me and take me away, like all the Disney movies depict. As I grew older, I looked at my parents who have been married for 30 years. There have been ups and downs in those years, sure, but I have watched each time they patched up holes to keep the love intact. There are also friends who stayed by me and watched me stumble over heartbreak and gave me their love to help me back up. Love is different for everyone, and we

ne of my favorite quotes, since I was young, has been, the classic “All you need is love,” as sung by the late John Lennon. In some shape or form, I think everyone should be loved. It is a defining force in nature. It can be as essential as air, food or water. There is no real definition of love. It is different for everyone. When I was younger, my definition of love was a knight in shining armor coming to save

experience it in different ways. This month, we celebrate love in all its different forms. For those who thinking of tying the knot, we have consulted a wedding photographer on the dos and don’ts of weddings in Brevard County, including the best places to take pictures and why photography is one of the areas of the wedding you shouldn’t skimp on. We’ve also talked to a couple who has been married 20 times to eachother, renewing their vows and their love with every step, and another couple, who showed us love has no age limit. February is the month of love, highlighted by Valentine’s Day. One of my favorite Valentine’s Days was spent with my mom. My father, an airline pilot, was

gone for the day and instead of us sitting at home, we booked a reservation for two at a hibachi-style grill and had an amazing night. We were able to have fun, even with the couples who surrounded us, and those who had the same idea as we did. The interactive setting of the hibachi made it easy for us to all feel like we were sharing the Valentine’s Day experience together. Celebrate the month, and use it as an excuse to shower a little love on yourself and others. We, at Forever Young, hope that your month is spent celebrating the love around you. As always, we welcome your comments and questions at ForeverYoung@hometownnewsol.co m.

Shannon Perez has been capturing memories through her lens for 13 years. She loves every minute of it. “I’m a creative type, and I always knew I would do something that would offer new opportunities and challenges every day that would keep me excited about what I do,” she said. “Photography has never felt like a job. I wake up each day excited about the people I’m going to meet, the new ways I can push myself and make beautiful images that make people happy.” Through her business, Simply In Love Photography, Mrs. Perez does it all – she captures fine art, boudoir and editorial photographs of families, individuals and all things beautiful. And, of course, she photographs many weddings on the Space Coast and beyond. “I am so blessed to have the privilege to be a part of the most important events in the lives of my couples,” she said. “I meet new people, see new places and constantly meet challenges that feed my creativity and keep me just as passionate today as I was when I started.” She said she approaches wedding photography knowing that the pictures will preserve memories for years to come. “With weddings, it’s an amazing feeling to know I’m creating imagery that will be viewed for generations,” Mrs. Perez said. “I always shoot weddings keeping in mind that one day the grandchildren and beyond will be looking at them and hearing the stories of this special day.” Mrs. Perez offered a few tips to those looking for the perfect photographer to capture the memories of a wedding: Q: When hiring a photographer for a wedding, what factors should be taken into consideration?

Shannon Perez A: These days, almost anyone could afford a semi-pro camera and a website. And unfortunately, overnight someone could become a “professional” photographer. So it’s important to do your homework. Your photos are all you’re going to end up with, so it should be top priority. It’s so important to meet the photographer in person, if you can, and chat a bit about your wedding plans and get an idea of the personality of your photographer. The way you feel is an important element of why you hire a wedding photographer, as you’ll be spending a lot of time with this person on your wedding day and more. Also, prepare and ask some important questions that would help you with your decision to choose the right person to document the most important day of your life. Ask questions like: What kind of training and experience do you have? What kind of equipment do you use, and do you have a backup camera? Do you have references of past brides and grooms? Also, ask to see the contract to be sure of the timeline that you’ll be getting your photos, how many you’ll be getting, and whether or not they will have a release. LOVE STORIES

February 2013

Couple shares vows, again and again

By Meagan McGone Staff Writer

Todd and Shirley Jaffe’s first wedding was an accident. The two had been dating for five months when they set sail on an elaborate cruise to Tahiti. Mrs. Jaffe’s weakness for wedding cake brought the couple to crash a party for honeymooners and anniversary-celebrators aboard the ship, where there was sure to be some sweet treats. “My wife loves wedding cake,” Dr. Jaffe, a Viera physician, said, as he recalled the story with a smile. “So we get to the party, and the ship’s captain said, ‘We’re going to bring everyone up by how long you’ve been married, and we’re going to wrap you in a Tahitian wedding blanket and renew your vows.’ We were laughing the whole time.” The Jaffes consider that accidental ceremony their first wedding. “The fun thing about it is that there’s a lightness to it,” Dr. Jaffe said. “There was no nervousness, no worry, no planning. It’s just something that happened, but it shows how much we did want to be married and to be together.” And since that first wedding on Feb. 5, 2003, they have been married a total of 20 times. A sharp contrast from the first, the Jaffes’ “second” wedding, a planned ceremony with more than 200 guests in attendance, was held in Orlando on Aug. 2 of that same year. “It was beautiful,” Mrs. Jaffe said. “It was nice and traditional. It was perfect.” But the marrying wasn’t over yet. The next year, Dr. Jaffe wanted to surprise Mrs. Jaffe with a vow renewal in Thailand, complete with Buddhist monks, traditional garments, a cart and donkey to carry the bride and members of the hotel staff to stand in as family members. Dr. Jaffe said that wedding was a unique experience, as he had to conquer obstacles to get to his bride that day.

Bottom left: Shirley and Todd Jaffe renew vows in San Francisco, with the Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance. Bottom right: Clouds form above Shirley and Todd Jaffe during a wedding ceremony in South Africa. “They took her away, and I had to go through three gates: a silver, gold and diamond gate,” he said. “At each gate, you had to bribe the elders. At the first gate, I gave them money. At the second gate, they made me sing and then, at the third gate, they made me dance. Then you get to the room that she’s being held in, and there are three ladies, who made sure I had all of the right answers, and they wouldn’t let me see my bride until I answered all of the questions.” Unique weddings aren’t uncommon for the Jaffes, who have now been married on all seven continents and on land, air and sea. They have said “I do” under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, in Central Park in New York

City, in South Africa, England, New Zealand, Argentina, and even in Antartica, surrounded by 200,000 penguins. Mrs. Jaffe said her favorite wedding was one in South Africa. “There were 50 children from the tribe dancing and singing to us, and we were out in the middle of nowhere, and we could hear the animals behind us. It was just really cool,” she said. Mr. Jaffe’s most treasured wedding was the one that they planned for in Orlando. “When I saw her coming down the aisle, I thought, ‘This is Princess Diana,’” he said. “She really was that beautiful. I didn’t even know that there was anybody else there. All I saw was her. It was just that intense of a

moment, and I just knew that it was meant to be.” Both Dr. Jaffe and Mrs. Jaffe had been married before, and both were in their 40s when they re-married. “We were mature,” Dr. Jaffe said. “And we really knew what errors we had made. We really loved each other and knew that we were not going to make those errors. No day goes by that we don’t tell each other that we love each other. No day goes by that we don’t tell each other, in some way, or show each other, how much we mean to each other. That’s what kills a marriage. Some people start taking each other for granted.” See LOVE, Page 8

neural system, enhancing arousal and pleasure, and they can stimulate the hormones needed for function and desire. One of these herbs is damiana. It has been used in the Mexican culture, as an aphrodisiac for both men and women for hundreds of years. For women, its constituents bind to progesterone receptors in the brain producing a “feel-good” effect, stimulating nerve sensitivity. This effect also eases moods and eases anxiety. For men and women, it has the ability to improve oxygen

flow to key areas of the body for increased pleasure. In South America and Peru, both men and women have used maca to stimulate desire and drive. This adaptogenic herb helps by reducing stress-balancing hormones and by increasing energy and stamina. Tongkat ali helps boost drive and function by increasing sensitivity to the erogenous zones in both genders. Tribulus terrestris is used in China, India and Russia to stimulate the production of testosterone in men and estrogen in women. When these are renewed, it can increase desire, stamina and virility. Ginsengs also provide a general rejuvenation effect by stimulating and normalizing blood flow throughout the body, enhancing nerve stimulation. Horney goat weed (yes that’s its real name), has been used in Eastern Asia

for more than 2,000 years. It was then and still is used now to boost desire and energy, increasing the libido of both men and women by enhancing sensations to the erogenous zones. For men, yohimbie has the ability to enhance blood flow during arousal, this can be helpful with erectile dysfunction, as well. The bark of this tree contains the Food and Drug Administration-approved alkaloid yohimbine, which before Viagra, was believed to support male sexual health. Just be careful because too much of this herb can cause anxiety, dizziness, insomnia and high blood pressure. With herbs, you have natural options to improve sexual health and satisfaction. Let’s face it, to get in “the mood” you need to feel desire, and when you are tired from the day, it’s hard to feel “in-themood.” According to studies done recently, some 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men suffer from sexual dysfunction. Fortunately, herbs have been used for thousands of years in all cultures around the world to spice up the bedroom. Good, healthy food with no fuss Marcia Potter, who owns Heavenly Treats with her husband, Alan, decorates a wedding cake. The bakery is an addition to Mr. Food No-Fuss Meals.

Business, bakery serves up delicious dishes, treats Busy moms and dads: Drop your spatulas and step away from the kitchen. A West Melbourne-based business knows you have better things to do than to spend all of your downtime near the stove. Leave the food prep up to Mr. Food No-Fuss Meals in West Melbourne. The business’ slogan, “Home cooking without the hassle,” explains it all. “I wish this was around for my kids when they were little because my husband and I worked, and I would spend my days off cooking to prepare meals for the kids,” said Marcia Potter, who co-owns the West Melbourne franchise with her husband, Alan. Mrs. Potter said that many busy Brevardians rely on Mr. Food No-Fuss Meals to feed their families. Customers can order meals for a month or simply retrieve food for one evening. The options abound. “For as little as $22, we will feed a family of four for two nights,” Mrs. Potter said. “We have quite a bit of moms as clients, who use us three days a week because of soccer, and engineers who don’t have time to spend on cooking.” Mr. Food No-Fuss Meals adds variety to its menu each month, aside from a few regular items that customers won’t let the business go without: Bruschetta Chicken Breasts, Chicken Burritos, Caesar Pork Chops and Chicken Patricia. Mrs. Potter’s favorite menu item is the Chicken Patricia, which consists of

boneless chicken breasts stuffed with goat cheese, basil and then topped with a roasted tomato-herb spread. “It’s my favorite dish,” Mrs. Potter said. “And our burritos are the best I’ve ever had.” Mrs. Potter opened Mr. Food NoFuss Meals more than four years ago, after her daughter introduced her to the concept in Boca Raton. “My daughter gained 30 pounds in two months,” she said. “In an effort to help her lose weight, somebody introduced her to to Mr. Food No Fuss Meals. When I saw her five weeks later, she looked great. I asked what she was doing, and she told me she was eating healthy. And when we tried the food, we couldn’t believe how good it was.” Ever since, Mr. Food No-Fuss Meals has operated in a health-conscious fashion. “We don’t use cans or boxes of anything,” Mrs. Potter said. “We boil our beans, we chop our ham, and we don’t buy pre-made stuff because it has too much salt.” As if the Potters aren’t busy enough feeding local families, they launched their own bakery two years ago, where they serve up custom cakes, cookies and a variety of baked goods.

Based out of the same location as Mr. Food No Fuss, Heavenly Treats grew from Mrs. Potter’s passion for baking. “I started baking at age 11,” she said. “For my birthday, I used to ask for sugar, flour and eggs.” Now, Heavenly Treats attracts more loyal customers with its zucchini bread, Dominican pound cake and empanadas, to name a few. “My mom, who is 73, is territorial about making the empanadas,” Mrs. Potter said. “We use a recipe from my grandmother, who just passed away at the age of 103. It used to be that making empanadas was a family event, and she left us with an amazing legacy: togetherness, God and those amazing empanadas.” Mr. Food No-Fuss and Heavenly Treats is located at 4270 Minton Road, Suite 108, in West Melbourne. Mr. Food No Fuss Meals delivers, and does not charge a delivery fee for those who are sick or unable to pick up meals. Place an order online at nofussmeals-melbourne.com. ROSE’S ROOM Valentine’s Day reminiscing F lowers, candy, jewelry. One wonders what old St. Valentine would think of his day in these times. While I certainly have no objection to receiving shiny baubles, (tennis bracelet from Zales Jewelers) I think, over the years, the best gifts have been free (or very cheap). Years ago, I was feeling less than romantic on Valentine’s Day since I was eight months pregnant with my fourth child. Backaches, exhaustion and swollen everything was exacerbated by three young children and a husband who worked two jobs. Money was tight, and hours spent helping little people pick just the perfect card for each friend and helping little fingers sign each card did little to help put me in a Hallmark mood. The holiday fell on a school day. As I raced to get everyone dressed and fed, with visions of someday when

the children are grown, romantic dinners intermingled with thoughts like “Is Kim wearing matching shoes? Did Darlene finish her homework? I hope Cindy’s teacher likes the card we spent so much time on. “ Finding a beautiful card and small box of candy from my best beau carefully placed in the morning cereal box brightened my day considerably, but the handmade coupon for one day of total child care gave me the vapors. I immediately began making plans for a long leisurely afternoon at the beach alone with a good book and

that box of candy. The big day arrived along with itchy spots and a fever on the 3year-old. By the following Sunday, all three children were scratching and whining. The third Sunday found my husband with a fever. The one after that I was in labor. I think you get the drift; the coupon became the impossible dream. I still have that unused coupon, but no need for child care. I wonder if it could be traded in on something more useful (a tennis bracelet from Zales Jewelers)? That day on the beach with a book is still a great idea, especially if the beach is in Bahia Honda. The early bird/senior special dinner can be romantic depending on the company. I may even be coerced into sharing a box of candy with my best beau.

The Jaffes said with each wedding ceremony, those first feelings of love and excitement are renewed. “To us, every vow renewal is a vow renewal. It’s a reaffirmation of the fact that I want to spend the rest of my life with her,” Dr. Jaffe said. “Part of it is that we both have wisdom from previous marriages – the things that make marriage work is the willingness to put the other person ahead of yourself. For us, and I know I speak for Shirley too, it doesn’t seem like it’s any effort. It’s just something we always want to do. The other person is that important to us.” “Think of the other person first: That’s the secret to success,” Mrs. Jaffe said, finishing Dr. Jaffe’s trail of thought. “When you can put the other person’s feelings and happiness ahead of your own, it comes back to you. And you are happy.”

True love knows no age By Meagan McGone Staff Writer

The wedding was the first for Mrs. Ramos, and the second for Mr. Ramos, who was married for 36 years prior to his late wife. In addition to a memorable ceremony, the Ramos’ wedding day consisted of an open bar featuring Mr. Ramos’ sangria recipe, photographs of the wedding party donning Santa hats, a sit-down dinner complete with an ice sculpture and a dance floor that was used way into the night. “People are still talking about how much fun they had, even two years later,” Mrs. Ramos said. “It was not the usual wedding day, but it was an event planned and appreciated by an older couple.” After learning a lot throughout the years, the couple said the key to

happiness in a marriage is working at it. “Be willing to communicate, always do a date night at least once a month, always kiss each other goodnight, always say hello and goodbye, never go to sleep angry and find things to do together,” Mrs. Ramos said. The couple resides in Indian Harbour Beach together, where they spend time together acting as chefs and creating masterpiece meals. “Most of the time, it comes out awesome, and we have to figure out what we did to write it on the recipe card,” Mrs. Ramos said. “Last time, it won me the best red chili award at work.” See STORIES, Page 10

Catherine Ramos, 50, first met her husband, Vincent, 70, while working at a wine store in Viera. “One afternoon, this kind, greatlooking, suave gentleman walked in and asked, with his deep voice, for my newfound favorite wine, Sixteen Hands Cabernet,” Mrs. Ramos said. “Of course, we had just sold out.” So, Mr. Ramos ordered a case, and he just so happened to pick it up – and more cases to come – on the days Mrs. Ramos was working. “I was immediately smitten,” Mr. Ramos said. “I loved her long hair.” After dating for four years, the couple was wed on Nov. 20, 2010, at a beautiful ceremony at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic.

Brevard beaches are so beautiful with the dunes, grasses, old lifeguard stands and boardwalks. I’m a beach girl, and I love natural images.
