ON THE COVER

RUGBY PLAYERS RALLY FOR RESCUE

From the Pitch to the Paws–Houston SaberCats Rugby stars are helping tackle pet adoption at Houston Humane Society. Our cover players are Emmanuel Albert, Max Schumacher, and Sam Hill, who, along with their teammates, helped PetTalk capture photos of adorable pets looking for a forever home...including some farm animals too! As you can see from this outtake above, the guys were great "sports" and had fun at the photoshoot. We appreciate the players taking time from their schedule to help spread the word about rescuing shelter animals. Meet more players inside! Cover by Allison Wilkins Photography.

S“crum on in”pet lovers as we tackle this issue head-on with an endearing feature that’s sure to score big—our cover story unites the fierce and furry as the Houston SaberCats Rugby team showcases adoptable pets from Houston Humane Society. We had a great time meeting the players and believe me, plenty of laughs too! As you can see from the outtake here, the guys were having a good time promoting a good cause! They may be tough on the field, but we got to see their softer side as they teamed up with PetTalk to remind our readers that plenty of "best friends" are awaiting their forever home, including farm animals. If you haven't been to a SaberCats game, you MUST go. It's a blast! The atmosphere is raucous and the play is exciting. We visited a game after the photoshoot, which made it all the more fun because we had met many of the team members. And, if you want to meet them as well, they offer a meet and greet at the end of the game. PetTalk will be on hand for the season's final game, June 8, distributing magazines and cheering on these awesome guys. So get ready for some adorable photos and great information about both organizations in our feature story and we hope to see you at the stadium!

Another "do not miss" in this issue is the plethora of contests we have teed up for you, including a chance for your pet to be our Cover in November. The cover contest is only one of several contests we have that are either launching June 1 or a tad bit later in the year, including a video contest, our annual Beach Bum contest and more. Check

out the details on page 20 so you can start preparing your entry.

Speaking of contests, our June issue also features the winner, finalists and all entries from the annual Pets in the Wildflowers Contest sponsored by Sunset Animal Hospital. It's a tradition to publish ALL entries no matter how many! See all of the smiling, adorable, furry entries posing in the pretty Spring flowers on pages 43-47. Congrats to "Jazz" whose exuberant photo snagged first place and a $200 gift certificate to Sunset. Thank you to all who entered and shared your cute and creative photos.

Next up, we have some informative articles on a variety of topics this month including the top 5 dangers to your pet to watch out for during the summer months, saving neonatal kittens, and ideas to bring wildlife into your backyard, even though you may be a city dweller. We also showcase the new Enrichment Program recently added to the many services offered at Molly's Mutt House. Molly's was one of the first advertising sponsors over 20 years ago and I've loved watching the business grow and serve Houston's pet owners. From boarding, day camp, grooming, and an extensive retail offering, Molly's continues to expand their already impressive services. Find out more about the new program on page 54.

And last but definitely not least, I would like to give a shout out to all of the great pet dads out there and wish you a very Happy Father's Day! Hey...maybe a great gift would be tickets to the Houston SaberCats game on June 8...just sayin'!

Henrietta On:

Scan the code to listen to Helmut RAP and to learn the secret voice who recorded it.

Her Cousin Helmut, a.k.a. Mini-Trump

In the April Anniversary Issue, I mentioned my "secret" cousin Helmut that I rarely talk about for reasons you shall see. But, I did promise to run my previous column from 2017 when I introduced him, for those that were curious. So, without further adieu...

Ihave a confession. I’ve been hiding a family member from you all of these years. Why you might ask? Well, he’s my cousin and basically his parents proved that two wrongs don’t make a right. His name is Helmut. I actually spell it HellMutt–which is more accurate IMHO. I apologize for the deception but as a consolation, I have shared my other cousins with you: Hortense, Hilda, Henri, Harvey, Hank, Harold and Harmony. OK, I haven’t introduced Harmony either. Please don’t ask.

As part of a "try to be more friendly" resolution, I am bringing Helmut into the fold. For better or worse, he’s family. Plus, Dragon Lady insisted that I invite him to the Salty Dog to meet my friends and help Helmut “integrate”. Her exact words were, “Henrietta, be the bigger person." I have a feeling she was referring to my growing waistline that can be attributed to my love of chocolate, marshmallows, meatloaf, peanut butter, cheesy goldfish, ice cream, creme-filled donuts…Sorry, I digress but thinking about food is preferable to thinking about what transpired during my benevolent introduction of Helmut to my compadres.

The evening started with all the usual suspects. Felicity Farnsworth trotted in and captured Helmut’s brain immediately. The two got along great. Helmut convinced her that Cheerios are donut seeds and she convinced him that 1 in 2 people like the taste of cheese so they were totally confused when they both declared how much they

hate cheese. This brain seminar was followed by Helmut telling Hortense that he could rap. I couldn’t believe my floppy ears when I heard Hortense say, “Wow Helmut, that’s quite a skill. I wrapped all of the presents for Aunt Higgy's 80th birthday, so if she has an 81st, I’ll be sure to call you for help.” Really? So Helmut

I’m begging God. “Lord, please forgive me for stealing that last bite of steak from DL’s plate. And forgive me for peeing on Felicity’s front door so she would get blamed. And forgive me for adding a little Scotch to the toilet water and pretending I just forgot that I'm supposed to drink from my dog bowl. But most of all Lord,

replies, “You must be related to Henrietta. No, you silly girl, I mean Rap, like singing.” Little treasonist. Next, I hear Hortense giggle and say “Ooh, you can sing?”

Stop encouraging this DNA misfit, I think to myself. “Where’s the mic?” comes out of Helmut’s mouth and I gasp and begin to beg. No, I’m not begging Helmut,

please don’t punish me by letting my friends see I’m related to this nitwit.” Apparently God was on a coffee break or peeing on Felicity’s door was just too much forgiveness to ask for because Helmut took the mic and here’s how it went:

(Rap)

My name is Helmut but my frinz

call me Hump

I know I’m a winner cuz I voted for Trump

Yeah I’m a super genius and a really good fella

I like tax breaks and hair that is yella

The Trump for this Hump is an amazing dude

He speaks his mind even when it’s rude

He goes out of his way to shake a hand

And there’s nothing more important than his global brand

Politics, showbiz, family and spin

He mixed it all together and he got a win

Some would say he’s dirty and a little too brash

But I say he’s King cuz he’s got the cash

Now I’m not tryin to steal his thunder

I just want the world to know I’m the 8th Wonder

So come on over girls an take a good whiff

My hair beats Trumps cuz it ain’t so stiff

I’ve got a doghouse that’s sprayed shiny gold

It lights up the sky, or so I’m told My world is full of glamour and lots of glitter

All I need now is to figure out twitter

So you see my little pretties I’m no Forest Gump

I’ve got all the makings of a mini-Trump

I don’t care about naysayers cuz my ego’s big

Just like Donald, I’m the guy you’ll dig!

At this point in the evening, I realized there was no way I could ever live through the agony of hilarious bent-over-belly-laughter taking place among what were previously known as my friends. So I did what any good dog would do in a moment of disgust. I went to Whataburger and ordered a Number 3 with extra fries.

HOUSTON HUMANE SOCIETY FUN RUN

Thousands Turn Out For A Tail-Wagging Good Time Unleashed

On Saturday, May 3, the Houston Humane Society hosted its largest fundraiser of the year, the 43rd Annual K-9 Fun Run & Walk, and it was a tail-wagging success! Runners, walkers, and fourlegged friends joined them for a

morning full of energy, community spirit, and compassion for animals and families in need.

Participants showed up in style for the costume contest, adding flair and fun to the day. After crossing the finish line, everyone gathered for a festive after-party

at Tejas Brewery to celebrate the cause, raise a toast to animal welfare, and enjoy time with fellow supporters.

HHS would like to offer a big thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible, including the amazing vendors,

and to all who came out to run, walk, or wag their tails for a good cause. It was paws-itively unforgettable!

BUNNY BUDDIES SHARES NEWS OF A SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY STORY

Our Hero, Harriet News

Originally surrendered to a local shelter because her owner had “too many animals,” Harriet eventually came to Bunny Buddies — like so many do — with a unique problem. After a fairly routine spay at the shelter, the sassy Dutch stopped eating a few days later. That’s a normal pain response in rabbits, but when it didn’t resolve after a few more days of standard remedies, they asked the rescue organization to provide more specialized care.

BB leadership agreed to take on Harriet’s case and retrieved her from the shelter. She immediately visited partner clinic Animal Medical Center of the Village (AMCV) on Kirby. Turns out that Harriet already had a fever, a common infection response.

The experienced exotics team at AMCV suspected an infection on Harriet’s uterine stump, citing a hardened area during a physical exam. They opted for advanced imaging, and they were right! She had developed a granuloma, a scar tissue mass caused by an infection or foreign object. This condition is quite rare.

The only viable solution was another procedure to assess the internal impact and remove the granulated tissue. Harriet stabilized enough for surgery, so the team cleared the issue area, relieving pressure on nearby organs.

After the successful operation, BB hoped to see a more rapid recovery, but Harriet still wasn’t eating on her own… even a week later. This is where the BB volunteer network really shines: she was moved into an experienced foster home, away from the busy clinic environment and — crucially — where she could be syringe-fed more frequently throughout the day. The dedicated fosters syringe-fed Harriet every 4 hours, for nearly a month, while she also received gut motility meds every 12 hours.

During this time they had regular check-ins with AMCV clinic staff and BB’s own medical advisor, Dr. Melissa McNeil.

Harriet was finally producing some normal output, then regained her appetite, and was gradually weaned from the meds and syringe feedings. Since then, she has fully recovered and quickly found a forever home!

Throughout this entire ordeal, Harriet was bright, curious, and

affectionate. She was determined to get well, and BB was confident she could pull through with the right support! Every bunny deserves a second chance and BB is  uniquely positioned to provide that opportunity with help from its strong network.

Thanks to the generosity of its donors, Bunny Buddies doesn’t have to hesitate when urgent cases like this arise — but it’s just one example from the 20+ rabbits

in the BB system. Consider donating to help the cause. Learn more about the organization at BunnyBuddies.org and follow on Facebook and Instagram: @bunnybuddieshouston. If you’re looking for quality care for your own pets, don’t hesitate to visit AMCV for expert guidance and exceptional compassion. Learn more about the clinic at AmcOfTheVillage.com.

Houston SaberCats mascot “Scratch” with adoptable (and adorable) kitten.

A Special Thank You To The Staff At Houston Humane Society

Paws and Players...a purr-fect combination to promote animal welfare! The Houston SaberCats Rugby players generously donated their time to showcase adoptables at Houston Humane Society's shelter. We had lots of laughs and fun creating this feature story in hopes of helping these animals, or any animals at the shelter, find a forever home. These guys are incredible athletes from around the globe, but even better, they are ALSO softies for animals in need!

We at PetTalk are grateful for the team's support of Houston's animal community and in turn, we hope

you support the Houston SaberCats by attending their upcoming game, June 8. PetTalk will be there distributing magazines and you won't want to miss the entertaining "behind the scenes" video of our photoshoot on the Jumbotron. See details inside.

We also want to thank the staff at Houston Humane Society for preparing the animals for their magazine debut...it was a lot of "organizing" with many moving parts and they did a fantastic job! If you are looking for a new pet to join your family, be sure to visit the shelter and find your next true love!

Rugby Meets Rescue: Houston Humane Society and Houston SaberCats Partner To Help Save Animals In Need

The Houston SaberCats and the Houston Humane Society have come together in a partnership that blends the passion of professional sports with the heart of animal welfare. Through this collaboration, the SaberCats are using their platform to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption and responsible pet ownership. From featuring adoptable pets in community activities to engaging fans with messaging

that supports the Humane Society’s mission, the partnership aims to create real impact both on and off the field.

“This partnership is about more than just rugby—it’s about giving back,” said Ramona Torres, Corporate Partnerships and Brand Manager for the Houston SaberCats. “We’re proud to support an organization that works tirelessly to protect and care for Houston’s animals. It also helps that a lot of our athletes are

huge animal lovers, which makes their involvement feel especially genuine and meaningful.”

The SaberCats are always looking for opportunities to partner with organizations to make a difference in the community. If your organization is interested in partnering with the Houston SaberCats, email inquiries to: Partnerships@HoustonSaberCats.com.

Houston SaberCats: Where Rugby Meets Heart (and Paws!)

Meet the Houston SaberCats—Houston’s own hard-hitting, try-scoring, crowd-roaring rugby team! Born in 2017 from a passionate group of local rugby clubs, the SaberCats aren’t just breaking tackles—they’re breaking new ground as one of the founding teams of Major League Rugby (MLR). And yep, they’ve got their very own home turf: SaberCats Stadium, the first rugby-specific stadium in the league, right here in H-Town with room for 4,000 fans and a whole lot of energy.

Game day with the SaberCats? It’s part sport, part party, and 100% Houston. The atmosphere is electric, thanks to die-hard fans, lively supporter groups, and Scratch—the team’s saber-toothed cat mascot who dances, high-fives, and steals hearts faster than you can say “try!” From thundering tackles to high-flying passes, the action on the field is only matched by the excitement in the stands. Think stadium snacks with a Texas twist (yes, there’s Tex-Mex), local food trucks making surprise appearances, and plenty of tail- wagging

fun—especially now with their newest teammates.

That's right, the SaberCats have teamed up with Houston Humane Society to shine a spotlight on some of the city’s most lovable free agents: adoptable pets! Look out for adoptable dogs strutting their stuff at select home games, ready to meet their forever families while soaking up the stadium vibes. It's a match made in Houston heaven—rugby and rescue pets.

Beyond the field, the SaberCats are deeply rooted in the community, with outreach programs and events that make them more than a team—they’re a family (a very loud, very fast, and very furry-friendly family). Whether you attend a game for the scrum or just to scratch behind some ears, there’s a place for everyone at the SaberCats Stadium.

As the team continues to dominate the MLR postseason (three years running!), they’re not just chasing championships—they’re growing the sport of rugby and giving back to the city they love. Come for the rugby, stay for the puppies, and leave with a smile on your face!

The Sport Of Rugby

Rugby is a fast-paced, physical sport that originated in England in the early 19th century, when a student at Rugby School in Warwickshire, supposedly picked up a soccer ball and ran with it. Played with an oval ball and 15 players per side, rugby is a dynamic blend of strength, strategy, and nonstop action. Rugby actually predates American football and helped inspire its creation. But while football evolved with helmets and playbooks, rugby kept its free-flowing nature and spirit of continuous play.

Though hugely popular in countries like New Zealand, South Africa, England, and Australia, rugby has seen a steady rise in popularity in the United States. Its appeal is growing, especially among college athletes, high school programs, and sports fans looking for hard-hitting action and team spirit.

As its popularity began to rise domestically, the United States launched Major League Rugby (MLR) in 2018, a professional league featuring teams across North America. One of the standout franchises is right here in Houston— the Houston SaberCats. They play at SaberCats Stadium, the first US stadium built specifically for MLR play. The team has developed a loyal fan base and plays a key role in growing the sport locally, offering clinics, youth programs, and thrilling matchdays that blend international flair with Texas energy.

So, whether you're a lifelong fan or a curious newcomer, rugby in Houston is booming— and there’s never been a better time to get in on the action!

Rugby vs. American Football Equipment

In rugby, players wear minimal gear—typically just a mouthguard and occasionally a soft helmet known as a scrum cap. There is no heavy padding. In contrast, American football players wear extensive protective equipment, including hard helmets, shoulder pads, and body armor to absorb the physical impacts of the game.

Passing

Rugby rules strictly allow only backward or sideways passes, emphasizing teamwork and positioning. In American football, one forward pass is allowed per play, and it must be made from behind the line of scrimmage. This opens up a different strategic dimension and allows for explosive plays.

Downs vs. Phases

specific injury circumstances. American football, on the other hand, allows unlimited substitutions between plays, facilitating specialized offensive, defensive, and special teams units.

Game Time

A rugby match runs for 80 minutes, divided into two 40-minute halves, with a running clock and fewer stoppages. Football games are 60 minutes long (four 15-minute quarters), but frequent timeouts, stoppages, and commercial breaks can extend the real-time duration significantly beyond that.

Play Style

Rugby is characterized by continuous play. There are no “downs” like in football. Instead, after a tackle, the game continues quickly through rucks or scrums. In American football, the game is structured around a down system, where teams have four attempts (downs) to gain ten yards. Success resets the count, while failure results in a turnover.

Substitutions

Substitutions in rugby are limited, and once a player is removed, they typically cannot re-enter the game unless it’s for

Rugby features a more fluid and continuous style of play, with frequent and rapid changes in possession. American football is defined by its stop-and-start rhythm, with individual plays and well-defined strategies for both offense and defense.

Scoring

Rugby scoring includes a try (5 points), followed by a conversion kick (2 points), with additional scoring opportunities through penalty kicks (3 points) and drop goals (3 points). In football, touchdowns are worth 6 points, with an extra point (1 or 2 points) available after. Field goals are worth 3 points, and safeties score 2 points.

Common Rugby Lingo Try

The main scoring method in rugby, worth 5 points, achieved by grounding the ball in the opponent’s in-goal area.

Conversion

A kick at goal taken after a try, offering the chance to score an additional 2 points.

Scrum

A restart mechanism where players bind together in a tight formation to contest possession after certain stoppages.

Lineout

Used to restart play when the ball has gone out of bounds. Players form lines perpendicular to the sideline, and the ball is thrown back in.

Tackle

The act of bringing the ball carrier to the ground. The tackled player must immediately release the ball, allowing play to continue.

Ruck

Occurs when the ball is on the ground after a tackle, and players from both teams engage over the ball, attempting to secure possession without using their hands.

Maul

Formed when the ball carrier is held up by opponents but remains standing, with teammates binding on and pushing collectively.

Knock-On

When the ball is accidentally fumbled forward, resulting in a scrum awarded to the opposing team.

5 Summer Dangers for Cats and Dogs What Every Pet Parent Should Know

Summer can be a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your pets, but the season brings unique dangers for cats and dogs.

Venomous Snake Bites

In the Houston area, the venomous snakes we see are coral snakes, cottonmouths/water moccasins, rattlesnakes, and copperheads. Snakes want to be left alone but our animals don’t always understand! If your pet is bitten, remove their collar immediately and head to the nearest ER. We have specific protocols for treating snakebites. There are no home remedies for treating a venomous snakebite. Your pet will likely need antivenom, IV fluid therapy, pain medication and repeat bloodwork.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is one of the most common and sometimes deadly summer threats for pets. Dogs and cats don't sweat like humans; they cool themselves primarily through panting, which can be inefficient in extreme heat. If you notice heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, rapid heartbeat, lethargy: STOP and get your pet to shade with fresh water to help them cool off. Never use ice water or ice. If overheating progresses to heatstroke, you will notice your pet stumbling, their gums may turn pale, they will likely experience vomiting and/or diarrhea, weakness, seizures, collapse. Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a short time and limit play and exercise during peak heat hours.

Unsafe Foods

Summer BBQ parties can be dangerous for pets. Corn on the cob, onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, alcohol and bones can be toxic or cause digestive blockages. Greasy or fatty foods can also

lead to pancreatitis. Always keep food and trash out of pets’ reach.

Drowning and Pool Safety

Not all pets are natural swimmers, and even if they are, drowning can be a real risk. Some dogs may panic if they fall into a pool and cannot find the stairs to get out, or get caught in a current at the beach. Cats are also at risk, especially if startled near water. Always supervise pets around water, invest in a pet life vest if needed, and make sure your pool has an easy way out that your pet has learned. Never leave your pet unattended near water.

Saltwater Toxicity

A trip to the beach can turn dangerous if pets drink salt water. Ingesting large amounts can cause imbalances in sodium levels in the body. Dogs (cats usually turn down a swim in the ocean) can experience vomiting, explosive diarrhea, dehydration, tremors, and seizures. Always bring fresh water for your pet, discourage them from drinking seawater, and rinse off salt and sand after beach outings to keep their skin and coat healthy! By staying alert to these five summer dangers, you can help keep your pets safe, happy, and healthy. And remember, if your pet needs emergency care, we will always be here for you both, 24/7.

Willow Current Foster

The Everyday Hero Helping Neonatal Kittens and Reducing Shelter Intakes in Texas

In Texas, we are in the middle of our annual kitten season.

This season usually lasts from about March to October. This is because cats are polyestrous breeders, meaning they are able to produce multiple litters during the season. The average litter

their mother are likely to become euthanized or die in a shelter setting. Unless every day wonderful people step up to help these vulnerable neonates and address the underlying cause of the high intake rate.

Neonates are kittens that are

defecate, and a consistently warm and safe area to grow. It takes a knowledgeable eye to recognize when they are not thriving or becoming ill and may require medical assistance. It may seem daunting at first, but this is how all new neonatal fosters feel when they first start out. It is completely normal. One of the most important points when first starting out is to have a support network. This can be a rescue group or a veterinary clinic that has staff or a program that specializes in neonatal care. These groups may provide you with advice and supplies to help raise these kittens. It is also very comforting to know that if you have any questions, you can reach out to an experienced person to help. Some rescues will even provide options for adopting

size is about four, with the range being one to twelve. That is a lot of babies being born out there! It is not surprising then that shelters become overrun with these litters, with or without mom, during this time. Those that arrive without

less than four weeks old, when they are not self-reliant and weaned. It takes a specialized knowledge base to care for these kittens at this delicate age. They require frequent bottle feeding, stimulation to urinate and

out kittens through their program once they reach a certain age. Now, if you are worried about not having enough space to care for them, that can be easily resolved. Many fosters have raised litters from birth to four weeks of age

in storage containers! These kittens are very small and do not really start learning to walk until about four weeks of age. They spend most of their time eating and sleeping. This also makes transporting them easy. So, if your work allows it, they tuck nicely under your desk within easy reach for feedings. The point is: anyone can do it! The first step is to try to learn from each litter you raise. Unfortunately, there will be babies that pass away, that is just a sad fact of fostering. You will have given them a better chance of survival than if they had stayed in a shelter environment.

Now that we have touched on how to address the immediate issue of live litters, we can move on to how we can minimize future litters landing at shelters. Texas shelters are at, or very close to, capacity most of the time, and there is just not enough space to house every homeless animal, let alone one that requires as much time and care as neonatal kittens. The sad reality is that they are very often euthanized for space. Overpopulation is a big issue here in Texas. Remember, one female cat can have three litters during the peak breeding season. Four months later, that litter can start having litters of their own, therefore compounding the issue. Stressing the importance of sterilizing (spaying for females, neutering for males) owned cats, and supporting programs that sterilize colony feral cats have made the best difference in reducing shelter intake rates.

There is so much that can be done for our feline friends, both big and small. Aside from fostering neonatal kittens that have been pulled from shelters, you can support trap, neuter and release programs (TNR) that sterilize and vaccinate feral cats. Reach out to your local shelter, rescue, SPCA and/or Humane Society to see how best you can help the kittens and cats in your community. Remember, anyone can do it, and these little guys will be better off with your efforts!

Bringing Wildlife Into Your Citylife

From bats to butterflies, here’s how to welcome wild guests to your urban garden.

In the heart of Houston’s vibrant city life, it’s completely possible to create a slice of wild nature right outside your door. Whether you live in Montrose, Meyerland, or Memorial, turning your backyard into a haven for butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, bats, and even opossums and playful squirrels is

not just a treat for the senses. It’s a meaningful way to support the environment.

The first step in creating a wildlife-friendly backyard is planting native flowers, shrubs, and trees. Plants like Texas lantana, coral honeysuckle, milkweed, and purple coneflower are perfectly adapted to Houston’s climate.

They thrive with less water and care, while providing essential food and shelter for local wildlife. Monarch butterflies depend on milkweed to complete their life cycle, while hummingbirds are drawn to the nectar-rich blooms of trumpet vines and salvias. Honeybees and native bees benefit from a steady source of pollen and nectar from early spring through late fall. A mixture of trees, flowering shrubs, and ground covers creates a diverse landscape that stays beautiful throughout the seasons. Creating a layered environment helps even more. Think of your yard as a mini forest with a place for all creatures great and small. Shrubs such as American beautyberry provide berries that attract birds while offering safe hideouts. Low flowering plants not only add pops of color but provide foraging opportunities for bees and butterflies. Adding cozy birdhouses, bat houses, and bee

hotels can dramatically increase the diversity of wildlife that finds a home in your garden. Who knew your backyard could become the hottest real estate in town?

While you’re planting flowers and putting up birdhouses, don’t forget about some of nature's most underrated helpers. Bats might not get the same glamorous attention as butterflies, but they are superheroes in their own right. A single bat can eat thousands of mosquitoes in one evening, making your summer nights much more comfortable. Setting up a bat house on a tall pole or tree can offer them a safe place to roost, and they’ll reward you by keeping mosquito populations under control without any sprays or citronella candles.

Opossums also deserve a little love in your backyard habitat. These shy, gentle creatures are like nature's clean-up crew. They snack on unwanted pests like ticks, cockroaches, and even

snakes. Opossums are immune to many snake venoms and rarely carry diseases like rabies, thanks to their low body temperature. Although they are nocturnal, it is not uncommon to see them during the daytime, so don’t be alarmed if you do.

Water is a key component of any successful wildlife habitat. Even the smallest backyard can offer a critical water source. A simple birdbath or shallow dish filled with clean water can attract a surprising variety of creatures. Moving water, like a fountain or dripper, is especially appealing to hummingbirds and animals that prefer fresh, circulating water. A butterfly puddling station, just a shallow dish filled with moist sand

and stones, gives butterflies a place to drink and absorb minerals. Think of it as their version of a trendy spa day. Just remember to keep the water clean and fresh, especially during Houston’s warm summers.

Another essential element is a commitment to chemical-free living. Avoiding pesticides and herbicides helps protect the very insects and animals you’re trying to attract. Creating backyard habitats is more important than ever. Across the country, species like honeybees, monarch butterflies, and even songbirds are declining at alarming rates. Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have made it harder for these vital creatures to find the food, shelter,

and clean water they need to survive. Honeybees are essential pollinators for many of the foods we eat, and butterflies play critical roles in plant reproduction and biodiversity. Without them, entire ecosystems would struggle.

Even if you have limited space, like a small yard, balcony or patio, you can still invite wildlife to your world. Potted native plants, a hummingbird feeder, bat houses, squirrel feeder or a small water dish can make a big difference. By turning even a small corner of your yard into a safe haven, you are helping to support the continuation of these species and Houston’s ecosystem.

Creating a wildlife-friendly space is not just about planting

flowers or hanging up birdhouses. It is about reconnecting with the natural world, even in the middle of our bustling city. Every butterfly that flutters by, every hummingbird that zips to your feeder, and every squirrel that performs acrobatics in your trees is a reminder that nature and city life can coexist beautifully. Houston may be known for its big energy, but with a little effort, we can also be known for our big hearts when it comes to helping wildlife. So, grab your gardening gloves, let your pets supervise (or at least pretend to help), and start planting the seeds of a wilder, greener, more magical Houston right outside your door.

"Every butterfly that flutters by, every hummingbird that zips to your feeder, and every squirrel that performs acrobatics in your trees is a reminder that nature and city life can coexist beautifully."

Molly’s Mutt House Launches Enrichment Academy

Celebrating 20 years with a new era of purpose-driven play and care.

Ifounded Molly’s Mutt House in October 2004 with $30,000 in credit split between two credit cards—and a whole lot of passion. At the time, we were one of just four doggie daycares in Houston. Since then, we’ve opened and closed a few doors along the way, but for the past 16 years, we’ve proudly called Garden Oaks our forever home. This past October, we celebrated 20 incredible years in business—and we’re more committed than ever to growing, evolving, and serving the amazing community of dogs (and their humans) who surround us.

Like so many small businesses, the 2020 shutdowns challenged us to rethink everything. The pet care industry changed dramatically, and we had a choice: adapt or shut down. That turning point led to the creation of our Enrichment Academy, launching in January 2025.

We've moved beyond the traditional daycare model, embracing a hybrid approach that combines social play with enriching structured activities tailored to each dog’s unique needs. At Molly's Mutt House, we understand that dogs thrive when they can be their true, instinct-driven selves.

A day in our care now includes small-group social sessions, oneon-one enrichment, snack breaks, and intentional rest periods. Our enrichment activities tap into natural behaviors like scent work, digging, shredding, agility, and search-and-find games—all with

a healthy dose of fun and challenge. Each month, we theme our activities around a story, keeping every week fresh, engaging, and exciting.

We’ve also expanded enrichment into our boarding services.

Let’s be honest—spending the day in a suite with just potty breaks doesn’t cut it. That’s why enrichment is now a required part of every boarding stay, creating a happier, healthier, and more balanced experience for our

overnight guests.

And we’re not stopping there! We’re actively exploring ways to bring enrichment into our grooming services, making visits more enjoyable and less stressful for our four-legged clients.

Today, Molly’s Mutt House is proud to be Houston’s Premier Canine Enrichment Center. If you haven’t stopped by yet, come see what we’re all about and how we can make your day (and your dog’s) a little brighter.

In a fast-paced city like Houston, enrichment doesn’t always come naturally. Dogs need the opportunity to truly *be* dogs—and we’re here to make that possible. Visit us at 3410 Shepherd Dr. or visit our website to learn more at MuttHouse.com.

Tail of Triumph: Houston Zoo’s Caiman Lizard Beats the Odds Against Cancer

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight the journey of a Caiman Lizard. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

Houston Zoo’s northern Caiman lizard Phillip is back on exhibit after undergoing treatment for a rare

medical diagnosis. After a battle with jaw cancer and months of expert veterinary care, Phillip has reunited with his companion

George and resumed his role as an ambassador for his species. Phillip’s remarkable journey to being cancer-free is a testament to the extraordinary care provided by the Zoo’s animal health and care teams, as well as the collaborative expertise from veterinary specialists in Houston.

Last spring, Phillip's animal care team noticed unusual swelling on the right side of his face. After a thorough evaluation by the Zoo’s veterinary team and consultation with Dr. Todd McCoy, a board-certified veterinary dentist, it was confirmed that Phillip had developed cancer in his jaw. He underwent surgery in the fall where the part of his jaw containing cancer was surgically removed. Thanks to the skill and dedication of Dr. McCoy and his staff and the Zoo’s veterinaryand animal care teams, Phillip

He was given a clean bill of health and is back in his habitat, where guests can see him enjoying his normal diet and charismatic presence in the Reptile & Amphibian House daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Native to the northern regions of South America, northern Caiman lizards are semi-aquatic reptiles

with skills uniquely adapted for life on land, trees and water. Their strong limbs and powerful tails make them excellent swimmers, while their sharp claws and muscular bodies enable them to climb and burrow with ease. Caiman lizards’ greatest threat is habitat loss and water pollution in their native range.

Guests can save wild northern caiman lizards by visiting Phillip in the Reptile and Amphibian house. A portion of each Zoo admission and membership helps the Zoo support global partners like Patrícia Medici and her work at the Lowland Tapir Conservation Initiative (LTCI). With the Zoo's support, LTCI tracks and collects

data on wild tapirs, which is used to inform protection plans for the species and its habitat. Protection of habitat for tapirs also protects the homes of animals like northern caiman lizards that share the same space. Houston

Tell us what you enjoy most about selling real estate?

What I enjoy the most about selling real estate is that every single day it’s something brand new and different. Every property I list and sell is different from every other one. And all the clients that I work with are totally separate and unique to themselves. It is never a case of same old, same old. You can never get complacent working in real estate.

What is the outlook for the Houston Market in coming months-year?

In Houston, we have always been fortunate. Our real estate market is stable and strong. We used to be the number one destination for relocation in the country and today we still get plenty of buyers moving away from California and other states and coming to us here in Texas. Even if tariffs cause in increase in pricing, Houston is strong and hearty, and we’ve always persevered. I do not predict death and doom.

Well, that’s good news! When is a good time to start planning if someone wants to buy a home?

The sooner the better!  As large and diversified as Houston is, the more time it takes to really study and make a decision on where you want to be. Once you do make that decision, you will be ready to jump on an available property that has the important elements you’re looking (school zone, pool, large backyard, etc.).

We love your advertisements in PetTalk with your dog. Tell us about your pets.

Well, how much time do you have and how many chapters can I submit LOL? I had always had black Labrador retrievers up and until a certain age where I really couldn’t control them that well, so I switched and looked into a smaller dog. I found a Westie that was perfect for me and I named him Mortimer. I loved him and when I lost him, I was devastated. I thought for sure I could never bring another puppy into my life, but then I found Agatha. She is feisty, fun and curious about everything. I would be lost without her!

How do you incorporate pets into your business model?

Agatha is very important to my business, especially in advertising. Not that I am not a natural beauty, but I have found most people love looking at my precious dog Agatha, who is gorgeous and fun, (rather than her elderly owner with wrinkles). She is a big part of my life, and it’s important that my clients feel they know me and can trust me.

We agree, Agatha is adorable. Are you involved with any pet charities or organizations?

My niece Lauren owns a company called L 3 DESIGNS. In the winter, they build dog houses for dogs that are strays or that are dropped off in certain areas of the city and left to fend for themselves. Her company is a landscaping and design company, and they make the doghouse project a priority for their community involvement.  I always help as I can financially because I know the caliber of their work and the great need it fulfills.
