Rooted so deeply in nature you’ll need a boat or a seaplane to reach it, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort offers spectacular glamping in beautiful British Columbia. Nestled between mountain and river, many of the resort’s safari-style tents nudge the waterfront, furnished with antiques and all the glamour of the city, minus the urban chatter. Do whatever you want at whatever pace. Whether that’s fishing excursions and demanding hikes, or bear watching and white-water rafting amidst pristine views and the sounds of wildlife. Come nightfall, venture to the dining lodge for meals doused in gastronomic flare, before jumping into the Jacuzzi with a night cap.

ISL A N D HOPPI NG.

Azure waters met by angel sand, barrels of feta and tavernas serving Ouzo. Greece is undeniably idyllic. More-so when hopping between islands via ferry or cruise. There are multiple islets, but Mykonos is most likely the head-turner you dream about, with sugarcube buildings and bright blue doors. Santorini’s defined by its cliff-cascading position and cobalt domed roofs, while the islands of Chios and Samos are a little more sedate, famed for tiled villages and sweet Muscat wine. Ask about our island hopping holidays.

Marvel at the Northern Lights from your glass igloo FINLAND

Located in Finland’s Lapland region, we all know who the most famous resident here is, and we’d put money on Santa spending most of his downtime at an igloo resort. These snow-tucked hotels boast multiple glass igloos accommodating between two and four guests. Thermal glass and zero WiFi allows you to take a cosy digital detox beneath a fluttering of snow and the best starlit sky in Europe. With a domed glass design, igloos boast the best seats in the house to see Aurora Borealis, AKA the Northern Lights. Marbling the sky from August through to late April, for a once-in-a-lifetime auroras experience, book a stay here.

Japan’s pastel pink cherry blossoms smell as good as they look. While the trees seldom bear fruit, the blossom flourishes every spring, and with it comes an intoxicating floral scent. The Japanese celebrate Sakura (cherry blossom) with Hanami, literally “flower viewing” celebrations which take place in March and April. Locals organise flower appreciation picnics under the blooms, sitting beneath the bubble gum petals and sipping on ‘Sakura’ Pepsi. For a limited time, even the cola’s pink!

Live like a local with an Italian Agriturismo stay

Enjoy a unique, first-hand experience in rural Italy with an agriturismo stay. Bringing together “agriculture” and “tourism” it allows working farms to welcome guests for overnight stays. You’ll also be privy to generations of culinary know-how. The perfect way to experience authentic Italy.

You’ll need the dexterity of a mountain goat to navigate the staircase, and a good nose to hunt out its location, but hidden in the walls of Croatia’s Dubrovnik, on the edge of the city and overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is Buža. The only bar to sit on the sea-facing side of the city’s walls. It’s not mentioned in tourist brochures but ask any local for the “hole-in-the-wall bar” and they’ll nod you towards the cliff edge. If you’re lucky, you’ll find it in time for sunset.

the blues at Mardi Gras in 19 Beat New Orleans Beads, beer and blues music, New Orleans’ Mardi Gras is a chaotic explosion of celebration, with music and mayhem pulsating from every crack in the brickwork. Mardi Gras is French for ‘Fat Tuesday’ and symbolises the last day of indulging before fasting. This is Cajun country, so get acquainted with lively flavours. Lock lips with an infamous beignet at Café du Monde in the French Quarter and descend on the bakeries, open pre-dawn, for a traditional Mardi Gras ‘King Cake’. These gluttonous treats are ring-shaped and frosted. Inside there’s a tiny plastic baby – find it and tradition insists you have to buy next year’s cake.

20 WI NI TTNAENSZSA NT HI AE W I L D E B E E S T M I G R A T I O N An annual migration of epic proportions. And memories just as immense. Considered one of the world’s most profound events, witnessing the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti Park in Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara reserve is undisputedly, an experience of a lifetime. These are sights you may never observe again. A 1200-mile odyssey made by wildebeest, zebra and smaller (yet equally ambitious) creatures, you expect to be bowled over by their quest, but you’ll be equally astonished by the terrain. Vast swathes of rain fall over a never-ending horizon and the savanna, barren yet beautiful, is a kingdom ruled solely by animals. By daybreak you’ll be tracking the Big Five, by lunchtime you’re dining with a local family. And by the ninth day you’ll have participated in one of nature’s greatest journeys. This one trumps everything.

Explore Seoul’s electrifying streets, Gwangjang Market, one of Seoul’s oldest and most vibrant traditional markets is a street food paradise. The knife-cut noodles at Gohyan Kalguksu, made famous in the Netflix series ‘Street Food: Asia’ are truly to die for. Classical beauty and deep-rooted history sit side by side with modern innovation and a fastpaced food scene, all encircled by a dramatic coastline that shifts from beach paradise to winter wonderland with the seasons. A holiday in South Korea is full of the unexpected.

Walk the Inca Trail and

See the sun rise over Machu Picchu.

“The Inca Trail follows ancient paths high into the Andes. The 4-day, 3-night hike is about 40 kilometres, much of it steep. But anyone who’s done it will tell you the views are worth every step: Incan ruins, cloud forest and majestic valleys are laid out like breadcrumbs en route to Machu Picchu. Local law requires trekkers have a permit and guide, so talk to us about our favourite tours, which sell out up to a year in advance. If you’re keen for the sights but not the trek, take a scenic train ride from nearby Ollantaytambo. You’ll also love Cusco, the beautiful colonial city where your experience begins. It’s worth staying a few days to acclimatise to the altitude before your trek — or just to try Chica, a traditional Andean tipple made from yellow maize!”

the Croatian 23 Cycle Coast! From big wows to hidden gems, Croatia is a haven for cyclists who love to get off the beaten tourist trail and explore the very heart of the beautiful Dalmatian Coast. Beautiful vineyards, historical cultural highlights, impressive landscapes and stunning beaches await you on an adventurous cycle tour. With medium length rides each day along trails and quiet roads, you’ll see sights and hidden gems most will miss or don’t even know about! Pedal leisurely through Hvar’s cobbled lanes, Korčula’s small-town feel, Split’s harbour esplanade and Dubrovnik’s walled history, meet friendly locals, cool off in crystal clear seas and toast a fun day in the saddle with delicious local wine from a nearby vineyard and indulge in local delicacies. All levels of riders are catered for and cycling tours are very popular with solo travellers. And you certainly won’t feel alone for long as you pedal along quiet rural roads surrounded by newfound friends.

It’s just hockey. In Canada, you don’t need to specify the ice; it’s a national given. It’s also a national obsession. Imagine 18,000 passionate fans screaming in your ears, the thwack of a puck on stick and the constant hiss of razorsharp blades slicing through ice. If you’re lucky enough to be in Vancouver at the same time as the Vancouver Canucks, throw down your Canadian bucks and buy tickets to a game. At the Rogers Arena, the atmosphere is guaranteed electric, with erratic bursts of 80s rock music, bellowing fans and a heady mix of popcorn, beer and hot dogs. Gather rink-side 30-minutes prior to opening face-off and watch the players go through their warm-ups. If you hear the sudden ‘thfffft’ of a wayward puck, you better dive behind the perspex.

VISIT THE MONA LISA & STROLL THE CHAMPS ELYSEES

France is just one of those destinations you must visit at least once in your lifetime! Le Louvre housing Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous art piece Mona Lisa, the prestigious Champs Elysee, the world-famous Eiffel Tower and the River Seine are land marks Paris is known the world over. Sip a café au lait in a chic Parisian café (our favourite Café de Flore in Saint-Germain), enjoy the flaky butteriness of a freshly baked croissant from a patisserie (the eclairs from L’Eclair de Genie are devine!), browse famous works of art in Le Louvre (take a stroll through the iconic park Les Tuileries in front of Le Lourvre), climb the Arc de Triomphe or Eiffel Tower for views across the city, explore boutiques in the cobbled streets or prestigious Belle-Epoque department stores such as Galeries Lafayette along the Champs-Élysées. Paris is always a good idea!

2024 Our Top Guided Holidays

M O D E S O F T R A V E L | G U I D E D H O L I D AY S

What’s your travel style?

United kingdom Britain & Ireland In-Depth IN THREE(ISH) WORDS UK & Ireland on a plate. GOOD FOR Travellers who want to see and do it all. IN A NUTSHELL An in-depth tour of Britan and Ireland over 24 days. Discover legendary cities, seaside villages and quaint country hamlets from Abbey Road to Penny Lane and Stonehenge to Clava Cairns.

Forget everything you thought you knew about guided holidays because tours have transformed. A revolution of sorts, modern touring offers something to suit everyone. With so many great reasons to choose a guided holiday, here are six we go nuts for. Incredible access, unique opportunities These sorts of offerings you can’t find without a guide.

Cosmos. Witness the 5km face of Alaska’s Mears Glacier. Trafalgar. Get on the guest list for a private dinner at the Vatican. Globus. VIP access to the Vatican Museums and the Eiffel Tower so you needn’t wait in long lines. Back-Roads. Maximum 14-18 guests, savour lunch at Rick Stein’s signature ‘The Seafood Restaurant’ in the UK. Contiki. For 18 to 35-year-olds, party on an island-hopping yacht in Turkey. Topdeck. For 18 to 39year olds, visit a wacky abandoned jail in Estonia. Intrepid. Sustainable, small group travel. Share a meal with Buddhist monks in South Korea.

IF YOU LIKE History and landscapes. THEN YOU’LL LOVE Visiting Stonehenge, Cliffs of Moher, London, Edinburgh and Isle of Skye.

1 | I want a totally unique travel experience. TA K E O N E LO O K at the extensive itineraries offered by tour companies and the list of activities reads like a Lonely Planet best-seller. There’s always a strong emphasis on making your holiday both varied and memorable. You could go exploring abandoned jails in Estonia, or come face-to-face with the threemile stretch of Alaska’s Mears Glacier. On another route, you might stay the night in a French château, or camp out in the Thai jungle, cruise Halong Bay or take a Mafia themed walking tour around Palermo. For those who tire of the well-trampled tourist haunts, guided holidays go above and beyond to ensure you have experiences that few others can achieve, such as skip the line privileges at the Vatican’s papal conclave and the Colosseum in Rome and visits to the very estate where The Sound of Music was filmed. You’ll have a holiday which focuses on local insight, whether that’s dining in a small Italian trattoria or sipping at bouillabaisse made by the descendants of French nobility — in their 17th-century farmhouse no less. Your experience can be as luxe or as lowkey as you wish, from wine tasting in the bellows of a French cave, to a cheesemaking masterclass in the Sicilian Hills. Basically, if you can imagine it, then you can probably do it.

STANDOUT MOMENT Join the locals of Killarney for an Irish dinner of traditional and modern dishes with festive Gaelic tunes. HOT TIP Snap your photo in the tongue-twisting town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.

ASIA Pantheon, Rome, Italy.

Classic Vietnam IN THREE(ISH) WORDS Cultural charm & varied cuisine. GOOD FOR Travellers who want to experience the best of Vietnam.

2 | I like to get off-the-beaten-path.

3 | I prefer small-sized groups.

4 | I travel for the foodie experiences.

5 | I like to explore one country in depth.

6 | I want memories with my family.

Regardless of size, almost every tour company can get you off-the-beatentrack. Whether that’s staying in remote Irish castles, or riding the bamboo train in Cambodia, it’s easy to have a refreshingly different experience.

For a personalised holiday experience, consider travelling with a smaller tour group which limits its numbers. Some have a max of 14 guests, others are 18. Either way, you get to enjoy tailor-made tours with an intimate group.

You might have to forgo the belt and give into culinary pleasantries. On a guided holiday you could visit a local agritourism farm in Dubrovnik, dine in the home of a Thai family, or learn the traditional techniques behind Scottish whisky. The foodie experiences are extensive.

One country, done in depth, is a popular option for Kiwis, and while there are multiple tours covering several countries, it’s just as easy to find one which really delves into a single culture, its cuisine and history.

Just imagine the kids’ smiles while water rafting in Croatia, or gelato tasting in Rome! Certain itineraries are created solely for families with choices broken down into categories such as active, wildlife and teenager. You will join forces with 3-5 likeminded families.

IN A NUTSHELL Experience historical temples, laze on the spectacular coastline, gorge on delicious food and explore lively cities – all with a touch of comfort – on this 15-day adventure. IF YOU LIKE FOMO-inducing Instagram moments… THEN YOU’LL LOVE The bustling centres of Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. STANDOUT MOMENT Float to sleep on a traditional junk boat in Halong Bay. HOT TIP Try the best Vietnamese Pancakes (Banh Khoai) in Hue - they make for a great lunch.

THE SHORT LIST | EXPLORING THE AMERICAS

go North

When planning a great American adventure, the sheer size of both continents can be overwhelming. To help, we suggest the next places you’ll love, based on old favourites.

1 | CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

2 | SANTA BARBARA, CALIF.

➝ If you like New York

➝ If you like Santa Monica

Air New Zealand flies direct to Chicago from Auckland. The birthplace of both legendary pizza (try the late Anthony Bourdain’s favourite pizzeria, Bonci) and the world’s first skyscraper, located on LaSalle and Adams Street. Chicago’s theatre scene rivals Broadway and Magnificent Mile delivers the ultimate shopping spree. For gangster vibes, Green Mill bar is where Al Capone socialised.

Where wide palm-lined roads meet mellow beaches, snazzy boutiques hide in the Montecito foothills and sun-soaked cafés serve stylish brunch. Santa Barbara’s most happening neighbourhood, The Funk Zone, is an arts community of sorts, while the Santa Ynez Mountains provide idyllic day hikes and gorgeous wineries. The climate allows for year-round surfing and a fruitful harvest, with farmers markets popping up daily.

By PRUE DUNBAR, House of Travel Upper Riccarton

“The dream of driving a convertible across the USA is so achievable. Maybe you’d prefer a plush motorhome or a Harley? From three days in Napa Valley to a week in Texas, road trips are one of the best ways to explore.”

2

5 | BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

1

3

4

|

Man-made islands float atop Lake Titicaca, the world’s largest navigable lake. The residents here build their homes, furniture, and even the ‘land’ itself from totora reed. Get off the beaten track and join them for an overnight homestay. It’s basic, but pleasantly different.

6 10 9

7

7 | IGUAZU FALLS

8 | QUITO, ECUADOR

5

➝ If you like Niagara Falls

➝ If you like Valencia, Spain

Iguazu Falls literally blows Niagara out of the water with sheer velocity. The Argentina side is arguably more impressive than Brazil’s, but it’s The Devil’s Throat which really dumbfounds. With multiple waterfalls pounding from heights of 82 metres, it’s an almighty sight. Allow two full days to explore Iguazu thoroughly.

As one of the world’s highest capital cities, the air might be thinner at 2850 metres, but the experiences are rich. Soak up the artworks of famed sculpture, Fundación Guayasamín, or get lost in the city’s crinkled Old Town. Calle La Ronda is a narrow, cobbled street which comes alive at night.

4 | MEMPHIS & NASHVILLE

➝ If you like Yosemite Nat’l Park

➝ If you like New Orleans

The world’s first national park, Yellowstone is an American icon. Bursting at its 2,219,789-acre seams with stunning wildlife and over 10,000 thermal wonderments, restless volcanic activity is everywhere. In fact, so large is its volcanic bowl, the first geologists couldn’t even find it. They eventually realised they were standing in it. At 56km wide and 80km long, it’s easy to see their mistake.

Sip on a glass of Jack Daniels and write a song — it’s the Nashville way. Come for the music and venture to Lower Broadway for honky tonks (loud old bars full of guaranteed good times) and live performances. Then it’s onto Memphis for musical kings and crooners. Visit Sun Studio, where Elvis recorded his first song, and his Colonial-style mansion, Graceland. Come nightfall, nurse a Bourbon at B.B King’s ‘Blues Club.’

H OU S E O F T R AV E L

➝ If you like South East Asia

Some cities have a pulse, and Buenos Aires, like Paris, is one of them. Street side dining overflows into balmy streets, markets erupt with chatter and passionate Tango dancers prove that romance is never dead. Like Paris, the coffee’s strong and the pastries are to die for.

By JANINE TAYLOR, House of Travel New Plymouth

C H I CAG O, U SA

“The culinary offerings from Santiago’s little lanes are sensational — and remarkably good value. The Plaza de Aramas is the city’s focal point and a great place to start. Grab a bite, peruse an art stall and then de-cork a bottle of local Cab Sav.”

9 | ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE

10 | RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

➝ If you like Cappadocia, Turkey

➝ If you like Gold Coast

Both look like Mars, but Atacama feels like you’ve actually left Earth. From San Pedro de Atacama you can explore an otherworldly terrain. We love the enormous sand dunes of Death Valley and the mirror-like salt flats with spectacular reflections, while the night’s cloudless sky is a star-gazer’s fantasy.

It’s a different kind of hedonism, but Rio, much like the GC, is partying, dancing, sunshine and endless beach. ‘Jandal-culture’ reigns supreme, but you’ll still see plenty of well-dressed cariocas; the shopping is superb. Meet Christ the Redeemer, experience Copacabana beach and sip on caipirinhas.

DESTINATION SP OTLIGHT | MEXICO

Why Mexico? Because the Caribbean Sea is impossibly blue. Because ancient Maya civilisations left their glorious stamp, and because well, burritos! House of Travel’s Charlotte Campbell spills the Mexican beans… W H E R E D O K I W I S STAY ?

W H AT A R E T H E B E ST T H I N G S T O D O?

A trip to Mexico offers some amazing fully inclusive luxury stays — with both couples-only or family-friendly resorts, there is something for everyone.

1 / ANCIENT CANCÚN TEMPLES The Ek Balam temple is a little less visited than its famous neighbour, Chichen Itza, but rises out of the jungle like a Mayan beacon. You can make the relatively easy climb to the top of the Oval Palace, or if you like a challenge, hike up the steep steps to the acropolis — the views are staggering.

1 / CANCÚN F O R : Sun soaked beach resorts Sometimes you just need a beach, especially when it fronts the Caribbean Sea. Cancún is a busy tourist town with a great shoreline, warm water, plenty of shopping and a heaving nightlife. 2 / CABO SAN LUCAS F O R : White sand, yachts and water sports A resort city in Baja California Sur, Cabo boasts a slew of water activities, from jet-skiing to parasailing. The wharf’s pedestrian walkway is lined with trendy hangouts. 3 / TULUM F O R : Boho chic Just 90 minutes south of Cancún is the bohemian town of Tulum. Between the laid back beach clubs and shabby-chic cafés, there’s a mesmerising cliff-clinging Mayan temple and miles of pearly white beaches. 4 / SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO F O R : Indulgence favoured by celebrities The Hollywood elite (and in-the-know Kiwis) flood here for an all-round hedonistic lifestyle. With a bevy of plush bars and decadent dining.

2 / S W I M M I N G I N U N D E RWAT E R C AV E S The Yucatán Peninsula is well known for its ‘cenotes’ — beautiful sinkholes suitable for swimming. Go for a dip at Ik Kil, and climb down the natural limestone stairs before jumping into its teal water. 3 / A F O O D L O V E R’ S H AV E N As well as the infamous guac, don’t miss delicious carne asada in Mexico’s north (beef marinated, grilled and then sliced into burritos), Pacific Coast seafood, and for die-hard foodies, the central city of San Miguel de Allende boasts Hotel Matilda. Its restaurant, Moxi, is overseen by Enrique Olvera, one of the country’s most celebrated chefs. 4 / B E AC H , P L E A S E But of course. Mexican beaches offer swathes of platinum sand and clear blue water. In Cancún, Playa Tortugas is the beach favoured by locals, while the sleepy isle of Isla Mujeres, 12km off the Yucatán Peninsula, is home to the pristine Playa del Norte.

Up 'n' coming corners of Europe F O R:

Culture vultures

YO UR TRAV EL STYLE: Culture and history combined, you thrive in locations where the stories leave you wide-eyed. A country 7,000 years in the making, Malta bears the stamp of the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs and Normans, before the Knights of St John who ruled from 1530 to 1798, finally left the most lasting mark. Malta’s past – specifically in its capital city, Valletta – will astound. It quite literally heaves with liveable, breathable history. Moulded by centuries of savage warfare, including invasions as recent as WWII, Valletta is defined by its great fortresses and a network of secret underground tunnels. Some of these housed British spies and Maltese allies as they plotted against Germany; deciphering enemy code from within Lascaris War Rooms. Malta’s artifacts are seemingly endless, from Valletta to the back-in-time villages that seep with fascinating stories, you can’t help but fall over its antiques.

F O R:

Active relaxers

YO UR TRAV EL STYLE: A seeker of cultural highlights, from the local food and drink, to history and traditions. Geography and history have blessed Sicily with both astounding beauty and mouth-watering cuisine; the architecture dappled with Greek and Arabian influence, its food sweetened by North African flavours. But it’s the relatively undiscovered Aeolian archipelago that’s really stirring the interest of travellers. Comprising seven slow-paced islands, Aeolian life still swings to the pendulum of the 1940s. Step onto Lipari and you’ll be greeted by the lingering scent of sage. The dusty streets warm beneath your feet; deserted save for fishermen and local Sicilians retrieving laundry from their balcony. Come nightfall, the European-night glows. Stone houses and cobbled pavements still emanate with heat; the smell of sun-baked terracotta almost as seductive as home-cooked Sicilian cuisine.

F O R:

Adventurers

YO UR TRAV EL STYLE: Always in pursuit of the unique, you crave to get off the beaten track and to fill your passport with multiple stamps. Your eyes won’t adjust. One-hundred metres below ground and it’s pitch black. This is Bled, Slovenia. You’re kayaking the abandoned chambers of Bled Mine and it’s a black abyss. So quiet only the stalactites murmur. Defined by soaring alpine peaks and pine-green valleys, townships flecked with toy town houses and glacial lakes, Slovenia’s landscape is startling. The rolling pastures – so steep you’ll strain your neck – are freckled with farmers tending to their land, the air so pure it cleanses the soul. Yes, Slovenia is beautiful, but it’s the boom in adventure tourism that’s really putting her on the map. From underground kayaking to skiing in the Slovenian Alps and lengthy treks across the mountains, if it’s a high-octane pursuit you seek, it’s an adventurist’s dream you’ll find.

Around the world in nine noodles.

Six spectacular speakeasies.

Slurp, twirl, scoop or sip — Nine very good reasons to explore these incredible countries.

Hidden gems in some of our favourite cities. Getting in is half the fun. S P E A K E A SY. \ ˈ s p i ː k i ː z i \ noun. 1. Originally referred to the illicit drinking houses of the Prohibition-era (1920-1933) USA. Now a hard-to-find establishment modelled after those secretive barrooms.

Shoyu ramen, Japan

Tallarines verdes, Argentina

Payasam, India

With a soy sauce based broth, these noodles are pure Asian comfort food.

So it looks like a bi-product from The Ghostbusters, but it tastes heavenly.

This festive noodle pudding is topped with ginger, golden raisins and cashews.

Pappardelle, Sicily

Spaetzle, Germany

Trenette, Italy

The widest, most robust ribbons of pasta in the repertoire.

These simple soft egg noodles usually sit beneath a saucy meat dish.

The kingpins of pasta, Italians love their trenette: narrow, flat and similar to linguine.

Chicken noodle soup, USA

Pad Thai, Thailand

Ash reshteh, Azerbaijan

Who doesn’t love chicken noodle soup? Even better from an all-American diner.

Pad Thai is awful. Said no one ever. The million ingredients all work as one.

A hearty stomach-filler packed with thin noodles, beans and herbs.

Featherweight, New York City

Foxglove, Hong Kong

Jungle Boy, Melbourne

Brooklyn packs a punch. The only sign you’ve found the door to this inventive speakeasy is a towering mural of an exhausted boxer hugging his bag. Hiding at the heart of a thoroughly hip neighbourhood, this dimly lit space offers incredibly creative cocktails to those in the know. The vibe is laid-back but exclusive, and the bartenders are far friendlier than their zip code would imply. Ask them about speciality liquors.

An exquisite find behind a bespoke umbrella shop. This spot wins for best backstory: It’s meant to be the work of a globe-trotting British gentleman. Enter by finding the right umbrella at the back of the boutique: Touch it and a door opens to reveal the retro-futuristic speakeasy. House of Travel Remuera’s Cat Parker shares a secret: “Find a small floral painting. Touch it until it glows to open more spaces.” Inside, definitely order like Bond.

Get tiki in the urban jungle. This low-key space is hidden behind a refrigerator door at the back of late-night sandwich factory Boston Sub on Chapel Street, says House of Travel Lower Hutt’s Hayley Bill. Inspired by The Jungle Book, it gives you the sense of walking into the bricked garden of a grown Mowgli. Reggae and funky pop plays over a crowd that feels like old friends. Lean into the Tarzan of it all and order a flaming concoction in a tiki mug.

The Baxter Inn, Sydney

Stagger Lee, Berlin

The Art of Duplicity, Cape Town

Curiously conspicuous on global Best Bars listings. Ironic for a speakeasy, The Baxter Inn boasts a list of international accolades from those who rank bars for a living. With a mammoth whiskey wall, it’s renowned for unusual releases with unpronounceable names. “Some of the city’s best barmen work here, so definitely try a cocktail,” says House of Travel Upper Riccarton’s Prue Dunbar. Find it by walking down an unmarked lane off Clarence Street and turning on what looks like a dead end (The doorman is the welcome giveaway).

The Wild West, but with polish. Not entirely hidden but definitely one of the city’s best kept secrets, the whole place evokes America’s Old West. Think stick candles, saloon doors and elegant leather furnishings. Ring the doorbell and step back in time. The cocktail list pours heavy on American whiskey and flaunts house-made syrups and copious fresh fruit. The staff are especially knowledgeable, so though there is an impressive cocktail list, we recommend going off-piste and asking for something bespoke.

Reward for a riddle. This newly opened spot might be the closest you can get to a 1920’s speakeasy without a time machine. But getting in takes some doing. Make a booking on the bar’s website and receive further instructions: You cannot show up without the password. Once inside, toast your patience with unorthodox offers like the Sicilian Neck Tie (olive-oil washed vodka, limoncello and syrups) or the Hillbilly Breakfast Flip (bourbon, smoked maple syrup and free-range quail egg). You read that right.

We’re often asked about solo travel and with good reason: It’s a great way to get out there! House of Travel can even match you with a room share. Here are some of our favourite ideas.

Some of our top cruise lines offer staterooms designed for just one! Norwegian Cruise Line boasts Single Studios on its resort-style ships, which you’ll find heading to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea. Even better, the ships offer singles lounges and informal meet-ups. Social solos easily meet dining companions or friends for life. What was the main reason for going to East Africa? We were going to see the legendary Great Migration, described as the greatest wildlife show on earth, a cycle that has been going on for thousands of years. The largest movement of animals on the planet where around two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles cross the crocodile infested Mara River between Kenya and Tanzania seeking greener pastures for fresh grazing and to have their young.

When is the best time to see the migration? You can always see the animals moving between Kenya’s Masai Mara in the north and Tanzania’s Serengeti in the south. Both national parks are unfenced and animals can move freely. Typically, around July the massive herds start to move north, with river crossings between July and October. Usually at its peak by November, when driven by the rains, the animals make the hazardous return to the Serengeti.

Aspiring to a safari? If you consider instant coffee “roughing it,” we can help. This is exploration at its finest. By MEL HUBBER, House of Travel Ferrymead NGORONGORO CRATER

“After a safari in the wilderness, you’ll welcome a decadent high tea served in The “T” Lounge at Fairmont The Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. It’s very refined. Just make sure you remove your khaki stubbies — no shorts here!”

Stay in a luxury all-inclusive lodge perched right on the rim of the earth’s largest intact crater.

TARANGIRE N AT I O N A L PA R K

Stay in the heart of Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. Highlights include enormous elephant herds and abundant wildlife, even in the dry season.

TENTED CAMPS

How did you get around? We took a variety of scheduled small domestic flights and drives between camps. Some of the lodges have their own landing strips close by with flights linking them together. After our first flight into the Mara we were greeted by our driver/guides with morning tea, strong Kenyan coffee and freshly made biscuits. Then we had a 4x4 game drive on the way to our luxury camp. Some roads can be bumpy, hot and dusty and we had a couple of longer drives. Flying between camps took the edge off what would have been some long, more arduous drives.

Where did you stay? We stayed in stunning lodges and luxury tented camps. They hark back to the golden age of safari exploration but with modern day 5-star service, luxury accommodation, huge king beds and lavish showers. A favourite of mine was a baroque château

perched on the edge of the famous Ngorongoro Crater overlooking 8,000kms of pristine African wilderness.

TIPS / SAFARI CHIC

How long are the flights? Closer than Europe — flying from Auckland via Australia you can land in Johannesburg in just over 16 hours (and another four hours up to Nairobi). Nairobi has so many top-class hotels and is one of the most cosmopolitan African cities.

What was the food like? Food was fresh and abundant and beautifully prepared. These were luxury camps after all! At one of the camps all meals were in the main dining area which looked out onto their own organic gardens. Drinks from the wellstocked bar flowed freely as we lazed around on comfy sofas reading inspiring books from the camp library about the Mara and the Serengeti.

DO wear neutral colours like browns,

beiges and khakis to help you blend in with the surroundings.

What were your highlights?

DO wear a wide brimmed

hat during the day, but not a pith helmet. DO wear shoes to dinner in the lodge and remember it’s informal, so smart casual pants or skirt and a shirt or blouse at dinner time is fine. Shorts and t-shirts during the day. DON’T wear socks with sandals at any time, it is illegal (not really). DO cover up with light coloured

clothing at sunrise and sunset to avoid mosquito bites.

“Africa did not disappoint — Hearing a lion roar and wondering how far away it was, sitting on your balcony watching an elephant silhouetted by the setting sun — everlasting memories.”

A hot bath filled with rose petals overlooking the Ngorongoro crater from our private thatched suite after a long day of driving was something I will never forget. A heart-warming welcome song from the staff brought tears to my eyes as we arrived at one incredible camp. Everywhere we went we were met and warmly greeted with fresh coffee and morning tea, or in some cases, Champagne and roses. The game drives were outstanding and by day two we had seen four out of the Big Five!

On the western border of the Masai Mara Game Reserve you can choose to stay in one of the finest “tents” on earth.

CRUISING SPOTLIGHT

10 QUESTIONS | EVERYTHING CRUISE we thought was lost reappeared before our eyes in all its glory and with all its secrets, immediately awash in fable and myth. After all these years, in the evening, as Lipari grows more and more pink, we still sit by the sea expecting to see Ulysses’ ship pass by. Salina’s an event for all of us; for my brother and me, for our wives Carla and Lina, for our many kids. We first brought them here when they were very little. The house didn’t have a roof yet, and at night we would stretch out below one large roof and stare up at the stars in the sky. In that place, still unspoiled in many respects, the mystery of nature really enthralled our little familial microcosm. On August 10th, during the Perseids (known to Italians as the night of San Lorenzo), all of us — big and small — would wish on a shooting star. That year a secret was spilled; the youngest of the children couldn’t resist and confided his wish to us. “My wish is that daddy and uncle can make their film,” he said. The film we succeded in making — after a year and despite tons of setbacks — is called “The Night of San Lorenzo.” I realize I might be waxing a touch poetic, so I should say, less fancifully, that in Salina all of us feel like we’re part of a

ship with Salina and the Aeolian Islands is not based solely on our admiration and acknowledg ment of its beauty, harmony and colors; it is also based on the heartbreak that we feel when faced with the abysses of the sea, the merciless violence of its storms, the almost sacred burden of its active and dormant volcanoes. An image of life’s complex ities and ambiguities. That’s why Salina will never be just a vacation spot for us. Salina is actually two islands for us, two experiences. The first Salina – already talked about – bore the enchantment of discovering a wilderness removed from indus trial civilization. Wilderness may be an excessive word. It may smack of romanticism (deep down, Rousseau resides in all our hearts). Put plainly, living on the island back then meant rediscovering ancient ways, getting in sync with nature’s rhythms and tempos, even at its difficult aspects. It was an enchantment, on the other hand, that didn’t hide its dark side. The island’s centuries-old isolation led to poverty and abandon. The stacks of houses, the caper fields, the worn paths for herding animals: each told painful stories of emigration and good byes. Maybe that’s another reason days on the

Are cruises good value for money?

What happens when the ship gets to port?

A / Definitely! Prices include accommodation in your choice of cabin, buffet dining, main restaurants and entertainment. Surcharges are added for speciality restaurants (many endorsed by celebrity chefs) and certain shows. All-inclusive beverages are common on super luxury cruises, while others offer promotions and drinks’ packages. On-board credit might be available (effectively on-board spending money) and you should always ask if gratuities are included.

A / It’s a slick operation with people on hand to guide you on and off the ship, and there are organised shore excursions if you want to do them. Sometimes they are included in your fare, others you can opt to do depending on what takes your fancy. During the cruise there are destination briefings with local tips to highlight what gems you’ll discover in the upcoming ports. You can choose to do your own thing at each stop, or join one of the pre-arranged tours.

6 Are cabins claustrophobic? A / Outside cabins ensure you

always have sea views, and balcony cabins provide fresh air. Many internal cabins now have authentic virtual windows, but always address concerns with your consultant.

A / Competition amongst the cruise lines to enthral younger guests is huge, with anything from scavenger hunts and pizza parties, to ice-skating and go-karting. Some cruise ships even have water parks and rock climbing walls to keep young minds active. Even if your tot is as young as twelve months, there are cruises with nursery care. Tell your consultant what your kids like to do, what you need as parents, and what you enjoy doing altogether. Then they’ll find the right ship for everyone.

2 What is the on-board food like? A / You’ll love the food. It seems

like almost every diet and taste is catered for. From casual to fine dining, flavours are often matched to the different destinations that you are travelling through.

5 Why is the cruise industry booming right now? A / Financially, they’re accessible for everyone. There are cruises for the budget conscious or those wanting a grand journey over a longer timeframe. There are more inclusions than ever before, and the facilities and itineraries are extensive. With new innovative ships the onboard activities & entertainment continue to evolve and are sure to impress.

7

H OU S E O F T R AV E L

A / Not at all. From zip lining to cooking classes, electric bikes, thermal spas and Champagne brunches, cruising really does suit every age.

9 When is the best time to book? A / Now! Book in advance to ensure you don’t miss out. You can make booking early all part of the fun. Lock in your cruise 12 months in advance, then spend the following 10 months fine tuning the details, such as land add-ons and enriching cultural experiences, or reservations for that speciality restaurant you are dying to try.

Am I going to get seasick? A / The modern cruise ships of today carry the most up to date stabiliser technology to ensure you get a smooth ride. To minimise the motion on-board choose a cabin on a lower level and aim for a more midship location — booking as early as possible. Ask us about cruising in calmer waters, such as cruises in Asia. We’ve read your tea leaves and it predicts you’ll be attending the largest festival for tea lovers next January. The Toronto Tea Festival is held annually and brings together brewers and brands for a tea-riffic time.

The height of summer calls for an ice-cream churned by the scoop-sperts (gelato scooping experts) at Taste of Tasmania. Or a long summer’s lunch perhaps? Fronting Hobart’s sun-soaked waterfront enjoy gourmet demonstrations, food workshops and plenty of eating.

Held annually this festival is one of the leading culinary festivals in Australia and offers a celebration of flavours produced by Victoria’s food & wine industries.

Discover wines made in all corners of Japan in the one spot in Tokyo. Enjoy the colourful beauty of the Japanese spring while you sip on beverages of your choice.

Noosa Eat & Drink Festival in 2024 will feature its ever popular Long-lunch (in a surprise location), a fantastic line up of Australia’s favourite celebrity chefs doing cooking demonstrations in the festival village and of course events on Noosa’s iconic beach.

Every year, Haro, deep in Spain’s Rioja region, hosts a multi-day festival. At night, the cobblestone roads erupt into a huge street party, and at dawn, the ‘wine battle’ starts. A water fight of sorts, vessels of every variety are filled with red wine and thrown at fellow revellers.

Known as one of the greatest food festivals in the world, this summertime tradition offers an impressive array of eateries showcasing the city’s culinary excellence and diversity.

Five glorious days to enjoy a slap-up lobster dinner, but also the perfect excuse to visit Rockland Harbor, Maine’s busiest fishing port just 90-minutes north of Portland. With a Ferris wheel, races, parades and pageants, the lobsters are almost outshined.

The annual Marathon du Médoc is a 26-mile “race” through Bordeaux’ Médoc vineyards, with 23 wine stops en route. There’s also cheese, musical breaks and oyster tasting to keep your spirits up. Most partakers cross the finish line six hours later — on their knees and giggling. Registrations open in March – be quick!

Three weekends of gourmet events across multiple exotic islands, Hawaii’s annual food festival attracts 10,000 attendees and 150 chefs. Chow down on tropical tastes on Oahu, Maui and the Island of Hawai‘i.

This one’s a month-long line-up of gourmet food and drink events scattered citywide. From oodles of noodles to wine and whiskey walks, your belly says book now.

Every November through to December, York’s medieval streets transform into a festive playground. With icerinks and Christmas markets, mulled wine flows and justbaked mince pies sit in every tea shop window.

TRACEY EDGECOMBE HOUSE OF TRAVEL NEW PLYMOUTH

Famed for its natural beauty, colonial history (and of course, its tea production) Sri Lanka’s warm, crystal clear waters encourage exploration and adventure. Explore stunning beaches, tropical reefs and sea life and rainforests which are home to elephants, leopards, monkeys and other wildlife. The rolling hills of the Sri Lankan tea country, carpeted in rich tea plantations is one of the island highlights. If keen on a bit of adventure, I highly recommend a midnight ascent of Adam’s Peak, arriving at the summit by dawn and sitting above the clouds to watch the sun rise – an awe inspiring experience.

Alaska is a grand adventure! Brilliant blue glaciers, whales, moose, bears and remote wilderness - no matter where you go, you can be assured it will be jaw-droppingly amazing. The most popular way to explore the Inside Passage is by cruise and you realise just how inaccessible these tiny towns are. My favourite was Ketchikan, a gold-rush town built on a boardwalk, followed closely by Skagway where you can take a train to the top of White Pass and marvel at the amazing views of both the USA and Canada. Stunning any time of the year! See the dancing Northern Lights, go snowshoeing in the winter and enjoy hiking and wildlife watching in the summer. Hot Tip | Enjoy a drink and fresh seafood chowder at Skagway’s historic Red Onion Saloon. Built in 1897, it was one of the finest bordellos back in the day!

Ready to escape, relax and explore? Discover desert islands and private hideaways. Explore chocolate-scented hills, rice terraces and Spanish churches. Indulge in Filipino delicacies and go in search of curious Tarsiers – this is the Philippines, a paradise with personality! What I love about the Philippines is how the natural beauty is still wild and free — gorgeous white sand beaches, dusty roads with cute wooden shacks—it’s like the landscape hasn’t been messed with. Getting from A to B requires trundling into the back of a Jeepney, along with the market chickens and a bucket of sardines! And a ‘boat tour’ is more like a ride in a bamboo rowboat! Don’t miss the Bohol landscapes, explore the underwater paradise of Palawan and take a ride in a Jeepney – it’s a real experience!

Movie buffs should head to Gonpachi Nishi Azabu, famed for being the restaurant featured in the Kill Bill movie, and the food is great too! Chocolate lovers (like me) will enjoy heading to the Kit Kat Café in Ginza with over 400 flavours available - try wasabi flavour if you dare! Tech lovers rejoice – you’ll love Akihabara, a major electronic, anime and games centre in the Otaku shopping district. In the South it’s all about soul, music and good food. In New Orleans, Jazz and the blues bring the French Quarter to life along famous Bourbon Street and the Creole and Cajun cuisine excite your tastebuds. With all the history in this city, you can’t go past a walking tour to find out all the secrets. From the cocktail walking tour in the French Quarter that takes you through some of the oldest restaurants and bars that have been around since the 1800’s to the cemetery and voodoo tours, it’s hard to choose just one. You can’t miss taking a cooking class at the Deelightful Roux School of Cooking either. South of Naples is the stunning coastline of the Amalfi Coast with its dramatic cliffs, fishing villages and breathtaking views of the sparkling Mediterranean. I loved my stay in the iconic town of Positano with its pastelcoloured buildings and unique Italian charm. The beaches are amazing, I recommend heading to Fornillo Beach, it’s a bit smaller and quieter and just a 10 minute walk from the more crowded Spiaggia Grande. The food is amazing one of my favourites was Rada Restaurant and you must try the local wines! Take a boat to the stunning island of Capri, explore its winding streets and the blue grotto – its simply incredible! If you are feeling adventurous hike the Walk of the Gods, an incredible coastal walk that will reward you with the most jaw-dropping views.

Pure indulgent paradise – overwater bungalows, incredible beaches and some of the world’s most vibrant marine life – a stay at St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort is luxury at its best. It was very easy to simply relax in our exquisite overwater bungalow – the big question of the day – a swim in the pool or dip in the ocean? We did both! The snorkelling is incredible - consider taking a decent underwater camera to capture its beauty. We did manage to get up early and enjoy a sunrise yoga and meditation session, and with a burst of energy explored in a glass-bottom kayak.

There is nothing quite like watching an outdoor movie, but one in paradise is even better! Enjoy a barefoot luxury experience, relax on a beanbag, feet in the sand and enjoy a movie under the collection of stunning stars.

Hot Tip | Take a break away from having meals at your resort restaurant and spoil yourselves with a private dining experience. There are lots of options - an isolated sandbar, beachside under a gazebo, in your villa, on a candle lit jetty or even a sunrise champagne breakfast.

Cross the river to the West Bank and find yourself in the Valley of the Kings, where Sir Howard Carter spent years searching for the tomb of the Boy King, Tutankhamun. Many of the tombs are accessible for visitors to explore. This afternoon, sail downriver to Edfu, for the Temple of Horus: the most completely preserved Egyptian temple ever found. With its explorable chambers, massive 36-metre entrance and two huge statues of Horus, the experience is one of Egypt’s most spine tingling.

Cairo’s streets are chaotic. Navigating a route through dusty cars and donkey carts will leave your nerves in a jitter — but that’s all part of the city’s charm. The Pyramids of Giza of course, have always drawn visitors. In the 2nd Century BC, Philo of Byzantium compiled his list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — the first recorded travel guidebook — which included two sites from Egypt. The only one of these wonders still standing is The Great Pyramid of Giza. Twenty percent taller than Wellington’s tallest building, standing at the foot of The Great Pyramid is an experience you will never forget.

This morning fly to Luxor (approx. 1.5 hours).

If you thought Cairo was epic, Luxor will leave you speechless. Often described as the world’s greatest open-air museum, the seemingly never-ending terrain is freckled with temples. When the landscape is bathed in golden sunlight you’ll understand why the Pharaohs considered Luxor to be such an extraordinary place. After soaking up Luxor’s wonders, take respite from the Egyptian sun at the house of famed archaeologist Howard Carter. You’ll get a detailed insight into the life of the man who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

Today, set out on a four-day Nile cruise. Spend your morning at leisure, or sit back and enjoy a strong Egyptian coffee on the sun terrace. This afternoon, visit Karnak Temple. Worked and reworked by approximately 30 different Pharaohs over more than 1000 years, it must be one of the longest running building projects in history. Just one of the halls here is large enough to hold St Peter’s Basilica and the Notre Dame Cathedral.

DAY

4

Sail to Aswan, the riverside town home to Philae Temple which was dedicated to the goddess, Isis, and the stunning Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie penned Death on the Nile. After a tipple at the Old Cataract, venture to the ‘Unfinished Obelisk’ lying in Aswan’s granite quarries. An obelisk is a narrow stone pillar set up as a landmark (think Washington Monument) and this one is more than 3500 years old. Never finished, and therefore never hoisted, Aswan’s great monument lies like a sleeping giant in the ground. Later, why not sail in a traditional felucca (sail boat) around the lush islands of Aswan and view the Aga Khan Mausoleum. Get off to explore Aswan’s markets or stop for a cool drink on the banks of the Nile.

ABU SIMBEL.

DAY

9

Swap your ship for a plane and fly to Abu Simbel in just over one hour. The colossal Temples of Abu Simbel are the most spectacular in Egypt, and so immaculately preserved, it feels like a film set. When the Aswan High Dam was constructed in the early 1960s, the huge lake it created would have drowned the temple, so they dismantled it and moved it above the new waterline, where it was reassembled piece by piece. Whether you’re marvelled by this feat of engineering, or that of the Egyptians centuries earlier, Abu Simbel will leave you in awe.

Busting the myths we hear about travel consultants. Where nearly anything can be arranged with a few clicks online and the ability to book direct, this has led some to wonder whether travel consultants are relics of a bygone era. At House of Travel, this couldn’t be further from the truth. From our recent survey of over 4,000 participants (Nov 23) 33% of respondees, who do not traditionally use a travel consultant, have said that they are keen to book their next holiday with a travel consultant (50% of these were Gen Z & Millennials). Key reason being that they are seeking a stress-free holiday planning experience and recognise the valuable expertise and insights a travel consultant provides. With our treasure trove of knowledge, over 37 years of experience and 24/7 support, here’s how a House of Travel consultant can add value, expertise, experience and great Kiwi service to your holiday planning.

MY TH 1

MY TH 2

A travel consultant will cost me more than booking direct or online.

Travel consultants just book flights and hotels.

At House of Travel, it’s the exact opposite! We have industry resources and strong, long-standing relationships with reputable and trusted travel suppliers that mean we get you the best deals and rates possible. “One customer always brings his laptop to compare the rates he finds with what I can get. Last time, it was a month-long trip and we bettered the price on the whole itinerary — and added some new ideas he hadn’t thought of!” says House of Travel Howick’s Alison Kearney.

A holiday is more than just flights and hotels – it’s creating the entire experience that makes your holiday truly special. A travel consultant co-ordinates all parts of your holiday – booking flights, accommodation, tours, cruises, providing insurance and arranging holiday money! Our passionate and experienced travel consultants are travellers too and it’s this firsthand up-to-date knowledge that really makes the difference. “From sharing tips like the name of a great tailor in Hoi An, the best gelato in Florence, to booking the best room in a hotel is what makes a good holiday, a great one.” says Lisa Crawford at House of Travel Lower Hutt.

Part of the fun of planning a holiday is looking at the incredible options available, but it can also get a bit overwhelming. With the increase of AI technology and information, it can be hard to navigate the validity of numerous websites. Whilst DIY bookings can be done, the list is endless of the many pitfalls that can come with booking a holiday yourself, including dealing with any unforeseen disruptions whilst you are away. Our job is answering questions you didn’t know you needed to ask.

And the more you can pre-book before you go, saves you time and money – you won’t need to worry about your holiday budget getting out of control.

“Stephanie was very welcoming and friendly, knows her stuff and was generally interested about myself, my family, our travel experiences and our next planned trip. Stephanie made appropriate and great suggestions and I felt very reassured as she stayed in contact to make sure everything was going well and made herself available at any time to sort out any concerns I had.”

Sometimes suppliers may contact you directly with promotional offers for future travel. Rest assured these offers are also available at the same cost when booking with House of Travel. “Leonie found what I was looking for quickly and provided an even better deal than I had been given. Everything was sorted in a couple of days along with some handy tips.” Jenny, customer of House of Travel Blenheim

“Carol went the extra mile suggesting tours and a seven-day cruise around Croatia, which we would probably would not have done. It was adding a taste of luxury and new experiences in the mix of what we planned ourselves. The accommodation sourced in Italy, France and Portugal were amazing. We can’t thank Carol enough for all her input and knowledge to make our holiday amazing.” Rosemary, customer of House of Travel Morrinsville

Travels consultants will encourage me to buy products where they make more commission.

A travel consultant won’t work with my research.

Nobody wants to be hit with sales pitches! We believe a great holiday means an incredible experience at a good value. That means our suggestions should enhance your experience and are never about boosting a commission. Our role as a travel consultant is to provide completely independent advice using our knowledge and experience to access an entire range of suppliers and products available in the market and our recommendation of a supplier is based solely on their suitability for meeting your individual holiday needs. “In our business, word of mouth is critical,” says House of Travel High Street Lanes’ Sarah Crowe. “That’s why we follow up with every customer when they get home. We never make recommendations for our own benefit. We genuinely recommend the best thing for our customer. Last week I made a reservation at a local hotspot for a customer travelling to Singapore. I earned no commission doing this, but I know she’s going to love this experience. We are all about going the extra mile to create incredible holiday experiences.”

Actually, we encourage your research, which we can combine with our expertise to create the best holiday for you. “I really like to chat about what my customers have found. It helps me create their perfect holiday,” says House of Travel Richmond’s Amanda Radovanovich. “Recently a customer asked me to book flights to Europe. They reluctantly told me they’d already organised an itinerary and hotels. Talking through their itinerary enabled us to adjust it so they saved on airport taxes, replaced flights with rail to avoid time in airports and I managed to save them just over $1000. Some of the changes I suggested ended up being the highlights of their trip.”

JANUARY

FEBRUARY

Australian Open

Mona Foma, Tasmania

14-28 Jan 24

15-25 Feb & 29 Feb-03 Mar 24

January is the perfect time to visit Melbourne. The annual tennis tournament pulls in all the big players, while the city — in full summer swing — is buzzing with excitement.

This art and music festival is arguably the biggest event of the Tasmania social calendar, running over three weekends. With Queens of the Stone Age headlining, this is one not to be missed.

J U LY

Illuminate Adelaide 01-31 Jul 24

Bringing together the best and boldest in art, music, technology and invention from Australia & around the world, Adelaide’s streetscapes and iconic locations are turned into a beacon of light.

SY D N E Y ’ S S PA R K L I N G H A R B O U R , in all its iconic glory, is lusted-over by the world’s most avid travellers, all hankering to tick this beauty off their bucket list. And yet for Kiwis, it’s just a three-hour flight from Auckland. The city so many yearn to visit is on our doorstep, and every year we have the opportunity to experience Sydney in her finest light. Introducing West Side Story, the muchloved Broadway export, which come March 2024, will explode onto the Sydney Harbour in the form of Handa Opera. The very epitome of an extravaganza, Handa is a sensory overload that will take both your ears and eyes on a journey of infectious song and electric choreography. As the sun sets, spectators descend on Mrs Macquaries Point, at the tip of the Royal Botanic Gardens and settle in for a modernday Romeo and Juliet love story — with the added punch of New York sass. The stage will float above the Sydney Harbour, with music and light projecting across the water.

AUGUST

MARCH

Grease the Musical, Sydney 24 Mar-14 Apr 24

One of the world’s most iconic and loved musicals, nothing beats the feeling you get going back to Rydell High.

APRIL

Byron Bay Bluesfest 28 Mar-02 Apr 24

Next year marks the festival’s 30th birthday. Celebrate with 100,000 other music-fiends for five days of international (and Aussie-grown) blues’ performances. It’s suitable for families so bring the gang.

SEPTEMBER

Melbourne International Film Festival

Alice Springs Desert Festival

08-25 Aug 24

21 Sep-01 Oct 24

Visit Melbourne and combine all the city’s cultural merits with its annual film festival. Falling over three weeks, dine at award-winning restaurants and then catch a movie.

The Outback is quite the experience, more so when the desert festival is in full swing. A rare opportunity to observe traditional Aboriginal communities alongside modern music and dance.

It is quite possibly the only time of year when the Opera House and bridge take a backseat, while still making the perfect backdrop to this very special event. Make it a night to remember by starting with dinner and drinks at Sydney’s latest dazzler, Barangaroo. Having opened in the summer of 2018, it’s just four minutes from Wynyard Station and impresses with dining venues and cocktail bars. Or for those commuting from afar, rev up the glam-factor and arrive by water taxi. Then get ready for an all-singing, all-dancing spectacle in the autumnal air, culminating in a firework display - because no one does a skyline finale better than Sydney. Taking centre-stage between 22 March and 21 April 2024 and with multiple shows throughout the month, don’t miss your chance to see one of the world’s most iconic stage shows in one of the world’s most iconic cities. West Side Story will catapult your Sydney experience from a quick hop across the Tasman to a sensational good time.

CHEAT SHEET | RIVER CRUISE 101

Is river cruising right for me? Twelve very good reasons to get on-board. 1 | Holidays without hassle. No need to drive, navigate a map, cook, clean or even make your own bed, your days are your own, to do as much or as little as you like.

2 | Unpack only once. Avoid constant unpacking and repacking. The only time you’ll be seeing your suitcase is the morning you board and the day you depart.

3 | The scenery always changes. The views change daily from your stateroom, the restaurant, the lounge, the deck…. Better yet, you’ll go to bed in one town or city and wake up in a brand-new one.

5 | Food, glorious food. Fresh Italian coffee with breakfast? Of course. There’s also a continental buffet and a team of chefs to whip up your eggs. Lunch is light (great if you’ve just gobbled a framboise tart from the patisserie) and often alfresco for sun-soaked refreshment. Dinners, albeit smart-casual, are elegant and a la carte. 6 | You see an awful lot. Excursions every day; the likelihood of a new town or city every morning; no heavy road traffic. You see a huge amount in a short timeframe. Uncover region upon region of fascinating history, while tasting gourmet food and observing the local way of life.

4 | Suites are comfy. As roomy as

a hotel room, the space is ample for two. The bathrooms are generously sized; enough to swing a cat and a couple of kittens too. Most River Ships have balconies or wall-to-wall panoramic windows; you’ll awaken to natural light and the river gliding past the foot of your bed.

7 | No responsibilities. Ditch the car and don’t worry about Google Maps. Travel from A to B with ease and in comfort. Navigation is no longer your concern, but the captain’s. 8 | Small ships, big camaraderie. Much more petite than their ocean-cruising big sisters, passenger numbers are smaller on a river cruise. The on-board ambience feels like a community of like-minded globe-trotters.

9 | Sociable & refined. With guest numbers ranging between 130 and 170 there’s no hiding amidst a sea of faces. Dining is a particularly sociable affair and guests are encouraged to sit at a different table each evening.

10 | Everything is done for you. Unlike a self-organised holiday, no time’s wasted tracking down taxis, negotiating fares, or organising transfers. It’s already done. Feeling parched after a day of sightseeing? There will be iced drinks and cold towels on your return. In dire need of a cup of tea? Someone’s already squeezing your Dilmah.

Ample free-time. Excursions are usually morning or afternoon, with a return to the ship for lunch, but there’s no pressure to join . Take some time to relax on the ship’s deck, visit the spa or maybe opt for a bike ride along the river, many river companies now offer these complimentary. Sit and catch a few rays, or book yourself an appointment at the salon — a new do for dinner is always nice.

PAS SAU, G E R M A N Y

11 |

12 | Entertainment is low key. There are no jazz hands here. River cruise entertainment usually includes on-board lectures (destination history, WWII experts), cultural shows, nightly movies and the relaxing medley of a pianist.

Ski the Canadian Rockies. Banff National Park is home to three resorts: Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay, collectively known as SkiBig3. With one of the longest ski seasons in North America, there’s a slice of white for every snow-lover.

TIP SHEET G ET T IN G T H ERE. Fly to Vancouver and connect with a domestic flight to Calgary.

Great family holidays are made in Banff and Lake Louise. It’s all about getting cosy and making the most of the snow. Bundle the kids in a warm sleigh and go dog sledding through the forest with Banff’s Warner Stables — hot chocolate and marshmallows included — or glide across a frozen Lake Louise. One of the best value activities is Banff Gondola, while those eight years and over can give snowshoeing a shot. Newbies will excel at Sunny Side because it’s as beginner-friendly as it sounds, with wellgroomed snow and a wide terrain for practicing turns. Mt Norquay’s Cascade Chair is also favoured by families finding their ski feet. An easy yet varied landscape exists at Rock Isle Road in Sunshine Village while more confident beginners should try Meadow Park. There’s even a few trees to test your skills. Ready for a green run? The Lake Louise Ski Resort offers the perfect powder to boost your confidence.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could ask a die-hard ski expert where to go and what to expect? The inside scoop, so-to-speak. Well now you can. SkiBig3 now has ‘Guided Adventures’. WALKS of the WORLD GREAT WALKS | WALKS OF DISCOVERY

BIG TOE WAS BORN FOR ADVENTURE – AND HIS FOUR COMRADES TOO! FOLLOW YOUR FEET FOR SCENIC AMBLINGS AND LIFE-CHANGING RAMBLINGS, IT’S TIME FOR YOUR BEST JOURNEY YET.

MT KILIMANJARO - Tanzania

SAPA HILL TRIBE TREK - Vietnam

Coloured flags mark the summit, but it’s your weary legs and raspy breath that mark the head-spinning altitude. As Africa’s highest mountain and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro kisses the roof of the world. You can trek this beast over the course of one week and you’ll need a good level of fitness and an unwavering determination to succeed. The terrain is steep with pathways weaving between boulders and overhangs; the route, in parts, scaled by slopes of shale. Your efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of craters, ice-fields and distant Kenyan plains. For altitude sickness, drink steaming ginger tea, a welcome sight before a pre-dawn tramp, when frozen volcanic dusk makes the mountain easier to climb. And then at 19,340ft you arrive at Uhuru Peak – Kilimanjaro’s highest point. You’ve made it. The feeling is beyond euphoric.

With dream scenery plucked straight from a fantasy, the deep terraces that tumble down Sapa’s lush hillside are neatly packed with rice paddies and an obligatory mystical fog. Having arrived on an eight-hour train from Hanoi, this is where hikers embark on one of Sapa’s many hilltribe treks. For the adventurer who endeavours to combine hiking with culture, the relatively easy five-day itinerary includes one night in Sapa and one night with a local tribe family. By day you’ll traverse gravel tracks and muddy trails, flanked on all sides by lush highland, grazing buffalo and many of Vietnam’s 53 minority groups that inhabit the landscape. You’ll immerse yourself in traditional village life, learning about Vietnam’s many diverse cultures and participating in their daily rituals. It’s a full two-days of rolling hills and trickling streams, walking beneath humid clouds and a billowing mist, before you return, by train, to Hanoi.

MACHU PICCHU - Peru

PATHWAYS OF THE AMALFI COAST - Italy

Entering the Inca sun gate at the very moment sun emerges from behind the Andes is not only spine-tingling, it also makes the 4-day hard slog undoubtedly worth it. A land that time forgot, the 550-year old citadel surrenders to a warm orange glow. You’ll have spent the past 43km in relative pain, your thigh muscles screaming as you traverse misty mountains, humid forests and craggy pathways, but you’ll also have spent it amidst sacred Incan history, camping nightly and rising before the clouds clear. A physically exerting trek, this is a tough terrain but the rewards are monumental. Each year there are a restricted number of visas so book in advance and acclimatise to Machu Picchu’s grueling 14,000 feet altitude by spending an additional few days in Cuzco – chewing on Coca leaves to ease any altitude sickness.

Sure, you can explore the Amalfi coastline by Ferrari or Vespa, but wheels don’t build your buns into steel. A self-guided Amalfi walking tour will do that. For the physically fit you’ll walk up to five hours per day, in the blistering Italian sun, exploring 40km of dramatic coastline that’ll take you through granite cliffs and twisting paths; plunging hillside and zig-zagging mountain steps. Look out for basking lizards, discrete shrines and valley hidden villages, as well as time-worn convents and tiny pebbled beaches with pontoons. From Limoncello-starts in Amalfi, you’ll pass shacks selling refreshments and trucks creaking under a mountain of melons, which after navigating steep hillside and sheer rocky drops, you’ll gladly receive.

WHITE CHRISTMAS | BEST CHRISTMAS EVER

I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas… A Christmas like no other... with a little extra magic sprinkled on top E XPLO R E S A NTA’ S H O M E L A N D I N F I N L A N D’ S L A PL A N D

Reindeers, huskies, tobogganing, lots of snowy activities - ice fishing, snow hockey and riding mini skidoos, elves around every corner, spectacular shows and venturing deep into the forest to visit Santa’s secret hideaway for an unforgettable private visit at his workshop. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas … This is Christmas in Santa’s homeland, Lapland. The lead-up to Christmas is the most popular time to visit Lapland - you will need to book early (at least a year in advance), this also includes pre-booking your activities. Alternatively, if you’d like a little more flexibility and pay slightly lower prices, you can still enjoy your Lapland ‘Christmas’ in late November/early December, instead of travelling at Christmas itself.

Reindeers. There is nothing quite like seeing the real life Dasher, Prancer, Comet, Blitzen and friends. Tobogganing. Go down the longest toboggan slope in Finland! There are quite a few twists and turns but awesome fun. You catch the chairlift up again for another run… and another… and another! Snow Day – A day of fun! Snow-hockey, skidoo rides, ice golf, ice fishing, making snow angels, more tobogganing and then warm up with pancakes and hot berry juice (think warm ribena) listening to stories in a Kota (teepee tent).

There is no better place to celebrate Christmas than in the Big Apple! C H R I S TM AS I N N E W YO R K

New York is just one of those cities - iconic, exciting, and simply mesmerising. The city that never sleeps is a great place to visit any time of the year, but no more so than at the magical time of Christmas. Celebrating Christmas in New York (and while you’re there you might as well stay for New Year’s Eve!) is pure bucket list material. Seeing 5th Avenue all dressed up for the holiday season, taking in the Rockettes Christmas Show, sampling roasted chestnuts from a street vendor, ice staking and Times Square - its big, bright and unforgettable. Head to the Rockefeller Center to see the towering Christmas tree with Swarovski Star and over 30,000 glittering lights. All are must-dos at this special time of the year.

Carriage rides through Central Park. A particular seasonal favourite not to be missed. Get in the festive spirit and rug up with a warm blanket and hot chocolate and be wowed by the enchantment of twinkling fairy lights in the trees above you. Angel voices. Going to the Bronx area and visiting the Museum of Black America. Head into a church and listen to the angelic voices of the gospel choir – amazing. Experience an authentic New York Diner. There’s nothing more New York than an American diner and you can’t help but love the authentic Big Apple buzz of Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop.

Last year Beverley Mitchell from House of Travel Ponsonby enjoyed a romantic river cruise visiting European Christmas markets. Beverley explains why a winter Christmas is so special. Why is a river cruise a great way to see Europe’s Christmas markets? A / Christmas time in the cities and towns of Europe is truly enchanting, and a river cruise is a fantastic way of experiencing the festive lights, decorations and the incredible stalls, while leisurely sailing down the river system in five-star luxury. Where did you go? A / Our magical European Christmas Markets included three nights in beautiful Prague and a seven-night river cruise from Nuremburg to Budapest, stopping along the way in Regensburg, Passau, an excursion to Salzburg, Melk, the amazing Wachau Valley, and ‘The City of Music,’ Vienna. What are the advantages of cruising? A / One of the biggest benefits of river cruising is always the close proximity that the ship berths to the centre of the places you stop, meaning you can easily stroll into the historic areas, and it’s an even bigger benefit at Christmas time when the markets are in full swing. Where are the Christmas markets located? A / Every city and town we stopped at along the way featured beautiful and very vibrant Christmas markets, always located in the main squares or most historical areas, and all featuring

countless traditional wooden huts selling a huge range of Christmas goodies such as handmade gifts and crafts, amazing food, and very tasty mulled wine. Is it festive on-board? A / Christmas on-board a river cruise will make you believe in holiday magic all over again. We were sailing aboard a luxurious ship and it was beautifully decorated. From the baubles to the European villages with fairytale houses and a friendly, festive charm, it was all very beguiling. What will I see and taste? A / Everyone onboard commented on the huge variety of items on sale at the markets, and the biggest surprise for everyone was the incredible range of food on offer as well: chocolates, pastries, spicy gingerbread, sweet roasted almonds, specialty sausages, and apfelstudels – highly recommend! What’s your fondest memory? A / Happy locals and tourists enjoying the sweet sound of carols, the vibrancy of the markets, the giant Christmas trees, and the specialty food (did I mention the mulled wine!?) If you love a Christmas atmosphere, the smell of a Christmas tree and the chorus of carol singers, then you’ll love cruising at Christmas.

The Great Outdoors! Go snow shoeing, wildlife spotting and much more.
