ROYAL ALCÁZAR, SEVILLE One of the oldest palaces still in use in the world whose origins can be traced back to the time of early Moorish conquest of Seville in 712.

THE GREAT MOSQUE OF CÓRDOBA Inspired by the mosques of Damascus and Jerusalem, its original red and white Roman-inspired columns and arches would become influential in the world of architecture.

A Spanish highlight from Lauren’s trip was visiting Park Güell, architect Antoni Gaudi’s great creation. The world renown architectural masterpiece and one of the world’s most impressive public parks offers flowing mosaic walls, captivating a blend of historic and modern architecture and offers the best views of the city’s skyline.

“Make sure to pre book your Park Güell entry tickets as it gets sold out weeks in advance. After your visit, indulge in a delicious paella at one of the restaurants surrounding the park. Highly recommend Restaurant El Clot, it was great value and the meal was yum!”

Eat tapas like a local

Eating tapas in Spain is a social ritual and an important part of daily life. It even has its own verb, tapear. A complete tapas experience involves hopping from bar to bar and eating a couple in each one. • Don’t order everything in the first bar. Order a drink and one tapa to start. Once you have finished you can decide if you want another one there or move to the next bar. • The best tapas bars are usually crowded and noisy so be confident and forget your personal space. Make your way to the bar, nudge your way through to order, and rub elbows (literally) with those around you. • Every place has a specialty dish.

• Some bars give you a free tapa when you order a drink, others you pay as you go or at the end. • Don’t plan out your route too seriously. Be spontaneous, drop in at any lively looking place and see where the night takes you. • Keep your eye out for happy hours - in San Sebastian on a Thursday Gros has a pintxos (tapas) happy hour 7-10pm, €2 for a pintxo AND a drink!

• During your first few days in Spain this can be a little daunting so book a tapas tour before you go. A local guide will take you to a few of their favourite bars and show you how it’s done. It sets you up to tapear like a local for the rest of your stay.
