have it thriving once more.

You can read about my travels further in this edition.

On my return from my 2 months out of the city I was lucky enough to time it to coincide with the preview night of the opening of Yorkshire Brewing Company’s Taphouse Brewpub on Humber Street.

The brewery part of it on the opening night was very much work in progress but is completely open to view from the bar where you can witness the magic in action, and not only is the brewery open to view but so is the cellar which is brilliant idea.

The food selection was from the ever growing ‘Shoot the Bull’ which offers their traditional street food menu.

Taphouse will also host live music nights as well as organised brewery tours where you can be part of the brewing process.

The last time I paid a visit was before Christmas and I was stood in the middle of a building site chatting to Guy Falkingham the owner of the brewery explaining his vision for the premises that he is in partnership with Lee Kirman from the nearby Minerva pub. His vision was pretty hard to imagine amongst the timber and bricks that surrounded us, but I must admit everything Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

This is a much welcome addition to the growing regenerated area of Hull and is a bold, exciting move from all involved. This will be a brilliant addition to the real ale trail of that area and may it go from strength to strength.

EAST YORKSHIRE PUBS UPDATE BY MARK BAINTON Highfield in Beverley on Highfield Road re-opened recently, selling Landlord and Wainwright when visited, we wish the new licensee all the best.

February, the vast majority of our regions pubs enjoyed the presence of more customers over the festive period than last year.

Coleman’s cider company held their annual Wassail at Sledmere House in January which was the venue for our Branch Social annual Wassail trip, a report of which is elsewhere in this issue.

Congratulations go out to The Goodmanham Arms, Goodmanham and The King William IV in Cottingham winning the Pub of the Year and Runner up awards respectively in their category.

The Green Dragon also in Beverley has added two more hand pulls to their ten already on the bar, which will come in handy when they have their beer festival.

The Tour de Yorkshire is heading our way again.

Bridlington again will be hosting a stage of the race and they hope to see further large crowds in the town and surrounding villages. We hope they will enjoy a pint in our pubs.

The pub dates from the 1700’s so it’s crazy it was even been contemplated for demolition/ development we wish them luck with this venture.

A PLEASANT HULL STROLL Doom Bar, but better that two well-kept beers that customers can drink than four when the quality cannot be maintained. Adnams Brewery with two keg beers, neither dispensed with extraneous gas was also on offer, effectively making four beers to choose from. Both bars are now connected internally thanks to some reconfiguring of the toilets, and an overall refresh of the décor, has not really changed the pub we remember so fondly.

Following on from some comments about rather unusual features at the Haworth Arms we paid a visit, and overall although cask ales are no longer available at the main bar the changes are largely cosmetic. The pub’s special features such as the revolving door, dome, and brass fittings are all unchanged, the décor is tasteful, and the pub’s owners Stonegate have kept their more mature regular customers’ happy by leaving an area of the bar as it was. I cannot ignore that rather than carpet an artificial turf has been installed; quirky you bet, what a conversation piece, and this pub is big enough that there are plenty of other corners to sit in. What’s more the pub now features LocAle from Atom Brewery both in cask and the more progressive keg. Well done Stonegate for respecting the past and the special features of this special pub yet bringing the modern world in too.

We continued to walk towards Larkins, passing what was Harringtons now Hang Out, sadly real ale on hand-pull has been removed but Atom Brewery was well represented with a number of their beers available in bottles and cans. Whilst it isn’t for everyone we cannot close our eyes to the changing tastes of younger drinkers, this is so at Peoples’ Republic, to be honest a place we have walked past previously, however on this occasion we went in and enjoyed the very relaxing atmosphere and two different beers from a very extensive choice, and a small bonus we were able to do some festival business too.

Tofts and the Lounge were both closed, not trading.

Not far from the Haworth is the Gardeners Arms, once our local when we lived in the area, back then the choice was Tetley Mild or Tetley Bitter and our drinks were often ready for us in the time it took us to walk in and get to the bar.

So it felt rather ironic that the pub has returned to a policy of just offering two cask ales, at the time of our visit Black Sheep Bitter and Sharp’s Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

Larkins was busy with Sunday lunches so we didn’t linger too long, but long enough to enjoy a half from a choice of two LocAles, from Wold Top and Great Newsome and another which I

other than Theakston Best Bitter which is permanent choice we can only recommend you go there and find out for yourself.

Onto the Queens, this is a dog friendly local, but its unique feature is a sloping floor because it suffers slight subsidence. A strange feeling even without a drink! This was the first pub visited that day where there were no discernable changes. On the bar Wychwood Hobgoblin; Banks Sunbeam and it was good to see that now that Young’s brews are owned by Marstons two Young’s had reached Hull.

I started off by trying to supplement Jon’s news and have ended up with a report of a pleasant stroll with beer or a pub crawl, whichever way you look at our walk it was a very enjoyable afternoon. If you haven’t visited this part of Hull’s pub scene for some time, try it you won’t be disappointed.

We called it a day after Pave, and caught the final few songs of the afternoon’s entertainment and we tried to recruit the singer for the beer festival, but unfortunately he travelled too far to return. Their beers were all in excellent condition, but as their choices vary so frequently

Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle. The Definition of Local: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE FROM PETE FLEMING Last autumn I became the Membership Secretary of the branch and so it is my job to keep members informed about matters related to membership and the CAMRA discount schemes operated by pubs. I will endeavour to keep people informed by articles in Pub Mirror.

The Branch membership currently stands at 1,270 which makes us the fourth largest branch in the Yorkshire region behind Leeds, Sheffield and York. As a region Yorkshire is the fourth largest behind East Anglia, East and West Midlands with 15,700 members. So we are fairly big but it is in everyone’s interest for the CAMRA family to grow and become more diverse to represent real ale drinkers nationally.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers?

Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life.

JON’S JOURNEY Shortly before the New Year I got asked if I’d like to look after a friend’s pub down in Dorset for a while whilst he took a sabbatical, I agreed as I’ve visited the pub before and made some good friends there.

(aAll these were incredibly welcoming pubs, the Saxon Bar had four real ales on (30 pence discount for CAMRA members), a wide selection of real ciders and key keg ales, on my visit I had to laugh because the real ale selection included Saltaire and Acorn ales, which are Yorkshire ales and we see a lot of in Hull, but I opted for the Portsmouth brewery. Over the weeks I visited here on several occasions trying the ever rotating selection of good quality ales.

Over the next few weeks I visited a few towns surrounding Burton.

The pub the Oak Inn is in a lovely village called Burton just outside of Christchurch and is a very popular food destination as well a busy community pub. Luckily it has real ale on but only Sharp’s Doom Bar and Sea Fury but I can honestly say it’s of very high quality.

I used my time off (Monday’s & Tuesday’s) discovering this beautiful part of the country situated south of the Wessex Way and on the periphery of the Jurassic Coast and doing research for those of you planning a holiday or visiting this area.

a cellar bar very popular for its live music every night of the week and its award winning beer garden. I tried the Jurassic Ale from Dorset Brewing Company followed by a very tasty Elchoco Stout from Bristol Beer Factory. On the way home I stopped at Southbourne where I visited the Brewhouse & Kitchen a large open plan building where the brewing takes place in the centre of the pub, I would have liked to stay to watch the magic happen but time was against me so I tried a pint of ‘Synchronicity’ which is an amber ale with a strong burnt caramel taste and left to try the micro pub down the road. The Wight Bear Ale House had four ales which I tried half of each one from Kettlesmith, Pig & Porter, Yeovil and Gritchie breweries all of which were excellent quality.

Armed with my iPad I used the Good Beer Guide, What Pub and Cask Finder apps to find local hostelries.

The first area I visited was the beautiful, historic town of Christchurch visiting the Olde George, Thomas Tripp and micro pub Saxon Bar.(below)

Poole, a town I’ve never visited, was next on my list and I fell in love with place not only for its great range of pubs but also its beautiful Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

BY JON MAJOR coastline and Quay, a place I’d definitely recommend visiting. Although there are only two pubs listed in GBG for Poole there were many more that could easily be included, but I suppose like Hull & E. Yorkshire it’s hard judging for the limited allocated spaces. I knew this was going to be a long day so I stuck to halves and visited several pubs including the Brewhouse (the Milk Street brewery Taphouse), the Rope & Anchor where I had Wadworth Swordfish ale, a strong tasting but very pleasant rum infused ale, King Charles (GBG entry), Poole Arms (GBG entry) a small and very busy adult only seafood bar with five very nice ales a pub I highly recommend visiting, Portsmouth Hoy, The Quay, Jolly Sailor and Lord Wimborne. I certainly don’t envy the local branch when it comes to surveying for GBG as they were all of extremely high quality, I will certainly visit Poole again just to try the remaining pubs I missed out.

Bournemouth was a place I was looking forward to but i didn’t have much time so only managed a few pubs starting with Moon in the Square, one of the first Wetherspoon pubs and although I’m not a massive ‘spoons’ fan it is probably one of my favourite Wetherspoons I’ve been in, Mary Shelley (another very decent Wetherspoons), Brasshouse, Brewhouse & Kitchen (a lot smaller version to the one in Southbourne) finishing at Poole Hill Brewery (below) another Taphouse for

another very friendly bar run by a Canadian lady who is very passionate about ales. It was on this visit where I discovered a new app called the ‘real ale finder’, fairly new on the market and free to download I found it very useful to find what ales the listed pubs are selling.

One last visit I had was only 15 minutes’ walk from where I was staying at The Oak Inn and that was Drop the Anchor brewery, I had wanted to get there for weeks but they only open their tap room on weekends when I was working. On one of my last weeks I managed to swap shifts and get there on the Friday teatime, I was not disappointed. Although it is only a small micro brewery it has a very popular tap room. Several of their ales have won awards at CAMRA beer festivals along the south coast and I can see why. My favourites were ‘Silent Stones’ a traditional bitter and ‘Priest Hole’ Porter a very pleasant easy drinking porter. I managed to negotiate a deal and bring back a cask of each of these and they will be on sale at Hop ‘n’ Vine in Hull.

Over the two months I’ve spent here I’ve tried some exceptional local ales and visited some very friendly pubs and made some good friends along the way. If you are trying to decide your next British holiday or short break away and you like trying different local brews then this beautiful part of the south coast is well worth visiting.

On my last week I had one more spare day and that was spent in Winton just by Bournemouth where I found two micro pubs on the same

street. The Silverback Ale House which was very friendly with a selection of five real ales from both local breweries and those further afield, I spent 90 minutes in here waiting for the other bar to open the Micro Moose (below)

WASSAILLING FROM CAROL JOHNSON Twenty one of us braved the weather for the Branch Wassail trip to Sledmere House and Gardens. We got there a little early, so the shop’s cider and the café’s coffee and cake were very welcome. Two groups of Morris men from Hull and Sledmere did many a dance with their sticks and flags, jingling bells, with everyone hand clapping and laughing.

About half of us went to the Triton pub (below) in the village for a drink, some warmth and a meal, which they enjoyed as the pub was full.

We went from there to Driffield where the weather was warmer, we dispersed and went to nearly all the public houses in Driffield. The Butchers Dog was full of people drinking and talking in a very pleasant atmosphere, we had Whistle Stop at the right temperature and clear.

Selena had a photo with the Green Man (above) who represents the Earth. He led a procession with flaming torches down to the walled garden apple orchard. Here hot mulled cider was given away by the Colemans Cider Company, it was very warming on a cold snowy day.

We dipped toast in cider and put it on trees to bless them for a great crop next year, and to feed the birds as well, we sang songs read poems and shouted Wassail!

The Tiger (above) was also full of locals who made us very welcome as long they could see the football on the telly. We met a local who showed us to the Mariners Arms a GBG 2019 pub just off the main street. We drank Golden Girl, which was in excellent condition.

Other pubs in Driffield Spread Eagle and the Star are both sports orientated but provided even more choice. We all met up again and ended the day in Benjamin Fawcett, a Wetherspoons.

From there we eventually made our way back to the coach and wended our way home tired but happy.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR A group of sixteen members went on the mystery trip on a cold and blustery day. We had a cheerful driver who said he didn’t know where he was going, I gave him the post codes but he really played along with the mystery. We also enjoyed the breath- taking scenery, you could see right across the Vale of York, the wind dropped and the sun came out, it was stunning.

Bay Horse, Burythorpe (above) was the first, I had given silly clues to all the places we were going to. This was - bury the horse in the bay.

We arrived 11-30 and were made very welcome

by Vito and Abbie. It’s a very rustic pub with low beams, log fire, quirky small rooms with a very good flow.

The beers are from All Hallows Brewery which they brew at Goodmanham. We stayed for an hour and had a very pleasant stay.

The driver went down some very narrow and windy roads and hills and looked lost, but he was playing the game.

The Gait, Millington (above) was our next stop, another small village pub that was full of people eating and drinking. We rather filled the place so we went into the back room where we could sit and chatter in peace and enjoy our pints. A wide selection of real ale included and two LocAles.

St Vincent Arms, in Sutton on Derwent (above) was the next destination; clue -sow the seed in the church, there was much head scratching and laughing or groaning. Again it is a village food led pub with lots of rooms and a good array of hand pulls about 8 including Fullers London Pride, York Guzzler and Old Peculier Most people had never been there so it was a popular choice to visit.

Then to Pocklington, to the Black Bull, the Feathers, in the Market Place and the Tap with a brewery a mile up the road. The Black Bull

(above) was busy with locals watching rugby. and they had three real ales. We dispersed among the pubs, shops and quaint alley ways which are well worth a visit and a stop for lunch

they all got it. The staff were very welcoming it is a traditional pub with a log fire and a lot of regulars we had a good time talking to them and had very pleasing pints of Lancaster Bomber, Wainwrights and 1 LocAle. The last leg of the mystery was - a picnic in the wood, which was to Tokenspire, Woodmansey and the East Yorkshire Brew Company.

Steve laid on food and took us for a look around the brewery as there is no such thing as a free lunch we wound the handle to put labels on

bottles. Steve names his beers after long lost pubs such as Earl De Grey, The Earl IPA. Full Measure English Porter is a vanilla porter. It went down very well and at ÂŁ2.50 it was a bargain. It was a perfect end to a perfect day; and so to home, looking forward to the 4th mystery trip next year.

BRADFORD BRANCH BEER FESTIVAL & SALTAIRE It had been a while since I last visited the glorious World Heritage site of Saltaire. When I had the opportunity to visit Bradford’s Festival which is held in the splendour of the Victoria Hall I took it.

The building itself is one of the communal buildings originally set up to support the workers of Salts Mill. It has several functions rooms of varying sizes, three of these were used for the festival housing the racking for beers. Because it was divided over three rooms it looked less, but there were around 150 casks to choose from. It also provided an opportunity to see more of the building.

From there it was an all too brief visit the Cap and Collar, which had just opened when I was last there - around four years ago. I particularly enjoyed Wavelength from Turning Point there. And it was indeed refreshing to enjoy conversation with very knowledgeable and passionate people. Round the corner to what is now known as Salt Cellar, formerly the Victoria, it’s recent refurbishment has made it more in line with the other pubs in the area.

Don’t Tell Titus provided me with some tasty food and Saltaire beer in excellent condition.

Although it was opposite the festival venue and became quite cramped. From there I went on to Fanny’s, as busy and as popular as ever with drinkers spilling out into the road.

I chose randomly and was not disappointed with anything; it was a refreshing change as most of the beer was local to the area and not what you see in Hull and surrounding towns and villages.

Saltaire may be a little too far away for some to visit, travelling by train, it takes just a little over an hour and a half. But it is a world away and so charming I have never been disappointed and will visit again before too long I’m sure.

Tuesday was a slightly less frantic start but was none the less busy with more preparations being carried out and a seemingly endless flow of beer casks, bottles and cartons of cider too. Dispensing equipment was cleaned in preparation. As the day progressed spiles knocked into casks when they were ready. By the end of the day the bar tops were on and the hand pumps were being attached.

I had been a member of CAMRA for a few years but never been actively involved. I had been to the Hull Beer Festival over the years and enjoyed it, especially when it was held in Hull Minster. Then in 2017 I was on a career break and decided dip my toe in the water and volunteer for the festival which was held late that year due to building work. A little bit of time ‘back stage’ helping to set it up and then the odd session seemed like an interesting addition to the week’s usual activities.

Wednesday by comparison was a little more relaxed the place was starting to look like a beer festival now; handpumps were connected and casks in the gravity bar were tapped. We were so far ahead of schedule I could have a guilt free afternoon off at home.

Thursday started well. I was instructed to help test the beers to ensure that they were in good condition. This is a bit like a wine tasting but without the spitting out! By now I was chilled and ready for the start.

First thing Monday was unloading the van.

Volunteers had ensured it was packed with items from storage so we could get a flying start. The first thing that struck me was that there was a lot of it as racking and wooden frames and bar tops seemed to just keep coming. The first task of the day was to start building the bars. The racking for the gravity bar went up quickly followed by the serving bar which is screwed together using a vertical framework with kick boards and a bar surface.

The hand pulled bar is slightly different in that the bar tops cannot be fitted until most of the beer has been located underneath. Meanwhile the van went off to make another collection this time of hand pumps and other equipment.

After volunteering to cover the ‘odd session’ I ended up working two full days on reception.

This entailed meeting and greeting people, which is important when there were queues, attaching wristbands, taking payment and handing out glasses and Festival guides. Not a great lot to do, but important none the less and tiring when its 11 hours minus the occasional comfort break. Beers appeared regularly which was welcome but not so many to affect our concentration. Time seemed to fly by and I was happy to continue working but any help is welcomed by the organisers even if your commitments mean that you are only able to cover a 4 hour shift.

I confess I felt like a fish out of water at times and generally just pitched in and took instructions from those members who had been through it all and knew what they were doing. There was no shortage of experience, you just had to ask and listen to instructions. By late Monday afternoon the beer was starting to arrive and so came the heavy lifting part, with Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

On Saturday I was at Hull City so I only came back as the day was winding down. Once the public was gone there was a concerted effort to tidy up and get the church in a state suitable for Sunday worship. There was now a bit of the ‘after the Lord Mayor’s parade’ feel about the

FROM PETE FLEMING place and exhausted staff had the chance to relax with a last beer or two form those casks that were not completely empty. This was not the end though.

Monday came and we had to do it all in reverse, moving empty casks ready for collection, dismantling bars and racking and packing it all into the van and then putting it back into storage.

In 6 months time we would do it all again, when the 2018 Festival returned to its regular slot in April, and I was already looking forward to it.

You may think why volunteer to help at the Festival? Well there is great camaraderie amongst the members, who range in age, experience and capability. Experience doesn’t matter, the organisers will always find something that you can do to help. You also

get more insight into the world of beer from the other (wrong) side of the bar and I have learnt a lot this way. Whilst there is no pay as such volunteers are rewarded with a token for each hour worked which can be exchanged for a half of beer or cider. Then there is the rather smart staff tee shirt which is truly limited edition and should be continued to be worn as a badge of honour in future. All through the set up I saw a parade of shirts covering a number of years.

Finally there is the staff ‘thank you’ bus trip which happens a few weeks later. Tony has bought two wooden firkin casks made by Alastair Simms, Master Cooper at Yorkshire Cooperage. These are proving popular and in high demand across the region notably at the Jubilee Rooms in Bradford and is supplying on a permanent basis Neil’s metric firkins (11 Gallons) wood casks at the Junction in Castleford. Tony also brewed one of the festival beers for York CAMRA’s Knavesmire beer festival a collaboration with Brown Cow. This went on to win its class and is a top beer. Two beers that are now part of the stable are Port Out, a porter at 4.6% and Mount Hood Pale at 4.2%.

The others are Elevation: a 6.2% abv IPA; Summit: a session IPA at 3.6% abv; Chalk Stream: a 4% abv blonde ale; Ridgeway: a 5.5% abv Oatmeal Stout and Brook: a 4.3% abv pale ale. Although Mark is still aiming to expand the network of pubs he trades with, his ales have been seen in a number of pubs in Hull and East Yorkshire over the last 6months. It has to be said that this has been an impressive start to a new brewery and we look forward to watching its progress.

However, our experience in the brewing business is that brewers stick together and we were still able to do a cuckoo brew with our good friends at the Airheads brewery In our first year, we produced 15,000 pints of beer from 14 different syles, 7 of which were different beers.but next year we promise to do much much more.” As reported by the brewery
