T H E S E CO N D Q UA R T E R Under the Dome (UTD) is the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s magazine to provide an update on the organization, highlight exciting events and to ensure that all our valuable stakeholders are informed on Hall of Fame happenings. We hope it keeps you in the loop on all we are doing in Springfield.

The momentum from the winter has continued and construction is in full effect on the new Hall of Honor and the Dome renovations. With Enshrinement quickly approaching, we look forward to sharing many more exciting updates as the summer progresses!

Our intention is for UTD to encourage conversation and not be a monologue. We want this publication to be your publication. With that in mind, please reach out to us if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, etc. We welcome your input on what you’d like to read more about. Hoophall Assists is the signature community engagement program of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. We partner with organizations across Western Massachusetts and Southern New England and seek opportunities in the cities, regions and countries where we host tournaments and events.

The focus of Hoophall Assists is to educate and inspire young people and community organizations through the fundamental values of basketball that Dr. Naismith believed in so strongly.

We also utilize our museum and event resources to create positive outreach opportunities for the Hall and our Hall of Fame family. We are honored to recognize just a few of the incredible groups with whom we work.

SPRINGFIELD BUSINESS LEADERS FOR EDUCATION HOST GOVERNOR BAKER Governor Charlie Baker was the guest speaker at the annual breakfast hosted by the Springfield Business Leaders for Education (SBLE). He discussed his plans for public education and pending legislation on school finance reform.

These changes could impact children’s educational programming for the next decade.

SBLE is a coalition of employers engaged around improving educational outcomes for Springfield’s children, preparing them for college and career success. The event was attended by Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Trustee Mary-Beth Cooper - President, Springfield College; as well as key business leaders from Springfield and the surrounding communities.

Governor Baker’s visit was timed to coincide with his meeting with 140 students from Holyoke Public Schools. Their trip to the Hall of Fame was a reward for exemplary attendance.

HOOPS AND HARMONY - NEW PARTNERSHIP The Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the Community Music School of Springfield, combined with HoopHall Assist to create a new event “Hoops and Harmony”. A concert focused at children 4 yrs and older, the show helped them learn how sports and music are all about TEAMWORK. Musicians from the Community Music School of Springfield performed in the lobby and musicians from the Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestra performed in the Nike Theater.

Additionally, Springfield Symphony orchestra hosted a “musical petting zoo” in the Mohegan Sun Tip-off pavilion, where children of all ages tried out different instruments.

As the 2018-2019 college basketball season came to a close, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame culminated the season with the presentation of the Men’s and Women’s “Naismith Starting Five” Awards. Created to celebrate and showcase the top players in college basketball by their position - the campaign features a strong social media presence, fan voting and a nationally televised audience.

Throughout the year, the Hall of Fame and the ten Hall of Famers (award namesakes) are integrated into the college basketball scene - reaching teams, fans and players from around the country. The Naismith Starting Five program helps celebrate the skills and talents of today’s college stars, while giving Hall of Famers the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the next generation of players.

With support from our partners: ESPN, the NCAA and the WBCA, The Men’s Naismith Starting Five was presented on April 12th as part of the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show from The Novo in Los Angeles, California and The Women’s Naismith Starting Five was presented on April 4th at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Tampa, Florida. By latest estimates - including social media and a national broadcast audience, the awards program generated more than 5,000,000 impressions from around the globe.

On Saturday, November 16, 2019 the Hall of Fame is hosting the first-ever James Naismith Classic presented by Citi. The one-day triple header will feature some of the best teams in the NCAA. University of Tennessee vs. University of Washington University at Buffalo vs. Harvard University St. Bonaventure University vs. Rutgers University Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, was born in Ontario, Canada on November 6, 1861. During his life, he had many professions: a physical education teacher, chaplain, author, physician, and founder of the University of Kansas basketball program. But most notably, he wrote the original rules of basketball while studying at the International YMCA training academy, now known as Springfield College.

“Without Dr. James Naismith, the game we celebrate and cherish would not exist. We are very proud to honor him with the inaugural James Naismith Classic in Ontario at Toronto’s iconic venue, Scotiabank Arena,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “The Hall of Fame is a global museum, honoring basketball greats from countries around the world, and we’re excited to be hosting this tournament in Canada.”

December 22, 2019 Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Local favorite and 11-time National Champions UConn (American Athletic Conference) will take on Oklahoma (Big 12 Conference), and Florida State (Atlantic Coast Conference) will faceoff with Michigan (Big Ten Conference).

J E R RY CO L A N G E LO H A L L O F FA M E G O L F C L AS S I C PRESENTED BY NIKE The 8th Annual Jerry Colangelo Hall of Fame Golf Classic recently wrapped up and provided another memorable two days of laughs, entertainment and fundraising for the Hall of Fame. 35+ celebrities and 30 foursomes filled the Wigwam Gold course while 180+ party goers attended the annual Pairings Dinner. In total, the event raised over $150,000 for the Hall of Fame.

The event began with a Legends Forum which featured another remarkable group of legends. “Heart of a Champion”, hosted

by Nancy Lieberman, featured Rick Barry, Van Chancellor, Jody Conradt, Charlie Scott and Tina Thompson as each discussed winning championships at various levels. Over 50 tournament guests were on hand to listen to this amazing hour of storytelling.

The Pairings Dinner was one for the ages as guests were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime legends panel. “Player to Coach Evolution” was the topic. Event host Clark Kellogg served as the

perfect emcee as the panel consisted of Jason Kidd, Rick Carlisle, Dan Majerle, Tina Thompson and Paul Westphal as they all discussed their different paths of transitioning from a player to a coach. The evening concluded with a live auction and fundraising pledge that was remarkably supported.

The golf classic was filled with great laughs and poor golf shots! However, it seemed as though there weren’t any erasers left on the pencils after all the low scores! The Wigwam Gold course was the perfect host and the weather could not have been any better. Nike capped off the afternoon by providing another crowd pleasing gift bag for all the participants. Please be sure to keep next May open for the 9th Annual Jerry Colangelo Hall of Fame Golf Classic!

M A R K A . TAT U M DEPUTY COMMISSIONER AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

Mark Tatum was appointed NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer on Feb. 1, 2014, following unanimous approval by the NBA Board of Governors.

He joined the NBA in 1999 and is responsible for the NBA’s business operations, including leading the NBA’s international efforts. Mark also oversees the Global Partnerships, Marketing, Communications and Team Marketing and Business Operations departments in addition to the NBA G League.

Through his leadership skills and extensive industry relationships, Tatum has been influential in guiding and growing the league’s business for nearly two decades.

Since becoming Deputy Commissioner and COO, he has been instrumental in many historic initiatives including the first NBA game in Africa, the launch of seven NBA Academies around the world for youth and elite development, and the debut of the Jr. NBA World Championship, a first-ofits-kind global youth basketball tournament.

Additionally, Tatum spearheaded the NBA’s groundbreaking jersey sponsorship program to feature corporate logos on team jerseys, established an entitlement partnership with Gatorade for the NBA G League, and secured a global merchandising and marketing partnership with Nike, making it the exclusive on-court uniform and apparel provider of the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League.

Prior to assuming his current role, Tatum served as Executive Vice President of Global Marketing Partnerships, where he managed the league’s extensive list of marketing and media partners, and was a key driver of new and expanded partnerships with many leading companies including American Express, Anheuser-Busch, Kia and State Farm. In addition, Tatum was responsible for developing USA Basketball’s marketing plan and sales strategy, and its overall relationship with the NBA. Since joining the league, Tatum has held several positions, including Senior Vice President and Vice President of Business Development, Senior Director and Group Manager of Marketing Properties, and Director of Marketing Partnerships.

Prior to joining the NBA, Tatum worked for Major League Baseball in Corporate Sponsorship and Marketing, the Clorox Company as a Regional Sales Manager, Pepsi-Cola Company in their Sports Marketing department, and Procter & Gamble in sales management.

In 2016, Tatum was named to Forbes’ list of the Top 25 Most Influential Minorities in Sports. SportsBusiness Journal named Tatum to its list of the 50 Most Influential People in Sports Business in 2014 and 2015. For three straight years (2006, 2007 and 2008), he was also honored by the SportsBusiness Journal with a Forty Under 40 Award, making him an entrant into the publication’s Forty Under 40 Hall of Fame.

Tatum sits on numerous boards including USA Basketball, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, LA 2028 Summer Olympics, and the Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors. He is Chair of the Harvard Business School Club of New York and a member of the Executive Leadership Council, a national organization that empowers African-American corporate leaders to make impactful contributions.

Tatum received a B.S. in Business Management from Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard University.

Enhancements in technology will continue to impact the museum and organization. With great anticipation and because of the successful It’s Time to Step Forward Capital Campaign, the BHOF will unveil two new areas within the physical museum by July 24.

The 3,500 square foot Hall of Honor will serve as the culminating point of the visitor experience as it will showcase the over 400 Hall of Famers in an intimate, reverential and interactive environment.

Names of each Hall of Famer will be positioned on glass etchings on one side of the Hall of Honor while on the opposite side; a 60-foot video wall featuring 40 individual video monitors will provide a synchronized Hall of Famer video experience. Four stand-alone 55-inch interactive touch screen monitors will provide guests a complete history of each Hall of Famer via video, photos and written biographies.

In addition to the Hall of Honor, Phase 2 will also feature a new exhibit made possible by the National Basketball Players Association. This much-anticipated exhibit will provide a history of the Association via five programmatic videos along with an opening Welcome video featuring current NBPA President Chris Paul.

In September 2019 following Enshrinement Weekend, the Hall’s 2nd Floor will begin its transformation as part of Phase 3 of the Renovation project. A new look to the Mezzanine (3rd Floor) will also be integrated featuring twelve foot tall banners which will adorn the inside of the dome with profiles including Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, the Birth of the WNBA, Showtime and others.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame vows to “Promote and preserve the game of basketball at every level-professional, collegiate, and high school for both men and women on the global stage.” In 2015, the Hall of Fame started the “It’s Time to Step Forward” Capital Campaign which raised $30 million to modernize the museum.

President and CEO, John Doleva, explained how modifications to the museum will enhance the Hall of Fame experience for visitors.

“While the museum is only 17 years old, there were several factors that caused us to want to update our visitors experience and set the bar for Halls of Fame around the world. When we built the museum, it was really at the front end of the digital age, however our budget did not allow us to pioneer digital technology.

Our experience was very much two-dimensional, both printed word and some video. By focusing our redesign on digital inter-actives, it allows the Hall to tell a much deeper story, and bring our Hall of Famers appropriately alive.”

Doleva continued, “We are complementing our digital upgrades with more artifacts as that is what makes our Hall of Fame unique. Halls of Fame are places where artifacts are so important to tell or embellish a story or milestone.

Museums occasionally help people learn about new things. Phase 1 of the construction project included the Mohegan Sun TipOff Pavilion Lobby, which consists of iconic images and videos of memorable basketball moments and includes the “Players Locker Room,” which features 24 Hall of Famers, and gives fans biographical information about each player.

When I visited the Hall of Fame during Enshrinement Weekend last September, the “Players Locker Room” was my favorite part of the additions, because it gave me insight into the greatest players that I never saw play.

The Hall of Fame also held a screening in their Nike Theater of the documentary “A Basketball Love Story,” which later aired on ESPN. This documentary told viewers how several players and coaches fell in love with basketball. As an NBA writer, it was interesting to hear that several players and coaches have similar “love stories” with basketball to my own.

Based on the renovations at the Hall of Fame, one might surmise, that the greatest individuals associated with the game are now immortalized in A New Home.

C L ASS O F 2 0 1 9 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST ELECTEES

BILL FITCH – He coached in the NBA for 25 seasons, being named Coach of the Year twice. Bill was named to the NBA’s Ten Best Coaches of All Time. He led the Celtics to a Championship and still holds the highest winning percentage in team history. He is the second coach in NBA history to lead a team to three straight 60-win seasons. Prior to coaching in the NBA, Fitch coached collegiately for twelve years leading the University of North Dakota to consecutive NCAA Division II Final Fours. He received the NBA’s Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.

BOBBY JONES - An 8x NBA All-Defensive First Team member and NBA Champion with the Philadelphia 76ers, Bobby is also a 4x NBA All-Star and the recipient of the NBA Sixth Man Award.

Jones was named to the ABA All-Rookie Team, ABA All-Defensive Team (2x) and ABA All-Star Team.

In college Jones led North Carolina to an NCAA Final Four and was named a consensus second team All-American. He represented the USA in Munich, Germany, bringing home an Olympic silver medal.

SIDNEY MONCRIEF - A 5x NBA All-Star and 2x time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He earned NBA All-Defensive Team honors 4x and All-NBA First Team. In 11 NBA seasons he averaged 15.6 points and 4.7 rebounds. He played for the University of Arkansas, averaging 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Moncrief led the NCAA in field goal percentage during the ‘75/76 season at .665 and earned Consensus First Team All-America in 1979.

JACK SIKMA – A 7x NBA All-Star and NBA Champion. Named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and the only center in NBA history to lead the league in single-season free throw percentage at .922. In his 14 NBA seasons, Sikma averaged 15.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. Collegiately, Sikma averaged 21.2 points and 13.1 rebounds per game - leading Illinois Wesleyan to three conference championships. Named a First-Team NAIA All-American and Academic All-American 2x.

PAUL WESTPHAL – A 5x NBA All-Star, 3x All-NBA First Team member and NBA Champion with the Boston Celtics. In his 12 NBA seasons, he averaged 15.6 points and 4.4 assists per game, including over 20 points per game for five consecutive seasons. He earned AP Second Team All-America at USC averaging over 20 points and 5 assists per game his senior year. Westphal has been inducted in the USC Hall of Fame, Pac-12 Hall of Honor and the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor.

TENNESSEE A&I TEAMS OF 1957-59 – With Hall of Fame coach John McLendon at the helm, the Tennessee A&I teams of ‘57, ‘58 and ‘59 were the first to win back-to-back-to-back college championships. Known for fast-breaks and extreme discipline, they dominated their opponents with high scoring and smothering defense. Led on the court by John “Rabbit” Barnhill and Dick Barnett, the team also broke social barriers as they traveled to national tournaments and challenged segregation.

Tennessee A&I has since been renamed Tennessee State.

TERESA WEATHERSPOON – A 5x WNBA All-Star and 2x WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. She was the first player to tally 1,000 points and 1,000 assists in the WNBA. A 6x Italian League All-Star, 2x Russian League champion, and an Olympic gold medalist. Weatherspoon played for Louisiana Tech University where she was named to the Kodak All-America Team twice. In 1988, she led her team to an NCAA Championship and was named the recipient of the Wade Trophy. Weatherspoon was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

The Class of 2019 was introduced to the world during the NCAA Men’s Final Four weekend in Minneapolis and will be Enshrined in Springfield on September 6, 2019.

AL ATTLES – Following his collegiate career at North Carolina A&T, he joined the Philadelphia Warriors (now Golden State) as a player. Since then, he has held numerous roles in the franchise including coach, team executive and ambassador to the community. He led the organization to an NBA Championship in 1975 and is one of five Warriors to have his number retired. Attles has been with the Warriors' in one capacity or another for nearly 60 years. In 2014, Attles received the Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame.

CHARLES “CHUCK” COOPER – Born in 1926 in Pittsburgh and played collegiately at West Virginia State University before being drafted in the Navy. He returned to school at Duquesne University where he was an All-American and the first African American to play in a college basketball game south of the Mason-Dixon line. Cooper briefly joined the Harlem Globetrotters and soon after was the first African American to be drafted to the NBA (Red Auerbach’s Boston Celtics).

VLADE DIVAC – A native of Yugoslavia, Divac joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1989 and played in the NBA until 2004 - recording over 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, and 1,500 blocked shots. Named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and NBA All-Star Team. With Yugoslavia he earned two Olympic silver medals, two European Championships gold medals and two FIBA World Championships gold medals. Named one of European Club Basketball’s 50 Greatest Contributors and is a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame. His number was retired by the Sacramento Kings, where he currently serves as the General Manager.

CARL BRAUN – A premier guard of the 1950s during his 13-year professional career in the NBA. A native of Brooklyn, he played collegiately at Colgate University. Braun joined the New York Knicks in 1947 and led the team in scoring for seven straight seasons. He was named an NBA All-Star 5x and won an NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics in 1962.

WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY TEAMS OF 1948-82 – Before the days of NCAA Women’s Basketball, the Wayland Baptist University women’s basketball team won 131 consecutive games from 1953-58 and 10 AAU National Championships overall. Rosters included 3x AAU All-American Patsy Neal, 2x FIBA World Championships gold medalist Katherine Washington, co-captain of the 1980 United States Olympic team Jill Rankin, and 130 All-Americans. Coach Harley Redin and team sponsor Claude Hucherson, as well as five players have been enshrined in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame with the team as a whole was recognized as trailblazers of the game in 2013.

In his 21 years in the NBA, Dirk Nowitzki reinvented the power forward position with consistent outside shooting and that trademark fade-away, knee-up, fall-away masterpiece. It signaled the arrival of a new generation of European players when Dirk was drafted in 1998.

His NBA record 21 seasons with one team, the Dallas Mavericks, were filled with All-Star Games, playoff appearances, and league-wide acclaim.

In 1998, Dirk became just the fourth German player to play in the NBA. The transition to the NBA at such a young age was tough, but Dirk’s initial struggles were eased after a restructuring of the franchise. The fun-loving forward became the Mavericks first All-NBA player in 2001. He became the face of the franchise over the next few seasons leading the Mavs to their first ever NBA Finals appearance in 2006. Despite the series loss, Dirk proved to be a deadly offensive threat and a true leader in Dallas.

A year later, Dirk led the Mavericks to the league’s best record of 67-15 while becoming just the fourth player ever (at the time) to average 50% from the field, 40% from three-point, and 90% from the foul line. For his efforts, Dirk was named the Most Valuable Player of the regular season, the first European player to earn the coveted award.

But an NBA championship still needed to be checked off. Four seasons later, the Mavericks reached the Finals once again, but this time the outcome would be different.

Despite going up against the heavily-touted Miami Heat and their Big Three, Dirk led Dallas to their first ever NBA championship earning Finals MVP for his efforts. A careerdefining moment for one of the most unique and dominant players in the NBA. It is hard to look back in history and find a player quite like Dirk Nowitzki. His loyalty to the City of Dallas for more than 2 decades is rare these days. His game was so different from his predecessors as well as his contemporaries that it propelled him to that other-world status. Dirk Nowitzki changed the game.

Greetings from Springfield, the birthplace of basketball! In our previous edition of Under the Dome, we spoke of campaign success and upcoming construction projects. And as you can see by the articles in this current publication, along with the images on this very page, it’s quite obvious that the summer of 2019 is “Hard Hat Season” here at the Hall!

There are several projects underway on the property, and I expect you to be amazed at the accomplishments when you next visit the Hall. Whether as a Hall of Famer, Board Member, Marketing Partner or Fan, you will be proud to call the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame the finest sports museum in the world.

We are also excited that UCONN National Champion, NBA legend and 2018 Hall of Fame Class Member Ray Allen is partnering with us on a newly established golf tournament taking place right here in Springfield on July 25th and 26th.
