Edwards County AIC Milk Mustache Contest For over ten years the Edwards County Ag in the Classroom and Prairie Farms has offered a Milk Mustache contest at the Edwards County Fair. Each year brings lots of grins, smiles, and laughter as participants try to make a milk mustache that will win them a prize of free Prairie Farms products along with other added goodies from AITC. This year’s contest reached a high of over 100 participants. Each participant was offered a cold carton of milk thanks to John Fishel with Prairie Farms. The 2021 Edwards County Fair Queen, Hayley Buester, joined in on the fun, helping a few shy ones at making a milk mustache. Volunteers from the community assisting AITC were Edwards County FFA members Sage Alka and Tara Michels, Tara Buester, Unit Coordinator with the Edwards County U of IL Extension, and AITC Coordinator Jane Jones and her husband, Tony Jones. This year’s winners were Maggie Garcia in 0-3 category; Dean Mewes in 4-10 category; Madison Miller in 11-18 category; and Kristen Harris in the 19 and older category. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for joining in on this fun event. We missed John Fishel, as this was his first time of being unable to participate in the event.

Carmi Family Dental - Free Dental Day

By Meghan Fearn Smile. It’s free! Or at least one dental service will be free at Carmi Family Dental through their annual “Free Dental Day” event. On Friday, October 1st the doctors, hygienists, assistants, and staff of Carmi Family Dental will all donate their time and resources to provide a day of free dental care to the community. Free Dental Day began in 2013 as a way for the dental office to give back. Over the years it has grown and has become a favorite day of the office staff. Free Dental Day will begin at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, October 1st. It is open to anyone without dental insurance who is 18 years old and older. Those interested do not have to be existing patients and can choose between a cleaning, extraction, or a filling. Last year over 100 people were treated in the one-day event. There is no appointment necessary as services will be offered on a first come/first serve basis. Those interested should be prepared to wait for their service and consider bringing a lawn chair, blanket, and reading materials. While waiting, patients can enjoy scrambled eggs and coffee served by Dr. Timothy Rosers’ family. Free Dental Day is a way for Carmi Family Dental to reach out to those who may not otherwise be able to afford dental care. Through this day, Dr. Roser, Dr. Voyles and all of the staff at Carmi Family Dental will work towards their goal of “Creating Confidence. Smile After Smile.” For more information, follow the Carmi Family Dental Facebook page.

Extraordinary volunteers inducted into Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame Illinois 4-H volunteers empower and prepare youth for success as the program relies on its more than 15,000 volunteers to fill key leadership and mentoring roles. Longtime volunteers and former staff members were recently honored by the Illinois 4-H Foundation for their selfless dedication to the University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development program. In 2021, 71 individuals received the Foundation Hall of Fame Award, presented during a virtual ceremony Aug. 17. Four of the honorees are being named posthumously. The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2005 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Those inducted have a track record of exemplary service to 4-H or outstanding career and community achievement and were nominated by either county University of Illinois Extension staff or by the Illinois 4-H Foundation Board. Each inductee receives a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion. “These volunteers are a model of 4-H values,” says Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director. “All of our volunteers are valuable, but this award honors those that go above and beyond. These are volunteers that helped shape not only individuals, but generations of 4-H members. The Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization. Illinois 4-H programs reach nearly 120,000 youth each year through 4-H clubs, camps, educational programs, workshops, and conferences held in communities, schools, parks, and homes across Illinois. Volunteers fill key leadership and mentoring roles throughout the state. “Many volunteers have a tradition of 4-H in their family or were 4-H members themselves,” Barnard says. “More and more though, adults brand new to the 4-H experience are seeing the value of the life skills development program and volunteering for the first time. 4-H has volunteer opportunities that fit such a wide variety of time, skills, and talents.” In Edwards County, Derra Williams was selected as the 2021 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee. Derra following in her family’s footsteps, being in 4-H was a guarantee for her! Derra is known for her great personality and her willingness to keep her 4-H Club going strong. Derra has been the leader of the Yankees 4-H Club for fifteen years. She is an asset to Edwards County 4-H and her efforts are appreciated. Wabash County’s IL 4-H Hall of Fame Nominee was Mike Wilson. Mike Wilson is a longtime supporter of the Wabash County 4-H program. He serves on many different boards in Wabash County and is always willing to lend a hand. In the 4-H program, Mike has served as our Rabbit superintendent and as a club leader over the years. Mike has a passion for the agriculture industry and helping the youth. You might have even caught him judging your poultry or rabbit show before. During fair week you will find him cooking up some delicious meals. Congratulations Mike and thank you for being an outstanding volunteer. The Illinois 4-H Foundation raises private funds that are invested in Illinois 4-H programs that provide meaningful, positive development experiences for Illinois youth to develop leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Edwards County Community Impact Donations

The Edwards County Farm Bureau recently donated $10,000 split evenly between four community groups. “Spring 2020 until Spring 2021 was a very challenging and trying time in our community, our schools, and the world. Somehow, by the grace of God, we all made it through. Throughout the pandemic our organization was blessed in many ways. Because of that, the Board chose to bless each organization with a $2,500 donation,” stated Jason Balding, president of the Edwards County Farm Bureau. The Albion Grade School PTO, West Salem Grade School PTO, and Wells Elementary School PTOs each received $2,500 to spend however they will choose for their schools. The Albion Park Board received $2,500 to use towards bathroom improvements for the pool. “It is our hope that this generosity does not go unnoticed and will be an asset to each group. These organizations have been an asset to the community and our residents. Each organization was negatively impacted by the pandemic, and we wanted to change that,” Balding stated.

2021 Edwards County Paint Out

By Meghan Fearn Edwards County has beauty in abundance. With many antique buildings, town squares, fields, farms, and pastures, the possibilities of capturing beauty through art are endless. On September 25th, the Albion, Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the West Salem Development Association invite all artists to do just this! The Annual 2021 Paint-Out Edwards County will take place at the Country Financial Hall with canvas stamping between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. All canvases must be stamped prior to being painted. Artists are free to explore the county to see what catches their eye. When that special place is found, they can set up their easel and begin painting with any medium they prefer. The artists participating can take a break and enjoy a free lunch from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. New to the 2021 event is a local amateur category. All ages are invited to participate regardless of experience. Event organizers hope professional and amateur artists will line the town squares, trade tips and stories, and draw attention to all that Edwards County has to offer. The event is free to participants and registration forms can be found on the Edward County Paint Out Facebook page or can be obtained by contacting Avery Goodman at 618445-7833. Registration is due by September 10th. At the end of the evening, all art will be exhibited in an Art Show and Sale from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Country Financial Hall. The Awards for the evening will be presented at 8:00 p.m. and include the following: Professional Plein Air Awards: Best of Show $250, People’s Choice - $250, Best of Edward County -$250, Best of West Salem - $100 Local Amateur Awards: Best of Show - $250, Best of Edwards County - $250, People’s Choice - $100, Best of Albion $100, Best of Bone Gap - $100. (Only professional plein air awards will be available for purchase.) The public is invited to attend and participate throughout the day. Whether it be as an amateur artist, by purchasing that perfect piece for your home, voting on the People’s Choice Award, visiting with the artists throughout the day, or just browsing the days works. It is sure to be a day full of creativity and ending with the opportunity to enjoy art that highlights the beauty of Edwards County.

Wabash General Hospital was honored by NRC Health as a recipient of its 2021 NRC Health Excellence Awards, which recognize topperforming hospitals and health systems in overall patient-satisfaction ratings. The 2021 NRC Health Excellence Awards are given each year to an elite group of winners that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to improving the care experience, earning top satisfaction ratings from patients and their families. Their desire to better understand patient needs and aspiration to design experiences that inspire loyalty embody the NRC Health mission to bring Human UnderstandingTM to healthcare. Wabash General Hospital was selected for its first-place ranking in Excellence in Patient Experience of small hospitals (hospitals under 100 beds). “We are very proud to recognize the amazing organizations that have continued to put their patients first even in the face of an unimaginable crisis,” said Helen Hrdy, Chief Growth Officer at NRC Health. “We commend these honorees for their service and passion in providing outstanding care for patients and their families and for truly embracing our mission of Human Understanding. Congratulations, Wabash General Hospital for this well-deserved award.” WGH’s President & CEO Karissa Turner stated, “We strive to provide high-quality, cost effective health care to enhance the quality of life for Wabash County and surrounding communities. Small Town People

By Meghan Fearn One of the advantages of living in a small town is the fact that everyone knows everyone. Granted, there are times when that may seem like a dis-advantage. However, I have found this to be something I truly enjoy. Wherever you go in a small town, you are likely going to run into someone you know. My quick trips to the store for milk, almost always end up in hour long visits with a childhood classmate or a church friend. Knowing the people of the community gives a comfortable and safe feeling to a small town. Even if you don’t know the person well, there is a familiarity there. And, if you truly pay attention, you will often find great examples of character, inspiration, and motivation. As I looked around me the past month, this is exactly what I found. Almost every Saturday morning, you will find Leroy Moore grilling pork chops on the square. He joyfully gives his time and talents to help raise funds for different organizations, teams, and individuals in need. Not only are his grilling talents amazing, but it is also worth it to drive by just to see his smile. He is a great example of generosity and service. Our mail is delivered by “Grandma Jo” Rector. My kids love to see her pull in the drive. She always has a kind word for them. Just recently, she was delivering the mail when the road caved in due to heavy rainfall. She suffered several breaks/fractures/bruises. However, before she would go to the hospital, she had her son-in-law help her deliver the mail to the remaining residents on that road. She didn’t want her substitute to have to go back that way. What a great example of dedication and good work ethic. Every so often, I will stop in Colyer Coffee Shop and see a group of retired Edwards County Teachers enjoying coffee and conversation. The laughter of Ms. Dewig is contagious, the kindness of Mrs. Stanhope is refreshing, the sincere care I feel from Mrs. Endsley is encouraging. All the ladies at that table gave part of themselves to help me and others learn and grow. It is a great example the impact a person can have on a child that can continue twenty years later. Belva Tate works at the Watering Can. There have been times when she has made a flower delivery to my home in a difficult season. I think her hug and sweet words were just as helpful as the flowers. She is a wonderful example of kindness and love. I could easily list 100 names of people in the community that have made a difference or serve in some way that may go unnoticed. I may not know many of them well. It may have just been a quick interaction that I tucked in the back of my memory or shared with my kids as an example of what good character looks like. Whatever they have done, it makes living in a small town special. I have found so much inspiration and encouragement in knowing the people here. I can’t help but wonder if we all took time to notice these things rather than the negative things that seem to make the news, how things could be made even better. Especially if we • FREE Food Bundles will be given away in don’t just notice it, but follow their example.
