The energy of Enshrinement kept us going well into the winter months and while some think winter in New England is a quiet time, that’s not the case! A multitude of tournaments, phases of construction and awards selection committee meetings fill the calendars of our team in Springfield.

The achievements of the Campaign and the addition of new partnerships and events around the globe have the Hall well poised for the future. Hoophall Assists is the signature community engagement program of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. We partner with organizations across Western Massachusetts and Southern New England and seek opportunities in the cities, regions and countries where we host tournaments and events.
J.J. BAREA VISITS THOSE CLOSE TO HOME During Enshrinement 2018, JJ Barea of the Dallas Mavericks, joined his family, Head Coach, Rick Carlisle, Hall of Fame Executives, and community leaders as they visited with families in Holyoke Massachusetts. Holyoke, a community located only a short drive from the Hall of Fame, is home to one of the largest populations of families who fled Puerto Rico because of Hurricane Maria.
The focus of Hoophall Assists is to educate and inspire young people and community organizations through the fundamental values of basketball that Dr. Naismith believed in so strongly. We also utilize our museum and event resources to create positive outreach opportunities for the Hall and our Hall of Fame family. We are honored to recognize just a few of the incredible groups with whom we work.
Barea, who was in town to accept the 2018 Mannie Jackson Basketball’s Human Spirit Award, has been a force for good in helping those impacted by the hurricane that significantly damaged his home island of Puerto Rico.
SERVICE ABOVE SELF LUNCHEON For the 9th consecutive year, the Hall of Fame combined with the Rotary Club of Springfield to host the “Service Above Self Luncheon” – an annual celebration of those who live out the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. This year, University of Kentucky Head Coach and Hall of Famer, John Calipari was selected as the National Honoree. James “Jeb” Balise, owner of Balise Auto Group, was the local nominee. Both were recognized for their outstanding generosity to various charitable organizations in the communities that they live and work.
Since the storm, JJ raised more than $500,000 and coordinated many trips to the island bringing supplies such as food, water, generators and clothing. Following the private “meet & greet” with these families, J.J. and the Hall of Fame Team visited with students from Holyoke High School to offer words of encouragement about the importance of school attendance, overcoming obstacles and the wonderful values of teamwork and perseverance built into the beautiful game invented by Dr. Naismith in 1891.
Hosted by Board Member Frank Colaccino, Hall of Fame President John Doleva and members of the Springfield Rotary, the 2018 event was completely sold out and served as a celebratory beginning to the Holiday Season.

The 3rd Annual ONE Basketball Organization Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic Presented by Audi teed off on Friday, November 16 th at the luxurious Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, California. The field was another star studded cast of Hall of Famers and hoops legends who each delighted and dazzled our event participants. This year’s tournament was a complete sell out — with 27 fivesomes, Monarch Beach was busting at the seams! We kicked off the tournament in style — hosting a private dinner for Hall of Famers and VIP’s at a beautiful home overlooking the course and the picturesque Pacific Ocean. Hall of Famers, retired players and sponsors shared hours of stories and laughs while dining on a deliciously catered dinner. Of course, everyone’s golf games were on point - filled with memorable putts, on course action, and laughs that were heard from the ocean to the first tee box. The competition was tight, but NBA legend Jon Barry with the Harvey Brown Group came away victorious with former LA Laker Legend Shannon Brown and the Audi Group coming in 2 nd place.
The Hall of Fame was honored to share a portion of the proceeds with Ronald McDonald House of Orange County. RMH is a top-notch organization and we are proud to support them in their efforts to care for children and families in the Dana Point Community. "Remarkable. I'm still unconscious," said Bruce Reznick, also known as Mr. Whammy. "I'm walking in a dream. It was just simply marvelous. The personnel were wonderful, the hotel they picked is the best they could ever come up with. I've never met such courteous, accommodating people in my life. We had the most wonderful time. To embrace some of the old players, get autographs of the old players. It was a dream come true." "That was a beautiful event," said Herb Brown. "I thought it was great. Everything. It was my first one, so it was really surprising, but I really enjoyed it." The event was a celebration of the Nets' greatest NBA era with the induction of point guard Jason Kidd and team president Rod Thorn. The Nets group received tickets to the enshrinement ceremony, the pre-event VIP Reception at the Hall of Fame, hotel stay, breakfast the following morning and commemorative basketballs, all courtesy of the Nets. "Things like this really hit you in the heart for your love of the game beyond the Nets part of it makes it really special," said Jay Jollie. "The way it was put together. The hotel. The VIP reception.

We met Jason. We met Grant Hill. We met Jason Collins. Everybody was there and it was so nice in a relaxed environment like that. It wasn't like you were pushing somebody. Everybody was just happy and celebrating together. I just loved it." "So accessible," said Sally Scimeca. "Everybody that we met, there wasn't one person that refused to talk to you, to even sign a couple autographs, which we didn't ask, but take pictures with you. It was just amazing how everybody was so accessible and so friendly and so happy." Kidd and Thorn were part of a 13-person class that included three of Kidd's peers — Grant Hill, Steve Nash, and Ray Allen. Kidd's 19-year career included his six-plus season stint with the Nets during which he led the team to two NBA Finals and four division titles while earning two All-NBA First Team honors. He retired following the 2013 season and ranks second all-time in NBA history in assists and steals, as well as third in triple-doubles. "Jason Kidd was amazing," said Robert Liff. "His passes, his fast breaks, his leadership on the team, his clutch plays. Jason was amazing. Amazing individual. All-around great basketball player. He took us to a whole other level." After retiring as a player, Thorn took the first step in extending what has become a more than 50year career in pro basketball as an assistant coach for the 1974 ABA champion New York Nets. He returned to the franchise in 2000 and a year later Thorn's trade for Kidd was the centerpiece of the dramatic rebuild of the summer of 2001. It paid off with the consecutive Eastern Conference championships. "Rod always has great stories," said Jill Bloch. "A few years ago we sat at a table for a function and he just sat and told us stories the whole night. We just sat there forever and listened to him." Previously inducted Hall of Famers such as Nets legend Julius Erving and more joined this year's inductees at the VIP reception at the Hall of Fame. From there, Nets season ticket members bussed over to the induction ceremony and walked the same red carpet as the Hall of Famers on their way in. At the induction ceremony, they heard from the full class that also included Katie Smith, Tina Thompson, Lefty Driessel and Charlie Scott, among others. "It was great," said Jeff Essenfeld. "The cocktail party was fun and the players finally came out and we got to mingle with them and see them. The ceremony was great. A very impressive and memorable event." "It doesn't matter how many accolades they receive, this was sort of like the creme de la creme for all of them," said Neldra Zeigler. "You could see the gratitude, and even humility. I listened to every word everybody said, so I loved it."

The success of the It’s Time to Step Forward Capital Campaign, was due to the incredible leadership of Board Chairman Jerry Colangelo, Campaign Chairman Sherman Brown, President/CEO John Doleva as well as each Campaign Committee member. The Committee included: Junior Bridgeman, Grant Hill, Mannie Jackson, Nancy Lieberman, George Raveling, Jim Taubenfeld, Jim Vinick and Consultant Bill Sturtevant. Each of these individuals loyally served the effort that launched at a meeting in Miami, Florida on January 23, 2014. In all, the Hall of Fame raised over $30 million since then as the Campaign concluded December 31, 2018. The dedication of the Committee, 100% board participation and an active network of contributors led to the May 23, 2018 Grand Opening of Phase 1: The Tip-Off Pavilion presented by Mohegan Sun, The Hall of Fame Theater presented by Nike and the Naismith Coaches Circle Interactive Video Exhibit. The Tip-Off Pavilion includes 20 individual Players Lockers featuring dynamic graphics, video highlights and inspirational audio messages. To complement the Coaches Circle Courtyard that includes a Dr. Naismith sculpture by Sculptor Brian Hanlon and granite benches dedicated to 40 coaches, an interactive video exhibit is now open on the second floor. Demolition in preparation for Phase 2 began in January, 2019. Over the next six months, construction of a stunning new 3,500 square foot Hall of Honor will feature Hall of Famers with their names etched in glass while an expansive video wall of over 40 video screens will “bring Hall of Famers to life.” Kiosks surrounding the room will enable guests to delve into the histories of each Hall of Famer. This is expected to open in June.

videos. These videos will include interviews with current and retired players as their core supplemented by original cinematography, archival imagery and designed graphics. Phase 3 will begin in September 2019 with the construction of a new mezzanine (3 rd floor) and feature Hardw ood Heroics. This exhibit will pay tribute to iconic moments and time periods that shaped today’s game. Twelve-foot tall banners will adorn the inside of the dome with profiles including Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, the birth of the WNBA, Showtime, and others.

Lastly, this final stage of renovations will focus on the Guest Experience as a new series of theme related exhibits and a redesigned flow pattern is introduced. The 1891 Gallery presented by the MassMutual Foundation, Catching Fire, Opportunity, The Game, Fandemonium, the James F. Goldstein SuperFan Gallery, Media, Passion and Celebration exhibits will pay tribute to these vital aspects of the game while building anticipation and excitement for visitors as they journey towards the revered Hall of Honor.

Congratulations to the All-Showcase Team For 2019 HoopHall Classic In its first year as presenting sponsor of the Spalding HoopHall Classic, Eastbay revived the highly touted All-Showcase Team, which celebrates the top five performers at the showcase, regardless of position.
The student-athletes named to the Eastbay All-Showcase Team listed in order of votes received include: Scottie Lewis (Ranney School – Tinton Falls, N.J.), Brandon Boston (Norcross HS– Norcross, Ga.), Sharife Cooper (Mc Eachern HS–Powder Springs, Ga.), Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (IMG Academy–Bradenton, Fla.) and Keion Brooks (La Lumiere School–La Porte, Ind.). Lewis led Ranney School to a win over Federal Way High School with 26 points. Boston contributed 26 points, four steals and three rebounds in his team’s win over Roselle Catholic. On the final day of the showcase, Cooper of Mc Eachern High School delivered 27 points and three steals in a close game against Rancho Christian. During one of the most anticipated matchups of Hoophall Classic – IMG Academy versus Oak Hill Academy – Robinson-Earl put up 18 points and tallied a staggering 26 rebounds. Brooks of La Lumiere School handled DeMatha Catholic in a blowout win, leading his team in scoring with 25 points and 14 steals. With more than 50 teams featured in Springfield, Mass., the birthplace of basketball, the Eastbay All-Showcase Team was decided by industry-leading media partners attending and reporting on the event, based on the players’ performance during the 2019 Spalding Hoophall Classic Presented by Eastbay. In addition to the Eastbay All-Showcase Team, the athletic performance retailer also celebrated the Most Outstanding Player Award Presented by Eastbay for each of the 27 matchups.

About Sherrie Deans: Sherrie Deans currently serves as the Executive Director for the NBPA Foundation. In her role as ED, Sherrie leads the philanthropic efforts of the Union and supports the individual efforts of the 450 NBA players that make up its membership. The work of the Foundation includes preserving the legacy of the players, past and present, and investing in both domestic and international programs that enrich the lives of those in need. Prior to leading the Foundation, she served as the Executive Director of the Admiral Center, an initiative founded by NBA All-Star David Robinson. The Admiral Center sought to engage celebrities in meaningful and catalytic work on behalf of low-income people. She began her career in the financial services sector where she spent over a decade working at several of the largest financial institutions in the world. She has also held various senior management positions in the areas of Marketing, Strategies, and Operations at American Express and MBNA America, where her responsibilities ranged from launching and managing call centers staffed with hundreds of employees to developing marketing strategies for co-branded consumer products. She holds a B.A. in economics and political science from Columbia University. Currently, she lives in the Bronx with her husband and two sons.

EXHIBIT SPOTLIGHT It seems like every March the college basketball world is shocked by an upset or two in the NCAA Tournament. This year the University of Maryland, Baltimore Country did just that and left the nation stunned as they beat the University of Virginia in the round of 64. Marking the first time in Men’s NCAA Tournament history a 16 seed defeated a 1 seed. A 16 over a 1 has happened only once before when Harvard defeated Stanford in the 1998 Women’s NCAA Tournament. the NCAA Tournament. Just their second appearance in the Tournament, UMBC hadn’t had much experience playing top 25 teams in the country let alone the overall number one seed in the tournament. But that didn’t faze the Retrievers as they held their ground in the first half against Virginia and took a commanding lead over the number one defense in the nation in the second half, winning the game 74-54. The story of UMBC is what makes March Madness so special. Of the 17.3 million brackets that were filled out with ESPN, only 3.4% chose UMBC over Virginia. Upsets seem to be the new norm of college basketball in March but what the Retrievers did was something momentous. They busted brackets and put themselves in the record books completing one of the greatest upsets in basketball history.
After coming in second in their conference standings for the regular season with a 24-10 record, the UMBC Retrievers won the America East Conference Tournament Championship over the University of Vermont, thus giving them an automatic bid to 18

Moss Employee Scholarship to support its Show Staff in furthering their post High School education. It is our honor to dedicate this initiative to the memory of Doug Moss, a beloved employee and friend who passed away in 2010. Please enjoy this piece written by his widow, Marla.
Legend has it that an unsung hero is an individual who does great deeds but receives little or no recognition for them. They are people who enter into the lives of others and leave a permanent and lasting imprint. Douglas “Coach Doug” Moss was one of those special beings. Born in Waterbury, Connecticut and raised in Meriden, CT, Doug was the fifth of eight children, born to Eddie and Judy Moss. Growing up, Doug was the mediator, the helper, the honor student, and the athlete. Throughout high school and college, Doug

would always manage to find time to tutor or coach others to help them achieve success. In Meriden he earned the nickname coach on the basketball court. He would stop in the middle of basketball games to coach younger players and teach the fundamentals of the game. Many of those young men and women went on to achieve stellar high school and college basketball careers. Doug was a graduate of the HBCU Tuskegee University, and a Veteran of the United States Marines. Most importantly, Doug was a devoted family man, married to his wife Marla Early-Moss for 21 years. His two children Jazmine and Douglas (DJ) were also former employees of the Basketball Hall of Fame (BHOF), and now they are both college graduates. Always the achiever, Coach Doug brought his lifelong dream to fruition when he opened and became the owner of Coach D’s Steamed Cheeseburgers Restaurant. Douglas Moss, fondly known as Coach Doug, was a beloved employee of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for 10 years, serving as the Financial Controller.

SCHOLARSHIP poet crafting the words to the perfect poem. Coach Doug was an artist and those he encountered (young or old) were his canvass. He had the uncanny ability to help others see themselves in ways previously unfathomable.
Coach Doug was truly an unsung Hero in the Springfield Community who made an impact on so many of the young people that he encountered, whether they’d be on the street, on one of his basketball teams or as employees of the Basketball Hall of Fame Museum. Doug was very active in the Springfield Community, coaching youth basketball and eventually creating the Springfield Heat Basketball Team. He was loved and respected by the young boys he coached and mentored in life skills, having been a father figure to many.
A man amongst men, more importantly a friend, mentor, and role model to the young men and women of the world, Coach Doug was an active agent of social and interpersonal change, up until he lost his valiant battle to cancer in July 2010. There are days when you walk through the halls of the Basketball Hall of Fame and you can feel his smile, and expect to see him walking through the doors any moment, or huddled in a corner offering words of encouragement, doing the extraordinary simply by being himself.

As an advocate and mentor for young people, he would encourage them to continue their education and make it a priority for them to move forward in life. Like most of us, I knew about the Hall’s capital campaign. I did not, however, understand how it would impact me, my career and fans around the world. To stay current for fans and visitors alike, two phases of renovations were designed. In the first phase the Players Locker Program would be introduced. I was so happy when I first learned about it. The more I learned, the more significant it was for me to have my career displayed in a glass framed locker for the world to see. I had seen the drawings and knew it would look spectacular. It’s location would be on the concourse as you enter the building. There is no better place to capture the eyes of all visitors.

In September while attending Enshrinement weekend, I saw my locker (for the first time). It was so overwhelming to me, it brought tears to my eyes. I did have an image in my head of what it would look like but it was nothing like I had imagined. It exceeded all my expectations. It captured my career in complete detail and it took me back to the beginning, allowing me to relive my career in those moments. I feel when you stand in front of my locker you’ll understand who Dikembe Mutombo is and what he accomplished.

ne of the best things about working at the Basketball Hall of Fame is the opportunity to meet the visitors who come from around the globe to visit the birthplace of basketball. Their enthusiasm for the game is evident in their attire or response to the various exhibits.
Recently one of our Show Staff, Harry, met James E. Cummings, Jr. From all outward appearances, he is a diehard Michigan State fan. However, take a minute to talk to him and you quickly learn he is so much more. Below are excerpts of a story written by Michael Duke of The State News. It tells the incredible journey James is on, and we are honored that he made a stop in Springfield, MA along the way. ******************************** Anyone who frequently visits the intramural gyms at MSU to play pickup basketball knows Cummings, even if they think they don’t. The 75year-old East Lansing resi den t an d M SU alumnus often makes trips to campus to take on challengers — who are young enough to be his grandchildren — in basketball. Cummings isn’t picky when it comes to hoops.

he loves most. Cummings was in Gym 2 (MSU) when his heart abruptly stopped beating following a game of pick-up basketball. He suffered a heart attack on the court. While being treated at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, it was discovered through a cardiac catheterization procedure that Cummings had a major blockage of his left anterior descending artery, or LAD. The type of heart attack Cummings suffered is commonly called the “Widowmaker” because of its low survival rate.
A CHALLENGER Cummings said he was by no means a basketball prodigy—which might come as a surprise to those who have played him in horse during the last decade. “I was not what you would call a proficient shooter or a very accurate shooter,” Cummings said. “I was like most youngsters at the time, I was just trying to do the best I could, trying to put the ball through the hoop with not very much success.” When Cummings made his way back to the hardwood at MSU in 2005, the then-62-year-old made a shocking revelation. “I had a basketball in my hand. I started taking a few shots in the gym and then the shots started falling through the hoop,” Cummings said. “I marveled at my proficiency at making the baskets after not being a shooter in my early life.” From that point on for Cummings, the ball continued to fall through the hoop, against any and all challengers. In fact, Cummings believed in his horse-playing capabilities so much he recently set out on an expedition to universities across the country to challenge the best horse players he could find. “I wanted to play the very best horse basketball players around the country at various universities, and that’s where they would be found,” Cummings said. Cummings visited the intramural gyms of 16 schools in total, including several blue-blood basketball institutions, like Indiana University, Duke University and the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill.
Even at his advanced age, he won’t hesitate to engage in a physically-draining game of one-on-one, designed to test mental fortitude, or even to sprint up and down the hardwood with energetic youngsters in a full court game of 5-on-5.
The always-motivated Cummings dominated his opposition at these historic hooping grounds. He won all 15 games of horse at Duke when he touched down at Cameron Indoor Arena in early October, and one day later and about 10 miles down the road at North Carolina, the challenger lost just one game out of 25.
But the game in particular Cummings enjoys playing the most is horse, a game he has mastered. The rules of the game are simple: if you make a shot, then your opponent must make the exact same type of shot. If they fail to do so, they receive a letter. Whoever collects the letters to spell out the word “horse” first loses.
“The enjoyment is not just all in the winning games, it’s in meeting the people and sharing life experiences with them,” Cummings said.
While the rules of the game are simple, defeating Cummings is another story. Few have been able to top the 75-year-old this decade he’s been playing it. And along the way, Cummings has been able to touch the lives of his challengers, not only through playing the game of basketball, but through sharing his story. A story of a man who was given a second chance at life.
AN INSPIRATION Cummings said there’s no expiration date for his basketball playing days. For those looking for inspiration from the energetic 75year-old, he has a simple message: “If I can do it, you can do it.”

When Hall of Famer Fred “Tex” Winter passed away in October at the age of 96, it was a loss felt by many in the sport. As evidenced by the outpouring of condolences and memories shared, it was evident that Tex’s legacy is as simple as his coaching style. It didn’t matter who you were, or where you came from — but the effort you applied. Hard work, focus on the fundamentals and unwavering devotion to the sport was what he expected of himself and those around him.
I've had the good fortune of working with many incredible basketball coaches over the years but none greater than Tex Winter. Tex was an excellent ambassador for the sport of basketball and a true historian of the game. He loved teaching, coaching and sharing his basketball knowledge and enjoyed talking to anyone about any aspect of the sport that they were interested in discussing. Tex preached and believed in the fundamentals of the game, no detail was too small, to not become proficient in. Although he was the architect of the triangle offense he never believed that everyone should use it but rather he believed that all coaches should have a system of play and believed strongly in the importance of that concept. To Tex, individual player skill development and fundamentals were the keys to team success. Footwork, execution, precision, preparation, terminology and attention to detail were all hallmarks of a Tex coached team. Some of my fondest times shared with Tex whether on a plane or bus, in our breakfast meals or just at our desks at the Lakers offices were talking basketball. He loved to talk about the origin of sets, actions, or systems which were thought to be new or creative only to hear Tex say who and when they were used in the past. Countless times we would discuss a format or alignment that seemed inventive only to have Tex correct me with how that was used decades ago! Tex

would often humor me with stories of his early coaching days. He would talk about how he was not only the coach but also the driver, janitor, tutor as well as health and wellness instructor. My take away from these very entertaining antidotes was that Tex loved coaching when there was little notoriety, money or luxuries involved but rather it was merely a passion and joy for him to be a part and his love was pure and authentic to the game.
I will truly miss looking up in the stands hours before game time, while I was working with players down on the court and seeing Tex and his beautiful wife Nancy holding hands side by side in the stands reading their bible together. reetings from Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball! With 2019 firmly in our grasp, the Hall of Fame has already embarked on what promises to be a memorable new year. First, congratulations to the 2019 Class Finalists and Media Award Winners who were announced during the AllStar Game (pg. 26). Each one of them have left an indelible mark on this sport and we are honored to recognize your accomplishments and we look forward to the next step in our process when we announce our elected class of 2019 on April 8th at the Final Four. As we outline in this edition of Under the Dome, the closure of the “It’s Time to Step Forward” Capital Campaign brought about an outpouring of support from our Hall of Famers, Board Members, Corporate Partners and Friends. The investment you have made in the future of the Hall of Fame has been exceptional, and we are excited to share the next phase of renovation updates in the coming months. We have exceeded our $30 million goal and this will result in the renovations that will solidify our place as “the world’s finest sports museum” but also guarantee our long term financial health (pg. 8). Although not part of our Capital construction projects, one of the most iconic components of our museum – the outside dome that rises nine stories above our museum — will undergo a complete restoration this year. Like a jigsaw puzzle, no two tiles are the same. Each will be removed, refinished, and put back in place with an upgraded LED lighting system that will bring a vibrant new focus on the Hall and its prominent place on the riverfront. It promises to be quite the visual experience not seen in the Springfield skyline since the original construction nearly twenty years ago. Another milestone for the Hall of Fame is the creation and approval by U.S. Congress and the President of a Commemorative Coin honoring the Naismith Hall of Fame and the Invention of this great game in 1891. To be the chosen beneficiary of the United States Treasury and U.S. Mint’s 2020 Commemorative Coin program is a prestigious and exclusive designation. It firmly places the Hall, its mission and educational programs on the map and has the potential to bring a new audience to the sport. Available for purchase early next year, these coins will be produced in gold, silver and clad. Our team is working hand in hand with the U.S. Mint and artists to ensure the design that is chosen will show reverence to the past, while celebrating the future of the sport and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
