21 Ways For Kids To Avoid The Summer Slide: Boredom Busters For All Ages
By Christina Katz
You have probably heard about the summer slide-the way kids can lose a lot of the skills, knowledge and motivation they learned during the school year over the lazy, hazy days of summer. And though I am sure you don't need your child to become the next Einstein or Madame Curie, you probably want to make sure your child will retain all that was learned last year in order to be prepared for the academic year to come.
And sure, a little strategic screen time here and there can be educational when we intend it that way, but the key to keeping summer fun and instructive is to mix up informative play and educational screen time. This is also a great way to stave off the inevitable choruses of "I'm bored" or "We're bored."
This summer, set tone that a little learning is an important part of each day, so kids still enjoy the relaxation of summer while keeping up the habit of learning
Here is a roundup of 21 ways to keep your kids' minds active all summer long, so your kids will have a happier summer and you won't worry about the transition back to school come fall:
1.Askforinsight. Check with your child's teacher before school gets out to see what kinds of educational goals she recommends for your child Don't compare your children's academic performance to siblings or friends. Everyone learns and grows differently Aim to support your child wherever he or she stands academically right now to maximize enjoyment of learning
2.Signupforyourlibrarysummerreadingprogram.Set a minimum reading time each day of thirty - sixty minutes Or break reading time into two thirty-minute chunks - one for a parent-approved book and the other for whatever your child chooses to read. The library offers lots of variety, and summer is a great time to check out age-appropriate comic books and graphic novels, as well as cookbooks and biographies
3.Visitmuseumsinyourarea. Find out in advance when the free days are to visit local museums and learning centers Opt for guided or non-guided tour, as your family prefers. Be sure to check out the gift shop on your way out for inspired games and toys.
4.Plantagardentogether. Use illustrated gardening books by Sharon Lovejoy to find projects that suit the personalities of your family and kids If your family loves pizza, plant a pizza garden. If fresh salsa is your thing, plant a salsa garden. Think about what your family likes to eat and plant accordingly See sidebar for guidebooks bursting with gardening inspiration.
5.Shoplikeateacher. Visit your local teacher supply store and stock up on workbooks and educational games Other things you will find that might motivate summer loungers include timers for breaking the day up into learning chunks, craft supplies for every age, and educational games, videos and music.
6.Playstore. Pull out a portion of the food in your cabinets and pantry out onto the countertops Let kids use real money, price items, break out the calculators, and do the math Make playing store an all-day affair or a weekly occurrence, if your kids enjoy it Make the game as simple or complex as suits your children's ages.
7.Visitlocalnaturecenters,Audubonsocieties,and nearbygardens. Make a list at the beginning of summer and plan to hit all the regional natural destinations all before the first day of school. Then plan a weekly outing and bring along a picnic To review what you saw and learned on the way home, play "I Spied", instead of "I Spy."
8.Researchafuturevacation.Let each child pick their own destination and figure out what it would cost for the family to spend one week there including airfare, transportation, meals, hotels, and everything else Have them present their proposed vacations to the whole family by showing the math writ large on posterboard Who knows, they just might talk you into a trip you hadn't thought of yourself
9.Letthemplanameal. The kids can become chefs for the day, including the jobs of finding the recipes, making the grocery list, cutting the coupons, doing the shopping, comparing brands, and cooking up a storm Then be a good sport and enjoy whatever they serve. Very young children can do the same, only with make-pretend food
10.Haveawordoftheday. Put the word in large letters at the top of a page with the definition just below Hang the word on the fridge and make a game out of using it in sentences all day long
11.Battlebugsorweedsasresearchprojects. What a great way to practice troubleshooting and potentially solve your most nagging nuisances Challenge older kids to solve your ecological challenges by researching and experimenting with natural solutions they track down on the Internet Keep a log of the results Give rewards for problems solved.
12.Measureandmix. Put the kids in charge of desserts for the summer Make sure they create some healthy choices like fruit pops or sorbet as well as delicious baked goodies like pies, cakes, and cookies If they get carried away, let them have a neighborhood bake sale
13.Gomulti-mediawithbooksyoureadtogether.Take turns reading out loud or check out audio books from your local library to listen to before dinner or before bed Once you finish the book as a family, watch the movie together. Compare and contrast the books and the films See sidebar for suggested books that have been made into movies
14.Keepa"HowISpentMySummerScrapbook."Choose a blank-page, over-sized book with ample pages for writing, collaging, collecting, and embellishing Set aside time to work on "summer books" for a half hour every day at whatever time of day works best Let kids decide whether or not to keep it private or share the results with the family.
15.SignupforBrainPop. This educational website has over 1,000 short animated movies for kids ages sixseventeen, making it the perfect substitute teacher for your kids over the summer Best of all, they can pursue topics that interest them Check with your child's school library to see if they have free access to BrainPopJr for KThird Grade Otherwise a subscription is money well spent on entertaining enrichment.
16.Tackleabigcreativeproject. Choose one that takes planning, creativity, and involving others like putting on a puppet show, writing a play, or making a movie Let your child approach the project in his or her own way, and only offer to help if you are needed. Invest a little money in your child's creativity and their imaginations will be buoyed by your patronage.
17.Visitfriendsandfamilyaroundtheworld. Start with a list of friends and family you know all over the globe Then once a week, take an hour to really explore that destination via Google Earth and by researching online information Expand your geographic horizons further by video-calling your friends or family and informally interviewing them about the area where they live. Post a map on the wall and stick a tack in each location you visit virtually
18.Thinkbeyondthelemonadestand. Terrific lessons about business, sales, and marketing will be learned when you create your child's version of the lemonade stand Why not sell old toys, baked goods, or artwork as a lesson in entrepreneurism? You never know You might spark a future interest in business
19.Committoacause. If you child loves animals, see if you can spend some time volunteering at a local animal shelter. If she's a regular fashionista, why not throw a summer trashion show to raise money for a local charity? Even a trip to your local food bank or letting your kids come with you while you give blood is a life lesson that keeps on giving
20.Shareyourchildhoodfavorites. Did you love to make friendship bracelets or collect comic books? Did your husband learn to play guitar or practice scouting skills in the backyard? Summer is the perfect time to share your favorite hobbies and summer pastimes with your kids. Why not strike up a conversation about it at dinner tonight to get the memories rolling?
21.Admireintelligence.Find healthy and smart virtual role models for your tween or teen to study over the summer. For example, if your young lady loves entropy and dissecting frogs, she might enjoy trying some home experiments created by Bill Nye, The Science Guy

Tips for Grads Getting a Job Tips for Grads Getting a Job
BY KARLA FRIEDE
1.Buildyourbrand
For the first 10 years of your career, think of yourself as a product that you are developing and marketing. Think about building your brand and creating a strong product Early in your career, your personal brand is going to be about the brands you have on your resume. Seek experience in companies that have well-recognized brands, because some of their luster will rub off on you. If you can go to work for a bigger brand and take a lesser role, do it If you can’t, make sure that you move around to get different experiences inside the company
Your knowledge base is also part of your brand, so think of yourself as being in knowledge-acquisition mode for at least the first ten years, making your product yourself more valuable When I worked for Mentor Graphics, a large tech company, I started in their Corporate Finance Group doing financial analysis When I could, I moved to pricing analysis, and eventually had responsibility for pricing and packaging of the company products Pricing was part of corporate marketing, so this allowed me to join the marketing team and then make a move into division marketing I transitioned into as many different roles as I could, which gave me the opportunity to learn and to figure out what I wanted to do
2.Don’tbeafraidtochangecourse
Coming out of college, young people put so much pressure on themselves to find a perfect job, but it’s not an irreversible decision You don’t have to find the perfect job out of the gate because you’ll have multiple shots at it If you find yourself in a job and it’s not what you thought it was, or if you don’t like working in the field you majored in, do something else. When I graduated, I started my career at KPMG I worked at fitting in for about year before I realized accounting wasn’t for me. Accounting has changed a lot since then, but at the time it was mainly scorekeeping measuring and reporting what had already happened in a business This position helped me understand I wanted to be involved in making decisions that drove a business, so I decided to make a change. I applied to MBA programs A year later, I was on my way to Harvard Business School. Your career is going to be a very long road. If you find you’re going the wrong direction, it’s easier to make a change early than it is to change later
3.Seekfeedback
I’ve watched young women propel their careers forward very quickly by consistently and proactively asking for feedback This is something I wish I’d done more. For every significant task you’re assigned and every project you’re on, ask the people you worked with for feedback on what you could have done better. Be prepared to take some knocks but keep it in perspective Give yourself a break, because you’re still learning. Also, realize being able to give feedback constructively is a skill few have mastered, so what you get may be not always be delivered in the most diplomatic way. But, if you have the courage to consistently seek feedback, and more importantly learn from it, it will dramatically increase the trajectory of your career
4.Meetnewpeople
Make it a point to meet somebody new every week. Ask people out to coffee or lunch. This isn’t something that comes naturally to many of us, but there’s no better way to build your interpersonal skills and expand your network You’ll be surprised by how much more confident and outgoing you’ll become just by doing this Improving your networking skills now will pay off in the future since much of your success depends on your ability to work with others and find ways to put them at ease
5.Findwomenmentors
While there are still not anywhere near enough women in leadership roles, there are more than there used to be Many women are willing to help others around them learn and avoid the mistakes they’ve made, so don’t be afraid to ask Everyone I know who has been asked to be a mentor has welcomed the opportunity
Who should you ask? Perhaps you have a family member who is accomplished in her career. Maybe you had an internship in college and connected with someone or a professor you admired Maybe your parents know someone who’d be willing to step up
6.Findaculturalfit
It’s clear that while women have made great strides in business since I started out, gender bias in the workplace is far from dead. It’s rare today for a company’s culture to be overtly hostile to women, but a more subtly biased culture can emerge over time, in random comments or viewpoints, or ways people are treated differently
If you see this happening, think about moving on Most cultures are deeply ingrained, and not going to change in the short term. You don’t have to silently struggle and keep working there life is just too short to put up with bias.
Find a company where you’re comfortable. There are plenty of good ones out there Meet with the HR person at your current company on the way out Be very clear about why you are leaving and let them know what you experienced. If enough women communicate their experience and leave because of the culture, it may get the company’s attention
Mental Illness is Biologically
Based: Mental Illness is Biologically Based: Let’s End the Stigma Let’s End the Stigma
Nearly one in five American adults experience mental illness in any given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health–and one in 25 experience a serious mental illness (SMI) Those with an SMI consist primarily of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and severe major depression
Unfortunately, people with mental illness experience a high degree of stigma. They often experience discrimination in the workplace and their personal lives from those who see someone with a mental illness as odd or flawed This often results from a misunderstanding of mental illness and not recognizing that it's a medical condition
In recent decades, the stigma surrounding mental illness has improved slightly. Yet it persists Part of the problem lies in that it falls under the field of psychology, the study of human 'behavior' Much of society doesn't understand mental illness often has biological and genetic roots So people often see mental illness as indicative of personality flaws or learned behavior and think someone with mental illness should be able to just 'snap out of it.'
Many experts and advocates recognize this problem and have called for biologically-based brain diseases to be reclassified into more appropriate fields of medicine such as neurology This move would go a long way toward reducing stigma. Reclassification would also help to ensure those with brain illnesses can get insurance coverage and adequate treatment
In the meantime, what can be done to reduce stigma? Educating society on what mental illness is and is not, is vital When people with a mental illness brave coming out and telling their personal stories, more people hear the message Celebrities sharing their own personal experience has been particularly helpful. The public is often more receptive when admired stars share their trials and tribulations.
The following illnesses qualify as serious mental illness You'll also discover some celebrities who've been diagnosed with each.
Majordepressivedisorder(MDD). In any given year, 67% of the population will experience MDD A smaller percentage suffers from severe MDD Unlike the occasional sadness or blues many people experience, MDD is a persistently low mood that interrupts daily living Symptoms include changes in appetite and sleep, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, ruminations about death, suicide attempts, and in severe cases, psychosis
The exact cause of MDD is unknown What is known, though, is that a variety of factors can contribute to the disorder These include biological changes in the brain, genetics, hormones, and brain chemistry. Some people with MDD might experience a single bout Yet for others, it's chronic. Fortunately, antidepressants are effective for most people. Though some are treatment-resistant leading to long-term disability
Ashley Judd, Owen Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heath Ledger, and Winona Ryder are among the many celebrities who've battled major depressive disorder.
Bipolardisorder(BD). This disorder, affecting 2.6% of the population, is marked by emotional extremes ranging from depressive symptoms, as described above, to mania or hypomania. During manic episodes, sufferers experience a decreased need for sleep, extremely elevated mood, and increased energy or agitation They're also easily distracted, may have racing thoughts, and take foolish risks. For some people with BD, delusions, and hallucinations accompany mania Though the exact cause of bipolar is unknown, it's biological and often genetic.
Bipolar is highly treatable, though some people experience treatment resistance Also, during manic episodes, people with BD are typically unable to recognize their illness Left untreated, it can be a very debilitating disease.
Some celebrities known to have bipolar disorder are Demi Lovato, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Carrie Fisher, and Sinead O'Connor
Schizophreniaandschizoaffectivedisorder. These two diseases affect 12% and 3% of the population, respectively Schizophrenia is the most serious mental illness of all It's marked by symptoms of psychosis, which are paranoia, delusions, and hallucinations Disorganized thinking, speech, or motor movement is also present. What fewer people are familiar with is what's known as 'negative symptoms' These prevent a person with schizophrenia from functioning. Those with schizophrenia often have poor hygiene, withdraw socially, and have a symptom known as avolition, which is a decrease in motivation
Despite new and improved medications for this disease, only one-third of sufferers can lead a relatively functional life. Another one-third is treatment-resistant, with the final third receiving a degree of relief As a result, two-thirds of those with schizophrenia are dependent, or often homeless or housed in America's jails and prisons–known as today's new mental health institutions.
Schizoaffective disorder is marked by features of both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. While the cause of these two disorders is unknown, researchers believe genetics, biology, and environmental factors combined ultimately contribute to these brain diseases.
Finding celebrities with these two diseases is rare because schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder typically strike during the late teens to the early 20s resulting in moderate to severe disability However, John Nash, Lionel Aldridge, Calen Pick (nephew of Glenn Close), and Eduard Einstein (son of Albert Einstein), all suffer, or suffered, from schizophrenia
Obsessivecompulsivedisorder(OCD).This perplexing disorder, which affects 1% of the population, is marked by obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are most commonly seen in the form of fear of contamination or harm to self or others, excessive concern with order or bodily symptoms, or intrusive religious thoughts In turn, those afflicted with OCD act out compulsions to alleviate their fears or thoughts This is done through repeated acts of checking, organizing, washing, or senseless acts of tapping, counting, or repeating words
Medication combined with therapy helps treat OCD, though the prognosis is better for those with milder symptoms Many people with this disorder experience severe debilitation. The cause of OCD is understood to be a combination of genetics, biology, and environmental factorsDavid Beckham, Marc Summers, Howie Mandel, and Fiona Apple are known to suffer from OCD
Panicdisorder. One in ten adults experiences a panic attack every year Panic disorder, however, affects only one in 33 people. With this disorder, people experience sudden and repeated bouts of extreme fear that lasts at least several minutes, if not longer The symptoms include shortness of breath, racing heart, trembling, weakness, dizziness, chest pain, tingling or numbing of hands, stomach pain, and nausea. Sufferers may also experience fear of dying, going crazy, being out of control, or impending doom Panic disorder often results in the avoidance of things or places where attacks have previously taken place
Panic disorder is highly treatable with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. It's believed to be biological and genetic in nature
It's unclear whether the following celebrities have been diagnosed with panic disorder. Still, they're known for experiencing panic attacks: Johnny Depp, Princess Diana, John Mayer, and Emma Stone.
Anorexiaorbulimiadisorder. These two eating disorders combined affect one in 40 Americans, mostly women, and share many of the same symptoms These include the absence of periods, slow heart rate, swelling, dizziness, constipation, hypotension, hair loss, and more
Treatment consists of medical care, nutritional counseling, psychotherapy, and medication Prognosis varies by the particular illness, among other factors. Still, a significant percentage do not reach full recovery, sometimes resulting in death
It's believed genetics combined with psychological and sociological factors contribute to eating disorders Sadie Robertson, Gabourey Sidibe, Zayn Malik, and Beverly Johnson have all struggled with eating disorders
Autismspectrumdisorders. These disorders affect one in 68 children Symptoms include repetitive or unusual behaviors, intense interest in particular topics, making little eye contact, facial expressions and gestures that don't match what's said, an unusual tone of voice, and difficulty understanding other points of view. Other social, language, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional deficits are present as well
Treatment for this developmental disorder includes behavior interventions and medication. Prognosis is dependent, in part, on early diagnosis and intervention
Though the cause of autism spectrum disorders is unknown, genetics and environmental factor appear to contribute to its development Celebrities diagnosed with these disorders include Dan Aykroyd, Courtney Love, Daryl Hannah, and Paddy Considine
Otherdisorders. Numerous other mental disorders afflict millions of Americans as well Other depressive disorders, dissociative identity disorder, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and attention deficit disorder are but a few Each has the potential to be disabling, and those who suffer from these disorders sometimes experience stigma as well
Theendofstigma
As more people who suffer from mental illness open up, hopefully, we can reduce the pervasive stigma that surrounds mental illness. Particularly crucial to ending stigma, however, is ensuring those with the most severe brain diseases (SMI) receive appropriate and adequate treatment.
Individuals with mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence than to commit violence That said, the subset with SMI that's untreated does have higher violence rates resulting from psychosis By ensuring they receive humane medical treatment to manage their brain disease (and improve their quality of life), the violence that contributes to stigma will be diminished.
Just like any other organ of the body, our brains are prone to medical conditions. The brain is the most complex organ of our bodies. So it only stands to reason it's subject to a variety of biological conditions
As researchers come to understand our brains better, more sophisticated diagnostic tools will be developed for a more definitive diagnosis. In the meantime, we should treat those with mental illness with the same dignity, respect, and empathy we treat someone with a physical disability, heart condition, stroke, or Alzheimer's disease.
