Poss Angus Annual Bull Sale 2025

Page 1

Welcome Friends and Cattlemen

Welcome to our 2025 Annual Production Sale! It is truly a pleasure to write this letter as we sit in one of the greatest times ever recorded in the cattle business! This has been a long time coming and it is because of people like you all who have stayed the course with your perseverance and determination that we are now able to enjoy these incredible markets. Looking ahead we feel that fundamentally these rewarding markets will be here to stay for the next couple of years; and can’t wait to continue watching our friends and customers reap those premiums we are seeing in the feeder calf market. With what started out as one of the wettest May and June’s on record for us it quickly turned into a long period of time before we saw any rainfall. Whether you are still in those drought stricken areas or you endured the horrendous effects of the hurricanes on the east coast, our thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

This year we will bring to you not only our largest offering to date, but what we feel is hands down the best set of bulls we have raised from top to bottom. This offering will also include our commitment to feedback from our customers by continuing to grow our fall program to be able to offer you the largest set of age advantage bulls we ever have. Although repetitive to hear us say every year that this is the best set of bulls; it is our belief that through our extensive embryo program, and laser focused breeding program that we should be seeing a drastic improvement year after year. We will offer more than 40 sets of flush mates this year, therefore allowing you to select for more consistency in your herd. Every bull in this offering has been DNA tested using AngusGS. All bulls are guaranteed for the first breeding season, if you have a problem, please get ahold of us. Satisfied customers are the foundation of our success.

The goals of our program have never changed. Our idea in mind is for these cattle to thrive in any environment you ask them to work in. These bulls have been bred and developed for you, the commercial cattleman, in mind. We expect these cattle to calve easy, come in heavy at weaning time, perform in the feeding sector, hang a big carcass that grades with the best of them, and yet still produce a desirable set of females that you can be proud of. Although this may come with challenges, based on our harsh culling practices, we feel that those goals are improving each and every year. Because of our customer base, we get to work every day towards our goals, giving us the opportunity to do what we love. Our family and team are extremely thankful and blessed to have your interest in our program. We value your input and we have you and your operation in mind when we make decisions at Poss Angus.

Our team at Poss Angus has worked diligently to bring our best offering to this sale. We are very thankful for the relationships we have gained through the friends and customers that have trusted us along the way in this business. Please feel free to call any of us as we would love to visit with you about your operation and how Poss Angus bulls can be a source of power, growth, carcass and maternal genetics for your cow herd. We look forward to seeing you Friday, February 7th at the ranch. Lunch will begin at noon and be sure to stick around for our prime rib dinner and refreshments following the conclusion of the sale.

Maternal Plus

Are you buying bulls from a maternal and data driven herd?

Many breeders in today’s world like to say they are top breeders of maternal genetics without the commitment to measuring it. It would be the same as breeding for performance without collecting weaning and yearling weights. We believe maternal function is defined by a combination of measurable and immeasurable traits.

At Poss Angus, we are committed to producing bulls that will sire practical and problem-free females. Over the past six years, through the enrollment of MaternalPlus, we have been able to provide a data driven cowherd, while adding cowboy common sense into this multi-faceted approach. With this new approach, we are better able to identify cows that are worthy of propagation or elimination. With this combination we are now offering a more predictable product for our customers.

With both approaches in progressing maternally relevant traits, we are relying heavily on both sides to not only make breeding decisions, but to make even more informed culling decisions. With a zero-tolerance for any cows that fail to meet our criteria of any of the maternal traits we measure, we are quickly bringing up the bottom end of a cowherd.

We have earned the MaternalPlus designation by meeting the national inventory reporting requirements, and providing not only ourselves but you the customer with the information needed to make effective selection decisions. This voluntary designation is designed to capture additional reproductive trait data and expand reproductive and survivability tools.

What data are we collecting and submitting to build the maternal EPDs at the American Angus Association?

Udder Suspension and Teat Size. Udder suspension and teat size are critical for newborn calves to receive colostrum in a timely manner. The first day of a newborn calf’s life is essential to its future health and performance. Udder quality plays a large part in that calf getting its needed nutritional requirements. Every cow is scored annually for both traits.

Claw and Angle. Foot quality is vital to the longevity and long-term productivity of a beef animal. Every cow is scored annually for both traits, and taken into effect.

Heifer Pregnancy and Cow Fertility. Cattle reproduction is the largest economic driver of turning a profit in the cow-calf business. We are continually applying more selection pressure on our cowherd by mostly retaining females that are a product of conception in the first two cycles of the breeding season. All breeding data and ultrasound results are submitted annually.

Docility. Like any other trait, we believe there is an optimum range for the docility level of cattle to make superior maternal females. Identifying and culling animals on both sides of the extreme and keeping the ones that fall in the middle is our goal. Cows that are mean and flighty are unacceptable for safety. Cows that fall short in mothering ability and require extra attention are not desirable either. All cattle are scored for docility as yearlings on the ranch.

What are the immeasurable traits of maternal function that we use cowboy common sense to track?

Mothering Ability. Not only do we not have the time or the want to do a cow’s job for her when she calves, but we understand that it is unacceptable for our customer’s as well. We have a zerotolerance for cows that choose not to get their calves up and going immediately after they calve. Cows that mull or walk away from them are no longer accepted within our cowherd.

Calf Vigor. We have come to the understanding that it is an almost perfect science, when calves need attention at birth because of lack of vigor, it is most likely to reoccur at some point in their life again. Calves that never receive their full amount of colostrum in a timely manner will most likely never reach their genetic potential. We have made an effort to identify calves that have lacked vigor at birth from different sire and cow lines in hopes of creating bulls that will sire calves with excellent vigor at birth.

Fleshing Ability. Multiplying genetics that can easily hold their flesh throughout all phases of the year is a focal point of our cowherd. Like most of our commercial customer base, we expect our cowherd to forage and be self-sufficient without supplementation well into the winter months. With the fence-line weaning method used on our heifers they are kept on grass until early fall when they are then turned onto corn stalks until the early part of March. We use this period as a selection pressure to assist in identifying which females cannot thrive in tough conditions.

Physical Analysis. Phenotype can be a valuable tool. At calving time, every female is evaluated. If a female is undesirable in any category, she is instantaneously removed from her group and culled. With this ability every female is identified on a single basis to make sure we are only replicating our best females. When selecting females for the replacement pen, wedge-shaped, deep ribbed females with a feminine design are an absolute must.

Explanation of Data

BIRTH TRAITS

CED EPD Higher number equals more calving ease.

BW EPD Reflects size of calf at birth; smaller number equals more weight.

Actual BW Ratioed and incorporated into the EPD.

Calving Ease Stars We scale our bulls on a 1-4 scale based on the data we have and our knowledge of the pedigree to give you the best idea of what the bulls are most suited for, for breeding.

Calving Ease Stars

Our bulls have been sorted into four groups of calving ease stars.

HHHH HHH HH Heifer bull with excellent calving ease Heifers and cows

Best suited for young and mature cows Best suited for mature cows

MATERNAL TRAITS

Dam’s Nursing Ratio Average weaning ratio of offspring produced by the dam in her time. We feel that this is an excellent opportunity to give more detail at what the cows behind the bulls are accomplishing.

Dam’s Calving Interval Defined as the number of days between a cow’s successive calves. Another tool we have decided to add that shows the fertility to the dam’s behind the bulls. Cows who breed up AI year after year are the most profitable and usually in the ballpark of 365 days.

Note: ET donor’s will be exempt due to conventional flushing, requiring them to remain open to do so.

HP EPD a selection tool to increase probability of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season.

MANAGEMENT TRAITS

Claw Set EPD (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle EPD (Angle) , is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.

PERFORMANCE TRAITS

Performance traits are expressed in pounds. Weaning and yearling weight EPD’s are predictors of the ability for those pounds to be transmitted to offspring. This year you will notice we have only included the ratio’s for weaning and yearling. We feel that this is a better indicator of the individual performance compared to the rest of the herd. With rising input costs, this is a great tool to determine actual performance with management integrated. Embryo calves that are a product of IVF technology and/or were raised on a commercial recipient automatically ratio 100.

If interested in seeing actual weaning and yearling weights, get ahold of us and we would be more than happy to send them to you.

WW Ratio Weight adjusted to 205 days, ratioed in contemporary group and incorporated into EPD.

YW Ratio Weight adjusted to 365 days, ratioed in contemporary group and incorporated into EPD. Yearling bulls yearling weight ratio will be included in supplement sheet prior to sale.

CARCASS TRAITS & VALUE INDEXES

CW EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MARB EPD expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

RE EPD expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increaded selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

Feedlot Value ($F) is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B) is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared of other sires.

Combined Value ($C) an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

Sale Bulls

Winchester was the high selling bull of the 2022 sale to ST Genetics, and has since gone on to be one of the high selling semen bulls in their elite lineup; and was ranked #23 for registrations this last year. The Winchester progeny are full of mass and substance that are big barreled and long sided. Winchester boasts an impressive combination of high indexes and top notch phenotype. He has a strong backing, maternally influenced pedigree, and will sire herd impacting females. The flush sisters to Winchester are some of the very best females in our herd with most of them finding a spot in our donor pen. Flush sisters include 1513, the $80,000 feature at Kern Cattle, 1501, the $100,000 feature at Linz Heritage Angus and Antczak Angus, and J002, $90,000 feature at Point Pleasant. We are anxiously anticipating our first wet daughters by sale time, as they were one of the best sire groups for breed up this spring.

We could not be more excited to start off the 2025 sale offering with none other than one of the most exciting flushes produced on our ranch. This dynamic duo of flush brothers push the needle even further into the progress of ultimately trying to create the ideal animal with performance, carcass and the number one factor of commercial profitability, maternal cow power. Look for this flush to set a new precedent in creating predictable genetics that will elevate the commercial producer in creating cattle that reap the benefits in every sector of the business.

Their dam is a herd favorite with unmatched femininity, capacity and foot quality. She has become a pivotal part of our donor pen and has now created the leadoff flush in our production sale for two years in a row. A maternal sister to some of the greatest animals to ever leave our program such as Maverick (Herbster), and Relevance 1915 (Sitz and Hamilton). Her mother was a foundation donor for us and is now a centerpiece at Point Pleasant and Lancaster. The genetics of 5163 carry as much weight in this offering as any. Poss Pride 0604 is in ownership with GMC Farms, WV; look for her son by Pendleton who is also a feature in this offering as well.

The Winchester x Pride mating strikes again, this time crossing with the $11,000 highlight of the 2024 Female sale to A&B Cattle, Poss Pride 0623. The phenotypic and genetic dominance of Lot 3 represents the thrilling possibilities of what his young sire has the capability to bring to the cattle industry. His dam is as good as they come and the model type of female we strive to produce. She was a major player in our ET program and will continue to do the same for her new owners. Her ability to transmit maternal power with an elite genetic profile is unmatched. As an own daughter of 5163 the great 5163 we feel that her best days are just getting started.

Big flashy figures on this Winchester son out of the phenotype favorite of the 2024 female sale that sold for $28,000 to Katie Colin Farms, GA. Much like his paternal brothers offered in this event, Lot 5 is a curve bending specialist that will sire calves light at birth and mash down the scales at weaning and yearling. One of the visitor favorites on summer tours for his commanding presence and incredible performance. His Pathfinder dam was our very best Playbook daughter and was a crowd favorite on the recent female sale. Her entrance into the donor pen was earned the old-school way and her level of injecting proven performance with robust, soft rib shape and ultra-feminine is the type of cows we look to replicate over and over. Her flush by Deadwood and Armstrong are highlighted in this offering and continue to meet the expectations she has created.

Backed by two of the legendary cows in the breed, 6502 and Y69; the maternal cow power of this flush is second to none.

Their dam is a full sister to Baldridge Pappy, who is most notably known as the sire of Pendleton, was acquired from the Baldridge herd. Identified as a female that would transmit the ability of creating long lasting, productive females, her sons look to do the same. A consistent duo for their type and kind that are a true product of our embryo program.

Their dam is the proven and valuable 648, who has taken performance and maternal functionality to a whole new level. She is responsible for producing numerous sale highlights such as Wrangler and Valley. She has daughters working in some of the finest herds in America. A direct daughter produced the second all time high selling bull, Poss Pendleton to Edgar Brothers and Dixie Valley. Her genetic influence is heavily seen not only in this offering but within our herd. She is now in ownership by Eagle Grip Cattle, CA and Abernathy Ranches, WY. Her influence has already been felt in our herd with 149 genomic progeny as of this writing. Her sons by Gable and Pappy will be major sale attractions in this same event as well. Lot 14 is a calving ease Winchester with big time carcass figures and backed by one of the most proven cow families in our herd. A moderate framed individual that will create a fancy set of daughters. The granddam is responsible for producing several sale highlights in prior sales. A maternal brother was one of the high selling fall bull’s in last year’s event going to Stracke Land and Cattle.

These three flush brothers represent one of the most genetically superior flushes we have ever produced. Their conformation, soundness and cow power are tailor made for the commercial ranchers looking to stay progressive. The flush is led by Lot 15 who is one of the most visually impressive bulls for his masculinity, breed character and overall power and performance. Look for these brothers to leave a very impressive set of females behind and create a pen of steers that will grade with the absolute best in the business.

To those familiar with our program, this flush combines two of the most prominent cows to ever walk our pastures. The dam is one of the hottest cows in the breed at this time and is none other than the $200,000 valued GAR Sunrise 2016. Her debut offering in the 2023 sale stole the show when 11 flush brothers by Clarity averaged over $20,000. Her ability to transmit and excel in every category makes her a valuable part of the Angus breed. She has produced numerous herd bulls in a short amount of time. At 9 years of age she is still as valuable as ever. Her progeny by Remington, Pendleton, Deadwood, and Armstrong are highlighted in this event.

Here is a pair of calving ease flush brothers that are expected to propel fertility and production merit. They are led by Lot 50 that is as uniquely bred with a data profile second to none. One of the true elite bulls on paper and carries that weight in person. These brothers are functional and driven on cow power. It is often unheard of to come across authentic power bulls with calving ease credentials that maintain elite maternal projections like this headlining set of flush brothers.

The dam is an up and coming headliner in the fall herd with a bullet proof pedigree. The influence of her cow family is second to none and responsible for several high sellers such as Ratified, Ultra and Palisade. She will be a noteworthy female for years to come.

Ratified

20055483

Ratified was the $90,000 selection of the 2022 sale by Katie Colin Farms, GA and Wilson Brothers, NE. Ratified has gone on to see incredible use throughout the Angus breed in some of the top Angus herds via AI and ET. Ratified froze over 300 units of semen on his very first jump at 12 months of age. His first calf crop exemplifies the same characteristics of moderate stature, high performing with marbled muscle, and a highly maternal pedigree. We look for the Ratified daughters to hold an elite status in our cowherd for years to come, with the first daughters entering production this winter. The dam has now entered production for Katie Colin Farms, and continues to gain value for her owners each and every day.

A dynamic set of flush brothers with undeniable power and the type and kind that commercial cattlemen from around the country will gravitate towards. The blending of Ratified with one of our favorite maternal sisters to Maverick presents this topnotch flush that will be herd builders for anyone. These bulls have the ability to bring predictable genetics that flourish in the performance world. Backed by a strong foundation of maternal genetics, they will redesign a cowherd with consistency, fertility and productivity.

Their awesome, massive bodied, perfect footed dam is an outlier in terms of creating muscle shape, and overall Angus character. She has consistently created progeny that match those terms, and continues to place daughters in our replacement pen each and every year. As a maternal sister to Maverick these bulls will have a bright future in place much like Maverick has. Maternal brothers by Clarity were sale highlights in last year’s sale going to the Storer’s, Graff’s, Cosgrove’s and Bud Harvey.

A landmark flush of five brothers that could very well be one of the most impressive sets of brothers with calving ease credentials ever born on the ranch. They are headlined by Poss Ratified 4557, who is one of the most eye appealing bulls you will find anywhere in the land with his genetic predictions and overall phenotype. He is in a league of his own when considering calving ease, feed intake, maternal traits, performance and carcass merit. A late February bull that holds his own in a pen full of January born bulls. He will have legitimate AI stud potential. Rarely do we find a flush this deep with the extreme calving ease yet still carry the performance and incredible muscle definition that is consistently found in this flush.

Their young dam was a sale topper at the 2023 Foundation Female sale in Denver when we partnered with GMC to acquire this incredible female. She is a combination of crossing the carcass oriented Fireball with the longstanding tradition of maternal and performance excellence known to be found in the Circle L herd in Montana. Since then, he has gone on to create industry-wide pandemonium because of his elite combination to add eye appeal, front end extension, and depth of body. When you combine his incredibly balanced EPD tabulation, Rawhide easily becomes one of the most appealing sires for every facet of the industry.

The Rawhide progeny have so far elaborated into everything we have expected and more, due to his excellent ability to sire consistency within his sire group. His ability to create cattle with substance, ideal growth curve, sound structure and excellent disposition; is part of why we feel Rawhide is one of the greatest breeding bulls we have ever produced. Lot 111 will move the needle forward for those looking to improve the basic traits of functionality and maternal qualities. He exhibits muscle mass, power and masculinity. The bottom side of his pedigree is built with maternal stalwarts in this herd; the dam is a maternal sister to the great 6502 sired by the Pathfinder sire Playbook that has consistently been known for siring some of the best females in the breed. A maternal brother was a sale day favorite last year selling to the Finney’s and Maurer’s.

A stout, smooth made Premium son that has all the tangibles for a cow makers package. A larger framed, soggy made individual that is power packed with performance. A maternally oriented bull that has the ability to sire a fancy set of females injected with rib capacity. His dam is a larger framed Achievement daughter with femininity and a solid production record. She stems from the famous Blackbird cow family that is responsible for producing the multi-million dollar producing Sandpoint Blackbird 8809. A maternal brother was a sale feature to Jonathan Schlender last year.

Another slam dunk calving ease Premium son that is built with an incredibly favorable EPD package. Added carcass traits with a performance pedigree. The dam is a larger framed Home Town daughter out of the famous 648 cow; and a maternal sister to Wrangler and the dam of Pendleton.

Schiefelbein Gable was added as an outcross heifer bull that would add overall muscle definition, functionality and maternal cow power. The Gable progeny have proven to make him a sleep all night heifer bull, and then instantaneously put all weight on the gas pedal. One of the highest indexing sire groups from this last year, and surely to be a favorite by all on sale day. We feel that the females by Gable will be his greatest achievement when it’s all said and done.

Dam is a hard-working female that brings a good one in every year. With a late calving date last year she was able to get moved back up to the first cycle this year due with a Ratified calf. A maternal brother by Rawhide was a sale highlight in the 2022 sale to Skull Creek Ranches in Saskatchewan, Canada.

POSS VALLEY 4084

The dam is one of the deepest ribbed females on the ranch and comes from the Everelda Entense cow family that has been a staple for longevity.

An impressive new sire group by Prestige that was used for clean up on the best set of replacement heifers we have ever produced. 4192 is an example of that mating combining the longevity driven Prestige with the balanced trait 2628. A larger framed powerhouse that is built with performance and muscle mass. Combining proven and predictable genetics with fresh, new and exciting genetics that give hope to what is to come to the Angus breed. Often it is difficult to find the package that has performance, carcass and maternal in an added frame.

The impressive, feminine, perfect uddered dam is an outlier in terms of creating maternal genetics with performance and carcass merit; yet not denying Angus breed character. She is on the fast track to stardom and will be a major influence in our cowherd for years to come, as one of the early favorites for carrying on the genetic line of the Blackcap cow family. Eleven flush brothers to the dam averaged well over $20,000 in the 2023 sale. Flush brothers include: Poss Vigilante, Poss Devoted, Poss Ridgeline, Poss Longbow and several others working for other purebred and commercial operations.

Modest birth with moderate frame in this Prestige son that stacks up generations of elite females. Genetic predictions rank him in the upper percentiles of the breed for growth, carcass weight and ribeye. The dam is a functional, moderate framed Colonel daughter.

crossing the carcass leader Crosswind with the dominating flush sister to Winchester and Remington brings us this outstanding Lot 199 that is a new outcross for longtime customers. A slam dunk calving ease bull that has legitimate performance with a little more frame that is not common for his pedigree.

The dam is none other than the great 1501 who was a show stopper of the recent female sale when she topped the offering for $100,000 to Linz Heritage Angus and Antczak Angus. Her influence in our herd is undeniable and her story will continue to be a great one for the new owners. The substance and dimension coupled with her brood cow look, perfect udder development and near perfect foot quality make her one of the rare females in the breed. Her mother is responsible for some of the most in demand bulls in the breed such as Winchester, Remington, Rawhide, True Test, Outlaw, Dependent amongst many others. The legacy of this great cow family has already garnered all the value necessary but the story has just begun.

Stylish profile on this ultra-calving ease Crosswind son. A rare combination of heifer pregnancy and maternal value that is nontypical for the pedigree on this bull. Crossing the carcass leader with the high maternal Blackout worked out well here. The Blackout daughters have been some of our most consistent females on the ranch. Their genetic influence has been incredibly positive for us. The dam is a moderate framed Blackout daughter that is massively designed with power and substance. Jindra Acclaim#

Although deep in the offering, be sure not to miss this standout from the first offering by Thunderstruck. We feel that this is a logical way to start a new and exciting sire group that will have a much larger presence over the course of the next couple years. Certified curve bender that is larger framed without sacrificing the rib shape and capacity with an impressive numeric package that will catch your eye. In the flesh, he is incredibly impressive with a strong foundation of females on both side of his pedigree. Cadillac was identified as an outcross heifer bull at the 2021 Connealy Spring Sale, where he was a standout in one of the best sire groups there. He brings an incredible amount of maternal cow power to the stage front, combining the great Tehama Tahoe with Confidence Plus; if you’ve been in the Angus business you know that is a maternal prowess pedigree to be reckoned with. Cadillac will sire light birthweight cattle that still have the ability to get up with lots of vigor and put on the pounds. This bull was utilized through a small amount of AI as well as clean up on the replacement heifers. Look for these sons to possess excellent amount of width, muscle and great structure.

A triple threat feature of outstanding herd bulls that dominate for physical presence, and arguably one of the most visually impressive flushes of bulls offered this year. Sired by the rare and popular Pappy, and crossed to the popular 648. A sure bet to sire muscle, masculinity and sound structure. These bulls have all been standouts since birth and that has not changed. They are intrinsically designed to create ultra-thick, smooth made and ground breaking performance in a maternally oriented combination. These brothers move with authority and move like a cat. Five flush sisters have been retained in the herd with the first ones entering production by sale time.

Their dam is the proven and valuable 648, who has taken performance and maternal functionality to a whole new level. She is responsible for producing numerous sale highlights such as Wrangler and Valley. She has daughters working in some of the finest herds in America. A direct daughter produced the second all-time high selling bull, Poss Pendleton to Edgar Brothers and Dixie Valley. Her genetic influence is

heavily seen not only in this offering but within our herd. She is now in ownership by Eagle Grip Cattle, CA and Abernathy Ranches, WY. Her influence has already been felt in our herd with 149 genomic progeny as of this writing. Her sons by Gable and Winchester will be major sale attractions in this same event as well. This will be the last year to acquire sons of this great cow through our operation. A flush brother was selected by Justin Driessen of Minnesota last year.
