As soon as the light fades on Thanksgiving Day, Neville the Christmas Elf shows up for his yearly visit with the Caliguiri family For them, Christmas is the big event come December
Jennifer Caliguiri and her 12-year-old son Ayden look forward to Dec 25 every year, and though they tie no specific religious significance to the date, they are a family who believes in the spirit and magic of the season
“Santa is a huge part of why we celebrate,” said Jennifer
Ayden agreed After all, he relies on his elf Neville to communicate with his boss –Santa Claus – when he falls behind on his gift giving
“Sometimes I’m too lazy to go to the mall (and buy presents) so I just tell Neville to tell Santa what I want for Christmas and for my mom and dad and then I’ll get it on Christmas Day.”
Christmas traditions are important in the Caliguiri home. Each year since 2009 Ayden has received a special Nutcracker figurine In 2015 he expanded his collection to include snow globes Now several years later, Ayden proudly displays his treasures on the mantle and makes sure to leave milk and cookies for Mr Claus
For many Houstonians, holidays in December look like they do in the Caliguiri home. But for others in Houston, a city bursting with ethnic and religious diversity, Christmas is but one of several holidays observed not only during this most magical time of the year but throughout all twelve calendar months.
And why not? The Bayou City is home to approximately 4 million people speaking more than 100 languages From near and far her people hail, and all come with their special traditions, including celebrations of Diwali, the Lunar New Year, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice and many more Indeed in Houston, the parade of holidays celebrated here can be found the world over
Just ask Paresa and Alessio Santini A Greek Orthodox Christian family, the Santinis regularly observe their faith’s saint’s feast days, including St Nicholas’ Day on Dec 6 The celebration, Paresa said, is marked with a special prayer said for the saint they’re celebrating and a recitation of a prayer the saint wrote. Often the story of the saint’s life is read, as well And, as with most holidays, there’s lots of delicious food to be eaten and shared with loved ones
What’s special about celebrating saints’ days is, for those of the Orthodox Christian faith they are often named after a saint, Paresa explained For instance, her son Alessio, 11, is named for St. Alexios. When the family celebrates St Alexios’ day, it makes for a special event in the Santini home. Alessio is treated to a special meal, given gifts and takes calls from loved ones and others in his faith community He also pays tribute to St Alexios, whose likeness has a special place in the family’s home.
“Every Orthodox home has a wall of icons with many pictures of saints on the walls, especially the saints the people in your family are named after,” Paresa said. “On your saint’s day, people will tell you ‘Happy
Alessio said he’s happy to focus on his faith and honor its traditions As an alter boy at his church, he said he’s found a way to do just that
“My mom said I should try to do it, so one day I did and I really liked it It was fun and so I just continued to do it,” he said “It’s important because it keeps me thinking about God and how he gave us life and keeps us safe ”
The richness of Houston’s holiday traditions is displayed through the actions of its people, many of whom cherish their unique rituals and relish in keeping them foremost in their home
Houstonian Nelly Obregon remembers childhood moments spent in Mexico celebrating Las Posadas, a Mexican Christmas tradition which means “the lodgings” in Spanish and is marked from Dec 16 until Dec 24
Celebrated for more than 400 years in Mexico and in other Latin American countries, thousands of Houstonians keep the tradition alive here in Houston The nine-day observance is rooted in Mary’s nine-month pregnancy and her and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in advance of Jesus’ birth when they were trying to find a place to stay It’s marked by a group of people going from home to home, being turned away several times before they find their way to the chosen home, the posado, where they are welcomed in, just as Mary and Joseph were welcomed into the stables
“People carry candles as they go from house to house singing songs,” Obregon said “At a posada you open your home for them, to the people you care about. You offer them traditional heartwarming food like tamales and rice, and the kids break a star piñata It’s just a lot of fun and a very sweet tradition ”
Like Obregon, Beenish Memon takes care to keep her holiday and religious celebrations rooted in those of her birthplace, Pakistan
A Houstonian for 10 years, Memon is mother to three children She said it’s important her children understand and appreciate Houston’s multicultural vibe, but as a Muslim mother raising young children, Memon puts special emphasis on the Islamic holidays of Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr and the holy fasting month of Ramadan
She does this by hosting henna parties during Eid celebrations and by celebrating family iftars, or breaking of the fast, every weekend during
“Before Ramadan we decorate our home and we light up the house, ” Memon said. “We also have a decorative praying corner ”
Besides fasting, prayer is especially important during Ramadan Memon said her son, who is the oldest child and has begun fasting with his parents, will travel to the mosque –the Muslim house of worship – to offer night prayers in congregation For Memon’s two young daughters, who are not of fasting age, she focuses on fun
“I print out lots of Ramadan coloring pages and we do a lot of crafts, as well,” she said
Making children part of any religious or secular holiday is common across most traditions, as is tailoring the traditions according to their ages Mark Newman, a Jewish father of three, has celebrated Hanukkah for years with his family Also called The Festival of Lights, Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Jewish Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army After their win, the Jews rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem and set to light the menorah, a candelabrum used in a Jewish prayer ritual However, there was only oil enough to light the menorah candles for one day, yet a miracle from God kept the light burning bright for eight days, hence the eight nights of Hanukkah
Like Memon, Newman has adapted his family holiday traditions as his children, a 14-year-old and 12-yearold twins, have grown
“When the boys were younger they would light their own candles on their own menorahs,” Newman said “On the first night of Hanukkah they would get a big gift, like a bike, then the other nights they would receive smaller gifts.”
Now that the Newman boys are older, the family shares one menorah and the gift-giving is pared down However, the spiritual importance of the holiday is preserved
“Every night (of Hanukkah) we all gather together and say our prayers and we all light the candles together as a family,” Newman said
No matter how your Houston home celebrates, be it in honor of religious tradition or secular holiday fun, common themes of family, the sharing of gifts, the breaking of bread and merriment shine through.
Blending FAMILY FAMILY
can be stressful! canbestressful!
ByLauraReagan-Porras,MS ByLauraReagan-Porras,MS
I divorced 13 years ago and remarried 7 years ago I have gained some insights about what works and doesn’t work about navigating the holidays as the mom of a blended family. As a marriage and family sociologist, I also facilitate co-parenting education groups for parents in blended families.
Holiday Suggestions
• Have realistic expectations. There is no such thing as a perfect holiday meal. There is no perfect gift that will heal divorce. There is no perfect holiday family activity that will make everyone suddenly feel closer There are only opportunities to connect Children may choose to connect, or they may not, depending on where they are in the process of accepting and feeling a part of the blended family. Wherever they are in the process is valid
My husband, their stepfather, invited our daughters to his parents’ Christmas Eve dinner but did not push them to do so. They were older and had their own traditions established with me as their biological parent prior to the new marriage. My girls chose to go to dinner with his parents but did not want to say for the gift-giving edinform.net since they really didn’t know all the extended family members Tweens and teens may need to take their time embracing an extended family.
Many experts believe it takes approximately five years to blend a step family David L Brasher, BCSW and family therapist states, “If you decide to be a stepparent, be sure to attend to the needs of your own children also. Above all, be patient with yourself, your spouse and all the children.
• Be Open, Adaptable and Flexible.
“My mom doesn’t make the turkey that way.” An actualized step parent will not be threatened and will simply respond by saying something like this, “Tell me how your mom does it. I might want to try it like that sometime.” If the child says, “Daddy’s Christmas tree has the ornaments I made when I was little.” A wise step parent might say something like this, “That must be really special to have those special ornaments on the tree. Will you help me make an ornament for our tree?” Biological parents might support the blended family dynamics by sharing with the child, “Not everyone does things the same way, and we can try a new way.” Learning to live with different people and different styles of conducting day to day life is a positive skill that can help kids of blended families for years to come in their interpersonal and professional lives.
• Choose Simple Family Activities
Keeping activities simple helps diffuse tension and helps new family members get to know each other without pressure The following list are suggestions that may lay the foundation for new family traditions
Watch a holiday DVD and string popcorn for the tree.
Go to a holiday movie in a theatre together. Go Christmas caroling around your neighborhood.
Go to church, synagogue or mosque together Volunteer together at the charity or non-profit of your choice
Bake holiday cookies together.
Make New Year cards for military service personnel.
Trim the Christmas tree together as a family
I grew up with the PBS show Mister Rogers Neighborhood. He was fond of saying, “I like you just the way you are.”
Family should be a place of unconditional love where we are comfortable to be ourselves Blended families must be the place where we practice this level of acceptance
There are many helpful resources for blending families.

Support Available
Divorce care groups, co-parenting education support groups and stepparent support groups can help parents discuss these all blended family issues but especially holiday related topics this time of year. Many churches and some non-profits agencies offer such groups and services. Parents and stepparents always have the option of working with a therapist.

How to Support Families with AutismSpectrumDisorder During the Holidays For families with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children, the holidays can be a complicated time. For many, the idea of gathering with friends and family is a welcome one, but they may worry about ensuring gatherings are comfortable for their ASD child.
BlueSprig Pediatrics compiled a list of thoughtful, helpful ways to support families with ASD children below.
If you’re inviting a family over for a holiday meal, the best thing to do is to ask in advance how to best make your environment comfortable and fun for their family Ideas include:
Helpprepareforchange. If the family is traveling to your house, send photos of your house in advance of their visit. For many children, seeing the house and decorations will help them know what to expect and may lessen anxiety
Similarly, it is great to sendphotosoftheotherpeoplewhowillbeinattendanceinadvance. This will help ASD kids get familiar of people who will be there and learn names
Beingmorespecificaboutfood. Really picky eaters. Favorite brand-name items. Some of the things available will make a difference
Determine whatmaydistractyourASDguest (i.e. scented candles or music) and offer to put away those items or lower music
Food can be a challenge for many ASD kids. Asktheirparentspecificsabouthowtobest accommodatetheirchild’smeal. For example, if portion control is a challenge, offer support monitoring around buffet tables or snack tables or plate food instead. Or for the picky eaters, offer to purchase the exact type and brand of food their child will eat/feel comfortable with Provideagoodiebagwithdistractions.
Set-upaquietroom or sensory retreat in the house with appropriate toys and devices
Reiterate to your friend / extended family that you don’texpectthingstobeperfect and welcome their family just the way they are.
And most importantly, if your friend or family can’t make the celebration, keep inviting them even if and reiterate that they are a valued friend and family.
Addedtips:
If a family is not able to gather outside of their home, there are still ways to support them including:
Offer to run errands for families.
Offer respite time for families including overnight stays for families who may have children who wake up often at night.
Since some families are unable to safely leave decorations up all month, offer to have host a “pop up” decoration day, putting up decorations for the family for a day or two to enjoy and taking it down shortly after
It’s all about supporting each other and celebrating their presence in your life
Fun holiday crafts for kids include easy-to-make projects using common household items like paper plates, craft sticks, and recycled materials, as well as simple edible crafts

WINTER BREAK OVER WINTER BREAK
By Gabriella Rowe
3 things you can start doing over the winter break to grow their passion for the pursuit of knowledge
Both teachers and parents know that cultivating great self-motivated learning habits often starts at home. One of the most important skills in all students’ toolboxes is the ability to propel themselves through their work without an educator or parent pushing them forward.
With the school year in full swing, children’s schedules have filled up with after-school activities and homework, making it easy to lose sight of those important habits amid our day-to-day hustle and bustle Why not use the winter break to instill in your kids some learning habits? Even though motivation is a very personal emotion that varies from child to child, there are three basic actions parents can do to encourage a love of learning Know their passion.
Start with their favorite toy or television show What interests them the most? Whether it’s dinosaurs, dolls or cars, use their passions as a springboard to focus on the process of learning Encouraging children to enjoy the journey stimulates them to ask important questions, like “why,” “where,” or “what if.” By leveraging their passions, we can help them channel their excitement and reward their appetite for education
Read, read, and then read some more.
Disclaimer: this doesn’t just mean to read to your child, or ask your child to read and do their homework But instead, as a busy parent, try and find time to be well read Talk with your child about what you read and what you find interesting. You are modeling the impact of learning on your life and showing how your interests start a deeper dialogue with those around you This chain of events will inspire your child to pick up a book or newspaper and start asking some of the same questions you ask. This relates back to sparking curiosity, which is at the heart of a deeper love of learning
Realize that you’re still learning, too.
In my opinion, this is the toughest thing to do as you’re encouraging your child to enjoy the learning process. If we already know everything (or at least pretend to), then we take away one of our child’s fundamental drives for learning: to be smarter than us! All children want to know more than their parents. But, if we are too quick to provide the right response or answer, then you’ll have removed a big part of the ambition they need to learn for the rest of their lives Instead, offer to help them with research, and ask many questions. Then, you’ll have modeled for your children the learning and problemsolving process you want them to adopt
Keeping these three tips in mind will help your child become a lifelong learner When you work at home to develop a true love of learning, your child will look forward to the process at school and know the journey never ends no matter their interests, learning style, or developmental stage.

In 2022, over 23,500 cosmetic surgeries and 244,000 minimally invasive procedures were performed on patients aged 19 and under with the most common surgical procedures being:
Rhinoplasty (nose jobs)
Otoplasty (ear surgery)
Breast reduction
While the overall number of surgical procedures has declined in recent years, non-surgical procedures like fillers and Botox are increasing significantly among teenagers, driven in part by social media
Why Plastic Surgery?
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), reasons to consider plastic surgery are divided between cosmetic and functional goals. For example, in the instance of rhinoplasty, sportsand accident-related injuries or a congenital malformation of the nose may affect a teen’s ability to breathe easily, a condition that can be corrected with surgery. Other teens seek surgery for purely aesthetic objectives These are the drivers we’ll explore here.
– Self loathers: A common goal associated with aesthetics-driven surgery is to improve selfesteem Houston-based surgeon Dr Camille Cash explains the unique transformations occurring in the body and mind of a teenager The changes are rapid and sometimes awkward, and they pair with external forces to shape the teen’s self-image–which, in turn, shapes self-worth “Pressure from peers, parents, coaches, and even the media to conform to a certain body type or ‘look’ can contribute to a struggle with self-image and selfesteem,” Dr Cash says
“And with teenage celebrities like Kylie Jenner admitting to having cosmetic procedures [at the age of 16, she had her lips plumped, and possibly had her buttocks, breasts and nose done, too], teens can feel pressure to go through extreme measures to conform to perceived beauty standards. Not meeting these standards can cause teens to feel less secure in their own physical appearance ”
Dr Cash cites a study from The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery that suggests patients’ psychological burden stemming from appearance-related issues, particularly breasts, was significantly decreased after surgery: “Authors concluded that surgery in this group may actually improve physical, psychological and emotional burden and improve condition of teenagers and attain bodily satisfaction, both for aesthetic and reconstructive issues ”
Dr Cash points out that cosmetic breast augmentation is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in girls younger than 18 years of age, as their bodies may not have finished developing, and they may not understand the risks or be psychologically ready to handle the outcome of the surgery. “Procedures performed in this age group are considered off-label,” she warns.
–
Stargazers and Selfie Citizens:
Dr Gilbert Lee, of San Diego-based Changes Plastic Surgery, takes the matter a step away from self-esteem For him, the aesthetic driver behind teens’ wanting plastic surgery is exposed in the book Generation Me [Jean M. Twenge], which talks about an increasing sense of entitlement and narcissism among today’s youth “I believe this type of behavior may be responsible for the interest in plastic surgery and aesthetic treatments among the younger generation,” Dr Lee says. “Younger people are embracing the chance to look like the celebrities and influencers they admire and to look better on social media and gain more followers ”
A 2016 survey of AAFPRS members confirms Dr Lee’s observations, reporting that one of of the two top drivers for cosmetic procedures is the impact of social media Compared with last year, 42% more surgeons reported patients seeking cosmetic procedures to look better in selfies, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook Live and other social channels. Eighty-two percent of surveyed surgeons cited celebrity comparisons as a major influence in patients’ desiring cosmetic procedures. “Social media presence and perceptions have become almost as, if not more important, than personal interactions for many teens and young adults,” says Dr. Edwin Williams III, President of the AAFPRS “We’re living in a time when someone’s profile, be it on Facebook, Instagram or a dating site, is often the first impression Millennials get of each other ”
AAFPRS further explores the “Kardashian Effect” or “Selfie Mania:” the influence of celebrities and social media on Millennials’ decisions to have facial cosmetic procedures “The year 2015 saw the phenomenon reaching beyond Kim-inspired butt injections, with Kylie and Kendall eclipsing their older siblings in the spotlight. Between their staggering Instagram following, high profile friends and endless stream of up-close-and-personal selfies, the next generation of the Kardashian clan spurred a flurry of interest in facial feature enhancements from their peers,” a 2016 press release from the organization reports
“The teen and young adult years are a highly impressionable time, and the more consumers are inundated with celebrity images via social media, the more they want to replicate the enhanced, retouched images that are passed off as reality,” Dr Williams explains “We are seeing a younger demographic than ever before seeking consultations and treatments with facial plastic surgeons all over the country.”
According to AAFPRS, the influence of celebrities and selfies on plastic surgery is not just a Gen X movement
Patients of all ages are becoming desensitized to plastic surgery as more celebrities come clean about their cosmetic tweaks Having a little “work done” has become less taboo In fact, 82 percent of surveyed surgeons reported that celebrities were a major influence in their patients’ decisions to have plastic surgery last year
ConsiderRegret
All the surgeons interviewed for this article agreed on at least one point: teens must understand that plastic surgery is not a panacea
A 2012 study [Predictors of cosmetic surgery and its effects on psychological factors and mental health: a population-based follow-up study among Norwegian females] seems to confirm the idea that at least at younger ages, plastic surgery patients are a more troubled group and the surgery didn’t help This study followed more than 1,500 teenage girls for 13 years, with the researchers not knowing who would actually have surgery in that time The 78 girls who did were more likely to be anxious or depressed and had a greater increase in those symptoms over the period than non-patients The study suggests that the girls who chose to have cosmetic surgery tended to have a history of subpar mental health to begin with, and having the surgery did not help the situation
“Every surgery comes with risks, and it’s incumbent on the surgeon to explain these risks and talk to you openly about how the procedure may align with your aesthetic goals, as well as the changes cosmetic surgery won’t make,” Dr Kutty says “It’s important to remember that, although a cosmetic procedure might address an aspect of your appearance that you are unhappy with, it doesn’t completely reverse your peers’ perceptions of you ”
In an article called “My Plastic Surgery Regrets” [The Daily Beast], author Michele Willens refers to “the guilt, the embarrassment, and the disappointment that life pretty much goes on as it was ” This can be a bitter reality for the teen who undergoes plastic surgery thinking it will change her social status, her self-esteem, and her life, then finds that she, and her circumstances, are largely unchanged
In the same article, New York psychologist Dr Vivian Diller discusses how she talks many patients through their conflicting feelings over the decision, asking what they expect in return, and for whom they are really doing it. “Cosmetic changes may seem superficial, but they are permanent and have far-reaching emotional consequences,” Diller is quoted as saying in the article.
Jenn Morson posted to her blog “I Regret Getting Plastic Surgery: My youthful desperation for a new nose has turned into an adult longing for my old face.” A piece of her writing has been excerpted here to illustrate how a teen’s identification of self-worth can changed radically and unexpectedly as he or she transitions into adulthood
“I had hated the nose I was born with for nearly my entire life I did not care that it was in some ways a part of my identity, that I shared this trait with my deceased Jewish mother No, I wanted it gone I wanted a ski slope, movie star, tiny button nose When people complimented my lovely brown eyes, all I heard was the non-existent slams on my clearly-hideous schnozz It was close to an obsession
Morson decided to have her nose fixed after a run-in with a sliding glass door that made the decision much easier to make
“My new nose was a perfect, glorious, acute angle As time passed, however, I started to miss my old nose, which seemed so ridiculous to me that I tried to just brush it off I had spent years looking forward to getting rid of it, after all, and I knew I looked so much better. But I didn’t look like me, and that was an unsettling feeling What had caused me so much angst turned out to be an integral part of my identity In putting so much emphasis on this one feature, I had neglected to recognize the beauty of imperfection. Sure, I could see it in other people quite readily, but in myself, I had grossly exaggerated a little bump into incapacitating self-consciousness ”
MakingtheDecision
AAFPRS offers the following questions for you and your teen to consider when deciding whether plastic surgery is a good move for him or her:
1 Why do you want to change your appearance? Discuss with your teenager why he or she may feel insecure Are the concerns well founded? One teenager suffered years of acne and was left with extensive scarring After he and his parents pursued scar revision surgery, the teen expressed that his biggest joy was not being teased about the scarring like he had been teased about the acne Teens who pursue facial plastic or reconstructive surgery are looking to feel more confident and have a better self-image
2 What feature do you want to correct? Physicians will not recommend an invasive procedure just so the teenager may look prettier. Surgeries that produce subtle results with minimal benefits are not recommended Rhinoplasty, including cosmetic and reconstructive (e g , correcting a nasal obstruction or cleft palate reconstruction), is the most popular procedure performed on teenagers. Other surgeries that may be appropriate include otoplasty (ear surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), chin augmentation, and scar revision
3 What are your expectations for the results? Before deciding on a procedure or treatment option, discuss with your teenager what they hope to achieve by changing their appearance Just because they alter their appearance does not mean that they will automatically become popular and get straight A’s. Your physician will ensure that there is no pressure from family or friends to have surgery and that the teenager fully understands the procedure and results
YourJobasaParent
It is our job as parents to ensure our kids feel secure and self-assured We want their lives to be free of hardships, both emotional and physical. But we would be ill-advised to either immediately shut-down or immediately embrace our teens’ interest in plastic surgery as a means of helping them Rather, we need to take the time to ask questions Drill down for root causes Explore other means of promoting self-esteem If, after these efforts, plastic surgery still seems a possible way to go, a surgeon can screen for maturity, motivations and expectations
If you find yourself scouring the Internet for a good plastic surgeon, be sure the surgeon you choose one that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery State laws permit any licensed physician to call himself a “plastic” or “cosmetic” surgeon, even if not trained as a surgeon
Another word of caution from Dr. Williams: “The commoditization of cosmetic procedures, both surgical and especially non-invasive, is increasing due to Groupon® and other daily deal aggregators as well as the prevalence of plastic surgery on TV,” says Dr Williams “When we see things like BOTOX® offered in gyms and salons, or on-demand injectables through new apps, this runs the risk of demedicalizing what truly are medical procedures that should be administered in a controlled environment by a highly trained healthcare professional.”
