with a dazzling array of high rise buildings, neon lights and billboards. Split into two by the harbour, Hong Kong has two main regions – Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The Island is the economic heart of the city and home to the lively waterfront locations of Causeway Bay, Central and Wan Chai. In contrast, Kowloon’s heart is the famous Nathan Road and its ‘Golden Mile’. Stretching for miles it’s packed with enormous shopping complexes, hotels, markets and bargains galore. While she feels like a cosmopolitan city, under her contemporary exterior is a traditional Chinese lady at heart. Peer down from Victoria Peak, wind your way through the streets of Mongkok and sample unusual dishes at the floating restaurants in Aberdeen. Markets are definitely a bonus for any visitor to Hong Kong; notably the ladies market, and without a doubt the harbour is the centrepiece, with its dazzling skyline and nightly ‘Symphony of the Lights’ fireworks and laser light extravaganza.

Experience Hong Kong Our favourite things to see and do CATCH THE TRAM UP TO THE PEAK – Enjoy the classic Hong Kong tradition and take in some of the best views across the city. In the funicular, try to sit on the right hand side for the best views on the way up. HIGH TEA – Relive the glamorous colonial past with High Tea at the Peninsula Hotel Hong Kong, down at Tsim Sha Tsui. HULLET HOUSE – Dine at the prized Loong Toh Yuen Cantonese restaurant. The highly acclaimed chef scours the street markets for new tastes and ingredients, adding his own contemporary interpretation to Cantonese cuisine. Throughout Hullet House you will find many examples of the blend between Hong Kong’s vibrant culture and the Chinoiserie style amongst four beautifully designed dining areas. Be sure to make a booking. GIANT BUDDHA – No trip to Hong Kong would be complete without a visit to the Giant Buddha which sits serenely atop Ngong Ping plateau amid the spectacular mountain scenery of Lantau Island. Climb more than 200 steps to reach the platform where the Buddha is seated. A fun way to reach this area is by taking the Ngong Ping 360 cableway from Tung Chung to the culturally themed village. TEMPLE STREET NIGHT MARKET – When the sun goes down, the traders have already laid out their wares and fortune tellers begin to emerge. The Temple Street Night Market is a popular street bazaar offering trinkets, tea ware, electronics, watches, menswear and jade – remember to haggle prices! Take the MTR to Jordan station on Kowloon and head for Temple Street. SKY 100 – Experience spectacular 360 degree views of this world renowned skyline and Victoria Harbour from the city’s tallest building. Located on the 100th floor of the International Commerce Centre (ICC) in Kowloon, it also features exceptional swift double-deck highspeed elevators, which reach the 100th floor in just 60 seconds! © Hong Kong Tourism Board

Macau Originally settled by the Portuguese, you’ll see their influence everywhere, from the street names, to classic Mediterranean architecture and fantastic food. You have to try one of Macau’s famous egg tarts while you’re here. Contrasting with all this history is Macau’s latest boom industry, the bright and sparkly casinos. Modelling itself on Las Vegas, Macau has had a building boom in recent years and wandering down the Cotai Strip past replicas of the Venetian, MGM Grand and Wynn casinos you’d be forgiven for wondering which city you’re in.

Our favourite things to see and do COTAI STRIP – This is where you will find giant precincts like the City of Dreams, home to the Crown, Grand Hyatt and Hard Rock Macau; the 3000 suite Venetian Hotel and Resort Macao, Four Seasons Macao, and Galaxy Mega Resort, which includes leading hotel brands Okura and Banyan Tree and is home to the world’s largest wave pool! If a bit of pampering is your holiday style, Macau is home to many internationally recognised day spas, at all major resorts. CITY OF DREAMS – Don’t miss the must see show ‘The House of Dancing Water’ – the world’s largest water extravaganza. This breathtaking show is staged in the purpose-built Dancing Water Theater which features approximately 2,000 seats. After being a world power centuries ago then closing their doors to outside influences, China has opened itself up again and is taking its place preening on the world stage. Diverse, exotic and mysterious, China is the world’s most populous country with a rich culture stretching back at least 4,000 years. China is as unique as it is eclectic, from the hustle and bustle of huge cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, to the quiet introspection of the monasteries and temples. Even the cuisine varies dramatically from one province to another. While cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are certainly must-see destinations, you can only truly appreciate this huge nation if you explore the countryside as well, to really appreciate the contrasts this country has to offer. The once imperial capital of 11 dynasties, Xian, is a haven of archaeological wonders. It is home to the Teracotta Warriors, the famed life sized tomb guards of Emperor Qin Si Huang and the only city in China that’s still has its ancient city wall surrounding it. It’s resurgence as an economic powerhouse has brought a new freedom and new opportunity for foreigners to explore this fascinating country. It is a country you can return to time and time again and always find something new to fascinate you.

Experience China Our favourite things to see and do THE BUND – The famous Shanghai waterfront, regarded as the symbol of Shanghai for hundreds of years, is a celebration of China’s diversity. The most attractive sight on the west side are the 26 various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and Renaissance. Not what you’d expect in China. HUTONGS – No visit to Beijing is complete without a experiencing the Hutongs. These densely packed alleys are the traditional neighbourhoods of Beijing and give you a great insight of how life use to be. The best way to get around is by rickshaw or pedicab. The noise, bustle and food aromas of the Hutongs are a sensory overload and great fun. DUMPLING DINNER – Experience the traditional dumpling cooked in a number of ways; boiled, steamed, fried or baked, with a variety of fillings. These little delights are like a taste explosion once you bite into them. Xian is a great city to try these as they are famous for their dumplings. SHOPPING – In the big cities, you can buy anything from the high street shops that you could in London. But then there are the bargains at the local markets! Shanghai is a mecca for the shopaholic. Check out Xin Tian Di street, a fashionable pedestrian street showcasing an array of boutique shops, galleries and cafés that still retain the feel of old Shanghai in the 1920s with the antique walls and tiles. Or head to Nanjing Road, lined with popular brand names. PEKING DUCK – When in Rome do as the Romans do. So when in Beijing, test your chopstick skills with a mouth-watering plate of Peking Duck. This delicacy of the region is eaten with pancakes, spring onions and hoisin sauce and best served in an original, century-old restaurant.
