ENCOURAGE GRADITUDE inchildren

Our lives are busy but it is nice to slow down and reflect on our blessings occasionally In our family, we go around the table and say something we are grateful for This is a fun exercise that teaches our children to show gratitude for things otherwise taken for granted We may not remember to do this exercise every day but setting aside the time even once a week can make a big impact on your family

Here are some other ideas to help encourage gratitude in your children

Model gratefulness

The easiest and most effective way to start teaching your children gratitude is to model it yourself. Let your children hear you talk about the things you are thankful for “I am so grateful for this beautiful day today so that we can go to the park ” or “I am so thankful for a great job to pay for our home and our food ” When kids acknowledge the blessings they have in their lives, they will begin to take note and appreciate them

Serve as a family

Families who do service projects together tend to be families who appreciate what they have more. When children see that some are less fortunate, they will develop a desire to help others and make a difference. Not only do they become more aware of others and the blessings in their own lives, but they are more likely to give of their time and treasures for a lifetime.

Teach them to say thank you

From a young age, teach children to say thank you. Encourage kids to say thank you for any acts of service or gifts Even toddlers can be taught to sign “Thank you”. Writing thank you notes is a great way to provide kids the opportunity to thank someone for the gifts they receive and the time it took to purchase them. Encourage a “It’s the thought that counts” policy and explain that it isn’t the actual gift itself but the thought behind the purchase that we are grateful for

Take care of property

Teach kids the value of their property by showing them the importance of caring for their belongings. Clothes cost money so they should not be on the floor in piles Toys cost money so if one is broken due to misuse, do not rush to replace it

Say no

It isn’t healthy to say yes to every request your child has An answer of “No ” or “Not right now ” teaches children both the value of delayed gratification and encourages gratefulness for occasional treats If a child is allowed to purchase a toy every time he visits the store, this will become expected If the toy is purchased as a special reward or with their own money, the child will appreciate it much more

Teach them the cost of things

Parents know everything costs money and it adds up fast Allow your child to come along to the grocery store and have them help you find the best deal on food they would like to purchase or allow them to bring their own allowance and purchase something they would like Point out how much it costs when you go out to eat as a family or make a large purchase of groceries or other items the family needs. Take care to avoid blaming or anger when discussing the cost of items and use the opportunity to teach. When children understand the true cost of items, they are more likely to appreciate the purchase in the first place.

Give them chores

When children have chores and responsibilities to their family, they begin to understand how much work goes into cleaning, yard work, or other household tasks. Some families may choose to give an allowance for tasks completed which can help kids learn to budget and understand the value of hard work and in turn develop gratitude for the work that others do.

The main thing to remember as you encourage gratefulness in children is to model the behavior Thank them for their hard work, acknowledge and thank others for their acts of service, help kids understand the value of items, and give them responsibilities that teach them hard work

Becoming intentional with how your children teach them the value of things, services, and to slow down and appreciate the little things around them that may otherwise go unnoticed. Soon they will develop a habit of gratitude.

Waysto SimplifytheSeason

It's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, full of friends, family and festivities But research confirms a different reality -- most Americans have elevated stress levels during the holiday season. Instead of being full of good tiding and cheer, families often feel drained of time, energy and peace. Stressors such as shopping, party planning, financial concerns and trying to make the holidays perfect can make the end of the year hectic and overwhelming. These ten tips will simplify the season and make it merry and bright.

1. Focus on your reason for the season. Why are you celebrating? Is it for spiritual reasons? Maybe you want to spend time with friends and family or enjoy the spirit of giving during the holidays. Keep what is most important about the holidays at the center of your celebration. Reconsider any task or commitment that takes your time, energy, enjoyment or finances away from your reason for celebrating in the first place

2 Set firm boundaries around your time

With all the holiday volunteering, office parties and family gatherings, it's easy to overcommit yourself. This year, pick one project you want to volunteer your time to, or pick a variety of simple acts of kindness you can do with your family. Spend time with your friends and loved ones, but don't feel guilty if you don't go to every party or gathering.

3 Let go of Martha

One of the most stress-relieving things you can do at the holidays is set the bar a little lower. Martha Stewart is an elegant hostess, but you don't have to do everything the way Martha would to have a beautiful season. Embrace simpler decorations, meals and gift giving. Try shortcuts or holiday hacks. If you let go of expectations, you may be pleasantly surprised to find yourself content with a celebration you hadn't even envisioned

4 Farm out your to-do list

At the beginning of the season make a to-do list of what you want to accomplish. If you find that it is too long for time that you have, consider delegating some of the items. If you contribute to a Christmas club at your bank, you might even consider setting aside some of the money specifically so you can hire others to help with your holiday tasks. Have groceries delivered, and buy gifts online to avoid the holiday rush. Grocery stores also have a plethora of pre-packaged holiday foods that make delicious sides, cutting down on your time in the kitchen. Buy desserts from your local bakery, and shop at stores that provide wrapping stations. No time to clean the house? Hire a cleaning service just for the holiday season or ask for this service as a gift.

5. Gift others with experiences. Shopping at the holidays can be timeconsuming and nerve-wracking with crowds and traffic If you don't start early, coveted items sell out, leaving you scrambling for another gift. Ask those you give gifts to if there is an experience they would like to have. Tickets to the theatre? Family passes to an amusement park or aquarium? A relaxing day at the spa? Experiences give friends and family the opportunity to make memories and pamper themselves, unique gifts that are much appreciated

6 Set a holiday tea time

Recent research shows that drinking green and black tea has many health benefits, including promoting relaxation. Herbal teas, while not true tea, still help with anxiety and stress. In keeping with the holiday spirit, sip some calming peppermint tea, or try chamomile, lemon balm or passionflower

7 Take a hike

One way to tell your stress to take a hike might be to take one yourself. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins that trigger a happier, more relaxed mood. Aerobic exercise outdoors away from screens, phones and to-do lists can clear your mind and help you keep what's important in perspective

8 Reconnect with long lost friends and relatives

Meet with an old friend you haven't talked to for years and catch up Take some time off and visit relatives you miss seeing on a regular basis. Surrounding yourself with people you enjoy is powerful when you want to combat holiday stress.

9. Do something kind for someone else. You don't have to overcommit yourself to a charity or fundraiser to be kind. Small random acts of kindness can make someone's day Let someone in front of you at the supermarket line or let someone drive their car in front of you in the parking lot. Send an anonymous Christmas card with cash or a gift card to a college student or elderly person that you know is struggling financially Throw change in Salvation Army buckets when you pass them. Attach quarters in clear storage baggies to parking meters or laundry mat machines with a printed, positive message. Having a kind spirit chases away stress and keeps the season warm and full of hope.

10. Celebrate memories more than material possessions

Finances can cause a lot of stress at the holidays There is nothing wrong with downsizing the amount of money spent on gifts. Making gifts or drawing a name out of a hat and buying one gift for that family member can take off the pressure of buying gifts for everyone. A white elephant exchange (also known as Dirty Santa) is an entertaining and inexpensive way to celebrate.

Material gifts are nice, but most of us quickly forget gifts we have received in past years. The thing that we remember the most are the memories we make with friends and family. Make some happy memories of this holiday season and bid stress good bye.

Holding Holding

I’m making leftover turkey sandwiches–pieces of toast spread with mayonnaise and topped with thin slices of turkey and globs of homemade stuffing. The phone rings and I quickly lick my fingers, savoring the zip of sage, before grabbing the receiver

It’s my mother-in-law, calling with her annual dayafter-Thanksgiving request. She’s not asking me to go shopping Instead she’s calling with another question: what do my children want for Christmas?

Pretty soon there will be others e-mailing and phoning to find out the same thing. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents will all want to know what my children would like for Christmas

I glance at my three girls, scattered around our kitchen setting out food and plates, preparing for our lunch I know what their answer will be It’s the same every year. They won’t want much, not yet at least But they will soon enough, once I start prodding them.

The irony of the situation slaps me like a linebacker hitting his opponent. The words of gratitude, the remembrances of all the plenty we enjoy, have barely died on our lips. The leftovers of our Thanksgiving dinner have yet to be relished. And now I have to ask my girls what they want. What possibly could they want? The rods in their closets are crammed with filled hangers Bins of toys & accessories cover the toy shelves in our house Our two-car garage can only fit one car beside the bikes and outdoor toys. They have all they need and much of what they hadn’t even thought to want.

Every year the question of what my kids want for Christmas leads me to using tactics that would make a telemarketer blush. First I ask for their lists But rarely are those lists long enough to match the number of people shopping for them. So I shove magazines into their hands I remind them of things they’ve noticed on shopping outings I urge them to think of something more, some object they think they’ll enjoy.

I do these things in the name of pleasing others–pleasing those who love my daughters and want to show it by bestowing well-liked gifts I do it to please my girls, however momentarily, in the receiving of those gifts. I do it to please everyone but myself.

Each year when I badger my children for their wish lists, I feel a bit of myself slipping away That part of me that says to “let them be.” The part that says they can enjoy Christmas without so much stuff Am I selling us out, myself and my children? Am I bowing to consumerism to blot out gratitude so quickly?

What if we made no wish lists? Would we continue to be thankful for what we already have?

And my biggest question: how do I cultivate gratitude in my family amidst a consumer culture that has made an art of creating wish lists? How do I sustain the thankful spirit for more than 24 hours?

My biggest wish this year is for a holiday from the holiday rush. I wish for Thanksgiving to extend beyond one parade-and-turkey-and-football-filled day. I wish that Christmas would move back to its place (at least back to December) and stop stealing the show from Thanksgiving.

I’m thankful for leftover turkey sandwiches. I’m thankful for three grinning girls sitting around my counter eating them. And I’m thankful for grandmas who faithfully call each year to find out what these children would enjoy receiving The only thing I still need on this day after Thanksgiving is a little more time to enjoy how fortunate we are

My grip on the phone relaxes as I turn away from my children and gaze at the Thanksgiving decorations on the fireplace mantle in the next room.

“Can I get back to you on that?” I say to my motherin-law

I breathe a sigh of gratitude as she agrees to let it go for today, because today I plan to continue making a list of what we have to be thankful for And that’s the list I need most right now.

ACTIVITIES TO ENGAGE KIDS OF ALL AGES

ACTIVITIES TO ENGAGE KIDS OF ALL AGES

As a parent, you can help plant “STEM seeds” early in your kids

Unlike any generation before, your children are literally growing up surrounded by technology And that’s great news when it comes to future career opportunities!

With the big push for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in schools these days, you might wonder what you can do at home to boost your kids’ sense of curiosity, problem-solving, and STEM skills. Plenty, even with younger kids! The good news? You don’t need to be a math whiz or science buff to explore STEM topics with your kids.

Try these ideas with the kids of all ages in your family:

Help build STEM language at a young age Even with little ones, you can encourage them to notice their surroundings, ask questions, and pay attention to details. Observation is a critical science skill, so challenge your child to think about what she’s doing or seeing in the world around her.

Watch fun science videos together on YouTube Some standouts include NatGeo Kids Cool Science Experiments and Bayer’s Making Science Make Sense videos In Bayer’s kid-friendly films, for instance, kids get the low-down on intriguing topics such as What Makes a Curveball Curve?, Why Do Ice Cubes Float?, When Do Fish Sleep?, What Is a Shooting Star?, and How Does a Microwave Work?

Encourage participation in STEM clubs. In younger grades, you might find Lego Builder’s Club at school or in the community In some middle schools and many high schools, your child might be able to join an after-school coding, web development, engineering, or robotics club And, just for girls, check out Girls Who Code, which offers free after-school programs for 3rd-12th grade girls

Challenge her to teach herself. Many online opportunities exist to help your child boost her technology skills. For example, she can learn to code on Code.org and Tynker. She can create games and animations at Scratch. She can build a website using WordPress and upload photos and videos She can use the open-source MIT App Inventor to create software applications

Read with your kids. Let books open your kids’ eyes to new ideas and fresh perspectives and introduce them to unsung heroes/heroines and unfamiliar places

Tap into your personal and professional network to connect your kids with any STEM professionals you might know. Invite them to dinner for a casual chat over family dinner. Doing so gives your kids a better understanding of career possibilities, such as civil engineer, computer programmer, architect, financial planner, environmental scientist, or veterinarian

Bring science to life with hands-on family fun trips Visit a planetarium, arboretum, zoo, factory, science museum, nature trail, or observatory Explore STEM concepts at work though hands-on exhibits, demonstrations, and interactive experiences. In nature, bring along a notebook to record observations or sketch pictures.

Encourage your child’s interests Does she enjoy building model rockets or playing with gears? Buy her a science kit for her birthday Does he love to cook? Dig into the chemistry of cooking by researching culinary-science questions, like why apples turn brown once they’re cut

Participate in school STEM events. Your child’s school might hold family math night, science fairs, or tech nights Make it a point to go together, participate in activities, and ask questions to help connect your child with STEM concepts.

Create a “maker box.” Stock your home with supplies that encourage creativity, building, and invention Some ideas: small cardboard boxes and tubes, PlayDoh, PVC plastic pipes and connectors, LEGO’s, string, wooden building blocks, Duct Tape, Lincoln Logs, pipe cleaners, etc

Assign her a tech role. If your child has a knack for technology, ask her to help you figure out your smartphone or show you how to download photos to your laptop. Dub her your family’s tech guru to instill confidence!

Plant a garden. Get down and dirty with your kids as they learn about science and math from gardening They can calculate how big the garden plot should be, measure the planting depth of seeds, chart the growth of a tomato plant, record the weekly rainfall, and predict which plants will yield the most produce Talk about the life cycle of a plant, discuss photosynthesis, and identify parts of a plant from seed to stem

Great Election

Day Apps Great Election Day Apps

November 5 is Election Day nationwide and a great opportunity to teach your kids about the importance of democracy and voting. How about doing it in a way that’s both educational and fun? Here’s a list of some of the very best election-related apps available. They’re all completely free, so take a moment and encourage your kids to download an app – or three!

Cast Your Vote

(Available at: Apple App Store, Google Play)

Voting is the cornerstone of democracy. In Cast Your Vote, kids learn how they can educate themselves about candidates and make informed choices. They participate in town-hall meetings with fictional candidates, receive email updates about where the candidates stand on various issues, and get to research the candidates’ background and voting history. This app also lets kids track how their own views may have changed as they gather more and more information, and it concludes with a virtual booth where they can cast their votes.

My Vote Ballotpedia

(Available: Apple App Store, Google Play)

My Vote Ballotpedia is a great companion app to Cast Your Vote. Depending on where you live, this app provides information about reallife candidates that are up for election at local, state, and federal levels in your specific area. Kids learn where the candidates stand on a variety of issues, and they can share and discuss what they learn with friends and classmates. This app strives to be a non-partisan, encyclopedia of electoral politics.

Win the White House

(Available at: Apple App Store, Google Play)

Cast Your Vote and My Vote Ballotpedia teach kids about the importance of informed voting. Win the White House takes it one step further and lets them imagine what it’s like to run for office themselves and in this case, for President of the United States. They learn how to launch and raise funds for a campaign, articulate arguments and positions, poll voters to see which arguments and positions resonate the most, participate in candidate debates, and engage in targeted media campaigns. Kids are guided through the entire process, from primaries to the general election, by a virtual campaign manager who explains everything in a clear and child-friendly manner.

U.S. 270

(Available at: Google Play)

The presidential election is still a full year away. Kids learn in school that the road to the White House doesn’t go directly through the popular vote but through the Electoral College where candidates need at least 270 votes to win the presidency. The kids can use U.S. 270 to imagine different outcomes depending on which candidates are likely to run. This app has historical data from all previous presidential elections and will provide live updates of the elections as each state is called on election night. Keep it handy: it’s always a nail-biter!

Convene the Council

(Available at: Apple App Store, Google Play)

Convene the Council lets kids imagine that they’ve won the presidential election and are now responsible for U.S. foreign policy. As President, they are the head of the National Security Council and must respond to international incidents that threaten the security of the country.

They learn how foreign policy decisions are made, how to weigh the pros and cons of various options such aid and sanctions, and what government agencies and departments are responsible for carrying out which decisions.

Engaging Congress

(Available at: Apple App Store, Google Play)

Engaging Congress is a great companion app that teaches kids about another important government institution: U.S. Congress. They learn about the history of Congress, its role in the political process, and how its responsibilities relate to individual states. Most impressively, much of the information is relayed in the form of fascinating primary source documents and photographs that make the topic alive to kids.
