hen you’re a child, you say to yourself, “When I grow up, I want to be…” and whether it’s an astronaut, firefighter or in my case, a journalist, those endeavors are usually set aside to make way for the real life. Well, what happens when you’re ‘grown up’ and those ambitions have been set so far on the backburner that you’re not quite sure you can reach them anymore? A few years ago, I was working in a retail store and had a manager I adored. She was smart and driven, but she always remained in retail, never got out of it. I had already earned a bachelor’s degree and was working in retail until I could find a career in my field. After some changes to management and other ups and downs, she

was faced with a career decision. When we were talking one day, I asked her what she wanted to do before she had a family. She replied, “I always wanted to do X-rays… like radiology.” That statement turned into ambition. Ambition turned into desire, which lead her back to college and applying for the radiology program at a local college. She only has one semester left before she graduates. I couldn’t be more proud of her. Soon after this, my mom decided she was bored. She signed up for a

program with the district attorney’s office to be a private investigator. She had a new passion, a new desire to help the justice system and learn new and exciting things. I’ve seen lots of different times where those people who have done something their whole lives turned around and said, “You know what? Let’s try something new, something different.” There is nothing wrong with deciding what you’ve done all your life is not the thing for you anymore. We all grow, whether it’s together, apart or up and in more aspects than just our desires and tastes. If you’ve always wanted to see if there was something beyond what you’re doing today, there are several places to go back to school. We live in an area that is full of

colleges and universities that cater to the younger and the “forever” young. In this issue, we talk to people, who changed their minds later in life, giving them a new outlook. We talked to the different schools in the area about programs and beating down the “But I’m too old to go back to school” thoughts. You’re not. You’re never too old or young to learn something new. It all starts with a little ambition. We here at Forever Young, hope that you enjoy this issue, but more so, that it may inspire you to learn something new or to take those first steps toward returning to college. As always, we welcome your questions and comments at ForeverYoung@HometownNewsOL.com.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Sometimes it takes a job to make one figure out what they want to do in life. After working with the regional planning council in 2005, Stephanie Heidt, said she finally knew what she wanted to do when she grew up. She was 40 at the time. “I knew I still had the best years of my professional career before me,” she said. “I felt I needed to supplement the experience that I had with a formal education.” Ms. Heidt applied at Indian River State College, earning her associates degree in public administration, but she didn’t stop there. “I wanted to continue on to get my bachelor’s degree but it was not offered at the college at the time,” she said. “I looked at other schools but working full time made it impossible for me to go elsewhere.” As part of Indian River State College’s commitment to help their students, the Bachelor of Science degree program started in the fall semester of 2012. Ms. Heidt signed up right away. “Dr. John Donahue has been tremendous in putting together a very informative program that really prepares you to work in the field of public administration,” she said. “The things I experience every day in my job are what we learn every night in class.” Being a student at Indian River State College has been an ‘awesome’ experience, Ms. Heidt said. She’s still attending classes at Indian River State College and looks to graduate in the next few semesters. For her, the classes have been a good size, being able to easily interact with other students and the professors and make new

The classes not only provide the academic knowledge that we need, but are also very informative because we’re able to share our

thoughts, beliefs and life experiences, which are very diverse.” Ms. Heidt hopes that by sharing her experiences with college can motivate and encourage others to try college or return to it, just as she was encouraged by her husband and her mother in law. “I would strongly encourage any-

KEISER University places graduates first By Brittany Llorente PORT ST. LUCIE — From one central point, each and every student follows a path to success. At Keiser University, their record of 94 percent of graduates being placed in their field of degree is more than impressive. It makes Keiser University one of the top schools in the country for those seeking a new career or direction in life. J e a n Claude Norman, Dean of Academics at Keiser Universities’ Port St. Lucie campus, has seen his share of graduates in his 17 years at the campus. He attributes the schools flexibility and career driven classes and programs to its success among students of all ages and walks in life. “The fall of the economy is a direct correlation to people wanting to go back to school to be retrained,” Mr. Norman said. “They’re going back to school for stability.” The university offers degrees in nursing and allied health, associate of science, associate of science in culinary arts and video game design, bachelor’s degrees in accounting, legal studies and criminal justice, master’s degree programs and many more. Keiser University makes it easy to enroll, contacting financial services to see if it is affordable for each student. After attending school and earning a degree, the student services aid in job placement by helping to

build resumes and working with the companies that the university is affiliated with. Currently, the university has partnerships and affiliations with the Martin and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s departments, school boards and various hospitals in both counties including Martin Health Systems and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. Classes are available online and on campus, both day and evening schedules. “We have many delivery methods for learning,” Mr. Norman said. “We have an outside of the box method to working with students.” He says that the teachers at Keiser University are well versed in working with students of any age and one of the unique aspects of the university. The age range of the student population is 17 to 61 years old, with their average age at 31 years old. If you’re curious about Keiser University or their programs, there will be a Summer Fest open house Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a Scare Fair on Oct. 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be an open forum for all programs Aug. 13 at 3:15 p.m. and Sept. 12 at 3:15 p.m. Keiser University is located at 10330 South U.S. 1, Port St. Lucie. State college helps students blossom By Brittany Llorente ForeverYoung@hometownnewsol.com

TREASURE COAST — For more than 50 years, Indian River State College has helped students earn associates, bachelors and technical degrees. With classes and campuses from Vero Beach to Stuart and availability from in class to online, the college has great flexibility. When going back to school or starting for the first time, Michelle Abaldo, director of institutional advancement for Indian River State College, says that class sizes and program selections make the school an optimal choice. “We have small classes,” Ms. Albaldo said. “The student to teacher ratio is 24 to 1, so students are not lost in the crowd and professors make teaching, not research, their top priority. This makes for a comfortable environment

for students of all ages.” The college offers more than programs for degree seeking students and quick job training programs which offer preparation for a job in a year or less. Convenience is another factor. “There is an Indian River State College campus within 20 minutes of everyone on the Treasure Coast,” she said, “Including hundreds of online courses, this is especially helpful for those who live and work in the area.” The number of students over the age of 40 has grown in the last couple

of years. Currently, there are 4,838 students over the age of 40 enrolled at Indian River State College, the oldest student being 89 years old. “Job opportunities are changing and it’s necessary for [people] to update skills,” Ms. Albaldo said. “Indian River State College uses an applied approach, which means learning is linked to the realworld. Students participate in onthe-job internships, clinicals in hospitals, student teaching and other experiences that provide opportunities to apply what they’re learning. Many people over 40 appreciate this aspect.”

Catch the eye of over 25,000 readers!

The college was recently named the fourth most affordable college in the U.S. by the U.S. Department of Education. “We combine quality and affordability,” she said. “The college is ranked in the top 10 of the best public regional colleges in the south by U.S. News and World Report.” The college also offers a wealth of assistance for those who have graduated or are soon to earn their degrees. “IRSC operates an active career and transition center,” Ms. Albaldo said. “Students get assistance in developing their resume with interviewing skills.” For more information on admissions, contact the main campus at (772) 462-7460 or visit www.irsc.edu.

The historic botanical gardens started as a result of the botanist Dr. Henry Nehrling, who had a vision in the early 1900s of how to preserve and protect plant life. It has been an ongoing project through the years to make it what it is today. The Naples Museum of Art is a reflection of the unique spirit and generosity of southwest Florida. The visual arts center includes a three-story, 30,000-square-foot museum with 15 galleries. The museum is dedicated to displaying world-class paintings, sculpture, drawings and other art forms, while providing educational programs and lectures. The last Wednesday of each month, the museum offers “Art After Hours” from 6-9 p.m., with free admission. Downtown Naples offers everything from coffee shops to waterfront dining and everything in between. There is also a large selection of shopping centers, plazas and boutiques, ranging from Third Street South, Fifth Avenue Shops, Tin City and Venetian Village to Waterside Shops and the Coastland Center Mall. Walking and water tours are available to fully experience this area. Marco Island has no shortage of beaches, and if you choose to visit for the weekend, there are many hotel options right on the water. For public beaches, you can visit any of the three main access points, Tigertail Beach, South Beach or Resident's Beach. See TRAVEL, Page 10

s a former New Yorker, when I hear the words “West Coast,” I immediately think of California. Now that I am a Floridian, I have come to learn that there is another “west coast” and that would be the west coast of Florida. Set on the Gulf of Mexico, the west coast is a beautiful area to visit for a day or more when the East Coast. Sanibel Island, Naples and Marco Island are my picks for this month, with much to see and do. All of the areas have beautiful beaches, parks, museums, shopping and dining. Take a step back in time at the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village. Seven historic buildings have been moved from their original locations to tell the story of the early pioneer families, who settled on the island in the 1800s. Take advantage of the map offered to take the walking or biking tour that has been set up. The Botanical Gardens at Sanibel Moorings Resort is overflowing with many native, tropical and unusual flora and fauna and offers a two-hour walking tour every Wednesday at 9 a.m. A reservation must be made, and the cost is $5 per person. Old Town Sanibel encircles the east end of the island, near the Sanibel Lighthouse. It's a place to stroll through the quaint village shops, inns and restaurants. The Bailey Matthews Shell Museum offers everything from free walks, where you will learn to find and identify shells, to a museum filled with anything and everything you have ever wanted to know about shells. The Naples Zoo and Caribbean Gardens are two attractions in one. Lions, tigers and bears are all here along with giraffes, hyenas,

FORT PIERCE — You don’t have to travel across the ocean to step into a tropical oasis or sail the seven seas in order to come face to face with a pirate. Sand, sun, wenches and whiskey are all within reach at one of Fort Pierce’s newest hot spots; Captain Jax Sandbar and Grill. I visited the sandbar on a warm, breezy Saturday afternoon. The décor made me feel as if I stepped out of my car and onto a deserted island full of treasures. The motif includes pirates, parrots, tiki huts, treasure chests and a friendly wait staff who all look the part. The spacious outside seating area includes a sound stage that plays host nightly entertainment. As my dining companion and I were seated at a large tiki table, we noticed the sound of reggae music

quietly subtly filling the air. “We really want everyone to enjoy the atmosphere,” said Samantha Reed, our waitress for the afternoon. “It’s a laidback, friendly atmosphere. People stop by on their bikes after a ride, after spending their day at the beach or in the evening time for some live music and cold beer. It’s a great environment.” The relaxing environment made was only the beginning of our adventure into the land of pirates. As soon as lunch was served, we knew this place had the something special that turns a hot spot into a popular place for sunny afternoons and breezy evenings. Our waitress brought out an appetizer of coconut shrimp, fried crispy with a spicy raspberry dipping sauce that accentuated the tasty treats perfectly. The large

shrimp also came with an orange mandarin dipping sauce. Either sauce was a terrific compliment to the appetizer. Our lunches were served quickly and looked amazing. The Mahi margarita tacos were served with beans and rice and a lime tartar sauce which brought out the flavor of the fish. Topping included cheese, salsa, jalapenos and lettuce. My dining companion chose the buccaneer beef sandwich with fries. The Chicago style meat was incredibly tender and was served on ciabatta garlic bread. The sandwich was served with a side of au jus which complemented the flavorful meat. I definitely recommend trying the sandwich that way. Other show-stopping menu See DINING, Page 10

wanted to find. The problem was that we did not know their married names, and therefore had no way to find them. I came up with the bright idea to research the aunt’s family that was not related to Susan. She had also thought of that, but did not go far enough. Looking in the Social Security Death Index, I found that her cousin’s grandfather had died in a town the family had never lived in, to our knowledge. Why was he there? I found his tombstone in the county the SSI had listed. How do I find the names of the two daughters who probably he left behind? I needed the obituary. A Google search for the county obituaries lead me to the county library. I discovered that the library had an index of the obituaries in that county and See GENEALOGY, Page 10

on, possibly, for years. When you finally break down that dead-end wall, the answer has usually been sitting there all this time, but you just didn’t see the way around the wall to get to it. Taking a breather from genealogy is not a bad thing. The interest never dies, and when an event of some type triggers it, you will be more excited and productive as ever. Remember my motto: “Someone, somewhere has the answer; it is your job to find it”. My friends and I have been taking a new tactic to get results. We trade our problems with one other and

work on someone else’s dead-end. This proves to be just as exciting as finding a new surname in our own family, but not as personal. Actually, we begin to feel related to each other because “your people are my people” at that point. I recently had a good friend call me, desperate for help. She was looking for a long-lost cousin she had never known. We did not know if her cousin was still alive or what kind of health she was in. Susan gave me all the facts she had, and all the necessary research had been done until she had reached that brick wall. She was thoroughly stuck. I started at the beginning and did my research on the family, and was very impressed that she had done all her research thoroughly until she came to the last two women she

veryone doing genealogical research for long periods of time on the same families will eventually become bored. It really helps to take a break, and come back to your research when you have another surge of interest. It may be days, weeks or months and you will probably lose your train of thought, but getting away will also give you a much-needed break and clear your mind. Starting back fresh will provide a new perspective about how to go about finding a different way around your old problems. You decide to research the in-laws that are not your ancestors, or all the aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers and cousins. Often, finding everything about these people will often provide valuable clues to the direct ancestor that you have been stuck
