Postharvest Directory, a tool for the fruit and vegetable industry Postharvest Directory was first published in 1998 on paper, in bilingual format, Spanish / English. 2012 we joined the new technologies out of print and made available the Postharvest Directory to all Internet users, through editing it in pdf format, allowing online free download. This multiplied at least x 20 the reached users. The contents of Postharvest Directory encompass all facets of interest in postharvest handling of fruits and vegetables especially, but is also open to non-edible products, ie flowers and ornamental plants. The solutions provided include the fields of plant protection to prolong the preservation of fruit and vegetables, temperature management (precooling, cold storage, controlled atmospheres), ripening, packinghouse machinery and peripherals that facilitate the logistics, equipment and packaging materials, logistic, instruments to control the quality and record the storage and transit conditions, â&#x20AC;Ś and relevant information to keep you updated through magazines, online sites and professional exhibitions. The content of Postharvest Directory 2016 reflects the continued improvement in the measuring instruments, easier to transport and data, more reliable, easy to obtain and process. Scales and weight verification are key players for products for which a gram is very important; labels and labelers allow the grower and packer to communicate with the customer, increasingly interested in the food information. Packaging increases the convenience and attractive of the produce, being a showcase by themselves, while a protector due their physical properties and in some cases also by the chemical ones (intelligent plastics, etc.). Phytosanitary transit the green way, with an offer that takes into account the product, the environment and the consumer. Professional fairs in producing countries multiply, bringing technology to the growing areas and buyers. Varieties, key elements at the beginning and end of the process are diversified in a quest for flavor and preservation, while also offering good agronomic properties (resistance, yield). Maturation techniques, which by their physiology or need pattern of trade has more refined options to obtain a product that aspires to resemble as much as possible to "just picked".

"Adding value" to the produce requires technology; in the Directory there are options for all ranges, and particularly minimally processed and ready to eat, and technology to control aspects of quality such as the absence of foreign materials and quality control, both external but also internal, o the product itself, through sensors.

Scald control without postharvest chemical treatments

In the industry sector of the storage of apples and pears, a new technology called “DCA-CF Conservation” (Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere with the use of chlorophyll sensors) is being increasingly used.

The system, patented by the Government of Canada and developed by Dr. Angelo Zanella, is distributed throughout Europe exclusively by ISOLCELL SpA. This method replaces the static conservation parameters with dynamic ones resulting from the response given by the fruit itself. It uses a special sensor that measures the fluorescence emitted by apples and pears, thereby identifying the minimum threshold of oxygen tolerated by the fruit. The AC conservation takes place at a value slightly above that threshold, dynamically adjusted throughout the storage period. By lowering the level of oxygen in the storage chambers, internal metabolic activity is drastically reduced, which results in a better maintenance of internal and external characteristics defining product quality. Using this technology, ISOLCELL meets the growing consumer´s demand requiring produce free of chemical residues. Another advantage of DCA is the drastic reduction of internal browning in varieties like Granny, Braeburn, Pink Lady and Fuji. And also the exclusion of drencher as post-harvest treatment to apply antioxidants, significantly reduces the percentage of rotten fruits in storage. The shelf life of this whole, unpeeled root vegetable is also extended after a spray or dip in this wash. This trial was used to verify the effectiveness of Naturesealâ&#x201E;˘ PS10 when used on parsnips. Different concentrations of PS10 were tested with prepared samples, and the samples evaluated over four days. SR1 as alternative to the sodium metabisulfite in ready to use potatoes

The use of sodium metabisulfite to maintain the quality of peeled and fresh cut potatoes has the advantage of the economy but it use is increasingly questioned in certain markets. Current technology offers potential alternatives as are other types of preservatives and modified atmospheres. An essay evaluates Agricoat SR1 as dip solution, and Amcor plastic packaging with selective permeability. This study suggests that King Edward not only have a longer shelf life than Maris piper when untreated, but they also respond better to the treatments. The trial indicates that a shelf life of P+7 for King Edward, and P+4 for Maris Piper can be achieved when using SR1 at 2.5 % with Amcor microperforated film.
