Jan de Clerck y su esposa Caroline Jan de Clerck and his wife Caroline Un año más, Hoteles Andaluces Con Encanto saca a la luz su revista para que conozcan nuestros últimos proyectos y las noticias más relevantes que se han generado desde esta pequeña cadena hotelera.

En este número, el Hotel Jerez adquiere un protagonismo especial al cumplirse este año el 40 aniversario de su inauguración, allá en el año 1969.Una efeméride muy especial para mí, que recuerdo con algo de nostalgia, porque fue ese mismo año cuando me quedé hipnotizado por la belleza de la costa roteña y decidí quedarme definitivamente como Consejero-Delegado del Hotel Playa de la Luz. La inauguración del Hotel Jerez marcó un hito en la historia de la ciudad de Jerez, donde se convirtió en el hotel emblemático de la ciudad. Muchos años más tarde, nuestro grupo adquirió este hotel cuando se encontraba en un estado algo desmejorado, y después de grandes reformas conseguimos recuperar su categoría y su ambiente tan especial.

Actualmente, nuestros clientes podrán decidirse entre nuestros dos hoteles urbanos, el Hotel Jerez y el Guadacorte Park, en Los Barrios, que también este año celebra diez exitosos años de una vida prometedora, el Playa de la Luz y Duque de Nájera, en Rota, enmarcados en la categoría de hoteles vacacionales de playa, un hotel boutique como es el Villa Jerez, y nuestra gran apuesta, el Hotel Aguas de Algar, un complejo de carácter rural, que actualmente se encuentra en proyecto, y que se ubicará en una zona privilegiada de la sierra gaditana.

Haciendo balance de estos 40 años y pensando siempre en el futuro y en reforzar nuestros servicios apostando por las nuevas tecnologías y por la calidad humana y profesional de nuestros empleados, estoy convencido que al Grupo HACE que presido le quedan todavía muchos aniversarios que celebrar y compartir con todos nuestros clientes, los principales motores de nuestro día a día.

Another year has come and gone and Hoteles Andaluces Con Encanto is publishing its annual magazine to report on its latest projects and the most important news from this small hotel chain.

With this issue, the Hotel Jerez is marking a special celebration as it observes its 40th year of operation, which began in 1969. This is a very special anniversary for me, one that I recall with nostalgia, because that was the same year that I was captivated by the beauty of the Rota coast and decided to remain as Executive Director of the Hotel Playa de la Luz. The inauguration of the Hotel Jerez was a landmark in the history of the city of Jerez, and it became a hotel that is emblematic of the city. Many years later, our group acquired this hotel when it was not in the best condition and after major renovations it regained its distinction and its unique atmosphere.

Currently, our clients can choose between two urban hotels, the Hotel Jerez and the Guadacorte Park, in Los Barrios, which this year celebrates ten promising years, as well as the Playa de la Luz and Duque de Nájera in Rota, beach resort hotels of distinction, or the Villa Jerez, a boutique hotel. Our latest project, the Hotel Aguas de Algar, is a rural complex that is currently in the planning stages and will be located in the exclusive Sierra Cadiz area.

In reflecting on these 40 years and pondering the future, we are reinforcing our commitment to the latest technology and we continue to develop the professional potential of our employees, I am convinced that the HACE Group over which I have the pleasure of presiding has many anniversaries left to celebrate and to share with our clients, who are the centre of our hospitality world day in and day out

Fue el 20 de diciembre de 1969 cuando el Hotel Jerez, el primer gran hotel de la ciudad abrió sus puertas a los jerezanos y jerezanas y a los visitantes. Una efemérides que se cierra en festividad al cumplir 40 años de historia. Durante este tiempo este establecimiento ha sido un estandarte para la ciudad y un referente social que ha alcanzado importantes cotas de protagonismo en la vida local y ha dejado un marchamo de calidad propio en el sector turístico andaluz.

Pensar en el Hotel Jerez ha sido siempre en el ideario colectivo sinónimo de calidad, exquisitez y buen gusto, amén de confortabilidad y hospitalidad cuidada al detalle. Pero sobre todo este establecimiento, propiedad ahora junto al Hotel Villa Jerez de la cadena HACE, ha sido un escenario privilegiado de los grandes acontecimientos que ha vivido Jerez: desde la Feria con los premios taurinos, a los pregones de Semana Santa pasando más recientemente el GP de España de Motociclismo sin olvidar los acontecimientos personales de cientos de familias que han escogido sus instalaciones para conmemorar sus eventos privados.

Esto es sin duda un factor clave para la elección por parte del visitante, que ha sentido y siente al Hotel Jerez como algo suyo; un hospedaje casi igualable al de sentirse en casa. Como alcaldesa de la ciudad saludo a los visitantes y clientes que siguen apostando por este hotel para su alojamiento en una ciudad repleta de encantos y atractivos turísticos que tienen como denominador común la excelencia: desde nuestro rico patrimonio histórico-artístico, pasando por la Real Escuela de Arte Ecuestre o El Museo de Enganches, los atractivos de los Museos de la Atalaya, nuestras bodegas o un buen número de infraestructuras de carácter social y deportivo que hacen de Jerez un sitio único para visitar y para invertir.

Desde el Gobierno local felicito sinceramente a la cadena Hoteles Andaluces con Encanto y como siempre me pongo a su disposición para seguir contribuyendo al enaltecimiento de una empresa hostelera de sello internacional y con solera jerezana. Felicidades.

On December 20, 1969 the Hotel Jerez, the first grand hotel in the city, opened its doors to Jerez residents and visitors. Now it is time to celebrate 40 years of its history. During this time this establishment has been a standard for the city and a social reference point that has achieved heights of prominence in local life and made its mark on the quality of tourism services in Andalusia.

The Hotel Jerez has always been synonymous with quality, exquisiteness and good taste, as well as comfort and hospitality down to the last detail. But above all this establishment, which along with the Hotel Villa Jerez is now part of the HACE chain, has been a prominent stage for great events that have occurred in Jerez: from the Fair with the Annual Bullfighting Awards, to the Holy Week street markets and most recently the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix. And let’s not forget the personal events of hundreds of families who have used its facilities to commemorate their families’ landmark moments.

This is doubtless a key factor in its selection by visitors, who experience the Hotel Jerez as their own, with accommodations that make one feel right at home. As mayor of the city, I send greetings to visitors and clients who continue to choose this hotel for their lodgings in a city full of tourist charms and attractions that all share the excellence of our rich historical and artistic legacy. Exemplifying this legacy are the Royal School of Equestrian Art or the Horse Carriage Museum, the attractions of the Atalaya Museums, our bodegas and a wide array of social and sports facilities that make Jerez a unique location for visiting and for investment.

On behalf of our local Government I send sincere congratulations to the Hoteles Andaluces con Encanto chain and I take delight in joining the chorus of praise for this internationally known hospitality company, which is uniquely Jerezana.

Las ciudades y sus hoteles forman dúos inseparables que se influencian y se proyectan mutuamente.

Eso es, precisamente, lo que sucede entre Jerez de la Frontera y el Hotel Jerez desde hace cuarenta años: el confort, la elegancia, el bien hacer y un sentido amable de la hospitalidad corren parejos tanto por el entramado urbano como por las dependencias hoteleras. All well-known cities throughout the world have landmark hotels, mythical establishments that are mentioned in prestigious guidebooks and magazines and that are known for the quality of their guests. The cities and their hotels form an inseparable pair that are mutually influenced and planned. That is precisely what happened between Jerez de la Frontera and the Hotel Jerez over the past forty years: comfort, elegance, expertise and a friendly feeling of hospitality runs through the city itself and its hotels. Jerez, capital of three worlds – of the horse, wine and flamenco – has in this fine hotel a palace in which it can take pride and share with Andalusia and all of Spain. Because of this, on this 40th anniversary we all offer our congratulations.

With these lines I wish to send my congratulations to one of the hotel establishments that is most emblematic of our province, the Hotel Jerez. This hotel, which has been such a pioneer in the field, represents a genuine standard of quality and service for its clients. I know that it has received numerous distinctions and much recognition throughout its existence but none has been as important as the confidence of its patrons. This is why it is one of the most popular hotels in the area. The Hotel Jerez, a member of the HACE (Hoteles Andaluces con Encanto) Group has, year after year, adapted to the public’s needs, offering the most modern services. I just want to reiterate my most profound congratulations and good wishes for your having gained a place in the highest ranks of the hotel sector in our province.

Hotel Jerez Cuarenta años para el recuerdo Diciembre de 1969. Los periódicos de la época lo anunciaban como un verdadero acontecimiento: “El sábado, inauguración oficial del Hotel Jerez”, titulaba en su sección “Jerez cada día” La Voz del Sur, el diario provincial del movimiento. Se trataba de uno de los eventos más importantes del año en la ciudad, y a la cita no podía faltar el entonces ministro de Información y Turismo, Alfredo Sánchez Bella, así como el alcalde de Jerez, Primo de Rivera, acompañado de autoridades como el ex alcalde, Álvaro Domecq, y diversas personalidades de la vida social más relevantes de aquel momento.

December, 1969. The newspapers of that time announced it as a true event: “On Saturday, the official inauguration of the Hotel Jerez,” read the headline in the “Jerez every day” section of the La Voz del Sur, the provincial daily of the time. It described one of the city’s most important events of the year, attended by then Minister of Information and Tourism, Alfredo Sánchez Bella, as well as the mayor of Jerez, Prino de Rivera, accompanied by authorities such as former mayor Álvaro Domecq and various prominent personalities from the social world of that time.

Era la cita del día y por ello la agenda de los periódicos llevaban varias jornadas haciendo reseñas del ambicioso proyecto “emplazado en la zona más bella de la ciudad”, como era y continúa siendo la avenida Alcalde Álvaro Domecq, cuyas obras arrancaron en septiembre del 68 hasta hacerlo realidad un año más tarde. Había tanta expectación que en la víspera de la inauguración, el Consejo de Administración de la Empresa Nacional de Turismo, explotadora y constructora del hotel, encabezado por su gerente, Rafael Muñoz, ofreció un almuerzo al alcalde, que sirvió como preapertura de las nuevas instalaciones. Unas instalaciones con las últimas comodidades de la época que echaban a andar con 64 habitaciones “con baño, ducha y teléfono” y aire acondicionado “en habitaciones y salones”, restaurante y bar americano, piscina y jardín.

It was the event of the day and so various newspapers carried summaries of the ambitious project “located in the most beautiful area of the city,” how it was an continued being the avenue named for Mayor Álvaro Domecq, and how work on the hotel had begun in September 1968 and was completed a year later. There had been such excitement that on the eve of the opening, the Board of Directors of the National Tourism Company, the hotel’s developer and builder, headed by its manager, Rafael Muñoz, offered lunch to the mayor and it was served prior to the opening. Facilities with the latest comforts of the time included 64 rooms “with bath, shower and telephone” and air-conditioning “in rooms and meeting rooms,” restaurant and American bar, pool and garden.

HOTEL JEREZ Estas dependencias que serían reformadas en 1996, pasando a contar con 129 habitaciones, cuando el hotel fue ampliado en 2001, suites de altísimo confort y gran espacio, piscina climatizada y con luz natural junto a los jardines, gimnasio y saunas. Por aquel entonces el sueño del Grupo HACE ya era una realidad. Coincidiendo con la inauguración del Hotel Jerez, la ciudad empezaba a despuntar en el ámbito turístico y en muy pocos años el edificio turístico de la avenida Álvaro Domecq se convertiría en un punto de apoyo importante y en todo un referente del sector, en el que se alojaron las personalidades más destacadas de la época, desde políticos, artistas, deportistas, como sigue ocurriendo en la actualidad.

Apenas había transcurrido una década desde que el Hotel Jerez empezara su andadura y el Ayuntamiento, liderado entonces por un jovencísimo Pedro Pacheco, alcalde de la ciudad, aprobó en pleno entregar la Medalla de Oro de la ciudad por su décimo aniversario “y porque nunca en tan poco tiempo se ha hecho tanto”, en relación a la imagen que en todo ese tiempo había proyectado el hotel del turismo local. Con motivo de esta efeméride, los salones del hotel acogieron una sesión plenaria a la que además de los miembros de la Corporación municipal, también acudieron el gobernador civil de la provincia, José María Sanz Pastor, el presidente de Entursa, Luis García Fernández, así como el vicepresidente de la Empresa Nacional de Turismo, Gerardo

The buildings were remodeled in 1996, being the hotel expanded to 129 rooms in 2001, with large spacious suites, heated pool and natural light, along with the gardens, gymnasium and saunas. That is when the dream of the HACE Group became a reality. With the launch of the Hotel Jerez, it began to have an impact on the tourism environment and in a few years the visitor magnet on Álvaro Domecq avenue became an important support and a reference point for the tourism sector. The hotel attracted the most outstanding personalities of the time, from politicians to artists and sports figures, and that is still true today.

Hardly a decade had gone by since the Hotel Jerez opened when the City Government, led at that time by the city’s youthful mayor, Pedro Pacheco, approved the awarding of the city’s Gold Medal for its tenth anniversary “and because never has so much been done in so little time,” to project a favourable image of local tourism. In observance of this anniversary, the hotel’s meeting rooms hosted a plenary session that attracted members of the city

HOTEL JEREZ Taboada. Entre aplausos, García Fernández recibía la Medalla de Oro, y hacía entrega a su vez de una placa conmemorativa al alcalde de la ciudad. Ese mismo año, el hotel sería objeto de distintos reconocimientos, entre los que destacó también la placa al Mérito Turístico, en la categoría de Plata, concedida por el Ministerio de Información y Turismo.

A partir de ahí el resto vendría solo. The Royal School of Equestrian Art, one of the “must see” tourist attractions in Jerez de la Frontera, was founded for the purpose of conserving, selecting and improving the Andalusian horse breed. Tourists can choose from many shows to enjoy, but without a doubt the show, “How the Andalusian Horses Dance” is an authentic equestrian ballet. Its choreography is based on Classic and Vaquera Dressage reprises, with quintessentially Spanish music and outfits typical of the 18th century.

El programa “Al Primer Toque”, de Onda Cero, congregó en la noche del pasado miércoles 3 de junio a más un centenar de aficionados xerecistas en el Salón Alcázar del Hotel Jerez con motivo de la realización del espacio deportivo en tierras jerezanas. La cita contó con la participación de varios miembros de la entidad xerecista, como el técnico azulino, Esteban Vigo, el presidente de la entidad, Carlos Osma, el presidente de honor, Rafael Verdú, el director deportivo Miguel Ángel Rondán junto a los futbolistas Mario Bermejo, Antoñito y Michel, así como decenas de aficionados que aprovecharon la oportundidad para fotografiar a los nuevos jugadores de Primera División.

El programa deportivo de las noches de Onda Cero a nivel nacional, que se emitió de 0.00 a 1.30 horas de la mano de su director, Ángel Rodríguez, conocido también por presentar la información deportiva en el espacio Noticias 1 de Antena 3 Televisión, eligió nuestro hotel para realizar una edición especial que se caracterizó por el buen ambiente con motivo del ascenso histórico del equipo azulino a la Primera División. “Al Primer toque” (First Touch) program of Onda Cero, came together the night of June 3 as more than a hundred Xerez fans congregated in the Alcázar Meeting Room of the Hotel Jerez to create a sporting space in Jerez territory. Various members of the Xerez organization were in attendance, including Azulino coach Esteban Vigo; the club’s president, Carlos Osma; the honorary president, Rafael Verdú; sports director Miguel Ángel Rondán together with players Mario Bermejo, Antoñito and Michel, as well as dozens of aficionados who took advantage of the opportunity to photograph the new First Division players.

The nightly Onda Cero sports program is broadcast nationally from midnight to 1.30 a.m. hosted by Ángel Rodríguez, who is also well known as a sports broadcaster on the Noticias 1 program on Antena 3 Television. He chose our hotel to broadcast a special edition full of good cheer and excitement to celebrate the historic rise of the Azulino team to the First Division. El Hotel Jerez fue elegido el pasado 19 de mayo, en el marco de su 40 aniversario, como sede de la X Asamblea Anual de la Asociación Provincial de Hoteles. El acto, que comenzó con la presentación de un informe por parte del presidente del colectivo, Antonio Real, contó con la presencia del presidente de Horeca, Antonio de María, la directora general de Promoción y Comercialización de la Consejería de Turismo de la Junta de Andalucía, Montserrat Reyes, y el delegado provincial de esta misma consejería, José María Reguera y la alcaldesa, Pilar Sánchez.

El Hotel Playa de La Luz de Rota celebró el pasado 4 de junio la inauguración del bar La Gaviota, que ha sido objeto de una remodelación en un tiempo record de tres meses. Las instalaciones fueron bendecidas por Juan González Lagomazzini en un acto que contó con la presencia del presidente de HACE, Jan De Clerck, el alcalde de Rota, Lorenzo Sánchez Alonso, el delegado provincial de Comercio, Turismo y Deporte, José María Reguera, el consejero delegado de HACE, Stefaan De Clerck y el director del Hotel Playa de la Luz, Juan Sañudo.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Los hoteles adquieren cantidades ingentes de productos, en particular artículos para limpiar y lavar la ropa, alimentos y bebida, equipos, vehículos, material de oficina, ropa de cama y productos de tocador para los baños de los huéspedes. Esos productos pueden tener un impacto ambiental negativo a lo largo de la cadena de fabricación, distribución, utilización y eliminación. Asimismo, pueden incidir nocivamente en el ámbito social y las asociaciones hoteleras pueden promover mejoras ambientales y sociales en la fabricación y producción. Las decisiones relativas a los productos que se adquieren repercuten, asimismo, en los niveles de basura que produce un hotel y en la contaminación potencial del aire, el agua y el suelo a nivel local como consecuencia de la utilización y la eliminación de esos productos.

Hotels acquire countless products, many for cleaning and washing clothes, as well as food and drink, equipment, vehicles, office supplies, bed linens and toiletry items for guest baths. These products can have a negative environmental impact throughout the chain of manufacture, distribution, use and disposal. They can also be damaging to the social environment. Hotel associations can promote environmental and social health in manufacturing and production. Decisions hotels make regarding the products they buy have repercussions, in the amount of waste that a hotel produces and in potential contamination of the air, water and soil in a particular location as a consequence of the use and disposal of those products.

- Compramos productos y materiales locales que requieran menos trasporte, envasado y almacenamiento y permitan fortalecer las relaciones con la comunidad y aumentar el prestigio del establecimiento.

Por ejemplo, potenciamos el uso de productos naturales, frescos y de la temporada.

I had to tell you that yours is the best place to be when I am away from home. Why? It has nothing to do with being a hotel with excellent views, location, prestige, with luxury accommodations, etc. No, no, it has nothing to do with these characteristics.

For me, what is wonderful is the employees. From the first people that I met when I left my room, normally cleaning and reception people, the breakfast waiters, to the last people I saw at night, like the cafeteria and reception personnel, all, without exception, offered a contagious smile.

“Bienvenido a Campo Abierto, un resumen de la vida del toro bravo, el caballo y los hombres criadores”. Pocas veces el mensaje que una persona capta a través de un megáfono es capaz de transmitir tanta curiosidad, emoción y expectación a la vez.

Pero no solo una narrativa pausada y didáctica te hace sentir como en casa, te sumerge durante 90 minutos en una clase en directo teórica y práctica a la vez sobre este mundo que tantos secretos esconde para algunos, que el ambiente que se respira en todo momento nunca esté fuera de contexto también es culpa, en parte, de la belleza salvaje de la finca Los Alburejos, en la carretera de Medina, propiedad de la familia Domecq, que desde hace un año recrea cada día un espectáculo natural como la vida misma, como la vida de un toro bravo desde que nace hasta que abandona la dehesa, y el papel que en todo este proceso juegan el caballo y los hombres criadores. De otro modo, nunca quedaría más claro.

Los minutos antes de esta clase magistral transcurren en los accesos a la finca. Queda poco tiempo. El público que tantas veces aplaudirá se dispone a bajar de unos autobuses. En la mayoría de los casos, se trata de grupos (familias, jubilados, extranjeros) a los que se les dedica un saludo previo en las gradas de la plaza portátil que ellos vuelven a responder con aplausos antes de que comience el espectáculo.

Y por fin llega el momento. Los vaqueros y los jinetes empiezan a divisarse a lo lejos. Galopan auspiciados por los ritmos del oeste. Le siguen un lote de vacas perfectamente seleccionadas con el semental y sus becerros. Son la “primera familia” del toro bravo. Entre los jinetes está él, Álvaro Domecq Romero, acompañado siempre por sus sobrinos dentro y fuera del ruedo. Entre ellos llama especialmente la atención la labor de Pedro, un sobrino nieto quien, con apenas cinco años, monta a caballo con la soltura de veinte. Viniendo de la saga de esta mítica familia jerezana, su participación en

la mayoría de las escenas de la vida del toro promete y ya deja entrever los atisbos de una maestría propia de sus predecesores. Lo lleva en la sangre. Sólo hay que ver la naturalidad con la que llama una a una a las madres para separarla de las crías en el llamado destete, ante la atenta mirada de los espectadores, que ya con todas las madres fuera del ruedo presencian otra de las estampas más bellas cuando la función acaba y las crías se reencuentran con ellas a la salida.

Todas marchan “a su entorno natural”, es decir, “a Campo Abierto”, la frase que más se repetirá en este teatro en directo de la vida del toro, entre los aplausos y los gritos de admiración de los presentes.

Pero esto no acaba aquí, todavía queda mucho por delante. El caballo de pura raza española nunca se descuida, y más en un proyecto dirigido por Álvaro Domecq y su familia. Llega el momento de disfrutar de una exhibición de doma de alta escuela con unos ejemplares elegidos a la perfección al igual que la música. Acto seguido, hace su aparición una espectacular yegua que los extranjeros admiran con un Oh my God, mientras que el resto aplaude otra vez con cámara en mano para premiar la exhibición.

La doma vaquera tampoco se descuida en este escenario, con unos jinetes entregados y apasionados con lo que hacen desde el primer minuto de su aparición. Las instantáneas por tanto, se convierten casi en obligadas, una vez que tienes el privilegio de poner el pie en Los Alburejos y disfrutar del paisaje natural en estado puro. Nunca una propuesta de turismo rural, ecuestre y taurino dio un paso más y te hizo disfrutar con los cinco sentidos de un espectáculo como éste, donde el visitante verá la belleza natural de la dehesa, y una sucesión de distintas escenas de la vida del toro bravo, los caballos, los bueyes, vacas y demás animales del sistema ecológico del toro bravo; Oirá el canto de los pajaros, el mugir de

los toros y vacas, el relincho de los potros, el sonido de los cencerros y el silencio del campo; olerás el aroma de la tierra mojada, de las hierbas secas; sentirás en tu piel la caricia del viento y degustará el buen vino de Jerez entre amigos. Y es que Álvaro Domecq ha cuidado hasta el último detalle este proyecto, ya que en un receso de apenas 10 minutos, los asistentes pueden tomar una buena tapa andaluza, acompañada por un buen caldo o lo que se precie o adquirir todo tipo de souvenirs, aunque visto lo visto, será difícil que se olviden de la estampa que ha quedado en sus retinas.

“Welcome to A Campo Abierto, a summary of the life of the fierce bull, the horse and the breeders.” Rarely is the voice of a person through a microphone able to convey such curiosity, emotion and expectation at the same time. It is not just a slow and informative narrative that makes you feel right at home. For 90 minutes it immerses you in a theoretical and practical class about this world of the bull that has so many hidden secrets. The atmosphere is the perfect context: the wild beauty of Los Alburejos on the Medina highway, owned by the Domecq family. For the past year, every day they have recreated a show as natural as life itself, depicting the life of the fierce bull, from the time it is born until it is set loose in the pasture, and the role played in this process by the horse and the breeders. It has

never been shown more clearly.

The opening moments take place in the entrances to the ranch. The public that will applaud so many times is eager to get off the buses. Most of them are in groups (families, retired, foreigners) and as they sit in the grandstand of the portable plaza they respond with applause to the “Welcome” prior to the start of the show.

At last comes the moment. The vaqueros (Cawboys) and horsemen began the split off in the distance. The gallop to the rhythms of the west. Next comes a group of perfectly selected cows with the stud and the young bulls. They are the “first family” of the fierce bull. Among the riders is Álvaro Domecq Romero, always accompanied by his nephews inside and outside the ring. Of special interest is Pedro, a grand-nephew barely five years old, who mounts a horse with the ease of a twenty-year-old. Living the saga of this mythical Jerez family, his participation in the majority of scenes in The Life of the Bull Show suggests and reveals the mastery of his predecessors. It runs in the blood. One need only see the naturalness with which he calls one by one to

the mothers to separate them from the weaning calves before the intent gaze of the spectators. Now with the all the mothers outside the ring comes one of the prettiest pictures, when the show ends and the young bulls are reunited with their mothers at the exit.

They all head for “their natural environment,” that is, "A Campo Abierto" ("To the Open Fields"), the prhasethat will be repeated in this live presentation about the life of the bull, amid the applause and cries of admiration of those present.

But that is not the end. There is still more to come. The thoroughbred Spanish racehorse is not forgotten, especially in a show directed by Álvaro Domecq and his family. The moment arrives to enjoy an alta escuela doma exhibition with specimens chosen for their perfection that equals that of the music. In the second act a spectacular mare appears that the foreigners admire with cries of “Oh my God,” while the rest of the audience applauds again, while snapping photographs.

ming it from the moment of their appearance. Taking photographs is nearly mandatory once you have the privilege of setting foot in Los Alburejos and enjoying the natural landscape in its purest state. Never has there been a rural, equestrian and taurino site that offers so much for the five senses as this show does. The visitor can witness the natural beauty of the pasture and a succession of various scenes from the life of

the fierce bull, the horses, the oxen, cows and other animals in the ecological system of the fighting bull. You will hear the song of the birds, the bellowing of the bulls and cows, the whinnying of the colts, the sound of the cow-bells and silence of the field. You savour the aromas of damp earth and dry herbs. You will feel the caress of the wind and enjoy the great wines of Jerez among friends.

“Jerez siempre me ha tratado muy bien” “Jerez has always treated me very well” Por / By: Rocio Alfaro Fotografía / Photography: Garrido A sus 69 años, Álvaro Domecq Romero, Alvarito para sus amigos, el maestro por excelencia del rejoneo que tan bien heredó de su padre, el siempre recordado Álvaro Domecq, no sabe lo que es pasar un día sin montar a caballo y alejado de los asuntos de su ganadería Torrestrella. Humilde, crítico con el estado actual de la Real Escuela de Arte Ecuestre por la que tanto luchó y con una memoria de infarto -es capaz de recordar escrupulosamente las 102 veces que toreó en la Plaza de Méjico- en estos momentos se muestra más ilusionado que nunca con su proyecto “A Campo abierto” de su finca de Los Alburejos, en el que está implicada toda su familia, y con la labor que están haciendo sus caballos en Budapest y otros puntos de Europa. Su trayectoria y la de su padre siempre estarán vinculadas con el Hotel Jerez.

-Alvaro, ¿qué le pasa por la cabeza si le hablo de septiembre de 1959?

-Esa fue la primera corrida que toreé en Ronda y después a los dos días estuve en Jerez en una corrida que fue para mí muy especial, porque le corté el rabo a un toro de Juan Pedro.

Domecq. Son dos fechas muy impresionantes para mí.

-Dicen que la Plaza de las Ventas es una de las que más imponen. ¿Recuerda con especial ilusión su presentación en el coso madrileño en el 62 o se queda con Jerez?

-Mejor Jerez, ¿no? Claro que sí.

-Después de una carrera intensa en la que destaca como rejoneador, torero y ganadero, en el 85 Álvaro Domecq se despide oficialmente de los ruedos, y digo oficial, porque oficiosamente nunca se ha ido.

-Bueno, después toreé unas corridas para dar la alternativa en Madrid y en Jerez a mi sobrino, y nada, ha sido toda una vida metida en el caballo y en el toro, que es donde aprendí mucho y donde lo pasé muy bien, la verdad.

-¿Qué otros festejos guardará siempre en su memoria además de su debut?

-Bueno he tenido corridas muy importantes, he tenido la suerte de torear en Campo Pequeño en Portugal, donde hay mucho ambiente, en Barcelona, donde he toreado 120 veces, después en la Plaza Méjico, aparte de Madrid y Sevilla, como es lógico, en Perú, Ecuador, Colombia...Todo esto te da mucha vida.

-Dicen los expertos que el rejoneo está un poco en deuda con usted, por su maestría, su nobleza con los toros.

-No hombre, tuve una gran época, en la que toreaba todos los días. Además de que son épocas, el toro salía entonces más fuerte y más agresivo y te hacía sentirte muy torero cuando las cosas salían bien.

-También aseguran que tenía otra sabiduría, otra forma de tratar al toro y hasta de castigarlo...

-Era un poco la idea de que cada época, cada circunstancia, y el

-Alvaro, what comes into your mind when you think about September, 1959?

- That was the first corrida that I fought in Ronda. Two days later I was in Jerez in a corrida that was very special for me, because I cut the tail of a bull that belonged to Juan Pedro Domecq. These were two very memorable events for me.

- They say that the Plaza de las Ventas is one of the most impressive. Do you recall with particular excitement your appearance in the Madrid arena in 1962 or more so Jerez?

-Better Jerez, no? Of course.

- After an intense career in which he succeeded as a rejoneador, torero and rancher, in 1985 Álvaro Domecq officially retired from the rings, and I say officially, because he never has done it.

- Well, I fought a few corridas for a change in Madrid and in Jerez with my nephew. Mine has been a life involved with horses and the bulls, where I learned a lot and I have truly have enjoyed myself.

-What other occasions stand out in your memory besides your debut?

- I have had some very important corridas. I have had the luck to fight in Campo Pequeño in Portugal, a great atmosphere; in Barcelona, where I have fought 120 times, later in the Plaza Mexico, besides Madrid and Seville, which is logical, and in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. All of that makes for a great life.

- The experts say that the rejoneo has in debt to you, due to your mastery, your nobility with the bulls.

- No, I had a great era, in which I was fighting every day. In addition, the bulls grew stronger and more aggressive and that makes you feel like a real bullfighter when things go well.

- They also say that you had a certain wisdom, another way of treating the bull, including punishing it…

toro que me tocó a mí. Además, hicimos muy bien el rejoneo cuando toreamos con Los Peralta. Por aquel entonces, se hicieron las corridas de rejoneo, que le dieron un impulso muy grande al caballo en todo el mundo.

-¿Con qué faceta se queda, con la de torero, rejoneador o la de ganadero?

-Es que son todas tan bonitas que con una sola no me puedo quedar, me tengo que quedar con más de una.

-¿La que más satisfacciones le ha dado?

-Las tres quizás: el campo, el rejoneo y la escuela quizás, porque era muy difícil.

-¿Qué recuerdos guarda de su etapa en la Real Escuela de Arte Ecuestre?

-La Real Escuela es una gran y maravillosa obra por la que yo luché 25 años, y de la que desgraciadamente tuve que coger la puerta. No es por nada, pero creo que ha perdido, porque la categoría que tenían los caballos antes, no la tienen ahora.

Quizás, el sentido de la equitación que yo tanto aprendí, tampoco lo tiene ahora. Está muy bonito, es un grandioso monumento, pero quizás el contenido tendrían que mejorarlo.

-¿Con “A campo abierto” quizás se ha quitado la espinita?

-Para nada, porque yo después de aquello he hecho y estoy haciendo muchas cosas. He tenido el honor de ir a la Escuela de Viena, donde me hicieron un homenaje y donde no entraba el caballo español hacía muchos siglos, y para mí eso ha sido un honor. En Europa, donde tengo a todos mis caballos, también tengo un buen cartel. Son de gran calidad, y ahora también tengo una buena camada de potros, que van a a ser unos grandes famosos.

-¿Cuándo ha sido la última vez que ha presenciado un espectáculo ecuestre en la Real Escuela?

-Hace poco fui por un homenaje a un amigo. Aquello (por la Real Escuela) es muy bonito, muy grandioso, pero los jinetes se quejan de que no tienen la calidad de caballos que tenían cuando yo estaba.

-Por el público que acude cada semana a su finca de Los Alburejos para presenciar su espectáculo A campo Abierto, debe estar contento por el balance.

-Bueno, esto es una idea nueva, donde se ve todo lo que se trabaja aquí en el campo, con el toro y también con el caballo, pero realmente es más con el primero. Aquí (por la finca) tenemos todo lo que se necesita en el campo y para mí es un honor poderlo enseñar.

-¿De quién surgió el nombre de A Campo Abierto?

-Bueno aquí somos muchos. Tengo una familia muy grande y

- Each era, each circumstance and each bull affected me. We did very well with the rejoneo when we were fighting with the Peraltas. Back then there were rejoneo corridas that emphasized the role of the horse throughout the world.

- Which aspect of your life is your favourite, as torero, rejoneador or rancher?

- I can’t say, because I have enjoyed them all. I could not do just one.

- Which gave you the most satisfaction?

- Perhaps all three: the countryside, the rejoneo and perhaps the school, because it was very difficult.

- What memories do you have about your period with the Royal School of Equestrian Art? - The Royal School is a great and marvellous project for which I struggled for 25 years and which unfortunately I had to leave. I did not leave for nothing. I believe that it has lost something because the horses they had before, they do not have now. Perhaps the sense of horsemanship that I learned, they do not have either. It is very beautiful, it is a great monument, but perhaps the content had to improve.

-And with “A Campo Abierto” you have perhaps gotten over that painful decision?

- It keeps me busy. Since that experience I have done and I am doing many things. I had the honour of going to the Vienna School, where they honoured me and where they had not had the Spanish horse for many centuries. For me that has been an honour. In Europe, where I have all my horses, I also have a good reputation. They are of the highest quality and I also have a good number of colts, some of which will be very famous.

- When was the last time you attended an equestrian show at the Royal School?

- Not too long ago I attended a tribute for a friend. The Royal School is very pretty and grand, but the riders complain that they do not have horses of the quality they had when I was there.

- You should be happy, on balance, given the crowds that come to your Los Alburejos ranch to attend your show.

- Sure, that’s a new idea, to let people see everything that happens in the countryside with the bull and the horse, but really the emphasis is on the former. Here (at the ranch) we have all that we need in the country and for me it is an honour to be able to share this knowledge.

- Who came up with the name A Campo Abierto (“To the Open Countryside”)?

todos pensamos en cosas de estas. Fue un poco toda la familia, porque como has visto, ahí trabajamos todos: los mayores, los medianos y los niños. Todo el mundo colabora, además de la gente de aquí del campo, que sabe mucho de todo lo que hacemos porque hace falta gente para manejar las vacas, los toros y los bueyes.

-¿Este proyecto venía de lejos? ¿Siempre lo tuvo en mente?

-Juan Paneda me decía que siempre la gente preguntaba y que sería bonito montar algo así. Y un día decidimos ponerlo en marcha. A lo mejor después habrá que cambiarlo, pero ahora mismo a la gente le gusta mucho.

-¿Cuántos turistas han pasado por aquí ya? ¿Habrá perdido la cuenta?

-No lo sé, pero a mí me divierte mucho. Siempre he estado rodeado de gente, y más en la plaza, y aquí seguimos rodeados de gente.

-¿Echa de menos más implicación por parte de la gente de su tierra de la cultura del campo y del caballo?

-Aquí vienen personas de todos los alrededores, pero también nos visitan muchos extranjeros, que son los que más preguntan porque les choca mucho todo.

-¿Quizás vienen más ellos que la gente de la tierra?

-No creas, yo creo que poco, mitad y mitad.

-¿Seguirá sorprendiendo con nuevos proyectos como éste?

-Bueno, ahora tengo un proyecto muy bonito en Budapest, donde me encontré una escuela hundida que se creó en 1700.

La hundieron cuando la Segunda Guerra Mundial y ahora tengo allí mis caballos y a unas alumnas que han estado aquí.

La mayoría son chicas que montan muy bien, y vamos a presentar un espectáculo enseguida. Les mandé unos caballos fantásticos y estamos todos con mucha ilusión -¿Cómo lleva que con el paso de los años siempre vaya a seguir siendo Alvarito, el hijo de Don Álvaro?

-Me parece muy bien, lo que hace falta es que también el cuerpo aguante joven para que pueda seguir funcionando.

-¿Jerez está en deuda con usted?

-No, ni hablar, Jerez siempre me ha tratado muy bien, yo tengo muchos amigos y toda la gente me conoce, y para mí el que estaba en deuda con Jerez era yo y quizás con lo que yo he hecho estamos ya muy lejos.

-¿Cree que las gradas en las que nos encontamos ahora mismo de Los Alburejos a campo abierto podrían ser algún día otra Real Escuela?

No hay que olvidar que la Real Escuela surgió de una carpa...

-Hombre no sé, todo esto funciona y no cabe duda de que va a seguir funcionando.

- Well, there are many of us. I have a very large family and we all think about things like this. It was really the family, because as you have seen, we work together: the older people, the middle-aged and the children. Everyone cooperates, along with the country people, who know a lot about what we are doing because people are needed to handle the cows, the bulls and the calves.

- Has this project been in the works for a while? Have you always had it in mind?

-Juan Paneda told me that people were always asking for it and saying it would be good to do something like this. Then one day we decided to do it. We might have to change it later, but right now the people are enjoying it a lot.

- How many tourists have come to it? Have you lost count?

- I don’t know, but for me it has been a lot of fun. I have always been surrounded by people, especially in the bull rings, and here we continue to surrounded by people - At least it has brought about greater involvement by your countrymen in the culture of the countryside and the horse?

- People from the surrounding areas come here, but many foreigners also come and they are the ones who ask why there are so many collisions.

- Do more foreigners than Spanish people come to visit?

- I don’t think so, I think it’s more like half and half.

- Will you keep surprising us with new projects like this?

- I have a good project right now in Budapest, where I found a failed school that was founded in 1700. It was closed during the Second World War and now I have my horses and some students who have been there. The majority are girls who ride very well and we will soon present a show. I sent them some fantastic horses and we are all very excited.

- How does it feel to still be Alvarito after all these years, the son of Don Álvaro?

- It seems fine, what I miss is having a young body so I could keep doing the things I used to do.

- Is Jerez in your debt?

- No, don’t say that. Jerez has always treated me well. I have many friends and everyone knows me and for that I am in debt to Jerez and with what I have done, perhaps we’re are close to even.

- Do you think that the grandstands in the open fields of Los Alburejos might someday become another Royal School? Bearing in mind that the Royal School started in a tent? . . .

-I don’t know. Everything is working and undoubtedly it will continue to work.

The building was designed in 1998, with the latest cooking conveniences in its kitchens and varied decor and capacity throughout. Carmen Cerpa trabaja desde hace 29 años para la empresa Hotel Playa de la Luz, S.A. y durante los últimos nueve años desempeña el puesto de responsable del restaurante buffet en el Hotel Duque de Nájera, dedicando a los cliente una atención personalizada. De Carmen habría que destacar su gran profesionalidad, buen hacer, amabilidad y su preocupación por la satisfacción de todos los clientes que nos visitan.

Carmen Cerpa has worked for the Hotel Playa de la Luz S.A. company for 29 years and for the past nine years she has been responsible for the restaurant buffet in the Hotel Duque de Nájera, dedicating her personal attention to the customers. Carmen’s outstanding qualities are her great personality, her good work, her friendliness and her concern with satisfying every client who visits.

Juan es el trabajador con más antigüedad de la empresa pues, a pesar de incorporarse con la plantilla que inauguró el hotel Guadacorte Park en el año 1999 tras una reforma total, formó parte del personal del antiguo hotel Guadacorte desde el año 1.973. En la foto tiene de fondo una Araucaria (monkey Tree), pues según él, son los más antiguos del lugar…Respetado y apreciado por todos sus compañeros, pertenece al comité de empresa desde su creación, siendo su labor muy positivamente valorada por ellos y por la dirección del hotel. Este año es su deseo prejubilarse y disfrutar más de su tiempo libre. Gracias Juan por todos tus años de dedicación y por tu profesionalidad.

Juan is the senior employee in the company, having been with the Guadacorte Park hotel through its 1999 remodelling after joining the staff of the old Guadacorte hotel in 1973. In the photo he is standing under a Monkey Tree (Araucaria), which, according to him, is the oldest tree on the premises. He is respected and appreciated by all his co-workers and he has belonged to the workers’ committee since its founding; his work is highly valued by the employees and the hotel’s management. This year he is taking early retirement so he can enjoy his free time. Thank you, Juan, for all your years of dedication and professionalism.

Mª de los Reyes Coto Valle, inició su carrera en el Hotel Jerez & SPA realizando las prácticas de los estudios de la diplomatura de Turismo en el año 2001 en nuestro departamento de recepción, al que se incorporaría como profesional de forma definitiva en el verano de 2002. Sus buenas aptitudes la han llevado a colaborar con la dirección realizando suplencias durante las bajas de maternidad de sus compañeras en los puestos de adjunta a dirección y jefa de reservas, realizando muy satisfactoriamente las labores de responsable del departamento de reservas desde el año 2007.

Desde la dirección queremos darle las gracias por estar siempre disponible, adaptarse a todos los puestos de trabajo por los que ha pasado y siempre con la mejor de las sonrisas.

Maria de los Reyes Coto Valle began her career at the Hotel Jerez & SPA while doing work practice toward her degree in Tourism in 2001 in our reception department. She joined the staff as a full-time professional in 2002. Her positive attitude has resulted in her working with management filling in during her co-workers’ maternity leaves in management-related positions and reservations supervisor, a role that she has filled since 2007. On behalf of the management, we wish to thank you for always being available, adapting to so many job positions and always having a smile.

Jesús se unió a nuestra empresa en junio del año 1998, formando parte del equipo de recepción con el que el Hotel Duque de Nájera abriría por primera vez sus puertas.

Comenzó realizando labores de recepción, para luego especializarse principalmente en la gestión de la venta on Jesús López line. Como reconocimiento de su buena labor, eficacia y Margarito profesionalidad, pasó al departamento comercial de la Hotel Playa de la Luz central de Hoteles Andaluces con Encanto para luego ser promocionado a jefe de recepción del Hotel Playa de la Luz, puesto que ocupa desde Mayo del 2009.

Jesús joined our company in June 1998, as part of the reception team when the Hotel Duque de Nájer first opened its doors.

He began in reception and then moved into online sales. In recognition of his good work, efficiency and professionalism, he moved into the central sales office of the Andaluces con Encanto chain, and was later promoted to reception director at the Hotel Playa de la Luz, a position he has held since May 2009.
