T H E F I R ST H A L F Under the Dome (UTD) is the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s magazine to provide an update on the organization, highlight exciting events and to ensure that all of our valuable stakeholders are informed on Hall of Fame happenings. So much has transpired since our last issue, it seems like a lifetime ago that we inducted the Class of 2019 with our annual Enshrinement Weekend, and shared the new Hall of Honor with the incoming Class and returning Hall of Famers. While the world has changed forever with this pandemic, one thing stays true - our love of basketball, the game and its people. We look forward to the day when everyone around the globe can enjoy a simple pick up game with friends, experience the energy of a playoff game and partake in the celebration that comes with the incredible class of 2020. About the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the city where basketball was born, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting, preserving and celebrating the game of basketball at every level – men and women, amateur and professional players, coaches and contributors, both domestically and internationally. Greetings from Springfield This edition of Under the Dome finds us in the midst of a pandemic that will forever change our world. This is an unprecedented time in history which requires every citizen to come together in a global effort like we’ve never experienced before. As I reflect on the situation, one of the most notable things I’ve been reminded of is how Dr. Naismith’s core principles, which were written more than one hundred twenty five years ago, are the virtual playbook of today. Instead of a gym, a peach basket and a human opponent – it is the world and our fight against Covid-19.
Self-Sacrifice – Leadership – Teamwork – Initiative Determination – Cooperation - Perseverance - Courage I hope that you, your family, and loved ones are doing well in this very unpredictable coronavirus contagion period. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and hope that this edition of Under the Dome helps provide some positive distraction, encouragement and optimism for the rest of 2020. Many have asked how the Hall of Fame is doing during all this and I’ve outlined some key points that may interest you: •
The Hall of Fame had already closed in early February for a scheduled construction period. We were intending to partially re-open in late March but due to State and Local laws, that has been delayed. Right now, we are planning to revisit this topic in May, or when we receive further direction from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
•
Once we reopen, the Hall will begin a new “Museum Cleaning Protocol”. Based on what we have learned from the CDC on best practices to mitigate the spread of this virus, we have updated our policies and procedures. We have also incorporated new personal sanitization stations for our visitors throughout the building. I would like to personally thank The Hillyard Company (facility maintenance products) and our long time Board Member Hillyard President Jim Carolus for their generous attention to our heightened needs. The Hall has been fully stocked with and ready to make sure our employees and visitors are safe once they return to the Hall.
•
Many of our team members are able to continue their work from home. Our IT staff have provided great support so that we stay connected to each other as well as our donors, board members and Hall of Famers.

As of today, construction on the renovation continues. The contractors have needed to implement new social distancing policies for their employees, and as a result the progress is a bit slower than originally scheduled. This is a minor inconvenience given the importance of making sure everyone stays as safe as possible.

The Hall is continuing its efforts on projects and initiatives that further its Mission. Each of these highlights are featured in this edition of Under the Dome, and I encourage you to explore the pages to learn more: •
On April 4, we were excited to announce the incredible Class of 2020. ESPN’s broadcast with Jay Bilas, Reese Davis, Rebecca Lobo and Paul Pierce was exceptional and befitting the accomplishments of our Inductees. ESPN created a great show and their programming allowed these incredible class members to be highlighted throughout the day.
•
At this point we are moving forward with the originally scheduled date for Enshrinement Weekend (August 28-30). The Hall is constantly monitoring the guidelines around public gatherings and will announce if any adjustments need to be made. Tickets went on sale April 4th and we have already seen incredible activity. We are expecting a sellout so if you haven’t ordered your Enshrinement tickets, please do so soon.

In February the US Mint hosted a ceremonial first-strike of The Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin in Philadelphia. The coin, which was originally planned for sale in April, has been delayed until June 4th due to production impacts created by Covid-19. We are confident that once available, this coin will be widely popular with fans and further the growth of the game on an international level.

Despite the impact that this virus has had on public gatherings, sporting events and the educational systems in our country, we still recognized our Men’s and Women’s Position Award Winners for the college game. The future of our sport is in great hands with these athletes and I look forward to seeing how they continue to impact the sport. That said, we are expecting a robust Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Collegiate Event season (November, 2020 through January, 2021) and have many games and teams already lined up.

Lastly, as part of this year’s Enshrinement festivities, the Hall of Fame will be unveiling the final phase of our multi-million-dollar renovation. All new galleries, such as 1891, the James Goldstein SuperFan Gallery and the Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams are just a few of the features we’ve created for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to all of you who have generously supported this effort!
We are excited about for what the future holds and look forward to the day when we as a global nation conquer this pandemic. Hoophall Assists is the signature community engagement program of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. We partner with organizations across Western Massachusetts and Southern New England and seek opportunities in the cities, regions and countries where we host tournaments and events. The focus of Hoophall Assists is to educate and inspire young people and community organizations through the fundamental values of basketball that Dr. Naismith believed in so strongly. We also utilize our museum and event resources to create positive outreach opportunities for the Hall and our Hall of Fame family. We are honored to recognize just a few of the incredible groups with whom we work.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS ON CENTER COURT The Hall of Fame was pleased and proud to welcome our neighbors to Center Court for the 2019 Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative / C3 Forest Park Policing All Star Games in cooperation with the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department. Young people from Holyoke and Springfield who participate in after school programs at the Holyoke Boys & Girls Club and local Springfield schools were invited to showcase their skills in 3 games that emphasized sportsmanship, teamwork and fair competition. Local political figures and Law Enforcement Executives joined the Event to offer support and positive encouragement in this vibrant and important ongoing initiative. The Hall is grateful to Edward Caisse of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney Anthony Gulluni for their partnership and ongoing support.

ENSHRINEMENT 2019 We continued our tradition of community outreach with the Class of 2019. HoopHall Assists gives students and community members the opportunity to hear how Hall of Famers have persevered to overcome obstacles in their lives and careers. While celebrating the opportunities that the game of basketball created along their journey. Teresa Weatherspoon and Vlade Divac joined cheering students at Commerce High School while Jack Sikma attended a Springfield Rotary Club meeting with local business leaders, An All-Star roster of Sidney Moncrief, Chuck Cooper III, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, Jim Naismith and members of the Harlem Globetrotters joined students at the 4th Annual Educational and Leadership Luncheon which was hosted at Springfield College in partnership with Beta Sigma Boule’. The weekend wrapped up with the National Basketball Retired Players Assoc and Jr. NBA “Full Court Press” Youth Clinic with Vlade Divac, Sidney Moncrief, Teresa Weatherspoon, Spencer Haywood, and Nancy Lieberman. The clinic took place on the appropriately named “Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams” at the Basketball Hall of Fame. There is no way to sugar coat it. Fans of the game missed the NCAA Championships. Twitter feeds were absent of the nail-biting, clock ending shots. There was no “March Madness” frenzy. No bracketology, hours of analyzing seeds or the non-stop banter that is usually pervasive in homes across America. But let’s not lose sight of the fact that there was still a season of amazing moments in the college game this year that deserve our appreciation. In April ESPN’s SportsCenter, unveiled the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Starting Five Awards. These are the top college players for both the Men’s and Women’s game in their position. The Naismith Starting Five program helps celebrate the skills and talents of today’s college stars, while giving Hall of Famers the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the next generation of players. Congratulations to this year’s winners, we look forward to the day when you are back on the hardwood.

Inducted in 2014, David was known to be one of the most influential commissioners in the NBA’s history. He helped shape the game into what it is today. Stern was named the NBA Commissioner in 1984 succeeding Larry O’Brien and he wasted no time in shaping the NBA into one of the most popular sports in the world. Under Stern the NBA added seven new teams, and the relocation of six NBA franchises. The expansion of the global game was one of Stern’s greatest accomplishments during his tenure by opening 13 global NBA offices and staged regular season games outside the U.S. which was the first ever in professional sports. After leaving the NBA, David continued to advocate for the game and share his business knowledge through speaking engagements and consulting. In October, just a couple of months before his passing, David was named the McCormack Department of Sport Management Executive-in-Residence at UMASS Amherst. In that role, he held lectures, classroom visits and round-table sessions with students and faculty.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame joins the rest of the world in its grief for the loss of Kobe and Gianna. The void they left on this earth will forever be felt and our prayers of strength go out to all who were affected by this tragedy. Kobe’s legacy as one of the best players of all-time is evidenced by his selection in the first year of his eligibility. His dedication to the game and work ethic was legendary - personifying the “Black Mamba Mentality”. It will be our honor to celebrate the life and career of Kobe Bryant as he is inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2020. (Kobe’s career highlights can be found on page 22)

Boris was a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame Class of 1984. As secretary-general of FIBA (basketball’s international governing body) he popularized international basketball and turned the game into a sport followed by the whole world. Like many outstanding administrators, Stankovic began as a player. He starred with the Red Star Club of Belgrade, the team that won the 1946 and 1947 Yugoslavia championships. From 1948 to 1953, Stankovic also played on the Yugoslavian national team participating in the first World Championships in Buenos Aires in 1950. A devoted ambassador of international basketball, Stankovic has been a member of the Central Board, Yugoslavia Federation (1953-66), Yugoslavia Olympic Committee, and European Cup Commission. In 1987, he worked with NBA commissioner David Stern to organize preseason exhibition games between NBA teams and the top teams from Europe. Stankovic’s work to include NBA players in the Olympic Games resulted in the 1992 Dream Team. He will be remembered as a visionary for basketball across the globe.

Coaching success was synonymous with the name Morgan Wootten well before his Hall of Fame Induction in 2000. No other coach in basketball history combined a love for the game with a passion for coaching young men more than Wootten. In over forty years of coaching at legendary DeMatha High School, Wootten won more than 1,200 games and was the most successful high school coach in basketball history. Wootten led DeMatha to the mythical national championship in 1962, 1965, 1968, 1978, and 1984. The 1965 DeMatha team broke the 71-game winning streak of Lew Alcindor's Power Memorial team. Recording over 40 consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins, his teams won more than 30 conference championships. And to Wootten’s credit, DeMatha finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Washington, D.C. area more than 20 times. A dedicated educator, more than 150 of Wootten's former players went on to play college basketball and a dozen played in the NBA. More than 20 of his former coaches or players coached at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.

G E O R G E R AV E L I N G CLASS OF 2015
George H. Raveling, referred to by many as “Coach” was born in Washington, D.C. and currently serves as a Global basketball consultant for Nike. George is a husband, a father, a friend, and a mentor to many. In 1960, Raveling graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a fruitful collegiate basketball playing career in the record books. After graduation, Raveling worked as a marketing analyst for the Sun Oil Company. It was at this time period in his life that he had the opportunity to serve as extra security for the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr – on the day Dr. King gave, arguably, the greatest speech of all-time, “I Have a Dream.” That day was memorable for all Americans, but none more than Raveling, as he became the guardian of one of the most precious documents in American history, Dr. King’s written speech, a document he still owns today. In 1964, George would return to basketball as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He would go on to become a world class educator and coach with head coaching jobs at Washington State, the University of Iowa and USC. Following a prolific basketball coaching career, he would spend brief stints as a color commentator for Fox Sports and CBS, before being presented with an opportunity of a lifetime to join Nike. George has been inducted into numerous halls of fame, including the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. Raveling has traveled the world, and maintains an insatiable passion about ideas, people, places and things. At 82 years of age, George has had a multitude of incredible life experiences and counts some of the most successful and brilliant people in the world amongst his closest friends. Through his relationships and experiences, George has learned and continues to learn life lessons that can transform one’s personal and professional life. “Coach” makes it a point to write down the best ideas he sees, thinks, or hears each dayfrom humor, to health and relationships. George’s hobbies are collecting books and friends.

Last August, the Basketball Hall of Fame opened Phase 2 of its $19 million renovation. The 3,500 square foot Hall of Honor Gallery, and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Exhibit “Together”. The Hall of Honor, which serves as a reverential tribute to more than 400 Basketball Hall of Famers, is the culminating point of the museum’s visitor experience. It is an intimate and interactive experience for fans. Positioned on glass etchings along one side of the gallery are the individual names of each Hall of Famer, while on the opposite side; a 60-foot video wall featuring 40 synchronized video monitors give visitors a stunning showcase for the senses. Four stand-alone 55-inch digital touch screens engage guests to learn more - offering them a complete history of each Hall of Famer through videos, photos and written biographies. Together provides a history of the Association, exploring the impacts it has had on the game and players since its inception in the 1950’s. Starting with a welcome video by Chris Paul (current NBPA President) fans are immediately engaged and drawn in. They are met with multiple videos and eye-catching images that teach them the story and evolution of the NBPA. Guests walk away with a new understanding and appreciation of the contributions made by the NBPA: Bigger than Basketball – The role NBA Players have in raising awareness of social justice issues. My Brothers Keeper – The Maurice Stokes/Jack Twyman Story and the sense of brotherhood embraced by today’s NBA Players. Express Yourself – As NBA players continue to redefine the game, they also serve as culture influencers. Stronger Together – The history of negotiations between NBA Players and the League. Tomorrow’s NBPA – The Association’s commitment to ensuring a healthy future for NBA players and for the game of basketball.

Immediately following the 2019 Enshrinement Weekend, contractors began their next transformation project - this time focusing efforts on the Mezzanine. In January, Phase 3, now known as High Above Center Court opened. It is an awe inspiring experience which is the first stop on a visitor’s journey through the museum. Tactile exhibits such as Imprint on the Game, Wingspan and Measure Up dot the perimeter while touch screen stations test the fans knowledge with trivia and games like pairing players like Tina Charles and Ben Simmons to photos taken in their younger days. But the true showstoppers of this space are the twelve-foot tall banners that are paired with display cases featuring artifacts which teach the history of the game.

In February, work began on revitalizing the Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams. A complete court resurfacing and the addition of a 14 foot by 24 foot LED screen are just two of the many new improvements that are transforming the heart of our museum. Last but definitely not least, guests will be amazed by the complete redesign of our second floor. Fans will enjoy an entirely new layout that will lead them through several new galleries including: The 1891 Gallery Presented by the MassMutual Foundation – Explores basketball during Naismith’s lifetime, covering almost 50 years of the game to 1936. Catching Fire – Highlights the evolution of basketball through the game’s watershed moments, its legendary figures, and unforgettable stories. Opportunity – Tells the history of groups who used basketball to overcome challenges. In-depth stories of integration by the Jewish and African American communities as well as Title IX and the establishment of Wheelchair Basketball. Players – Furthering the topics touched on by the NBPA Exhibit, this gallery will teach guests about today’s players and the development of their individual games.

The James F. Goldstein SuperFan Gallery – A tribute to fans; this gallery will showcase the SuperFans of the sport – sharing their passion as told through their memorabilia collections, personal videos and images. Coaches – The Naismith Coaches Circle is the centerpiece of this gallery which is the partner exhibit to our sculptures in the courtyard. This digital component expands on the Coach’s engravings - providing fans the opportunity to hear in their own words about what inspired them in their careers and lives. Funny anecdotes and poignant thoughts on the game and their role in it. Experiencing the Game – Two interactive exhibits grace this gallery: the Kobe Bryant Experience Presented by Panini and a TV studio replica that lets fans test their color commentary and game calling skills against some of the most well known basketball announcers. Celebration - The Celebration Gallery considers the journey all players make in pursuit of the championship hardware and looks at the time-honored traditions of cutting down the nets, popping the cork, and raising the banner to the rafters.

Since the 12-time NBA All-Star retired in 1994, he has been busy taking on challenges of all kinds. From Coach to Entrepreneur - he has developed quite the career portfolio. But none of them could rival his latest endeavor. Over the past five years Isiah has dedicated himself to learning about champagne and studying the intricate process of making champagne. In 2016 he partnered with Cheurlin Champagne winery to import a unique, awarding-winning lowsugar champagne to America. Now, in 2019, he is the proud owner and importer of four unique blends of Cheurlin Champagne which has been introduced to markets across the United States. When current CEO Thomas Cheurlin was introduced to Isiah, he was immediately attracted to the history of the Cheurlin family and appreciated their lineage of producing wines for 10 generations. The two men hit it off immediately and quickly realized that there was great potential to expand the marketplace in America. At Isiah’s recommendation, Cheurlin began producing a low sugar or zero sugar added champagne. The Rose’ de Saignee and Brut Speciale have only 5 grams of sugar. The Célébrité and Le Champion – have no added sugar - all of which Isiah believes will be a big hit for health-conscious consumers. What also makes Cheurilin unique is the private ownership of the grapes used in their product. His champagnes come from the first press of grapes which produces a high-quality champagne that is low in sulfites. As a businessman, Thomas looks for businesses that he can expand into new markets and markets that are usually untapped; he believes he is somewhat of a disruptor when it comes to looking at new business opportunities and new ventures. His key questions are always, “How do I expand

the marketplace?” “Is there room on the playing field for my product?” “Can I create a new path and frankly a new source of revenue by using a slightly different business model?” Thomas takes pride in the fact that rooted in all that he does, he has a commitment to giving back to the community through both his foundation and the activities his company gets involved in within the community. Last year Thomas announced a joint partnership with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and THINK450, the NBPA’s innovation arm, which focuses on helping NBA players form business relationships. As a former President of the NBPA, Thomas understands the importance of showing players the opportunities that exist and helping them develop their ideas. As chairman and CEO of ISIAH International LLC, a holding company with a diverse portfolio of business ventures and investments, Thomas has invested in, owned, and operated new and existing businesses, including Isiah Real Estate, TAND Properties, and Popcorn Indiana. He also co-founded the Toronto Raptors, who enjoyed Cheurlin Champagne as a featured choice of champagne for the Raptors after their NBA Finals victory over the Golden State Warriors in June of 2019. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to announce the Class of 2020, presented by Fifty-Five South Ventures. This incredible group of honorees will be enshrined in Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday, August 29, 2020. In light of the unique circumstance surrounding the Class of 2020, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Election Process Committee made the decision to suspend the Direct Election Categories for one year with the exception of the International Committee. This distinguished class includes honorees from the North American committee, Women’s Committee and International Committee. Each finalist received a minimum of at least 18 out of 24 possible votes in order to be elected. Enshrinement festivities will begin at Mohegan Sun, in nearby Uncasville, Conn on Friday, August 28th with a brand new Tip-Off Celebration and Awards Gala. The Class of 2020 and over 50 returning Hall of Famers will then journey to Springfield, Mass to enjoy the newly renovated Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame before the customary Red Carpet Show and Enshrinement Ceremony at historic Springfield Symphony Hall on the 29th. Another new feature for this year is the Hall of Fame Springfield Celebration Day on Sunday, the 30th. This community-focused event will welcome friends and fans to visit the Hall and partake in the energy and excitement of this year’s festivities. TAMIKA CATCHINGS – Catchings is a 10-time WNBA All-Star and four-time Olympic gold medalist. After winning WNBA MVP in 2011, she led the Indiana Fever to a WNBA Championship in 2012 while collecting WNBA Finals MVP honors. She played her entire 14-year WNBA career with the Fever, while being named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year five times and Rookie of the Year in 2002. As the WNBA all-time steals leader, Catchings was named a member of the WNBA Top 20 Players in the league’s 20-year history in 2016. With Pat Summitt’s Lady Vols, Catchings won an NCAA Women’s National championship and was named a four-time Kodak First Team All-American, as well as the consensus National Player of the Year in 2000.
TIM DUNCAN - Duncan is a 15-time NBA All-Star and an eight- time member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team. He is also a five-time NBA Champion with the San Antonio Spurs, having earned Finals MVP three times. In 2002 and 2003, he was named NBA MVP and in 1998 he won Rookie of the Year. Duncan is the only player in NBA history with 1,000 or more wins with one team, which he amassed in his 19 years with the Spurs. He is ranked in the top 10 for NBA all-time rebounds and blocks leaders. As a college athlete at Wake Forest, Duncan earned ACC Player of the Year and was a unanimous First Team All-American in 1996 and 1997. In 1997, he also collected the Wooden, Naismith, Rupp, and Oscar Robertson Awards, while being named AP College Player of the Year.
KEVIN GARNETT – Garnett is a 15-time NBA All-Star and 2008 NBA Champion with the Boston Celtics and he is widely regarded for his passion and intensity on the court. A nine-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection, he led the league in rebounds for four consecutive seasons and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. While playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2004, Garnett led the league in total points, field goals made and total rebounds while earning

NBA MVP. He is ranked ninth in NBA’s all-time leaders for rebounds. With USA Basketball, Garnett earned an Olympic gold medal in 2000. Garnett played 21 NBA seasons and is currently ranked fourth in all-time minutes played with 50,418. KIM MULKEY – Mulkey has led the Baylor Bears to three NCAA National Championships and ranks third all-time among head coaches in win percentage. In 2012, Mulkey was named the Consensus National College Coach of the Year earning the Naismith Coach of the Year, Associated Press College Basketball Coach of the Year, WBCA National Coach of the Year and USBWA National Coach of the Year. As the head coach of Baylor since 2000, she has guided her team to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances including 13 Sweet Sixteens, eight Elite Eights and four Final Four appearances. Her Baylor squad has also won 10 Big 12 regular season championships and 10 Big 12 Tournament championships, earning her Big 12 Coach of the Year honors seven times. Mulkey is the first person, male or female, to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach. EDDIE SUTTON – Sutton is a four-time National Coach of the Year, eight-time Conference Coach of the Year and the first coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools in the NCAA Tournament. Sutton ranks in the top ten among Division I coaches in all-time victories and has recorded only one losing season in 37 years of coaching.

He coached Oklahoma State University from 1991-2006 and tied the conference record for wins by a firstyear coach with 24. Collectively, Sutton guided his teams to three Final Fours, six Elite Eights and 12 Sweet Sixteen appearances. RUDY TOMJANOVICH – Tomjanovich spent 34 consecutive seasons with the Houston Rockets organization as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He was named The Sporting News NBA Coach of the Year in 1993. He is the only person in NBA history to score 10,000 career points as a player and win 500 career games with two championships as a coach. Tomjanovich led the Rockets to NBA Championships in 1994 and 1995 and is one of three coaches to win an NBA championship and an Olympic gold medal. He led USA Basketball to a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. BARBARA STEVENS – Coaching in the collegiate ranks for over 40 years, Stevens is the fifth coach in NCAA women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career wins. She has been named the Russell Athletic / WBCA Division II National Coach of the Year five times and Northeast-10 Coach of the Year 15 times. As the head coach of Bentley University since 1986, she has guided her team to 22 25-win seasons and 10 trips to the Division II Fab Four, including a national championship in 2014. Stevens was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.. PATRICK BAUMANN – Recognized posthumously, Patrick Baumann greatly contributed to the game as a longtime FIBA executive and a member of the International Olympic Committee for more than 10 years. He initially joined FIBA in 1994, rising through the ranks and earning the title of Secretary General in 2002, a title he held until his untimely passing in 2018. He primarily focused on the youth sector and the expansion of 3x3 basketball as a global game, while developing programs and events to grow basketball worldwide. A native of Switzerland, Baumann held a number of positions on several esteemed sports councils and advisory boards and was a basketball player, coach and referee prior to joining FIBA.

The award, instituted by the Basketball Hall’s Board of Trustees, annually honors an international or national figure who has contributed greatly to the game of basketball. Outside of Enshrinement, the John Bunn Award is the most prestigious award presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame.

HALL OF FAMERS VISIT THE US MINT FOR CEREMONIAL FIRST STRIKE
On February 24, 2020 United States Mint Director David J. Ryder hosted members and supporters of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame at a ceremonial striking of the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Dollar Coin.

During his remarks, Director Ryder stated that “every day, across the Nation, the United States Mint connects Americans through coins, and it is our great privilege to connect America to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.” He went on to announce that “the most unique feature of these coins is that they will be the first-ever colorized coins produced by the United States Mint! The silver dollar is one of three coins in the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program. The Mint will also produce a five dollar gold coin and a half-dollar clad coin as authorized by Public Law 115-343 in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. All three coins will be dome-shaped and share the same designs on each side. The obverse depicts three players reaching for the ball in unison, reflecting how the sport of basketball has brought together diverse people around the world through a simple, universal, and unifying athletic experience. Their arms are slightly elongated to emphasize the full exertion of physical and mental energy required to excel in this sport. The common reverse design depicts a basketball about to pass through the net - capturing the energy and simple elegance of the game. The Mint will produce and issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 half–dollar clad coins. Surcharges collected from coin sales—$35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin, and $5 for each half–dollar coin will benefit the Hall of Fame. Deep in the Hollywood Hills, where celebrity homes line the streets and stars of all kinds shine so bright, stood one of the world’s finest collections of sports memorabilia. Actor and director Penny Marshall, known for her role on Laverne and Shirley as well as her behind the camera work for A League of Their Own and Big, had been a passionate sports fan dating back to her early days growing up in New York City. What started with a love for her hometown New York Yankees developed into a lifetime pursuit of memorabilia and ephemera representing her love of baseball and basketball. Penny Marshall passed away December 17, 2018 at the age of 75. One of the entertainment industry’s pioneers was gone but her legacy lived on through her work in television and film and her love for sports would be passed on for generations to witness. In the 1993 Penny Marshall Trust, she decided that upon her death, all her basketball-related memorabilia that she had been collecting her whole life would be donated to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This incredibly generous gift includes hundreds of artifacts ranging from game-worn jerseys

and sneakers, autographed basketballs to rare photographs and unique and personal souvenir items. As in life, the journey matters just as much as the destination. In order for this collection to make its way to Springfield, the Hall of Fame’s curatorial team made the trip to Los Angeles to package up this assortment of memorabilia that was even better than had been speculated. On top of the breathtaking views of Los Angeles from the backyard sat a collection of items that spanned multiple sports and multiple eras. Penny dedicated more than 2,000 square feet of her home to showcasing her most prized possessions. “Walking into that space was like walking through sports history,” Alex Pedro, a junior curator said. “The sheer number of pieces she had was overwhelming. You could tell how passionate she was about sports.” Her collection didn’t stop and start with just one sport or one specific team. Penny loved basketball, but she enjoyed other sports like boxing, football, and baseball. She was a fan and in turn, those players and teams were fans of hers.

“All along the walls were photos of Penny and players from Dennis Rodman to boxing legend Muhammad Ali,” Alex Pedro recalls. “She also had game-worn jerseys that were personalized to her from players that she had become friends with.” Whether it is a baseball from her hometown Yankees or a jersey gifted to her from a player after a big game she witnessed courtside, everything has a story and that is what makes this collection so special. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is truly grateful for the donation made by Penny Marshall and we look forward to displaying these artifacts in our newly renovated museum in 2020.
