Athletes' Commission for future generations Upon accepting the IOC's recommendations on the role of top athletes in Olympic movement and society, the Croatian Olympic Committee founded on July 9th, 2012 the Athletes’ Commission as a separate COC body. With three votes in the Assembly the Athletes’ Commission represents, besides the Croatian Olympians Club which also has three representatives and three votes, a strong message that the athletes can and should be, in many ways, bearers of the Olympic standard for future generations. Among other things, the Commission would deal with athletes’ education issues during their active career but also after retirement, ethical issues concerning competitions, judging decisions, fair play relations, discrimination and violence in sports, doping and numerous other interdisciplinary activities and impacts of the COC in the Croatian society. At the constituent meeting held on October 11th in Zagreb the swimmer Gordan Kozulj, four-times Croatian Olympian (Beijing Olympics 2008, Athens Olympics 2004, Sydney Olympics 2000 and Atlanta Olympics 1996) and member of the European Athletes’ Commission, was elected for its president. The Athletes’ Commission has 11 members, of which, besides the President Kozulj, six athletes are representatives for summer Olympic sports - Sandra Mandir (basketball), Mirjana Miskovic (judo), Snjezana Pejcic (archery), Marin Cilic (tennis), Zlatko Horvat (handball) and Josip Pavic (water polo; two for winter Olympic sports - Natko Zrncic Dim (skiing) and Andrijana Stipanicic Mrvelj (biathlon), and two representatives for non-Olympic sports - Ana Maria Celan (karate) and Istvan Varga (dance sport). Besides Kozulj, by function member of the Assembly and the COC Council, the Assembly members are Andrijana Stipanicic Mrvelj and Istvan Varga. TEN SOLIDARITY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SOCHI 2014 IOC’s Olympic Solidarity awarded scholarships to ten Croatian candidates for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2012. Scholarship recipients are: Jurica Veverac (biathlon), Darija Obratov (sledding), Andreja Komic, Sasa Trsinski, Istok Rodes, Sofija Novoselic and Filip Zubcic (alpine skiing), Edi Dadic and Andrej Buric (crosscountry skiing) and Anja Stefan (snowboard). Scholarships in the amount of 1500 USD per month will be provided from November 2012 until February 2014. BISERKA VRBEK IN EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE EUROPEAN FAIR PLAY MOVEMENT The Olympian Biserka Vrbek (Los Angeles Olympics 1984) and sports official, since 2007 Assistant to the Secretary General of the Croatian Olympic Committee, was elected member of the Executive Board of the European Fair Play Movement (EFPM) on EFPM's Electoral Assembly held on October 27th 2012 in Verona. By this election her personal reputation in international fair play circles was confirmed, as well as the impact of COC in planning the development of fair play movement in Europe, whose co-founder in 1994 is exactly the COC. Biserka Vrbek is a respected member and coordinator of the Croatian Fair Play Committee since 2006, and in 2012 she was the leading coorganizer of the Fair Play Congress hosted by the HFPO (Croatian Fair Play Committee) and the City of Porec. Since 2009 Biserka Vrbek is also a member of the Executive Board of the European Shooting Federation (ESC).
