It’s that time of year again. Mother’s Day. At worst, Mother’s Day means last-minute supermarket flowers, an hour-long wait at your favorite restaurant for lunch, and maybe a hastily signed card. You know your family’s intentions are golden, but sometimes it just feels predictable. But what if this year you took a minute to fantasize about what your best Mother’s Day would look like? And what if you gave your family a little hint? (You could even leave this article on the kitchen table, with your favorite idea circled!) We would be willing to bet that they would be thrilled to know how to best express their love and gratitude to you this Mother’s Day.
Spring Cleaning: You’ve been wanting to tackle them for months, maybe even years: those closets, or maybe it’s your garage that needs some TLC. It seems like such an overwhelming task all by yourself but what if your whole family pitched in without your having to nag and cajole them? With everyone helping out (with smiles on their faces!) you could get the job done in a fraction of the time. Imagine all your newly-discovered storage space!
Family Portrait: Some moms are great about scheduling these once a year But if you are the mom who gets stressed out just thinking about having to coordinate outfits and scout locations, take this opportunity to delegate. Let your family plan all the details – you just show up for the camera And better yet, make this an annual tradition.
Picnic in the Park: In Houston, May is still usually cool enough to enjoy a picnic outdoors, especially in the evening Your family could pack your favorite light meal (maybe some goodies from Central Market) or just a luscious dessert and gather some blankets for a relaxing picnic at your local park. No park nearby? Your own backyard will do when it means quality family time
Breakfast in Bed: If you are a night owl who gets up early every morning to make lunches, drive carpool and get to work, this gift can’t be beat. Your family allows you to sleep in as late as you desire, then serves you a delicious breakfast in bed. True appreciation for all those lunches made at 6am!
Family Movie Night: Mom’s Pick: Deadpool not your cup of tea? Tonight you get to share your more sophisticated movie preferences with your family. You know once they see Casablanca they will love it, even if they don’t immediately realize it.
Family Bike Ride: If your family’s bikes have been sitting in the garage collecting dust, pull them out and head to your choice of Houston’s 128 miles of hike and bike trails www.houstonbikeways.org.
Bowling: Feeling a little competitive on Mother’s Day? Challenge your family to an afternoon bowling match Your kids might not have any idea that bowling is not actually a game played on your tv.
Ballroom or country & western dancing lessons: Houston boasts several great studios where you and your hubby (or whole family!) can learn the basics of ballroom or country & western dancing
Rock Climbing: If you and your family enjoy athletic challenges, indoor rock climbing might invigorate your Mother’s Day. Most gyms offer climbing for different skill levels so you can each feel the exhilaration of reaching the summit!
iFly: Or maybe terra firma is not your thing – you prefer the thrill of being airborne. This Mother’s Day take it to the limit and check out indoor skydiving at Ifly wwwiflyworldcom
Mani/pedi: There’s nothing like a manicure and pedicure to pamper yourself A Mother’s Day gift card for your favorite nail studio might be just the ticket!
Mom’s Day Off: Every now and then we all need a break from our daily routines A homemade gift card for a Day Off for Mom (spend it however you want, while your family takes care of things at home!) might be the perfect way to recharge your batteries
Makeover for Mom: This time you won’t have to rush by those makeup counters at the department store. Your family has made an appointment for you to enjoy a makeover with your favorite cosmetic brand!
Massage/Facial: Along the lines of pampering yourself why not luxuriate in the experience of a massage or facial? A gift card for your favorite spa (or a surprise appointment on Mother’s Day) may be just what you need.
Personal Trainer: If you’re having trouble sticking to that New Year’s resolution to get in shape, you may love the idea of a gift package with a personal trainer
Landscaping: Whether your yard needs a full makeover or just some colorful annuals, the gift of a landscaper’s talents is one that will blossom with beauty for many months to come.
Fashion Consultant: Maybe it’s not just your dancing that’s stuck in the 80s – could you use a little help weeding through your closet and updating your wardrobe? Houston is home to several fantastic fashion consultants.
Mother’s Day Video Journal: Dad makes a video of kids sharing things like, “The most important thing my mom has taught me is…” and “My first memory of my mother is…” This gift will provide a treasured timeline of your role as a mother.
Photobook: A photobook is a lovely remembrance of your family’s most special moments from the past year and a wonderful new Mother’s Day tradition
ON YOUR MOST CHALLENGING
It's not always easy being a mom But even a mom with an extremely hectic schedule can find a few minutes for herself and learn the habit of "taking five" every chance she gets.
All you need is five minutes of doing what you want to do to get from the end of your reactive rope to a calm, centered place You deserve this and a whole lot more, mom. So don't neglect yourself, even as you strive to care for those you love.
Most moms never get enough down time Multiply this by ten for every additional child, traveling spouse, incrisis extended family member, volunteer commitment, and unforeseen schedule delay and it seems like any day can easily become a high-pressured day for your average mama
For days where everything seems to go off-course and nothing seems to go the way you had hoped, five minutes of downtime is not enough, but it's somewhere to start And certainly every mom deserves much more than five minutes to herself each day But, five minutes may be the most time a busy mom can grab in the next few hours. According to a study in the UK, over fifty percent of moms said they could go weeks without a single minute of time to themselves.
So, if your day has gone off the tracksagain-and you need to get your day back on track, grab the next five minutes you can and bogart them all for yourself. Here's a list of ways to take five when you need it most Get in the habit of giving yourself little breaks throughout the day and you will reclaim your calm, cool, and collected self. And isn't this the type of parent we all long to be?
Sip a cup of coffee or tea
Eat a piece of quality chocolate
Write everything in your head on one sticky note
Read a meditation or poem a day
Stare out the window at nature
Stand in the middle of the kitchen and twist, bend and shake
Go outside and stretch your legs a bit
Lie down on a carpet and try some spontaneous yoga poses
Go to your room and hit the bed with a pillow ten times
Do ten quick sit-ups and ten push-ups
Research the answer to a nagging question on the Internet
Pin a few photos that reflect your interests on Pinterest
Connect with three friends on Facebook
Upload photos you've taken lately to Instagram
Climb in bed, curl up, and rest for five minutes
Read three articles at your favorite magazine website
Watch some video clips at your favorite TV show website
Go to the Internet Movie Database and watch new movie trailer or two
Peruse your favorite section in an online newspaper
Skim blog posts by people you admire that were delivered to your e-mail
Pull all the shades, dim the lights, and turn on soothing music
Arrange and rearrange flowers in vases throughout your home

A Cheat Sheet to Get Ready for Next Year

Academics. How did each child perform academically? Does anyone need extra help in any subjects? How about in any specific areas within subjects? Do you need to request a different class placement for next year? Now is the time to do so, before school gets out.
Homework. How did each child manage last year's homework load? Do you need to work on improving organizational skills in any child? Does each child have a designated homework area at home? How about a way to keep papers sorted so they don't have to carry everything around? How can you set each child up for increased organizational success next year?
In-schoolExtra-curriculars. Was each child satisfied with in-school extra-curricular activities? Do you need to contact any teachers to ask questions about next year? Do it now before summer vacation begins. Most teachers will not be available over the summer
After-schoolActivities. How about after-school activities? Was each child satisfied with what they chose? Was anyone over-scheduled? How about under-scheduled? Do you need to contact any coaches or administrators to ask about tryouts or auditions for activities next year? Now is the time to collect important dates and ask about fees you will be expected to pay.
2.AssessPatterns
If one of your children is under-performing in school and seems to have too many activities, is there a connection? Should you beef up on tutoring over the summer or cut down on after-school activities next year or both? There is no one answer that works for every child, so consider what will best support and motivate each child based on personality and past experience. Strive for progress, not perfection. Let each child's experience be a unique journey that unfolds year after year.
3.SortPapers
Don't start your summer with a lot of paper and digital clutter Strive to retain only a few papers from each school year. If your child created many bulky projects, line them up for a quick photo shoot before tossing them in the recycle bin. Personally sorting through each child's papers and projects with her will give you insights about how to steer your child toward improvements next year For example, your daughter may have reassured you all year that her spelling was just fine But in reviewing her papers, you may notice points off for sloppy spelling across various classes. Now you know what she needs to keep working on over the summer
4.ContactAdvisors
Feeling stuck about what to do to help improve your child's school year? Do some research. Reach out for more help. See if the school can provide you with access to a specialist This is especially important if you are feeling upset about trying to meet any of your children's needs
yourself Parents often forget that there are resources, experts, and specialists all around them. You don't have to figure it all out yourself Rather than talking to friends or family members who may not know how to help, reach out in a more targeted manner and collect helpful data, so you can make more informed decisions for next year The answers are out there and your child is counting on you to find them
At the end of the school year, sit down with your child and have a conversation about supporting him to have a better school year next year First, congratulate him on everything he did well last year. Be especially complimentary about any improvements he made since the year prior Then ask what he would like to change next year. Cover all the angles: academic, homework, in-school extra-curriculars, and after-school activities You might be surprised by some of the answers you hear. Listen to everything he has to say and discuss what you learn with your spouse Then go back to your child with some concrete suggestions you think will help him have a better year next year He may not be thrilled with every idea, but if you emphasize a more positive outcome, you can probably get him on board Besides, summer is imminent, so he has plenty of time to get used to any ideas he may initially resist
Taking all these steps will plant what can improve more firmly in your memory when school starts back up again. But just in case you have a busy summer planned and you are ready to get on with it, why not make yourself a cheat sheet for back-to-school time?
Schedule. Before the school year is done, get out your calendar or scheduling software and mark down any critical sign-up or fee deadlines for next year's academics or activities Be sure to consider each child and cover each of the four angles: academic, homework, in-school extracurriculars, and after-school activities
ListItAllUp. While everything is still fresh in your mind, make a master to-do list with actionable steps you need to take before school begins, such as ordering special clothing, equipment or performing workouts to get ready for athletic training. Make sure children who are mature enough update their own calendars, as well Schedule dates to take care of any shopping that will need to be completed before school starts, so you can stretch summer out as long as possible
Relax. Once you have a plan in hand, you can kick back and enjoy your summer, knowing that you have learned all you can from last year Now you are ready to work together to help create a better year for your kids next year
Happy summering!

Today’s children are growing up in an era of increasing mental health challenges In 2023, more than 1 in 5 adolescents aged 12-17 were diagnosed with a mental or behavioral health condition Anxiety was the most common, affecting 161% of kids, followed by depression at 8.4% and behavior/conduct disorders at 63% Additionally, the CDC reported that in 2023, 40% of high school students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and 20% seriously considered suicide These statistics are staggering and underscore the urgent need for meaningful solutions
At Kidventure, we believe camp is more than just an experience it’s an opportunity to equip children with the skills and support they need to thrive That’s why we’ve intentionally designed our programs to foster emotional well-being, encourage social connections, and create an environment where kids can step away from the pressures of everyday life and just be kids
Summer camp offers a unique environment that directly combats many of the factors contributing to youth anxiety and depression.
Here’s how Kidventure makes a difference:
● Physical Activity and Stress Relief: Research shows that physical activity lowers cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone At Kidventure, campers engage in outdoor adventures, team sports, and high-energy games, all of which promote both physical and mental well-being.
● Building Social Skills and Confidence: Making new friends and learning to work as a team are essential parts of camp life Through collaborative activities, campers gain leadership skills, boost their self-esteem, and develop lifelong friendships. We also emphasize mentorship, teaching
kids how to create and foster healthy friendships an essential factor in reducing social anxiety
● Resilience and Emotional Strength: Camp is all about stepping outside of comfort zones and taking on new challenges Whether it’s climbing a rock wall or learning a new skill, overcoming obstacles helps children build grit the ability to persevere through life’s ups and downs
TacklingtheChallengesofaDigitalWorld
One of the biggest concerns for parents today is the impact of screen time and social media on their children’s mental health Studies have linked excessive digital exposure to increased anxiety, depression, and even changes in behavior. At Kidventure, we create a space where kids can unplug, engage in meaningful real-world interactions, and practice mindfulness helping to counteract the negative effects of too much screen time
As parents, we all want the best for our children. We want them to be happy, confident, and equipped to handle life’s challenges. At Kidventure, we provide an environment where kids can thrive emotionally, socially, and physically Investing in experiences like summer camp isn’t just about filling time during the summer it’s about giving our children the foundation for a happier, healthier future
Now, more than ever, our kids need spaces where they can connect, grow, and discover their true potential That’s the heart of Kidventure, and that’s why we do what we do We invite you to join us in making this summer an experience that will shape your child’s future for the better

The first thing that comes to a teen’s mind when you ask them what the month of May means to them is most likely the fact that school is almost finished for the year and summer has begun! May is also the month we celebrate Mother’s Day!
We don’t need much reminding of this special day due to the overload of flower commercials and Dad asking us for help in making plans I don’t know about you but in general Mother’s Day celebrations mostly consist of flowers, candy, a nice lunch or dinner and the ever famous Hallmark card that helps us all put into words exactly how we feel I’ve always thought it was kind of strange that one day is picked for the year to celebrate Moms
What would be even more strange is if Moms picked one day to take care of their children…or do laundry and prepare dinner!
Do teens appreciate their moms? I would say most really do But what, exactly, are we appreciating?
We appreciate the fact that our necessities are met. Mom’s preparing dinner, doing the family’s laundry, cleaning the house and, often times, giving Dad that extra nudge when we really want something special
In preparing for this article, I spent a day really observing everything my mom does for our family It was an eye-opening experience as I made the time to really take notice of the extra care she takes for my dad and me. I was doing some homework the other night, and she made sure I had something to snack on. And the lemonade I was drinking miraculously was filled Had I not have been really paying attention, I would have totally missed that gesture of love
Women are nurturers by nature, and some are so very gifted at being a mom that we don’t even stop to appreciate all the little things they do to help make our lives as teenagers so much easier
The love of a mom goes far beyond the “duties” itemized by society When we were little, Mom was the first one to make our skinned knees all better. As we grow older and mature in our early teens, many of us are embarrassed for anyone to even know we have a mom!
Personally, I think this is ridiculous I feel very proud to have my mom around and feel very lucky that Mom takes the extra time to teach and instill in me positive morals and values We are a product of our surroundings, and I feel that teens tend to block their moms out of their lives for silly reasons
Trust me: If staying in the popular group means never being seen with your mom, I can assure you that you are missing out on some valuable and memorable times Those popular kids won’t be there when you need help in college or your car breaks down, or you lose the guy or girl of your dreams and just want someone who cares.
The bottom line is no one really cares and understands us like a mom does
Your mom knows you better than anyone, even that best friend forever that will probably take off in a different direction after high school
Moms are a lot like superheroes. They are always there to save the day, but take great care in watching over us…even when we think we don’t need it and mostly when we act like we don’t want it.
Being a teen comes with many privileges, and we feel as though we are truly grown up, but in reality we are just beginning to learn the big lessons in life I can’t think of anyone better to be there to help catch me when I fall than my Mom
Have a wonderful celebration with your mom this year I challenge you all to take the time to notice the little things, let her know you care, and most of all keep her in your life as you share the triumphs and heartbreaks you encounter. And know that along the way she will be proud of you no matter what. After all, she worked all her life to see you grow up and has help guide you, giving you the tools to make your dreams come true.
As for what to get your mom for Mother’s Day, do you know which gift will she love the most? I guarantee she will love the little moments more than anything you can buy in a store. So go create some of those moments
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! I love you so very much

What can you do if your kids pine for pets but adoption is not an option in your home? Maybe the cost of pet ownership is too high or perhaps someone in the house has a severe allergy. Maybe the family travels often or the sting of losing a furry family member has yet to wear off.
Whether you are choosing to go without a pet or simply putting ownership off for now, don't let your kids miss out on making connections with the animal kingdom. Go ahead and speak openly with your family about the reasons why you choose not to have a pet at this time. But don't make the mistake of thinking children who are passionate about animals will stop longing simply because they can't have them in the house.
If kids would prefer pet ownership, encourage kids to talk about any feelings of disappointment and frustration. Then soften the blow by making the most of the animalrelated resources below. Just because you don't have a real-live pet at home does not mean you can't fill your home with animal appreciation. Animals have much to teach us about humanity, love, and connection. By taking a multi-sensory approach, your kids won't feel like they are missing out.
If your condition is the reason pets are not welcome, never fear. Even though your children may experience disappointment when they discover pets are not an option. Ultimately, they are sure to appreciate your efforts to incorporate animal appreciation for the whole family.
