PAWS FOR SENIOR PET HEALTH Ensure Your Pet’s Senior Years Are Happy & Healthy

It’s estimated that only a small percentage of senior pets receive regular wellness tests and examinations, which can limit life expectancy and overall health. This being the case, we encourage you to “paws” during the month of September, which has been deemed Senior Pet Wellness Month, and take the proper precautions to ensure your aging pets stay happy and healthy. Be sure they eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise and receive the appropriate health screenings.

To keep your pet healthy and guarantee his or her senior years are happy, CONTACT US TODAY, AND ASK ABOUT OUR SENIOR DOG AND CAT CARE!

Always walk your pet when the temperature feels comfortable to you. Generally, evenings are the best time since it is cooler than daytime.

WHY DOES MY CAT BITE AT MY LEGS WHEN I AM RESTING?

- MRS. DOUGLAS

Young cats sometimes find that biting is a form of playtime yet cats tend to develop this bad habit as the act elicits a response and attention. Unfortunately, this problem can worsen as you talk or pet your cat in response. Why does your dog pant? And why the wet puppy nose? pus are the only egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes. Due to their low metabolism and stress resistance, echidnas can live to be 45-50 years old. The female lays a single soft-shelled, leathery egg and deposits it into her pouch where it is held for ten days before hatching. The young echidna, called a puggle, is then held in the pouch for two to three months before being expelled.

Kangaroo Also from Australia is the kangaroo. About 34 million make their home down under. That’s one hopping place! The average speed for a red kangaroo is about 13–16 mph, but speeds of up to 44 mph can be attained over short distances. Kangaroos have chambered stomachs similar to cattle and sheep. They regurgitate the vegetation they have eaten, chew it as cud, and then swallow it again for final digestion. Groups of kangaroo mobs have 10 or more kangaroos

Bearcat The bearcat, AKA the binturong, is a treedwelling mammal from Southeast Asia. Agile like a cat, these creatures are adept at maneuvering through the canopy and less adept on ground, walking flat-footed like a bear. Just to totally confuse you, the bearcat is neither a bear nor a cat, but belongs to the civet and mongoose family.

Caracal The caracal is native to Africa, Central Asia, Southwest Asia and India. The cat’s name comes from the Turkish word “karakulak”, which means “black ear”. Most are around 3 feet long. A distinguishing feature of the caracal is the long black tufts on the back of the ears, roughly 2” long. Males can weigh up 40 lbs, and females up to 35 lbs.

thoughts about those who say keeping animals in captivity is cruel and that these creatures should be living their lives in the wild. He notes, “It’s true 50 years ago zoos were not providing the best environment for animals. However, today, accredited zoos work to build naturalistic habitats and provide great enrichment for their animals. We work hard to provide funds for conservation around the world and hope to ‘touch the heart to teach the mind’. By seeing a lion or a tiger in a zoo, we hope that our visitors will love them and be inspired to help their cousins in the wild.” Yes, this is an ongoing dialogue about wild animals that anyone associated with a zoo will be questioned about and it’s understandable that not everyone will agree, but when you meet a conservationist like Jack that has traveled to hundreds of locations observing animals with names that most of us cannot even pronounce, his opinion seems pure and his experience on the subject is unimpeachable. After a few more questions, I finally get to pose the question that PetTalk’s Facebook fans were most curious about. “What animals do you have at home?” I ask, thinking it will be an exotic group of critters. He replies simply, “A yellow Lab”. My time for the interview is up and I have to sadly relinquish the momentary hold on my idol and pass the baton to the next newshound. There is definitely one thing you know for sure once you meet Jack; he is Houston PetTalk Magazine

There is no way to measure the impact Jack has had on bringing awareness and knowledge to the masses as it relates to learning about and saving animals in the wild. SAFE

Saving Animals From Extinction

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) created the SAFE program to save many species from extinction. Although over 100 spe-

cies face serious threats, the SAFE program is focusing on these 10 key species in 2015. In each of the endangered species listed, AZAaccredited zoos have collectively invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars in some cases. To learn about conservation programs for each species, visit www.aza.org/safe.

questions about how Houston became home to the 7 big apes. First she explained that the gorillas are in two groups that are kept separate at all times. The first group, “the bachelors”, consists of Chaka (age 31) who is a silverback, plus Mike (age 23) and Ajari (age 14) who are referred to as “blackbacks” because they have reached the age where they leave their family group and begin to travel with other male bachelors. The second group, the “family”, includes Zuri (age 31), Holli (age 25), their daughter Sufi (age 13) and Binti (age 40). Family groups are typically made up of one dominant male, several females, and their offspring. The two groups are rotated between an indoor and outdoor

But there is something else unexpected in this outdoor lush landscape, a group of red river hogs who share the new abode with their ape counterparts. The red river hog is a type of wild pig that roams the forests and swamps of central and western Africa and would occasionally encounter gorillas in the wild. Every time you visit, you help save animals in the wild because a portion of your admission or membership goes toward protecting endangered species. CHOW TIME It’s Time To Get It Right

F

eeding your pets "grazing style" is old-school and is asking for an overweight dog or cat. Feeding at specific times helps regulate portion control, and gives your pet something to look forward to throughout the day. It's never too late to

start! The Animal Planet™ Programmable Electronic Pet Feeder features a large hopper that holds up to 10-pounds of dry dog or cat food. Its integrated LCD control panel allows you to set custom meal times and portions. Available on Amazon

That“Kleanbowl” Feeling

A

liso Viejo resident Alex McKinnon saw a problem with the way we use reptile food bowls normally. Plastic and other materials can store hazardous bacteria that can be harmful to your pet's

health and safety. McKinnon invested years of research, consulting veterinarians to discover a way to eliminate germs and bacteria found in pet food and water bowls. According to the pair, home sinks and dishwashers don't get hot enough to kill certain bacteria so they developed the Kleanbowl system for reptiles, a stainless steel outer bowl which houses a biodegradable, disposable inner bowl. The Kleanbowl system is about to go big in the coming months, rolling out at Petco stores nationwide. Look for the system at www.petco.com.

the ability to have 20+ levels of electronic stimulation, from vibrate and pulse all the way to intense continuous stem with tougher dogs. To put this in perspective, previous versions of the e-collar provided only three levels with the ability to nick them or apply continuous stimulation. This upgraded technology still doesn’t change the fact that there is a big difference between using them on a puppy to start the training process versus using the e-collar as a tool for proofing behavior that has already been taught and that you’re now cementing in permanency with electricity. Some dog trainers know how to use this tool properly but many do not. The trainer must understand how to accurately use the e-collar plus be competent to teach the typical dog owner the precision needed with this tool. Unfortunately for our dogs, there are too many trainers promoting the use of electronic tools who do not have the proper understanding of the collar and are often experimenting with trial and error. They have little to no background in training dogs for any working application and have just found a tool in which they can attempt to sell a quick fix attached to a slogan of non-force training. A trainer may be able to demonstrate the use of the tool on a particular dog to show its effectiveness. But keep in mind that some breeds can be trained far more easily than others and are very robotlike in their characteristics while others have totally different inherent breed traits and require more sensitive treatment. Misuse of e-collars results in ruined dogs. So here is a question: Does a seemingly faster, less time consuming approach really outweigh the permanent damage that can get done to your dog from someone who does not understand the application of a potentially harmful tool ? It takes months of committed professional coaching to learn how to use electronic collars properly and years to learn where, when and how to apply it to different dogs. While we are always striving for maximum dependability in our

companion dogs, I can’t tell you the last time I came across a dog and owner who couldn’t build strong dependability in their dog(s) behavior and conduct through leash and manual training collars when coached properly and who had the proper commitment to training with their dogs. Did it take a little more time and effort? Not really. Especially when you consider that if you spend time training your dog, your building your relationship with them. You should want to put in the time of growing your handling skills and strengthening your dog’s obedience. It’s a lifestyle of time and balance. And, with the use of manual training collars, it still requires the crucial input of praise. Training is about building a relationship with your dog, not remote controlling him or her like your television set.
