Now, I’m not big on New Year’s Resolutions. I feel like we should aways be assessing our world and ways to improve or adjust, if need be. However, I love having an opportunity to do it as a family. In this month’s article we break it down for all ages. If nothing else, it makes for great conversations!

I’m also really pleased we are looking closer at the Mental Health Epidemic our kids and young adults are facing. It’s a great take on where we are today, where we need to go and the resources to help get us there. It’s only too late to have the conversations when someone is gone.

Have the hard talks. make a plan and stick to it. Everyone will be the better for it.

Being the new kid on the block sailing out of Galveston, MSC, the largest cruise line in Europe,

had to pull out all the stops to draw the attention of the Texas market. You cannot have missed the ads featuring Drew Barrymore and Orlando Bloom boasting European style and American comfort and wondered if they really deliver. The MSC Seascape, named the best cruise for families overall by Forbes vetted, won big receiving Best Cruise for Families 2025 award from Cruise Critic.

Making Galveston a homeport, MSC Seascape launched in November and has definitely raised the bar for family-friendly cruising. Whether you are veteran cruisers or are considering a first-time family adventure this ship will not disappoint.

What makes a great family cruise a true holiday?

First and foremost it should be a vacation for every member of the family - one that provides happy memories and leaves the kids begging for the next one. As a veteran of many family vacations spent onboard a wide variety of ships I have four criteria by which I judge what kind of “memorable” the holiday will ultimately be. In each category there must be lots of options and availability.

Space - cabins and suites, public areas, designated areas, restaurants and dining rooms.

Activities. If you want to avoid the dreaded “I’m bored” there must be a wide variety and a plethora of activities with a wide and diverse appeal to all ages - adults included.

Food. Many options, diverse selection and tastes, flexibility as to setting and time.

Service and crew. If each family member can go home knowing the name of their favorite member of the crew, happy memories will follow.

My standard for family cruising is how many smiles, how much laughter and how much joy does the group experience every day.

How did SeaScape stack up?

Cabins and suites: With 2,270 cabins split into 12 categories families of all sizes and intergenerational groups as well as a wide range of budgets can be accommodated. The rooms are all nicely appointed and functional. Budget friendly options include the Premium Interior suites, which can sleep up to 5 and measure 301 square feet, a range of rooms with fold out sleepers and interconnecting options. If you want to splurge there is a 527 square foot two bedroom grand suite and children are also welcomed in the exclusive Yacht Club suites.

Public areas: Considering the number of guests on the ship there are many family-friendly options for wide open spaces with thirteen water features including a kids splash pool, six swimming pools, multiple jacuzzis, the Infinity pool on the stern with amazing ocean views, ping pong and foosball tables located above the Jungle pool and the Pirates Cove Aqua Park with designated areas for different age groups with waterslides, water cannons, an adventure trail and giant splash bucket. For adults looking for a date night, Seascape has a beautiful atrium with multiple bars including a Champagne bar and a sports bar as well as nightly entertainment in La Cabaret Rouge or the Chora Theater.

Activities: Seascape boasts one the the largest kids clubs at sea - Doremiland with 7,500 square feet with zones for 5 designated age groups from infants to age 17 and plenty of activities and amenities including crafts, LEGO fun, interactive activities and video games. Best of all are the new friendships that are made in the clubs.

There is a separate Video Game Hall and the older kids and teens will love the immersive XD cinema, F1, flight and motor bike simulators and for guests ages seven and older the very exciting Robotron - billed as the ultimate thrill ride - a hi-tech robotic arm that twist and turns high above the sea and allows riders to choose music, speed, and light settings for a one-of a kind experience.

Family-friendly excursions include snorkeling, kayaking, glass-bottom boats and wildlife experiences.

Food: With 11 restaurants Seascape has something for everyone. The selections at the Marketplace Buffet are huge and the selections are equally impressive with a wide variety of cuisines and a Kids Corner area with foods just for kids. High chairs and children’s menus are available in all restaurants. MSC has curated menu items with the help of the Observatario Chicco Baby Research Center.

Foods are clearly labeled with several glutenfree and vegetarian options. While almost any type of special diet can be accommodated, I have found that it is best to notify the ship of special requests well in advance. There are four complimentary restaurants which offer international menus that change daily.

I suggest checking out the main restaurants if the Marketplace Buffet is feeling too crowded during busy meal times especially for breakfast and lunch. Room service is always available and kids think it's a fun alternative. Be aware of the delivery charges.

MSC offers a service where kids can dine with the entertainment staff daily in the buffet restaurant and for a “Happy Dinner” option, kids are given dinner while adults enjoy appetizers, then are escorted by the staff to the kids club while adults enjoy their dinner.

Date night suggestions for specialty restaurants are Butcher’s Cut, premium steakhouse and Ocean Cay, an elegant seafood restaurant. Late night options include pizza and other offerings from the Marketplace Buffet. Chocolate treats and gelato are available at Vencho 1878.

My rating: MSC is extremely family oriented and looking forward to growing in the Texas market by attracting loyal cruise guests in this sector. Sailing on Seascape provides a reasonable option for a family vacation, but you must be aware of all the additional charges such as the drink packages, activity fees and dining options. While the ship is large, MSC has designed a spacious and beautiful ship with many areas designated for children and families making sailing feel special. The activities, amenities and spaces are all designed to provide many happy holiday memories for your entire family. On our cruise a good time was had by all. Give the new kid on the block a try and I don’t think you will be disappointed.

The elevators can get clogged so try to find the glass elevators at the back of the ship in your first couple of days before everyone else does. You can access them from Uptown Lounge: They go all the way up to the pool deck with incredible views and typically shorter waits as they’re a little bit more tucked away than the other elevators onboard.

MSC is not an all-inclusive cruise line.

Research the many package offerings, extra charges for family activities including late night childcare, drink packages including soft drinks, fitness classes and spa charges, gratuities.There are also unexpected family oriented things you can ask for such as booking a Youth Club staff member to escort your child to the appropriate club after they eat while you enjoy finishing your meal. While you are checking out the additional charges, also research “freebies” onboard.

Book the Kids Club on embarkation day as soon as possible as the days and evenings frequently fill up quickly. You can fill out an online form but you will still have to book once you are onboard. While KIds Club activities are generally free but be certain to ask about additional charges.

When most people think of Houston, sprawling urban landscapes and a bustling cultural scene might come to mind. However, nestled amidst the city's vibrant energy are some hidden gems for hiking enthusiasts. From serene paths amidst lush greenery to trails featuring captivating wildlife, the hiking spots in and around Houston offer a range of adventures for every family and nature lover. Here's a guide to some of the best trails that ensure a refreshing escape into the great outdoors.

1. Buffalo Bayou Park Starting right in the heart of the city, Buffalo Bayou Park offers a 160-acre oasis with breathtaking views of Houston’s skyline. The park’s 2.3-mile hike and bike trail is perfect for families looking to combine exercise and cityscape views. As you explore, keep an eye out for public art installations and the Waugh Drive Bat Colony, where thousands of bats make a dramatic exit at dusk.

2. Memorial Park's New Trail Network Memorial Park is known as Houston’s largest urban park and is a haven for outdoor lovers. Its newly expanded trail network covers over 30 miles of mixed-use paths. The color-coded trails vary in difficulty, catering to both novice hikers and seasoned trekkers. The park’s paths wind through picturesque gardens and around McGovern Lake. After a tranquil hike, families can enjoy a visit to the nearby Houston Zoo or the renowned Houston Museum of Natural Science, making for a full day of adventure.

4. Sam Houston National Forest For those willing to venture out a bit further, Sam Houston National Forest presents an excellent escape into wilderness just 50 miles north of Houston. The 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail is the main attraction here. While not everyone may undertake the entire trail, several sections provide varying levels of challenge and scenery—from towering pines to serene creeks.

5. Brazos Bend State Park About 45 miles southwest of Houston, Brazos Bend State Park offers a stunning look at Texas’s diverse ecosystems. The park features over 37 miles of trails, including the popular Elm Lake Trail, which provides opportunities to spot a variety of wildlife, such as alligators, birds, and deer. An observation deck offers panoramic views and an unmatched stargazing experience, thanks to the park’s George Observatory.

LEARNING DISABILITIES What Parents need to Know

O

ften, parents don't suspect learning disabilities because many people associate it with low IQ. But LDs affect children of all intelligence levels and has nothing to do with IQ. In fact, it isn't uncommon for a child with a learning disability to excel in one or multiple subjects, while struggling in another. Also, kids with LDs or ADHD may do well under certain conditions. Yet, in other situations, they have great difficulty.

Depending on the LD and severity of it, a child might struggle in all areas.

Forms of learning disabilities There are multiple forms of LDs. Some pose input problems, which means a child struggles with either sound or visual input. What happens is the information isn't processed correctly or gets stored incorrectly in

the brain. This can pose problems with the retrieval of information as well as short or long-term memory.

An LD can also cause output problems. This can sometimes be seen in motor skills such as handwriting difficulties. Another common problem is verbal output.

This is usually evident in kids that have trouble organizing their thoughts either in writing or orally.

Punctuation, grammar, and spelling may also suffer as a result.

Dyscalculia Dyscalculia is a math learning disability. Kids with dyscalculia may have difficulty learning to tell time, counting money or counting in general, learning math facts, calculating, understanding measurement, or performing mental math.

Approx 10% of American school-age children suffer from a learning disability (LD) and/or ADHD. About 4% of children have both.

Dyslexia Dyslexia is a reading disability, although the symptoms are not exclusive to reading. Children with this disorder may have difficulty with spelling, vocabulary, or comprehension. They may read slow, have trouble learning left from right, or have organizational problems with both written and spoken language.

Dysgraphia Dysgraphia is a writing disability. Poor handwriting and often, an awkward style of holding a pencil or even contorting the body while writing are hallmarks. A child may also have trouble drawing lines. With dysgraphia, kids can often better express their understanding of the material through speech than in writing.

Auditory Processing Disorder Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a problem with input. It isn't a hearing problem. Instead, the brain has difficulty processing sounds. As a result, kids with APD can be distracted by loud noise or struggle to follow conversations. This can be especially problematic when there's a lot of background noise, which makes it difficult to distinguish sounds.

Visual Processing Disorder Visual Processing Disorders (VPD) are also a problem with input. But VPD isn't a vision problem. It's actually a problem with the brain processing what the eyes see. It can result in a child bumping into things or being unable to distinguish the shapes they see. It can also pose difficulty in identifying letters or numbers or result in problems with visual sequencing, among other symptoms.

Nonverbal Learning Disorder Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) is similar to Asperger Syndrome and shows up as difficulties with social skills. Academic problems are sometimes present as well. But often, these don't show up until kids reach higher grade levels. Those with NLD may be afraid of new situations, struggle to make friends, lack common sense, and experience social withdrawal. Academic problems can include reading comprehension and working out math story problems.

ADHD ADHD is marked by attention problems and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Girls often have only attention issues, while boys are more commonly impulsive or hyperactive.

Symptoms can include difficulty staying on task or paying attention.

Yet, they often hyperfocus on stimulating activity. Children with ADHD may fidget or have trouble staying seated, interrupt, and act without thinking.

What to do if you suspect your child has an LD or ADHD The first step is to talk with your child's teacher and find out what the teacher has observed. Then speak to the school principal. Public schools are required by law to provide an assessment. This should include an IQ test, assessments of math, reading, and writing, and testing of processing skills. If your child is in a private school and it doesn't offer this service, you can request it through your public school district.

Once your child has received a diagnosis, your school psychologist should be able to recommend and help you set up services or accommodations for your kid.

Depending on the specific learning disability, your child may qualify for special education services under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or accommodations through Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Keep in mind, you are your child's best advocate. So read books and articles on your child's LD and learn how you and your school can help. Talk to your child's teacher about additional ways the teacher can assist your child. Most teachers are eager to help. Although, depending on the student-teacher ratio and the school's resources, it's sometimes challenging for teachers to do as much as they'd like. There are likely other kids in their classrooms with special needs as well.

If you feel your child isn't getting the help needed, talk to the school administrator. If that doesn't help, you may want to consider switching schools. There are many private schools that offer specialized curriculum specifically for your child's needs.

San Jacinto College professor and film music historian Jordan Tucker will present a lecture with live piano music examining iconic scores from classic Spaghetti Western films. In addition to touching on the life of Italian composer Ennio Morricone, this lecture will observe and analyze the soundtracks of The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and Once Upon a Time in the West. Modern and Contemporary Art The Menil Collection’s modern and contemporary holdings highlight a vast array of movements, materials, and styles, spanning the late 19th century to the present. Currently displayed in the galleries are more than forty paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs from the collection alongside important loans. Recent acquisitions on view include works by Dawoud Bey, Sam Gilliam, Christina Quarles, Winfred Rembert, and Deborah Roberts.

Louvre Coutre Louvre Couture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will present 36 ensembles and accessories from 23 fashion houses across two of the museum’s buildings in the galleries of Antiquities, European, American, Modern & Contemporary, and Design.

Each look is presented alongside works of art from the MFAH collection to create a dialogue between past and present. The exhibition also includes several rare and important loans from the Louvre Museum’s historic decorative-arts holdings, preserving the original show’s premise of placing the Louvre’s decorative-arts collections and the fine art of couture in conversation.

Yayoi Kusama “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity” Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, born 1929) was living in New York when she created her first Infinity Room in 1965.

Engaging the viewer directly, through reflections that project into an infinite distance, these installations combine aspects of Minimalism’s clean use of industrial materials with ritual and performance. Kusama returned to Japan in 1970, and subsequent works became increasingly personal. She marked her 80th birthday with Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity, which references the annual Buddhist Tōrō nagashi (Water Lantern) ceremony honoring one’s ancestors.
