Kailey Hayward spent a week working at Tyson Foods, Inc last summer during one of her few summer weeks off in order to benefit the students of Howe ISD

Nearly a year ago, Bob Rhoden, Director of External Relations at Workforce Solutions Texoma presented a program to the Howe City Council that would send one Howe ISD teacher through the partnership program knows as BET (Business Education for Teachers)
Teachers will go to a local manufacturing location and learn hands-on skills in the workforce in order to have true first-hand knoweledge of what life is like in the workforce for students that may enter the workforce just out of high school
Before entering the program, the teachers were asked what they'd like to get out of it. Hayward told DDA (Denison Development Alliance), "I want to get ideas from the working world, and show my students how their lessons will
Teachers that participated spent a week at local industries such as Ruiz Food Products, NOVO1/Dialog Direct, Caterpillar Global Mining, LLC , Tyson Foods, Inc , Presco Products, City of Denison, Grayson County, Emerson Process Management - Fisher Controls, PTF Insulation Fabricators, ACS Manufacturing, Inc , National Government Services Champion Cooler Corporation, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital - WNJ, and Denison Industries
Hayward said that Howe High School Principal Michael Smiley approached her and asked if she would be interested in the program. Hayward, a biology teacher, fit the criteria of math or science that the program calls for.
"After getting a little information on it, such as getting to work in an industry, I said, hey, I'll give it a try" said Hayward
On the first day of the program, the teachers gathered with the program administrators and learned about what to expect They also learned their job placement
"Tyson requested someone from Howe or Sherman since they have a lot of employees from there " said Hayward "Sherman didn't participate, so I found out pretty quickly that I was going there "
Tyson Foods gave her a tour of the facility and she quickly learned what most people don't know - Tyson Foods in Sherman does not handle chicken The local plant in Sherman is the home of the pork and beef operation
"They gave me and overview and how you have to scrub up to go on the floor and how you have to dress and all of the different layers you have to put on." said Hayward.
The rest of week, she was working with different departments, but she spent a lot of the time with Quality Assurance
They talked about what they have to check for and meet all of their regulations." said Hayward. "I never thought that they had to go to the local stores "
During the week, Walmart in Sherman called the plant about some meat that they thought might be suspect quality because the packaging was different Hayward went along with the Quality Assurance team to Walmart to inspect the product
"It was like a case investigation " said Hayward "They took all of these pictures That was pretty neat. You don't think that this big plant is distributing to the store right beside it. You think it's got to go through all of these steps, but it really doesn't."
Hayward then spent time with the safety director and learned the safety procedures After that, she continued on Page #9
