Pet adoption and partnering with Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) Houston saves lives by providing a loving home to animals in need and reducing overcrowding in shelters. It helps break the cycle of pet overpopulation and promotes responsible pet ownership. I’ve spent the last several years embracing the adoption and fostering process with CAP, supporting their vital work of caring for and re-homing vulnerable animals in our communities.

Let’s work together supporting CAP and make a difference by adopting a precious animal or simply by making a donation with the QR code below.

Letter from the Editor ON THE COVER

Making A Statement!

If you want to find the nexus of adorable meets sass, you'll find it in our cover model Sophia! The plan was for Sophia to wear heart-shaped glasses for our LOVE feature, which she wears on a regular basis. However, on this day, she was not having the rose-colored glasses and promptly disposed of them, opting for the purple hearts she is wearing on the cover. We had a great laugh and quickly understood that Sophia knows what she wants! Learn more about Sophia and mom Edna, along with a series of other animal lovers in our feature story.

Cover Photo: Allison Wilkins Photography

October may be known for tricks and treats, spooky sights, and all things that go bump in the night—but in this issue, we’re leading with something that’s always in season: LOVE.

Our cover story is a heartfelt celebration of Houstonians who are truly passionate about what they do. From a devoted pet parent who once thought her jet-setting lifestyle wouldn’t allow her to have a dog— until the irresistible Sophia came along—to professionals like veterinarians, groomers, trainers, and animal advocates who pour their hearts into their work or volunteering every single day. These are people who don’t just "like" all things animal… they love all things animal!

My initial thought for this issue was to remind us all that love isn’t bound by a calendar—while October may lean toward the ghostly and ghoulish, it’s also a perfect time to highlight the warm, fuzzy side of life. Because what’s more beautiful than the unconditional love between pets and their people? And let's face it, the world can use more talk about love and less talk about disagreeing!

But fear not, spooky season fans—we did get into the Halloween spirit with our Howl-o-Ween Shopping Guide, packed with spooktacular finds for your furry goblins. From bat wings to boo-tiful bow ties, we’ve conjured up the most paw-some pet gear around. Check it out on page 41 and remember, shop local when possible!

And speaking of frightful fun, don’t miss our annual Henrietta's Frightfully Fun Photo Contest, sponsored by The Doggie Express—the masterminds behind the best

dog treats on earth (and maybe even the underworld). Snap a pic of your costumed cutie and enter between Oct. 15–31 on our website, HoustonPetTalk.com, for your chance to win a ghoulishly great prize. And, to be sure you don't miss any of our pawesome contests throughout the year, click that button on the website to join our bi-monthly newsletter!

Also in this issue, we dive into some informative articles, including:

- Halloween safety tips to keep your pets protected while haunting the neighborhood - Training your cat (yes, it’s possible!) and why it can improve your feline friend’s well-being

- A special feature on Pet Blessings in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Learn about the origins of this beautiful tradition and find out where you can attend a pet blessing right here in Houston.

Yes, October is a FULL month of fun! Not only do we have Halloween festivities, it's the busiest month of the year for pet events. From PawsFest, sponsored by PUCCI Cafe at LaCenterra, to Mutts, Meows & Margaritas, to HPA's Barktoberfest and more, we have it all for you in our news section. Plus, we offer an extensive list of events on our website calendar. We don't want you to miss a thing!

Whether you're lighting your jack-o-lantern, snuggling with your black cat, or shopping for pumpkin-flavored treats, we hope this issue wraps you in all the love (and just enough spooky) that makes October so magical.

Henrietta On:

"All Hallows' Eve"

Normally we canines are a risky group

That love to run and play, But October is a special month Where we can hide while "on display"

It started in pre-Christian Celtic days

As the season turned mild to cold, Crops were gathered and put away Safe from winter's hold

This festival marked a new season While also noting the end, As it was thought this time of year Was a macabre, living-dead blend

It was a spooky notion of other worlds

Full of spirits, fairies and ghouls,

Strange beings of a dark sort

Who played by different rules

Fast forward to modern days

And what twoleggers believe, It's a reason to dress bizarre

On All Hallows' Eve

Crazy costumes abound Like a Skeleton, Witch and Devil, Or any creative garb

Thought to be on a spirit's level

Now what does this mean

For us canines known as dogs?

It means we are subjected to attire Of Scarecrows, Pumpkins and Frogs!

We're made to wear crazy stuff

Like flashing lights and wigs, My cousin Hortense's mom

As much as we deplore

The things we have to wear, The joy it brings our parents

Seems unusually rare

They laugh and giggle And post on IG for all to see, "Isn't he cute?

He's now a Monkey"

Yes it's a bit embarrassing

To wear Butterfly Wings, But my compadres and I Decided there are worse things

Our parents find such joy In something so wacky, Since we love to see them smile

We're OK with being tacky

Even dressed her as a Pig

Humiliating would be the word

That pops in our doggy mind, At least the costumes have one thing: A hole for the tail on our behind

And as if the digital display Is not enough stress, Two-leggers think it's cool

To enter us in a costume contest

After mulling it all over

We decided to think this way: Why not play along? We could have a field day!

Just think of the poses

Our masters want us to strike, And each comes with a treat

Our ultra-favorite delight

But there is a reward

Much loftier than food, One that ignites the Centuries-old feud

As a charlatan of the Halloween night I can deftly become a Rat And Princess Newman Will be one sorry Cat!

I will tease her endlessly

Until she develops a vendetta And I can't wait to hear her

"I can't believe it, it's you

I'll smile my best 100 watt smile

Princess who thinks she's a Princess, it's me I enjoyed the chase, Happy Halloween!"

Why I Love...

EXPLORING THE PASSIONS OF ANIMAL LOVERS

There’s something undeniably powerful about love—especially when it’s tied to our passion. Whether it’s a tail-wagging pup who greets you at the door after a long day, or the sense of purpose that comes from helping an injured animal heal, love in the animal world takes many forms. It's been said that when we love something deeply, it drives us to act, to care, and to live with greater meaning.

Although October may be thought of as a "spooky" month, I know that love is all year long and why not celebrate it...the pure, joyful, often selfless passion that Houstonians feel for animals in a special feature titled: Why I Love…” Each of the people

spotlighted in this story fills in those dots with something unique and personal. You'll meet a devoted pet parent who finds comfort and companionship in her four-legged family member, a talented dog trainer who thrives on building trust and communication, a compassionate veterinarian whose heart lies in healing, and an animal welfare educator shaping the next generation of advocates.

We also showcase the artistry of a pet photographer who captures the spirit of animals through a lens, the dedication of a wildlife volunteer helping native species thrive, the passionate pet groomer who turns furry clients into works of art, and

two tireless community volunteers making a difference in shelters and rescue efforts across the city.

Each portrait of the person and pet together, taken by the talented Allison Wilkins, shines a light on their shared love–because love, when it comes to animals, is so often a shared journey. I hope you enjoy this fun feature story on the ways people LOVE in the pet and wildlife community as much as our team loved putting it together.

These stories inspire us, and we hope they inspire you too. Because when you follow your passion, life becomes more exciting, more fulfilling, and undeniably more worthwhile.

Sophia: The Gift That Changed My Life

I never imagined I’d become a pet owner as an adult. Growing up without animals in my home, I learned to admire them from afar. I believed pets were for families with kids or for people who knew instinctively how to care for them. I’ve long supported Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), the Houston SPCA, and Lifeline of Galveston County, wanting to help homeless animals in the area find forever homes and to care for and control the feral cat population in our city. I have an aquarium of fish at my office that my employees take care of. I’m a professional woman without children, always busy with work, and I often travel, play golf, and go abroad for leisure. By the time I was older, I thought that chapter of life had passed me by.

And then came Sophia.

She arrived in my life as a gift, a surprise from my friend and business partner, Suzanne Klein. Sophia was a tiny Pomeranian puppy with bright eyes, fur as fluffy as cotton candy and SPUNK! From the moment I held her, I knew my life had changed. I wasn’t just welcoming a dog into my home; I was opening my heart to a kind of companionship I had never known.

A Companion Like No Other

Sophia quickly became my shadow. She goes to the office with me every day. She follows me from room to room, curls up beside me when I rest, and greets me at the door with a joy so pure it erases the weight of the day. Her presence reminds me daily that love doesn’t need words; it’s in the wag of her tail, the tilt of her head, and the way she chooses to stay close to me simply because she wants to.

The Gift of Routine

Before Sophia, my days often blurred together. Work, errands, and evening events: all felt predictable. But with her, life gained a rhythm. Morning walks, feeding times, and play breaks gave structure and meaning to the ordinary. It wasn’t just about caring for her; it was about being present, about cherishing those small moments that had once slipped past unnoticed.

More Movement, More Joy

Despite being such a small pup, Sophia has

Parent to Sophia

endless zest for life. She naturally pulls me outside, pushing me to move, play, and laugh at her boundless energy. Even her quirks, like bouncing on her paws when excited or insisting on carrying toys twice her size, bring a kind of joy that stays long after the moment passes.

Learning Together

Being a first-time pet owner as an adult meant stepping into the unknown. At first, I worried: Was I feeding her the right food? Thank you, Dr. Kelley Kurtz at Briargrove Animal Clinic. She assured me I was a fit parent and was taking good care of her. Was I training her properly? Thank you, Adam Moore from DogLab TX. Adam and his team are talented trainers for both Sophia and me! Was she socializing enough with other dogs? Thank you, Kerry and exceptional crew at The Best Little Dog House in Texas. Sophia loves to go to “school” and play with her friends. Was she getting enough exercise? Thank you, Shelby Kibodeaux. Sophia looks forward to her daily walk with Shelby. Was I grooming her correctly? Thank you, Carrie Saunders at

Central Houston Animal Hospital. Sophia makes weekly visits to CHAH to be bathed and groomed. What if I couldn’t take her when traveling? Thank you to friends Jody Merritt and Frankie Vera. I never worry when I’m away and Sophia is in their care.

But as days turned into weeks, I realized that Sophia didn’t need me to be perfect; she just needed me to show up with love and consistency. And in return, she taught me patience, trust, and the beauty of learning as we go.

A Love I Didn’t Expect

Sophia isn’t just my pet, she’s family. She has filled spaces in my heart I didn’t realize were empty, turning ordinary days into something extraordinary. She reminds me to slow down, smile more, and find joy in the simplest things. Being gifted with Sophia later in life taught me something important: it’s never too late to experience the magic of having a pet. Sometimes the best gifts come when you least expect them, wrapped not in paper or ribbons, but in fur, love, and the quiet companionship of a friend who chooses you every single day.

...Being a Dog Trainer

Iwholeheartedly LOVE being a dog trainer! There’s nothing more fulfilling than watching a dog learn something new, and then seeing their human inspired by the progress. I have the opportunity to help people enjoy life with their dogs, and that will always be special to me.

Training is more than teaching commands. Training is building a relationship based on mutual trust and communication. I love turning moments of frustration into breakthroughs, where both dog and owner start to understand each other. That connection is magic!

One of my favorite parts of the job is problem solving. Every dog is unique, and learning what makes them tick keeps things exciting. Whether it's quirky behavior, an environmental challenge, or just finding the right motivation, there’s always a puzzle to solve.

At the end of the day, I have the privilege of blending science, creativity, and heart to help dogs and their people live better lives together. Seeing confidence grow, tails wag, and relationships thrive is a fantastic feeling.

...Being Veterinariana

Working in veterinary medicine has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Each day presents a unique set of challenges that push me to expand my knowledge base. One of the things I love most about the job is witnessing the compassion people have for their animals; their willingness to go above and beyond for their pet's health. Working with animals each day, you come to appreciate just how distinct every individual is. Their personalities and intelligence often surpass what most people realize, and it's an aspect of the job I'm deeply appreciative of.

I, also, am truly grateful for the opportunity to work in a team environment with individuals devoted to the well-being of our furry patients. Although many days can be quite the challenge, I often reflect on how the job feels less like work and more like an everyday adventure.

Ultimately, veterinary medicine has given me an incredibly fulfilling career.

...Being a Groomer

Many people have told me I don’t look like a typical pet groomer, and I always ask why. They say I don’t fit the stereotypical image. I can only laugh, because ever since I was a child, I’ve known I was meant to work with dogs. Making pets look and feel their best brings me joy and purpose. I love spending my days with dogs. Their antics can make us laugh or test our patience, but they never talk back, and the day flies by. No two days are alike—every dog brings something new, from different breeds and coat textures to unique personalities and grooming needs. I love that they may come in looking like a mess and leave feeling like a brand-new pup.

Grooming gives me creative freedom. Whether I’m adding color or just shaping a clean, polished look, I enjoy using clippers and scissors to bring out the best in every pet. From family holiday photos to weddings and special events, it’s fulfilling to help dogs shine for life’s important moments.

It’s also rewarding when we notice a health issue and help a pet get needed care. Groomers play an important role in a pet’s well-being, and sometimes our observations can improve a dog’s quality of life and longevity.

This career offers great job security, too—people will always have dogs, and dogs will always need grooming. It’s perfect for those who love staying active and working hands-on with animals. We perform essential services like nail clipping, ear cleaning, and de-matting, and I love educating clients about how to care for their pets between visits.

The most meaningful part of my work is the community I’ve built. Clients trust me with their most cherished companions and often become friends. I’ve formed bonds with both dogs and their people that have deeply enriched my life.

Grooming is more than a job—it’s who I am. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

...Being Animal Welfare Advocates

Our shared dedication to being animal welfare advocates in Houston is a large part of our life. The passion for protecting animals drives us to spend countless hours helping organizations like Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), The Houston SPCA, and numerous pet rescues. In short, we have a deep commitment to improving the lives of animals, fueled by compassion, personal experiences, and a desire to effect change. This love for animals stems from our belief that all of them deserve respect and care. We not only love animals, we love finding ways to make a difference, like chairing CAP's annual Mr. Magoo event and the 2012 “Celebrity Paws Gala,” which raised significant funds—over $800,000 in one instance—to support sheltering, rescuing, and rehoming homeless animals. We are especially proud of helping launch meals on wheels programs for pets at both Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and Northwest Assistance Ministries.

And speaking of love, we also love that the community recognizes our dedication as volunteers. We have been recognized with CAP’s Share the Love award, which acknowledges leadership in promoting humane education. We also believe it's important to foster community awareness and influence policies, such as Houston’s mandatory microchipping and humane pet store ordinances.

For us it's simple: the emotional reward of seeing animals thrive in loving homes and the tangible impact of our work on Houston’s animal welfare landscape is profoundly fulfilling. We are proud to have been involved in rescuing, fostering and/or adopting hundreds of pets over the last 25 years!

...Being an Animal Welfare Educator

Growing up in Houston's East End, my journey with Barrio Dogs is a direct extension of my deep love for the community. I founded the organization after seeing the profound need for accessible pet healthcare right in my neighborhood. To me, this wasn't just an animal welfare issue; it was a call to action.

Founded in 2010, Barrio Dogs is about more than rescue—it's about empowering our neighbors to become stewards of their own community. Our mission to "Educate, Empower & Transform" has made us a constant presence in the East End and now across Houston, with programs like Youth & Paws. We are always ready to help and advise, empowering residents to be advocates for the animals in their community.

Through free spay/neuter services and educational materials, our purpose is to transform the lives of animals and the people who love them. The thousands of volunteer hours logged since our beginning are a testament to our community’s dedication. While we are not a rescue group, we believe it’s everyone's duty to help with Houston's homeless dog crisis. We've helped many former street dogs find homes, including sweet Nova (pictured), who is looking for a foster or adopter.

I'm also incredibly proud that our work fosters a new generation of leaders. A good leader’s duty is to lift up others, and my hope is that long after I am gone, others will carry on our mission, ensuring they continue to advocate for the voiceless. My work with Barrio Dogs is my purpose because it allows me to serve the community I love so much.

...Being a Wildlife Volunteer

Randolph Watson, Wildlife Volunteer at Houston SPCA with a great horned owl, an ambassador bird at the Houston SPCA Wildlife Center

Why do I volunteer at the Houston SPCA Wildlife Center? Easy, because I love animals. I enjoy giving back to my community. Wildlife rehabilitation is a great way of giving back by helping the animals that make our communities beautiful.

Volunteering at the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center has enriched my life in many ways. I am more aware of their presence in my day-to-day life in the city.  I now see and hear the wide variety of birds, reptiles, and small mammals who share my neighborhood – neighbors I didn’t notice before.

I also have a greater appreciation for the important roles these animals play in our community's quality of life. They are essential for our healthy gardens, green spaces, and waterways. They inspire creativity and imagination. They remind me of the beauty of the natural world.

Helping injured or orphaned animals gives me a sense of fulfillment. I am rewarded daily by being just a small part of the countless success stories at the Wildlife Center, where we see more than 16,000 animals each year. Many of these stories are common: baby squirrels and opossums separated from their parents, and migratory birds exhausted after flying thousands of miles.

Other stories are quite memorable, such as the western rat snake that came into our care after he swallowed a ceramic egg in a chicken coop, the 300 baby egrets and Mississippi kite nestlings that were rescued and triaged at the Center after they were blown out of their nests by Hurricane Beryl in 2024, and a red-tailed hawk whose wing and tail feathers were damaged by a refinery flare.  We provided months of treatment, and after a full molt, released the hawk back into his natural habitat.

...Being a Pet Photographer

Ihave spent more than sixteen years photographing families, but animals bring an entirely different energy to the studio.

Pets are a bit like toddlers: adorable, unpredictable, and quick to lose interest. I usually have their attention for only a few minutes before my funny noises stop working, so every second matters. Occasionally, a well-trained pet arrives and everything runs smoothly, but more often the challenge is part of the fun. Over the years I have learned a few tricks, such as finding out what words or phrases make their ears perk, keeping a pocket of treats ready for food-motivated friends, and letting them set the pace so they stay comfortable.

Photographing pets teaches me something new every single time. Some need to sniff every corner of the studio before they can relax and settle in. Others bound through the door ready to play, tail a-wagging! Watching personalities unfold, from shy and careful to spirited and bold, and capturing that in a photograph is what excites me during every "adventure."

Most of all, I love photographing pets because they are important members of the family. My dog Jojo reminds me why it is so meaningful to include pets in family portraits. He is a five-year-old Finnish spitz mix we rescued during Covid and the first dog I have ever had. Now I cannot imagine my life or my home without him, and I know many of my clients feel exactly the same.

Pet Safety Tips for a Spook-tacular Night

Halloween might be a treat for us humans, but it can be a tricky time for our furry friends. With all the costumes, candy, and commotion, it’s easy for pets to get spooked—or worse, end up in danger. Whether you're hosting a party or heading out for trick-or-treating, here are some paws-itively important Halloween safety tips to keep your pets safe and sound.

Keep Candy Out of Paw’s Reach

It may be delicious for us, but Halloween candy can be seriously scary for pets.

❖ Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats—especially dark chocolate and baking chocolate

❖ Sugar-free candies with xylitol can cause liver failure in dogs

❖ Candy wrappers can be choking hazards or cause digestive blockages

❖ Tip: Store candy in closed containers far from curious noses

Costume Caution

Dressing up your pet? Make sure they’re more boo-tiful than bothered.

❖ Only use pet-safe costumes that don’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing

❖ Avoid outfits with small, chewable parts like buttons, bells, or loose strings

❖ Introduce the costume slowly—let your pet sniff and explore it before wearing

❖ Tip: If your pet looks stressed, skip the costume. A festive collar or bandana works just fine

Door Duty Dangers

Trick-or-treaters mean your door will be opening and closing all night.

❖ * Pets might dash outside in the excitement or fear

❖ * Loud costumes and masks can frighten animals and trigger anxiety

❖ * Tip: Keep pets in a quiet, secure room away from the front door during peak hours

Decor Dilemmas

Those glowing jack-o’-lanterns and spooky decorations might delight humans—but they’re not pet-proof.

❖ Candles can easily be knocked over by wagging tails or curious paws

❖ Fake cobwebs and string lights pose choking and electrical hazards

❖ Pumpkins are okay in small amounts—but moldy ones are a no-go

❖ Tip: Stick to flameless LED candles and keep all décor out of reach

ID, Please

Even the best-behaved pets can get startled and bolt.

❖ Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags

❖ Microchips are a great backup in case collars come off

❖ Tip: Snap a current photo of your pet just in case they wander off

This Halloween, make sure the only thing that’s scary is your costume—not your pet’s night.

With a little preparation and a lot of treats (the pet-friendly kind), everyone can have a tail-wagging good time.

VERGI 24/7 Has Moved!

An Exciting New Space for the Emergency and Critical Care You Know And Trust!

After decades serving Houston in the same trusted location, VERGI 24/7 is excited to announce that we have moved! Our new hospital will be located less than a tenth of a mile down the feeder (from our current location) at 8800 Katy Freeway, Suite 107. The move, completed by October 1, marks an important milestone in our mission to provide advanced, compassionate emergency and critical care for your pets—without compromising accessibility or comfort for the human part of the equation. Our commitment will always be to pets AND their humans.

We have been proud to call our current building home for all of these years, but as our patient volume and services continued to grow, it became clear that it was time for a space that could better support the needs of our patients, clients, and team.

What’s New in Our Future Home?

Our new VERGI 24/7 facility has been thoughtfully designed

with both pets and their people in mind. You'll notice improvements the moment you walk through the door, starting with a redesigned, more spacious lobby. We’ve added built-in tables to the seating areas to accommodate personal devices, beverages, and more. Refreshments will also be available, including a beverage station and snack machine to help make wait times a bit more comfortable.

We understand that some visits are emotionally difficult. In the

new location, we were able to create a space for a dedicated grief room, offering a gentle, private space for end-of-life care, quiet reflection,  and moments of whispered final good-byes to best friends.

Our clinical upgrades and additions include:

❖ More exam rooms to reduce wait times and improve flow

❖ A larger cat room, offering a quieter, more secure space tailored specifically to our feline patients

❖ A bigger isolation room for pets with infectious conditions, keeping all patients safe

❖ An added surgical table, doubling our capacity to perform life-saving procedures

❖ A CT scan room, expanding our diagnostic capabilities

❖ An oxygen generator, allowing us to support critical patients more efficiently

A Bigger Space, The Same Commitment

Though our location is changing, our core values and dedication to high-quality emergency and critical care remain the same.

Bilingual Advantages The Importance Of Translating In A Veterinary Setting

Growing up in a Spanish speaking household, I did not learn English until I started pre-school. You go from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish with everything you do daily. While it can be easy for one person, it can be difficult for another, especially during a stressful situation.

Growing up I had always known I wanted to help animals, but I never knew I would be helping them in a much deeper way by being able to speak another language. I would translate almost everything for my parents. One day I went to a doctor’s appointment with my mom and the doctor asked if my mom would like an interpreter. At the time I was surprised since this was the first time this was offered to her. Once the interpreter arrived, I

felt relieved. Relieved from the stress and pressure I felt to make sure I knew all the words both in Spanish and English to be able to properly communicate to both my mom and the provider. I know how it feels to be in the position of trying to translate for someone when there is no professional help available.

Vet visits can be stressful for pet owners, especially if their pet is sick or injured or when people cannot find the right words to fully express what is going on with their pet. Translating in a veterinary setting is vital for animal safety, pet owner understanding, legal compliance, building trust, and quality of care. If we are unable to understand one another (pet owner to care provider), this can affect their pet’s health, treatment, and care. Miscommunication on

the other hand can lead to feeling anxious, frustrated, or doubtful about whether the pet is receiving the right care.

Caregivers want to know and fully understand what is happening with their pet. It is of great importance that the seriousness of a condition is explained thoroughly to ensure 1) all details are covered and questions answered, 2) that veterinary professionals understand the history that the pet owner is giving, and 3) to ensure the pet owner understands the diagnosis/treatment that is indicated for their pet. This helps to reduce stress and makes the caregiver feel included.

Pet owners often must make big decisions, for example approving surgery, choosing between treatment plans, deciding on end-of-life care, and approving

financial choices. Translating for these families guarantees they can make those decisions confidently, knowing the complications, costs, and benefits.

Being able to translate brings respect and inclusiveness anywhere, however, it is highly accentuated in a large, growing and culturally diverse city like Houston. According to the U.S Census Bureau, Spanish is the second most spoken language in Houston. Awareness of diversity helps to break down stereotypes and reduce prejudice. There are multiple services that can help with an online interpreter. If you ever need assistance with translation of a language, please let your veterinary clinic know.

Why and How to Train Your Cat A

Practical Guide

Training a cat might seem like a contradiction, but it's not only possible — it’s incredibly useful. Cats are highly intelligent animals, and with a little time and patience, they can learn behaviors that are not only entertaining but also life-saving.

Why Train Your Cat?

Training strengthens the bond between you and your feline friend. It provides mental stimulation, helps manage behavioral issues, and can even make routine tasks like vet visits much easier. One of the most important reasons to train your cat is safety. A well-trained cat can respond to a recall command in an emergency, such as a fire or escape situation.

Understanding MarkReward Training

A widely used method in cat

training is mark-reward training — commonly known as clicker training. This technique pairs a distinct sound (the "marker") with a reward, helping your cat identify exactly what behavior earned the treat.

While a clicker is commonly used, some cats may find it too loud. Alternatives include a soft tongue click, a unique word, a short whistle, or a quiet pen click. The key is consistency and ensuring the sound is only used during training to avoid confusion. Before beginning any training program, especially for behavior issues, it’s wise to consult a feline behaviorist or veterinarian.

Target Training: A Starting Point

A great first step is target training, which uses your cat’s natural curiosity to encourage interaction. For example, you might train

your cat to touch their nose to a specific object (like a stick or your finger). This simple trick can evolve into more complex commands like moving to a specific spot or performing agility moves. Target training also becomes a foundation for behavior modification. If your cat tends to jump on counters, you can redirect that behavior by giving a command like “go to mat” and rewarding them for following it. Over time, your cat learns that cooperating with you is more rewarding than exploring forbidden spaces.

Reducing Stress with Positive Associations

One of the most common challenges cat owners face is getting their cats into carriers. Through mark-reward training, you can teach your cat to associate the carrier with treats and praise. Eventually, they may even enter

the carrier on cue, making vet visits much less stressful for both of you.

Leash Training and Social Introductions

Leash training is another valuable skill. Once your cat is comfortable with a harness, they can learn to walk beside you for safe outdoor adventures. It’s also useful during gradual introductions to new pets or family members, helping you control the situation and reduce anxiety.

Final Thoughts

Training your cat isn’t just a party trick — it’s an investment in their well-being and your peace of mind. With consistent practice and positive reinforcement, your cat can learn a wide range of helpful behaviors. And in an emergency, those skills might even save their life.

Blessing of the Animals in October

Each October, many churches in Houston (and across the country) open their doors—and their courtyards—to creatures great and small for a heartwarming tradition: the Blessing of the Animals. Rooted in the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, this event is a joyful celebration of the bond between humans and their beloved pets.

Typically held the first weekend of October, these ceremonies

welcome dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, and even the occasional goat or turtle. Clergy offer prayers and individual blessings, often accompanied by holy water, as a way to honor the animals that bring companionship, comfort, and love into our lives.

While the event has religious origins, it’s inclusive and open to people of all faiths—or none at all. At its heart, the Blessing of the Animals is about gratitude. Whether your pet is a longtime companion or a recent rescue,

taking a moment to recognize their role in your life can be a powerful and emotional experience.

Many churches also use the opportunity to support local animal shelters or pet-related charities, collecting donations or featuring adoptable animals on site. It’s not uncommon to find community festivities alongside the blessing—think pet costume contests, photo booths, and treats for two- and four-legged attendees alike.

The atmosphere is one of joy with all of the different animal sounds and species all in attendance to be blessed. The event offers an opportunity for a profound sense of connection—between people and pets, neighbors and communities, and the spiritual with the everyday. Pets must be leashed (or crated) for everyone’s safety but even if your pet cannot attend, a photo of your pet is welcome. In this moment, all creatures truly are part of one beloved family.

Rare and Remarkable New Addition

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight the Eastern Bongo. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

It’s a boy! The Houston Zoo has welcomed an eastern bongo calf to its herd.

Bongos are one of Africa’s most

endangered antelope species with an estimated 100 bongos left in the wild. The calf was born in June 25, weighing 46 pounds, and was

named Hamish by his animal care team. The calf lives with the Zoo’s herd of female bongos including mom, Cara, and little Franny. Bobby, the Zoo’s 10-year-old male is the calf’s father. Guests can see the new addition in the bongo yard located next to the okapis in the African Forest.

Eastern bongos are native to the forests in central Africa.

Contrary to what some may think, the common name “bongo” has nothing to do with drums; it is an African tribal name that means antelope. Both males and females have spiraled horns made of keratin, the same as human fingernails and hair. They have a chestnutcolored coat with 12-14 creamcolored stripes on their side that provide camouflage from predators. Baby bongos are known to lie still in the undergrowth for a

week or more after birth, with their mother returning regularly to nurse its calf.

Bongos have a prehensile tongue that is used for grasping. They usually browse on low shrubs but will sometimes stand on their hind legs to reach for leaves seven or eight feet off the ground. In the wild, they sometimes eat dirt as well as pieces of burned wood from lightning-killed trees to obtain salt and other minerals. Bongos will often wallow in the mud, coating their horns in a nice layer of mud. After the mud has dried, they will rub it off on a tree, thereby polishing their horns.

The new calf has an older brother, two-year-old Harris, who will move to Houston Zoo’s sister zoo, Taipei Zoo, in the fall to help enhance the genetic diversity of its species in east Asia. The Zoo made the announcement alongside Taipei Zoo, Houston First and EVA Air, the airline sponsoring Harris’ flight.

Guests can help save wild bongos by visiting Hamish at the Houston Zoo. A portion of each ticket and membership supports bongo conservation through field partnerships in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Zoo works with local communities and

organizations to protect bongos’ habitats by removing snares in the areas where the antelopes live and by restoring forests through community-led reforestation.

“If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected.”

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS

Flying High: A Visit to Houston Zoo’s New "Birds of the World" Exhibit

It never ceases to amaze me the variety of creatures God has made! For sure, that includes birds that come in literally all shapes and sizes. In July, I had the opportunity to preview the Houston Zoo’s newest marvel: the Birds of the World exhibit. It’s the final (and feathered) addition to the Zoo’s ambitious Keeping Our World Wild Centennial Capital Campaign.

The exhibit officially opened on August 30, 2024, and it’s nothing short of transformational. Since the campaign launched in 2018, the Zoo has unveiled a series of conservation-driven experiences like the Texas Wetlands, the South America’s Pantanal, and the Galápagos Islands. Birds of the World brings it all home, offering an immersive journey across continents through three massive aviaries.

On the day of the photo shoot, it was late July and the Houston heat was in full force. I was dressed for fall—sweating through a long-sleeve shirt more suited to our October issue—but I put the uncomfortable heat out of my mind as I was allowed to enter the exhibit in my version of "stealth", so I wouldn't alam the birds. It was a little disconcerting when they would make a noise, flap their wings and move about, but that is also what made it so awesome to be so close to them!

The African Savanna aviary is designed to mirror the open landscapes of Africa. It features an impressive cast of avian residents, including vultures, hamerkops, and, of course, the showstopper: the grey crowned crane. Tall and statuesque, with a golden halo of feathers crowning its head, the crane was utterly mesmerizing. Its plume alone is worth the visit, and its commanding presence makes it easy to understand why this species has become a symbol

of conservation efforts. The Zoo collaborates with Dr. Olivier Nsengimana and the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association to protect these endangered birds in the wild—an inspiring connection between local education and global impact.

Elsewhere in the exhibit, visitors can explore the blue hues of songbirds like grosbeaks and buntings in the North American Woodlands or see the Chilean flamingos in the South American Wetlands while learning about Bird Friendly® coffee. This coffee is grown using sustainable practices that maintain the forest canopy, providing vital shelter and food for migratory birds and other wildlife. By purchasing this coffee, visitors can contribute to conservation…that is so cool! I never knew there was such a thing as bird friendly coffee. I always learn new things when I visit the zoo!

Take a day to visit the Houston Zoo and see the Birds of the World exhibit—it’s an invitation to care, connect, and conserve. And I must say that October is a wiser choice than July for a visit!

A: One of the biggest safety issues I’ve seen is dogs being walked off-leash. Houston has leash laws for a reason, it protects both pets and people. I’ve also learned to always keep a safe distance from off-leash dogs when I’m with a client’s pet. Safety must come first, always.

Q: What are the most important questions pet parents should ask when looking for a dog walking or pet sitting service to ensure the right fit?

A: In addition to references, ask about bonding and insurance, how long the business has been operating, and whether the provider has First Aid and CPR training for pets. These are key to ensuring both professionalism and peace of mind.

A: I feel truly blessed to be part of such a wonderful community of pets and pet owners. Helping keep pets healthy, safe, and happy is incredibly rewarding. For more than 20 years, I’ve worked for myself doing what I love, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Giving back and supporting the community is very important to me, and I’m grateful for every opportunity to do so.
