New year, new you: Keeping your resolutions in 2013 As they replace the 2012 calendar with this year’s model, many folks will consider trying to remake themselves as well. Whether it’s getting into better physical shape, quitting smoking or going under the knife to get surgical changes, people just seem to have the urge to improve themselves in January. If only those urges would carry over into later months — or even just into February. Health clubs, in particular, see a surge in memberships at the beginning of the year. “Most definitely,” said Dave Lieb of Gold’s Gym in Ormond Beach. “I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and it’s a busy time on New Year’s Day and thereafter.” “Absolutely. It’s resolution time,” agreed Deb Stokes of the women-only Curves in Port Orange. Gyms take different approaches to keeping their members motivated. “We’re unique. We do a really good job of motivating our members, which helps keep the attrition rate very low — less than four percent,” Ms. Stokes said. “We call our members to encourage them to work out. The better we can serve and coach them to get results, the less likely it is they will drop out.” “We work closely with (our members) to make sure they meet their goals,” said Samantha Ertel, general manager of Anytime Fitness in Port Orange. “(For instance) we work with them and give them nutritional guidance.” But not all clubs have as much success. “That’s where we fail as an industry,” said Mr. Lieb. “We’re not finding a way to keep it enjoyable for many customers. We tell people to keep

active, even if they quit here.” If you decide to join a health club, don’t repeat some of the common mistakes other newbies make. First of all, don’t be shy about asking for guidance from trainers. Many of them are happy to offer tips and pointers about how to use various machines, or what kind of exercises might help you achieve your goals. “We do offer complimentary training sessions for newcomers,” Mr. Lieb said. “Most gyms do the same.” “Customers can be overwhelmed, especially when they hit a plateau,” Ms. Ertel said. “We give them advice on their diet and their strength training.” “Sometimes people try to overdo things and say they’re going to work out every day,” Ms. Stokes said. “We encourage them to commit to three or four days a week. Over-committing themselves is a big problem.” “You don’t have to work out every day,” Mr. Lieb agreed. “Three days a week is enough. And it doesn’t have to be a three-hour workout. It can be done in one hour.” Personal trainers can help you achieve your goals. “All my trainers are professionally trained and educated, and have lots of experience,” Ms. Ertel said. “We give everyone guidance. We’re open 24 hours a day, and there’s almost always one of them available. My trainers are here from about 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.” “A trainer can add accountability and call if a member misses an appointment,” Mr. Lieb said. “They can ensure the workout is done properly so there are no injuries. And they might be able to make it fun and fresh to help you reach your goals.” “We try to have a holistic approach, We’re not just getting them to exer-

Brenda Broome of Port Orange works out at the Beach Street Gym in Daytona Beach recently cise, but we’re also getting them to change their habits,” said Ms. Stokes. “Trainers can help take them to places they really want to reach.” It’s important to remember that the race to achieving your goals is a marathon, not a sprint, our experts said. “(The key is) setting a realistic goal and understanding the real benefits come over time,” Ms. Stokes said. “Setting small changes and sticking to them. Diet and exercise — it all goes together.” And the best motivator? “People seeing results is a good motivator,” Ms. Stokes said. “People setting goals and reaching their goals.” “When they get a little taste of success because they can see the results,” Mr. Lieb agreed. “Make the goal public. Tell your spouse or friends what you’re trying to do, and get their compliments once they see some results.” Of course, joining a health club does cost money. But memberships usually can be bought on a monthly or annual basis. “Month-to-month is $34.95, and you can quit anytime,” said Mr. Lieb of Gold’s Gym. “For a year, it’s $29.95 a

month with a signed contract.” “The longer you commit, the lower the rate, but it’s about a dollar a day,” said Ms. Ertel of Anytime Fitness. “But that also gives you access to 2,000 other clubs around the world.” “We have different programs, but one offering diet, exercise and personal coaching — everything a woman needs — is as low as $12.95 a week,” said Ms. Stokes of Curves. “We also have some exercise-only programs.” In a related vein, Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach is sponsoring the Ormond Mayor’s Health & Fitness Challenge, which is running from Jan. 6 through April 6. Spokeswoman Lindsay Rew said the hospital is sponsoring three nutrition seminars as part of the challenge: Anti-inflammatory Diet on Jan. 10, Power Breakfast and Smart Snacking on Feb. 7, and Debunking the Myths of Vegetarianism on March 14. To participate, you must register and pay a $25 fee. For more information, contact Christina Maguire, Risk Manager for the city of Ormond Beach, at (386) 676-3323. See NEW, PG 6

Of course, getting into shape isn’t the goal for many other folks. Another common resolution is to quit smoking. Programs to help you quit are available from a number of sources. Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center offers a free smoking cessation program beginning Jan. 10. It meets every Thursday for six weeks, ending on Feb. 14. “Participants are encouraged to get support by attending as many programs as they want, and can attend over and over until they are confident about being smoke-free.,” Ms. Rew said in an e-mail. “Participants are provided a book and other helpful tools along the way to make the process easier.” According to Ms. Rew, the program, which was designed by an ex-smoker and is led by a trained facilitator, will guide participants through the many issues related to quitting smoking.

FOREVER YOUNG Those include coping with anger, sleep problems and cravings; managing stress; explaining how physical activity and healthy food choices make quitting smoking easier; how to prevent relapse; and what to do when friends and family smoke around you. Registration is required and can be done by calling (386) 231-2229. After the holiday hullabaloo dies down, some people may opt for a nip or tuck here and there. “At the first of the year, people renew their interest in improving themselves by exercising more, improving their diet, reading more or whatever,” said Dr. Carl W. Lentz III, a plastic surgeon in Daytona Beach. “Some also have an interest in improving their body image.” While some patients get simpler procedures, such as botox injections, before the holidays, Dr. Lentz said, those wanting procedures requiring more extensive recovery will often wait until January to get them done. “They have a lot less social life keeping them busy,” Dr. Lentz said.

January 2013

Randy Barber/staff photographer

Brenda Broome of Port Orange works out at the Beach Street Gym in Daytona Beach recently. “Many of them also are looking for their income tax returns to pay for the procedures.” And for those patients who are truly motivated to look better, Dr. Lentz

says he can give them good results. If they’re willing to exercise and lose the weight, I can make them look more like themselves when they were younger,” he said.

Trainer: Correcting bad habits will lead to you becoming more healthy and fit By Joe Crews For Forever Young

Steve Baker is 60 years old, but he says many people look at him and think he’s half that age. Mr. Baker attributes that to his healthy lifestyle. He doesn’t smoke or use drugs, and he has never tasted alcohol. He eats only foods that don’t “poison” his body with chemicals or unnatural additives. “There are three elements to being fit,” said Mr. Baker, the owner of Beach Street Gym in South Daytona. “Healthy eating and sleeping habits, weight training and cardiovascular workouts.” Forever Young recently chatted with

Mr. Baker to learn more about how people can keep their New Year’s resolutions about getting into shape. Q. Do you see a surge in enrollments after the first of the year? Steve Baker A. Pretty much. It’s part of the culture, and people want a quick fix. But a New Year’s resolution is not a good note to get started on. If that is the motivation, they’re not going to stick with it. (Get-

ting into shape) is not a quick fix; it needs to be part of your lifestyle. Q. How many people will drop out within a month or two? A. About a third in the first month, and another third within three months. It varies, depending on the age group, but there’s no rhyme or reason. Everybody has their own motivation, whether it’s cosmetic, for health or a lifestyle change. Q. What is the biggest mistake people make? A. On the whole, people don’t care about their health. They’re undisciplined and concerned about the external (appearance). They don’t take the time to analyze the foods and products

they put into their bodies. A lot of people have no power in their lives, so they use foods (to get) psychological power. Q. How can people get and stay motivated to improving their lives? A. Come into my gym and they will be inspired and motivated. They have to reprioritize and eliminate bad habits, and they need to look forward to more positive health. Q. Can trainers enhance the experience? A. Trainers can break customers down to the ground floor and build them back up. (Trainers) can teach them to love themselves and get a positive mentality.

Area health clubs and gyms More than two dozen health clubs or gyms are located in East Volusia County, according to yellow page listings in the 2012-2013 edition of Yellowbook.com.

Kicking the habit of New Year’s resolutions If you are fortunate enough to live a long life, you are bound to pick up a few bad habits along the way. Some of those habits could even be classified as addictions. One addiction that many of us acquired early on is smoking. Most of us tried cigarettes in our youth. At the time smoking seemed innocuous enough, but some of us formed a habit for life. After all, celebrities like Humphrey Bogart and even Lucille Ball smoked on the big screen and it looked pretty cool. These days smoking is not quite as stylish as it was back then, but, despite severe health warnings and a hefty price tag, many still indulge. President Obama smokes. I know that he does because he says that he quit. Quitting smoking seldom takes. Odds are that the Prez is a closet puffer. When I was a lad of around 14 years old, an older fellow invited me into the restroom at the local pool hall for a couple tokes off of a marijuana cigarette. I was pretty impressed the old

LAND LINES DAN SMITH guy (about 19) would offer me his weed, but back then we knew very little about grass. As I took the two hits I felt very grown up, but on the way home I was terrified. What had I done? Now I had a monkey on my back — a monkey that I couldn’t possibly afford. I was certain those two puffs had turned me into a hopeless junkie. The fact I did not know how to inhale did not enter into it. I was doomed. To my surprise shaking that habit was ultra-easy. Soon I picked up another habit. I became an athlete and was hooked on working out. I ran at least one mile each and every day of my life for six years. That would include inclement weather, Christmas and the

Assassination of JFK. Nothing could stop me. Nothing but — the U. S. Army. Once I was drafted, I was sent to West Germany where I discovered German beer. Oh my! Tasty and cheap at 8 cents a glass, I was soon rolling in a very happy addiction. As it turned out, I was not cut out to be an alcoholic for too much beer and liquor made me violently ill. Thank God for small favors. Back home during the hippie days, I did drop acid a few times and although it was an amazing experience it rendered me null and void. Besides it gave me a stiff neck. Not for me. With age, I have mellowed and thankfully become less adventurous. These days my addiction is fishing. Oh sure, make no mistake about it. I am hooked on fishing. After two or three days without wetting a line, I start to suffer withdrawals. (Lack of motion sickness?) You don’t have to put a foreign substance into your body to have an addiction. Now days a lot of people are heavy

into electronics. We all see them wandering around aimlessly giving their full attention to an iPhone or iPad. Not long ago I saw a teenage girl walk into a steel pole while texting. Addictions are usually painful. Some have retreated into a darkened room to stare at their personal computer for 16 hours a day. Those people are easy to spot here in Florida. They are the ones in the fast food lines with the zombie stare and the pallid and pasty white skin in the middle of our sub-tropical summer. Of course, each January a good many of us attempt to break our overeating habit. That almost never works. Actually now that I think about it, one of the worse addictions you can have is the act of making New Year’s resolutions. Kick that habit now and live free and happy. Dan Smith is on the board of directors for the Ormond Beach Historical Society, The Motor Racing Heritage Association and is the author of a fishing book.

More than 30 years ago when I first moved to Florida, I found a little seafood restaurant in Ponce Inlet with the best fish sandwich and Key lime pie. It was a great place to take visitors, watching the dolphins and pelicans floating on the waves on the Intracoastal Waterway while we enjoyed tropical drinks. Customers could enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, watch the dolphins, visit the gift shop and listen to music on the outside deck. Through the years, Inlet Harbor Restaurant and Marina has had its

ups and downs, closed for awhile, and reopened with new owners. But the fish and key lime pie are still tops in my book. Now, new restaurant general manager Leland Lewis, formerly of Paradiso 37 at Downtown Disney and Texas DE Brazil steakhouses in South Florida, and Becky Smith, marketing director, are working to return Inlet Harbor to its glory days that began in 1936 when William Redwood Wharton founded Inlet Harbor Fishing Camp. That also was the year he purchased the “Gay Wind,” a 30-foot cabin cruiser from a boat builder in See INLET, PAGE 11

St. Augustine and traveled nearly 70 miles to a rustic fishing village, Ponce Park, at the southern tip of Daytona’s peninsula. Capt. Wharton was instrumental in growing the charter fishing boat business that continues in Ponce Inlet. Capt. Wharton built the Sand Dollar Grille in 1946, and after it burned in 1959, he reopened it as the Inlet Grille. The name was changed to Inlet Harbor Restaurant in the early 1970s. Capt. Wharton sold the property in 1984, when it then changed hands several times and closed for awhile. A group of locals purchased it in 1995, and renovated and expanded the property. I thought my companion was going to lick his plate he enjoyed it so much. Luckily I had leftovers for him the next day. We also had leftovers from the Captain’s Platter ($27.99) that included grilled shrimp and scallops on skewers and a crab cake.

The seafood was done perfectly and served with baked or sweet potatoes. My favorites were the perfectly grilled scallops, and of course the Key lime pie. Chef Nuzzo said they experimented with other recipes but due to customer demand went back to the original recipe, which my companion said was his favorite so far and didn’t make his mouth pucker. Mr. Lewis is looking to revamp the menu next month and has many ideas featuring seafood, adding mussels, new appetizers and entrees and fusion food with a Caribbean influence. Chef Nuzzo has been experimenting with dishes and also putting his Italian influence in some of them. Both Ms. Smith and Mr. Lewis said locals won’t have long waits anymore since reservations and preferred seating are now being taken.

“We listened to our locals to provide more of a value and also a friendlier atmosphere, shaking hands and greeting customers,” Mr. Lewis said. He said his father docked his boat at Inlet Harbor for many years and Mr. Lewis recalled fishing off the dock and coloring on the placemats that showed an earlier layout of the restaurant. He said in April, Inlet Harbor will be the new home of the King of the Inlet Fishing Tournament. “We want to give a little love back and be a destination for tourists and locals.” “Tourists like to go where the locals go,” he said. Tourists who catch and clean their fresh seafood from the fishing boats that day can have it cooked for $6.99 a pound, Mr. Lewis said. He’s also planning a new bar menu featuring tapas and other

items. “We want to cut the chef loose and tweak the menu,” he said. And the focus will be on food, staff and marketing, he added. Mr. Lewis said favorite dishes like seafood platters and clam chowder will remain on the menu. “We want to have a resort feel to the restaurant and provide that level of customer service you find at a resort,” he said. Inlet Harbor’s slogan is “the place to go with plenty to do,” and that’s a fact. Inlet Harbor is at 133 Inlet Harbor Road in Ponce Inlet. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
