Happily Ever After:
TUTS looks to blend the modern and the classic with Cinderella written by Holly Beretto | photos by Melissa Taylor
I
Audiences will find something familiar and something new in the beloved story of a girl who years for more.
t’s a story as familiar as your own reflection, complete with fairy godmothers, mean stepmothers, a pumpkin coach and – of course – the famous glass slipper. Cinderella has captivated generations of children and adults, with multiple iterations since it’s reported first appearance in Italy in 1634. It is, quite possibly, the most famous of fairy tales. When it hits the TUTS stage at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts next month, however, it will bring with it an energy that looks to blend the story’s classic elements with modern sensibilities. Originally written for television with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the duo behind such Broadway musical favorites as The Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and South Pacific, the musical first premiered on CBS in 1957 with Julie Andrews in the title role. TUTS’ version is inspired by the updated teleplay starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, broadcast on ABC in 1997. Eboni Bell Darcy is the director, and she notes that those
expecting to see a Cinderella where the main character waits around for her prince to rescue her could be surprised. “In this version, the godmother shows up and she tells Cinderella that she has to stop wishing and actually take action in her life and do something about it,” says Darcy. “And because Cinderella takes that action, because she says, ‘You know what? My stepmother and my stepsisters ripped up my mother's dress and I'm sad about it, but I'm going to go in here and I'm going to fix it and I'm going to head off to the ball,’ the godmother grants her magic and bestows her with all the things she needs to go to the ball.” Darcy is betting that message about taking action will resonate with audiences who like to see a little empowerment with their romance and magic. And there is plenty of magic. “It has a magical element that lets people get lost in the illusion,” she says. “There are different technical elements and projections to
enhance the magic and really take them on a ride.” The production incorporates the talents of local and national performers, including students who are part of TUTS’ River and Humphreys School of Musical Theatre programs. Darcy loves being able to work with such a large and diverse cast, and points out that for the young people in the show, it’s an amazing chance not only to be on stage but also to see up close the work it takes to be in professional theater “It's incredible that I have this opportunity to work with a cast of professionals and connect them with these young people who are hungry to learn and to be a part of the industry and to watch those groups work together and interact together and learn from one another,” she says. One of those young people is Makenzie Woolridge, an 18-year-old from the Cypress area, who was a student in the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre and is now part of TUTS’ pre-professional program. Houston audiences may have seen her in TUTS productions of Head Over Heels, Into the Woods and
Bring it On. She was a 2023 Tommy Tune winner for Cypress Ranch High School’s production of Into the Woods as well, a performance that sent her to the Jimmy Awards in New York City, the national awards ceremony that recognizes student excellence in musical theatre. She’s in the show’s ensemble and understudying the role of Cinderella. “Being an understudy isn’t an easy task, so the most challenging part of my role will be memorizing two character tracks,” she says. “But I always love a good challenge, so I’m excited. I feel like TUTS has helped me a lot with my transition from educational theatre to professional. I still have a lot to learn, I feel much more comfortable and confident in what I have to offer in professional artistic spaces.” Woolridge is joined on stage by Jake Hurst, who performed with The River, TUTS’ program to provide arts education and performance opportunities for students with disabilities and their siblings, and is now part of the Humphreys School Academy program. The 18-year-old high school senior

from Katy is in the Cinderella teen ensemble. “It’s so much fun!” He says about his experiences with The River and the Humphreys School, where he’s been part of such TUTS shows as Sponge Bob Squarepants: The Musical, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins. “My favorite part of teen ensemble is you get be involved more, in one way or another. In SpongeBob I was a sardine and I had many parts, meaning many more costume changes and time on stage. It was fun being on stage more often and interacting with other cast members.” As the date to opening night draws closer, Darcy says the excitement level among the cast and crew amps up. She knows they’re bringing a show that’s special to so many to the stage, and she’s looking forward to audiences enjoying the fruits of their efforts. “People are going to come to this show also and feel like they're seeing Houston on stage,” she says. “It's going to feel comfortable, it's going to feel familiar. And there’s a happy ending as well.”

You’ll explore the connections between human, animal, and environmental health, dive into case studies and personal experiences from epidemic fighters from around the globe, discover how outbreaks have affected the Greater Houston Area, and engage in games that challenge you to identify and contain an outbreak.

VETERAN VISION PROJECT Arizona State University student and photographer Devin Mitchell created the Veteran Vision Project to capture the diversity of veterans and their experiences. His powerful photos, which have received significant national acclaim, contrast veterans in uniform and in poses that reflect their life after military service.

YOUR BODY YOUR AIR Breathe in. Breathe out. Air pollutants are substances in the air that can have a negative effect on our health. Your Body, Your Air explores four common types of air pollutants and their sources in the Houston area, as well as the effect these pollutants have on our bodies and our communities. Together we can work towards healthier air, healthier bodies, and healthier communities.

SHARKS! THE MEG, THE MONSTERS, & THE MYTHS Houston Museum of Natural Science
We’re gonna need a bigger exhibit hall. Debuting on a floor all to itself is Sharks! The Meg, The Monsters & The Myths. We’re making your dreams come true and bringing you up close and personal with live sharks for a hands-on experience that will be – dare we say – jawsome. You’ll get a chance to touch a shark and discover what makes these creatures unique – from bait balls to bioluminescence. Further immerse yourself in the world of sharks as every order of shark known to mankind is represented within the exhibition, including a life-size model of the ancient behemoth, the Megalodon. And don’t forget to pick up a few Megalodon teeth of your own in the island shop.

BEARING WITNESS: A COMMUNITY REMEMBERS The Gallery is personalized with testimony of Holocaust Survivors who later settled in the Houston area. These incredible individuals lived through a genocidal war that inflicted mass death on unprecedented numbers of innocent civilians. The Gallery features artifacts donated by the Holocaust Survivors, their descendants, liberators, and other collectors.

RHONA AND BRUCE CARESS GALLERY - AND STILL I WRITE: YOUNG DIARISTS ON WAR AND GENOCIDE In Nazi Europe, Jewish teenagers wrote in worn notebooks. Far away in America, young people in Japanese internment camps did the same. Decades later, it was children in war-time Sarajevo. More recently, in Iraq and Syria, young writers typed their accounts instead, transmitting messages secretly or posting anonymously on social media. Times change, but the impulse to mark our place in the world endures.

HANNE DARBOVEN— WRITING TIME Writing Time explores the intertwining of writing and drawing that formed the core of the artist’s practice for over forty years. Hanne Darboven (1941–2009), a German conceptual artist, is best
known for her immersive installations of individually framed sheets filled with text formulations and collaged images. At the heart of her practice is the question of how to picture the unfolding of history, the passing of time, and one’s experience within both.

WALL DRAWING SERIES: MARC BAUER Swiss artist Marc Bauer (b. 1975) has been commissioned to create the fifth installment of the ephemeral wall drawing series at the Menil Drawing Institute. Bauer’s art practice is based in his careful examination of how images circulate in print and online media platforms. Bauer uses drawing to reconfigure found images—from sources ranging from personal family albums to cable news streams— with the goal of ultimately shaping a prismatic view of history, culture, and politics. He likens this process to a kind of witnessing, a deliberate and deeply personal way of seeing and understanding the world.

JORDAN STRAFER: TRILOGY Both perversely pleasurable and pleasurably perverse, Jordan Strafer’s videos are absurd, fantastical, humorous, and, at times, violent meditations on power and the uniquely human capacity to inflict violence, be it physical, psychological, or both. The artist’s first solo museum exhibition, Jordan Strafer: Trilogy presents Strafer’s recent trilogy of videos PEP (Process Entanglement Procedure) (2019), SOS (2021), and PEAK HEAVEN LOVE FOREVER (2022), alongside a selection of related works on paper by the artist.

MAX ADRIAN: RIPSTOP Max Adrian: RIPSTOP is a solo exhibition of patchwork textiles and inflatable sculptures by the Ohio-based fiber artist. Adrian’s volumetric, pneumatic work transports viewers into a realm of artifice, desire, and worldbuilding. Drawing from rich legacies of queer fiber art and theory, including the AIDS memorial quilt and José Esteban Muñoz’s foundational text, Cruising Utopia, the exhibition features monumentally scaled works that physically respond to the presence of viewers by filling with air. “The sculptures’ constant state of performing, or becoming, reflects Adrian’s interests in queerness as an inherently utopian and future-oriented mode of being,” says Sarah Darro, Curator and Exhibitions Director at HCCC.

TREE OF LIFE Tree of Life showcases sculptural objects made from the African blackwood tree, also known as mpingo or Dalbergia melanoxylon. Native to Tanzania and the territory surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro, this tree has a naturally dark, nearly black, colored core and other unique properties that make it a preferred choice of material for ornamental turning, carving, and use in woodwind instruments. This exhibition features figural sculptures carved in the Makonde tradition by Tanzania-based artists, Joseph Singombe and Pius Mtembe; ornamental turning by the late Texas-based artist James Harris; and woodwind instruments that explore the different methods artists are using when approaching this material.
