Finding nightlife in East Volusia County isn’t difficult. There’s always something happening somewhere. The area also has several districts where there are multiple places to check out. From Granada Boulevard CECIL G. BRUMLEY in downtown MANAGING EDITOR Ormond Beach to Beach Street, Main Street and Seabreeze Avenue in Daytona Beach to Canal Street and Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, it’s easy to hop from place to place. There’s also the Boardwalk, Volusia Mall and West International Speedway Boulevard area, and the Pavilion at Port Orange. Those are just a few of the places, scattered throughout the area are more night spots where there’s action throughout the week, and then it really gets going on the weekend. One entertainment offering that has increased in the past couple of years is dancing. There are now dance clubs springing up and clubs you can join. Of course, there is an extremely laid back vibe you also can enjoy, especially with waterfront night spots that offer dining, music and dancing. While the music scene isn’t huge, there are a multitude of places that offer live music, some of them just about every night. East Volusia is a great area to be in October. With Biketoberfest and Halloween, the entertainment choices explode. We hope we give you a few ideas in this month’s issue of Forever Young, but we also hope you have better luck than Dan Smith in telling the real cops from the fake cops.

Put on your party shoes

By Jacque Estes For Forever Young

There’s more to Daytona Beach than surf, sand and race cars. When the sun goes down, the nightlife offers a variety of entertainment for all ages. Seabreeze Boulevard off State Road A1A in the heart of Daytona Beach is one focal point of nighttime entertainment, from stand up comedy to live bands. A large selection of bars, restaurants and nightclubs are all within walking distance within the Seabreeze entertainment district. With the soft salt air breeze off the ocean, the walk is as enjoyable as each destination. Grandview Live on Grandview Avenue features a Bonkerz Comedy Club, dueling pianos on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. and a bar lounge with craft beer and cocktails. Further south on A1A, The Bank and Blues Club on the 700 block of Main St is at the center of another entertainment district and a nightclub favorite for those looking for live blues and rock music entertainment. Those looking for theater-style entertainment need to buy tickets to one of the Peabody Theater productions. From the adult humor of Ron “Tatar Salad” White on Nov. 2 to the mellow sounds of Kenny G on Nov. 12, the thrills of the Golden Dragon Acrobats on Nov. 29 and ending the year with the holiday classic, The Nutcracker Suite ballet in December, there is definitely something for everyone. “The Peabody appeals mostly to our full-time residents of various ages and gives cultural entertainment and programming,” said Helen Riger, cultural services administrator for the city of Daytona Beach. “We have everything from shows for young children to our school program and senior afternoon shows.” “We are celebrating our 65th anniversary this year in the current building. The first building burned down and funds were raised to rebuild it, but for more than 100 years we’ve been bringing entertainment to the Daytona Beach area.”

Geoffrey Davis of Port Orange dances with his wife Pao Chen during the Greater Daytona Chapter (No. 6026) USA Dance 20th Anniversary Celebration at the Gold Star Ballroom in South Daytona, Saturday Sept. 14. For more information, visit greaterdaytonachapter.org. “We have Broadway touring shows from New York, five or six shows a year, which is one kind of audience and then we have Ron White coming in November,” Ms. Riger said. Crooner Bobby Vinton is scheduled for Valentine’s Day. “We don’t bring too many tribute bands to the Peabody. We try to bring the actual performers here and save the tribute bands for the Bandshell over the summer months,” she said. Want to grab a bite to eat before or after the theater or clubbing? First you have to decide what type of food you want to eat: Japanese, Caribbean, seafood, pub food or good old fashion American burgers? The beachside entertainment districts in Daytona Beach have them all.

Trish Mucciolo, director of sales and marketing for Daytona Fun Parks, finds that some activities never go out of style. “You can take a good old fashioned walk down the Boardwalk with the family, to ride the rides and play the games,” Ms. Mucciolo said. “Instead of sitting in front of the TV, people come to play miniature golf or ride the go-carts.” Daytona Fun Parks hosts lock-in events for teens. “It’s four hours of rides and games in a safe and non-alcoholic environment,” Ms. Mucciolo said. She said the activities attract the young and the young at heart. “We get seniors who come in to ride the go-carts and play the video games. They like doing things they did when they were

younger,” she said. “Some have their grandchildren for the night and they bring them here.” For a bird’s eye view of the downtown action, board the Ferris wheel. “We really don’t appreciate what is in our own back yard,” Ms. Mucciolo said. “Ride the Ferris wheel and see the view and you realize where you live.” A bit farther south, New Smyrna Beach has it’s own eclectic nightlife. According to Samantha Bishop, executive vice president of the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce, there are no strangers here. “Our atmosphere is more relaxing and laid back,” Ms. Bishop said. “Most everyone knows one another here and if we See NIGHTLIFE, Page 6

NIGHTLIFE Q&A Samantha Bishop, executive vice president of the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce, knows her area well. She’s a graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando and a master’s of business administration from Stetson University in DeLand. Q. Does East Volusia have a nightlife? A. I can only speak to Southeast Volusia and, yes, we have a very rich and diverse night lift for those of every age and interest. Great food, great live music, theatre, the arts, car shows, street festivals, boat races, music in the parks . . . Q.Is it all directed toward the younger person or are there things for older adults to do? A.There is something for everyone. Q. Are there any dancing groups or clubs?

7

A. Yes there is a NSB Dance Club that meets weekly. For information, contact Jo Ann at (352) 430-5101 or email jforman1010@gmail.com. Q.With everyone watching their budget, is it possible to have an affordable night out? A. Yes, there are so many events and most are for a nominal fee and some are free of charge.During the summer, there is music in the park and lots of fun family and adult entertainment. Q. Halloween is coming up this month. Are there any special events planned? A. Yes, the City of Edgewater has a nice Fall Festival event, the City of New Smyrna has a Creepy Crawl and other organizations also have special safe trick or treating events. Q.What makes the nightlife in this area different than Orlando or Jacksonville? A. Our atmosphere is more relaxing and laid back. Most everyone knows one another here and we don’t know you, we

make sure that you have a wonderful experience so you will visit us again. Our nightlife opportunities mostly include local artists and musicians and they have quite a following. Most of all, we start a little earlier and the events usually wind down a little earlier to be respectful of our local neighbors. Q. How dressy does the nightlife get in East Volusia? A. It varies for every venue. We see all types of attire. Some people will be in shorts and flip flops and the ladies in sundresses to sport coats and cocktail dresses. There is never a lack of things to do in our area. There is always great live

Samantha Bishop music around town and more with the Biketoberfest activities. Q. If you wanted to tell a visiting friend the one thing they really should do while in town, what would it be? A.Choose of our many places along the waterway for fresh food, great music and great fun!

A new place to quench your thirst

By Jacque Estes For Forever Young

Those looking for life after dark in Ormond Beach can pull up chair at the Tomoka Brewery at 188 E. Granada Blvd. Two months ago, Jen Hawkins and Pete Szunyogh opened the beachside restaurant/brewery and it has already become a popular nightspot. “We are establishing regulars even though we have only been open two months,” Ms. Hawkins said. “People we are seeing here have been here four or five times before.” An establishment by the sea where everybody knows your name, the bar features craft beer brewed in Florida. The brew is bringing in folks of all ages, locals and tourists alike. “Craft beer is one of those things that a lot of different ages like,” Mr. Szunyogh said. Tourists, who include local breweries in their travel plans, have also found the new restaurant. “We have had beercationers who come in just for the craft beer,” Mr. Szunyogh said. The couple has noticed the earlier crowd tend to be in their 40s and 50s and come for dinner as well as brew. The menu features appetizers like “Really Hot Hot Wings,” salads, and an eclectic choice of toppings for the hand tossed pizza. “The younger 20-30 year-olds come in later, and we have people in their 80s who come in and drink stouts. That’s all they drink.” Tomoka Brewery is more than a bar. “We are a restaurant,” Ms. Hawkins said. “I like to pair the food with the beer. Our menu items either have beer in them or they go well with beer.” The couple have a lot in common with their customers. It was their enjoyment of craft beer that resulted in them both leaving their day jobs to embark on opening their own business. “We enjoyed craft beer and got

We wanted to get back into the restaurant business.” “We’ve traveled to 40 breweries in the state,” Ms. Hawkins said. “We went to different breweries in the state and learned from them and tried our own at home.” These travels led to co-op brewing with other licensed brewers, including Engine 15 and Green Room Breweries in Jacksonville. Still waiting for some tanks and more importantly, their federal inspection and brewing license, the couple hope to be brewing on site in

October. The first original beer to come out will be Ms. Hawkins’ own creation, “Elvis peanut butter and banana.” The emphasis regional beer and a sign over the bar encourages customers to “Drink like a local.” “The Southeast has been lagging behind the rest of the country in creating a craft beer movement,” Mr. Szunyogh said. “But more breweries are opening in the state.” Mention Halloween and their eyes light up. Mr. Szunyogh, who is from Hungary, had never celebrated Halloween, but he joins his Floridian wife’s love of the holiday. “We will have some food pairing with beer and some creepy food,” Ms. Hawkins said. “We will have

Octoberfest just like in Germany from Sept. 22 to Oct. 12 with a special menu that will include brats, big pretzels and pumpkin beer.” Plans are being made to use the patio as a beer garden or a spot for live music on the weekends and open mic on Sundays. The restaurant is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 3 to 11 p.m.; Fridays 3 to 11 p.m., or later, and Saturday and Sunday noon to at least midnight. All beer is $6 for a pint or their high gravity beer served in a snifter. High gravity beer is 8 to 11 percent alcohol. “We are officially open until midnight, but if there’s a crowd, we can stay open until 2 a.m.,” Mr. Szunyogh said.

LANDLINES The idea of throwing a Halloween party is usually better than the actuality of it. As we make our way through the year, fits of boredom sometimes suggest having a dress-up party could be fun. The reality of it always comes up short. Years ago we sent out invitations to a costume party with a pirate theme, but no one dressed up. Oh, I had an eye patch, a peg leg and a fake parrot attached to my shoulder and my wife did a pretty good imitation of a wench, but the only guest who showed up in a pirate suit was the weird guy from down the block. His Jack Sparrow turned out to be even more effeminate than Johnny Depp’s and came across more like the rock musician Prince. That memory was usually all it took to end any thought of a cos-

tume party, but back in the late ‘90s we decided to throw the mother of all Halloween parties. Remember when everyone was saying that? Thankfully you don’t hear that stupid phrase much anymore. Anyway we were intent on throwing this big costume party and much to our surprise, all of our friends, neighbors and family seemed willing to participate. Some had their outfits weeks ahead of time and many stopped by the house to proudly give us a preview. I had to admit there was some pretty good get ups. Most inadvertently went with the Village People look and some had on animal suits.

Sure it was hard to tell the gorillas from the bears but what the heck, they were at least trying. Late on the afternoon of the party our place was jumping with activity. There was food to prepare, ice to buy and booze to stock the bar. Just about the time we began receiving guests I had a phone call from the only neighbor we hadn’t invited. I didn’t want to take her call cause I was sure she had smelled a rat having seen the guy in the big purple dinosaur costume that arrived early. When she answered she told me that something strange was gong on at Wilbur’s house. Wilbur my next door neighbor was elderly and in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease but a good friend. When I hung up I walked over to his house and sure enough, a severe looking Ford sedan was in the driveway. Did I mention

that Wilbur was stone deaf? Yep, couldn’t hear a thing. When I arrived at the front door it was open and I could hear a commotion from inside. Following the sound I came to the bathroom where Wilbur was sitting on the throne with his pants around his ankles and his arms in the air. “Don’t shoot me! Take what you want.” He shouted to two men who were standing over him. The two men were in dark suits with fake shiny gold badges on their belts and were holding fake guns. “Hey hold on you two,” I laughed. “You’re at the wrong house. The party is next door.” “Run Dan, they’re going to kill us,” Wilbur screamed. The fake cops turned the guns on me and identified themselves as real Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies. DINING By Jacque Estes For Forever Young

The Beaver Bar on U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach is quickly becoming a local favorite. “We are a restaurant,” owner Leslye Beaver said. “We have a full menu and a full bar, not just a bar menu.” Ms. Beaver describes her customers as an eclectic mix, much like the customers at her two South Carolina restaurants also called “The Beaver Bar.” “We have that at Myrtle Inlet, too,” she said. “We cater to everyone from old school bikers to seniors and children.” The diversity was obvious as we sat down to a dinner of Banging Spicy Fish sandwich combo and the all you can eat Fish Fry. Monday through Thursday features a different “all you can eat.” Older couples, bikers and folks stopping by after work enjoyed the food.

The Beaver Bar is much more than that Between the laid-back atmosphere and support from patrons in South Carolina, it appears this restaurant is here to stay. “When we opened for our first motorcycle rally in October 2012, there must have been 200 bikers from Myrtle Inlet waiting here for me,” Ms. Beaver said. “I am floored at the local support and the biker support I have received.” Diners must decide whether to sit inside and enjoy the large screen TVs or outside under the live oak trees dotted with picnic tables and wooden rocking chairs. Chairs that have names, including “Mama Beaver, Papa Beaver and Time Out.” Some of the chairs have been named for customers. “The big old oak trees to me makes everything,” she said. As customers rock under the oaks, they soon realize they are not alone. A variety of different animals are

attached to the trees, providing a whimsical flare and the challenge to find as many as possible. Finding the location was serendipitous. “Somebody saw this (property) and called me and told me to stop by and see it,” she said. “We saw it in June and opened in October. It’s just awesome being on U.S. 1. To me there’s no better place than U.S. 1.” The two-acre lot provides ample free parking for Bike Week events. “We have $2 beer and we do not raise our prices during events,” she said. Tuesdays and Thursday nights are dollar taco nights and on Sunday the $5 breakfast buffet serves more than the customers. “Our Sunday breakfast is all you can eat for $5 and proceeds are donated to families in need in the area,” Ms. Beaver said. “The food is donated by the bar so that all of the money goes to

families. Recently we gave $500 to the Children’s Home Society.” Our server, Mary Foss worked her way up from customer to bartender. “I live close and enjoyed coming here and one night I asked, do you need any help? I’ve been here since,” Ms. Foss said. “It’s a fun place to work.” Weekends include live music, starting with Kids Rock the Nation, a group that promotes self-esteem through music and gives guitars to children during the open jam sessions. Entertainment continues on Saturday and Sunday with local bands. Wedding receptions have also been at the Beaver Bar. “We don’t charge you to use the restaurant,” said bartender manager Jeremy Griffin. “We will set up an area with buffet tables. We also do birthday parties.” See BEAVER BAR, Page 11

As it turned out, Wilbur had come in from working in the yard and gone to the bathroom to read the paper. Recently he had a security system installed and had forgotten to disarm it when he entered. That sent a call to the cops who showed up and I suppose figured Wilbur was a burglar who had gotten caught short. Wilbur couldn’t see the badges from his angle and when they told him who they were, he couldn’t hear them and assumed he was being robbed. They turned the guns on me and began asking questions about drugs. They wanted to know why I was trying to

show exactly where they lived. The most important book you may find is the “A” volume of any set. Book A is the first records recorded when the county was formed. This book may also have names of families from adjoining counties, especially if the other counties were formed later. Deed Book A contains the land records for the very first settlers in the area. These early deeds may contain the buyer or seller’s place of origin, where he lived before or even where the seller has moved before this transaction. Take time to start at the beginning of the book to find out who was there. You may find your

family members have witnessed transactions before they actually purchased land themselves. Marriage Book A will contain the first marriages preformed. These books not only name the couple being married, but the name of the bondsman, official who preformed the marriage and the witnesses. You may find unknown middle names or initials, or be able to connect family members you did not know about. There also will be Will Book A, containing the first probate records. The executor or administrator was usually a close friend or family members. These were also witnessed. If a person died in the county and owned property, the record will be there. If you have never bothered to look at every record in the estate settlement, you will be missing out on many interesting and informative

tidbits. Any transfer of money in and out of the estate is recorded. There will be a list of everything owned by the deceased, as well as who owed him money and who he owed. If the items were sold at auction, the name of every buyer will be listed, giving you names of many possible family members. Guardianship records are valuable for connecting orphans to relatives and identifying the parents. Legal guardians were required to file a yearly report to the judge for all money spent.
