Zlatko Mateša elected unanimously for another term At the 57th Electoral Session held on 5 October at Zagreb’s hotel Westin, Zlatko Mateša was elected - by unanimous decision of members of the Assembly - to lead the Croatian Olympic Committee in the next four-year term (2020-2024). After the elections were called, the Croatian Olympic Committee received only the former President's candidacy. Mateša is the longest-serving President of the Croatian Olympic Committee, first elected to lead the National Olympic Association in 2002. Before him, the Croatian Olympic Committee was led by Antun Vrdoljak (1991-2000) and Zdravko Hebel (2000-2002). The Vice Presidents of the Croatian Olympic Committee remained the same: Sanda Čorak, Morana Paliković Gruden, Željko Jerkov and Damir Martin. Ivo-Goran Munivrana, Željan Konsuo, Zlatko Taritaš, Boris Mesarić, Branimir Bašić, Miho Glavić and Damir Knjaz remained in the Croatian Olympic Committee’s Council, with newly elected Dragan Primorac, Ivan Veštić and Anto Baković, followed by Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović as member of the Council according to IOC membership. Due to the fairer representation of sports and the volume of work, a subsequent increase in the number of members of the Croatian Olympic Committee’s Council was also announced. New members of the Croatian Olympic Committee' Supervisory Board are Ivan Jelenčić, Stjepan Krznarić, Goran Kovačić, Fernando Kirigin and Romeo Vrečko, while Nika Fleiss, Nikša Skelin, Dario Šimić, Ivica Veselić and Nataša Vezmar were elected to the Ethics Committee. New Chinese-Croatian Sports Cooperation Agreement Through video conference that took place in mid-September, the representatives of the Croatian Table Tennis Federation (HSTS) and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Croatia agreed one-year continuation of the Chinese-Croatian sports cooperation, mediated by the President of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Mateša. The video conference was held in the premises of the Croatian Olympic Committee and, besides Mateša, the conference was attended by the President of the Croatian Table Tennis Federation (HSTS) Zlatko Pospiš and HSTS Director Renato Čengić, Head of the Sports System Support Department at the Croatian Ministry of Tourism and Sports Martina Jeričević and former Croatian Table Tennis Head Coach Tian Yuan, still an active player and coach. The Head of the Croatian Table Tennis Federation Pospiš thanked the Chinese Embassy for financial and expert sports assistance, reminding that in 2019 four Chinese table tennis coaches visited Croatia and very much popularized that sport. The President of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Mateša praised this act of cooperation with China, emphasizing that the said fifteen-year-long cooperation reached such a level that Chinese handball players, with Croatian support, participate in the SEHA league. He also praised - as extremely valuable – the way how table tennis knowledge is being passed from China to Croatia. The other party in this video conference was the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Croatia, Her Excellency Xe Erven, who pointed out the excellent cooperation between China and Croatia in almost all areas of social activity, including sports. Government co-finances construction and reconstruction of sport infrastructure On 12 October 2020, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports signed 23 agreements on co-financing the construction, renovation and equipping of sports facilities in 2020, with a total value of HRK 9,684,096.94. The agreements were signed by Minister Nikolina Brnjac and mayors, chiefs and county prefects of local and regional communities to whom the funds were allocated after the public call was carried out. Minister Brnjac pointed out that in the past three years the construction, i.e., renovation of 25 sports facilities in total amount of HRK 31 million has been co-financed, and the first major project was the construction of athletics track in Knin in 2018, the first-ever circular athletics track of the Šibenik-Knin County. "Thanks to that project, today we are proud to see Marko Čeko build his golden successes on that track. Namely, our young athlete decided to stay in Knin even though he had offers from the United States of America because, as Marko himself pointed out several times, he has got everything he needs in the homeland. And this is the greatest reward for all of us", said Minister Brnjac, adding that the successes of top athletes are just the icing on the cake, stressing out that sports facilities are foreseen for all the citizens of Croatia.
