Keep it between the ditches
I was asked once by a new customer “What’s your breeding philosophy? What sets your program apart from the rest?” Now I’ve never been much for “catch phrases” or “sales words” but I told the customer “Were pretty black and white around here. Our goal is to help our customers Keep It Between The Ditches”. Sounds simple right? “Keep it between the ditches”. In reality, running this program is the most time consuming, complicated thing we do. Just ask my wife. But what it really means is this: Every day we are bombarded from every direction with news, information, and to be honest, a lot of B.S. It is our job to sift through all that noise to make your life easier and your herd more profitable.
The hallmarks of our herd are good cattle that excel first in fertility, both bulls and females. Open cows are expensive. Live calves on the ground are crucial. Mothering ability, calf vigor, and the ability to keep that calf alive until weaning are hard to measure. Yet they are some of the intangibles we watch every day. For example, we’ve eliminated entire sire groups because we lost confidence in the female progeny’s colostrum quality. But we don’t quit once we get that calf weaned. Every animal here stays until they become someone else’s breeding stock or enter the food chain. There’s a lot of time to learn about your genetics between weaning and final destination. We make the notes and implement changes to ensure that throughout the entire production cycle, you have a smooth ride with our genetics.
I have always had a balanced approach to our herd. Extremes make averages but we won’t be a part of those extremes. Fifteen years ago, my family only ran a commercial angus herd. Having grown up on commercial cows, I would like to think our approach to the seedstock business is different from most. When you call myself or my brother you are talking to the managers, the laborers, and the grunts. The guy that makes this catalog also tags the calves, feeds the bulls and the fat cattle, breeds the females, and watches the business. Simply put, we run like most of you. That being said, we don’t get caught up in the numbers, the pedigrees, or the next best thing. It is our approach to breed cattle that make your life easier. Lower your blood pressure you might say. Bad attitudes, poor fertility, bad udders, and high maintenance cattle don’t make it here.
If you take one thing away from our program we want it to be this: We are here for you! We promise to continually work hard to make our cattle and in turn, your cattle better and more profitable. And will always be a resource for help improving your cattle, marketing your cattle, and being a listening ear.

WELCOME TO BARTELS ANGUS
Fellow Cattlemen,
The Bartels Family would like to personally invite you to join us on Tuesday, March 18, for our annual production sale. We are excited for you to evaluate this year’s bull crop. I can say with confidence, this year’s bull crop is the best we’ve ever produced with outstanding bulls throughout.
With a cattle market that shows no signs of slowing down it’s a great time to be in the beef business. Without a doubt, we are living in a time of the highest feeder and fed cattle prices on record. Demand for the steers and replacement quality females you produce will be unprecedented. The nation’s cow herd is as small as it has ever been and the genetics you select will be an important part of the females used to rebuild in the years to come.
The bulls themselves have been developed on a high roughage ration meant for soundness and longevity. We pulled the feed back a tick on the bulls this year but they have performed well.
A couple things to note as you study the offering:

*We continue to emphasize a greater distinction between cow bulls and heifer bulls. We want our cows to have a solid calf at birth that is more in line with what these good black angus cows can do. We also want our heifers to calve unassisted, nurse a vigorous calf that can take the cold, and breed back in a timely manner. Some of the extreme calving ease bulls available today are shortening gestation lengths and reducing birthweights to a point where their calves just aren’t very productive or healthy.
*We continue to focus on foot quality. According to USMARC data, today’s angus cows are on average, the heaviest of any breed. With extra weight, there needs to be extra emphasis put on foot quality and structure.
*We emphasize the carcass weight EPD. We feel like carcass weight is the most honest measurement of an animals yearling potential. If you really dig into the data, generally as birthweight goes up so does carcass weight and red meat yield. In the next three to five years the way they measure carcass yield is going to change and those that plan ahead with their genetic purchases will be rewarded.
*Maternal design still reigns supreme and every bull we sell comes from a female we would be proud to show you. The dams behind these bulls are exclusively bred to improve fertility, maternal design, and udder quality. I refuse to breed cattle with bad udders. We think every bull in the offering has a chance to improve these aspects of your herd.
*Due to the extreme weather in mid-February, we were delayed in collecting yearling weights, scan data, and scrotal measurements on the spring born bulls as our processing barn was packed full of calving cows. This data will be collected and available online several weeks before the sale and as a supplement sheet on sale day for you to study.
We realize there is a bull sale every day this time of year and know you have many choices in seedstock providers. That’s why we want your experience to be much more than buying a bull. Our goal is to build relationships and to help you become more profitable. We want to genuinely thank all of our customers who have been with us for years. We appreciate your business and confidence in us. Your loyalty means the world to us! For those of you looking at our program for the first time, we welcome you, and want you to know we are committed to helping you be successful.
We value the time spent before the sale discussing your herd’s needs and goals and welcome you to the ranch anytime to evaluate the bulls. We thank you for your interest and love to talk cattle, so feel free to call anytime.

thoughts on birthweight
Long ago in a classroom in Lincoln at the University of Nebraska, they told us that every pound of birthweight transmits to seven pounds of weaning weight. In today’s market, that’s a lot of money. If that math holds true, an 80 pound calf will generally wean 70 pounds heavier than a 70 pound calf. Five weight steers are currently bringing over $3/pound. That extra birthweight can be worth over $200/head. Remember that a 6 BW EPD in Angus is equivalent to a Simmental 4.1 and a Charolais -0.4 according to across breed EPDs from USMARC in Clay Center, NE.

They are fertile with excellent udders, disposition, and feet. Generally they are “right sized” for our environment and have done well.
DAM’S WWR 1@87. This is a big flush of outstanding bulls. Like most Haydays, these bulls are long bodied, soft sided, and fluid in their movement. They are also clean made and sharp fronted. Their outstanding dam is the best Asset daughter we have raised and is a maternal sister to Bartels Brina Lee 3031 5048, the dam of Bartels Navigator and Bartels Big Easy. 9070 is perfect uddered, easy keeping, and an efficient producer. This group of bulls is exclusively ET calves or natural calves from our ET donor cows. We selected many of the best cows we own to produce this set of bullet-proof age advantaged bulls. The genetic merit of these bulls is outstanding and we feel that they have the ability to move most any cow herd ahead in multiple areas. Buy with confidence and use them hard. Their progeny will have tremendous value.

CONNEALY COMMERCE

Connealy Commerce is a true curve bender with excellent calving ease, and tremendous growth. The Commerce calves do many things well and we anticipate his daughters to be outstanding.

DAM’S WWR 3@99. Recommended for heifers. These Commerce flush brothers are peas in a pod. Long bodied, wide chested, and moderately made. The calving ease here is real and we can confidently call these sleep-all-night bulls. There are numerous flush sisters to these bulls that look very promising. Dam is an outstanding producer with a perfect udder. She is also the mother of Bartels Bold.

DL ZOOM

DL Zoom was a bull I found at Nebraska Bull Service while picking up bulls on collection. His power, mobility, foot structure, and length made him a bull I had to use. These sons are impressive and out of some outstanding females. Look here if you sell by the pound. More are in the system for next year.

thank you to our crew!
We also want to take an opportunity to say “Thank You” to our family and our great crew. Craig and I are blessed to be surrounded by a great group of guys that always jump into whatever the project is. Eric Antholz and Dan Marks have been here since I was in kindergarten! They handle the day-to-day operations of our crop operation and much of the mechanic work we have. Chris Goebel is our Jack of all trades and handles everything from calving and breeding to haying and irrigating. Kasey Ord is our livestock specialist and manages the feedlot and much of the chute work around breeding season. He also helps with some of the haying duties and much of the grain handling. Aaron Sterling, the newest guy on the crew, has been with us since October. He spends his time assisting with the feedlot cattle, bulls, and now, calving. Those of you in this business also know the time commitment involved, and we know we couldn’t do it without the help and support of our families. Craig and I also want to take a moment to say Thank You to our wives and kids, as well as our parents. The support and help they give is immeasurable and we are thankful for it every day!

DAM’S WWR 1@100. Recommended for cows. Flush brothers to lot 37. Be sure to pay attention to birth dates as these bulls are not all the same age. This entire flush is perfect footed, quiet, and heavy. Never have we raised such a large group of bulls with so much potential. You will drive a lot of miles to find another group of bulls with so much power, pounds, and maternal excellence to back them. Their dam, Black Ceyla 0024, has already made her mark here and will be a feature moving forward. Her sons by Prolific and Real McCoy highlight this year’s offering. Her son by Benchmark was our third high selling bull last year going to Nick Risse in South Dakota. Grandam, Black Ceyla of Conanga 0267 has created her own story as she is the dam of Connealy Finnegan and Connealy Southwind (ABS) along with Montana Black Ceyla 2026 and Montana Black Ceyla 2115.
