Newsletter for the Alumnae & Friends of St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls

FALL 2013

Welcome Home, Dr. Walls! Dear First, Bambies on the Beach, in August, was the first event I attended in my role as Principal. It was a wonderful way to return to the school that gave me so much love, experience and support. After receiving the appointment over the summer, I told people that I was going “back to the future”. I am in awe that I was given this opportunity to return to Catholic education. It is exciting to be part of the momentum that you helped ignite not only for St. Hubert but for the entire Archdiocese. Your support speaks of your appreciation of the education you received. An education that had the freedom to develop the whole person – mind, body and soul. Catholic education’s success is due to the attention given to school climate and culture. The climate addresses the environment that enables a student to learn in a safe and positive atmosphere. The culture is the core of the school; identity filled with tradition. Our Catholic identity is ever present and continues to be a priority in such ways as Daily Mass each morning, Monthly Mass for the entire student body (I am still getting used to the fact that everyone can be accommodated in the Auditorium), Weekly Benediction and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the important and daily presence of Father Ronald Check, our School Minister. All of these essential pieces enhance and inspire both the climate and culture of our beloved St. Hubert. It is the participation versus the exposure that is such a powerful force that is felt throughout each day. Our students are truly “women of faith and integrity”. You will be proud to have them join your Alumnae ranks. Thank you for your encouragement and your many outwards displays of welcome. I look forward to future events and upcoming editions of Re-Echoings as I will enjoy sharing my experiences with you. Sincerely,

Joanne H. Walls, Ed.D. Principal

Be a Class Captain! St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls

Are you looking for a unique way to support St. Hubert? We are hoping to appoint a Class Caption for each graduating class. Class Captains will assist in disseminating information about events, reunions, school news, etc. directly to their classmates as well as attend a Captain’s Conclave, hosted by President Farrell, each year where Class Captions will meet, socialize and get the inside scoop on what’s happening at St. Hubert. If you’d like to volunteer to be the Class Caption for your graduating year, contact Robin Skubin Nolan ’90 at 215-624-6840 x233 or rnolan@huberts.org.

Chapel Restoration and Improvements

Much needed improvements to our Campus Ministry facilities and resources began in January. New vestments and an altar Crucifix were purchased in the Spring and new flooring and complete painting restoration were completed over the Summer. Also, we recently launched a campaign to restore the ceramic Stations of the Cross that have adorned the walls of our quaintly beautiful school chapel for many decades. If you would like to dedicate a Station in a loved one’s name by making a donation, please contact Rev. Ronald Check at 215-624-6840 ext. 247 or fathercheck@huberts.org. The cost to dedicate a Station is $75 and includes a bronze plaque which will be engraved with your personal message.

2013 Distinguished Graduates

We hope that you will join us on Sunday, December 8th for the Communion Breakfast (see bottom of page) as we honor the 2013 Distinguished Graduates Grace Bower Allely ’62 and Charlene Hughes Ritchie ’70 (pictured below in their Senior Yearbook photos). Grace Bower Allely ‘62 Grace excelled in her typing and shorthand classes at St. Hubert which served her well after she graduated. Not only did she go to work for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania one week after graduating, but she aced the shorthand test at Bell Telephone and was rewarded with a higher salary. Grace married Bill Allely in 1967. They were married 42 years before Bill passed away after a long battle with prostate and bone cancer. Grace is blessed with two wonderful daughters, two sonsin-law, five grandchildren and two step-grandsons. After leaving Bell Telephone in 1970 to focus on raising her family, Grace returned to full time work in 1989 with the State of New Jersey. She remained there until her retirement in August of 2008. Originally a member of the Alumnae Board in 1965, Grace remained on the Board until 1977 when she became active at St. Michael the Archangel (her daughters’ school). Grace happily returned to the Alumnae Board in 1988 and has since served on many committees as well as participated in all reunions for the Class of 1962. She has made many friends through her years on the Alumnae Board and her involvement is an important and special part of her life.

Since then, she has chaired or co-chaired several events and is delighted to be reunited with old friends on the Alumnae Board and enthusiastically welcomes young alumnae who want to be involved. Charlene is forever grateful to all the good sisters and lay teachers at St. Hubert who made her one of many women of faith
