General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Cook Island accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and good level of comfort usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering exceptional level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and strong focus on quality food and beverages. First class accommodation including small and stylish boutique properties. Accommodation in this rating offer the very best services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction and are usually located in prime locations. They are considered the ultimate accommodation in the Cook Islands. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. It is in New Zealand dollars based on low season per person share twin pricing unless otherwise specified and is correct at the time of publishing. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at time of booking. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family's needs. Look out for our “gems of information scattered throughout our Cook Islands brochure.

COOK ISLANDS The Cook Islands are one of New Zealand’s favourite holiday destinations, and quite rightly so! These islands have some of the South Pacific’s best snorkelling, long hot sun-filled days, super friendly locals, and absolutely gorgeous beaches for all your relaxation needs. Just under four hours away this idyllic paradise is super close to us here in New Zealand. Many Kiwi’s have already cottoned on to this fact and the Cook Islands continues to be one of our most popular travelling destinations in the South Pacific. There is so much to see and do, yet the islands remain unspoilt, you won’t find traffic lights or a McDonald's and there are no buildings higher than a coconut tree! Whether you’re planning your first holiday to the Cook Islands or you are lucky enough to be returning again, we’re sure you’ll be captivated by their charm. Here are some handy tips to help you plan the perfect Cook Islands holiday.

6 T I PS FO R YOU R HOLIDAY

With the addition of Virgin Australia flying direct from Christchurch to Rarotonga and Jetstar joining Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia with flights to Rarotonga from Auckland this little paradise is becoming more and more popular for Kiwi’s. We’re already seeing resorts book out much earlier than usual, particularly over Easter and school holidays. Make sure you book early to ensure you get into your favourite resort and don’t miss out.

1 / EXPLORE ON WHEELS Don’t get caught in a Raro downpour, hire a car and follow the coastal road come rain or shine. With only 32 kilometres of road it only takes about an hour to get around. Discover deserted beaches, villages and yummy eateries along the way. You can now drive in the Cook Islands for up to six months using your full overseas license. Scooters are available too. If you have a motorcycle class on your overseas license you do not need to take a test to acquire a Cook Islands license, you just need to pay $20 at the police station for a visitor license. If you do not have a motorcycle class on your license you’ll just need to head down to the Cook Islands Police Station in Avarua and take a test riding up and down the street without falling off! It is now compulsory to wear a safety helmet while driving a scooter.

3 / BOOK EARLY

2 / IT'S A SNORKELLERS PARADISE From giant trevally to reef fish, Rarotonga’s underwater odyssey is replete with curiosities. Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve offers safe snorkelling and zero coral. Then there’s Tikioki - ‘Fruits of Rarotonga’, which is one of the island’s permanent marine parks, with a nearby café for post-snorkelling refreshments. Blackrock, which is considered one of the calmest places to snorkel in Rarotonga is great for families with kids, it also has a BBQ area.

GUIDE TO RAROTONGA

Best Eats & Drinks

6 / ISLAND HOPPING For an even slower pace of life, fly from Rarotonga to the laid-back islands of Aitutaki, Atiu, Ma’uke or Mangaia in just under an hour. The romantic island of Aitutaki is home to the most pristine turquoise, sun-kissed lagoon. Untouched and unspoiled Atiu offers secluded caves, rare tropical birds and coral sand beaches. Mau’ke known as the garden island is abundant with flowers, deep underground caves, fresh water pools and lakes. Estimated to be 18 million years old Mangaia encompasses rugged beauty, ancient artefacts and lush landscape.

It’s a small island, but Raro delivers a big feast of flavours. Take advantage of beachside shacks, quirky cafés, burger joints and water-fringing bistros. Here are some of our favourites to get you started. FINE DINING Antipodes Situated in a stunning setting on a hill in Blackrock, this Mediterranean style villa offers spectacular food, service and views that have to be seen to be believed. Fine dining in the finest of locations. SWEET TREATS FOR BREAKFAST Waffle Shack These guys take care of two of the most important meals of the day, breakfast and coffee. Crispy soft waffles, covered in ice cream and syrup, topped off with the islands best cappuccino.

4 / HOLIDAY WITH THE RELLIES When we live such busy lives, planning some time to be together with the ones we love most has become essential so why not book a multi-generational holiday in Raro with the in-laws, and grandparents in tow. It’s a good opportunity to reconnect and create memories and let’s be honest, the extra help with child care is a bonus! Ask us about super-sized villas, two and three bedroom apartments and holiday homes, we’ll help you find the right fit.

5 / HIT THE MARKETS Punanga Nui Market is a must-do for unique and well-priced Pacifica pieces, clothing, handicrafts and black pearls. Although open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, Saturday is the main market day with more stalls and live music performed on the stage. For a delicious selection of food, Muri Beach night market boasts island specialities at very reasonable prices. From curries to locally baked cakes, entertainers and stage singers.

CHEAP DRINKS Hula Bar With $3.50 cold beers and great ocean views, Hula Bar is a popular spot to mix with the locals. It’s also located right across the road from the airport, so you can check your bags in then head over for a bite to eat before catching your flight home. SUNDAY LAZY LUNCH Tuoro Restaurant & Café This is where you want to dine for lunch. Sunday’s are best as you’ll be treated to the added bonus of live music. Sample a range of dishes as well as tasty tapas but be sure to book in advance so you don’t miss out. SIGNATURE DISH Mooring Fish Café Perhaps the most famous meal on the island is the Mooring’s FOB Sandwich (Fish on bread). The freshly caught mahimahi, lime juice, and special aioli will have you salivating. You’re sure to visit more than once.

A

warm lagoon, a swaying hammock and a waft of frangipani are waiting for you in the Cook Islands, just under four hours from New Zealand. Forget long arrival procedures and complex transfers, slipping into Island life here could not be easier. Step off the plane in Rarotonga to a song of greeting and an ei (flower garland) welcome, then in no time you will be relaxing at your accommodation because although ‘Raro’ is the biggest island of the Cooks, it is really quite small. It takes only 45 minutes by car to get around the island, villages dot the shoreline, and the main town, Avarua, is probably the most easy-going national capital you’ll ever visit. As well as a great Saturday market, there are also many interesting boutiques, charming churches and loads of eateries dotted around and with a bus that circles the coast in both directions, it’s very easy to get from place to place. Rarotonga has classically gorgeous lagoon beaches but also a mountainous, forest-clad interior perfect for visitors that are wanting to do a little hiking or 4WD adventures. It’s also the stepping stone to the outer islands, and while some lie less than an hour’s flight away, the most isolated and pristine are accessible only by sea. Among those easily reached by air and catering for visitors are Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia and Ma’uke. Rich in Polynesian culture, the Cook Islands are closely linked with New Zealand, and our dollar is used here, so there’s no currency exchange to worry about on arrival.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO SEE AND DO Experience an Island Night – A must for any holiday to the Cook Islands is attending one of the many Island Night shows. Most resorts have their own, and Edgewater Resorts would be one of the more popular. Chow down on a buffet meal and try specialties such as ika mata and taro. As you dine, the cultural dance group will entertain you with traditional singing and dancing.

Stop off at these two trendy hot spots – Charlies; for live music every night, good vibes and beach access it’s a great place to enjoy a beer and watch the sunset. Beluga; for fantastic coffee, breakfast, brunch and lunch options; vegan, gluten free and vegetarian friendly.

Try Paddleboard Yoga – Learn how to paddleboard on entry-level boards, then make your way out to a quiet island venue on Muri Lagoon where you can take part in a floating yoga class.

Snorkel at Aroa Marine Reserve – Step straight off the beach into the crystal-clear waters of the Aroa Marine Reserve one of Rarotonga’s top snorkelling sites. It’s a natural breeding ground for hundreds of specials of tropical reef fish. The lagoon is especially safe for families with small children.

Enjoy the Nightlife – There’s certainly enough bars and pubs to keep you entertained in Rarotonga. And no trip to Rarotonga is complete without at least one visit to the iconic Trader Jacks.

Relax at the Beach – The Cook Islands are fringed with beautiful beaches. Our two top picks on Rarotonga are Muri Beach which is shallow, safe and popular with families and Titikaveka Beach which is great for swimming and snorkelling as the water is deeper. If you are lucky enough to be heading to Aitutaki, make sure you check out Ootu Beach, where the water colour is mesmerizingly blue or head out to One Foot Island, the most visited island in Aitutaki.

Sample the Local Brew – Rarotonga has its own brewery named Matutu. Drop by the Brewery and sample some for yourself.

The bungalows are situated in a garden setting with kitchen facilities and if you require supplies your host Moumou will be more than happy to provide transport for you to the general store. Hiring a bike or scooter is the best way to get around, the coral roads are deserted and cycling around is a blissful retreat.
