Buck Ridge Cattle Co. Fall Production Sale 2024

Page 1

Welcome to our Second Annual Fall Sale!

We are happy to offer this set of bulls, open females, and bred females for your appraisal. 2024 has been a record year in the cattle business and we hope you all have received some much-deserved success in marketing your cattle thus far. The all-time low inventory of beef cattle coupled with the great people across the country raising them, has us at BRCC very optimistic for the coming years. The sale will take place at our headquarters here

in Southern Wright County and we will have online bidding available through DV Auction. Come early to enjoy the fellowship amongst friends and cattlemen. Sale day has become a favorite time of year for us to visit with so many great people. We will have a special guest, Corbitt Wall, in attendance on sale day. Come early to enjoy a meet and greet with him. He has a wealth of knowledge in the cattle industry. Lunch will be served starting at 12:30 pm with the auction to follow at 2:00 pm.

These cattle represent our breeding philosophies well and are accompanied by all the performance data to allow you to make the most informed decision. We hope as you study the sale information you can appreciate our dedication to raising balanced cattle with above average growth and carcass traits built in while keeping maternal function, fertility, and phenotype at the forefront of our breeding criteria. At Buck Ridge, our cattle are managed on fescue pasture year-round just like our commercial cattleman neighbors.

BRCC bulls sell with a breeding soundness exam and are a part of a full herd health protocol administered by our veterinarian, Dr. Michael Spragg, DVM of Spragg Veterinary Clinic. We are thankful for his great service, knowledge, and friendship over the last 20 years.

Buck Ridge Cattle Company is a family owned and operated operation. We take a huge amount of pride in that statement. We know firsthand the time and financial commitment that our customers have invested in their farms, ranches, and cattle. Our passion for raising the best quality genetics and selling them at fair value is as strong as ever and we are excited about the future of the beef industry. This sale would not be possible without the efforts of many and for that we are thankful.

In closing, thank you for the taking the time to look at our offering. We are extremely honored to continue to work with our repeat customers and would be grateful for the business of first-time customers. We know there are plenty of places to buy bulls. Our commitment to you is that we will be working hard every day to improve our cattle and provide the upmost support for our customers in any way we can. Please feel free to call, message, or stop by anytime to look at the offering or discuss any questions you might have.

Thank You & God Bless, Mark Haden, Logan Haden, and family

UNDERSTANDING THE DATA Angus

Production

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Maternal

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$Values

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight.

Beef Value ($B), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are

Conclusion Sons

Leading off the 2024 Fall Bull sale is a pair of half-brothers, sired by VAR Conclusion. Lot 1 and Lot 2 are bulls that have led the pack from a young age.

As you will see, both are heavy muscled and stout. This type of muscle, mass and phenotypical presence coupled with the ability to add marbling to a calf crop makes these guys dynamic breeding machines. Study the data and you will see that they cover the bases well. Something not as obvious but of extremely high value at BRCC is the female behind them. Both brutes were raised by first calf heifers, who rebred via AI, and are currently nursing their 2nd calf. We have found that females that meet this mark, are amongst the best!

ANGUS BULLS

Rob Roy Sons

The first sons to sell from senior BRCC herd sire, Musgrave Rob Roy. He brings performance, muscle, excellent foot quality, and maternal power. These sons are no exception. Their heifer mates are also stamped with the same performance and phenotype that closely resembles his mother, the great Musgrave Prim Lassie 329. Performance, predictions, and cow power in a breeding package.

Baldridge Guardian is a sire you have seen represented here before and will continue to see in the future. We observe an extra shot of muscle, mass, and length of spine in his offspring. These sons represent him well and are amongst others that have worked well in our customers’ herds. BRCC Miss Beauty 0002 on the bottom side adds the maternal predictability of the Miss Beauty cow family. She is a moderate made, deep sided female with a perfect udder.

Maternal and Growth Traits

Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease.

Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Scrotal circumference (SC): Is a good indicator of age at puberty, and is a highly heritable trait. EPDs for scrotal circumference are expressed in centimeters, with higher values indicating genes for larger yearling scrotal circumferences of sons and earlier puberty of daughters.

Docility (Doc): Predicts genetic differences in the probability that offspring are scored a 1 (docile) or 2 (restless) as opposed to 3, 4, 5 or 6 (nervous to very aggressive). Higher EPD values for docility represent genetics for calmer behavior.

Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease.

Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves.

TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.

Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Carcass Traits

Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib. Smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Mainstream Terminal Index ($MTI): Predicts genetic differences in profit per carcass by combining the potential for and value of postweaning growth, quality grade and yield

Leading off the Lim-Flex division of bulls is BRCC Genetic Values 3518L who brings outcross pedigree, physical presence, and excellent EPDs. 3518 adds an extra shot of muscle which helped him record an 120 WW ratio and 116 YW ratio. He brings off the chart EPD predictions full of growth, carcass, and maternal function. His dam, granddam, and great granddam are proven producers at BRCC and backed by top-tier, home raised herd sires HBRL Accurate 372A and HBRL Gateway 9511G. The great LVLS 9066U donor who has produced too many herd sires to list rounds out the top side of his maternal pedigree. Let his breeding excellence go to work in your herd!

Rob Roy x 9576 Sisters

An exciting offering that helps paint the picture of the future cowherd here at BRCC. These 3 flush mate sisters are sired by senior herd sire, Musgrave Rob Roy. His first daughters are stamped with performance and phenotype that closely resembles his mother, the great Musgrave Prim Lassie 329. They are tough to let go but they performed and exceled just like we hoped the Rob Roy progeny would. As you can tell, it is no coincidence that the Miss Beauty cow family is on the bottom side. Their donor dam, BRCC Miss Beauty 9576 brings the predictability of cows that get it done on fescue pasture with good feet and udders with an extra shot of marbling. Performance, predictions, and cow power. You can have it all.

FALL OPEN HEIFERS

SS Merchantile Sisters

SS Mercantile H87 is the type of herd sire who will leave a legacy through his daughters for years to come. He first surfaced to the top at the 2021 Midland Bull Test where he exhibited excellent muscle expression, rib shape, and an overall balance that the commercial cow man needs in his herd. His story is still young and while he left several breeding pieces at BRCC he currently roams the pastures of the prestigious Angus herds at Musgrave Angus and Baldridge Performance Angus. Mercantile is a top 2% $M and top 4% $C sire. The bottom side of these females are cows who work and have worked great in the BRCC herd running on fescue pasture. They perform well and have daughters working in the herd.

ABOUT BUCK RIDGE

BUCK RIDGE CATTLE COMPANY is owned and operated as a family partnership in Southern Missouri on over 2,000 acres of fescue dominant pasture and hay ground. Our headquarters are located in Wright County. The BRCC operation started with very humble beginnings and has been in a constant state of growth over the last 20 years since those first 9 commercial cows were purchased.

It has become our life’s passion to raise cattle and make the best product possible for our customers. We currently breed around 400 females annually using artificial insemination or embryo transplant. The BRCC cow herd is managed using rotational grazing with stockpiled fescue being our primary winter feed source. The cattle are expected to perform well and breed back in a short window while on pasture with minimal supplementation. Our Angus and Lim-Flex cattle have built in traits to ensure they will perform in the pasture and feedlot. The Buck Ridge breeding philosophy focuses on fertility, growth, and carcass merit by utilizing EPDs and data collection.

We love to visit with folks about our operation and how Buck Ridge bulls can improve the profitability of our customers’ cattle herds. God has blessed our family with the

and

that make

Ridge and we are very excited to continue growing our cowherd in the future.
