History of Hope House
In 1982, a group of concerned citizens met with the Mayor of Independence, Barbara Potts, to discuss the need for a battered women’s shelter in Eastern Jackson County. There was frustration because these women had no place to go as the shelters in Kansas City were always overflowing. Mayor Potts responded to the problem by forming a Mayor’s Task Force, and within an unprecedented six months, on January 1, 1983, Hope House was opened. The Independence location unfortunately later proved to not be enough to handle the ever growing domestic violence issues in Jackson County, so in 2002, a second shelter was built in Lee’s Summit, MO.
In 2023 Hope House will celebrate 40 years of serving domestic violence survivors and their families. We are planning some special events and activities to express our appreciation for you, our community and partners. We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate this milestone and all we have accomplished over the last 40 years.
