Letter from the Editor ON THE COVER
Puppies & Kittens...Oh My!
When not hosting Great Day Houston, Deborah Duncan loves to cuddle (with 4-leggers!). Julie Kuenstle of Houston SPCA had the awesome job of animal wrangling, which...who wouldn't want that job, right? A big thank you to Deborah for her time and to Julie and her team for bringing us the cutest supermodels ever for our cover shot. Read more from Deborah and our other media personalities in our 14th Annual Media Hounds feature story. And remember, the Houston SPCA is full of adoptables looking for a forever home, so if you are looking for a new soulmate, give them a visit. Cover and Feature Photos: Allison Wilkins Photography
Welcome to year 14 of an annual tradition, our Media Hounds issue where we feature local media personalities and their pets. This tradition began 14 years ago with KHOU’s David Paul as our cover model. David is one of the biggest animal lovers I know and I always enjoy hearing his stories of rescuing animals (including kittens from drain pipes). His story led to the idea of featuring local media personalities in PetTalk because so many are animal enthusiasts. Plus, through their voice, TV presence, or written word, they help communicate important information to our city regarding animal related issues. We figured this is a great way to say thank you to our Media Hounds while letting our readers learn more about them and their furry friends.
A Houston fan favorite, Deborah Duncan of KHOU's Great Day Houston graciously agreed to be our cover model. As an avid animal lover, she wanted to take the opportunity to promote animal adoption by posing with cuddly puppies and kittens from the Houston SPCA. I LOVE the cover photo captured by Allison Wilkins...you can see that Deborah is in her element! And wait until you see her feature story photo–equally adorable! We appreciate all of our Media Hounds and we know you will enjoy learning more about them and their pets in our feature story. These journalists often get up in the middle of the night to go to work and I'm so impressed that, not only can they function with such odd hours, but they do it so well! I also want to give a shout out of thanks to the beautiful McKinley in Memorial City for allowing us to photograph at their
luxury high-rise property.
Also in the issue, you'll find some great health articles including the amazing nature of the human-animal bond by Dr. Erica Sandberg of Blue Pearl Pet Hospice, as well as an interesting article on an uncommon topic, Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis (eDKA) in Cats, by Dr. Noaker of VERGI 24/7. We also can't wait for you to meet the winner, "Springer", of our annual Beach Bum photo contest sponsored by Sand 'N Sea Properties Galveston. Check it out on page 18, plus see the finalists and other entries enjoying fun in the sun. The photos show how much our pups love the sea air and wide open spaces, which is a reminder to take your pup on more beach trips to Galveston! And, don't forget to enter your pet in our annual Halloween photo contest. Get those spooky goblins dressed to win! See page 25 to learn more. Plus, be sure to enter our current contest celebrating our 25th anniversary: 25 Reasons My Pet Is Adorable. We know there are more than 25 reasons but it just fits the anniversary theme LOL! The contest is sponsored by Wright Pawn & Jewelry, who is offering a great prize so be sure to enter on our website at HoustonPetTalk.com or from the link in our newsletter (sign up for our bi-monthly newsletter on the website).
I'm so glad it's September...it's my birthday month which means I get to spend time with my family, I get to scream loudly at Aggie football games, and the heat index goes down...all good things! I wish you a joyful September too!

Henrietta On:
On “Being On The Other Side”
When Dragon Lady announced she thought addressing the idea of "crossing over" would be a good topic for my column, I smugly noted that she should “let dead dogs lie." But as usual, my humor didn’t faze her tefloninspired face. “Henrietta, this is not a topic for levity” she spatted. I know, I know…you feel compassion for me having to live with a fire-breathing monster but I try to always look on the bright side: it’s better than living with Simon Cowell, Justin Bieber, Kanye West or Charlie Sheen.
I really was gobsmacked that DL wanted me to write my column on this dreadfully depressing subject. On my first try, I came up with a sonnet that began, “As I lay lifeless on my bed, I’m trying to make a rhyme with the word dead."
“HENRIETTA!!!!
I AM WARNING YOU”. Geez, it was just a joke.
Ok, I suppose if I want to ever eat, shop, or possibly even breathe again, I better put something together that DL will find acceptable.
years back, Hortense had a little “misfortune” and wound up dead…for a few minutes. If it had been up to cousin Harold, her brother, she would have stayed dead but that’s another story. If you recall from past musings that I’ve shared,
quite coiffured, prim and proper when in public but apparently she’s not so reserved at home. She got a little frisky and decided to play the underwear game with her human dad when he was on the toilet. Essentially, her human wears tighty whities and when he is on the toilet, Hortense gets mischievous and grabs his underwear and pulls at them when they are down around his ankles. Unable to get up and chase her and make her stop, he
flying backwards and smashed into the shower wall, breaking the glass and her head. There she lay, dead with underwear hanging from her mouth. She was “dead” for a few minutes but revived by said human dad with CPR.
cousin
So, after a few head scratches and a squirrel chasing recess, I settled on a fabulous idea - talk to cousin Hortense about her heavenly experience. A few
Hortense is, shall we say, prone to pretense. She is still the joke of the town for walking into the Piggly Wiggly and asking for the “crudite isle” when shopping for vegetables.
Back to the story. Hortense is
gets super red-faced mad which in turn just spurs Hortense on. Well, on a fateful night during one of Hortense’s escapades, apparently dad’s tighty whities were a bit threadbare and gave way to her intense grip. They ripped in two and Hortense went
During her death, Hortense experienced a little peak into what doggy heaven looks like. She was also so mortified by the way in which she “died” that she was determined to come back to life just so the gossip hounds would not fall into fits of giggles every time her name was mentioned for eternity.
So, you must be wondering what she saw beyond the pearly gates. First and foremost of interest to moi, was the fact there were NO CATS in heaven! So now we know where the term "Hell Cats" comes from. Next, dogs were sitting on couches everywhere, garbage cans were open season and squirrels were not very fast. Yes, it’s a lovely place. So to all my compadres out there, don’t fear the other side. It’s a party without human intervention, there are no leashes, the smell of bacon is EVERYWHERE and you can scratch anywhere you like anytime you want. So, here is my message to you: Imf you beat me there, save me a seat on the couch!

Have you ever stopped to think about how much information we receive from local media regarding petrelated information? If there is an animal abuse case or pets in need from a flooding disaster, our news media shares the story and even tells us where we can adopt the survivors. Various radio stations and television shows highlight adoptable animals weekly. And, many of our news media and TV personalities volunteer their time and talent to emcee pet events throughout the year.
Houston, like other big cities, has a pet overpopulation problem that is staggering. Animals are euthanized weekly in our city and it’s a constant struggle for those of us that want to change this disheartening paradigm to find ways to turn these tragedies into heartwarming rescue stories.
Here in the Bayou City, we are fortunate to have MANY media outlets and personalities that are dedicated to making a positive impact on improving the outlook for our stray, abandoned and neglected animals. In our 14th annual Media Hounds issue, we at Houston PetTalk want to take time to thank Houston’s Media for their willingness to highlight pet information by showcasing a cross section of media personalities that deserve our gratitude. Each of our "hounds" are photographed with their "sidekicks" so you can see who they snuggle up to when they go home!
Enjoy learning more about these pet parents who have a "gift of word" that they use for the greater good.
DEBORAH DUNCAN
TV HOST, KHOU’S GREAT DAY HOUSTON with Adoptable Puppies and Kittens from Houston SPCA
TV personality, animal advocate, and allaround Houston icon, Deborah Duncan shares her favorite pet memories, life lessons from animals, and her love for the Bayou City. You may know her as the host of Great Day Houston on KHOU, but there’s a lot more to this media powerhouse—and her love of pets!
Q: Thank you for always being a stalwart advocate for Houston’s homeless pets. You truly give voices to this vulnerable population and you do it with pizazz. You have such a fun personality, so let’s start with some fun. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
A: I'd have an elephant. I need a bigger place!
Q: We can just picture you rolling up to the station on your elephant. Now that’s making an entrance! What pet organizations are near and dear to your heart?
A: Pet Set, Houston SPCA, CAP. I appreciate their never-ending battle to protect the animals and educate the humans.
Q: We couldn’t agree more. What’s the
most meaningful thing pets have taught you?
A: Even the smallest gestures can make you feel loved. Seriously, when a pet just offers an extended paw or gives a wet kiss, don't you feel good? Now go get them a steak!
Q: Truer words were never spoken. Pets have the best timing when it comes to comfort. Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
A: I started my life growing up across the street from a rice paddy in Taipei, Taiwan. We didn't understand why we couldn't ride the farmer's oxen!
Q: Wow! I bet most people don’t know that about you. That paints such a vivid picture! Childhood curiosity knows no bounds, especially when animals are involved. Why did you choose a job in media, and what do you love most about your work?
A: I attended five elementary schools. Every time we moved, I'd interview people right away in an effort to make friends before I had to move again. I love connecting people with anything that can make them smile, make life better, or
even save a life!
Q: We’ve seen that first had. It makes perfect sense, your warmth and curiosity clearly started young! What do you love most about Houston?
A: The world is here, as in every race, nationality, religion, and for the most part, we make it work. Failure isn't an option!
Q: That’s beautifully said. Houston truly is a global city with a big heart. What’s the funniest thing your pet has done?
A: My previous Jack Russell would leave toys and food in front of my cat's hiding place as a bribe to get her to play with him. She never fell for it. After all, he was a Jack Russell, AKA a ratter!
Q: That’s hilarious, and very strategic on his part. Too bad the cat wasn’t buying it! What’s your guilty pleasure?
A: Spending the whole day at home in mismatched pajamas, and pets don't care!
ANTHONY YANEZ
CHIEF METEOROLOGIST, KPRC with Houston and Harvey
You know him as the smiling face bringing you the forecast on KPRC 2, but off-camera, Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez is a proud pet parent. His crew includes four rescue cats and two sweet pups rescued during Hurricane Harvey (scan the QR code to read the heartwarming story).
Q: Tell us, if your pets had voices, what do you imagine they’d sound like?
A: We have four rescue cats at home and all of them have high pitched voices and they all complain. (Everyone in the family speaks for them). It’s really funny and I’m sure if we did it around others it would be weird. But our dogs never complain and are happy about everything.
Q: That sounds like a full-on feline comedy troupe! Do you support any animal welfare organizations and if so, in what way?
A: All of our rescues except two came from Red Collar Rescue. We love the work they do caring for hurting animals in our community. We donate annually. We also support Citizens for Animal Protection. Houston and Harvey did a great job walking the red carpet at their 2023 Gala.
Q: Houston and Harvey walking the red carpet? That’s star power! Speaking of red carpets, be honest… who’s more high-maintenance, you or your pets?
A: Me by a mile! My wife says there is only one diva in the house and she looks right at me when she says it.
Q: What’s the most meaningful thing your pet has taught you?
A: Havey has a way of knowing when things aren't going well. If anyone is ever upset or sad, he'll come and put his head on their knee and won't move. It's always very calming. He's a great dog!
Q: That kind of quiet understanding from a pet is pure magic. What’s your pet’s favorite toy or pastime? Any funny habits?
A: Houston loves small stuffed animals. When the kids were young, he would find the ones he really liked from their rooms and take them outside. When he’s in the back yard he’ll get one and carry it around in his mouth.
Do you have any funny pet-parent fails you’re willing to admit?
A: When we first got Houston, he chewed up the side of our couch. My wife sewed it back together hoping I wouldn’t notice. She did a great job but the problem was a cat got inside the couch. A strange meowing alerted us something was wrong. We had to cut the couch back open again to get the cat out. And that’s how I found out what Houston did.
NICK NATARIO
REPORTER,
ABC13 HOUSTON with Dalton
We caught up with ABC13’s Nick Natario to chat about his pup Dalton, life in Houston, and how a failed mascot career somehow led to a successful run in TV news (yes, really!).
Q: Nick, tell us about Dalton. What’s his favorite toy or pastime—and does he have any quirky habits?
A: Long walks aren't Dalton's favorite. What's his habit to avoid them? He hops into the bottom of my daughter's stroller.
Q: That’s genius, and a little lazy! What do you love most about Houston?
A: In times of need, Houstonians help each other. My first week at ABC13 was when Hurricane Harvey hit. I saw how Houstonians step up. That's stuck with me.
Q: What first drew you to a career in media?
A: I started working in media in middle school, calling high school games, and launching a school news program. In high school, I started to volunteer. In college, I saw how TV news blended those passions. I love working in TV and helping people at the same time.
Q: If Dalton had a voice, what would it sound like?
A: Although I don't consider Dalton to be a misfit, I imagine his voice sounds like Charliein-a-box from the Rudolph movie. There's something about Dalton's droopy ears that makes me believe he has a deep, raspy voice.
Q: Love that visual! Okay, spill, what’s something most people wouldn’t know about you?
A: I graduated with a broadcast degree but pursued a mascot career. Seriously. I performed as Otto at Syracuse University. It got me a AAA baseball mascot job. I later worked with the original Phillie Phanatic, Dave Raymond. However, I auditioned with the Tampa Bay Rays, but didn't get it, and Raymond fired me. So, I pursued TV news.
Q: Wait, you were a pro mascot?! That is gold. What about a funny pet-parent fail?
A: I thought it would be a great idea to have a baby and puppy at the same time. Big mistake! It's like raising two toddlers at once. Dalton's always looking to eat her toys, and she wants to ride him like a pony.
Q: Lastly, what’s something meaningful Dalton has taught you?
A: It's okay to grieve and take time to love. Dalton came into my life a few months after I lost my first dog, Jackson. At first, it was hard to grow attached to Dalton. That didn't stop him from loving me. As I grieved, he loved.
ILONA CARSON
KHOU ANCHOR
with Crumpet
You know Ilona Carson as KHOU’s bright and friendly morning anchor — but off-camera, she’s just a pet-loving, queso-snacking Houstonian with an adorable sidekick named Crumpet the Cavapoo. We caught up with her to talk guilty pleasures, dream pets, and why Crumpet might just be the cutest “cigar smoker” in town.
Q: Tell us, what’s Crumpet’s favorite toy?
A: It's a stuffed cigar my son bought for him on Temu. Maybe not the most healthy of toys, but it's great to see him walk around the house with a cigar hanging out of his mouth.
Q: I mean… a Cavapoo with a cigar? That’s sitcom material. What’s your guilty pleasure?
A: The Daily Mail, chips and queso.
Q: That’s the holy trinity of self-care, celebrity gossip, melty cheese, and salty chips. What made you choose a career in media, and what’s the best part?
A: My favorite aspect of my job is meeting people and learning how much we all have in common.
Q: That’s probably why viewers feel like they already know you, you’re basically having coffee with Houston every morning. If Crumpet could talk, what would he sound like?
A: He would sound like Sven the reindeer from the movie Frozen.
Q: We’re picturing a goofy, lovable voice paired with that cigar… perfection. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
A: A polar bear cub.
Q: Well, Crumpet better be ready to share his toys, though we have a feeling the polar bear might win tug-of-war. What do you do for fun?
A: I like to ride horses, bake, and cuddle with Crumpet.
Q: Sounds like the ultimate weekend! Tell us something most people wouldn’t know about you.
A: I'm a zookeeper! Along with Crumpet, we have a cat, two bunnies, three lizards and a snake.
Q: OK, so Crumpet’s not just a house dog, he’s running a whole animal kingdom. No wonder he needs that cigar. What’s the most meaningful thing Crumpet has taught you?
A: All I really need in life is a warm bed, good meal and love from my family.
CHAU NGUYEN
ON-AIR PANELIST (FOX26), GUEST HOST (HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA) with Butter
Chau Nguyen is a familiar face in Houston media and a trusted voice on issues of community and mental health. But at home, she’s simply Butter’s human. We chatted with Chau about life with her English Bulldog, her love for Houston, and how pets bring joy—and lessons—to our lives.
Q: So, Chau, let’s start with the most important question, what’s Butter’s favorite toy or pastime?
A: Hands down it’s her (now headless) stuffed “Grumpy Cat” doll. She sometimes will chew on it until she falls asleep. It’s her emotional support toy!
Q: Headless Grumpy Cat, now that’s a love story if we’ve ever heard one. If Butter could ask you a question, what would she want to know?
A: Can I please sleep on the bed with you? Pretty please!
Q: Butter clearly knows how to tug at the heartstrings. And what would you ask Butter if she could answer you?
A: Is there anything going on in the Bulldog head of yours?
Q: We'd pay good money to know the answer to that. Bulldogs always look like they’ve got some serious inner dialogue going on! Favorite treat?
A: Bully sticks for sure!
Q: Do you and Butter have a favorite patio spot around town?
A: We are big fans of Barnaby’s!
Q: Great choice! And you can pick up a copy of PetTalk while you’re there! You’ve been a voice in Houston media for years. What do you love most about this city?
A: As a Vietnamese immigrant, I love the diversity of our community!
Q: What originally attracted you to a career in media, and what do you enjoy most about it?
A: Sharing information and opinions in an informed, respectful way. I have loved the variety of stories covered over the years!
Q: It shows in your work. You’ve created space for meaningful conversation and perspective, which we admire. Changing gears, if you could have any superpower, what would it be?
A: Resilience! I have weathered many storms, and I do it with a lot of hope and optimism, and a lot of love from our pets! What would we do without them?!
BILL BARAJAS
KPRC ANCHOR with Bennie and Astro
We caught up with KPRC 2's Bill Barajas—reporter, storyteller, and proud dog dad for a fun chat about rescue pups, couch rules that don’t last, and who really rules the roost in their home (hint: it’s not Bill).
Q: You have animal lover written all over you Bill. Tell us how Bennie and Astro “found” you.
A: I found Bennie two years ago at the SPCA. I went to see another dog but felt drawn to keep looking. When I met Bennie, she sat on my lap, and I knew she was the one.
Astro’s story is a bit different. I wasn’t even looking for a dog, but while working on a story at BARC, someone came in and said they’d found him in a dumpster. He was skinny, wet, and scared. I called my fiancée and asked if she could foster him. She said yes, and Astro made himself right at home. After a few weeks, it was pretty clear he wasn’t going anywhere.
Q: Sounds like serendipity with both lucky pups. I’m sure you talk to your dogs all the time, if you could ask them a question, what would it be?
A: I’d have them settle a long-standing debate in our house: Who’s your favorite — your mom or me?
Q: Oh dear, I think someone would be sleeping on the couch that night! LOL. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: I’d want to fly so I could bring the pups along on every vacation with us.
Q: Any funny pet-parent fails you’re willing to admit?
A: We bought a brand-new couch and decided to keep the dogs off to keep it looking fresh. We lasted about a week — now it’s where we all hang out together.
Q: I think many of us have been there. If your pet had a social media account, what would it be like?
A: They do! Their account on insta @ Bennieandastro is mostly filled with pics and videos of them being goofy or play fighting. We love sharing our pups with the world.
Q: What attracted you to a career in media and what’s your favorite aspect of your job?
A: Growing up with my dad in the business, I was naturally drawn to storytelling and connecting with people. I thrive on uncovering important stories and sharing them in ways that inform and engage the community. What I cherish most is giving a voice to those who might not otherwise be heard.
CLAIRE GOODMAN
SENIOR REPORTER,
HOUSTON CHRONICLE with Tara
When she’s not covering stories for the Houston Chronicle, Claire Goodman is surrounded by a lively crew of rescue pets—including cats, dogs, and even reptiles! We sat down with her to talk about life with animals, pet-parenting mishaps, and what her pets have taught her.
Q: Claire, you have 12 pets?! That’s incredible. Tell us a little about how they found you.
A: I adopted Tara from Save Our Companion Animals–Fort Bend. I got my dogs from German Shepherd rescues, and I have several exotic pets that I adopted from reptile rescues. I always look to rescues first when considering a new pet.
Q: If your pets could talk, what do you think they’d ask you?
A: “Why do you go to work every day when you could stay home and play with us instead?”
Q: Fair question! Speaking of playtime, do you have a favorite Houston patio where you like to hang out with your pets?
A: No Label Brewing Co.—it has a great atmosphere, and they regularly host adoption events and fundraisers for animals.
Q: Sounds like a perfect place for pet lovers. Switching gears a bit—what inspired your career in media?
A: I was drawn to reporting because I love writing. But my favorite stories to write are the ones that have a meaningful impact on the community, either by affecting change or by raising awareness of an issue.
Q: We love that. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
A: I would keep anything as a pet that is statistically unlikely to kill me, which is how I ended up with so many pets.
Q: A practical philosophy—and clearly working well for you! Do you support any animal welfare groups?
A: I am a big supporter of animal rescue. I foster, help with fundraising endeavors, and I also emcee charity events for rescues.
Q: That’s amazing. Now tell us—any funny pet-parent fails?
A: I taught my German Shepherd puppy Maximus to swim, thinking it would be something fun for us to do together. Now he loves it so much that he dives right into our pool any time I let him outside. I have to dry off a 75-pound wet puppy all day, and my floors are never properly dry as a result of this terrible decision.
LAUREN ‘LO’ SESSIONS-BARKER
ASSISTANT PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND AFTERNOON DRIVE HOST OF THE LO SHOW ON 93Q COUNTRY with Stanley
Meet Lauren “LO” Sessions-Barker, the vibrant Assistant Program Director, Music Director, and voice behind the Afternoon Drive on The Lo Show at 93Q Country. When she’s not on-air sharing music and laughs with Houston listeners, LO is soaking up life with her best buddy, Stanley—a beach-loving, toy-carrying pup with a big personality and an even bigger heart. Together, they’re a dynamic duo who know how to mix fun, friendship, and a whole lot of unconditional love.
Q: What is Stanley’s favorite toy or pastime? Any funny habits?
A: Stanley’s favorite toys are his family of Lamb Chop plushies—he’s got probably 4 or 5 different ones. One of his funny habits is whenever he likes his dinner, he will bring one of his toys over to my husband or me to say, “thank you.”
Q: So basically, a fine-dining connoisseur with a flair for gift-giving. I love it! What’s the funniest thing Stanley has ever done?
A: Stanley has such a funny little personality and is constantly making my husband and me laugh. I’d say the funniest thing he’s done—and still does—is smile for pictures. He knows when the camera is on him, and he hams it up.
Q: A canine model in the making. Does he require his own lighting crew yet? If Stanley could ask you a question, what would it be?
A: He’d probably ask us when our next trip to the beach is going to be. Stanley LOVES the beach.
Q: I can already picture him with sunglasses and a tiny beach chair. If you could ask Stanley a question, what would it be?
A: I’d ask him who his favorite human is—me or his daddy...I unfortunately already know the answer. He’s a daddy’s boy.
Q: Brutal honesty from our four-legged friends—it’s part of their charm! What is Stanley’s favorite treat?
A: Stanley is a glutton for a peanut butter treat...or the last bite of a club sandwich.
Q: We’ve seen his adorable tricks, so those treats are well deserved! Switching gears—what attracted you to a career in media, and what’s your favorite aspect of your job?
A: I’ve been in the media industry almost 15 years, and the thing that attracted me to the field remains the same all these years later— being able to connect with my community through music. I love that I get to be a small part of someone’s day, and sometimes I get to be the highlight, which is so cool to me.
NICOLE MENDES
ESPN SOFTBALL ANALYST AND FOUNDER OF CHALKTALKS with Bingo
When Nicole Mendes isn’t busy breaking down softball plays as an ESPN Softball Analyst or running her sports media company, ChalkTalks, she’s hanging out with her fourlegged best friend, Bingo. We sat down with Nicole to talk patios, pet-parent fails, and why her dog sounds like a British detective.
Q: What is your pet’s favorite toy or pastime? Any funny habits?
A: Bingo has earned his nickname “co-pilot” because in the car, he props his front paws on the middle console and rests his chin on the driver’s shoulder, watching the road like he’s navigating. It is the cutest, funniest habit.
Q: Honestly, we’d trust him with Google Maps. Do you have a favorite restaurant patio in Houston that you visit with your Bingo?
A: Nettbar Shady Acres is one of my favorites. They’ve got a huge outdoor space, both covered and uncovered, TV screens everywhere, and on Thursdays, they have live music and steak night. It’s lively, dog-friendly, and the kind of place where you end up talking to other people and making new friends.
Q: Live music, steak, AND dogs? We’re already making a reservation. What do you love most about Houston?
A: I love the variety of it all! The unreal food, thriving arts scene, live music, and endless activities. One night you can salsa dance, the next you can catch a play or a rodeo. The mix of cultures means you’re constantly exposed to new ideas, flavors, and experiences.
Q: And now we want tacos after a rodeo while wearing salsa shoes. What’s your favorite aspect of your job?
A: I’ve always loved storytelling, especially in sports. As an athlete, I saw firsthand how much goes on behind the scenes, and I wanted to bring those stories to life. My favorite part is connecting people to the personalities, moments, and emotions that make sports unforgettable.
Q: If Bingo had a voice, what do you imagine it would sound like?
A: Definitely Sherlock Holmes. He has a refined British accent, sharp and observant. All he needs is a houndstooth jacket, monocle, and pipe and he is set.
Q: “The game is afoot… and also, it’s time for dinner.” What do you do as a hobby?
A: I love reading, cooking, and testing out new activities. Whether that’s dancing, mahjong, or rock climbing. There’s something energizing about being a beginner again and discovering new skills. It keeps life playful and full of unexpected wins!

Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis (eDKA) in Cats:
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), and the use of SLGT2
By: Laura Noaker DVM, DACVIM | VERGI247.com
Just like humans, our pets can develop diabetes, and it is often well-regulated with insulin. However, both cats and dogs can develop DKA, or diabetic ketoacidosis, a dangerous build-up of ketones in the blood brought on either by the body not producing enough insulin, or becoming unable to use insulin effectively. When the body cannot use glucose for energy, it goes into survival mode. The only problem is survival mode is never sustainable.
Without sufficient insulin, or the ability to use it effectively, the body cannot convert glucose properly, so blood glucose levels get very high (hyperglycemia.) Insulin is like a key that enables glucose to enter the cells that need it. When insulin is insufficient, glucose uselessly circulates in the bloodstream and continues to increase. When insulin is unable to deliver that glucose, the tissues and vital organs like
the brain that need it begin to go into starvation mode. In response, the body breaks down fat and the liver converts that fat into ketones to use for emergency fuel.
Using fat as fuel is great as a temporary fix, and the body is incredible at attempting to maintain balance, but if glucose regulation is not restored quickly, this emergency fuel ultimately creates a medical emergency in the cat or dog. The kidneys simply cannot keep up with filtering the excess ketones and excreting them in the urine. Therefore, ketone levels will continue to increase (ketoacidosis.) The end result is a body that becomes acidic (low blood pH – metabolic acidosis), is filled with unbalanced electrolytes, and can no longer maintain appropriate fluid balance.
Ketones do not burn clean energy. Their burn leads to pH and electrolyte imbalances which then leads to dehydration…and further imbalances. A vicious cycle has
begun. Electrolyte imbalances (particularly low potassium) can affect the heart’s rhythm and muscle function and low pH alters the cellular metabolism, which affects multiple processes and systems in the body. DKA is always fatal if left untreated.
Now for the tricky part: Cats taking SGLT2 inhibitors can also develop euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (eDKA.) This is a very serious (and often overlooked condition) in which the cat experiences the same build-up of ketones in the blood and the same ensuing imbalances, but they have a normal or near-normal blood glucose level (euglycemia.) This is why the diagnosis is often missed.
In cats newly diagnosed with diabetes, SGLT2 inhibitors work by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. In some cats, it is
inhibitors
thought that SGLT2 inhibitors may cause a shift in metabolism, causing the body to produce ketones even when blood glucose levels are normal (not elevated.)
Cats experiencing DKA or eDKA may drink and urinate more than normal, stop eating, vomit, and appear lethargic and uncomfortable. Their breathing patterns may also change. eDKA can occur at any time during treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors but blood pH and urine ketones should be closely monitored especially at the start of treatment.
Our feline friends like to keep us on our toes, whether they are balancing on a ledge we consider far too narrow, or experiencing the effects of medications we trust to help them feel better (and usually do work very well.) The Human-Animal Bond
The
Remarkable Nature of This Gift
By: Erica Sandberg, DVM, CHPV, CPEV; BluePearl Pet Hospice, Houston
In my work as a hospice and end-of-life care veterinarian, I often encounter people who tell me that losing their pet is harder than losing a human family member. If you haven’t experienced the human-animal bond yourself, then this could be hard to imagine. The animals in our lives that share our space with us can provide an immense source of support for their human caregivers. No matter what your day holds for you outside the front door, your dog will be there wagging their tail to greet you. Your cat is there to jump in your lap. And it doesn’t end with dogs and cats. I have met families that are deeply attached to their pet rat, pet chicken, or pet rabbit. For people who have suffered trauma in their lives, sometimes the first
step to their healing is to get up in the morning to care for their beloved pet. The bond between human and animal in these situations is incredibly powerful. They need us. And we need them.
Dogs, in particular, can be especially intuitive and aware of their owner’s wellbeing. Their sense of smell gives them numerous clues on a daily basis. And they can be service dogs without even having any training for this. I met a couple once who had a senior German Shepherd dog. This dog had saved the owner’s life. Not once. Not twice. Three different times. The owner had diabetes and three different times she was unconscious from low blood sugar. Her dog pushed on her with his muzzle over and over
until she woke up enough to call 9-1-1. This dog never had any specific training to be a service animal for a person with a medical condition. He just knew that something was not right and did what he could to take care of his beloved human.
Another incredible dog that I had the honor of meeting could detect when the family’s son was going to have a seizure. The dog would sleep next to the son and constantly follow him around the house. When the son had a seizure, the dog would run downstairs and bark excessively to alert the parents. He did this multiple times for this boy. The son eventually had surgery to correct the medical condition causing the seizures. The dog stopped following him around after this.
He clearly knew the boy was better and that he was safe from danger. I was in awe of this remarkable dog. This is what animals can do.
At no time is the humananimal bond more apparent to me than when I am helping a pet pass away peacefully in their caregiver’s arms. At that moment, it is common for people to speak of all of the things that their pet has helped them get through. The pet that was by their side through the death of a family member, a tough divorce or numerous other difficult times that they may have encountered in their life. And these are the words that are said during those end-of-life moments: “Thank you for being there… You can let go now… I’ll be okay… Thank you.”

Pet Oxygen Masks
New Tools Aid Pets In House Fires
By Miranda Sevcik, Public Information Officer, Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare
In a house fire, the number one priority is to get everyone out alive, but that goal also extends to our furry family members. Now, thanks to Harris County Emergency Services District 11 Mobile Healthcare (HCESD 11) carrying specialized animal oxygen masks, pets have a fighting chance. HCESD 11 serves residents of Northwest Harris County and is the largest Emergency Services District in Texas, covering 177 square miles with over 700,000 residents. HCESD 11 responds to more than 65,000 emergency medical calls annually, and sadly, some include structure fires with pets. Cooking-related fires continue to be the leading cause of residential fires in Harris County and according to first responders, the biggest threat to pets isn’t burns, it’s smoke inhalation. Cats and dogs, instinctively seeking shelter, often hide under beds or inside
closets where smoke settles, leading to unconsciousness and all too often, death.
Recognizing this vulnerability, HCESD 11 crews have added pet Oxygen masks to its ambulance fleet this summer. These masks are specifically shaped to seal over a cat's muzzle or a dog's snout, ensuring efficient delivery of Oxygen and significantly increasing the likelihood of recovery following smoke exposure.
Paramedic Yasmin Aguirre explains the need of this equipment on ambulances: “Masks designed for humans don’t deliver the amount of lifesaving Oxygen needed to resuscitate pets in smoke inhalation danger. These Oxygen masks are specifically designed for the faces of cats and dogs, and work exceptionally well, we are relieved to have them available to us so we can treat all members of the family affected by structure fires.”
Approximately 66% of U.S. households own at least one pet—about 86.9 million animals that can benefit from prompt Oxygen therapy if caught in residential blazes.
HCESD 11’s fleet, 40 advanced life-support ambulances, are already recognized for top-tier patient care and rapid response. The addition of pet Oxygen masks is more than a symbolic gesture; it equips paramedics and EMTs with practical tools during smoke-inhalation emergencies involving animals.
“Almost everyone who works here owns at least one pet- and if you ask any pet owner – they will tell you their animals are full-fledged family members deserving of medical attention in emergencies,” says HCESD 11 CEO Jordan Anderson. “Similar programs in Harris County’s Fire and other EMS services have proven that pet masks can
directly save lives, specialized pet Oxygen masks are essential tools in rescue efforts.”
Looking forward, HCESD 11 hopes that integrating this care into standard protocols will inspire other districts to follow suit. Families impacted by a fire in northern Harris County can now have greater peace of mind—knowing help is on the way not only for them but also for their fourlegged loved ones.
In summary:
By equipping all ambulances with pet-specific Oxygen masks, HCESD 11 is enhancing its lifesaving capabilities for companion animals in smoke emergencies. This proactive step ensures faster, more effective treatment for pets suffering from smoke inhalation— and reflects a compassionate, inclusive approach to emergency medicine.

Conservation Corner
As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight the Tapir. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.
By: Jessica Reyes
South America’s Pantanal at the Houston Zoo just got a whole lot cuter after welcoming a baby Baird’s tapir.
A female calf was born overnight on July 23 to mom Moli and dad Noah, weighing 18 pounds. Now at two and a half weeks, the calf
is tipping the scales at 30 pounds, gaining about two pounds a day! The calf will be named by her dedicated animal care team. Guests can see the spotted tapir in the mixed-species habitat where she can be found living with giant anteaters, capybara, and rheas.
The tapir is becoming a curious and vocal calf who often squeaks at mom and even her capybara neighbors. She loves spending time in the water and using mom as her personal jungle gym. Her energy bursts come in the form of mini-zoomies and she’s even begun nibbling on solid foods, although she will continue to nurse for up to eight months.
For now, she’s sporting her adorable watermelon-like spots and stripes, which serve as natural camouflage in the wild. These baby markings will gradually fade

over the coming months, and she’ll develop the solid dark coloration typical of adult tapirs around seven months old.
Baird’s tapirs are an ancient group of animals known as "Living Fossils." They are related to the primitive horse and rhinoceros. They are also the largest land mammal in South America.
Females are larger than males and can weigh up to 700 pounds.
Guests can help save wild tapirs in South America by visiting the
new calf at the Houston Zoo. A portion of each Zoo ticket and membership supports the Zoo’s tapir conservation partners in Brazil, Lowland Tapir Conservation Initiative (LTCI). LTCI monitors satellite collared tapirs to learn more about their movement and use the information to help create future wildlife protection plans. So far 85 tapirs are being monitored, making it the largest tapir study in the world.

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS
It’s pretty well understood at this point that I have an affinity for all animals…even a respect for the ones I fear. I’m drawn to the many species that inhabit our world, with their never-ending list of unique features and abilities that for some, has evolved over thousands if not millions of years. Evolution is what defines one of the most unique qualities of the Galápagos tortoise. If there were a contest today for the animal that exemplified longevity, this terrestrial being would surely win!
These animals belong to an ancient group of reptiles, appearing about 250 million years ago. By the Late Cretaceous, 70 million years ago, some had already become gigantic. About 1 million years ago, tortoises reached the Galápagos Islands. Most of the gigantic species began to disappear about 100,000 years ago. Isn’t it mind boggling to think a species survived an incredibly changing planet for millions
of years? And, not only has the tortoise survived, it boasts one of the longest lifespans of any animal on earth.
The amazing Galápagos tortoise are noted to live over 150 years. Records indicate an Aldabra giant tortoise named Adwaita may have been the longest living at an estimated 255 years. In general, most tortoise species can live 80–150 years. Like I said, longevity is one of their defining qualities!
Sometimes referred to as turtles, tortoises differ from turtles in that they are land-dwelling whereas turtles are partly aquatic. But, like turtles, tortoises have a shell to protect from predators and other threats. The shell is hard, and like other members of the suborder Cryptodira, they retract their necks and heads directly backwards into the shell to protect them. One interesting fact to note about head retraction is that although most species can accomplish this feat, the sea turtle
Photo: photographybyprudence.com
has lost its ability to retract its head.
Tortoises are unique among vertebrates in that the pectoral and pelvic girdles are inside the rib cage rather than outside. Tortoises can vary in size quite a bit. Adult male Galápagos tortoises can weigh up to 600 pounds, while females may weigh up to 200 pounds.
When I think of Galapogos, I immediately connect the island to Charles Darwin, the English biologist known for his contributions to science and evolution. During his second voyage to the Galápagos Islands in 1835, his observation of the shell size and shape variances between tortoise populations contributed to his theory of evolution. On islands with humid highlands, the tortoises are larger, with domed shells and short necks; on islands with dry lowlands, the tortoises are smaller, with "saddleback" shells and long necks.
Galápagos tortoises now represent one of the remaining two groups of giant tortoises in the entire world — the other group living on Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean. The Galápagos Islands were named for their giant tortoises; the old Spanish word galapago meant saddle, a term early explorers used for the tortoises due to the shape of their shells.
As herbivoress, the diet of the Galápagos tortoise includes cactus pads, grasses, and native fruit. During my encounter at the zoo, they readily chomped on the lettuce provided and might I say that if you were not paying attention, they could chomp down that lettuce quickly leaving your finger as the next bite!
The group of tortoises I got to meet at the zoo included Jervis, Seymour and Daphne, who are part of the "OG" group. The other seven are new to the zoo. In the bottom photo, I get to give a neck scratch. It was kind of muddy and gross so if you like to have clean nails, don't scratch a tortoise LOL! But, it was a cool experience and I had no idea how much they love being scratched...seems many animals do have a "spot" they like to have rubbed. And speaking of mud, the mud-caking the tortoises usually deters ticks and mosquitoes, but researchers have also observed the Galápagos finch landing on the backs of a tortoise, and removing ticks from the tortoise's body. I just love that..animals helping animals!
As for mating, tortoises are once again quite “no nonsense” about their procreation. Once mating season has ran its course, the female tortoises migrate to nesting zones to lay their eggs. She digs the hole with her hind feet, then lets the eggs drop down into the nest, and finally covers it again with her hind feet. The eggs incubate from 110 to 175 days (depending on the outside temperature). After hatching, the young hatchlings remain in the nest for a few weeks before emerging out a small hole.
You may be wondering about tortoises communication. During mating, there is some
“noise” that is akin to a groaning sound. Otherwise, these ancient creatures are rather silent, opting for behavior as a guide for communication. I will also testify to the fact that when “surprised”, the tortoise will retract its head and you will hear somewhat of a “hiss”. Ultimately, the tortoise is quite a survivor and a reminder that we humans have only occupied the planet for a mere moment compared to some other species. We are “guests” of God’s planet. As a guest, we should strive to respect those that were here before us, those that have endured untold change and those that bring value to our ecological system. A good guest is polite, cleans up after themselves, never presumes what they are allowed to do, and certainly never insults or injures the host. I’m afraid that as guests on this planet,
the human race has done all of these things and more to our ancestors. We can do better by these magnificent creatures. I hope you will join me in the crusade to respect our environment and honor all sentient beings.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT
Athis issue, we introduce you to: ClaireAndCats.com | 832-908-5073 hello@claireandcats.com Instagram.com/claireandcatshtx
Q: Hi Claire, we’re so excited to have Claire and Cats as this month’s Sponsor Spotlight! Let’s jump right in: what inspired you to start Claire and Cats?
A: I grew up with dogs and cats. Then, after adopting my own cats, I became completely fascinated by their nature and behavior. After caring for my four, I realized I couldn’t keep adopting more without affecting their wellbeing. That’s when it hit me: I could give my love and care to other people’s cats, too! It felt natural. I enjoy connecting with all kinds of feline personalities, and people around me kept telling me I had a gift with cats. So, I turned that passion into Claire and Cats.
Q: That’s a great origin story! What’s the most rewarding part of running a catcentric business in Houston?
A: I love that Claire and Cats focuses solely on feline care. So many people assume cats are “easy” and don’t need much, especially
compared to dogs, but that mindset overlooks how complex and sensitive cats really are. Being a cat-only sitter allows me to go deeper. I’m constantly learning, observing, and understanding their unique needs. There aren’t many cat-exclusive services in Houston, so I feel proud to offer something specialized, where cats aren’t an afterthought; they’re the priority.
Q: Cats as the main event, we love that! It’s about time these mysterious little creatures got the specialized attention they deserve. Cats are notorious for hiding from strangers. How do you earn their trust?
A: Not all cats hide. It often depends on how much socialization they had as kittens. When a cat is shy or unsure, I let them set the pace. I use slow blinking to signal I’m not a threat, then offer my hand for a “scent exchange,” just like cats greet each other. From there, I read their body language. Playtime is my go-to for building trust. It's engaging, enriching, and meaningful.
Q: That’s such a thoughtful approach, and slow blinking is the universal cat handshake! How do you ease the worries of first-time clients who are nervous about leaving their cat?
A: I get this question a lot, especially from first-time clients or those whose cats didn’t do well in boarding facilities. I always say: it’s like hiring a babysitter. You wouldn’t choose someone just because they’re “good with kids.” You'd choose someone who understands your
child’s unique needs. The same goes for cats. I customize every visit around their personality, routine, and comfort. My thorough photo and video updates give clients peace of mind right away. I also recommend meeting in advance, asking lots of questions, and trusting your gut.
Q: That’s such a great comparison. Cats really are family, and your care sounds so reassuring, especially to anxious pet parents. What do your own four cats teach you that helps your business?
A: Raising my own cats has taught me more than any book or training ever could. Real-life experiences, whether it’s a health scare, a vet visit, managing behavior changes, or small hiccups here and there, prepare me to handle similar situations when I care for clients’ cats. Each challenge becomes a lesson I can apply to others. I love that I get to use my personal experience to support, educate, and reassure other cat parents. That’s what makes this work so fulfilling for me.
Q: There’s nothing like a little reallife experience to sharpen those cat-care instincts. Your clients are lucky to have someone with such heartfelt insight. Last, but not least, how do you stay grounded and present while managing a busy catsitting schedule?
A: This year, my business has grown quickly, and as the only person running it, things can get overwhelming. I pour a lot of energy into each visit because I don’t just do the basics. I know toys can only go so far, and many cats are left bored. My goal is always to make each cat feel mentally engaged, cared for, and like they’re the only one that matters. It can be draining, so I’ve learned to be kinder to myself, take breaks when I can, and recharge so I can keep showing up fully.
That’s such a wise approach, and such a loving way to care for your clients and yourself. We admire your dedication and the heart you bring to feline care in Houston!
