Angus PLEASANT VALLEY

Our 2nd annual Live Auction Sale

Wednesday | April 2, 2025 | 1pm MST sidney, mt livestock market center

offering 60 registered black angus bulls

Functional - Maternal - Performance

Dear Fellow Cattlemen,

It’s hard to believe it has already been an entire year! We can’t thank you enough and are still incredibly humbled by the support we received from our 2024 inaugural sale. We truly appreciate the new friendships made and the trust from our loyal customers that has formed over the past 20 years. Today’s outlook on the cattle market is as bright and as positive as we have ever seen in the history of breeding Angus cattle. Black Angus cattle continue to bring a premium in the feeder calf and replacement heifer sales, due in part to the accomplishments of Certified Angus Beef (CAB). We personally do not see that changing anytime soon. Thanks again for a great start to our new sale format! Being your seedstock provider is not something we take lightly.

We are currently utilizing some genetics that are different from the mainstream sires. We aren’t chasing fads, and we don’t focus on single traits when picking our AI sires and herd bulls. As seedstock producers, it is our job to sift through all the info to make not only your life easier, but your herd more profitable. Functional, Maternal, Performance define what our goals are. The focus on fertility, longevity, and foot quality has never been more important in the Angus breed. We do not feel that you can build an elite set of females by focusing on one certain trait or chasing the biggest growth numbers on paper. Those numbers don’t mean a thing without a pregnancy and a live calf! In this catalog we have tried to keep it simple by giving you the EPD’s that we feel are the most useful to the commercial cattleman. In the footnotes under each bull we want you to know a little about the dam. We want you to be confident that you are investing in genetics that will add pounds AND build females that have fertility. The bulls in this catalog are out of our proven cows and cow families. Cows that aren’t pampered, breed back and wean heavy calves every year. We want the best for our customers, because if you don’t succeed, neither do we! If you would like more information than what we have provided, we would be happy to assist you in getting it.

Our cowherd is managed the same as most commercial cowherds and grown strictly on dryland pasture, salt and mineral. We feel that this is the most honest approach to assure that they can perform adequately in our northern climate. Our cows need to handle real ranch conditions and raise an above average calf or we don’t keep them. The bulls are fed right here on the ranch. They have been fed a high roughage ration that is built to keep their gut functioning properly, ensuring soundness and longevity. Our ultimate goal is to raise functional, easy fleshing cattle that are structurally correct, fertile, and last a long time for our customers!

We would be honored and blessed to have you in attendance at our second annual sale. Even if you don’t need a bull, please bring your family and come have lunch! If you can’t make it in person, videos and internet bidding will be provided by DVAuction.

If you have any questions please let us know. If you would like to look at the bulls prior to the sale please feel free to stop by anytime. Visitors are always welcome!

Thanks again for taking the time to consider our program.

What do we mean?

Functional - Maternal - Performance

Functional

Nothing is better at converting grass into protein than the Angus cow; that’s what they were made to do! A cow must do this efficiently or she is costing the producer money. The ability to maintain her body condition, while raising a big, stout calf, and breeding back on time, is what we believe a functional cow is. The hard short grass and drastic temperature swings in our northern climate are a real test for these cattle. Another must-have is proper foot and leg structure. We are not going to try to tell you that every cow we have has perfect feet, but we are trying our best to select and market cattle with good feet. There’s no compromise here. If they aren’t good, they leave!

Maternal

A cow should have the natural maternal instincts to get her calf moving and nursing soon after birth. We also believe this includes having an udder that is properly structured so that the calf can nurse without assistance. Milking ability is good to a point, but it becomes undesirable when a calf needs help to attach and nurse. This is important to us because we do not have extra manpower to babysit every cow, especially when it’s terribly cold. We also require our cows to have a temperament that is safe, not only for the cow and her calf, but especially us while we are processing the calves.

Performance

Commercial producers sell their cattle by the pound, and we expect our genetics to add extra pounds to their calf crop. Being transparent in providing the ratios of each cow and calf is important, so that our customers know how they rank within their contemporary group. We don’t believe the continual stacking of light birth weight genetics is necessary for every bull. Studies have shown that a calf will double its weight in the first 5 weeks of its life. So a 60 lb calf vs a 85 lb calf at birth is already a 50lb difference when 5 weeks old. We don’t think you will gain that weight back by fall. Quality genetics increase your bottom line!

Sire to Lots 39 & 40

Deer Valley Growth Fund Reg: #+*18827828

Bruin torque 5261 Reg: #+*18248293

Growth Fund is the #3 sire for registrations in the Angus breed for 2024. He’s had unbeatable customer satisfaction in all segments of the beef industry. His birth weights are very consistent and his calves have substance and vigor when they hit the ground. We appreciate the extra performance that shows in his calves. We have calved two sets of Growth Fund sired heifers now and they are making a tremendous set of females. They have beautiful level udders, good feet with great heel depth and are also very docile. We feel that the Growth Fund sons will sire a heavy set of steers and his daughters will be maternally functional.

We used Torque for his maternal function and power. Torque adds body length, improves udder quality and stands on excellent feet. We believe his daughters will have fertility, longevity and be very functional for our short grass country

Marvel provides maternal and performance in a thick made package. The Marvel offspring have a lot of depth and rib shape and we really appreciate his foot quality. His daughters have shown excellent mothering ability, are very docile and have perfect udders. He excelled on every test when he ratioed 90 for BW, 111 for WW, 109 for YW.

Pacific is a big power bull with extra size, length, and muscle. His performance is hard to beat in the areas that drive profit. We appreciate how these Pacific sons move and also seem very sound in their feet and legs.

PVA BOMBER 1346 Reg: 20234378

Bomber was a bull we retained from the 2021 calf crop. He is a calving ease bull that we had collected and used on our heifers for three straight years. We have also bred him to some of our best cows. His calves come easy and have excellent vigor at birth. His mother raised a standout calf every year of her career until we lost her at the age of 12. We will calve the first of his daughters this year; every one being caught first cycle AI. There is a lot of maternal longevity in this bull and he doesn’t sacrifice any performance. We lost him to an injury this last breeding season, so unfortunately we will only have one more calf crop coming.

This bull has looked like he should be in the front of the sale since he was a calf. He’s as smooth as you can make one. Looking back, we realized that we have selected two maternal brothers that have been Lot 1 to start previous sales. Dam is a moderate made, deep bodied, broody looking cow that knocks it out of the park every year! She has caught first cycle AI every year of her career and has two daughters that have been retained. If you want a sire that is going to make you a mother cow or build you a set of feeder steers, here he is!!

Another powerful Growth Fund son that demands your attention when you walk in the pen. 114 WWR, 112 YWR, ADG of 4.0 lbs/ day. All this out of a first calf heifer while breeding back on time! Grandam was in the herd until 13 yrs old and had a WR of 11/102.

A very good bull! Moderate framed, balanced, with good muscle and structure. Dam has a 6/102 WR. The Growth Fund x Tour of Duty will add a lot of length to a calf crop.

Sale feature! True power bull and one of the top performance and phenotype bulls we have. This Marvel son will immediately catch your eye in the pen. We really appreciate the look and performance of the Mohnen Marvel calves. They are excellent fronted, deep ribbed, with plenty of muscle in the hind quarter. Dam is a more moderate angular cow with udder and foot quality that earn an A+. She raises a calf as big as her every year and always catches 1st cycle.

This bull has been a standout since he was a calf and out of a first calf heifer! He boasts a 118WR 116YR and an ADG of 4.0. This calf really has it all with big time numbers, and a smooth look and style. I wouldn’t be afraid to use him on heifers as his sire was our go-to heifer bull for three straight years. He will add some serious pounds to a calf crop and keep things maternal!

Herd bull prospect! Phenotypic standout! Big butt, stout hip, deep, soggy and really good fronted. He just has it all. Has been a favorite since a calf. He comes from a whole line of productive females on the top and bottom that have been in production past 10 years old. His 9 year old dam has never missed AI. She has weaned a brute of a calf every fall and is one of the easiest fleshing cows on the place. She has 3 daughters working in our herd that are just like her. We raised PVA Bomber 1346 (the sire of this bull) and his calves have really performed well. His dam raised a standout every year and two past sale toppers in our previous private treaty offerings. Loads of maternal longevity in this dandy! We are considering using this bull back into our own program at the convenience of his new owner.

Pathfinder dam is one of my favorite cows and keeps things right down the middle of the road. Any commercial guy would like 100 just like her. Quiet disposition, great feet, and always keeps track of her calf. She brings in a stout, heavy calf every fall. This is a great cross for consistency and longevity.

Nice bull. He is tight sheathed, strong through his top and well balanced. Dam is an extremely gentle cow. Her feet are perfect and she has an excellent udder. A lot of quality in the mating.

Excellent calving ease bull that checks all the boxes. ADG of 3.8lbs/day. Pacific x Thunder cross will produce extremely vigorous calves. Our Thunder daughters were some of our best foundation cows. Most of them are 10 years old. A lot of longevity here. Another bull built to last and would work great for anyone looking to add pounds to their calf crop.
