FRANCE & ITALY Whether you want to climb the Eiffel Tower or the Leaning Tower, these are a couple of dreamy countries bursting with cultural, historical and natural treasures. They have 90 UNESCO World Heritage-sites between them, from prehistoric decorated caves to fortified cities. They share the snowy French and Italian Alps, perfect for lovers of winter sports, and the Mediterranean coast along the glamorous South of France, Cote d’Azur, past colourful fishing villages piling down the cliffs of the Cinque Terre, breath-taking Amalfi Coast and the stylish island of Capri.

They have cool microstates – Monaco, Andorra, Vatican and San Marino – small independent states dating back to the first millennium, and famous iconic cities full of history, showcased in magical architecture, ruins and cathedrals. Both countries have excellent train systems that deliver you to the heart of the main towns. Once you’ve feasted on the museums, art, shopping, it’s time to experience leisurely living in the countryside. Stay in a villa, or a castle, wander cobbled streets and rejoice at the gastronomic delights at every turn.

There’s nothing quite as delicious as a real French croissant or fresh baguette. Dine at any auberge and a basket of sliced ‘pain’ will be endlessly replenished at your table. When in Italy, it’s all about rustic indulgence; little family-run restaurants where non-flashy décor is an indication that the food is not only sublime, but also authentic. Forget your carb woes and embrace pasta like an Italian; spaghetti is a daily pleasure you really can’t deny yourself.

1 / ART LOVERS UNITE There’s the Louvre but there’s also Paris’ Musee D’Orsay. As well as the huge collection of artwork, the former Gare d’Orsay railway station is a stunning piece of art nouveau in itself. For convenience, purchase a ‘Skip the Line’ pass; it costs a little extra but you’ll be able to jump the queue, and if you’re in Paris on the first Sunday of the month, entry is free.

In Italy, Florence can’t be outdone for its endless selection of art galleries, such as the Uffizi and Accademia. While in Rome, the works of Michelangelo are almost inescapable.

For less commercialised arty hangouts, Mougins in the French Riviera is where Picasso spent the last 12 years of his life. It’s also where he famously painted on the walls of his hotel room, much to the fury of its owner. In Arles follow the scenes Van Gogh painted or in Aixen-Provence walk in the footsteps of Cezanne.

2 / MARVEL AT HISTORIC ICONS When the sun shines on the Château Chenonceau it’s an enchanting spectacle of fairytale turrets and perfectly manicured flowerbeds. From the Loire Valley to southern France, a magic ambience also exists at Pont du Gard. This ancient Roman aqueduct is illuminated at night with dramatic effect. Historic relics can be sought throughout Europe, but nothing quite compares to Pompeii. From dusty roads to intricate tiles still adorning dilapidated walls, you’ll be overwhelmed by pockets of history.

5 / BECOME A WINE CONNOISSEUR Regardless of whether your palette is accustomed to a sharp Chablis or a Pinot Noir, the vineyards that blanket France and Italy are a spectacle in themselves. In France’s countryside you’ll find hearty reds in Bordeaux and the charming town of St Émilion, whereas lovers of a lighter red will enjoy Beaujolais; its subtle yet refreshing characteristics perfectly complement a long lazy lunch. Chianti is found in Italy’s much loved Tuscany region and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is another famed red from the region. And then there’s Champagne, which somehow tastes even more exquisite when served against a beautiful Champagne backdrop.

4 / BE YOUR OWN SKIPPER Is there anything better than commandeering your own boat, adopting the role of captain and taking to the water with no fixed itinerary? In a country connected by canals, a great way to discover France is from the unique perspective of its serene waterways. Ideal for couples, families and groups of friends, acquire a vessel with a flying bridge (external navigational controls) so you can be the skipper as well as part of the social experience. If France has canals, then Italy has Venice; replete with a romantic assortment of palaces, squares, churches and bridges.

6 / KIWI CONNECTION You'll receive a warm welcome everywhere in France, but nowhere more so than Le Quesnoy. A small commune in the north, Germans held this township captive for the majority of WWI. That was until the New Zealand division seized it back; an act the residents (both past and present) have never forgotten. You'll find streets named after New Zealand places and even a primary school bearing the name of a Kiwi soldier. Over one hundred years after Le Quesnoy's freeing, you won't find a more poignant place to commemorate the French NZ connection. In Italy, a small city called Cassino is where NZ soldiers fought for the liberation of its historic hilltop abbey, Monte Cassino in WWII. Today the monastery stands fully re-built, but the atmosphere attests to a traumatic past.

PARIS What other city can conjure up romance, elegance and chic sophistication like Paris? This is a city to savour – whether from high among the lattice work of the Eiffel Tower or from a pavement café with a glass of Bordeaux in hand. The treasures of the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe and the elegant Champs Elysées – all are essential Paris. But be prepared to detour – watch a game of boules in the Jardin de Luxembourg or dither between a rich, custardy millefeuille and a flaky pain au chocolat at a nearby pâtisserie.

Watch artists at work near the Sacré-Coeur Basilica and marvel at the Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d’Orsay. Peoplewatch in a side walk café and when the sun sets, fall in love with Paris all over again.

Paris Museum Pass – A sightseer’s best friend, allowing unlimited entry to over 60 museums and monuments in and around Paris. Check out the crazy traffic from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, have Mona Lisa’s eyes follow you at the Louvre and imagine times gone by at Château de Fontainebleau.

Canal St Martin – With its old iron footbridge, Canal St Martin was made famous in the movie Amelie, it's lined with cafés and restaurants and is a great place to hang out.

Père-Lachaise Cemetery – Said to be the world’s most visited graveyard, some of the most frequented graves are those of Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Chopin and Oscar Wilde. Get a free map on the way in at the conservation office just inside the main entrance off Boulevard de Menilmontant.

Saint Chapelle – Not far from the Notre Dame, Saint Chapelle is a spectacular cathedral with the most amazing stained glass windows.

Three Prices to Pay in France – At a café stand at the bar like a local (the most economical). Sit down inside the café and the price goes up, and if you sit outside on the footpath the cost is even higher, but it's worth it for the people watching.

Walk! - Paris has different neighbourhoods that are their own little villages, explore them by foot, you never know what goodies you’ll find. Or do a guided walking tour focused on your interest; food, history, art, shopping, wine, the choice is yours.

Shopping – The birthplace of haute couture, and Coco Channel, Paris has the largest Louis Vuitton in the world, great boutiques in Le Marais, Saint-German-desPrès, and Montmartre, and fantastic department stores such as Galleries Lafayette.

FRENCH RIVIERA For all the glitz and glamour, the French Riviera’s real pleasures are far simpler. Days start with a café au lait in a café-lined street, people watching and picking away at a warm croissant. Take to the foothills for snaking clifftop roads favoured by those with high-powered sports cars, or see and be seen at the beach – Nice, St-Tropez or Cannes; or explore the glamorous, independent microstate of Monaco – the seduction of the Mediterranean is rife. Lunch in a country auberge or shop the biggest names in France; from Chanel to YSL. Come nightfall, dine on the region’s finest produce while sipping wine and soaking up the ambience.

Day 1: Aix-en-Provence Old town of Aix is home to Cézanne, the tree-lined Cours Mirabeau and a farmers market where you can enjoy a coffee and savour the ambience.

Rocamadour – AOC Cheese Rocamadour is a ‘must’ taste – it’s made locally into small white rounds and is creamy and delicious.

Sarlat-la-Canéda – Take a walk in the early morning when the sunshine often catches the light on the gorgeous yellow sandstone buildings that date back to renaissance and medieval times. They are well restored and very beautiful.

La Roque-Gageac – Voted one of the prettiest villages in all of France, this is another ‘must-see’. It is a picture postcard with its white and ochre houses, nestled between the cliffside and the Dordogne River.

Souillac Jazz Festival – If visiting in July, this town comes alive with a weeklong jazz festival. It’s been held now for over 30 years and artists flock to the bars, cafés and squares of the town and surrounding villages.

Castelnaudary – Stop here en route to Carcassonne. On Monday’s they have market day which is packed with local produce including fresh veges, breads and patisseries, charcuterie and preserves. Aim to get there early though, before it is too hot to wander around.

Day 5: St-Malo – Angers – Tours (328km) Wander through the lively university town of Angers. It’s the gateway to the Loire Valley with a pedestrianised old town and great places to eat.

Day 6: Loire Valley Discover the charm and beauty of the château region. Chenonceau spans the water’s flow, while Azay-le-Rideau sits like a tiny jewel in the centre of its own moat.

Passion seeps into all aspects of life in Italy – you can hear it in the opera, taste it in lovingly

prepared pasta, and see it in action as the Italians promenade across their piazzas, talking with their hands. Only the most hard-hearted of visitors can fail to be caught up in the Italian love of life.

In its capital Rome and its fashion and business powerhouse Milan, life is lived at a fast pace and often via a host of speeding Vespas. ROME An espresso shot at breakfast before treading the nearly 2000-year-old steps in the Colosseum, a slice of gourmet pizza served among jostling, exquisitely dressed Romans, a gelato in delectable Piazza Navona, ravioli for dinner near the Spanish Steps: the Romans love to eat and drink, so when in Rome…

There is so much history to discover in Rome, and in the world’s tiniest state that lies within it: the Vatican City. Follow in the ghostly sandalled footsteps of a Roman senator through the Forum or tread the marble floors in the wake of the Popes in St Peter’s Basilica. A few steps off the tourist trail and you’ll find another side of Rome: a black-clad Italian ‘mamma’ hanging out the washing, and children running home with the daily fresh bread.

Trastevere – A maze of alleyways, terracotta coloured buildings, restaurants and cafés. It is where the Romans go for an evening out and is great fun.

The Pantheon – A must-see between Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain. Believed to be the oldest building in Rome dating back to 27BC, the only light into the church is from the opening in the ceiling dome.

St Peter’s Basilica – Make the climb to the top as the views it offers of Rome and the Piazza San Pietro are breath-taking.

Papal Audience – There are generally thousands of people keen to see the Pope and we therefore recommend booking the Papal Audience Tour. This will ensure you arrive at St Peter’s Square in plenty of time for the Pope’s blessing, avoid queues and get a good position.

Catacombs – The underground burial site of early Christians dating back to the second century, you will see the bones of people buried there.

Vatican Museums – If you don’t attend the Papal audience on a Wednesday morning, this is a great time to visit the Vatican Museums, as there'll be less crowds.

Ferrari – For those car enthusiasts – visit the Ferrari Shop on Via Tomacelli where you can buy a key ring for about EUR100 or a baby blanket for EUR240!

Villa Borghese – When you feel like taking a break from the monuments and museums, this vast park overlooking the city has relaxing walks around the lake. It's a great spot to take a picnic, lie on the grass and enjoy the sunset over Rome.

Explore markets – Rome proudly upholds the daily and weekly market tradition. Some of our favourites are the daily produce market in Campo de’ Fiori and the enclosed market in Testaccio neighbourhood which has some of the city’s best street food.

Newcomers are usually open-mouthed as they are swept along the Grand Canal for the first time, past crumbling palaces, bobbing gondolas and domed churches.

After you’ve seen the main sights, lose yourself along the paths that cling to the canal-sides or take a water taxi to one of the many islands. For a truly authentic Venetian meal, opt for a superb seafood risotto in one of the tiny bacari (or pubs) frequented by the locals.

Michelangelo’s David, Botticelli’s Venus and Giotto’s Madonnas: you’ll want to feast your eyes on all of them. Find a perch among the sculptures in the 14th century Loggia della Signoria near the Uffizi Gallery and enjoy the buskers, or window-shop along the 13th century Ponte Vecchio, the bridge across the Arno River that is lined with glittering jewellery shops. People-watch outside the Duomo, Florence’s extraordinary pink, white and green marble cathedral.

The Duomo – Finished around 1367, the cathedral stands proudly above the surrounding buildings. Take a tour of the Baptistry secret passages.

Giotto’s Bell Tower – Attached to the Duomo. The 400 narrow steps to the top can be hard work but the view over Florence from the top is superb.

Piazzale Michelangelo – About a 20 minute walk from the Duomo (or a short bus ride) this is half piazza and half parking lot BUT it is a great spot for fantastic views over Florence and the Arno Valley.

Ponte Vecchio – The only bridge in Florence to have been spared by German bombs in WWII. Wander across to see stores of jewellery, art and souvenirs.

Palazzo Vecchio and Arnolfo Tower – Walk around the one-time fortress, Palazzo Vecchio. Admire the Hall of The Five Hundred and soak up magical sunset city views from the battlements and Arnolfo Tower.

Leaning Tower of Pisa – About an hour’s drive out of Florence through the picturesque Tuscan countryside, you arrive in Pisa. Explore the surrounding remarkable buildings and have your photo taken holding up the tower.

Siena, San Gimignano and Greve – See some of the nearby countryside and the rolling hills of Chianti on a day tour to a hilltop town.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO SEE AND DO

CINQUE TERRE Decades ago the five villages that comprise the Cinque Terre had no road access. Clinging to cliffs overlooking the azure Mediterranean, their houses were an artist’s palette of terracottas and creams. Then the first tourists arrived and now the walking tracks that connect the five are almost always thronged with visitors, though the villages retain their postcard-perfect charm.

It is possible to walk between the northernmost village of Monterosso and Riomaggiore in the south in one day, but it’s far better to take your time, stay in one village for a few days and explore the villages on foot. If you don’t fancy the walk, there are roads now (nervous drivers beware!) or more preferably you can ride the local train. For an entirely different view, take to the sea on the ferry.

Il Gigante – Carved into the cliffs in Monterosso is the 14 metre high statue of Neptune holding the waves at bay. Due to wartime bombing and rough seas he lost his arms, trident and the giant seashell he held.

Riomaggiore Murals – These striking murals paint a picture of life in the Cinque Terre and are situated outside the train station. The murals are to glorify the unknown workers who constructed all of the dry stone walls and terracing that is so distinctive to the area.

Walking the Coastal Path – This links the villages, but be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water as it is not sold along the route. Get an early start to avoid the heat and the crowds and ensure you have your Cinque Terre card.

Try the Best Basil Pesto – This is the home of pesto and it’s generously served in restaurants with two different types of pasta that are local to the area; trofie – short dense twists, or trenette – long flat with a ruffle on the edges.

Rest at one of the Spectacular Terraced Vineyards – Check out the local wine and also the delicious limoncello, enjoy an accompanying antipasto platter while soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the view.

Sip a Sciacchetra – A rare sweet white wine unique to the Cinque Terre. It’s delicious especially with creamy gorgonzola cheese.

Taste the Local Anchovies – These are caught along the coast, then salted and barrelled in the bay by the woman of the Cinque Terre.

Swimming at the Cinque Terre – The coastline is full of small bays and the clear Ligurian Sea. Manarola you can sunbathe on the rocks then dive off into the deep waters; Vernazza has a small sandy beach good for kids, or jump off the rocks at the end of the harbour; Monterosso has a sandy, pebbly beach great for families.

Visit Portofino for the Day – Take the train to Santa Margherita, then the local bus from directly outside the station.

A Taste of Cinque Terre 4 days/3 nights Day 1: La Spezia – Riomaggiore or Monterosso (17km) Transfer from La Spezia to Riomaggiore or Monterosso by private vehicle and spend the rest of the day exploring, hike up to the top of town for panoramic views along the coast and glistening sea-views through the lemon trees.

Day 2: Cinque Terre Use your Cinque Terre Card to explore this beautiful area at your own pace. With vineyards, olive groves and delightful houses, each of the villages exudes its own authentic charm. Train to Corniglia, the smallest least touristy village high up on the cliff, a steep descent to the water.

Next stop’s Manarola, the most iconic photo is of the colourful houses cascading down the rock to the little harbour. You can ferry back from here or catch the train.

Day 3: Cinque Terre Today train to the northmost village of Monterosso. Fuel up with a gelato on the sandy beach before trekking to Vernazza. There is a strenuous climb at the start but you’ll be rewarded with the most stunning views walking along the cliff path towards Vernazza. This is the most picturesque village with a small sandy beach but can get very overcrowded in summer.

Getting there & around The Cinque Terre Card is compulsory and gives you access to the Park area. Prices start from EUR7.50 as a 1, 2, 3 day pass and are available locally from the National Park offices situated outside the train stations of any of the five villages.

The train is the best way to get to the Cinque Terre from either La Spezia or Levanto and for an additional EUR8 per person you get unlimited 2nd class train travel and access to the five villages in between.

Cars are not allowed beyond the village entrances. You can either leave it in La Spezia or Levanto or park at the top of the villages. These parks are small, expensive and often full in summer.

A lovely way to arrive is by ferry from La Spezia or Levanto if you’re visiting March to October, but these can be suspended in rough weather and are an additional cost to the Cinque Terre Card.

When to go & where to stay

Day 4: Riomaggiore or Monterosso – La Spezia (17km) The tour ends after breakfast with a private transfer to La Spezia.

Don’t underestimate the heat in summer and the crowds on weekends.

The best time to visit is April to October when there are local boats linking many of the villages and providing a alternative to experience this coastal region. We suggest walking one way and boating back. June and August tend to be very touristy so try going in spring or autumn for less crowds. Winter can become quite cold and some facilities are closed.

If the trails get too wet they are closed for safety reasons. Currently the trails between Corniglia and Riomaggiore are closed.

MILAN High among the spires of Milan’s 500-year-old cathedral is a great spot to view Italy’s dynamic financial hub, as the cathedral, in its café-lined piazza lies at the heart of Milan. Close by is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the designer nirvana lies in the aptly named Quadrilatero (Golden Quadrilateral) where Prada, Valentino, Gucci and more await.

Gaze at Leonardo’s Last Supper and be dazzled at La Scala, one of the world’s greatest opera houses.

Milan also offers access to Verona, with its Roman arena and romantic associations to Romeo and Juliet.

The Terraces of the Cathedral – The Terraces on the roof of the cathedral have a surface of 8,000m2 which is covered by marble. Climb the 201 steps to the top for a breath-taking view of the city; with good weather you can even see the Italian and Swiss Alps. Admire magnificent arches, the 135 pinnacles of the cathedral, the numerous statues and breathe in the peaceful atmosphere over this constantly active city.

Navigli District – There is a system of canals through Milan and the oldest one, Naviglio Grande, is bustling with canal-side cafés, old-fashioned gelaterie (ice-cream shops), boutiques, artists of Milan, restaurants and moored barges fitted out as bars.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – This elegant shopping arcade is considered to be one of the main shopping centres for shopping in Milan and is one of the most beautiful covered galleries in Europe.

La Scala Opera – This 18th century theatre is one of the world’s greatest opera houses, hosting some of Italy’s most famous performances. Nothing beats seeing a show, ballet or opera in the elegant boxes adorned with gold leaf and red velvet.

AMALFI COAST South of Naples lies a coastline of dramatic cliffs, precariously perched fishing villages and the ever-present shimmering Mediterranean. This is the Amalfi Coast, which has been enticing visitors for decades to its tiny beaches and chic resort towns such as Sorrento and Positano and its island of Capri. If you are driving the coast, beware – this is no place for motorists with no head for heights, but adrenaline junkies will love the hairpin bends and vertical drops. It’s little different in the towns that cling to the hillsides, where often steep steps provide the only access to hotels and restaurants with terraces that seem to float between sea and sky. Nestle yourself into one of the coastal villages like Ravello or tiny Furore, kick back, relax and enjoy the heady views.

Capri – Take the short boat ride from Sorrento to Capri, steeped in myths and Roman history. Head to Piccola Marina following winding lanes, then wander down a precipitous flight of steps to La Canzone del Mare right by the seaside and visited

by Capri’s rich and famous.

Ravello – Enjoy tranquility in Ravello’s exquisite gardens and immerse yourself in the local village life. Villa Rufolo was built on an existing Roman structure, with a 30 metre high tower that overlooks Piazza Duomo. The Wagner Symphonic Music Festival takes place in the garden in July.

Furore – This tiny village is a good base from which to tackle Amalfi Coast walks with names like The Fishing Vixen. A cluster of old fishermen houses look like they have been glued to the cliffs. This is a dramatic and unique part of the Amalfi Coast.

Path Of The Gods – Take a walking tour along the ancient pathways, winding along shoreline cliffs from coastal towns through rustic woodland, and up to beautiful villages perched on craggy peaks. You can go beyond the crowds – just make sure you are reasonably fit!

Limoncello – The golden treasure of Amalfi. Locals affectionately call it sunshine wine and serve it chilled, like summer champagne. Walk the streets of Amalfi, from the bustling tourist district to the small villages dotting the coastline, and you will see dozens of shops displaying beautifully shaped bottles of homemade limoncello.

Public Transport – Public transport along the coast is cheap and fairly efficient.

Blue buses run from Salerno to Amalfi, and from Amalfi to Sorrento and Ravello. There is a local service within the towns. Ferries connect the principal towns of the Amalfi Coast and can be quicker than buses.

Ferries – During the summer months of April through to October a ferry service runs between Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Salerno. In the winter months ferries only run between Naples and Sorrento but are subject to cancellation due to rough seas.

Built in an 18th century historical home and previously the private residence of the noble family, De Gregorio. The hotel has kept its original style if this ancient building. It has a fabulous location only 100 metres from the train station and short walk to Tasso Square.

This family owned hotel, built in the 1950s, got its name from when the owner stood on the terrace and emotionally said, “Mira... Amal!” or “Look... Amalfi!”. The same family still owns the hotel and you’ll know what he meant when you see the spectacular vista. Rooms have views out to sea and there’s a great pool perched on top of the rocks.

Live like a local in these fantastically positioned studios, one and two bedroom apartments. An easy walk to the shopping area and located close to the largest and most glamorous beach on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 4: Bari – Altamura – Matera (69.8km) Enter the walls of Altamura to discover the historical centre surrounded by palaces and churches. Matera is a prehistoric troglodyte settlement which has developed over time but maintained a uniquely ancient feel.

Gioia del Colle – Famous for its burrata cheese and mozzarella, also “zampine” rolled sausages and the wine Primitivo Doc Gioia del Colle.

Day 5: Matera – Alberobello – Taranto (106km) Alberobello and the Itria Valley are home to UNESCO World Heritage Trulli style houses, the incredible stone huts with distinctive conical roofs.

Relax at a beach bar in Capitolo – Enjoy the sand dunes then sit back and savour the “pugliese sushi” shrimps and sea urchins.

Day 6: Taranto – Gallipoli – Lecce (155km) Travel over the swing bridge to the old town of Taranto. Visit the small fishing village of Gallipoli with beautiful beaches. Enjoy the baroque architecture in Lecce and explore the spectacular Roman amphitheatre.

Day 7: Pathway of the Gods to Positano Today is the most scenic walk on the Amalfi Coast – the Pathway of the Gods. The track is rocky and barren in parts with steep stone steps at either end, but the views are as divine as the name suggests.

CANAL BOATING – LOCABOAT

Pénichettes are exclusively custom-built for Locaboat, designed to transport you from village-to-village and from lockto-lock in easy style. The boats range from the Classic, great for couples, to the Flying Bridge with inside and outside steering positions. With your hire you receive the Captain's handbook, a cruising lesson, technical assistance 7 days a week during working hours and crockery, bed linen and towels.

Once adrift you can stop off where you choose, to explore castles, vineyards, swimming spots and cycle routes.

HOLIDAY TIPS FOR YOUR LOCABOAT • We recommend a ‘flying bridge’ as this enables better vision whilst cruising and provides another great deck area for enjoying the long summer nights.

• Electricity on the boat is operated by DC power so don’t forget an adaptor for charging your mobiles and digital cameras.

• Remember to hire a bicycle and ask for a basket, it’s great for bringing home baguettes and wine.

• When locking up or locking down, remember to move as far forward in the lock as possible and always moor at bow and stern. This allows room for other boats in the lock and means there is no chance of tipping over when the water level changes.

• It’s an excellent idea to bring (or buy at the Base) a pair of gloves to protect your hands when going through the locks.

• Always make use of the fresh water and power at moorings along the way. Keeping topped up saves the worry of running out.

• No experience is required as Locaboat will give you a full induction before departure.

Please read these booking conditions carefully CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACT The guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes.

1. OUR SERVICES AND OBLIGATIONS 1.1 House of Travel Ltd (‘we” or “us” as the case may be) supply services consisting of arranging and co-ordinating travel facilities and services, and making bookings and issuing vouchers to be redeemed by suppliers of travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services (“Suppliers”). House of Travel Ltd is part of the House of Travel group.

1.2 We undertake to perform these services with reasonable care and skill. We will not be liable for any loss or damage which results from the act, default or omission of any person other than ourselves, our employees or agents, or any cause independent of human control. This includes (but is not limited to), loss or damage which arises directly or indirectly from any act of God, weather disruptions, dangers incidental to the sea, fire, breakdown in machinery or equipment, acts of Governments or other authorities de jure or de facto, wars whether declared or not, hostilities, civil disturbances, strikes, riots, deaths, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines or medical or customs regulations.

1.3 We are not able to exercise control over services we do not supply directly, therefore we will not be responsible for any loss or damage arising from: • Any booking made directly with a service Supplier by your travel agent, or • Any services which are not directly provided by us and which are additional to those recorded in clause 1.1 above.

1.4 We will endeavour to provide the most suitable travel arrangements to meet the particular requirements you make known to us. However, travel is an individual experience, and your preferences and opinions may vary from our own. For this reason, we cannot take responsibility for your individual satisfaction.

2. SUPPLY OF TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT AND

ACCOMMODATION SERVICES AND FACILITIES 2.1 When we make bookings with Suppliers, we are acting as a booking agent for such Supplier.

2.2 All travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services are supplied directly to you by the Suppliers. We have no control over the facilities or services themselves, or the manner in which they are provided by the Suppliers. Therefore you should be aware of the following conditions: • We will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind which may arise from your use or consumption of, or inability to use or consume those facilities or services.

• The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier.

• Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier.

• All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier.

• We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you.

3. BUSINESS PURPOSES You agree that where our services are acquired for business purposes, or where you hold yourself out as acquiring our services for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply to any supply of goods or services made under these conditions, and we will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to you, including any consequential loss or damage however it may be caused.

4. INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE 4.1 While we attempt to ensure that the contents of this brochure are correct, accurate, and up to date at the time of printing, the contents of this brochure are drawn from information supplied to us by Suppliers. We do not have, and cannot be reasonably expected to have, personal knowledge about all of the facilities or services provided by each Supplier.

4.2 Facilities or services may change after the date of printing. We endeavour to keep travel agents informed of any changes to information in this brochure which are brought to our attention. Prior to completing your booking, you should ask your travel agent whether they are aware of any changes to the published information. You should also make sure that if

your travel agent is advised of changes which occur after booking, your travel agent is able to contact you.

4.3 Maps and Photographs: Maps are shown for general information and may not necessarily reflect actual routings, locations or services provided.

Photographs may show places in the geographic area which are not included in your booking. Hotel room photographs may not be the actual room occupied.

4.4 Property Information: Descriptions featured in this brochure are drawn from information provided by our Suppliers. Any facilities or services shown are subject to change at any time. Please advise your travel agent if you have any special requirements.

4.5 Room Bedding: Based on existing bedding in the room. Requests for specific bedding arrangements must be made at the time of booking but can not be guaranteed. For example, twin share may consist of single beds or a shared double bed.

4.6 Rental Cars: We cannot guarantee to provide a particular model or colour within the car category. Availability of car categories is subject to confirmation at the time of booking. We reserve the right to substitute different models. If a vehicle is returned prior to the end of the reserved rental period or if the vehicle is picked up later than the reserved date, NO REFUND will be made for unused rental days

8.3 We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. See Section 10.

9. RESERVATION AMENDMENTS We are happy to incorporate any reasonable amendments you request. An amendment constitutes a change to an existing booking and will attract a $25 fee per amendment prior to final payment and the issuing of the travel documents, and a $50 fee per amendment after travel documents have been issued. These fees are to cover administration and communication costs. You may also be required to pay any Supplier imposed fees.

10. INSURANCE We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation, loss of luggage and personal property, and medical expenses. Your travel agent will be able to provide you with further information.

11. ITEMS NOT COVERED Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included.

5. PRICES

5.1 The prices provided are a guide only based on low season, per adult share twin and are correct at the time of printing. The actual price may differ to that indicated due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Prices for tours are based on per adult per tour for share twin based on low season travel. Prices for cruises are per person for the complete cruise based on the lead-in cabin category on a low season sailing.

For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information.

5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us.

5.3 Events beyond our control, such as changes to the prices of aviation fuel or changes to the cost of services or facilities may result in the prices charged to you being different from those shown in the brochure. You should check all prices with your travel agent before making reservations, and before ticketing.

5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure.

6. HOUSE OF TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION RATINGS To assist you with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. Please note that these gradings are to be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. When selecting your accommodation please note that the overall quality of properties in the UK & Europe is generally lower than equivalent priced properties in other countries, particularly in the lower ratings. In general the room sizes are quite small and can vary, even within one property. Please check with your House of Travel consultant to ensure you get the property that best suits your needs.

7. PAYMENT 7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers.

7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure.

7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets).

8. CANCELLATION 8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible.

8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent. Cancellation fees imposed

by Suppliers and travel agents are beyond our control and you should check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable.

13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier.

14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent.

15. SERVICE SATISFACTION During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. Your contract for each service is with the Supplier. If this is not possible immediately, or if you are still dissatisfied, please contact your travel agent. Both we and your travel agent will endeavour to investigate on your behalf and to negotiate with the Supplier to resolve the matter as soon as possible, so that you continue to enjoy your journey.

16. LEGAL CLAIMS Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand.
