Teacher at Tyson
Continued from Page #6 went with the mechanics and technicians who work on the equipment
"They have their room downstairs where they work on these machines, but upstairs it's a classroom setting " said Hayward "They have labs where technicians can learn to work on different tools and machines. They have another room with all of these computers where they watch videos on the training and take quizes. They get hired on, but are still going through training on-site."
Tyson didn't let Hayward on the line to handle the meat without proper training due to safety regulations While she was in the room and seeing the process, laws prevented her from getting too involved in the full operation
"Even though I was scrubbed in properly and all that, it was a big concern." said Hayward. "They would pull samples off of the line and show me, but it wasn't anything that actually went through.
The program consisted of three full days in the plant (Tuesday through Thursday. Monday was an introduction and Friday was a luncheon and wrap-up session

"I went from 8 am to 4 pm each day, so it was long " said Hayward "One time I got passed from person to person and I didn't get a lunch break That day was really long "
At Tyson Foods, the temperature in the building is really cold due to the handling and processing of meat Hayward said that workers told her it is the best place to be in August in Texas.
"It was just kind of interesting to see how it all comes together." said Hayward. "It almost functions like a small little city the way it all operates. They even have nurses on staff there "
Hayward says that taking what she learned back to the classroom is a little more challenging for biology She said that if she were teaching math, then she could tell them about the different quanities and calculating production
"In biology, with the Quality Assurance, that's the one that resonated the most " said Hayward "They have to keep the meat at a certain temperature and they have calculate in ground beef how much fat compared to not enough fat And then there are preservatives that they have to apply and there is science behind all of that."
Hayward made the comparison of biology lab safety to factory safety measurements. Safety procedures are going to have to be followed at any level
