Fearn Schools in Edwards, Wabash, and White County are back in session! Parents, students, and teachers are finding themselves slipping into a routine, learning their schedules, adjusting to new classrooms, and meeting new teach ers and students. The administrators, custodians, maintenance crews, teachers, and school staff have worked hard over the summer preparing to make the 2022-2023 school year a positive and safe learning experience for their students.

An exciting kids program!

Mt. Carmel Elementary introduced five new teachers this year. Tessa Hocking is a Mt. Carmel native and 2021 graduate of S.I.U.E and will be teaching first grade. Brandy Wright will be the kindergarten teacher this year. She is a graduate of Western Kentucky University and loves to travel. Kelsi Brown will join the Pre-K classroom and Libby Pearson and Carmen Peterson will be working with the first grade. New teachers are not the only changes that students will encounter. Several of the buildings and facilities have been updated throughout the summer. Allendale Community School has a NuToys Leisure Products playground, complete with a rubber play surface for the children to enjoy at recess. Ambassador Christian Academy students will also enjoy a new outdoor playground on their school yard. The Albion Grade School multi-purpose room has been remodeled and has new flooring. They have also finished construction on an outdoor classroom pavilion.

The beginning of the school year doesn’t happen without great effort. Janitorial and maintenance crews spent countless hours deep cleaning and freshening up the classrooms and facilities. The principals worked diligently throughout the summer finding the right teachers and preparing the administration for the year ahead. The school boards, superintendents, teachers, and cafeteria workers, all work hard to prepare and make the area schools suc cessful for the students. With the changes and additions made in these districts, it is sure to be a great year for all.

ONLINE

The Grayville School District will enjoy remodeled restrooms in their buildings, HVAC in the gym and multi-purpose rooms, and a resurfaced parking lot outdoors. In Mt. Carmel, the third floor of the school now has ductless airconditioning, bringing much relief during the heat of the day. Phase 1 of the Riverview Stadium transformation is also nearing completion. The football field has gone from grass to turf. The stadium has been cleaned up, the concrete and stairs are being filled, restored, and repainted. An all-weather, eight-lane track will be poured in the next few weeks. Phase 2 will begin in the coming year including fencing and gates along the Golden Aces Way, concessions, offices, and locker rooms. This massive redesign will host football, soccer, track, baseball, softball, and band competitions. This will be on a local level and for regional and sectional tournaments.

A few years ago, my family and I took a day trip to Southern Illinois to Garden of the Gods and Rimrock. We spent the entire day hiking trails, playing in streams, and finding treasures. At the time, we had five kids with an age span of 6 months to 11 years old. I wore the baby in a carrier and my husband carried a backpack with diapers, snacks, and drinks. We took our time, letting the kids splash in the water, go off the path to find neat rocks, and to let little legs rest. We had a wonderful day and turned towards home tired and hungry. Because our plan was to find a restaurant where we could stop on the way home, we had only packed snacks. It was poorly planned. If you have been that direction at all, you know that the places to eat are few and far between and cell service is sketchy at best. As we pulled out of the park, there was a small sign with an arrow that said Restaurant – 10 miles. As hungry as the kids were, we decided to take a chance and head that direction. It took us longer than it should have to find the town and the restaurant. From the outside, it looked like a little mom and pop diner where grandpas stopped every day to get coffee. “Perfect!” I thought. We unloaded the car and headed inside. It was then that I wished we had done a little more research about where we were headed. This wasn’t a little biscuits and gravy, fast food diner. We had walked into a nice, quiet, and dimly lit steak joint. I quickly looked down at my five kids. They were wearing old, mismatched play clothes. After an entire day in the woods, they were filthy! I looked down at my own outfit and over to my husband and whispered, “We can’t eat here, we look terrible!” He agreed; but at this point, the hostess was already preparing a table and listing off the prime rib special. Deciding it would cause less of a scene to just sit down, we got everyone settled at the table, cleaned little faces with wet wipes, and started reminding the children how to behave in a restaurant. Thankfully, they were so tired and hungry that they were on their best behavior. As they brought out our food, we chatted about our favorite parts of the day and enjoyed being off our feet. At the end of the meal, the baby was asleep in my arms. I had almost forgotten what a spectacle we must have been and just enjoyed a nice dinner. It was then that our waitress came to our table and told us that there would be no check. Someone had anonymously paid for our meal. We were shocked! Feeding steak to a family our size is not an inexpensive ven 9:30 am Sunday School 5 p.m. Team Kids - Grades 1st-6th & Youth - Grades 7th-12th Pastor Dennis Seidel BaptistMissionaryChurch North State Road, Grayville

One of the kids asked me why someone would do that for us. Trying to turn this into a lesson for them, I replied “Well, maybe they saw you being on your best behavior and wanted to reward you.” My oldest daughter scoffed and quickly responded, “No mom. Look around. Someone felt sorry for us!” I looked around the table at the dirty clothes and shoes. I realized that the kids had eaten every crumb off of their plate in record time. My husband and I burst into laughter! We really did look like a starving family who needed help. I’ll never know who paid for our supper that evening, but it really touched my heart. It reminded me of what God has done for us. We come to him broken, sinful, dirty, and worthy of death. He takes us, just as we are, and gives us the free gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, and makes us a child of the King. Praise be to God! Scripture states, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

The church held a dedication service committing all future plans to the Lord and asking for guidance on how to use this building for the glory of God. One of the upcoming events includes an evening for high school students called Ignite. This will be held one Sat urday a month, with the next one on September 11. All high school students are invited to come in for an evening of food, ping pong, music, foosball, coffee, games, and chatting. The goal of the event is to simply get to know the youth of the community, to build relationships, and to point them to Jesus. Two weeks after each Ignite, the building will be open to provide High Schoolers with a place to just hang out also. The committee will continue to use the building as a tool to serve all members of the community. Whether it is a produce giveaway, Bible studies, or ministering to people during parades and festivals – the possibilities are end less. Shad shared “We aren’t sure all that will take place in this building. We purchased it knowing this is where we need to be. We are keeping it open to anything God leads us to do with it. We will just love them, point them to Him and He will do the work.” To keep up on what will come next, just watch the building windows, download the West Village Christian Church App, or follow Ignitenow on Instagram. The best is yet to come.

The members of W.V.C.C. take the commission written in Matthew 28 to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations” very seriously. The church services, youth groups, and Bible studies located in the church building are open to the community and provide a great way to learn and grow in Christ. Those who visit the church will find this mission at the center of the ministries they offer. Recently, members of the church have felt called to “go” in a more literal sense. They wanted the ability to love on the community from within and to be a servant presence from the heart of the town. When the EC Fitness Gym came up for sale, they purchased the building to use as a tool to serve the community.

A committee was formed including Ja son and Campbell Biggs, Shad and Lindsey McKinzie, Maggie Moore, Whit ney Owings, and Bonita Thomason. The building is an open canvas. Other than some painting, it did not require a lot of remodel or updates.

This building, located at 20 West Main Street has historically served Edwards County as an ac counting office, a fitness gym, and even a pool hall. Recently, it has been purchased by the West Village Christian Church and will serve a brand-new purpose – spreading the love of Jesus.

Another Session of GriefShare, a Grief-Support Ministry, to be

GriefShare, a biblical, Christ-centered grief support group ministry, is being offered at General Baptist Church in Mt. Carmel on Mondays at 6:30 pm from September 12th-December 5th, 2022. Churches, family, and friends often encircle the griever in the immediate days surrounding the death of a loved one. GriefShare is designed to help in the long months after the funeral, when those around the griever return to “normal” lives. Navigating the grief journey isn’t easy, but GriefShare helps people as they travel the road from mourning to experiencing joy again.

The ministry provides 13 weeks of meetings where the GriefShare group will watch a video seminar featur ing top experts on grief and recovery subjects. These videos are produced in an interesting television magazine format featuring expert interviews, real-life case studies, dramatic reenactments, and on-location video. The 13 videos are “self-contained” so a person can start and stop at any time. It is recommended that each participant commit to three weeks of GriefShare to be able to evaluate it fully. Sessions may be difficult at first, but with the information, encouragement and support, the grief process does get easier. The 13 session topics are: 1) Is This Normal? 2) Challenges of Grief 3) The Journey of Grief – Part One 4) The Journey of Grief – Part Two 5) Grief and Your Relationships 6) Why? 7) Guilt and Anger 8) Complicating Factors 9) Stuck 10) Lessons of Grief – Part One 11) Lessons of Grief – Part Two 12) Heaven 13)What Do I Live for Now?

The support group sessions include a time to talk about the GriefShare videos and opportunities for partici pants to share their challenges and victories (if they so choose). Group members receive a workbook to help them sort their thoughts and emotions and help them discover what God says about their situation. The workbook contains a daily Bible study, weekly journal, a gospel presentation, and tear-out Scripture cards. Workbooks are $15, but scholarships are available if there is a financial need. For more information, visit the GriefShare website: www.griefshare.org. or call the General Baptist Church at 618-263-3477. Some have experienced multiple losses of family members. Most photos in the Hometown Voice are submitted.
