Sydney United 58 Progress to Round of 16

Adelaide Croatia was denied by a hardworking Vipers to seal the league title with a game to spare going down 3-2 at Apex Stadium. Both sides with everything to play for, Vipers knowing a win will seal their status in State League 1 and Croatia playing for the title, the game was tense from the onset.

Craig Shearer opened the scoring on the 20-minute mark, �irst to pounce inside the box and tap the ball past John Solari. Croatia trying to force the equaliser were well held by Vipers heading into half time.

Gus Williams equalised for Croatia after being played through on goal, blasting the ball into the top right hand corner from close range. An arm wrestle ensued with both sides scoring from penalties in the 67th and 69th minute, Ricardo Da Silva equalising for Croatia. Just as Croatia started to get a stronghold on the game, disaster struck on the 73rd minute. An early drive cross was , cut out by Omari Didero, however the ball ricochet off him and passed Solari for an own goal. Rhys Thompson with minutes to spare, missed from point blank range as Vipers goalkeeper Jose Lartiga’s spectacular re�lexes denied Croatia.

Fortunately for Croatia the title is still in their hands, team’s resilience, determination, and ability to rise to the occasion.
