REASONS TO SET SAIL 15

Thinking of a cruise holiday but not sure you should take the plunge?

Cruising has come a long way from buffets and bingo (though you’ll still find both on some ships, if that’s your vibe).

These days, it’s more like a floating resort with ever-changing views, and the world’s best experiences just outside your door.

UNPACK ONCE, EXPLORE OFTEN

Imagine waking up in a new destination without ever having to unpack. That’s the joy of a cruise, no dragging bags, changing hotels or worrying about border crossings.

WAKE UP SOMEWHERE WOW

From sunsets over Santorini to that wow moment of sailing into Sydney Harbour, cruising gets you front-row seats to some of the world’s most iconic sights.

NO-FUSS PLANNING

Flights, hotels, meals, entertainment, transport? All sorted. Cruises roll everything into one dreamy package, making it simple and fantastic value from the get-go.

MUCH MORE VALUE THAN YOU’D EXPECT

From meals and entertainment to activities and stunning staterooms, cruising offers incredible experiences at a fraction of the cost you’d pay on land. It’s value that really goes the distance.

Mel Hubber House of Travel Ferrymead shares 15 reasons why your first cruise might just turn into your new favourite way to see the world.

ENDLESS DINING OPTIONS

From sushi bars to French bistros and gelato counters, most cruise ships are foodie playgrounds. Fancy something casual or fine dining? It’s all on board.

YOU SET THE PACE

Do everything or nothing. Morning yoga, island hikes, waterslides, wine tastings… or just a book and a lounger by the pool. You get to choose and we can help you find a ship that’s perfect for you.

GREAT FOR FAMILIES

From dedicated kids’ clubs to teen zones and family-friendly shore tours, cruising’s a hit for all ages, and it gives the grown-ups space to relax.

PERFECT FOR COUPLES

Sunset cocktails, spa days, starlit dinners and private balconies. Romance is always on the menu. There are even adults-only ships just perfect for that “kids free” time out.

SAFE, SOCIAL AND EASY

Cruising is ideal if you love travel but not the admin. Everything is run like clockwork, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded travellers, especially if you’re going it solo.

NEW SHIPS = NEXT-LEVEL FUN (IF THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR)

Think skydiving simulators, infinity pools, go-kart tracks at sea, Broadway shows, even robot bartenders. Some ships are mini floating cities of wonder. Others are boujee palaces at sea.

HIDDEN GEMS INCLUDED

Cruise itineraries often weave in lesserknown gems like Kotor in Montenegro, Miyako in Japan or Bora Bora in French Polynesia. These are the places you might not plan to visit but will fall in love with.

SEE THE WILD, THE EASY WAY

Glacier-carved fjords in Alaska, the volcanic shores of the Big Island, humpback whales in Antarctica. Cruising gets you up close to nature without having to rough it.

SUITS ALL BUDGETS

From cosy great value interior staterooms to luxe suites with butlers, cruising works whether you’re watching your wallet or ready to splurge.

A FLOATING FAMILY REUNION

For milestone birthdays, special anniversaries or multi-gen getaways, cruising makes logistics easy. Everyone gets their own space, but you’re always together.

TRY BEFORE YOU FLY

Short cruises from Auckland, Sydney or Brisbane are a brilliant intro for first-timers.

Test the waters, literally. Remember though, on a very short cruise (3-4 nights) it will be more of a party vibe, so choose longer itineraries for a better overall destination experience.

WHAT’S MAKING WAVES IN THE WORLD OF CRUISE HOLIDAYS?

THE HOT LIST

Whether you’re a river roamer, an expedition enthusiast or just cruise-curious, we’ve rounded up the hottest new ways to holiday on the water. We’re talking spine-tingly, bucket list-tickingly good. Think aurora-lit Arctic nights, intimate Greek island hopping, African coastal discoveries, and voyages so epic they deserve their own soundtrack.

RIVER CRUISING GOES LUXE AND LOCAL

River cruising isn’t just for European castle-spotting anymore (though we still love that too). New ships from Uniworld, AmaWaterways and Viking are redefining slow travel with smaller, more stylish vessels, boutique dining and deeper dives into local life. Expect vineyard lunches in Portugal’s Douro Valley, springtime blossoms from your balcony in Northern France or lantern-lit temple strolls along the Mekong.

EXPEDITIONS THAT PUSH THE EDGE

Adventure cruising is going boldly where few have gone before, and in some serious style. You’ll experience state-of-the-art icebreakers venturing deep into Antarctica’s icy wilderness, or boutique vessels exploring the remote beauty of the Kimberley coast. For those drawn to the elusive, now is the time to consider Northwest Passage crossings and Arctic Circle adventures under the Northern Lights.

GREECE – BUT MAKE IT SECRET

Santorini and Mykonos? Been there. The latest Greek itineraries are all about the under-the-radar islands, the kind with sleepy tavernas, hidden beaches and no crowds in sight. Windstar, Celestyal and Ponant are leading the charge, offering smaller ships that slip into the dreamy Dodecanese or sun-soaked Ionian like they belong there.

EXPERIENCE A FLOATING CITY

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas isn’t just a ship… it’s a destination. It boasts eight distinct neighbourhoods, seven pools, and over 40 dining and entertainment venues. With everything from waterslides, zones just for strolling and mooching, and shows with aquatic athletic stunts beneath a towering, shapeshifting waterfall - there’s no way any member of your tribe will ever get bored.

INTIMATE JOURNEYS ON SMALL SHIPS

If the thought of 5000 people on one vessel makes you twitch, that doesn’t mean cruising isn’t for you. There are some seriously cool small-ship options right now – like sleek ‘yachts’, carrying just 148 to 342 guests, or ultra-luxury with space for only 100. Small ship cruises provide access to lesser-known ports and a more relaxed atmosphere, making you feel like you’re on your own private yacht.

AFRICA BY SEA – A NEW FRONTIER

A growing number of cruise lines are charting courses along Africa’s lesserexplored coasts. From South Africa to Mozambique, Ghana to Morocco - these routes combine safari-style wildlife encounters with cultural deep dives, local cuisine and incredible ports you won’t find on typical cruise calendars.

“Ask us about repositioning cruises. They occur when ships move between regions for seasonal deployments. These voyages often feature unique itineraries and offer excellent value, making them a favourite among seasoned cruisers looking for something a little bit different.”

EXPLORE ALASKA’S WILD FRONTIER

Alaska serves up unfiltered nature with more than 1,000 coastal islands in the Alexander Archipelago, humpback whales breaching out of nowhere, puffins waddling about in ultimate cuteness, seals living their best lives on the ice, and glaciers so majestic they’ll quickly take up all the space on your phone’s photo gallery. This is all about having the space to breathe, disconnect and swap the latest social media drama for icebergs and northern lights - your mental health will thank you.

DEEP DIVES WITH COUNTRY— INTENSIVE CRUISES

Cruises can often be about ticking off multiple countries in one go, but there are also options to slow down and explore just one. That’s the magic of a country-intensive itinerary - instead of skimming the surface, you’ll get to dive deep. Azamara’s Temples and Cherry Blossoms voyage is 15 days of soaking up Japan’s culture, cuisine, and coastlines one fascinating port at a time.

LONGER VOYAGES ARE HAVING A MOMENT

If you’ve ever dreamed of disappearing for a few months, now’s your time. World cruises, grand voyages and longer immersive itineraries are trending with every type of traveller. You’ll unpack once and visit a dozen countries… all while sampling sashimi in Japan one night and dancing tango in Buenos Aires the next.

Ask us about how you can indulge in over 100-night journeys where you’ll visit 48 destinations across 26 countries.

TURKEY IS TRENDING

Cruising the Turkish Riviera, also known as the Turquoise Coast, is having a serious moment. It’s all about sapphire waters, ancient ruins, colourful bazaars and sun-drenched ports like Bodrum, Kusadasi and Marmaris. Expect gulet-style charm (think classic wooden sailing vessels), combined with the ease of small-ship cruising, and fewer crowds than Greece or Croatia. This is all about affordable luxury, epic history and turquoise coves you can swim straight into from the ship.

NEVER CRUISED BEFORE?

Ask us about our last minute cruise deals. These are often available on last cabins and close-to-home sailings and allow you to snap up some unbeatable value deals. This is a great way to dip your toes into the wonders of the ultimate, all-in-one holiday experience. Trust us, once you’ve tried a cruise holiday you will be hooked!

WHERE TO, CAPTAIN?

With hundreds of ships and thousands of cruise itineraries, it’s easy to feel adrift when choosing a cruise. The best way to start? Pick your dream destination. Then we’ll help you match it with the cruise line that best suits your style of travel.

And when it comes to mealtimes or onshore adventures, you want to keep things easy and flexible. Because your perfect holiday is one where the only rule is do what you love, when you love it.

THE TRAVELLER / Think no one packs pearls for a cruise anymore? Think again. For those who crave old-school elegance with a modern twist, six-star cruise lines still do it properly.

THE CRUISE / We’re talking marble foyers, crystal chandeliers and gallery-worthy collections featuring everything from Chagall to Picasso.

You travel to feel truly indulged, and you expect your adventures on land to match the elegance at sea. THE RESORT CRUISER
THE ULTRA LUXURY CRUISER
THE LUXURY SEEKER

THE ADVENTURER

THE TRAVELLER / You’re not here for the buffet. You’re here for the bucket list. For you, cruising isn’t about lounging poolside. It’s the ultimate launchpad to the planet’s most remote and remarkable corners.

THE CRUISE / Think icebergs, archipelagos, ancient ruins and raw, untamed beauty.

Expedition ships are your kind of vessel – nimble enough to reach the places big ships can’t and packed with passionate experts who’ll turn every Zodiac landing into a story worth retelling. Glaciers, wildlife, culture, volcanoes – if it’s wild and wondrous, you want to be there.

THE COUPLE

THE TRAVELLER / No kids. No clocks. No chaos. Just the two of you and a cruise that knows exactly what that means.

THE CRUISE / Some ships are designed with couples in mind, offering adults-only spaces, longer days in port and just the right amount of pampering. Think cooking schools, serene spas and dreamy rooms made for two. Private balconies. Personal service. Four-course dinners served with bubbles and a sea view.

Fancy more peace and quiet? Reserve your own cabana in the adults’ area and let the world melt away.

THE FOOD LOVER

THE TRAVELLER / If you’ve written off cruise dining as endless buffets and mystery meat… it’s time to taste again.

THE CRUISE / We’re talking Maine lobster, 28-day dry-aged beef and Michelin-level menus that turn mealtimes into moments. Many ships now sail with executive chefs at the helm, plus cooking classes, wine tastings and entire itineraries designed around the flavours of the region.

Whether you’re sampling sashimi off the coast of Japan or sipping shiraz after a South Aussie sear, this is where the food is the destination.

THE INDEPENDENT SOUL

THE TRAVELLER / Think cruising’s just for loved-up couples and family bonding time? Think again.

THE CRUISE / Today’s cruises are throwing out the rulebook when it comes to going it solo. From meet-your-people mixers to cheeky singles’ cocktail nights, the vibe is all about connecting, not coupling. Many cruise lines are now rolling out the welcome mat for solo travellers with single rooms, group chats before departure and ready-made social calendars. Think Happy Hour hangouts, live comedy, and new friends around every corner.

THE FAMILY

THE TRAVELLER / Got a bunch of kids and everyone’s dreaming of a holiday?

THE CRUISE / Cruises are like floating playgrounds for all ages, with fully supervised kids’ clubs that keep little ones happy from ages 3 to 17. There’s even late-night group babysitting, so parents can sneak in a date night under the stars. As for the teens? Good luck keeping up. Think rock climbing, ziplining, ice skating, surfing and even skydiving simulators. Add in epic pools, sports courts and endless snacks and you’ve got the perfect mix of freedom for them and peace of mind for you. Because every minute they don’t want to spend with you, they can safely spend having the time of their lives. Sound good?

THE TRAVELLER / You’re not convinced cruising is your thing. We get it.

THE CRUISE / Modern cruising is less floating buffet, more floating freedom. Want non-stop action? You’ll find it. Prefer a quiet spot with a book and the sound of the sea? That’s here too. There are ships with razzle. Ships with zero dazzle. Ships where you dine under the stars or chat with the whānau over fish and chips.

From Alaska to Auckland, the Med to the Caribbean, if you’ve got a travel style, there’s a cruise that matches it.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIME CRUISERS

Going on your first cruise and feeling a bit at sea? Here are Kirstin’s ten top tips to help make it smooth sailing.

Kirstin Curling House of Travel Milford highlights her most helpful hints for those new to cruise.

FIND OUT WHAT’S INCLUDED — AND WHAT’S NOT — WELL AHEAD OF TIME

Food? Drink? Wi-Fi? Tips? Some cruises throw it all in, others not so much. Double-check what’s part of your deal beforehand so you’re not hit with unexpected charges – it will make everything so much more relaxing once on board. Most cruise lines have strict rules around BYO, so check with your HOT consultant about what you are allowed to take on board.

GET APP-HAPPY

Most cruise lines have phone apps that act like your onboard bestie – very helpful for daily schedules, restaurant bookings and other important information. But they can also contain discounts you’re going to want to know about sooner rather than later. Download the one for your cruise line as soon as you’ve booked, so you can orient yourself ahead of time and make the best use of those pre-departure discounts.

EXCURSIONS: BOOK SMART

Popular shore excursions can sell out fast, so lock in any must-dos well before you set sail (especially those ones that mean you skip long queues at big-ticket attractions). But also, don’t overschedule yourself –sometimes the best days are the ones spent wandering the port (or ship!) with an ice cream in hand. Just make sure you’re back well in time for the ship’s departure.

CHECK THE DRESS CODE

SITUATION

Some cruises are come-as-you-like casual, others might expect slightly more formal attire in certain restaurants or at some events. Some offer themed nights like Pirate Nights on Disney or White Night on Azamara and Orange Night on Holland America. Make sure you check beforehand and pack accordingly.

EMBARK LIKE A PRO

Flying to your embarkation point? Arrive a day early if you can – the last thing you want is the stress of an unexpected flight delay. It’s also good to know you may not be able to access your room until the afternoon and your luggage might take a while to show up in your cabin on Day 1, so pack a day bag with your togs, sunnies, and anything else you want straight away. Prescription meds should always be in your carry-on.

DON’T SKIMP ON INSURANCE

Yes, insurance contracts are boring. But also essential. If something goes not-quite-to-plan, like missing the ship at a port (it happens!) – comprehensive travel insurance with cruise cover will be your best friend. Unfortunately onboard medical care isn’t free, so you want to know you’ll be okay if something happens.

7 BE PREPARED

Even if you’ve never been seasick before, the ocean might have plans for you. Pack ginger tablets, sea bands or motion sickness pills, just in case.

Book a room midship on a lower deck –it’s the most stable spot.

PLUG IN, THE SMART WAY

Most ships have US/UK/European power points so an adapter is a must. USB ports are common on newer ships, but always take your own cables and adapters. You generally cannot take multi-boards or multi-plug adapters on cruise ships, with many cruise lines prohibiting them altogether.

BEWARE THE HIDDEN DATA CHARGES

Mobile roaming has some extra tricks when you’re cruising. For example, you might have a great daily phone plan with your provider for when you’re in Aussie, but when you’re between New Zealand and Australian shores you’re technically in international waters on Maritime roaming, so not covered. To avoid unexpected bills, switch off data roaming before you leave port. When you are ashore look out for free Wi-Fi spots. 8 9

EXPECT A LITTLE HOLIDAY PADDING

Let’s be honest – with endless food choices, cocktails by the pool, midnight pizza and dessert bars, you’ll probably gain a kilo or two. It’s something many cruisers talk about. But that’s part of the fun, right? Bring stretchy pants, take the stairs instead of elevators when you can, use the amazing gyms or workout classes onboard and go with the flow.

SUITE DREAMS ARE MADE AT SEA

STATEROOM OR BALCONY SUITE?

Planning a cruise holiday but not sure which type of room to book? You’re not alone - it can all seem a bit daunting. A lot will depend on your budget, needs, how many people you’re travelling with - and even how well you handle the motion of the ocean. While staterooms vary between cruise lines, most ships offer a few standard categories.

INTERIOR ROOM

These staterooms get their name from being located in the interior of the ship, funnily enough. As you’d expect, they have no windows, but they’re a great option if budget is a consideration or if you’re the social type who’d rather be at the pool, the bar, watching a movie or exploring a port than reading in your room. Perfect for those who like a dark room for a good night’s sleep. Some Royal Caribbean ships offer a virtual outside window, which is a large LED screen showing an outside view of the ship.

OBSTRUCTED VIEW ROOMS

These are a great intermediate option between Interior and Oceanview. You will have a window, but the view outside may be obstructed by a lifeboat or some of the ship infrastructure. They still have the same great amenities in your room, but the lack of a full view can make them much cheaper while still giving you a peep of the world outside.

OCEANVIEW STATEROOM

These rooms are often similar in size to interior cabins but come with a picture window or porthole offering a view of the sea. Sometimes referred to as outside staterooms, they offer more natural light and a peek at the world outside. The window size can vary – from small portholes to large panes that take up a good part of the exterior wall - great for checking out what the weather is doing at your next port of call.

BALCONY STATEROOM

The clue’s in the name – with a private balcony, you can feel like you’re almost on the water itself. On a calm day, it’s the perfect spot for a morning coffee or evening sundowner. These rooms are especially worthwhile if fresh air and scenery is part of the appeal of your trip – think Alaskan glaciers or the fjords of Norway. Some cruises are all about hopping from one exciting port to the next, while others are just as much about the spectacular journey in between.

“It’s not just the type of stateroom that matters – where it’s located on the ship can make a difference too. Rooms near busy spots like lifts, stairwells, guest laundries, or entertainment venues may be noisier, and if you’re prone to seasickness, midship cabins tend to be more stable than those near the bow or stern.”

Kelly-Ann Patterson

SUITE

Suites are usually the top-tier option, and there is often quite a bit of variation within the category itself. More spacious than other stateroomsand with separate living areas - they come with balconies and a range of extras, from upgraded furnishings and luxury amenities to priority services, butlers, and access to exclusive areas of the ship.

INTER-CONNECTING ROOMS

These are often available in all room categories and make for a much more enjoyable family space so everyone is not piled in together. It is essentially two adjoining identical rooms with an inter-connecting door. Perfect for extended family groups plus you get the benefit of more storage space and a second bathroom. A great option if you can’t stretch the budget to a suite.

ACCESSIBLE ROOMS

All ships have a limited amount of accessible rooms. Talk to your House of Travel cruise specialist about your requirements and book early as they sell out fast.

WHERE WELLNESS MEETS THE WAVES

FIVE WAYS TO FEEL GOOD ON A CRUISE

If you thought cruises were all cocktails and cake buffets, think again. Today’s ships are floating sanctuaries of wellness, designed to help you nourish your body, clear your mind and come home feeling lighter… in spirit, if not your suitcase.

1. EAT CLEAN, AND DELICIOUS

Gone are the days when cruise dining meant choosing between steak or fish. Wellness-conscious cruisers now have gourmet, cleaneating menus to look forward to. Oceania’s Aquamar Kitchen is one of our top picks… think power bowls, cold-pressed juices, and avocado toast with a view. All ships also offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and low-sugar options, so you can stay on track without missing out.

2. SPA YOUR WAY AROUND THE WORLD

Every good cruiser deserves a little pampering. From the hydrotherapy pools of Celebrity’s Sea Thermal Suite to the sauna and snow grottos on Viking, you’ll find plenty of places to let go of life’s tension. Pick shore excursions that heal the soul. Try a traditional hammam in the Arabian Gulf or a volcanic hot stone massage in the Pacific. Bliss.

3. GET ACTIVE

Whether you’re into sunrise yoga on the deck or smashing your personal best on a treadmill with an ocean view, cruise fitness has come a long way. Many ships now offer classes like Pilates, spin, TRX and even boxing. Love your steps? You’ll get plenty exploring every port. And if you’re sailing with Regent Seven Seas or Viking, wellness shore excursions – like forest bathing or beachside tai chi – take things next level.

4. MINDFULNESS, YOUR WAY

You don’t need to go full retreat mode to find peace on a cruise – although you absolutely can. Whether it’s guided meditation, a sound bath session, or simply reading a book in a quiet lounge with sea views all around, wellness on board is what you make of it. Even slowing down to watch a sunrise from the top deck can be a soul-soothing ritual.

5. SLEEP LIKE YOU MEAN IT

There’s something about sleeping at sea – the gentle rock of the ocean, the black-out quiet of your room, and the lack of early alarms. But cruise lines are dialling it up even further. Look out for Princess Cruises’ award-winning beds, Silversea’s butler-drawn baths, and turndown treats like pillow menus and lavender sprays. Say goodbye to restless nights and hello to deep, dreamy slumber.

ONE RIVER CRUISE AT A TIME

Antony Boomer House of Travel Dunedin spotlights four of his favourite river cruise holidays.

THE RHINE, EUROPE

CASTLES, CATHEDRALS AND FAIRY-TALE

TOWNS |

The Rhine is one of Europe’s classic cruising rivers, and for good reason. Stretching from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, it’s a ribbon of beauty passing through four countries and countless charming towns. Think medieval castles, cobbled lanes, gothic cathedrals and riverbanks bursting with wildflowers. You might enjoy a glass of crisp riesling in Rüdesheim one day, and cycle the storybook streets of Strasbourg the next. Whether you’re into history, art, food or simply watching the world go by, the Rhine delivers in style.

For an iconic experience you’re unlikely to forget, cruise through the Christmas markets of Europe. Picture cobbled town squares dusted with snow, wooden stalls aglow with fairy lights, and the scent of roasted chestnuts and cinnamon wafting the crisp winter air. From the storybook charm of Strasbourg to the riverside magic of Vienna, this is festive travel at its finest – a true bucket list experience.

THE MEKONG, SE ASIA

COLOUR, CULTURE AND CONTRAST |

Cruising the Mekong feels like stepping into another world. This mighty river pulses through Cambodia and Vietnam, offering a rich blend of traditional life and vibrant culture. You’ll float past stilt houses and floating markets, visit golden temples, and meet locals who still fish, farm and trade just as they have for generations. It’s immersive, intimate and packed with pinch-me moments, especially if you pair it with time in Ho Chi Minh City or the temples of Angkor.

THE DOURO, PORTUGAL

GOLDEN LIGHT AND VINTAGE WINE |

Portugal’s Douro River is a firm favourite with Kiwi travellers, and it’s not hard to see why. Flowing through sun-soaked valleys blanketed with terraced vineyards, this is a cruise for lovers of fine food, wine and scenery. The Douro’s narrower path means ships are smaller and more intimate –but that also means they book out early, especially in spring and autumn when the valley glows with colour. A Douro cruise lets you sample rich port wine in the cellars of Porto, stroll through storybook towns like Pinhão and marvel at the spectacular landscapes of northern Portugal – all while enjoying award-winning local cuisine onboard.

THE NILE, EGYPT

ANCIENT WONDERS, TIMELESS RIVER | There’s something undeniably magical about cruising the Nile. As the lifeblood of Egypt, this river winds past some of the world’s most iconic archaeological treasures… from the grand temples of Luxor and Karnak to the Valley of the Kings. River cruising here is booming, with brand-new ships from Viking and AmaWaterways offering more ways to explore in comfort and style. Cooler months are best for travel, as you’ll beat the crowds and the heat. Don’t miss a visit to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo – a game-changer for lovers of history and culture.

“River cruises tend to be more boutique with limited rooms, so they often sell out well in advance, especially on popular routes like the Douro or Nile. If you’re dreaming of one, now’s the time to chat with a House of Travel cruise specialist and get it locked in. Book well in advance.”

FAMILY AHOY! CRUISING WITH THE CREW

BIG ADVENTURES, LITTLE TRAVELLERS

ADVENTURE AT SEA

If your family motto is ‘go big or go home’, then Royal Caribbean is your cruise line. Think the tallest slide at sea, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, ten-storey-high zip lines and the chance to hang ten on the FlowRider® surf simulator – all before lunch. After dark, the thrills continue with Broadway-calibre shows, ice-skating and jaw-dropping AquaTheater stunts. Mealtimes are a breeze too, with complimentary dining that caters to every taste, from globe-trotting flavour-seekers to fussier eaters who prefer to keep it simple. And when it’s time to chill, spacious family rooms and next-level suites (hello, Ultimate Family Townhouse!) mean no one’s tripping over each other. So much is included in the fare, you’ll finally get to be the ‘yes’ parent – at least most of the time.

WHERE MAGIC MEETS THE SEA

If your little ones live in a world of Elsa, Iron Man and Mickey-shaped everything – get ready to blow their minds. A Disney cruise brings the magic to the high seas, with your kids’ favourite characters wandering the decks in real life (and yes, you’ll spot more than a few grown-up superfans too). This year, the excitement ramps up with Bluey joining the fun on local Disney Wonder sailings – just one more reason to watch their faces light up. From Broadway-style musicals and themed dining to splash zones, waterslides, fireworks at sea and deck parties that turn the ship into a floating festival, it’s the ultimate Disney adventure.

FAMILY FUN, ITALIAN STYLE

With Costa, family holidays feel as easy as they are exciting and take on a real European flavour. Think spacious suites, interconnecting rooms, kidfriendly dining and non-stop entertainment that keeps everyone smiling. Little ones love Squok Club – a wonderland of treasure hunts, bubble shows, karaoke, pool parties and dress-ups. There’s even the chance to be a ‘Princess for a Day’ or a ‘Captain in Training’. Teens can dive into their own world with gaming sessions, themed dinners and dance parties. And while it’s a treat having the kids entertained (hello, sun lounger!), there’s plenty of fun to share together too – like the rope garden adventure park, family shows, mini golf and splash-worthy pools. Travelling with tiny tots? The wide walkways and stroller-friendly design make life that much smoother.

Ask us about the ships with deluxe roomsthey have a split bathroom set-up that’s perfect for families.

IN THE KNOW / Ask us about the best itineraries with extra family perks, we’ve got the inside word.

Pulling off the perfect family holiday isn’t always easy, especially when you’re trying to cater for different ages. Cruising is a great option, as there are so many ways to keep everyone entertained. With kids’ clubs for the littlies, movies, waterslides, videos, dance parties and so much more for older kids, along with plenty of things just for adults allowing for ‘parent only’ time as well as ‘family time’, everyone will be happy.

How often can you say that about a holiday?

THRILLS FOR ALL

This is not your average family holiday. Norwegian Cruise Line takes fun at sea to the next level on their newer resort style ships, with towering waterslides, tubing zones, splash parks, laser tag, virtual reality arcades and the only Go-Kart race track at sea. The free Kids’ Clubs and complimentary dining for under-12s at specialty restaurants keep everyone happy, especially the grown-ups. You’ll find loads to enjoy together too, from ziplines and mini golf to pickleball and even a game of bocce. When the sun goes down, the fun keeps going with Broadway shows like Beetlejuice, live game shows such as The Price is Right, and dance parties that last well past bedtime. Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or just keen to let loose, this is one cruise where boredom doesn’t stand a chance.

NON-STOP FAMILY FUN

Carnival knows how to turn family holidays into the kind of memories that get talked about for years. In fact, it’s often hard to convince the whānau to leave the ship when you reach port. Kids aged 2 to 11 are grouped by age for non-stop fun, from arts and crafts to cultural activities and NASA-inspired adventures. Tweens can hang at Circle C with movies, games and dance parties, while Club O2 keeps teens entertained with karaoke, video games, sports and themed nights. Families staying in Family Harbor or Byron Beach Club Staterooms enjoy exclusive lounge access, with daily breakfast, snacks, movies and games all in one cosy spot. Most specialty restaurants let kids dine free, and with a water park featuring racing slides and the famous Twister Waterslide, plus an indoor trampoline park, there’s always something to burn off the energy.

PLAY, SPLASH, REPEAT

MSC Cruises are packed with family-friendly fun from the moment you step on board. Kids’ clubs offer everything from sports tournaments and quizzes to the high-energy Doremi disco. The action ramps up with waterslides, an aqua park, VR games, zip-lines and even a Formula 1 simulator. Each cruise includes a LEGO® Experience Day, plus Broadway-style shows and a video game room to keep everyone entertained. On shore, Family Fun excursions are designed to explore each port at a pace little legs can handle. Mealtimes are an international adventure too, with casual buffets and main restaurant dining included. Kids can even eat with the youth team if they’ve made new mates or if parents are after a quiet evening to themselves.

IN THE KNOW / Ask us which ships have go-kart racing and glow-in-thedark laser tag. They’re next-level crowd-pleasers.

IN THE KNOW / Ask us about Family Harbor or Byron Beach Club – it’s the secret sauce for stressfree cruising with kids.

TRAVELLING ON YOUR OWN, BUT NEVER ALONE

CHASE WATERFALLS AND WILD HORIZONS ON A KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISE

Why did you choose a Kimberley cruise?

I love expedition voyages because they get you up close and personal with the destination, letting you see nature and wilderness from a perspective you just can’t experience on a land-based trip. The Kimberley was high on my list to explore after hearing so many amazing reports from friends and family who had travelled to this region.

When is the best time to visit?

The Kimberley season is short — usually May to August, although some operators now extend sailings from April to September. We chose June; it’s close enough to the end of the wet season to catch spectacular waterfalls yet early enough to avoid the high humidity that creeps in later. The weather was perfect and the seas calm.

What can you expect on board?

Expedition travel isn’t about the ship; it’s about the destination. Coral Expeditions’ incredible team provides daily briefings on the experiences ahead, including any cultural insights. Their purpose-built Xplorer Tenders mean all guests can head ashore at once, with no waiting around. You board directly from the ship, the platform lowers into the sea, and you’re off — no scrambling into zodiacs. The Xplorers are shaded (bliss in the Kimberley heat) and zodiacs are on hand for closer looks to smaller places of interest. Coffee, tea and biscuits are available 24/7 to take back to your room.

What about off-ship adventures?

You’re off the ship twice a day. Each outing starts in an Xplorer, with zodiacs ready at the destination for anyone keen to get right up close. The Kimberley is wonderfully diverse: dramatic rock formations, intriguing cultural wonders, prolific birdlife, crocs, turtles and sunsets that demand a full camera roll. Sunset drinks on a remote beach was a special highlight.

JEFF’S TIPS / PACKING

Pack PLENTY OF SHORTS, tees, a sun hat and sunnies.

A LIGHT WATERPROOF OR WINDBREAKER is handy for waterfall visits.

Coral Expeditions gives you a REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLE and has hydration stations and electrolyte drinks on board — use them to dodge dehydration.

The VIBE IS CASUAL, but you’ll welcome fresh clothes for dinner after hot days.

Don’t forget WET-LANDING SHOES; Keen sandals are great thanks to their sturdy grip.

“Book early — our ship carried just 105 guests and the season is short. For milder weather, sail late May or June; for whale migration, aim for late July or August. This voyage is pure gold for explorers, nature lovers and adventurers wanting to escape busy city hubs and tourist hotspots.”

How’s the food?

Coral Expeditions offers three fantastic choices at lunch and dinner, plus an open buffet for breakfast. They cater well for dietary needs and include wine, beer and house spirits with lunch and dinner. Dine inside in the air-con or outside on the aft deck — we chose the fresh air and views every time.

Is there entertainment?

Not in the usual cruise sense as expedition voyages are all about experiencing a destination and learning about the region you are travelling through. Evenings feature a guest lecture on the next day’s region, and the expedition team recaps the highlights, sharing the amazing photos they took during the day. I love that they send you these photos at the end of the trip. Quiz nights pop up for anyone keen, and stargazing on the top deck is a phenomenal way to view stunning constellations in the Kimberley skies.

What are the rooms like?

Very comfortable and surprisingly spacious for a small ship: private shower and WC, decent storage, good wardrobe space and room for suitcases under the bed. There is no TV, but Wi-Fi works well — buy the faster pack if you’ll need it for more than social media. We had a Veranda Room on the Explorer Deck and used the balcony constantly for photos and relaxing.

Other-worldly rock formations carved by time. The geology is just incredible.

Fiery sunsets that set the sky ablaze, night after night.

Bird and nature lovers will be in heaven. Swooping osprey, majestic sea eagles and teeming birdlife on the Lacepede Islands.

Montgomery Reef rising dramatically from the sea.

The Horizontal Falls are exhilarating, and sweeping panoramas from the top of Mitchell Falls

FIND YOUR FLOW

Want your holiday to leave you glowing inside and out? Windstar’s Wellness Cruises are small-ship sanctuaries where mornings start with yoga, days are filled with nourishing food and spa workshops, and the entire vibe is pure bliss. The goal? Come home better than you left.

CRUISE INTO COCKTAIL HOUR.

There’s something about a cocktail on a cruise that just hits different. Maybe it’s the salty breeze, the sea views, or the fact you don’t need to worry about who’s driving. Whether it’s a spritzy sunset sip or a latenight espresso pick-me-up, drinks on deck feel like a celebration of life. So, to help you pair your drink with your dream destination, here are a few tempting tipples that taste even better when you’re cruising.

APEROL SPRITZ

WHERE TO DRINK IT | AMALFI COAST, ITALY

Golden hour, gondolas gliding by, and a Spritz in hand. In Italy, this bittersweet blend of Aperol, prosecco and soda is more than a drink… It’s a ritual. Add a generous slice of orange and lots of ice, and it’s basically sunshine in a glass.

PALOMA

WHERE TO DRINK IT | CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO

Planning to dock in Mexico? Skip the margarita and try a Paloma instead. This bright, zesty blend of grapefruit soda, tequila and lime is refreshingly less sweet, infinitely more sippable, and made for long, lazy afternoons by the pool.

Some cruise lines include drinks packages and others provide a range of add on options. Chat to your House of Travel cruise specialist to work out what’s right for you.

SINGAPORE SLING

WHERE TO DRINK IT | SINGAPORE

This flamboyant number hails from the Raffles Hotel and brings together gin, cherry liqueur, pineapple juice, and a parade of garnishes. If you’re cruising through Southeast Asia, it’s the perfect way to toast an exotic day ashore.

PINA COLADA

WHERE TO DRINK IT | SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

If you’re sailing through the Caribbean, the only thing better than the view is a frosty Piña Colada in hand. Blended with rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, this beachy classic tastes like a tropical holiday in every sip. Add a little umbrella, just because.

KIR ROYALE

WHERE TO DRINK IT | RIVER SEINE, FRANCE

Elegant and effortlessly chic, just like cruising the Seine. This Parisian favourite blends crème de cassis with champagne, making it the perfect pre-dinner pour. Bonus points if you’re sipping it while watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle.

Tempt your tastebuds at sea, where every meal is a voyage.

If you haven’t been on a cruise before, it’s easy to imagine the dining scene as one giant all-you-can-eat buffet. And while that’s definitely part of the fun (especially if you’re travelling with always-hungry kids!), there’s a whole world of flavours waiting beyond the pizza bar.

These days, cruise dining has levelled up big time. We’re talking unforgettable meals in specialty restaurants that would cost a small fortune on land, but at sea? Often just a fraction of the price. Cruising has become the perfect excuse to treat yourself, try something new, and tuck into some truly extraordinary culinary moments.

MICHELIN MAGIC WITHOUT THE MICHELIN BILL

Yes, really. You’ll now find menus designed by world-renowned Michelin-starred chefs on many cruise ships.

Disney Cruise Line’s adults-only restaurant Enchanté (on Disney Wish and Disney Treasure) features an elegant French-inspired menu from Arnaud Lallement—who just happens to have three Michelin stars.

Over on Crystal Cruises, their Italian restaurant Osteria d’Ovidio was created with the help of culinary legends the Alajmo brothers. Massimiliano is the youngest chef in history to earn three Michelin stars, and Raffaele co-owns their celebrated eateries. Crystal also brings Japanese-Peruvian flair to the sea at Umi Uma, by the one and only Master Chef Nobu Matsuhisa.

Princess Cruises has teamed up with Emmanuel Renaut, the three-starred French chef behind Flocons de Sel, to bring Bistro Sur La Mer to a handful of ships, including Majestic Princess, Sky Princess, Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess.

WINDSTAR + THE JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION = SERIOUS FOODIE HEAVEN

Windstar Cruises is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, and that means serious culinary cred. Their main dining room, Amphora, showcases dishes dreamed up by an all-star roster of guest chefs. On themed cruises, you’ll find everything from onboard cooking demos to exclusive market tours and menus curated by some of the biggest names in the business.

TASTE THE WORLD AS YOU GO

Welcome to S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste)— Silversea’s immersive, flavour-first programme designed by Adam Sachs, former editor-in-chief of Saveur. It’s your passport to tasting the soul of each destination.

At sea, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers hands-on cooking classes and tastings, while S.A.L.T. Kitchen serves up rotating menus inspired by the region you’re sailing through. Even the cocktails get a local twist at S.A.L.T. Bar. On shore? Think trawling fish markets in Estonia or learning to forage Nordic-style with a top chef in Bergen. It’s all about getting a deeper, more delicious understanding of the place.

THE FINEST CUISINE AT SEA (LITERALLY)

Oceania Cruises doesn’t just claim to serve the finest cuisine at sea… they really mean it. Their legendary dining is led by celebrated FrenchAmerican chef Jacques Pépin, who’s shaped their menus for more than a decade.

You’ll find a line-up of superb specialty restaurants on board (and they’re all included, no extra charge). There’s Red Ginger for bold Asian fusion, Toscana for authentic Italian, and Polo Grill if you fancy a classic steakhouse experience.

Expect crisp white tablecloths, knowledgeable sommeliers, and croissants that could give Parisian patisseries a run for their money. The best part? You can dine in one of these worldclass spots every night—without the bill shock.

WHAT ABOUT DIETARY NEEDS?

A few years ago, travelling with food restrictions on a cruise was tricky. Now? Not so much. From gluten-free and dairy-free to vegan or simply health-conscious, cruise lines are now onboard with catering for all kinds of preferences. Some even log your dietary needs digitally, so the crew can guide you towards the best options at every meal.

With wellness becoming more of a priority, you’ll spot healthy options on most menus these days. One of our favourites? Aquamar Kitchen on Oceania’s newest ships—it’s clean, delicious, and a total win for anyone wanting to eat well while sailing the seas.

ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME SHORE EXCURSIONS

Some moments are so magical they have to be experienced to be believed. From helicopter hops over Australia’s wild Kimberley to private wine tastings in a monastery, these shore adventures let you step behind the velvet rope and straight into the kind of memories that make dinner-party jaws drop.

1 YOUR OWN OVER-WATER CABANA IN THE BAHAMAS

Perfect Day at CocoCay lets a limited number of lucky groups claim a Bora Bora-style over-water cabana, complete with slide, hammock, butler service and Champagne on speed-dial. Skip the scramble for sun-loungers and spend the day floating above neon-blue water in pure, private bliss.

A FLY-IN SALMON FEAST AT TAKU GLACIER LODGE

Lift off in a vintage seaplane from Juneau, skim five icy glaciers, then land beside a 1923 log lodge where aldersmoked wild salmon sizzles on the grill and black bears sometimes wander past the windows. On the Alaska Inside Passage sailings, the table and the airstrip will be reserved just for you.

CANDLE-LIT RIESLINGS IN A 12TH-CENTURY MONASTERY

Guests can slip inside Eberbach Monastery after hours for a private wine tasting and medieval banquet beneath soaring Gothic vaults. It’s just your small group, centuries-old casks and the echo of history.

HELICOPTER FLIGHT AND

SWIM ABOVE MITCHELL FALLS

In the Kimberley, lift off on a scenic chopper to the four-tier Mitchell Falls, then cool off in the emerald rock pools that crown the cascade. Explore ancient rock art tucked behind shimmering curtains of water. Roads? None. Memories? Off the charts.

TRUFFLE HUNTING WITH A MICHELIN MAESTRO

Join a Provençal truffle hunter (and his eager sniffer dog) in an oak forest, then roll up your sleeves in a farmhouse kitchen for a Michelinchef masterclass and long, trufflelaced lunch.

SEE GIANT TORTOISE IN THE GALÁPAGOS

Sail to Champion Islet in the Galapagos, where inquisitive sea lions and penguins frolic in the waters. Colour-burst reefs hide turtles, rays, reef sharks, and if you look up you’ll see Blue-footed boobies, pelicans and frigate birds. It’s nature’s own amusement park, minus the queues.

SLEEP UNDER ANTARCTIC STARS

On an Antarctica cruise, you could spend a night camping on the ice. Pitch your expedition-grade tent, listen to penguins chatter and wake to a polar sunrise few humans ever witness.

YOURSELF

Motu Mahana is yours for the day. Think floating rum bar, Tahitian earth-oven BBQ and lagoon massages beneath swaying palms, with no other visitors in sight.

A PRIVATE FLAMENCO FIESTA IN SUN-KISSED MALAGA

AzAmazing Evening swaps hushed concert halls for raw Andalusian passion: an exclusive, after-hours flamenco show staged just for guests in a historic Málaga venue, with gourmet tapas and chilled fino sherry flowing between sets. When the guitar’s final note fades and the dancers whirl offstage, you’ll swear Spain is pulsing through your veins.

HAND-CRAFT ITALY’S MOST FAMOUS PIZZA

Some Mediterranean sailings include a day trip from Naples into the hilltop village of Caiazzo where you can meet Italy’s most famous pizzaiolo, Franco Pepe. Wander local farms that grow Franco’s heirloom tomatoes and meet the buffalomozzarella artisans, then roll up your sleeves beside the maestro himself to stretch, top and wood-fire your own award-winning pie before an intimate tasting lunch in his private degustation room.

Try nabbing that table on land and you’re staring at a year-long wait-list. On this cruise, you walk straight in.
