Our Inaugural Live Auction Sale
Wednesday | April 3, 2024 | 1:30 MST
sidney, mt livestock market center
offering 55 registered black angus bulls
Functional - Maternal - Performance
Dear Fellow Cattlemen,
We would like to welcome you to our first annual production sale! We would also like to give a big thank you to all our past customers that continue to make our program a success. The cattle industry is definitely the bright spot in agriculture right now and we think there are several more positive years ahead. Every year will present a different challenge, but with faith, perseverance, and good neighbors and friends, we will all continue to be blessed!
This past year we had the opportunity to purchase the complete dispersion of the Jan & Sally Severance Angus cow herd. Jan had spent the last two decades building a powerful set of females and they have been a tremendous addition to our program. We feel that the maternal performance of these cows has fit in very well with our own home-raised cows and we couldn’t be happier with how they have pushed our program forward.
As seedstock producers, it is our job to sift through all the info to make not only your life easier, but your herd more profitable. Functional, maternal, and performance define what our goals are. The focus on fertility, longevity, and foot quality has never been more important in the Angus breed. We do not feel that you can build an elite set of females by focusing on one certain trait or chasing the biggest growth numbers on paper. Those numbers don’t mean a thing without a pregnancy and a live calf! In this catalog we have tried to keep it simple by giving you the EPD’s that we feel are the most useful to the commercial cattleman. If you would like more information than what we have provided, we would be happy to assist you in getting it.
Our cowherd is managed the same as most commercial cowherds and grown strictly on dryland pasture, salt and mineral. We feel that this is the most honest approach to assure that they can perform adequately in our northern climate. Our cows need to handle real ranch conditions and raise an above average calf or we don’t keep them. The bulls are fed right here on the ranch. They have been fed a high roughage ration that is built to keep their gut functioning properly, ensuring soundness and longevity. Our ultimate goal is to raise functional, easy fleshing cattle that are structurally correct, fertile, and last a long time for our customers!
If you have any questions please let us know. If you would like to look at the bulls prior to the sale please feel free to stop by anytime. Visitors are always welcome!
Thanks again for taking the time to consider our program.

What do we mean?
Functional - Maternal - Performance
Functional
Nothing is better at converting grass into protein than the Angus cow; that’s what they were made to do! A cow must do this efficiently or she is costing the producer money. The ability to maintain her body condition, while raising a big, stout calf, and breeding back on time, is what we believe a functional cow is. The hard short grass and drastic temperature swings in our northern climate are a real test for these cattle. Another must-have is proper foot and leg structure. We are not going to try to tell you that every cow we have has perfect feet, but we are trying our best to select and market cattle with good feet. There’s no compromise here. If they aren’t good, they leave!
Maternal
A cow should have the natural maternal instincts to get her calf moving and nursing soon after birth. We also believe this includes having an udder that is properly structured so that the calf can nurse without assistance. Milking ability is good to a point, but it becomes undesirable when a calf needs help to attach and nurse. This is important to us because we do not have extra manpower to babysit every cow, especially when it’s terribly cold. We also require our cows to have a temperament that is safe, not only for the cow and her calf, but especially us while we are processing the calves.
Performance
Commercial producers sell their cattle by the pound, and we expect our genetics to add extra pounds to their calf crop. Being transparent in providing the ratios of each cow and calf is important, so that our customers know how they rank within their contemporary group. We don’t believe the continual stacking of light birth weight genetics is necessary for every bull. Studies have shown that a calf will double its weight in the first 5 weeks of its life. So a 60 lb calf vs a 85 lb calf at birth is already a 50lb difference when 5 weeks old. We don’t think you will gain that weight back by fall. Quality genetics increase your bottom line!

Growth Fund is the #1 sire for registrations in the Angus breed for 2023. He’s had unbeatable customer satisfaction in all segments of the beef industry. His birth weights are very consistent and his calves have substance and vigor when they hit the ground. We appreciate the extra performance that shows in his calves. We have calved two sets of Growth Fund sired heifers now and they are making a tremendous set of females. They have beautiful level udders, good feet with great heel depth and are also very docile. We feel that the Growth Fund sons will sire a heavy set of steers and his daughters will be maternally functional.

Benchmark is a maternal powerhouse. He is moderate framed, deep bodied with great rib shape and extra muscle in his hind quarter. Benchmark is a female maker that doesn’t sacrifice performance. We calved the first set of Benchmark daughters this spring and they are going to make a powerful set of females.

The performance of the Marvel calves have been outstanding. He will be one of our biggest sire groups in next year’s offering. He is a cow bull that will add pounds to a calf crop. His progeny are deep bodied with excellent feet. We think his daughters are really going to shine in our herd in the coming years.
Badlands was a bull that Jan purchased from Schaffs in 2020 to further extend the SAV Territory genetics in his herd. He is a powerful individual with an impressive length of body and dimension. His sons really stand out in this offering and did exceptional on feed. We calved a few of his daughters this spring and they are very eye appealing females and have excellent mothering ability. Badlands is also a complete outcross to the genetics we’ve offered in the past.

We felt this bull could have started the sale but they can’t all be Lot 1! Thickness, depth of rib, length - he has it all! Top 5 ADG in the offering. Dam might be the calmest cow we have. She’s never in a hurry and her calf is always by her side. She breeds back 1st cycle every year and has raised several high quality bulls in the past. I think this bull truly exemplifies Functional-Maternal-Performance!

Do kids make good cattle or cattle make good kids?

We think both!

Bold sprung, extremely docile, good looking bull out of a really good first calf heifer. I wouldn’t be afraid to use this bull on heifers or cows. With 2 of the great maternal performance bulls, Payweight and Weigh-up, in his pedigree he will mature into an individual with a lot of structure, mass, and dimension. This is a real quality calf that’s worth waiting for later in the offering. You can’t miss him because he’s gonna want you to scratch his back!

We have really liked the look of this calf since birth. He’s in the top 3% on ADG and his dam stems back to the great Lucy 6863 herd-builder female that Severances’ used to create so many good cows out of. You will find the “63’ digits in a lot of these pedigrees. 3606 is going to be a thick made bull with great length when he matures. There is a ton of power in this one here!
