MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER

M y

F a m i l y

Recently, I was told by staff that the magazine needs more "Me". As the publisher, I feel like every issue has tons of 'me' in it, but they reminded me, that isn't what the readers see. They need to see 'me'. So since this issue is all about family, I decided to pull some fave pics from November over the years. WhatI discovered as I went through about 1000 pics is that most of my Novembers have been spent traveling. Mind you, that is fine by me. I LOVE to travel! But, one constant remained through all my travels.....I was either with or going to see family. One of my greatest accomplishments thus far in life, in my opinion, is the family that I have built. I say built because it has come to me in a variety of ways. Through marriage, adoption, friendship and career. The ones not built by blood but by choice mean the world to me, because we chose and choose to make the effort to be involved and support each other. That, to me, speaks volumes. I love and would do anything for those close to me. In this issue, we focus on what you are thankful for.Growing a Thankful Family, How to Balance Giving & Receiving (in this world of excess), 7 Reasons Why You Should Be Thankful for your Teenager! All great stuff toconsider as you gather round the table this year. We also are so thankful for our community. We shout out to the Top Schools in Houston, Local stores, to keep Houston dollars in Houston and a fun-filled calendar of things to do around town. Let's celebrate the season! Whatever you do and wherever you are, I hope you are surrounded by friends and family. I am truly blessed and am thankful for you all. a

Each year as the holiday season rolls around, we’re encouraged to count our blessings. This year we know that many are struggling financially. Perhaps you know families who have lost jobs and are wondering how they’ll pay their bills. You might know families devastated by flooding, tornadoes or other natural disasters that have swept our nation in past months. Perhaps your own family has special needs right now.

10 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE November 2021

Here’s a question for you. Is it possible to be thankful in difficult times? The answer is yes, it is. In fact, it’s an excellent thing to be thankful even when in need and to once again remind ourselves of the truly important things in life. If you’ve ever traveled to a third world country you’ll know that we, in America, are bountifully blessed with material possessions far beyond our daily needs. So while we may never drive a Mercedes or own that picture-perfect home, we still have many reasons to be thankful. Even if we’ve suffered financial setbacks we have many reasons to be thankful. When we count our blessings we move beyond mere things of the world and on to what really matters. If you were to make a mental list of the most important blessings in your life, I’d be willing to bet that most of them are people and your relationships with them. What was life like when you were a child? Did you have enough? Did you go without? What lessons did you learn from parents and grandparents about important life values? We all have stories to tell our children about the good old days and we really should pass them on to our children. Those good old days for me were the mid-1940’s through the 1960’s. Both my parents worked from the time I was nine years old and I was expected to pitch in with cooking and cleaning the house. We only ate in restaurants or stayed in motels while on our two-week summer vacation which was a long road trip to North Dakota. There we visited farm relatives who had it even harder than we did! We always had plenty to eat, though the food was plain meat and potatoes. We owned five or six sets of clothing plus play clothes which we changed into after school each day. We received a ten cent weekly allowance that later went up twenty-five cents. Not much, but you have to remember that a quarter in those dayscould buy six candy bars. We had everything we needed and more and we never felt shortchanged, but we had a very simple life compared to most American children today.

It’s true that children tend to roll their eyes when grown-ups get carried away with the stories of the olden days. Especially if they are the preface to reasons they can’t have something they want. But it’s true---things are different now. Most of us have far more than we had as children. We live in better houses, own more possessions, expect more entertainment and in general tend to think we deserve a very comfortable day to day life. Our children take their cues from us and it’s a challenge to teach them to be satisfied with a simple lifestyle when all around they see a dizzying array of things to be bought and owned. How can we instill the values of a healthy work ethic, home-grown fun and a thankful heart into our children’s lives? I believe the answer lies in basic truths that need to be instilled in children from the time they can understand words. Our happiness is not found in things, but in relationships. Our wealth is not measured in material possessions, although many of them are fine things to have, but true wealth is found in family and friends. While it is pleasant to receive, true joy is found in service to others. As my own children were growing up we had a saying that covered our philosophy of family life. That saying was, “We’re rich in love.” Our children would ask if we were rich or poor. We were middle class, but that doesn’t mean much to a child. The children knew that we gave a tithe to our church and we gave special offerings and gifts at other times. They knew there were “poor people” in the world and that we had enough to bless others in times of need. So when they asked if we were rich or poor, we always answered, “We’re rich in love” and gave out big hugs. The message they received was the truth---we had all we needed and enough left over to be generous. We were content. I recently came across the story of the origin of an old folk song written by Joe “Red” Hayes and Jack Rhodes called A Satisfied Mind. The story goes that Joe Hayes got the idea for his lyrics from his father in law who asked him a question. He asked, “Who is the richest man in the world?” Joe mentioned some names, the Rockefellers, the Carnegies, the Fords. “No, you’re wrong, Joe,” said the father in law. “The richest man in the world is the one with a satisfied mind.” And thus the familiar folk song sung by many country and folk artists was born.

11 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE November 2021

One verse of that song goes like this: How many times have you heard someone say If I had his money I could do things my way. Little they know that it’s so hard to find One rich man in ten with a satisfied mind. A satisfied mind; how is a family to instill that as a value in today’s consumer-driven world? What is a family to do in the midst of a society that says we need more and better and larger of everything? The answer is, we intentionally teach otherwise. We plant the seeds of the attitudes we want to grow in our children and we tend those seeds all throughout the time our children grow up into the kind of adults we want them to become.

Plant Plant the value of people over possessions. Teach it, model it, talk about it. Take every opportunity to show that family ties, respect and love for both family members and friends are to be highly prized and protected.

Prune It isn’t easy to say no to our own desires or those of our children when they want something very badly. But there will be times when it is prudent to do so. Either the issue will be that the family can’t afford a good thing or chooses to decline to satisfy a desire for something counterproductive to the efforts being made to live simply.

Let the goals of the family reflect on ways to live in harmony with others rather than striving to gather more and more possessions.

Pruning always hurts a little bit, but if done wisely and carefully it produces even healthier plants.

Answer questions that arise about the choices your family makes concerning the things you buy, how much you save, the places you visit, the cars you drive and more.

Reap the harvest

Water As everyday life unfolds there will be many teaching opportunities—times when you can water the seeds you’ve planted to teach a simple lifestyle. Children can be taught the value of money and can learn to earn money for special toys or activities. The family can make choices to help others in need or stand up for principles held dear. Practical projects that put a high value on giving to others in need will be a lifegiving drink to the seedlings of generosity and kindness you’ve planted.

If this all sounds as easy as pie, you know that it isn’t. The pressures of our world are very real and there will be times when some compromise is the only way to get through the stresses of daily life. But the battle will be won

how to balance receiving with giving By Sandi Schwartz

One of the key challenges of holiday time is that our children get so used to receiving oodles of gifts that they expect they will always receive more and more. But have you noticed how quickly they lose interest with many of the toys they receive during the holidays? Showering our children with gifts every year can end up being detrimental if they become numb to the excitement of gifts, and if they only focus on the receiving side of the holidays. There are several ways that we can instill some balance so that our children learn to appreciate what they receive while also giving to others.

Express Gratitude Gratitude is one of the most important ways for us to get a happiness boost, providing us with so many wonderful psychological, physical, and interpersonal benefits. It improves our health, reduces stress, and helps us focus on the positive aspects of life. Teaching our kids how to step back and be thankful for what they have will keep them grounded and help them realize just how lucky they are to be receiving toys and other gifts at holiday time.

It encourages our kids to acknowledge the positive moments in their day, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Consider giving them their own gratitude journal this holiday season so they have the perfect place to record what they are thankful for, including their holiday gifts and other special moments throughout the year.

Less is More How many dolls does one little girl really need? If you dig through your children’s old toys, you may be taken aback by how many of each item they actually have: multiple puzzles, games, cars, trucks, plastic figures, and art supplies. It never ends. When they are showered with too many presents, it reduces the interest value of each toy very quickly. According to Kim John Payne in Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids, kids who are inundated with toys are so overwhelmed that they are unable to play by themselves and can even develop focus issues.

creative with gifts.

Choose Experiences Research over the last decade shows that experiences make us happier than possessions. Instead of always giving our kids gifts that they can hold in their hand, why not try a new experience that will provide them with a memory for a lifetime? It doesn’t have to be an expensive family vacation to Disney World; it can be a simple activity close by that you can enjoy together. Here are some ideas that your kids will love:

Enjoy nature by visiting a zoo or garden, going camping or hiking, spending a day at the beach, or trying out skiing or snowboarding. Show them the excitement of the city by visiting historical monuments, exploring museums, going out to a fancy restaurant, or attending a concert or sporting event. Expand their knowledge by signing them up for an art class, cooking class, music lesson, science event, or computer course.

15 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE November 2021

Learn to Give Back The holiday season can quickly turn into a shopping spree if we are not careful. But this is a particularly critical time of year to remember those who are not able to celebrate the holidays like we are with piles of gifts. December is the perfect time to clean out the playroom and practice some giving. Spend some time each year going through every nook and cranny to weed out the old toys before you bring in the new ones. Ask your children to collect piles of items to recycle, throw away, and donate. When the children choose from their own pile of toys, they gain a powerful hands-on experience to learn about that balance between giving and receiving. After you do this exercise a few times, your kids will automatically realize that no matter what new gifts they receive, they will choose some that they no longer play with to give to children who may not get any presents at all. This is a habit that everyone can easily add to their holiday traditions. You can also start to encourage your children to forgo a new gift or two to purchase items for those in need. Look for a holiday toy drive in your community to support and take your kids along with you to purchase the items and to deliver them to the charity.

by Katy Clark In a news story, the introductory paragraph tells the most important facts and answers the questions: who, what, where, when, why and how. In a featured story, the author may choose to open in any number of ways. The Five Ws, Five Ws and one H, or the Six Ws are questions whose answers are considered basic in information-gathering. They are often mentioned in journalism, research, and police investigations. They constitute a formula for getting the complete story on a subject. According to the principle of the Five Ws, a report can only be considered complete if it answers these questions starting with an interrogative word. Shelter Magazine A shelter magazine is a periodical publication with an editorial focus on interior design, architecture, home furnishings, and often gardening. The term is most often used in the U.S. magazine publishing trade. The earliest example of this meaning recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from a New York Times article published in 1946, in reference to Your Own Home, a "shelter magazine devoted to low-cost housing", reported to

Thanksgiving is a holiday that gets better as the kids get older. Sure, those turkey drawings traced around pudgy preschoolers’ hands were sweet. So was hearing my elementary schooler talk about the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Rock. And watching the little ones dine at the kids’ table at Grandma’s house was adorable, too. But Thanksgiving with my kids now that they are teenagers? It rocks. Here are 7 reasons why.

1. Teens sleep in Gone are the days of 5:30 am wakeups to watch Paw Patrol or play Candyland.

It was cute when they were little and gave thanks for cartoons and their goldfish, but now it’s amazing to hear them voice appreciation for relationships, health, faith, and the freedom of our country.

I can sleep in on Thanksgiving or, if I want to get up early to start cooking, I can get up when I’m ready—and not because someone is poking me in the eyeball.

5) I can nap again!

2. They care about the menu and like the food

While I indulge in some post-turkey shut-eye, I don’t have to worry that my kids are running into the street or licking the electrical outlets.

My kids want to know if the stuffing is sweet or savory and whether I’m serving that green bean casserole they liked so much last year. Not only are they interested in the Thanksgiving menu, but they’re interested in eating everything we’re having. This is in stark contrast to the Thanksgiving when my son was four and ate nothing but brown sugar. Now he eats everything on his plate, even items that touch each other!

3. Teens can help out and clean up Yup, the big kids can be trusted to put Grandma’s lace tablecloth on straight.

The only nap I have to worry about this year is my own!

Heck, they might even join me in a snooze on the other end of the couch.

6) Teens can stay up late and put themselves to bed Now that my kids are older, we can watch a movie after dinner and stay up as late as we want. It’s 10 pm? Bring it, Home Alone! I don’t have to worry about running a bath, washing hair, reading stories, or doing any of the other steps that made up their bedtime routines when they were little. Going to bed on Thanksgiving means saying, “Goodnight, I love you!” no matter who falls asleep first. (Okay, it’s me.)

They can handle the crystal and china with care, light the candles without setting the house on fire, and fold the napkins with sophistication.

7) It’s a low-key, stress- free holiday

My teens can also clear the table and do the dishes now.

It’s not Christmas, with its intense build-up and piles of gifts. And it’s not Halloween, with drama over who is too old, or too cool, to go trick-ortreating.

Sure, my kids were able to wash the dishes when they were younger, but they also fumbled my wedding china and dinged the gravy boat unless I supervised.

4) The conversation is more meaningful Celebrating Thanksgiving with teens means I can have meaningful conversations about gratitude.

Thanksgiving with teens is relaxed.

It’s Thanksgiving, which means I get to spend the day with the family I love, eating good food, and being grateful for it all. This year as we gather to give thanks, I’m grateful to be celebrating Thanksgiving with teenagers. It doesn’t get any better than that.

THIS YEAR’S OTHER VIRUS: THE FLU

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY WITH A FLU SHOT Influenza (“the flu”) is more than just a bad cold. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), each year the flu virus causes millions of illnesses, tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. Most of these can be prevented with one simple step: the flu shot. Memorial Hermann pediatrician Victoria Regan, MD, explains why the flu shot is so important for your whole family.

Influenza and COVID-19 are a dangerous combination.

This year is different from “normal” years because f lu season is arriving in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both viruses circulating at the same time may create a double impact on the community and may have significant health consequences, even for people who rarely get sick. This year’s flu vaccine could be the most important one you ever receive. “We had almost no flu season last year because so many people were vigilant with masking and social distancing because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr. Regan says. “But this year more people are out and about, and many are unmasked, so we will have many more exposures.”

“Pregnant women should definitely be vaccinated,” advises Dr. Regan. “If a pregnant woman gets the flu, it puts both her and the baby at risk of severe complications. Every year we see cases of pregnant women who die from the flu, and the baby is left behind without a mother.”

Is the flu shot safe?

Yes. The flu shot cannot cause the flu. However, you may experience side effects after receiving the vaccine. These side effects are usually mild and only last a few days. Some common side effects include: • Soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling at the injection site • Fever • Headache • Nausea • Muscle aches

Is the flu shot effective?

Can you get the flu vaccine at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes. The CDC says the C OV I D -19 v ac c i ne (including booster shots) can be given at the same Victoria Regan, MD Pediatrician time as other vaccines, including the flu vaccine. Both vaccines can keep you from getting sick and can keep you out of the hospital and prevent you from dying.

When is the best time to get the flu shot?

Now is the time for the whole family to get a flu shot. The height of flu season occurs between December and February. It takes about 2 weeks after receiving the vaccine for antibodies to develop and provide protection. It is best for children to be vaccinated as soon as possible after the vaccine becomes available. Children younger than 8 years old who are receiving the flu shot for the first time need two doses of the shot given 4 weeks apart. “The best timing is to be vaccinated by the end of October,” Dr. Regan says.

“It’s about 40 percent to 60 percent effective against contracting the flu virus,” Dr. Regan says. “But the main job of the vaccine is to prevent severe disease, hospitalization and death. That’s the point of being vaccinated — to stay out of the hospital and to stay alive.” Dr. Regan reminds families that if you get the f lu after being Who should get a flu shot? vaccinated, you will likely only have a light case “Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu of the virus. Located just 50 miles south of Houston, Galveston is bringing exciting events to its holiday lineup this year with the return of the POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride offering rides to the North Pole from the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Here are the top reasons Galveston Island is a holiday destination worth traveling to:

Rides to the North Pole All aboard! Galveston will welcome the POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride to its lineup of holiday attractions in 2021. Set to the soundtrack of the motion picture, The Polar Express will be theatrically recreated to immerse passengers in the sights, sounds and intrigue of this classic children’s tale while they are whisked away for a magical one-hour trip to meet Santa. The POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride in Galveston consists of six separate cars pulled by vintage locomotives from the Galveston Railroad Museum’s collection. The attraction will be open on weekends and select dates Nov. 18 through Dec. 23. Visit www.galvestonrrmuseum.org.

Holiday in the Gardens at Moody Gardens Moody Gardens Holiday in the Gardens takes place Nov. 20 through Jan. 2. Here, visitors can stroll through Festival of Lights, a mile-long trail of illuminated holiday displays, music, festive food and more. Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Brunches at the Grand Galvez On Friday, Nov. 26, the Grand Galvez is reviving its annual Galveston Holiday Lighting Celebration to bring in the holiday season with an appearance from Santa Claus, live performances by the Galveston Ballet and Galveston Symphony and the lighting of the city’s official 35foot Christmas tree. Another highlight at the 110-year-old Queen of the Gulf is the return of the award-winning Sunday Brunch – made even more special during the holiday season. The feast is a long-standing tradition for visitors and locals alike. As if plentiful stations of all-youcan-desire meat, seafood, breakfast, lunch, and dessert offerings aren’t enough, brunch comes with bubbles and mimosas. During December, you can visit Santa during brunch, and on Thanksgiving and Christmas, you can enjoy special holiday menus.

Victorian Charm With Galveston being home to one of the largest collections of Victorian architecture in the country, it’s not hard for the island to put you in a nostalgic state during the holidays – especially on the East End Historical District’s Victorian Christmas Homes Tour. The tour will take place Dec. 3. This event allows you to tour through several of the district’s private historic homes as they are decked in traditional holiday décor. And, if you’re not in town that weekend, the 1895 Moody Mansion museum is open for tours daily and is also dressed up for the holidays with festive trimmings and elaborately adorned Christmas trees throughout the home.

Live Holiday Entertainment For holiday entertainment, Galveston certainly won’t disappoint. The Grand 1894 Opera House, which is a gem in the island’s historic downtown district, offers no seat further than 70 feet from the stage for its exciting lineup of live holiday shows happening throughout November and December. Here you can catch shows like Jason Williams in Blood and Holly, The Official Blues Brothers Revue, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and The Temptations. www.thegrand.com Also, be sure to check out Moody Gardens’ Cirque Joyeux Holiday Show Dec 17 – 30 as a team of acrobats, aerialists, cats and more perform for an enchanting evening of circus, music and comedy with matinee, evening and dinner shows. www.moodygardens.com

The Santa Hustle If you’re a runner or just like to dress up, you’ll get a kick out of the Santa Hustle, one of Galveston’s wackiest events. More than 5,000 halfmarathon and 5K runners are expected to convene in Galveston Dec. 19 for this jolly race where participants are provided Santa attire – including a Santa suit shirt, Santa hat and beard – to wear along their journey. The route is lined with speakers playing holiday tunes and fuelup stations serving cookies and candy. Yum! www.santahustle.com/galveston

Canada

Australia has a ban on breeds that were specifically bred for fighting, to safeguard members of the public and other dogs. Prohibited breeds are:

Unlike many other countries, Canada does not have a blanket ban on dog breeds. Instead, certain provinces prohibit certain dangerous dog breeds. Expats planning to relocate to Canada should first ensure they are up to date with the most recent legislation for their destination. Travelers should ensure their route through the country does not include certain provinces if they are accompanied by a banned breed.

Pitbull Terrier breeds Dogo Argentino Fila Brasileiro Japanese Toso Presa Canario Australian law also prohibits the entry of domestic or non-domestic hybrid breeds (such as wolf crosses). Travelers, expats or émigrés traveling with a dog must sign a declaration stating that the dog is not an ineligible breed.

Switzerland Switzerland bans the import of dogs with cropped ears and docked tails. Dogs with these features can travel into the country temporarily for vacations or other short stays, but if you are relocating as an expat or émigré you will not be able to bring your dog with you. Laws in Switzerland restrict travel for breeds perceived as being predisposed to attack. Travelers hoping to bring any of the below dogs into the country must first ensure the dog passes a behavioral test, neuter the pet and obtain pet insurance. These breeds are: American Staffordshire Terrier Boerboel Bullmastiff Cane Corso Dogue Argentin Dogue de Bordeaux Fila Brasileiro English Mastiff Matin Espagnol Matin de Naples Pitbull Presa Canario Rottweiler Thai Ridgeback Dog Tosa Inu

The below breeds are banned from entering the country: Pitbull Terrier Japanese Tosa Dogo Argentino Fila Brasileiro According to UK regulations, If a dog has visual characteristics of any of the above it may be banned even if it does not match the breed. Whether or not the dog is to be banned could be decided in court, and if the dog is already in the country it could be euthanized.

The UK government looks set to soon pass legislation that will ban importation of dogs with docked tails, cropped ears and dogs younger than six months. Dog owners looking to travel or relocate should be sure to monitor the situation in case their dog falls into these categories.

France Much like Australia, France also has breed-based regulations in place to prohibit types of dangerous dogs from entering the country. France categorizes breeds into either banned or restricted. Category 1: banned breeds are defined as attack dogs and cannot be imported into France: Staffordshire Terrier American Staffordshire Terrier (Pitbull Terrier) Japanese Tosa Inu Boerbull Mastiff. Category 2 covers restricted breeds in France. From these breeds, only dogs registered with a pedigree recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry in France are permitted to enter the country. They can be transported on flights in the cargo hold only. Pedigree Tosa Inu Pedigree Staffordshire Terrier Pedigree American Staffordshire Terrier Rottweiler (Pedigree and Nonpedigree).

Mexico Mexico does not have a blanket ban on breeds across the country, however there is a list of regulations that any dog owning travelers, expats and émigrés must oblige by before traveling into the country including microchipping, rabies vaccinations and a parasite treatment. Dog owners must also obtain a health certificate unless traveling to Mexico from the United States. For more information, visit www.internationalinsurance.com
